CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Recently we bade farewell to our longest active branch member, Tom Clements, at a fitting service at Cutler Park. Tom was in his 73rd year as a member of the VCC and was one of those original foresighted members in the early years working at the grounds, shifting the barn to where is it now, planning the clubrooms and the list goes on. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his sons Ian, Robin (branch members) his daughter Cheryl and their families. (See obituary Page 33) Our grounds are looking magnificent and I was so very proud of them at Tom’s funeral. It is not only due to the wet weather we have had recently that they look so great, but in no small way to the hardworking grounds maintenance team who diligently meet on the first Sunday and third Tuesday morning of the month. In the large grounds we enjoy at Cutler Park, there are all sorts of tasks that need ongoing attention. You don’t need to be an “Atlas” to join them – there are also many jobs that require a light helping hand, so give Mike Foster a ring (359 8260) for further details, or just turn up. You will be made very welcome. (Vaccine passes required.) Thank you to those who voted in the informal vote we have taken as a branch as to whether to change the club’s logo, or keep the status quo. Secretary Rod will be taking the result to the zoom Executive meeting on 12 March to vote on our behalf, along with the other branches and management committee who make up the executive. Your branch committee has purchased a second defibrillator to be kept in the Parts Shed in addition to the one in the main hall which will be used on rallies etc. and put back afterwards. A sign where the second unit will be found will be put in place as the location is officially registered. (Watch this space for a notice of a

SECRETARY’S REPORT The Vintage Car Club of NZ financial year runs from 1st November 2021 to 31st October 2022 Notice to all Members as at 11th Feb 2022. I have just been supplied a list of 114 Canterbury Branch Members who are in arrears or have overdue memberships accounts. You have until 11th March 2022 to pay the overdue account or you will lose your continuity of membership and have to re-apply. Proposed Logo Voting: Total numbers of votes received including joint 285 out of approx. 1300. Please understand I will not be asked at the meeting in March for any comments or opinions. The question will be put to the delegates individually, is the Branch in favour or against the change. I will report the results in the April Hub.
Regards Rod Thrower (Branch Secretary) Chairman’s Report Continued course to use it in the near future.) I dipped into “Vintage Gold” recently. This hard back book records the first 50-years of the branch compiled by Colin Rae from Hub entries and other documents. A good reminder of events from our branch’s past. If you haven’t got a copy, see Secretary Rod for a complimentary one. Many thanks to the advertisers in the Hub who have supported us, some over many years. You will notice that there are two new ones – please support them, as they support us (and let them know where you saw it!) A gold sticker will be presented to the first one who notices the new ones! CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT As we roar through the New Year, we have had several events. These being the Commercial and Annual Rallies. The Car Boot sale, which unfortunately was a bit washed out.
On a positive note, Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee was a grand success again last month. The weather was just perfect. It is inspirational to see lots of new faces, we are obviously making people feel welcome. The grounds looked stunning thanks to Mike and his team. I heard many a comment how good they were looking. I would like to include a funny story or event in my reports for the hub. Please, if you have a tit bit let me know – donations can be anonymous! Things to look forward to this month. 5th March 2022

VETERAN REPORT This last month has gone very quickly, and I missed a couple of events due to the heavy rain events on the West Coast, which meant I had to work two of the weekends. I did however manage to have a weekend away with some good mates in Invercargill to attend the Mobil 1 Classic SpeedFest at Teratonga Park – a very good event. No visit to Invercargill is complete though without a visit to E Hayes and Sons, Transport World and Motorcycle Mecca, which soaked up an entire day. It’s been many years since I’d been in Transport World, and I was thoroughly impressed by the changes there. Great to see the full complement of the veteran ‘Letter’ cars all lined up in a row in order of date, plus numerous other veteran trucks spread throughout the collection. So good to be able to see them all in one place and have plenty of time to look at them closely. The same applies to Motorcycle Mecca – a large number of veteran machines and then everything later from all corners of the world, all immaculately presented in such a great venue. By the time you read this the Annual Rally will have happened – not a great turnout of veterans entered I’m sad to report, but as I write this it’s all go and I’m sure we’ll have a good run on Saturday and then the chance to enjoy some social time on Sunday.
Lineup of 'Letter' Veteran Fords at Transport World, Invercargill. 9
Rear Wheel Brake Run - The next event on the veteran calendar is the Rear Wheel Brake Run on Sunday 13th March. This will be an easy and informal run of around 20km starting at Cutler Park. I’m hoping the shorter distance will encourage a good number out, especially given the price of fuel now. Please see the notice on Page 31 for more details. Dutton Garage Malvern Anzac Day Run - Monday 25th April. Full details of this event (and the entry form) are included in this Hub on Page 28. (Note that this year it will be restricted to only 100 people (unless of course COVID restrictions have ended by then) with first preference given to veteran vehicles, so please have a look and get your entry in straight away so you can secure your spot. This is another perfect event for veterans, visiting the Malvern memorials in Darfield, Sheffield, Hororata and Glentunnel. It will be supplemented with a day of visits to local collections the day before the run to provide a bit more activity for those who are coming from out of town (and there are a few who have confirmed already). Old Cars Bikes and Coffee. A reminder that this coffee and catch-up session is always on the third Sunday morning of every month at Cutler Park. It continues to be really popular, and anyone is welcome to turn up any time between 9am and 12pm. Another good opportunity to either drive your veteran out there, or even bring it on a trailer to give it a run around the grounds or the nearby roads. Or even bring out another vehicle of your choice, or just come for a look and a chat. Next one is Sunday 20th March. Any questions about any of the above, just give me a call. Please leave a message if I don’t answer and I’ll call you back, or send me an email. Happy Motoring Colin Hey

