CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Events listed for recent times have mostly gone ahead though support for some of these has not been great. The Annual Rally, organised by Katryna Shaw ably supported by Colin Hey and Katryna’s family, whilst down a little in numbers, went ahead with all participants enjoying the weekend’s activities. Reports elsewhere cover other activities. Coming events are the P-Group Annual Rally, the Malvern Run for Anzac Day and the Autumn Three-day Run. The time is fast approaching for those prepared to take an active part in the management of the Branch to put their

names forward. Nomination forms for all Officer and ROSS BUTLER Committee positions Chairman is in this Hub or ph 03 352 3160 available from the Secretary, Rod Thrower. It would be great to have the position of Club Captain filled. With the guidance and support of Dave Inwood, a previous Club Captain, this position is not too onerous and is largely a matter of coordinating our various motoring events. Regards Ross

SECRETARY’S REPORT Special thanks to John Coomber, Graham Read, John Forster for bringing their cars to the Avon Life care Retirement Home to display last month. I would still like to extend my list of members I can contact for these visits. Some are for just static display and some to give a ride around the village. Only required for an hour or two and gives a lot of pleasure to the residents of these retirement villages. The more members I can call on, the less it will fall on just a few. I would also like somebody with the enthusiasm to volunteer to co-ordinate these visits for the branch. This is only required approx. five or six times a year, like Father’s Day etc. Snippets from National Executive Meeting held on 20th March 2021 in Wellington. The subject of converting NZ vehicle fleet to electric was discussed and the possible restrictions to your hobby. There was to be member of NZTA attend the meeting to give a talk but they cancelled the night before. The subject of restrictions on vehicle imports was discussed and it was pointed out it doesn’t appear to affect our type of vehicle. Vehicles over 40 years will be exempt and vehicles 30 to 40 years old can be imported under other exemptions that will exist. Note for members attending Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring. Entry forms will be out very soon and a reminder that all entrants VIC certificates must be current at time of the rally. A small number of entry forms will be PAGE 6

sent to branch secretaries. A link will be available on the website to ROD THROWER allow you to print Secretary ph 03 338 2320 your own. This will save thousands in printing and mailing costs. Entries preferred to be online if possible as this will also save time having to enter them into a database. There will be suitable events for Veteran cars. Topic of Face book popularity was discussed, and suggestion made for rally organizers to use it for promoting your events. “VCC Facebook page” There will be a lot more promotion forthcoming to advertise Daffodil Day Rally for Cancer. Discussion on National Branding, more to come on this in near future. Notice of Motion: Online membership approved to go ahead and be voted on at AGM. 2021 MARKS 75 YEARS OF MOTORING FOR VCCNZ

Join the celebrations 2021 VCC National AGM will be commemorating 75 years of the Vintage Car Club of NZ hosted, in Christchurch, by the Canterbury Branch on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 August. We are inviting members to come to Christchurch for the AGM. It would be great to see members in club eligible cars. The weekend's celebrations will start on Friday 10.30am with a short car club type tour to an interesting lunch stop and return to the AGM venue by 3pm. Saturday morning is the AGM with morning tea. The afternoon will see a leisurely 1-2 hour walking tour from the central city venue or a guided bus tour around the central city. Either of these options are dependant on numbers. Afternoon tea would be included, then returning to the venue in time to prepare for the Evening celebratory dinner.

ANNUAL RALLY Words and photos Colin Hey

Although the numbers registered for the Annual Rally were down slightly this year with 57 vehicles registered, the enthusiasm definitely was not. A happy bunch of rallyists assembled at Cutler Park on Saturday morning 27 February in anticipation of a (mostly) relaxing two days of motoring and socialising, all organised under the watchful eye of Katryna Shaw and her many helpers. Cars began rolling in the gates at Cutler Park even before 9.00am, and with a great weather forecast for both days of the rally it seemed we were all in for a good weekend. Tea and coffee and biscuits were served on the front porch of the clubrooms whilst rally packs were being handed out, and at 10.00am Katryna addressed the crowd with a welcome and a brief outline of what we could expect. PAGE 10

Three rally routes had been organised, all finishing at the Southbridge Domain. The short route was via an almost direct route on quieter roads, the medium went via West Melton, Halswell and then Lincoln, whilst the long route traversed the Summit Road from Cashmere to Gebbies Pass, before skirting the Ellesmere area and finishing in Southbridge. Most completed the run in one to two hours, their time at the start and finish being recorded to allow calculation of the average speed – one element to be used in the final result tally. Unfortunately a call received just before the final cars were leaving Cutler Park brought some bad news. There was an accident just along the road from Steam Scene. At that stage it was not known if it involved any of our members, but at least one of our

rally entrants’ had stopped to assist, so it needed to be checked. It was found that Tony and Ngarie Becker had been involved in a rather nasty crash outside of the gun club less than 1km from Cutler Park. Tony was driving their Peugeot 309, which once crashed looked like a crumpled-up Toyota Corolla, so nobody realised it was them. Luckily only about 30% of the cars went that way anyway. Fortunately the Peugeot had crumpled exactly as it was designed to do in a collision. Even though it had no air-bags Tony was not hurt and was out and walking around, however Ngarie suffered some seat-belt injuries. The Peugeot was a total write-off – not a great way to start the Annual Rally.

