EDIT ORIAL
Dear Vangardists, Welcome to our Street Issue. The street is a public habitat and meeting ground for everyone and everything. It’s not just something that takes us from A to B, but can also be a workspace, a living space or a bedroom. It can also be where we do sports or party, be a runway, or be a combat zone for politics and democratic actions. The street belongs to everyone, and it looks it. Therefore, the VANGARDIST decided to venture into the street's darkest corners and gutters to take a close look at public acts of copulation. Whoever's interested in partaking in this phenomenon – known as “cruising” in most parts of the world – can definitely find themselves confronted with some bizarre surprises. Another surprising trend is called sapiosexuality, which declares intelligent people sexy. If you feel unprepared for this, get some horn-rimmed glasses with bottle cap lenses from your local thrift store. Yes, we love nerds! Then we move on to our exciting photo editorial on street style in New York, and in our Places section, we take a look at the hip Highline Park. Few other artists have portrayed street youth culture as unsparingly and honestly as Larry Clark. His photo books and films like Kids or Ken Park are truly shocking, but at the same time they’re considered milestones of photo and film art. We’re also celebrating the premiere of the film HOMOPHOBIA by Gregor Schmidinger, maker of the YouTube hit Boy next Door. And our readers will get to see it one day before its release, exclusively in this magazine. ER Wishing you progressive entertainment with this month’s issue, PREMI

Meeting point: Staircase 9
TEXT: HENDRIK H. ILLUSTRATIONS: TAMARA PICHLER
While the majority of career-driven, neo-bourgeois couples are routinely spooning and dozing in front of the telly between East Enders and the evening news, dirty adventure is awaiting me on motorway rest stops, parks, and in campus bathrooms. I’m Hendrik, and I’m a cruising virgin.
16
As someone who can definitely appreciate male beauty but tends to opt for women whenever sex is an issue, I’m actually crossing new sexual frontiers here. Because there's one thing I’ve had to realize very quickly: It is nearly impossible to find offers on the internet – or anywhere at all for that matter – of spontaneous non-committal heterosexual sex to be had somewhere out in the open, or even in the relative safety of a public car park. The reason for this probably being that any woman would have to feel a more-than-reckless lust for adventure to announce her wish for sex along with her current whereabouts openly on the internet, as this would most likely result in a tsunami of horny and desperate gentlemen between the ages of 19 and 99 offering their services to her. Another reason could be that, even after 70 years of active capitalism, the cultural phenomenon of the heterosexual “casual fuck” is still struggling to become acceptable. After a whole postwar generation tried their hardest, with the help of ashrams, Aldous Huxley, the
pill and female empowerment to separate sexuality from patriarchal family power structures, the concept of free love in today’s society has now been mostly replaced by narrow-minded bourgeois thinking promoting monogamy. And even though for most people it seems to be completely acceptable to excessively consume porn, the hetero libido is still mostly enjoyed in a rather conservative manner. After this realization, I decided to turn to the kind of non-commercial, non-committal public sex which, thanks to its lack of patriarchally-imposed constraints, bears the promise of fulfilling all my needs: gay cruising.
No need for meeting points Since the internet has made set meeting points for gay cruisers obsolete, the sky's your limit when it comes to thinking up creative new places for a sex date. After receiving some advice from a good friend, I created a GayRomeo account plus accounts with some other gay dating sites – of which during the process my heart was racing like crazy – then sat down for the next couple of hours studying the fascinating ads. They seemed to put within my reach all those promises I had formerly only seen in porn films and never thought could be real.
18
Waiting at staircase 9
Fancy a wank in the basement? Right now? The number of ads suggesting “a wank in my basement, now!” only makes me think guiltily of my poor bike, which, bought three years ago and thus not anywhere close to full age, had to spend the whole winter down there on its own. And even though I’ve always suspected that the amazing erotic impact you feel inside a McFit changing room can’t just be a coincidence, I’m still slightly shocked by the suggested meetup time: 4.30 a.m.! The libertarian daredevil in me then decides that this paper pushing is getting embarrassing and so, with trembling fingers, I note down the time and date of the one suggested sex date that I actually feel up to: Today, 5 p.m., staircase 9 on the university campus. I also add a few more adventurous offers like a construction-site gangbang and the “wandering glory hole” to my list, but decide to save them for later. They seem a bit much to start out with.
I get there early, so have time to check out the premises, but can’t identify a suitable hiding place for a bit of sucking off or wilder stuff. Did that guy literally mean the staircase? WTF? Kind of… brave. A bit stumped and indecisive, I find a spot from where I can safely survey the scene but can’t be immediately spotted myself, and start to wait. From time to time, someone walks past. One guy acts like he’s sounding out the situation but then disappears again. At half past five I’m just about to leave, feeling half disappointed half relieved, when I see a man walking towards me. He looks at me and slows his pace. “Hotlips1980?” he asks. It takes me about
20
a second to understand. I’d expected a young student-type, but this guy is in his late thirties! I smile and pretend I don’t know what he’s on about. Even though he looks quite nice, for the life of me I can’t imagine any homoerotic contact with him. He’s already walked past me when I suddenly have a slightly unsportsmanlike but, investigatively, very clever idea. And it works out – jackpot!
Michael’s secret Fifteen minutes later, we’re sitting inside a café. Angel666, aka Michael, is 41, married with kids, and a consultant. He already discovered his bisexual orientation in his early teens but had never actually acted it out. Very frankly, he tells me that after the birth of his second daughter he started to develop strong desires for extramarital sex. Because he didn’t want to risk his marriage, he first tried his luck with prostitutes, but that kind of went against his beliefs. And after he’d experienced the same disappointing
results as I had when seeking hetero sex dates, he finally ended up on GayRomeo, and at some point, at staircase 9 on campus. The anonymous and non-committal fellatio he could now experience on a regular basis calmed his libido and spared his wife the unpleasantness that generally accompanies the obligatory affair with the secretary.
The man on the parking deck It has become evening; the garage is dark and cold, and the atmosphere very creepy. I wouldn’t have even come here on my own if this journal-

