New Heros for 3 women.

Attending fashion shows after a while becomes a labor of love for a writer and photographer. Admittedly we see many of the same designers, the same models and most of the time the same fashionista crowd. Does it become boring or mundane? NEVER! Each and every show is a celebration of the creative minds of some very talented designers; one can never help but notice new details in designs and construction of the fashion on the runway. It is a never ending journey of discovery. The easy thing to do would be to sit and critique each and every design from each designer. No thinking, just pure subjective opinion spewing. Well, sorry to disappoint, we’re not going there. The old saying, “Opinions are like…….., everyone has one” applies here. Whether I liked what I saw or I didn’t like it, that wasn’t the under-lying reason for some of these shows. Of course we celebrated the creativity, hard work and dedication of the designers but more importantly we acknowledged an unspoken, but a malignant problem that is totally unacceptable in any society. Light was focused on a problem so horrendous, so morally reprehensible that anyone guilty of it should never be permitted to see the light of day. Rarely do I advocate “an eye for an eye” but under these circumstances I would, personally not stop at “an eye”. Domestic Violence has no place in our society and culture. Of those dozen women you know or have just met, 3 of them that have been a victim have new champions in the battle back to life. The Shows you’ll see in this issue were organized unselfishly and they successfully put the subject front and center to make a difference, not for themselves but for those 3 women in 12 and for all women in the future. These events are a tribute to all women and showed no matter the odds against them, success and realizing your dreams is within reach. I congratulate all that were involved along with the fashion community in Phoenix. You made them a resounding success and more importantly made a difference in many lives. Michael Meadows Publisher

Hi, I'm Naomi, an ASU student studying Elementary Education. I'm in my third year here which means I am interning in a classroom (2nd grade this semester) and I love teaching so far. I am also minoring in music, which has always been a huge part of my life. According to my mom, I could sing before I could talk, and I started playing piano when I was 5, handbells when I was 7 or 8, violin at 9, flute at 10 and then from there I just picked up other things to learn for fun. I was in the ASU marching band for the past 3 football seasons and loved it. It's hard work but it really pays off to be a part of something so big (there are around 400 people in it) and the people are incredible. I am blessed to have such strong and loving parents who support everything I do, and I have a younger sister and brother who mean more to me than anything. I live with the craziest and funniest roommates who love to be silly and make life into an adventure just as much as I do.

I have always been taller than most of my peers (I'm a little over 6ft tall now), and while it used to bring me down since I am not athletic at ALL (and people always assumed that I played sports), I decided to see how I was at modeling. I have been modeling off and on now for the past 4 years, my biggest success being in hair shows. My hair has practically been every color, but for hair shows they tend to like to turn me into a redhead. I also love runway and am trying to get more involved in that. I love modeling as a part time job, and see myself continuing to do it for quite a while. It's so fun to create a piece of art with a team of other amazing and talented people. Thanks for reading! Xoxo Naomi

MI M R o c ks F a sh i on Presented By: Phoenix Fashion Week

Brian Hill and his collaborated team known as “Phoenix Fashion Week” brought a delightful fashion event to the MIM in Phoenix AZ. This was his second year creating “MIM Rocks Fashion” a cultural event at the Musical Instrument Museum which highlighted the spring collection of U.S and international designers. Four designers were showcased, two from the U.S., France and Mexico. Paired with these designers were local top stylists that enhanced each designers look with style pieces from accessories to make-up.

This sophicated evening was set underneath the evening stars with over 250 in attendance it made for fashionable socializing and picture taking with glimpses of local celebrities The evening started out with a video montage of a personal interview of each stylist highlighting the inspiration of the designer’s collection, followed by performances of dancing or singing prior to the runway walk. By: Christina Moreno

Photography: MichaelMeadowStudios.com

Alma Primero was the first designer to step on to the runway with lavish elegance and grace. Inspired by structural lines and circular shapes, Alma’s designs were glamorous, sexy, and chic a collection that states modern day Rita Moreno. Traditional black, reds, and whites ruled the spotlight with pops of emerald green and silver. Paired with stylist Fawn Cheng they created a whirlwind of sexiness that only Mexico can bring. Cheng wanted the beauty and sultriness of what Latinas are all about. In the press conference interview she explains that she embraces the Mexican culture and loves to celebrate it stating “Fashion is a passion.” Being part Mexican herself she felt that she had an advantage of knowing how to create the “spicy Latina style” and make it present in the way each model would look on the runway. Everything from the classic bun, dangerous red lipstick, to the sexy stilettos was strategically planned. As a spectator, I could feel the passion and mysterious exoticness that loomed over the crowd; it was a sight of timelessness that could be seen in black and white photos or in a Spanish vintage film. Alma Primos’ designs are a seductive treat for any woman’s physique with custom designs she definitely has a place for “Va va voom!”