enjoying their picnic lunch, with the added bonus of a spirited cricket match going on in the domain to watch. By now the sun was shining and it was really pleasant sitting around chatting and strolling around the other cars. At about 2.00pm we were on the move again, this time to call in on John McLaughlin’s large shed in Leeston. On display were a varied collection of veteran and vintage cars and bikes, military and farm vehicles and equipment, and even one of the first genuine Hamilton jet-boats. It was a very interesting collection to look at, and John even gave us a good run-down on the history of the vehicles, many of which have been in his family for decades.

After rendering what assistance we could, we finally arrived at the domain in Southbridge amongst the last of those who took the longest route, finding everyone

From Leeston we were free to head home with Saturday’s events effectively ended for the day, but the promise of more to come tomorrow and a good weather forecast still gave us plenty to look forward to. PAGE 11

John McLaughlin telling us about his collection

On arrival at Cutler Park on Sunday morning, we found Katryna and her helpers busy getting set up for the day. The equipment for the field tests was already organised (the Parts Shed team were looking after this), and the barn was open and being set up for our entertainers and our lunch. The picnic tables and chairs were also being set up outside. As cars arrived they were directed over to the area behind the clubrooms and put through their paces. Many struggled on the see-saw, but Model T Fords aced it with their distinct left-pedal simplicity. The ever-decreasing circle also caught a few out – in fact Katryna returned from her ride in Graeme Sword’s car feeling decidedly dizzy! As the score-sheets were completed they were taken to the Barn where results were being compiled, aggregating the scores from the time-trial and concours the day before with the field-tests.

enjoyed. By now the weather was sunny and warm, and everyone happily relaxed and settled in until the time came for prizegiving around 1.30pm.

By 11.00am our musicians Anthony Pickard and his father Neil were up and running, playing a variety of popular music which kept everyone entertained well into the afternoon. Our BBQ lunch was cooked up by Wayne Stocks, and then served up on the tables inside with a variety of salads and breads – a delightful lunch which everyone

This year all of the Annual Rally trophies that could be awarded were handed out, the notable exceptions being a couple of the veteran and motorcycle classes that we had no entries for. Katryna thanked all of the helpers who had played some part in the event (and there were many), but most of all thanked all of the participants who had once again contributed towards the overall success of the rally. At the moment we feel there are still a number who are Covidweary who may not have come, but the good number who did take part ensured the future still looks bright for this annual event, and the current format was certainly enjoyed by all who took part. 2021 Annual Rally Awards:

Old Cars, Bikes & Coffee

A reasonable turnout on Sunday 21 March – certainly another really nice-weather day made it very pleasant. Unfortunately our Coffee Cart owner forgot to book the date in her diary, and she has passed on her sincere apologies to all of those who missed out on their ‘proper-coffee fix’ for the morning. Luckily a backup of instant coffee and tea was soon wheeled out from the clubrooms, and although it was free, it didn’t seem to offer quite the same kick (well, according to Kevin Clarkson anyway!).

Malcolm McGibbon is going to bring his 1912 Model T Ford Raceabout along to allow anyone who has never driven a Model T Ford before (or anyone who wants to reacquaint themselves with one) the chance to have a go in the safety of the club grounds. Having had a go myself for the first time during the Annual Rally, I can say this is an opportunity not to miss. Normal coffee service will be resumed next month (they promise!), so do come along and bring any interesting bike, car or other vehicle out for a chat and some mutual appreciation of other people’s vehicles. Starts at 9.00am, free to leave when you like, and all over by 11.30 or so. PAGE 17

VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP March 2021 Run I’ve just been back in history and I see March 2020 New Zealand went into a Covid lockdown and the VOG’s were unable to get out on the roads. Not a lot has changed in that 12 months but at least we’re not in lockdown this year so thankfully the VOG’s were able to get out and about for another blast of excitement on our wee motorized velocipedes. What a magic day Tuesday 9 March was. A huge team of 15 riders arrived at VOG 1’s base in Halswell ready for a day of thrills and excitement out on the roads around Halswell, Prebbleton, Lincoln & Tai Tapu. First off was a visit to a local collection of motorbikes, cars, chainsaws, exquisite china and gemstones all well worth a look at. The “sheds” these were displayed in would blow you away, everything is as neat as ninepence, even the workshop area hardly has a tool out of place and yes