istic masterpiece hadn't promised to win me the Pulitzer Prize. Obviously, there is no one to be seen at level 0. We try to catch the attention of whoever might be there by making loud throat-clearing noises, but nothing happens. I keep a bit of distance while Michael goes about carrying out the pre-arranged task. The situation is so utterly bizarre that I can’t help but giggle a little. “I can’t do this when you’re there watching me and laughing,” says Michael. I understand. So as not to jeopardise the whole thing, I offer to wait for him outside. We agree that, should anyone actually show up, Michael should ask him whether it’s okay for someone to watch, and then send me a text. Slightly perturbed but impressed by Michael’s dedication, I skive off to the level above. I listen intently, but can’t hear anything. I’m just about to sneak back down when my phone vibrates. “One or no one, sorry. Guess you still got what you were looking for. Happy Easter you chicken Michael." Back on level 0, I can’t see anyone. Grateful for an experience not had, I decide to call it quits. I’ll never
know whether the date with the wandering glory hole actually did happen in the end. It would definitely be a shame if I had ruined things with my investigative spirit. And after all, Michael is an impressive living example of the sub-culture that I had set out to explore. I’ve still got one more date lined up at 11.30 p.m. at the rest area on the A2 right outside of town. We’ll see.

Most of us pass through our adolescence without recognizing the mark that it’s made on us as adults. Larry Clark has, for over 50 years, been capturing this moment in life and breaking it wide open for the world to see… and hopefully, digest.
42
GROWING UP WILD As a young teenager, a camera was shoved in Larry Clark’s hands so that he could help with the family portrait business – baby portraits. He learned the basics and eventually kept the camera close by as he grew into his adolescence. It wasn’t long before he was capturing the wild times of the 1950s when rock ‘n roll was rampant and drugs were lifting their victims into other dimensions. In his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Clark was in the centre of suburban America, capturing the hidden lives of him and his friends doing drugs, having sex and being young. After a couple of years at art school, Clark moved to New York to start out on his own. Two months later, he was drafted to the Vietnam War. When he returned, he embedded himself in the underground culture of his hometown, capturing the extreme drug use, sex and violence so prevalent, yet never publicly known.
FROM OBSERVER TO ENGAGER He delved into the culture and, unlike photographic projects of the past, captured a society from within rather than from the observer’s perspective. The images were shocking and wholly beautiful, capturing the essence of the significant

societal changes in a time when everyone was rebelling from the “perfect” view of the post-World War II era. Was America the land of the free and happy? Was everyone living the “American Dream”? Hell no. The American Dream was turned on its head and smashed with a boulder. The result was its brains – on drugs. In 1971, after completing his work, Clark produced a book with the help of his friend Ralph Gibson and Gibson’s newly launched Lustrum Press. The book, entitled Tulsa, shocked the world; photography and movies would never be the same. From then on, it was all or nothing and creatives from the likes of Nan
Goldin, Martin Scorsese, and Gus Van Sant were influenced by Clark’s new revolution. But it wasn’t just about taking photos of drugs, sex and violence. It was about relating to the subject. This position is what made Clark famous throughout all of his artistic projects. After Tulsa, Clark was definitely not done. He was determined to find what made us who we are. In 1983, he published his second book, Teenage Lust, a sort of autobiography that took a look at his experiences with all of the culture that twisted our perspectives of the underground. It went beyond Tulsa, even capturing male street hustlers in New York City – photos that have been marked as some of the most profound images of his career.

