A MESSAGE FROM

your lieutenant governor

Hello Division 20! Teamwork makes the dream work, and at the same time, it is equally important for club members, officers, district officers, and the international board to be able to communicate, understand, and truly work cohesively to make our goals as an international organization possible. In an effort for you to understand who our international board is and what they do, here’s a special edition newsletter introducing them! We’re excited to announce our International Trustee, Shinbee Park, from the Capital District (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C)! Shinbee will also be representing our sister districts, Kentucky-Tennessee and Alabama. She’s responsible for communicating with each of her districts, so be on the lookout for an introduction letter from Shinbee soon. The New Jersey District is also incredibly proud to be the home of our new International President, Devin Sun. Having served a term as an international trustee, we know that he’ll do an excellent job as the International President. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or just want to have a colloquial conversation, I’m only a phone call, text, Facebook message, or e-mail away. Yours in caring and service, Vanessa Ting DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | SPECIAL EDITION: MEET YOUR BOARD

A Q&A with our International President

DEVIN SUN

What are three fun facts about you? 1. I like to longboard. 2. I love to dance, but I’m terrible at it. 3. If I could eat pasta for the rest of my life, I would. What is one word you would use to describe your Key Club experience? Some go into Key Club knowing exactly where they want to end up. That was not me. There is no exact moment that everything clicked; instead, it was more so a development that occurred over a period of time. My experience as an International Trustee gave me the rare opportunity to work with Key Club from a different perspective, not necessarily higher, but definitely different. As I served three amazingly unique districts and the greater entity of Key Club International, I saw untapped potential. My inspiration to run for International President ultimately was a manifestation of my desire to give back to the organization that had already given me so much. What is your favorite Key Club memory? Without a doubt, my favorite moment in Key Club was International Convention DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | SPECIAL EDITION: MEET YOUR BOARD

2014 in Anaheim, California. Of course, every convention is special, but ICON 2014 was a turning point in both my Key Club career and life. I was a shy and reserved individual when I entered high school. Looking back, I returned from Anaheim a different person. If I had to put it into words, I would say that I found home away from home. I owe everything to that one week in July that altered my life for the better. How was your experience campaigning for International President? My experience was different. Going into my campaign, I tried to tell myself it was just that, a campaign. I tried to rationalize that concept by looking into my previous Key Club campaigns: lieutenant governor, district editor, and international trustee. In reality, campaigning for International President was an experience like no other. Once I realized that I was running for the highest office of the world’s oldest and largest student-led service organization, it was intimidating. But if I was to do what I thought was best for our organization, I was not going to let fear stop me. What is one piece of advice you would give to Key Club members? Key Club is what you make it, so make it amazing. You can make Key Club just a line on your college application. You can choose not to attend any Key Club meetings or service projects. But at the same time, you can make new lifelong friends. You can step out of your comfort zone. You can gain a new experience. You can find your home away from home. The great thing about Key Club is that it is what you want it to be; it is all a matter of perspective. If you want it to be something that you forget about once you graduate high school, so be it. But if you want Key Club to become the highlight of your high school career, you can definitely make it so. High school is only four years out of our long lives. Although it seems like an eternity now, it will seem like mere seconds in the future. Just remember: time flies, but you are the pilot. What are you most excited about for your term? I’m excited to learn with my fellow board members. There is a common belief that the people in leadership positions know everything. That is nowhere near the truth. Leaders are just normal people like you or me. Although leaders may have some more experience, they are learning just the same. Through learning, I better both myself and Key Club International as a whole. DOCUMENTING DIVISION 20 | SPECIAL EDITION: MEET YOUR BOARD

SHINBEE PARK

What are three fun facts about you? 1. I love matcha! I drink green tea about every single day. 2. I participate in FIRST Robotics Competition and hope to become a mechanical engineer one day! 3. I love photography and editing/creating pictures and graphic designs on photoshop! What is one word you would use to describe your Key Club experience? One word to describe my Key Club experience is growth. Ever since my journey as a club president began, I noticed an increase of participation from members. There was an aura of friendliness and enjoyment that sparked among the members in my club. They had the desire to not to just grow as a club, but grow as individuals. I also hoped to grow as a leader and friend. Seeing the growth in the clubs I served, I as a Lieutenant Governor was also another inspiration. It allowed me to view Key Club as a place where I can be comfortable and express myself and my opinions freely. This truly helped me grow into the person I am today. What is one piece of advice you would give to Key Club members? Don't take the people you meet in Key Club for granted. All the friends, adults, acquaintances you encounter will impact you, whether you notice it or not. Most of the time the impacts are indirect so you may not understand it at first, but as you place yourself in the bigger picture in the Key Club community you start to evaluate how blessed you are for your club, advisors, and friends. What are you most excited about for your term? I'm most excited about meeting each district board I was assigned to. All three districts come from a different backgrounds and cultures, and I can't wait to experience Key Club from three distinct perspective as well as observe the districts' similarities. I also am excited to see our each district will grow from the beginning of their term to the end.