Our next inspiring set was Bounty Hunter. Italian leather buckles, and coats had a turning look in the right direction. Designer Zack Wagner represented Men’s USA and delivered it quite well. With stylist Brian Swan a creative and unique blend of urban style, gentlemen class, and ruggedness had sex appeal written all over it! The inspiration for the collection styling came from the movie Drive, a cool and underrated bad boy look with a boy next door attitude. Each model had warm and natural shades of brown, red, orange and black cardigans paired with a great jean. Accessories included scarves, modern suspenders, leather jackets and gloves. Casual yet sophisticated, this look could easily be transformed from daytime wear to a great night time look. Both Wagner and Swan wanted to highlight pieces that were of a modern leather look, typically not seen in the Southwest. Wagner took the masculinity of the wilderness and transformed it into a sleek and refined urban day city slicker. Each piece stated strong, mature, and unstoppable, indeed this was a collection for the man who is transformable and moderately daring. If there ever was a collection for an urban man with rugged dreams this pairing was a harmonious balance at its best!

Boho at its finest, Vintage by Misty is a local Phoenix boutique that represented Woman’s USA owned by Misty Guerrero. This collection immediately reminded me of a 70’s chic closet owned by Cher. Prints made a bold statement as each and every model walked the runway. Billowy dresses, maxi skirts, jumpsuits and tops were accented by chunky jewelry and natural make-up.

Stylist Ginger Murphy collaborated with Misty Guerrero to bring an all American look that has personality and flair. Guerrero believes that great style is in Phoenix and that not too many designers in other cities give Phoenix credit for what is out here. With her boutique in Downtown Phoenix she is inspired by the city life which is eclectic and artsy and states “I’m all about feeling and vibe.” Being authentically vintage each piece seemed to carry a story of its own, you could see the glamour and wild nights on the seductive gold dress with the thigh high slits and blue and purple see-through beach dress that would make Brook Shields want to cover up.

Individually unique and eccentric there was a blend of mystic and freeness to this collection simple yet with an air of dynamics this collection was vibrant with color and versatile prints that could make any woman into an “American Woman.”

Let’s talk French! The great finale of the evening was French designer Caroline Monick with stylist Jill Laine. From a small town in France Monicks’ designs are inspired by songs, and textures that are romantic and sweet. The wonderful Jill Laine was inspired by Caroline’s country and Christian Dior to give a fun and theatrical look for the evening. Laine was very excited to work closely with the designer to learn more about the French culture that she admired very much. Gracing the runway was a lovely consistent of silken pink dresses that reminded me of a Neapolitan ice cream dream. Each deliciously designed with hues of light yellow, cream, and fuisha pink. Colored fishnets stalkings with ribbon accented the girly sweet designs and turned it into a furry of flirtiness. The look was fresh, fun, and whimsically light with details of lined buttons and geometric patterns this was a Cezanne painting at its finest. This belle de la femme was a great ending to the deliciousness of international delight that made for a dessert encore, shall I say, Vive la French! Once again, PFW brought a wonderful group of designers that graced beneath the Phoenix stars from Alma Primero, Bounty Hunter, Vintage by Misty and Caroline Monick were a terrific abundance of diversity that I was honored to see.

Fashion knows no bounds when it comes to giving back to the community as demonstrated with this outstanding fashion show in Goodyear, AZ in February. It is a rare industry when a diverse group comes together, without pay to reach out and help those that are victims in the worse kind of crime, domestic violence. Not only does this crime affect women, it tears families apart and destroys the lives of children. Many, not understanding what is happening in their lives need outside support while their mother is dealing with her own emotions. Designers, models, Make Up artists and Hair Stylists gave of their time and extraordinary skills to present a show to all the local Fashion lovers they could fit in the Hampton Inn & Suites in Goodyear. The surroundings were nothing short of excellent and the staff was second to none. You could tell they understood the importance of the event and what it meant to families in the area.

As always, the designers stepped it up a notch with the fashions they had on the runway that night. As I've said many times in the past and will continue to say, Phoenix and Arizona is no longer a "fly over" state when it comes to fashion. The local designers have pushed the limits and making the coasts take notice. The models, without question commanded the runway with confidence and poise that only comes with commitment to their craft. On the next couple of pages you'll see some great looks from the local designers. The entire gallery of images will be available online no later than March 20th. We hope you'll take a look at all of the great designs and make sure you show all of these professionals love when you see them.