FAST FOR W A R D >> REVOLUTIONIZING FILM More than ten years later, Clark’s first film was produced, delving into the lives of teenagers in New York who were emerging into their sexuality and forging their identity. Kids, much like his photography of the ‘60s, shook up the film world in 1995. The film was produced solely with teenage actors, all of the main actors over 18 but playing younger characters, who explored, beyond his common images of drugs, sex, and violence, themes of murder, abuse, suicide, loitering, masturbation, incest, and AIDS. Many scenes from Kids have stuck themselves in our

heads, leaving an imprint and defining much of the characters' nascent maturity and extreme naivety, mixed with a confidence in the unknown. The combination can be both embarrassing, as shown in a group of pre-teen boys smoking marijuana (1), and disastrous, as shown in a group of mid-teens beating someone unconscious with their skateboards (2). The most tantalizing of scenes from Kids are nothing in comparison to his
following films that include, amongst others, Bully (2001) and Ken Park (2002), which was banned in Australia and never released in the US (due to non-licensed music). In 2010, a retrospective of Clark’s works was presented in the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville in Paris and included many images from his Tulsa collection that hadn’t been seen before. It received wide critical acclaim and solidified his place as one of the most significant

e The imperfect paradis
Whenever people think of Miami, what first pops in their minds is eternal sunshine and never-ending beaches plus all the amenities a big city has to offer. Next to New York City and Los Angeles, it is probably one of the most talked about and well-known cities in the United States. Though I must say that Miami seems to be a little over-glamorized, which means that you have to accept it as an imperfect paradise. If you come for the right reasons, which are tanning, eating, and clubbing, this city will blow your mind.
64
In fact, I have to say that the only part of Miami that you really want to be at is South Beach. The whole essence of Miami is South Beach. This small area is the place where everything is happening. Pitch your tent here and I assure you, you will have a great time.
Should I be here? So what can you expect of Miami (South Beach)? As I already mentioned, being here for the right reasons is the most essential thing. If you want to experience a conventional city trip with sightseeing, cultural happenings, mu-

seums, etc., then I would suggest you don’t come here. In Miami, culture is a side program, just like the French fries that come with burgers. Fries can be enjoyed, but the main reason why you ordered the burger was THE burger. The same thing is true for Miami. The reason why you are here is not the museums, but the clubs; it is not the sights, but the beach; and it is not to enhance your cultural knowledge, but to get a tan. Miami is not superficial; it is just pure, exhausting fun! But before we dig right in, let’s at the more intellectual side of things.
As a side course
became a symbol of decadence and extravagance many more art deco buildings have seen the light of day. The Park Central Hotel and the Imperial are especially beautiful examples and a good starting point from which to check out the Art Deco district. Walking around here is really amazing and gives you a feeling of nostalgia. And if you get bored, just roll out your towel on the nearby beach.
Miami is famous for its Art Deco district and its design scene. Once you get there, the term “Art Deco” will be omnipresent. For those of you who do not know what it is exactly, here’s a little art history class: Art deco is an ultra-modern looking style of architecture that was to some extent influenced by ancient Egyptian tombs. Basically, it is all about stark lines, bold colors, and zig-zag. So at the time this style was en vogue, the whole ocean- When it comes to museums, Miami offront of Miami Beach was under con- fers a very limited amount of choices. struction, and ever since South Beach But there are two that I think really

