HUNTINGTON LEARNING Center Grand Re-opening in Summerlin Centro de Aprendizaje Huntington Gran Reapertura en Summerlin By~Por: Mark Hackmann
In addition to writing, editing, and advertising in Mi Mundo every month, I also own a learning center in Summerlin. On February 8, 2017, we had our ribbon cutting and grand reopening. I wanted to use this month’s article to give a background on the center and myself. I began working for Huntington Learning Center in 2010 as a part-time tutor to make a little extra cash. In August of 2011, I had decided that I wanted to be an owner not just a tutor. I put together a business plan and some investors and even made to Nevada State Bank for the financing needed to open my own center. Unfortunately, one of the investors backed out and then the entire thing fell like house of cards. Because of this failure, I decided to attend law school instead. I went to Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, CA., which is why I decided to be a part of the group to launch Mi Mundo Magazine San Diego. I continued to work as a tutor all the way through school and when I returned to Las Vegas in 2015, I decided to return to HLC to again work as a parttime tutor. It was under different ownership when I came back because the original owner had passed away suddenly because of a brain tumor. I worked for the new owners for a bit and then I decided to continue tutoring outside of HLC until last fall when I received an email that the centers were for sale. I sold my Dad on my idea and since then we have been working together to help the children of Las Vegas develop their academic skills so that they can achieve whatever goals they have academically as well as succeed in life. The ribbon cutting was sponsored by the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce and we were blessed with the presence of the Publisher as well. Please enjoy some photos from the event.
Además de escribir, editar y publicar en Mi Mundo cada mes, también poseo un centro de aprendizaje en Summerlin. El 8 de febrero de 2017, tuvimos nuestro corte de cinta y gran reapertura. Quería usar el artículo de este mes para dar un trasfondo sobre el centro y sobre mí mismo. Comencé a trabajar para Huntington Learning Center (Centro de Aprendizaje Huntington) en el 2010 como un tutor a tiempo parcial para hacer un poco de dinero extra. En agosto del 2011, había decidido que quería ser un propietario no solo un tutor. Junté un plan de negocios y algunos inversores e incluso hice solicitud en el Nevada State Bank para la financiación necesaria para abrir mi propio centro. Desafortunadamente, uno de los inversores se retiró y luego todo cayó al piso como una casa de cartas. Debido a este fracaso, decidí asistir a la escuela de leyes en lugar de esto. Fui a la Escuela de Derecho Thomas Jefferson en San Diego, CA, por lo que decidí formar parte del grupo para lanzar la revista Mi Mundo en San Diego. Le vendí a mi papá mi idea y desde entonces hemos estado trabajando juntos para ayudar a los niños de Las Vegas a desarrollar sus habilidades académicas para que puedan lograr cualquier meta que tengan académicamente, así como a tener éxito en la vida. Our beloved Smith Center celebrated its 5th Anniversary through an unforgettable evening of song and storytelling as we looked back on its last five years. Broadway stars Adam Kantor (“Rent,” “Fiddler on the Roof,”) and Betsy Wolfe (“Bullets Over Broadway,” “Falsettos”) emceed the event which featured some cast members from Broadway musicals such as Wicked, Rent and Idaho and magic from The Tempest with Teller along with some surprise guests. Clint Holmes rounded the magnificent concert with “This is the Moment” and the night ended with a emotional interpretation of Leonard Bernstein’s “Take Care of this House”. The concert was followed by an elegant champagne reception. Happy birthday Smith Center we wish you many more years of success…

We as drivers in the streets often pass through red lights and accelerate through yellow lights.

This is a serious problem in Nevada, especially in our city of Las Vegas. We were classified about a year ago, as the fourth worst city in America for drivers running red lights, according to the National Coalition for Safer Roads.

A violation for running red lights can lead up to: - A traffic ticket - Points on your driver’s license - The loss of your driver’s license - Increase of your insurance rates - Possibly a cancellation of your policy by your insurance company - If your job requires a clean driving record, an infraction for ignoring the red light can cost you your job Also, running a red light is a decision that drivers make in a split second, which can cause an automobile accident, leaving people injured or even dead. It is alarming that every year thousands of people are injured or killed because of this small, but serious infraction. Many of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists, or occupants of other vehicles. The worst thing is that these types of accidents are easily preventable. One of the most common excuses for drivers is, “the light changed very fast from yellow to red.” And while yellow light times can vary throughout southern Nevada, depending on the speed of the road, many drivers cause accidents by being distracted or being in a hurry, among other things. Remember, that yellow light does NOT mean “go faster”. Yellow means caution, be prepared to slow down, and stop. Therefore, when you see the yellow light, the prudent thing to do is to stop if possible before entering the intersection. It is important to be aware of the responsibility of operating a motor vehicle. While we do not wish for anyone to be involved in an accident, we are here to help if it happens.

Y es que además, pasarse la luz roja es una desición que los conductores hacen en fracción de segundo, que puede causar un accidente automovilístico, dejar heridos o incluso causa la muerte. Es alamante como cada años ocurren cientos de muertes y decenas quedan heridos a causa de esta pequeña infracción. Muchas de las víctimas son peatones, ciclistas u ocupantes de otros vehículos. Lo peor es que este tipo de accidentes pueden ser prevenibles. Una de las excusa más común de los conductores es, “la luz cambió muy rápido de amarillo a rojo”. Y aunque la luz amarilla varia rápidamente en todo el sur de Nevada, dependiendo de la velocidad de la carretera, muchos conductores ocasionan accidentes por estar distraídos o por estar apurados, entre otras cosas. Recuerde, la luz amarilla no significa “ir más rápido”. Amarillo significa precaución, estar preparado para disminuir la velocidad y detenerse. Por lo tanto, cuando vea la luz amarilla, lo prudente es detenerse si es posible antes de entrar en la intersección. Es importante tomar conciencia sobre la responsabilidad ante el manejo y aunque no le deseamos a nadie estar en un accidente, pero si pasa estamos aquí para ayudarle.

Who would imagine that in 2017 we are living in a world where slavery is still present? It is estimated that human trafficking alone generates around $150 billion annually. Approximately 80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation, and 19% involves labor exploitation. There are approximately 20 to 30 million slaves in the world today, the average cost of a “slave” is $90.00 and according to the U.S. State Department, “600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders every year, of which 80% are female and half are children from the age of 12 to 14…California harbors being 3 of the FBI’s 13 highest child sex trafficking areas in the nation are Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego”. Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry. How terrifying is that? But what is Human or sex trafficking? and is there a difference?
¿Quién se podría imaginar que en 2017 estamos viviendo en un mundo donde la esclavitud sigue presente. Se estima que la trata de seres humanos genera por sí sola alrededor de 150.000 millones de dólares anuales. I was afraid of the police because I had seen police officers in the house that I had been locked in. When they found me I was so afraid of them. They brought me to the hospital where I was left alone in a room. I tried to kill myself because I thought that since I had escaped, they were going to kill me and my family. However, the nurses and doctors heard me fall on the floor and were able to help save my life right on time. My mother was able to find me and bring me back home to France.