COMMERCIAL REPORT Thanks to all those who braved the rather miserable weather to come along for the Annual Commercial Rally, although a bit wet I believe most people managed to stay mostly dry, although there were a couple of late vehicle substitutions to help with this. Thanks also to Leigh and Tony Craythorne for coming out to arrange the tea and biscuits before the start. Report and results elsewhere in this issue of The Hub. The February Commercial Noggin was hosted by Don Bennetts, thanks to Don and Judy for having us around for the usual chat and look around. Due to unforeseen circumstances the venue for March has been changed. I will advise what’s happening by email in due course or phone me at 352 8802 / 027 289 6201. Neil Shaskey Commercial Convenor

VINTAGE REPORT Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 2022 A Vintage View Whangamomona day trip Thursday 20 January. Clearly the highlight of the rally routes; was the trip to Whangamomona on the forgotten highway. We started the day in overcast Vintage Convenor Graham with misty conditions and as the his well travelled Model A day progressed the weather improved. Motoring took us to the eastern side of Mt Taranaki and inland to the Republic of Whangamomona. Points of interest were the Whangamomona Hotel, the Forgotten Highway and Lake Ratapiko. The first settlers arrived in 1895 and the town was established two years later. Growth of the town was hindered with the loss of 51 men in the First World War and a flood in 1924. The town had a revival when the railway opened in 1933. However, the town went into decline again and the school closed in 1979 and followed later by closure of the Post Office. In 1989 regional boundaries were redrawn and Whangamomona became part of Manawatu / Whanganui region. The residents wanted to remain as part of the Taranaki region and on 1 November 1989, they declared themselves the Republic of Whangamomona. The town continues to celebrate Republic Day during which a vote for a president is held. The main attraction in the town is the local hotel. The original was burnt down and the current hotel was rebuilt on this site in 1912. Graham Evans

MOTORCYCLE REPORT March – The Ides of March – Seasons of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness… – officially the first month of autumn! Winter is on its way; get over it!! Past Events.
9th February – Noggin Night. This was well attended, with Pete from Dan Ornsby’s Ride Forever motorcycle courses giving a very well received talk on his background and just what the object of the courses were, and generally giving the course set down for 19th March a bit of a boost. 13th February – Moped Run. This was a complete wash-out, hosing down rain all day, and nobody turned up… 19th February – Clip-on Run. See elsewhere for the write-up by John Benn. Thanks John!! 26th February – Fish and Chip Run – Cancelled in favour of the Branch Annual Rally. This was to encourage motorcyclists to take part in the Annual Rally, but I’m not sure that was a success. Last time I heard there were several that had entered – in their VCC eligible cars, but only six on bikes… Future Events

9-90s Hi to you all Well the Meikles took us for a nice ride round Spencerville, Kaiapoi and Rangiora on roads many of us never knew about and we finished up at the Wolseley Car Club Grounds on McLeans Island. It was a very pleasant place to have lunch. A big thank you to Colin Hey and the Wolseley Club for their hospitality. The Meikles donated the entry fees to the Wolseley Club. We had a good raffle and the weather was kind to us. There were about 40 cars took part and we extend a big welcome to the new people who came for the first time. Commercial Annual Rally 2022
It was pretty wet and miserable when 20-odd vehicles turned up at Cutler Park for a pre-rally cuppa and chat. After receiving our instructions and question sheet we headed west on the timed section, having a tiki tour through West Melton then heading for Rolleston. We then travelled nearly every road in the Weedons area to cross over and under the new Southern Motorway at every point available. It was interesting to see how many of these roads had been altered, re-aligned or had bridges built to facilitate the building of the new motorway.
We then headed for the Halswell/Oaklands area where a whole series of instructions were either left/right at a roundabout of left/ right at traffic lights – certainly a time to keep the navigator on their toes and the driver guessing. From Halswell it was on to the Prebbleton Lincoln Tai Tapu area through a bit more rural countryside, ending up at the Tai Tapu Domain and Community Centre for lunch. As we pulled in Neil had our “field test” sheet for us – a number of car parts and accessory logos with the brand names missing. Wynns, NGK, and Hella were some of them but knowing more than half seemed pretty good effort by all accounts. There was a large covered area for us all to gather under for lunch, as although the rain had stopped there was still a cool breeze. Our afternoon run took us back to Cutler Park through the Weedons/Templeton area for a hot drink and an impressive afternoon tea spread in the Barn. 18