stand out. The first one is not located in South Beach. So if you have a car, go for it, but if you don’t, maybe you should put it up for discussion amongst your travel companions because it has to be said that leaving the island is generally a rather difficult task. If you depend on public transport, the only way to get off the island is by bus. From my experience, I can tell you that their bus system is very fuc… unreliable. I’ve spent so much time waiting for buses that I now have a pretty good tan. And that’s not the worst part; once you are on the bus, it takes forever to cross one of the bridges. So either rent a car or stay close to your hotel.
Vizcaya Museum
But back to the museums: The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a beautiful European-style palace full of European antiques, artwork and decorations from the 16th to the 19th century. You’ll have a gorgeous view of the bay and can stroll through the lavish gardens. It is also a very popular spot to get married in case you and your significant other are looking for a rather extraordinary location, but you can also just crash a wedding and get free drinks and food. The other museum that I would recommend is the World Erotic Art Museum that luckily, and not surprisingly,
is located in South Beach. Admission is rather expensive and you cannot bring children because of all the penises, but I guarantee you’ll have a good time. Their collection is extensive and they have some pretty interesting pieces, especially the contemporary ones. Although I have to say that it is not well curated, offering little explanation and information. But nevertheless, erotic art is just the perfect fit for Miami. Another great sight is the Fruit and Spice Park located in Homestead, which is a neighborhood very close
to Downtown Miami. On a side note, do yourself a favor and stay away from the Downtown area. I know there is a Macy’s, but it is anything but pretty (some might even call it dirty). Locals won’t set foot in there so you should just trust them and follow their example. Back to the park: It is a 30-acre park exhibiting a huge variety of fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts, herbs etc. It is really nice for picnics and a great place to relax before the next party. Speaking of which, we’ll deal with that part in a second, but first let’s discuss the beach-situation a little bit.
70
South Beach
Roll out your towel Now that we have dealt with the cultural options, let’s move on to the one thing that will never let you down in South Beach: the beach (unless you are into secluded types of beaches a la the Maldives, in which case you should probably refund your ticket). If you are into people watching, clean sand, warm water, endless coastlines, handsome hunks and gorgeous girls then you’ve found your paradise. In general, the entire beach is very well-maintained, but there are certain parts that should be emphasized.
The best dunes, where you will eventually end up spreading out your towel, can be found at Lummus Beach, which stretches from 6th Street to 14th Street, right around Lummus Park – hence the name…duh! Locals call this stretch “Glitter Beach”, which is pretty much all you need to know. The lifeguards could be extras on Baywatch. Lots of abs all around you. The crowds are very diverse, from frat boys and sorority girls to businessmen and tourists, so your eyes won’t be disappointed. However, especially pretty girls travelling alone or
in a group should be aware that Miami is basically a nest for players and idiots dressed in hideous Ed Hardy getups. They can be very obnoxious and throw pick up lines left and right. Just take it as a compliment, but I guess pretty girls already know how to deal with this breed of men.
very laid-back and relaxed. You’ll find bands playing everywhere and you can always get food and drinks from the nearby Ocean Drive. Some bars give out their drinks in plastic cups so you can actually take your Mojito or Caipirinha back to your towel (FYI, in the USA it is forbidden to drink alcohol in pubAnother perk is that women can go lic). topless here, which is something extraordinary for an American beach. So Other pretty beach sights are the lifeit is safe to say that the atmosphere is guard towers at beaches close to the

the men/women ratio is not applicable when it comes to gay clubs. Here, it’s back to the first rule: The better you look, the easier you’ll get in. Admission to most South Beach clubs is around 20 dollars, which seems to be the island standard. For some special nights with special DJs you might have to pay more. Drinks are around 10 dollars. The restaurants at Ocean Drive always have happy hours, which means you can get buckets of margaritas for only a few bucks. So it is the perfect
place to pre-game. One thing which is always helpful is to check with your hotel: some of them offer special VIP access to the better clubs and will put you on the guest list. But even if your hotel doesn’t offer this service, check with the staff or the concierge. It is always good to have locals on your side! Affordable hotels that offer this kind of service are: Hotel Chelsea, The Kent, and the Greenview. In terms of clubs, my friends and I rec-

Insider Update I’ve recently spoken to one of my good friends who actually lived in Miami for quite some time, and she offered some good insider tips that you should definitely consider. The first one is a bar called The Townhouse, which is actually a hotel, but with a rooftop with an amazing view of the whole city. Instead of sofas, they have red waterbeds for

ommend the Cameo, Mansion, LIV and Nikki Beach. They’re the prototypical South Beach venues with strict bouncers, beautiful people and endless house music. The island in general is pretty open-minded, so no matter what your sexual preferences might be, you’ll feel welcome in all of the clubs I’ve just mentioned. Of course Miami is known for its LGBT community, which explains the high amount of beautiful people and the loose atmosphere. So if you want to go strictly gay, you should check out Twist (always free entrance ) and Buck 15. I’ve heard that these clubs fulfil every

their guests to lounge in. So lie back, chill out and keep the cocktails coming. The Room is also a bar but smaller and more down to earth. They have a great selection of beer and are more quiet and relaxed than the excessive party that is going on elsewhere. She also mentioned that Midtown Miami is very hot these days. Midtown is a recently built neighborhood on the mainland right next to one of the bridges (I actually used to live there when it was still a construction site). Now there are plenty of new bars, shops and restaurants. She highly recommends Gigi,
a noodle bar and restaurant that offers American and Asian-style brunch, lunch and dinner. Leaving the island for Midtown is indeed a safe endeavour because it is really enjoyable. So if you are in Miami bitch (just a little LMFAO reference), make sure that your base is South Beach. Also be aware that it can be quite a superficial and obnoxious city, but with the right attitude and the right group of people it will offer tons of un! Gregor Schmidinger’s short film “Homophobia” points to self-acceptance as a source of strength.