Sarah-Jane Vega: Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. The victims are forced to perform sexual acts and are basically raped on a daily basis under the covering of both legal and illegal prostitution by clients of various social backgrounds and various ages. Traffickers and organized crime syndicates profit from selling these victims. We all know that sex sells, with an increase of demands for prostitution and pornography in our society, the need for supply is even greater than the number of women that are willing to work in the sex industry. This is what creates the opportunity for traffickers to do business. Many of them die from sexually transmitted diseases, suicide, drug overdose and homicide. CNB: Do you believe that people with low self-esteem or weak personalities are easier to recruit by the traffickers? who is at risk? SJV: Traffickers look for people who are susceptible for a variety of reasons, including psychological or emotional vulnerability, economic hardship, lack of a social safety net, natural disasters, or political instability. The trauma caused by the traffickers can be so great that many may not identify themselves as victims or ask for help, even in highly public settings. When I was speaking at a human trafficking task force conference a few years ago, a former pimp confessed that “he would go into malls and near schools to look for young women who seemed to have low self-esteem and would be easy to manipulate. He also said that he would never have tried to groom someone into a life of prostitution if he knew that this person had a strong love/family support around them. It would be too difficult.” “If children don’t have their very real needs met from home and in healthy relationships with peers, they will find a new family or, more likely, the new family will find them. Whoever meets their needs wins their hearts.” ~Esse Johnson Sara-jane continues explaining that “in general many people believe that traffickers only look like what we see on music videos, television, and movies. Stereotypical things like men with gold chains and rings and gang affiliations. However, not all traffickers look and act like this. Many of them are normal

looking members of society that you would not suspect to even be involved in any type of criminal activities.” During the past five years, she has been reaching out to women working in the sex industry on a regular basis. She has encountered many victims and was able to hear their story. Some have been trafficked by family members to help pay for drug addictions. Some are trafficked by street pimps. Some were groomed and forced into the life by other women in the sex industry. Many were runaways. There is no discrimination of race, age, economic and social backgrounds. “I have seen young girls, mothers, and older women being trafficked. However, I have only met 2 male survivors. I know that even though trafficking victims are mostly female, there are male victims as well” she said. CNB: how can we protect our loved ones against sex trafficking? SJV: Education is key. Many victims of all ages can fall into the arms of traffickers because of a lack of knowledge on what to look for and knowing the warning signs of sex trafficking. I encourage everyone to learn as much as they can and share with the people around them what they have learned. i.e. Family members, coworkers, teachers, clergy members, etc. CNB: How is Social Media playing a part in this problem? SJV: Be Aware of the dangers of social media, We are encountering more and more victims that were recruited online through social media. i.e. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Tinder, etc. I would really encourage parents, legal guardians and family members to check in with their children’s accounts on a regular basis and educate them on the dangers of sex trafficking and the ways that traffickers recruit victims online. Encourage them to share with their parents if anyone whom they suspect is trying to groom them for trafficking. The mother of a victim once said that to not supervise your child’s social media accounts is like giving access to your child’s bedroom to predators. Unfortunately, she learned that lesson the hard way. CNB: What should we do if we suspect somebody is being a victim of human trafficking? SJV: First and foremost. You need to always keep the safety of the potential victim and your safety in mind. Some traffickers can be very dangerous and violent. Never meet with them in a private area or try to rescue them yourself. Second. Reach out for help. Find out if you have a local organization that helps victims of sex trafficking around you, they should be able to help you in getting the victim to safety. CNB: Tell me about your organization, what do you do for the victims and how do you find them? SJV: Stand 4 Justice Movement exists to EXPOSE, Human Trafficking by speaking at many churches, events, fashion shows, TV, news stations, Radio shows and on social media. We are using television, radio and social media to get the word out so that the truth will reach every corner of the earth. We PREVENT trafficking by raising awareness and educating the public, we equip people with tools to save those who could be the next victims. We are reaching out to women trapped in trafficking at brothels, strip clubs, porn conventions, casinos and on the streets. If victims come to us to ask for help we are able to connect them with organizations that can help them with their needs and EMPOWER, young women, parents, survivors and the community with the tools that are needed to say no to sexual exploitation in our community. CNB: What kind of support do you need from the community to help victims of human trafficking? SJV: I was saved from trafficking because of my prayer and I have a strong belief in the power of prayer. Anyone can partner with us, as we are constantly in need of financial support to continue our efforts against human trafficking.Our immediate need is for a good conditioned SUV with 4 wheel drive to help us on our outreaches to women working in prostitution in northern California and Nevada. We have not been able to go back to Nevada since June of 2016 due to car issues and not having enough room for our whole team and the gift bags that we bring to the women that we reach out to. Another way to support her and her organization is by inviting her to speak at events or educational training, and you can also follow Stand4Justice on social media, they often post helpful videos and links to documentaries on Human Trafficking. It’s been over 8 years since she escaped and within those 8 years she has been able to graduate from 3 bible schools, 2 english as a secondary language schools, moved to America as a missionary to fight human trafficking, started my own non-profit organization against human trafficking and most recently got married and had a baby boy. A report was released as USC nears opening of USC Village, the largest economic redevelopment project in the history of South Los Angeles. A new independent economic impact study on USC shows that the university is one of California’s strongest economic engines. The study found that USC spurs $8 billion annually in economic activity in the Los Angeles region and California.