ROYCE VOG 1

John (the owner) does spend a lot of time out there working on his projects, he has enough there to keep him busy for a few years yet. A quick jaunt out to Lincoln led us to our lunch break at the Famous Grouse establishment with great food and even better conversation. The return trip back to base took us via Tai Tapu. I had told the lads before we left that when they hit the Old Tai Tapu Rd they could open up the throttle and not worry about following the “leader” as it was a straight forward run. Well most of them took this to heart and despite there being a stiff head wind they really “rung” the beasts out and I believe even hit the earth shattering speed of 35km/h. It was great to be out on these roads during the week as there was very little traffic or lycra-clad cyclists hogging your little piece of the road. Only a couple of breakdowns this month – nothing too disastrous and with the brain power available within the group the bikes will be back on the road again ready for our April run.

Scrap Metal Drive A big thanks to all who cleared their garages, sheds, workshops and sections of unwanted scrap metal and brought it out to Cutler Park on 13th March. A couple of members even had to make two trips! By the end of the day the huge bin dropped off by Trillo Metals was completely full, and another pile of larger objects was put to one side for them to collect as well. A small half-size skip left for aluminium scrap was partly filled, and a drum full of electric motors and about 40 car batteries were collected too. At the time of writing we are waiting for the funds raised to be advised, but hopefully it will be a good return that will add a little to our finances in this otherwise-compromised fund-raising year. I would like to thank all of those who contributed scrap to the cause, and I’d especially like to thank our Chairman Ross Butler for his support and assistance for the whole of the day. Colin Hey

VETERAN REPORT I’m afraid I haven’t a lot to report this month, and I have to confess that we’ve only had the Wolseley to one event this month. This was the Avonhead Rotary Twin Rivers car show at the A&P Showgrounds on 14 March where I joined the display put on by the Wolseley Car Club. This was a huge event this year, with around 600 vehicles taking part. I couldn’t help but think that next year we should put on a special promotional VCC display there, given that probably around 70% of the vehicles there were VCC eligible, many of which did not belong to VCC members. The same day, Mike Milne ran the Rear Wheel Brake Rally, and no doubt this will be reported on in this month’s Hub as well. I know he had a great run planned and I’m sorry I could not be there to help support it. Hopefully it wasn’t spoiled by the strong easterly wind prevailing on the day. On 20th March at the Methven A&P Show a 1905(?) Single-cylinder De Dion was auctioned off. Apparently it was an early restoration undertaken by the late Brian Black. Although in running order, it seemingly hadn’t seen much use since Brian sold it many years ago and needed some TLC and brassware to return it to it’s best, but hopefully it has stayed local and will be enjoyed by its new owner. Coming Veteran Events: Sunday 25th April VCC Canterbury Anzac Day Malvern Run. Supported by Dutton Garage, this is a run open to all VCC vehicles, but designed to be particularly suitable to Veteran vehicles, PAGE 20

with flat running on quiet, sealed roads. All the details were in last month’s Hub – starts in Darfield, visits the five cenotaphs in the immediate Malvern area, finishing with lunch in Glentunnel. Trailers and support vehicles can be left in Darfield. Several veterans from other branches are already booked to attend, so please get your entry in now and join in this run to celebrate and remember those who fought and fell for the freedom we enjoy today. The link for the entry form is here. Also, don’t forget the Veteran Car Clubs’ Creepy Crawly Run on Sunday 18th April – start venue is 499 Avonhead Road, 9.30am for a 10am start.

9-90’s REPORT March Run John Winchester took care of us on this day. We met at the Rolleston Community Centre where we were given clear instructions, and a rally direction’s sheet, (where to go and where to turn). 50 cars participated and up until the first destination everything went as planned. We stopped at the South Rakaia Huts Settlement, a place a lot of people, including me, didn’t know existed. If you haven’t been there go and have a look round. You’ll be impressed. I believe about 4 or 5 cars got stuck in the shingle but with a bit of manpower they managed to get going again. Then 50 cars carried on to the next stop and, believe it or not, 14 of us, including yours truly, got lost. I wish that I hadn’t got lost as I believe that it was a vegetable packing house at Lovett’s Family Farm which would have been interesting to see. But thanks to John’s experience and wisdom he had told us where the 3rd and final end point of the rally was at Trott’s Garden in Ashburton. (another place well

PAGE 22

worth a visit) and there we had our lunch in lovely surroundings. The weather was kind to us, we had a great raffle, good banter and a lot of new faces. A good day was had by all and we got home in time to watch the America’s Cup racing. Thanks, John, for a great day from us all. 7 April Arthur Bodger is the organiser. Meet in the New Brighton Club Carpark off Marine Parade at 9.55am. 12 May Tony Becker Meet at the Vintage Car Club grounds on McLean’s Island at 9.55am. The team is looking forward to seeing you all in April. FUTURE EVENTS Please check your emails or the club website for any cancellation of our future trips.