OUTER COLD, INNER HEAT It’s a moonlit night on the Austrian-Hungarian border sometime during the 1990s. It’s the dead of winter and pale faces are visible amongst the shadowy trees. Camouflage, guns. Silence, cold. Hours. And underneath: emotions. The on-screen setting for Gregor Schmidinger’s short film “Homophobia” contrasts the hypermasculine world of military service with the emotional life of an adolescent boy named Michael, who has fallen in love with one of his comrades. A third recruit, who acts as a bully, is struggling with his inner world. “In this über-masculine, cold setting with snow covering the ground, the internal world of the characters plays out in a very intense way,” says Schmidinger, 26. “Only towards the end do we experience a smile, a bit of warmth, a kind of thaw.” More than a film about bullying, “Homophobia” is about the importance of taking the first step toward self-acceptance in a seemingly hostile envi-
ronment – about coming out confidently to one’s self. “In that sense, it could actually be called ‘auto-homophobia’,” Schmidinger says. “It’s about dealing with the a fear we have of ourselves. Quite a few films have been made about homosexuality, coming out and bullying, but I wanted to make a film that stresses the importance of accepting one’s feelings and shows how this self-acceptance can make you strong.” The military setting heightens the pressure on the characters who are still trying to figure

With nothing to do but guard the Austrian border for hours in the cold, they have a lot of time to think. And when you add emotions to the mix, the tension mounts. Off-screen, a film crew is braving the cold, an electric generator truck is fuelling the lights and the young director is motivating his actors to deliver intense performances. With support from the local mayor, “Homophobia” was shot in the woods outside Schmidinger’s hometown, as well as in a former tobacco factory in Linz which had been converted into a space for art projects.
Although the film is set in the 1990s, so that it pre-dates the opening of the border and neatly eliminates the presence of cell phones, Schmidinger tapped into some of the most modern avenues in filmmaking to realize the project. A TRULY WIRED PROJECT In addition to the director’s passion, the internet was a major force in the making of “Homophobia”. The project presents a catalogue of ways in which young directors can use the web to advance their projects – from online crowd funding to keyword searches. Bolstered by the success of his previous short film “The Boy Next Door” (2008), which garnered a significant number of views on YouTube, Schmidinger set up a website under the header “Project Homophobia” to generate crowd funding. The target was to raise 6,000 dollars in nine weeks, and he promised to donate any proceeds to the “It Gets Better Project” if the amount fell short. By the end of the allotted time period, he had a total of 10,000 dollars.
One of the next steps was to issue a casting call, which also initially took place online. Actors sent in motivational videos explaining why they wanted to be part of the project. “It was important to me that the actors have a strong connection, as this is such a deeply emotional topic,” says Schmidinger. “But of course the final casting had to take place in person.” With the funds raised, it was also possible for Schmidinger to work with director of photography Nino Leitner and gaffer Alex Püringer. Leitner has been among the first in Austria to use the Canon EOS C300, billed as revolutionary in independent

FUR
filmmaking. The camera works well in low light, combines the advantages of a camcorder and DSLR camera and enables extreme contrasts – perfect for the exterior night shots required in “Homophobia”. DIALOGUE WITH THE FUTURE AUDIENCE Taking the crowd funding concept one step further, Schmidinger invited those who donated to become a dynamic part of the project. They were invited to join a Facebook forum, where they could offer online feedback on the film’s progress. According to Schmidinger, this step was not that easy:
“It was a bit scary at first. You worry about giving up your artistic integrity. But sometimes you can be too limited to your own perspective. The online discussions gave me an opportunity to engage in a dialogue with my future audience and draw on their respective talents. In the end, it was a positive experience.” KEY WORD: “HOMOPHOBIA” Even the title of the film is informed by the web. Criticized by some as too generic, Schmidinger defends it by pointing out that it provides a way of reaching a broader audience with a single word: search engine optimization meets art. He also notes that the title is written in two distinct fonts, highlighting the film-specific interpretation of the term. “Homophobia” will premiere in Vienna in May, 2012. After that, it will be shown on the internet and at film festivals. Although the subject is gay-focused, Schmidinger sees his film reaching beyond a culturally or community-specific audience. “Even in a niche film like this, which