Of those, 31,000 jobs are directly supported by USC-related expenditures and 22,000 jobs are through secondary spending by businesses and workers down the USC supply chain. USC also attracted $697 million in sponsored research to fund studies in biotech, public health, biomedical engineering, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, among others. The study, commissioned by the university and conducted by Beacon Economics, reviewed the impact of USC’s operational expenditures during the 2015-16 fiscal year. The analysis used university-related spending, including capital projects, spending by USC faculty staff and students and expenditures made by out-oftown visitors, as well as the operation of Keck Medicine of USC. The snapshot indicates the university will contribute well more than $80 billion to the economy over the next decade. During that period, USC produced about $4.2 billion in total direct economic output, $1.9 billion in indirect economic output and $2 billion in induced economic output for a total of $8.1 billion in economic impact across the state. “It shouldn’t be a surprise that one of the premier private universities in the country has such an outsized impact on the economy of Southern California,” said Christopher Thornberg, founding partner of Beacon Economics. “USC is a very significant asset to the region and the state.” The report also highlighted USC’s investment in its local community through partnerships and programs. USC supports more than 400 community initiatives in local neighborhoods around the University Park Campus, located in South Los Angeles, and the Health Sciences Campus, located in Boyle Heights. These initiatives include a bilingual newspaper delivered to 28,000 households, the Boyle Heights Beat; USC Neighborhood Academic Initiative, a seven-year college prep program serving nearly 1,000 local students annually; and the USC School for Early Childhood Education, a Headstart program that serves 4,700 neighborhood children. “USC is partnering with our neighbors to create a pipeline to higher education for their children and a pathway to employment for them,” said Thomas S. Sayles, USC senior vice president for University Relations. “Our education outreach programs impact thousands of children from pre-school to college while our economic programs help small businesses and workers succeed.” The study comes as the university exceeds its goals in one of the greatest fundraising efforts in the history of higher education and the biggest physical expansion in the university’s history. Nikias recently announced the extension of USC’s campaign as it nears the $6 billion mark 18 months ahead of schedule. And later this year, the $700 million USC Village opens directly north of the University Park Campus. The massive retail and residential project will enhance campus life for students while opening up an array of new options for the neighborhood. Nikias also announced plans for the construction of a new hospital on the USC Health Sciences Campus, focused on cutting-edge medicine and surgery.

In 2002, the Canadian corporation Pacific Rim registered in El Salvador. It was invited by the Salvadoran government to exploit the potential of the country’s gold and silver resources. During its initial explorations, Pacific Rim identified at least 25 favorable sites for the extraction of gold. One of these sites is known as El Dorado, in the department of Cabañas. In December 2004, the company formally requested permission to operate the El Dorado mine, but the government denied permission for inconsistencies in the environmental impact study and because the company did not have the authorization of the owners of the land where the exploitation of gold and silver would be carried out.

In response to the Salvadoran government’s refusal to grant the El Dorado project exploitation permit, in July 2008, Pacific Rim filed a lawsuit against the Salvadoran government through the World Bank’s International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

The company demanded El Salvador pay them $77 million for the amount invested before they were denied the authorization permit. Later, this requirement was increased to $301 million and finally reduced to $250 million. At the end of 2013, Pacific Rim filed for bankruptcy and sold its shares to the Australian transnational company Oceana Gold, which continued the lawsuit process. After lengthy litigation, on October 14, 2016, the International Court ruled in favor of the Salvadoran government and against the mining company. The verdict also determined that the company must pay $8 million to the Salvadoran government to cover the procedural costs of the litigation. Following this ruling, on November 24, 2016, the Movement of Victims Affected by Climate Change and Corporations (MOVIAC) submitted a letter to the Legislative Assembly requesting a ban on all metal mining in the country. This request opened an intense debate that is increasingly gaining strength. On February 6, the Central American University José Simeón Cañas (UCA) and the Catholic Church presented a proposal for a law to ban metal mining. The request for a ban is justified by the serious social and ecological impacts caused by the mining industry and by the high degree of pollution and environmental deterioration that the country is currently suffering. According to international experts, El Salvador is the country with the most environmental deterioration in the continent, after Haiti. The United Nations has described El Salvador as the country with the least amount of water available throughout the continent, while the Ministry of the Environment has reported that more than 90% of surface water is seriously contaminated and only 10% is suitable for use as potable. This water crisis could become much more serious if gold and silver mining projects are located in the basin of the Lempa River, which is the most important river in the country. Its basin makes up 50% of the national territory, and houses 70% of the country’s population. El Salvador is the only country in Central America that does not have mineral exploitation and in an opinion poll conducted by the UCA in June 2015, 76% of the population is against

A finales del 2013, Pacific Rim se declaró en quiebra y vendió sus acciones a la transnacional australiana Ocean Gold, la cual continuó con el proceso judicial. Después de un litigio largo, el 14 de octubre del 2016, el tribunal internacional falló a favor del gobierno salvadoreño y contra la compañía minera. El 6 de febrero, la Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA) y la Iglesia Católica presentaron una propuesta de ley para prohibir la minería de metales. La solicitud de prohibición se justifica por los graves impactos sociales y ecológicos causados por la industria minera y por el alto grado de contaminación y deterioro ambiental que padece actualmente el país. Según expertos internacionales, El Salvador es el país con el mayor deterioro ambiental en el continente, después de Haití. Las Naciones Unidas han descrito al Salvador como el país con la menor cantidad de agua disponible en todo el continente, mientras que el Ministerio del Medio Ambiente ha reportado que más del 90% de las aguas superficiales están seriamente contaminadas y sólo el 10% del agua es adecuada para usarla como agua potable . the opening of mining projects. Despite this opposition, there is great pressure from transnational companies to initiate gold and silver mining projects. This, of course, is due to the findings from Pacific Rim that discovered approximately 1.2 million ounces of high-purity gold and more than 7.5 million ounces of silver in the subsoil of the northern part of the country. In addition to another 558,000 ounces of gold and 1.2 million silver of lower quality. Apparently, this is a good thing; however, the experiences in neighboring countries such as Guatemala and Honduras demonstrates how harmful the mining industry is to people and the environment. Especially when it comes to water resources. According to a recent UCA publication, the Marlin mine in Guatemala uses about 6 million liters of water per day and nearby communities have reported 40 dry communal wells in the 8 years of the mine’s operations. Likewise, in the region of Valle de Siria in Honduras, the San Martín mine has dried 19 of the original 23 rivers in the area throughout its’ nine years of operation. These effects could be worse in El Salvador due to the fragility of its ecosystems and the population density of around 300 inhabitants per square kilometer. In these circumstances the human rights of the population would be seriously affected. In this regard, the Attorney for the Defense of Human Rights (PDDH), in a recent statement said: “The harmful effects of mining activity constitute serious violations of the human rights of the population. Among them is the right to life, health, water and food. The concern persists because the mining industry still has an interest in developing its projects in the country and there is no legislation or institutional mechanisms to guarantee the protection of the environment against mining activity.” The interests of the mining industry to which the PDDH refers to is manifested in a series of actions carried out by the mining company Oceana Gold, which MOVIAC has repeatedly denounced. For instance, in a letter delivered to the Legislative Assembly on November 24, 2016, MOVIAC states: “We know that in all the impoverished countries of the world, transnational mining companies use the same strategies: division of communities, murder of environmentalists, bribing corrupt officials, and false media campaigns such as the promises of job creation and social development. The truth is that mining does not generate more jobs than it destroys. Where there is mining, there is no agriculture, there is no livestock, there is no tourism, there is no health, there are no peaceful or free communities.” For all these reasons, at the moment, in El Salvador there is a strong debate about the need to pass a law that definitively prohibits metal mining.