5–7 March – Jim Toohey Rally. Nine bikes left Cutler Park to travel the 60 miles to Methven, but we actually travelled 170 miles to get there. Lunch was at Lake Hood. Plod set the route using Google Maps; very obvious as he sent us down a road that was deep gravel, all 11 miles of it… The ski lodge accommodation (with breakfast thrown in) was very good!! Thanks to the organisers.

10 March – Motorcycle Noggin. At Motorcycle Corner, about a dozen arrived.

12–18 March – National Motorcycle Rally, Masterton. This was cancelled due to covid-19. As many of Canterbury branch’s The Syndicate had time off work etc., an alternative tour of the South Island was undertaken instead. About 15 riders and a truck & trailer for back-up went Chch – Blenheim – Nelson – Punakaiki – Fox Glacier – Wanaka – Twizel – Chch. In all, a 10 day trip including a couple of lay days; no real dramas either.

PAGE 24

CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section 27 March – Fish & Chip Run. This is in the future at the time of writing; however is to be a trip to the Winchester Swap Meet. Be interesting to see the numbers fronting up for the 8.00 am meeting at BP Rolleston… FUTURE EVENTS

11 April – “P” Group Annual Rally. No reason why motorbikes in the Post Vintage, Post war, Post 60 and Post 80 cannot join in! See elsewhere for details and entry! (I’ll be there, driving my Stag though…)

14 April – Motorcycle Noggin. This will be a visit to the VCC National

Archives housed in the VCC of NZ’s HQ at 12 Aberdeen Street, between Manchester and Madras Sts, central city. 7.30 pm, and Don Muller, VCC Archivist, will be on hand to show you around. There is some very interesting old things there!! Probably retire to a local watering hole afterwards…

17 April – Scooter Run. Also for motorcycles up to 250cc. All Veteran bikes, regardless of size, are invited to attend as well. See elsewhere for full details, but start is at First European Motorcycles Café, Fitzgerald/Ferry Rd corner, gather 10.00 am. John Benn (022 078 2002) is organising.

24 April – Fish & Chip Run. The proposed garage raid has been delayed, so just front up to BP Moorhouse/ Antigua corner, 10.15am for a 10.30 am departure. Riders decide on destination.

12 May – Motorcycle Noggin. We are furiously thinking of an interesting place to visit, so if you have any bright ideas let’s know!!

23 May – Ruff Run. It is on the calendar but nothing formalised at a committee meeting yet. Watch this space!

Annual Scooter & Small Motorcycle Run Saturday April 17 2021 All scooters, small motorcycles (up to 250cc) & veteran motorcycles welcome. Gather at 10:00am

First European Motorcycles Café (Corner Fitzgerald Ave/Ferry Rd) Leave at 10:30am Dust your bikes down and fuel up for a full, fun day out.

REAR WHEEL BRAKE RALLY Words and photos Mike Milne

At Halswell Domain 17 cars meet for the start of the rally on a sunny autumn day. The drivers’ briefing was short, and the rally rules were explained, only turn left. This was the law for the day, in history there have been some interesting laws made. In the United Kingdom, there was a policy requiring self-propelled vehicles to be led by a pedestrian waving a red flag or carrying a lantern to warn bystanders of the vehicle›s approach. In particular The Locomotive Act 1865, also known as Red Flag Act. In the United States, the state of Vermont passed a similar Red Flag Law in 1894, only to repeal it two years later. The law required all motorists piloting their “horseless carriages”, upon chance encounters with cattle or livestock to: 1 immediately stop the vehicle, 2 “immediately and as rapidly as possible ... disassemble the automobile”, and 3 conceal the various components out of sight, behind nearby bushes» until equestrian or livestock is sufficiently pacified. … and we think we live in crazy times!

PAGE 26

Cars left the domain, turning left with the route taking cars through Halswell, Lincoln onto Waterholes Road crossing over the new overbridge before heading towards West Melton and finally ending up at Cutler Park for lunch. There was a great spread of vehicles and brands with only a couple of minor technical issues to deal with, A dyslexic Model T and a Morris with a fuel problem. The rally was approximately 45miles with the long run being abandoned due to the extensive road works that had popped up after the planning had been done. All entrants were allowed to turn left and right on the way home. Thanks to all that entered.