RE IE M E R P L IL W ” IA B O “HOMOPH 12 0 2 , Y A M IN A N N IE V IN addresses a specific community, I try to open the subject matter up to a universal perspective,” he says. “In this case, it’s self-acceptance as the best way to approach life, rather than attempting to meet someone else’s expectations.” Schmidinger sees himself going on to write about and direct any number of topics: “I believe you can make films about complex or challenging topics that nonetheless reach a broader audience, and I do try to keep the audience in mind.” FILM CLASSES AT 3 A.M. Although Europe is gen-
erally considered the home of artistic ‘auteur’ films compared to business-dominated Hollywood, Schmidinger’s personal trajectory has been the opposite: after studying the technical aspects of television and film production in Europe, he went on to develop his artistic screenwriting skills in the United States. Currently, he is enrolled in a screenwriting course at UCLA, which, due to time zone differences, requires that he get up at 3 a.m. for weekly Skype classes. “But I don’t mind so much,” he says. “Once I get my first coffee in me, I find that it’s a great time to focus without the usual distractions you have during the day.” Perhaps this is why his studio is called the “Irrational Realm”? In any case, Schmidinger seems to be adept at harmonizing the irrational artistic with the pragmatic, state-of-the-art side of filmmaking – a formula for success, in any age.

CELEBRATION
TEXT: DAMIEN HUNTER PHOTOS: LIFE BALL
On May 19th, the Rathaus (City Hall) in Vienna will open its doors again for Europe’s biggest charity event against HIV and AIDS. This year, the event will celebrate its 20th anniversary, which will be held under the spirited motto: “Fight the Flames of Ignorance”, and glamour, haute couture and a lot of bare skin will, as always, be used to raise awareness and money for a good cause.
106
It all started in Paris at a time when AIDS was claiming more and more victims in the fashion and art scenes. The rudimentary medication that was available in the first years of its appearance often fought only the symptoms of the incurable auto-immune deficiency and AIDS very often led to a quick death. The first charity events took place and soon after, make-up artist Gery Keszler, who was very well connected in the world of fashion along with his close friend Torgom Petrosian, himself suffering from AIDS, had the visionary idea of organizing an AIDS Life Ball in Vienna. The ball,
which was initially meant to be a oneoff event, took place for the first time at the Rathaus in Vienna in 1993 and is best described with two words: mad and libertine. This hadn’t really been the plan. After all, the event had been permitted by Mayor Helmut Zilk and sponsored by the city. Petrosian died of AIDS the following year, but shortly before his death, Keszler made him a promise that would have far-reaching consequences: to carry on their visionary project. The Life Ball was born, an outsider event that pulled in an impressive 79,940 euros in donations in just its very first year.
In the beginning, Keszler managed to run the organisation with only two teammates, first from his gallery in the Grünangergasse in Vienna, then moving to a small room of about 100 square feet at the Intercontinental Hotel. The triumvirate set out to make the world a better place; they weren’t paid for it, but they survived on strong idealism alone – and not just them, but everyone who was involved in the project. Even Heidi Klum & Co. showed up purely for the good cause and never saw a penny for it. In 1994 donations had already doubled, and since then the Life Ball has continued to be a massive event with top-notch guests. The number of visitors is constantly increasing, in sync with the amount of money it raises. The motto is “provocative and spectacular” and the Life Ball still lives up to it, beating the drum loudly and in spectacular fashion for its cause. SIMPLY NERVE-WRACKING The year when the Rathaus was being refurbished, when the Life Ball then
108
had to move into the imperial Hofburg Palace, was when things got really massive. That year, they had six designers, an estimated 400 models and a fashion show which lasted one and a half hours. Last year’s show unfortunately fell through due to force majeure. Designers were very disappointed. Who could blame them? It’s not exactly cheap to put on a show like that. Roberto Lhoka also speaks of a “force majeure” when he talks about that year and adds that the weather has never been “just nice”. Generally though, only the dress rehearsals get rained on – the only exceptions so far having been the Roberto Cavalli and Gianfranco Ferre shows. Cavalli, however, was completely unfazed by the constant spatter (well, we all know that his designs are for eternity) and was only reported as saying: “Everyone outside. Basta!” CELEBRITY MAGNET Some celebs come to party; others just wish to be an active part of the whole event. Bill Clinton, who founded the “Clinton Health Access Initiative”, loves the Life Ball and always plans one year ahead to fit his busy timeta-
110
ble around the event to make sure he can attend. A portion of the 19 million euros raised last year went to Clinton’s organization. The “Elton John AIDS Foundation” has also benefited from the event since 2005. Up until that point, Elton had only been a regular guest at the ball and presented the opening speech. Another organisation that supported Keszler with quite a bit of money in 2011 – half a million to be precise – was amfAR, the “American Foundation for AIDS Research”. But Keszler doesn’t only direct money where it’s needed, he also brings a bit of Hollywood to Vienna. Over the years, the likes of Kim Cattrall, Eva Longoria, Sharon Stone and many more have lent glamour to the event. And of course it’s the stars that ensure the public’s, and more importantly, the media’s atten-
tion, raise awareness and open peoples’ eyes to the issue. But the glamour also poses a certain threat. The media tends to “forget” to talk about AIDS and HIV and instead focuses on the designer gowns on display and the “who is dating who?” guessing game. Of course Keszler finds this difficult. For him, it’s a constant challenge to maintain a balance between the party hype and struggle for celebrity attention and keeping the focus on his main interest, which is the Life Ball’s serious agenda. Keszler himself has received criticism in the past and has even been denounced as a “business faggot” and been reproached
Elton John Bill Clinton and Fran Drescher