El interés de la industria minera a la que se refiere la PDDH se manifiesta en una serie de acciones llevadas a cabo por la compañía minera Ocean Gold, las cuales MOVIAC ha denunciado reiteradamente. Por ejemplo, en una carta entregada a la Asamblea Legislativa el 24 de noviembre del 2016, MOVIAC afirma: “Sabemos que en todos los países empobrecidos del mundo las empresas mineras transnacionales usan las mismas estrategias: la división de las comunidades, el asesinato de ambientalistas, el soborno a funcionarios corruptos y las campañas mediáticas falsas al igual que las promesas de creación de empleo y el desarrollo social. La verdad es que la minería no genera más empleos de los que destruye. Donde hay minería, no hay agricultura, no hay ganado, no hay turismo, no hay salud, no hay comunidades pacíficas o libres”. Por todas estas razones, en este momento, en El Salvador existe un fuerte debate sobre la necesidad de aprobar una ley que prohíba definitivamente la minería de metales.

Venezuela is experiencing a metamorphosis all too wild to even stop and catch your breath for a second. From just a few decades ago, being the Ronald Reagan version of a shining sovereign state upon a hill of Latin American countries, where people actually migrated to in search of pursuing a dignified life and an opportunity to seek work, to now becoming a quasi-dictatorship that has abrasively turned its back on democracy, freedom of speech, and the quintessential desire of everybody on this earth-the ‘inalienable’ right of pursuing happiness. There are countless articles ranging from the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, American Quarterly, NPR, and the New York Times documenting the misery Venezuelans are dealing with on an everyday basis. The list is long: first, inflation is estimated at 600% on a year to date basis, food is a bona fide scarcity, malnutrition is a reality and people gather in lines longer than Disneyland rides for basic staples such as milk and maiz (corn flour). According to a WSJ Op-Ed, medicine shortages, for things such as antibiotics, are drastically increasing infant mortality rates. A lack of law enforcement and security have spurned extremely dangerous cadres of gangs and narco-traffickers, stamping Caracas-the nation’s capital-as the most violent city in the world. Electricity is rationed, meaning in certain periods of the day the lights are literally not functioning, hampering business and commerce. Once successful companies are now nationalized or bullied by the government in being obsolete. Currency shortages have hurt trade both domestically and internationally so much that many transnational companies have waived the white flag and left Venezuela. Out of 190 countries, The World Bank ranks Venezuela 187 in their 2016 Ease of Doing Business Report, beating Libya, Eritrea, and Somalia. Amazing that war-torn Syria ranks higher than Venezuela. Venezuelans’ right to protest is opaque to say the least. Ask former mayor Leopoldo Lopez, who led a student protest in 2014 and was indicted with a 13-year prison sentence for dubious accusations such as inciting violence. I, by chance on business, happened to be at the 2014 student protest and can assure you, from what I saw with my own eyes was a peaceful protest by students and their peers and instigation of violence from government loyalists. Per the Americas Society/ Council of Americas, as of June 2016 there are 96 political prisoners in Venezuela, three are imprisoned for their use of the most violent platform deemed by the government: social media. Freedom of speech is being repressed, lately epitomized by President Maduro’s government apparatus shutting off CNN in Spanish from the nation’s airwaves. Why? For misinterpreting and distorting news in an

Hay innumerables artículos que van desde el Financial Times, el Wall Street Journal, el American Quarterly, el NPR y el New York Times, documentando la miseria con la que los venezolanos se enfrentan cotidianamente. La electricidad se raciona, lo que significa que en ciertos períodos del día las luces no funcionan literalmente, obstaculizando las empresas y el comercio. Las que una vez fueron empresas exitosas son ahora nacionalizadas o intimidadas por el gobierno en ser obsoletas. La escasez de dólares ha dañado tanto el comercio nacional e internacional, que muchas empresas transnacionales han renunciado y han salido de Venezuela. De 190 países, en 2016 el Banco Mundial clasifica a Venezuela de 187 en su informe de facilidad para hacer negocios, superando a Libia, Eritrea y Somalia. Es increíble que la devastada Siria ocupe un lugar más alto que Venezuela. El derecho de los venezolanos a protestar está opaco, por decir lo menos. Pregúntele al ex alcalde Leopoldo López, que dirigió una protesta estudiantil en 2014 y fue acusado con 13 años de prisión por acusaciones dudosas como incitar a la violencia. Yo, por casualidad en negocios, pasé a estar en la protesta estudiantil del 2014 y puedo asegurar que lo que vi con mis propios ojos fue una protesta pacífica de los estudiantes y sus compañeros, y la instigación de la violencia de los leales del gobierno. Por la Sociedad de las Américas/ Consejo de las Américas, a junio de 2016 hay 96 presos políticos en Venezuela, tres están encarcelados por su uso de la plataforma más violenta considerada por los medios de comunicación social del gobierno. La libertad de expresión está siendo reprimida, expresada últimamente por el aparato del gobierno del presidente Maduro que apagó CNN en español de las ondas de la nación. ¿Por qué? Por malinterpretar y distorsionar las noticias de manera “inadecuada”. Si

“inadequate manner.” If “fake news” is a controversy in the U.S., in Venezuela fake news is what the government disseminates daily. Moreover, according to various human rights groups, local journalists face constant harassment and Kafkaesque detentions. Also, Venezuela closed its borders to foreign journalists quite some time ago, no longer issuing work permits to Western reporters. In February 2017, two Brazilian journalists investigating a Venezuelan corruption ring were detained for simply practicing their profession. Once they were released, their equipment (cameras, phones, video) was confiscated by the authorities. Local television channels and news outlets are meager mouthpieces of the Chavista government, a medium to further indoctrinate the citizenry, grotesquely similar to Castro’s Cuba, rendering Venezuela, no wonder, on becoming a Cuba Lite replica. Internationally, Venezuela is a loose cannon. Forging strong ties with narco-guerilla terrorist organizations such as Colombia’s FARC, creating far away alliances with Iran, and subsidizing Cuba with oil and dollars in exchange for having full access to the dictatorship playbook fostered by the late Fidel Castro. When considering Venezuelan-U.S. relations, time after time diplomats and ambassadors have been expelled respectively from each country, a tit for tat dance that doesn’t address the issues at the core. Venezuela,

Forjando fuertes lazos con organizaciones terroristas narco-guerrilleras como las FARC de Colombia, creando alianzas lejanas con Irán y subsidiando a Cuba con petróleo y dólares a cambio de tener acceso completo al libro de juguete dictatorial promovido por Fidel Castro. Cuando se refiere a Venezuela-EE.UU., Diplomáticos y embajadores han sido expulsados respectivamente de cada país, un baile que no aborda los temas centrales. Venezuela bajo el predecesor de Maduro, el ex presidente Hugo Chávez trabajó

under Maduro’s predecessor, former President Hugo Chavez, worked aggressively to distance itself from the U.S.-except sell oil to American buyers. Chavez instead forged strong ties with China, borrowing billions of dollars from the Chinese to help finance his social programs; shifting their dependence to their northern neighbor to the Middle Kingdon-on the other side of the planet with very little cultural norms in common.