A FASHION STATEMENT To END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Benefiting the

Phoenix Sojourner Center

Presented by Next Coffee Company and The House of Wade Lee By: Christina Moreno Photography: Scottsdale Images.com MichaelMeadowsStudios.com

When you think of domestic violence, fashion doesn’t necessarily come to mind, but on March 3rd the House of Wade Lee and the Next Coffee Company presented “A Fashion Statement to End Domestic Violence.” Local talented designers and artists came together to support the Phoenix Sojourner Center, a domestic violence shelter that provides services to children and women. The brilliant founder behind this event was “THE” Wade Lee Richards, a humble and extremely accomplished salon owner, fashion journalist, stylist and “social media socialite” extraordinaire. Forget Beverly Hills! This official hair stylist for the Arizona Broadway Theater is right here in Peoria, AZ. His talent can be seen in magazines, photographs, theaters, and runways. Wade Lee has created a powerful name for himself in Phoenix AZ; known to fashionistas and designers he has worked and teamed up with the finest artists that the valley has to offer and quickly becomingahouseholdname. Wonderfully inspiring, he and his special team worked for months leading up to the special event. Stylist, models, designers, and photographers teamed up to create awareness ads through photo shoots and video collages. Models

in ads were frequently featured with life like bruising on their face and body to demonstrate the look and pain of a domestic violence victim. Along with the montage of videos, a special segment was featured on “Your Life A to Z on 3TV” with stylist Jennifer O’Bannon. Featured sponsors and local participants included fifteen designers, over a dozen photographers, and special guests and businesses. As the special day arrived, I saw over a two hundred people in attendance for this wonderful cause. Participates graced the red carpet for interviews with host “Real Talk with Louanna” and Fashion Faces not to mention photo opts with photographers. Several donation boxes were quickly being filled with beauty products for the women of the Sojourner Center. As I placed my donation in the box I felt proud, not because of the donation I contributed but of how Wade and his team were so passionate about this cause that it touched many people in the community (and I must admit, I had a little tear come out). Quickly the mood changed and there was an abundance of mingling, coffee drinking, sweet tasting and art viewing on the walls. There was a harmonious balance of light hearted fun with a note of seriousness that captured the mood for the evening. The main focus was the Sojourner Center and the woman and children that are affected domestic violence. A fact that was stated throughout the evening was that one in every four women is affected by domestic violence and many people hide it until it is too late but can be prevented through awareness. A unique mind blowing performance of Acro Yoga began the evening. An “aww” experience showcased the strength and balance of the human body being contorted in different poses. Followed by fashion, fashion, and more fashion! The wonderful host for the evening was the beautiful Jackie Morales from 101.5jamz radio station who was in several designer dresses for the evening. Accompanying her was Wade Lee looking quite dashing on stage wearing

a sophisticated black suite and purple vest as he announced co-founder Rachael Koszegi of Brushed Inc., and gave a heartfelt thanks to all that was a part of the event. As the evening continued more and more people continued to fill every seat to catch a glimpse of the runway show. Local designers included Hour Glass Apparal, Black Russian Label, Fancy Steps, Legendary Style, and many more. Amazed by the abundance of supporters that participated in this event; it was well organized and went out without a hitch. Backstage with Deeds of Love, Dejamone Dezynz and Alina Lovita the models were all eager to be the center of attention, looking fabulously gorgeous from head to toe. Each model had beautifully styled hair ranging from avant garde up dos to wavy curls that mimic vintage classic glamour and flawless make up ranged from dark edgy looks to romantic softness that complemented each designer well. Music infusions by DeeJay Sac Fly kept the runway on beat and mood electrically fun throughout the evening. The second half of the show showcased contemporary chic designer Black Russian Label, Ra apparel, Ordi & Eli, Rayetta Nathe and Sew Twisted Designs each fantastically different and easily appreciated. The evening ended with a finale of unique rental wedding dresses and suits by So, LLC. A happy ending to a cause that the community came together for, “A Fashion Statement to End Domestic Violence” was not only an awareness show but a tribute to those that have been affected by domestic violence. Bringing forth of what was a simple idea, Wade Lee Richards along with an extraordinary amount of supporters turned it into an encore cause that deserves a standing ovation. An appreciation of time and effort that was placed for this cause is priceless. The women and children that of the Sojourner Center will not be forgotten and I hope to see more events such as this in future with “The” one and only, Wade Lee Richards!