112
for constantly flaunting his sexual orientation. Yet he also receives support. The renowned Standard newspaper, for example, once wrote that the Life Ball could never be the subject of criticism because one of its main traits was “to be simply wonderful”. LIBERATING MASQUERADE In 2007, the Life Ball was themed “Once Upon a Time”. The motivation behind the escapist motto was to allow people to disguise themselves for one night, wear a different face and battle evil and death; a quest for the happy end, so to speak. In 2008, the theme of the night was “Landing on the Planet Life Ball”, by which organisers wanted to point the way towards more tolerance for different life concepts. 2009 saw the beginning of the “Circle of Life” mottos. The idea behind this was to dedicate the following four Life Balls to the four elements of water, earth, air and fire. Their themes, chosen accordingly, were: “Let Love Flow”, “Sow the Seeds of Solidarity”, “Spread the Wings of Tolerance”, and “Fight the Flames of Ignorance”. In its official
114
declaration, the Life Ball organisation also used the four elements as symbols and stated: “Where the flames of ignorance rage, they always leave behind a trail of destruction. Ignorance, social marginalisation and discrimination, which people who suffer from the fatal condition AIDS are still today often subjected to, have the very same effect. But even burnt earth can still bring forth life.” Gery Keszler is the soul of the Life Ball. Anyone who puts such an amazing amount of energy into a cause and manages to mobilise so many forces of good has probably made it their main purpose in life. Keszler says about his life project: “I wouldn’t want all the glory and spectacle created by the celebrity guests to take the focus away from the original mission of the Life Ball. Our message is: Give help and hope to others, show solidarity, be tolerant but don’t tolerate exclusion and celebrate life. And above everything, our message is to use condoms because they’re still the only real protection against HIV and AIDS.”
When the Life Ball started many years ago, it was an outsider event. Today, it has around 4,000 guests and brings in approximately two million euros in donations. Organising it is a logistical tour de force, but it has become one of the highlights in Vienna’s calendar of events and is amongst the biggest charity events in the world. We are looking forward to a lavish and glittering party where everyone celebrates life and dances prejudices into the ground.