Everything being written so far in this piece is not a revelation for people that have in interest in Venezuelan affairs. One can say that I am stating the obvious. To my chagrin, probably so. Yet, it cannot be uttered enough that democracy is truly in retreat in Venezuela, and government opposition is isolated and abandoned. It is nothing short of a miracle that full-fledged violence hasn’t marred the country day in and day out. Yet, nothing has been done internationally aside from a recent attempt by the Vatican to sponsor dialogue and compromise between the Chavista government and the opposition. The talks stalled due to the opposition walking out because, so far, President Maduro has not released jailed activists, allowed humanitarian aid, or appointed new electoral authorities. And that’s that, the Vatican proposed dialogue talks have hit a wall. Moreover, the Organization of the American States (OAS) could do much more. It does deserve recent credit for urging support for a recall referendum against President Maduro. Words and declarations are a nice start but the OAS should go further and emulate Mercosur’s actions of suspending Venezuela from their economic group. Mercosur did so courageously by putting Venezuela on notice for violating the bloc’s democratic principles and not incorporating key rules on trade and human rights. The dent would be deeper and the pressure more unbearable for Venezuela if the OAS would suspend Venezuela until free and fair elections are held again. Or here is another thought, the U.S. could indirectly pressure the OAS by posturing with more tenacity by limiting subsidies to the OAS. Listen, I don’t have to educate people that money talks in this world.
Todo lo que está escrito hasta ahora en esta pieza no es una revelación para las personas que tienen interés en los asuntos venezolanos. Se puede decir que estoy declarando lo obvio. Para mi disgusto probablemente así. Sin embargo, no se puede decir lo suficiente que la democracia está verdaderamente retirada en Venezuela, y la oposición del gobierno está aislada y abandonada. Las conversaciones se estancaron debido a que la oposición se retiró porque hasta ahora el presidente Maduro no ha liberado a los activistas encarcelados, ni ha permitido ayuda humanitaria ni ha nombrado nuevas autoridades electorales. Y es que, el Vaticano propuso diálogo, y han golpeado una pared. Además, la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) podría hacer mucho más. Merece un crédito reciente por instar a apoyar un referéndum revocatorio contra el presidente Maduro. Las palabras y las declaraciones son un buen comienzo, pero la OEA debería ir más allá y emular las acciones del Mercosur de suspender a Venezuela de su grupo económico. El Mercosur lo hizo valientemente poniendo a Venezuela en conocimiento por violar los principios democráticos del bloque y no incorporando reglas clave sobre comercio y derechos humanos. La mella sería más profunda y la presión más insoportable para Venezuela si la OEA suspendiera a Venezuela hasta que se celebren elecciones libres y justas. O aquí hay otro pensamiento, los Estados Unidos podrían presionar indirectamente a la OEA para que posture con más tenacidad limitando los subsidios a la OEA. Escuche no tengo que educar a la gente que el dinero habla en este mundo.
Partisan politics aside, former President Obama balked at the opportunity of sanctioning Venezuela’s top officials for corruption and drug trafficking. The U.S. State Department and President Obama opted instead to promote dialogues between the two states that unintentionally weakened the opposition, and like the Vatican attempt, it unintentionally bought more precious time for the quasi-dictator government (I’m talking about Venezuela) to keep the opposition at bay. Despite how you feel about Trump’s presidency, if one were to make the claim of being an advocate of democracy, free enterprise, free and fair elections, and a human rights supporter of access to basic staples and sense of security, one cannot morally forbid itself

First, the U.S. Treasury department enforced sanctions of Venezuela’s recent appointed Vice President-Tareck El Aissami-and financier Samark Lopez for protecting drug traffickers and working with Mexican and Colombian cartels. Also, President Trump without much coverage blasted a tweet early February: “Venezuela should allow Leopoldo Lopez, a political prisoner & husband of @liliantintori (just met w/marcorubio) out of prison immediately.” Say what!? Where was news of the aforementioned tweet on the mainstream media headlines? Hmmm. In the fall of 2016, Venezuela was on the cusp of landing a referendum to recall President Maduro and put an end to the economic collapse. However, Mr. Maduro’s puppet court delayed the electoral process because it knew if a new election were to occur President Maduro would not stand a chance. An “okay so what” attitude can be the mindset of many Americans or libertarians that do not want to meddle in international affairs. Their argument carries credence and validity. However, the Venezuelan constitution carries a stipulation that if a president were to be recalled in the latter half of a six-year term, then by law, the Vice President would be catapulted as acting president until the next scheduled elections. That’s a scary concern for the United States and the world. Reason being the Venezuelan Vice President that the U.S. recently sanctioned is not only involved in drug trafficking and organized crime, he is alleged to having strong ties to Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah. According to Emanuele Ottolenghi, senior fellow for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, he brazenly states Venezuela and Vice President El Aissami represents “the nexus between organized crime and radical Islam at the gates

(He) is a dream come true for Tehran and Havana.” To summarize, Venezuela can be a real security threat that is only a three-hour flight from American shores. During the 1920’s, Venezuela was the 2nd largest oil producing country next to the United States. In the same time period, it was the largest oil exporter in the world. In 1953, Life Magazine coined Caracas “the capital of opportunity of South America.” In 1970, Venezuela was one of the richest countries in the world, with a GDP higher than Spain and Greece. My family lived it, in the 70’s many of my own kin emigrated from Colombia to Venezuela because of the opportunities Venezuela presented. Venezuela had and still possesses one of the largest oil reserves in the world. But we’ve seen this story before, a country depending excessively on one natural resource falls victim to the Dutch Disease, Venezuela being no exception. Today, Venezuela is a narcocracy and petro-state. A country of oh-so-many talented, creative, and intelligent people that have fled the country in droves to the U.S., Spain, Canada, Mexico, and beyond to find some sense of normalcy, safety, and security. But not everybody has the luxury or the bravado to leave. Understandably so, home is home. However, institutions, governments, the finance world, media, politicians, and people of influence can do more to support the opposition and a once democratic state, and apply pressure towards the thugs ruling Venezuela. And then maybe Venezuela can at least have a chance to take a few breaths and work itself back to being somewhat of a resemblance to a country it once was.