VOG REPORT Velosolex Owners Velosolex Owners Group FEBRUARY RUN VOG 1 was on leave for February’s run – Jan and I were away enjoying ourselves in the stifling heat of Levin after spending 6 days in Napier. Crikey, day after day of 30 degree temp’s the humidity sure gets to you. But all was in hand with the “VOG boys” a very enjoyable ride had been ably organised by Alastair Wright. Meeting in Aynsley Tce on a cooler morning Feb 8th they set off to Sumner for a journey out around the Port Hills Rd and Ferrymead areas, no hilly bits involved, just plain flat straight riding – so no cardiac arrests or wheezing from neither rider nor bike. I’m told all went well and not even a breakdown or a puncture involved. The route was a circuitous one. After leaving Sumner it was back to Heathcote Valley and the Valley Inn for a long slow conversation filled lunch and the awarding of the infamous trophy. Alastair had initially accepted this under great pressure from the team because of his ambiguous instructions for the start point, people were confused. I don’t know why, it sounded clear enough to me but obviously not. Anyway Alastair very quickly passed the award on to Dave Backhouse in special recognition for his tedious task of “Tail End Charlie” that he performs each month. I think Dave would rather go full throttle rather than drag behind. His help and ‘Solex’ knowledge is always appreciated by the riders that may have a mechanical hiccup on the road. Dave can always seem to get us up and running again. Thanks to Alastair for organising. Royce VOG 1 20

Annual Clip-on Run, Saturday 19 Feb Machinery included a Mini-motor, Sparta, Cyclemaster, Philips, and a fabulous home-built contraption consisting of an old pushbike with two Honda 90 motors spliced together, into a single cylinder! We also had a guest rider on a superbly original 1970’s Yamaha 100 and the White Family in a car (who took turns at riding the Sparta). T’was a fine day and we set off at the speed of light (everything is relative, according to Einstein…) from Prebbleton, then headed around the backroads to The Laboratory at Lincoln, for lunch and a refreshment. Then back to Prebbleton. All up about 20km. Two machines (and riders) suffered the trailerof-shame ride back to Prebbleton. Funnily enough, it was the same riders and same bikes, with the same problems as last year (Doug Watkinson/Mini-motor and yours truly/Cyclemaster). This was surprising, considering the rigorous maintenance programme carried out on these machines, which consisted of shoving them in the shed after last year’s run, in disgrace, and never looking at them since…. All had a good time and a laugh and thanks to Doug Watkinson and Denise McKenzie for organising the run, and Denise again, for driving the back-up trailer. John Benn

Effects of Clean Car Standard on Vehicle Enthusiast Sector The National President has circulated a press release from the Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association (of which the VCC is a member) explaining what’s going on in relation to the Clean Car Standard and the Clean Car Discount, and to dispel some of the misinformation that’s doing the rounds on social media. This is too large to repeat here but can be read at: https://www.lvvta.org.nz/media-items/2022-0215_Effects_of_Clean_Car_Std_on_Vehicle_Enthusiast_Sector.pdf
The first paragraph of the summary reads as follows: “LVVTA is currently engaging with the Federation of Motoring clubs, The Vintage Car Club of NZ, and the NZ Hot Rod Association to provide some co-ordinated assistance to the Ministry. The intention of the four groups who are working together is to collectively assist the Ministry in determining how best the various vehicle types should be defined, so that the exemptions provided in the new Clean Car Standard will enable the Government to achieve its objective of improving the overall fleet, however without compromising the ability of our very small enthusiast sector to continue to enjoy the enthusiast car hobby.”
Grounds Maintenance Team Mike Foster could do with some help with the maintenance of our grounds. How about joining the small, friendly team who keep the place looking so good. Plenty of fresh air, personal space very healthy etc just what you need!

OBITUARY Tom Clements It is with great sadness that we mourn the recent loss of Tom Clements and our kindest thoughts are to be extended to his proud family. Tom’s entry into the VCC membership was very much part of the “early bird few” having joined the club in 1949 participating in events such as the well documented early hill climbs in his Fiat 501S. With the formation of Canterbury, as a stand alone branch in 1956, saw Tom’s involvement in club affairs and becoming Branch Chairman in 1966. This period of the Canterbury Branch involved some massive projects which culminated in establishing McLeans (Cutler Park) as Canterbury Branch headquarters in 1978. As secretary of the McLeans Island establishment committee, Tom was personally involved in the team that set up the “Barn”, the design and building of the Main Hall whilst clearing 35 acres of gorse and sowing grass seed. Tom’s 1930’s Wolseley Drop Head Coupe being reassigned to tractor duties. We as club members will forever be grateful for the incredible contribution of Tom’s efforts and his love for the VCC movement. In his later years Tom and his late wife, Coleen, got much enjoyment from the fruits of his achievements becoming a regular entrant in branch activities in his “Caleche” Vauxhall. Thank you Tom. Registration is on hold, however work is needed to complete its WOF. Owner has nowhere else to park the car. Professionally repainted bronze & mostly sound.