In a world of beauty and perfection sexuality is the order of the day, but does intelligence fit the equation? Some have decided physical appearance is overrated; they are aroused by intellectual wit and interesting conversation. Are you one of them?
TEXT: CAROLINA MONTEJO ILLUSTRATIONS: MAGDALENA WEYRER
The fantasy of the physical Dare to fall comfortably into this illusion: You are at a coffee shop on a Saturday afternoon, the warm temperature embraces every corner of your body, you’re reading a new book and the story unravels a series of interesting characters. You turn your head and arm in the direction of the sugar, and as you grab it a ravishing pair of eyes meet your gaze. The beautiful eyes are just a starting point to blushed lips, messy, dirty blonde hair, caramel skin and yes: the right kind of jeans hiding the right kind of butt. A short electrical feeling pierces your body through and through. You go back to your book and find the words scrambled and pointing back to the “sugar”, you look again and a sweet smile gives you the cue for a hello – after all, you’re not so bad yourself. A conversation starts, and the hypnosis you felt starts to fade like you’ve just discovered gravity: he’s hot on the outside but his comments are short on wit, and thirty minutes later you’d much rather go back to the characters in your novel.
126
As you’re walking home you start remembering Mr. Anderson, that intellectual, sexy-in-a-nerdy-way college professor who you used to talk with before class; conversations that got your mind going and left you wanting a lot more than just his knowledge. So, what attracts you? What turns you on? You decide on abstract thought, clever humour and insight. You’re a sapiosexual. Etymology and contemporary use The word sapiosexual is a fairly new term in the cultural dictionary: a neologism that is gaining ground, predominantly online, to describe a sexual orientation toward the mind as well as the body, but stimulated purely by intelligence. The word’s etymology stems from the Proto-Indo-European sapio – to try, to research – and from the same Latin root sapiens – capable of discerning – as well as from the much more frequently-used suffix sexual, from the Latin sexualis, or referring to sex. Being a new term, many variations are yet to be established. Some people who use the word make reference to arousal regardless of gender: the only thing that counts in the sexual equation is your brain. Others however, use the concept as a subcategory: you are gay, straight or bi, but you are prone to feel naughtier if some philosophy, politics or critique is at the core of your foreplay.
Reinventing the wheel? The concept may be new, but let’s not reinvent the wheel. Many generations will admit to a good amount of both secret and public crushes based purely on intelligence – I know I have. I suppose that after many years of wondering about it, someone got around to doing the research and gave it a name, one that a lot of people seemed to be expecting. But what lies behind this preference? Why aren’t looks enough for sapiosexuals? I have a theory: I was translating a philosophical text about inspiration based on Plato and, as my mind was stimulated by the content, I connected sapiosexuality with inspiration, as if they were meant to be together. Intelligent thought makes your brain move, wonder, and at least try to give the term Homo sapiens a better shot at being a
128
true statement, and when this happens a taste of inspiration hits you: your brain is shaken and the flow of new ideas gives you a rush. For people who value intelligence this rush creates a sexual reaction, because they are aroused on an entirely rational level and they can find beauty – and pleasure – in places beyond physical appearance. The philosophy of attraction Now, I know that the subject here is sexual arousal, but since I´ve already mentioned Plato and he is so relevant to the subject of Eros – and was probably sapiosexual himself – I think it´s worth stepping briefly into the realm of
philosophy. The word Eros comes from ancient Greek and was used to describe intimate love, and Plato thought that Eros was synonymous with philosophy, which literarily means a love or desire for wisdom. He also stated in his famous Symposium dialogue that Eros can contribute to an understanding of truth – so yet again there is a connection between erotica and the importance of the mind. Maybe not for everyone, but definitely for those who think that intelligence is a higher value. Still feeling sapiosexual? Carl Jung, father of analytical psychology, described Eros as the counterpart of Logos – the principle of rationality – and much like Plato, believed that Eros was ultimately a longing for wholeness. With that in mind, let’s go back to the coffee shop fantasy from the beginning, the conversation and the beau-
tiful eyes. The person reading the book, in this case you, is not mentally stimulated by beauty because there is no balance between Eros and Logos: the fairness and the physical have reeled in your interest, but the interaction does not complete the equation. You don´t feel like the other person’s thoughts could bring out a wiser side of you; your mind wants to get horny at the same time as your body, but in the end your mind is frustrated because it’s sending out vibes and information that are just being blown into the air. Notes from a modern brain But this is what men from the past thought, and even though the historical angle is important, it´s equally relevant to ask for a more contemporary opinion. I went to friend and psychologist Alejandro Spicker – who’s both attractive and smart – and asked him what he thought of sapiosexuality. I found… mystery. Alejandro thinks one of the reasons why people can be attracted to intelligence is because the other person´s conversation or thought processes become a mystery
130
worth trying to unveil, and that becomes interesting and awakens sexual desire. He also stated that it could be arousing because it builds a scenario of submission/domination that works for a lot of people. The truth is, as always, subjective, and one opinion or four can end up leading the way to yet more interpretation. In the case of sapiosexuality, what Alejandro and I see as possibilities, and what can be interpreted from Jung and Plato are all valid standpoints because it is such a new and colloquial concept. Is it genderless and closer to pansexuality? Is it present within gender? I think it can be both, and from the little information that can be found about it, I think it is exciting that we all get to support it with different ideas. After all, intelligence and reason are what make us unique as a human race.

Island of your dreams The ultimate party: XLSIOR – Mykonos Dance Festival 22nd – 26th August 2012 TEXT: JULIAN WIEHL FOTOS: MARTIN DARLING
As soon as we’ve enjoyed the first few warmer days of the year, we can’t help but start to dream of the ultimate beach party: chilled sounds, refreshing, fruity cocktails and relaxed people who smell deliciously of Hawaiian Tropic and dive after Frisbees with their beautifully shining bodies. Somewhere people are having a barbecue and, judging by their laughter, are enjoying it. We can’t wait for the night when the whole island will be on its feet celebrating the night away. So if this is what your dreams look like, then you’ll be amazed to hear that they can come true! At the Mykonos Dance festival, a top international event now in its fourth year. You won’t find this perfect combination of a relaxing beach holiday, culinary highlights and party-'till-you-can’t-party-no-more at any other festival in the world, believe you me.
The parties for this mega-event are organized by international party labels like WE and INFINITA from Madrid, MATINEE from Amsterdam and BEYOND from London. Locations fill up, but their size is generally quite easy to survey and the atmosphere is that of a pretty intimate festival. So don’t worry, it’s easy to enjoy yourself in the crowd, away from all the big city madness.
Last year, VANGARDIST editor and photographer Martin Darling visited the XLSIOR 2011 with Lauda Air. In his daily blog you can find all his best tips, tricks and advice for the festival week in texts and pictures.