As a concise, workable unifying model of the mechanics of creation, the Russell Cosmogony well has the capacity to completely transform our current technology and carry the human race into the next stage of our intellectual unfolding. Considering the majority of our current modern technology was achieved almost entirely by the process of sensebased empirical reductionism, it is a testament to our ingenuity that we have achieved the conveniences we have. Additionally, we collectively carry on our lives, never questioning the basic assumptions that led to the development of this technology, thinking of ourselves having mastery over our environment. Simply put: if it isn’t broken, don’t bother fixing it. Yet to Russell, and other mystics who have glimpsed into this universe as one whole, our current state of the art surely resembles a cumbersome, overly complex Rube Goldberg machine, taking a convoluted path to accomplish the simplest tasks.

Paying your power bill will ultimately go the way of the dinosaurs, however that change will only truly come when we change our economic ideals and replace TAKING with GIVING. We must learn to collectively GIVE back to our planet rather than TAKING so as to fulfill our responsibility or suffer the consequences of living upon the surface of an unbalanced planet. Just think of the aesthetic improvement alone of our countryside and suburban streets if there were no power poles and lines, yet still enjoying our modern appliances and the labor they save. It is the deepest hope of my own soul that by freeing the human race from its need to waste so much of our daily lives working for money that we use to purchase our needed power, power which should be as free as the water, air ,and food that can be procured, that slowly but surely mankind can begin to utilize their respective individual time exploring the creative arts thus truly expressing the purpose which all of us have, but so few seem to find due to our misplaced beliefs and values. We should not need to suffer in order to be happy. Happiness is your birthright if we all but have the courage to seek it. The Russell science embodies elegance and simplicity so sadly lacking in our current complex curriculums. We teach theories as if they are absolute truths and give credit by name to those who ‘discover’ preexisting natural phenomenon turning science, a supposedly noble and objective pursuit, into a game of oneupmanship. Our academic scientific elite suffer from a collective myopic view and to discard long accepted theorems and axioms in favor of unfamiliar Natural Laws is often met with dogmatic rejection. We must be willing to accept new ideas, however, if we are ever to reach higher levels of progress, just as we don’t fully appreciate the basic assumptions underlying our western culture without understanding the altogether different perspectives of the eastern culture. It is this full understanding of all aspects of POLARITY that will be the greatest aid to any scientific endeavor we wish to embark upon, now or in the future. The flagship technological application of the Russell Cosmogony is without question THE RUSSELL TWOWAY DIVIDED SPECTRUM COIL, which completely redesigns the orthodox solenoid coils man uses today for many purposes such as turning electrical energy into mechanical force. In academic parlance these would fall into the class of ‘electromagnets’ since to them the universe is an electromagnetic one, rather than an optical universe of gravity controlled light. Armed with this false premise we have wound our solenoids with one-way wiring and are expecting full power. into TWO before uniting to produce the phenomenon we recognize as ‘energy’ (heat and light), and all suns and sun prototypes such as carbon are formed between two gravity poles of two pairs. With this concept practically applied we will be able to prove that what we think of as ‘magnetism’ should not be considered a force in and of itself but rather the local effect of gravity, or the field surrounding reversals at wave crests and troughs. Initial experiments to prove this have already taken place two years ago and this is only the very beginning. This one revision alone will change humanity’s understanding forever, such that theoretical physicists can abandon the hopeless effort of trying to unify gravity with quantum mechanics, which also has no place in Nature. One day every scientist will know that the same wave mechanics governing galaxies, nebulae and solar systems also govern atomic systems and all size scales from infinitely large to infinitely small. They will know this when they fully comprehend that dimension is purely an optical illusion. Since the Russell two-way coils replicates Nature’s method of dividing the static condition into dynamic action and multiplied power, it will do what no ‘ordinary electromagnet’ or ‘magnetic field’ will accomplish. Two such applications would be high-efficiency induction heating and transmutation, both of which Russell was able to demonstrate at different points in his lifetime. Working in the Westinghouse Lamp laboratory in Bloomfield, NJ in 1927, Russell demonstrated the transmutation of water vapor into 17 different substances by the use of two pairs of solenoid coils, verified by spectral analysis. With modern day emission and mass spectroscopy the USP Science & Research committee will fully replicate these experiments and begin development into a full mathematical workup of the individual pressures of the elements that can be adapted into technology to procure hydrogen from the atmosphere as an initial step. Using even higher octave contractive pressures we will eventually be able by the same method, to split isotopes from carbon and silicon to produce metals never before seen in industry, with qualities of unbelievable tensile strength and conductivity. This application will forever transform the practices of material science and metallurgy. Dr. Russell also demonstrated the violation of the 2nd law of thermodynamics by producing more output energy of heat than input power with his sex-paired coil concept. More than anything during the late 50’s and early 60’s both Lao and Walter Russell desperately wanted to demonstrate to the world that there was a better way to produce Niagaras’ worth of power without resorting to the dangers of radioactivity. If you investigate how a nuclear power plant functions in its basic operation, you will find that radioactive isotopes, such as plutonium, are really only used to boil water and the resulting steam pressure rotates a turbine to generate power by rotating ‘magnetic’ field induction. Since they knew the true source of heat lies within the cold of space they were able to demonstrate the boiling of water by using two centripetal spiral coils

A deep understanding that electricity is really a process of Nature, rather than one of four supposed ‘fundamental forces’ of the universe will drastically change how we manufacture and utilize electrical power for our many purposes. We will supply heat and power to homes, businesses, apartment complexes, and every other “need” imaginable this way. Generators/appliances will be self-motivating not requiring wires and plugs. Power will no longer be CONDUCTED from one spot to another, but rather will be PROJECTED directly from its source in space anywhere at any time. I have but merely touched upon a few of the numerous applications of the wealth of knowledge the Russell’s have left behind for us to develop. The greatest resource available to us however, is not technology, but people themselves. If we join together our like-mindedness, there is no problem we cannot solve, and we can shape the world to be everything we ever dreamed it could be for all of us. Now is the time to take action. Science, technology, and industry should be about more than simply satisfying human desires and making life easier for society. These areas of human activity should be about solving the major challenges facing humanity today. And today, more so than any other time in history, they are. A prime example of this 21st century thinking is Google X - a division of google that the company describes as a moonshot factory, funded exclusively in order to “invent and launch ‘moonshot’ technologies that they hope could someday make the world a radically better place.” [1] And Google is not an isolated case; take as another example of this general trend Space X and their goal of developing technologies not only to colonize Mars but to allow humanity to recolonize Earth in the event of a global catastrophy, protecting against existential risk, [2] or the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, an LLC founded by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, and funded to the tune of $1 billion, to “advance human potential and promote equality in areas such as health, education, scientific research, and energy.” [3] Months after the announcement of its initial founding, the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative also pledged $3 billion to an even more ambitious plan: “cure, prevent, or manage all human disease by the end of the century.” [4] Today, industry is quickly becoming the biggest and best-funded driver of new and bold solutions to the biggest challenges facing humanity today. And I would like to argue here that there is no bigger challenge facing the developed world today than what has come to be referred to as the “demographic timebomb.” This phrase describes the rapidly-accelerating increase in the portion of the population over the age of 65, which is a consequence of extending lifespan without extending healthspan (the total duration of life free from chronic disease). The sad fact is that today the majority of chronic illnesses are either caused directly by ageing or have age as their largest risk factor according to the World Health Organization.

This field of science is called geroscience, and we have seen dramatic progress at slowing aging, extending healthspan, and preventing age-related chronic illness in lab animals within the past half-century. We have managed to double the lifespan of lab mice, extend their healthspan by as much as 30%, and increase the lifespan of worms by 1000%. These efforts and successes, led largely by non-profits like the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in the US and the Biogerontology Research Foundation in the UK, have paved the way for commercial entities to now begin entering the field with the aim of translating these geroscience medicines into practical therapies for use on human patients. In just the past 4 years, major tech giants have turned their sights on this major societal problem, galvanizing the birth of a veritable longevity industry within the span of just a few years. Calico, founded in 2013 by Google, Human Longevity Inc., co-founded in 2013 by J. Craig Venter (the man who first led the charge to sequence the human genome), and Unity (founded in 2016, and backed by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos) have all been funded to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a piece with one goal in mind: cure human aging and prevent a large majority of chronic illnesses afflicting developed societies today. The aging process is now known to be responsible for the majority of chronic diseases afflicting the citizens of developed nations today. Surely, if this doesn’t qualify as the biggest problem facing society today, then I don’t know what is. And, luckily, it is a challenge with hints of radically-disruptive yet practically-realizable solutions already on the horizon - solutions that have now laid the foundation for the most radically disruptive paradigm shift in modern medicine and global health care in the entire history of humanity, away from disease treatment and toward multi-disease prevention by targeting the ageing process itself, extending not only lifespan, but healthspan as well. Albert Einstein once said, “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” This desire to improve lives through education is, in fact, often why many teachers enter the profession. While most educators favor face-to-face time with students, other aspects of the job – like planning and grading – often prevent them from interacting as much as they’d like. Limited by sheer hours in a day, teachers find themselves unable to provide counseling and individual attention that students may need. Research shows that students learn in many different styles, whether it be through physical motion, visual aids, social interactions or auditory exchange. Despite a direct correlation with higher retention rates, today’s teachers often lack the time to provide students with sufficient individual attention. In fact, the average teacher-to-pupil ratio for U.S. public schools is 26.8, further decreasing the amount of individual guidance teachers are able to provide. As a result, this often forces teachers to take a “one size fits all” approach to instruction. Despite these difficulties, recent technological advances may be able to help improve student outcomes and retention. The increased integration of technology into the classroom and, more specifically, developments in machine learning are emerging as major tools. If properly implemented, educators may be able to use these technologies to spend less time on more onerous tasks, like grading, and place more focus on the human element of teaching. Machine learning, a form of artificial intelligence (A.I.) that gives computers the ability to learn, has been steadily advancing for years, and we may soon see its positive affect on education. Today, the United States is ranked 25th in the world in quantity and quality of high school diplomas and is falling behind other nations in math, science and reading. Many education leaders believe machine learning may be the necessary solution to get the U.S. back on track as a world leader in education. As computers become more integrated into the classroom, and online education becomes more widespread, machine learning seems poised to be the future of education. Advancements in technology have given computers the ability to handle many of the tasks that eat up much of teachers’ time. Three capabilities of machine learning stand out as beneficial to improving education: A.I. tutoring, tracking student knowledge and outcomes, and automated grading. Implementing these three functions of machine learning into the classroom could allow teachers to make education a more personal and tailored experience. A.I. tutoring allows teachers the ability to offer students proactive, answer-based tutoring options – with “human” style. Research has shown that teachers have very little time to dedicate to tutoring, even though tutoring has been proven as an effective tool to bolster student retention.

Computers may soon have the capability to answer students’ questions in real time, provide examples, feedback and even monitor student’s growth. Machine learning is also capable of tracking students’ progress to improve outcomes. Learning analytics and adaptive algorithms can give computers the ability to track students’ progress through courses and predict areas where they may struggle in the future. This can help teachers prepare individualized teaching methods to improve the student’s overall outcome in the course. This process of adapting teaching methods to a student’s needs has been done by teachers for years, but machine learning can handle the learning portion and allow teachers to have more time to focus on the student. Finally, machine learning can provide automated, streamlined grading assistance. The Washington Post recently reported that teachers spend more than an hour and a half at home grading homework after nearly eight hours in the classroom. As we know, multiple choice tests have been graded by computers for years, but advancing technology may soon allow computers to even grade more advanced work, like research papers and essays. The technology isn’t quite there yet – computers have difficulty judging logic, persuasion, irony, etc. – but if achievements like ALEKS are any indication, we may soon have computers that can handle nearly all of the rote, mechanical aspects of teaching, allowing educators far more time to spend with their students. We are not yet at the level where technology can completely eliminate some of the more time-consuming tasks for teachers, but recent progress shines light on a very promising future. Teachers already have seen the impact that smarter technology can make in the classroom. Ultimately, machine learning in the classroom can make good teachers great and great teacher even better.

Formula 1 is a very complex business. The big teams have almost 1,000 people working in various areas around the clock, from engineering to marketing, in order to be able to bring two cars for the two team drivers on the grid for the 20 races of the 2017 season. This year the sport witnessed some changes. On the commercial side, very interesting to the US market, Liberty Media bought the commercial part of the sport and after 40 years the ringmaster, the one who brought the sport to today’s level, Bernie Ecclestone, was ousted and a new regime took over with Chase Carey as Chairman and CEO of F1, Ross Brawn as Managing Director Motorsports, and Sean Bratches as Managing Director of Commercial Operations. Commercially, we should expect a higher integration with social media, as we witnessed during the tests, as well as new ideas on expanding the viewership. On the technical side, things got started well in advance. The sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), has already announced revised technical regulations with the cars having wider tires, lower rear wings, new delta shaped front wings, and wider chassis, opening new opportunities for a potential shake up in the order. In the driver movements, the biggest shock was, without doubt, the retirement of the newly crowned World Champion Nico Rosberg, driver of Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport team. Of course the empty spot on a team that dominated the sport the last 3 years was a first hand opportunity for every other driver. All the drivers had signed contracts, but the lucky one was Valtteri Bottas who was released from his contract with Williams Martini Racing in order to race for Mercedes. At the same time, Felipe Massa who has announced his retirement from F1 was called back into action by Williams, who he raced for in 2016. With all the new parameters, the first tests that took place, in Circuit de Barcelona in Spain, were the crash tests for the teams and drivers. The effort of the whole work craft to build and bring their car for 2017 has materialized. Having concluded the test, Valtteri Bottas was the fastest

En los movimientos de los pilotos, la mayor sorpresa fue sin duda la retirada del recién coronado Campeón del Mundo Nico Rosberg, piloto del equipo Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport. Por supuesto, el puesto vacío en un equipo que ha dominado el deporte por los últimos 3 años fue una oportunidad de primera mano para todos los pilotos. Todos los pilotos ya habían firmado contratos, pero el afortunado fue Valtteri Bottas, quien fue liberado de su contrato con Williams Martini Racing para competir por Mercedes. Just to compare the lap times and have an impression of the changes brought by the new technical regulations, the 2016 pole position was at 1:22.000 by Lewis Hamilton and a race distance at the same track of 66 laps in total. Mercedes the bar high; they completed 558 laps in total which is equivalent to 2597 Km with Ferrari, surprisingly, second with 468 laps and 2179 Km. On the downside, the teams that had trouble were Williams (213 Laps – 992 Km), McLaren (208 laps – 968 Km), and Toro Rosso (183 Laps – 852 Km). The team to beat, again, is Mercedes ,who had a bullet proof performance in the 3 of the 4 days running into slight electrical problems in the last day. The design of the Newey inspired Red Bull Racing is not eye catching. The designguru went into a slightly simple, compared to the others, designed RB13 car, but we cannot count out what the car has below the cover. The best secrets are the not visible ones, and Newey is well known for his creations. The surprise of the test was definitely the team of Red Cars from Ferrari. The Maranello-based team last won a drivers championship back in 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen and in 2008 they took the constructors championship. After that, they lost the championship twice in the last race with Fernando Alonso. With the strong leadership of Sergio Marchionne and radio silence, they are trying to keep their heads down and let the work on the track speak for itself. Another historically good team is having a hard time. The British McLaren team, who is partnering with Honda on the engine supply, had issues in the first days of testing. The partnership entered its 3rd year and the problems experienced in the initial stages of the test created headaches. The contract of Fernando Alonso, who went to McLaren with high hopes, is running out at the end of this year and the team will do its best to keep him motivated and to get his signature on a new contract. The US team, Haas F1, with European based operations is entering its second season with Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen as its drivers. Last year, they got the 8th position in the Championship (out of 11 teams) having scored 29 points. The Mexican driver Sergio Perez kept his spot at Force India, although he had offers from other teams, hoping to have a real opportunity for 2018 when Ferrari will most likely look around to replace the 37-year old Kimi Raikkonen whose contract will expire at the end of this year. Everything is ready for an exciting and long season in F1. This will be a totally new era with high expectations from the fans for a great show and lots of developments. The NFL combine is set up for collegiate hopefuls to display their physical skills in order to impress representatives of all 32 league franchises. General managers, and head coaches will assess what they see, and evaluate various aspects of potential draftees in accordance with how well they perform the various criterion designed to measure certain skills. This being the first season that the 49ers two team leaders are together will plunge them into a task that could have a significant impact on the future of the 49ers efforts in the NFL. I think Lynch is ecstatic to be a part of this particular process in an official capacity for the first time as a general manager. His attendance prior to this season was from a media position. John will now be observed by his former media colleagues, questioned, quoted, published, and he’s loving it. Head coach Kyle Shanahan, meanwhile, has been in attendance of this event before but not at such a level of responsibility as he is this year. Both John and Kyle appear comfortable during the process. In fact, John Lynch may be setting a new standard for how to conduct media conferences during this event. He’s been amazing. It’s kind of unfair considering his media experience. This year’s combine brought a higher level of talent than the 2016 campaign in every positional group with the exception of the quarterbacks. The quarterback class is no worse than last season, but it remains to be seen as to whether it’s any better. Unfortunately, the quarterback position is one of the more pressing needs of the 49ers. One thing, however, that 49ers fans can feel confident about, is the fact that if there is a quarterback of worth to be found in this year’s class, Kyle Shanahan, who has an above average knack for recognizing talent at the position, will locate him. The 49ers have to find and sign a quarterback before the free agency period that starts March seventh and runs through the ninth. Free agents looking to land a position with a new club won’t want to sign on to a team struggling at that most important of positions. Kyle Shanahan has the quarterback in mind that he wants. The problem is Kirk Cousins is currently the starting quarterback with the Washington Redskins. A few seasons ago, when Kyle was the offensive coordinator in Washington, it was he who discovered Cousins in the draft. Washington is currently demanding a heavy price for a Cousins deal, and may make it impossible for the 49ers to land him this season. If Washington doesn’t sign Kirk Cousins to a long term deal this season, the 49ers could get him for nothing more than a negotiated deal with Cousins next season. The question is can they wait? More about that in the next issue!

Well Hello again to all of our Shark fans, and hope everyone has their Playoff tickets bought and ready!! Yes, people, the Sharks are once again in the playoffs and poised to make another impressive run for the Stanley Cup. The Playoffs are five weeks away, the Sharks lead five teams in contention for the postseason. Our Sharks are 7-pts ahead of the Anaheim Ducks, and the Edmonton Oilers, and are led by the Sharkstud, Brent Burns. We have 17-games left, and 10 of those games are all at home. It’ll be a nice test for the Sharks, who will play the Capitals, who have the league’s best record, and are very comfortable on the road. Games also coming up are with division rivals Anaheim and Edmonton, and are always a great preview of what is to come in the playoffs. Anaheim is hurting right now, with their goalie out with a back injury, and the fact that the Ducks have been completing a “youth movement” within the organization, they may be a little distracted for playoff play. Edmonton, is chugging right behind the Sharks, and with the incredible play of Connor McDavid, may be the biggest test for the Sharks getting through these last few games of the season. Most of the teams were out there making moves, and “jockeying” for position in the playoffs, but for the Western Division, the Anaheim Ducks made the most of their moves by adding two-way player, Patrick Eaves, and the Ducks stayed busy with the pick-up of Jiri Sekac from Chicago, and Carl Hagelin from Pittsburgh. How about the Kings picking up Jerome Iginla from the Avalanche? It’s definitely going to be interesting these last few games for sure. Lastly, we want to wish the great “play-by-play” announcer Bob Miller, a happy retirement. The Kings are going to be without their “good luck charm,” and biggest fan for the organization. Bob Miller will call his last and final two games (April 8th and April 9th) with the Anaheim Ducks, and the Chicago Blackhawks. The NHL, will all be missing Bob Miller, who was the Kings biggest advocate/supporter, and just an overall incredible person. He will be greatly missed. As usual, Stay Tuned!! And let the fun begin, in the playoffs, where we will see the best hockey played by the best teams, as they desperately attempt to the get to the “Holy Grail.”
