Currently in cosmetology it is very fashionable to apply the technique of Visagism or Contouring, to give the perfect shape to the face. This technique was created by American Kevyn Aucoin (1962-2002), first figure of the world of makeup, friend of the stars in the 80’s and 90’s, and author of several books on makeup. But as always there is injustice in all areas, currently most people know this method of makeup only by Kim Kardashian, who has become synonymous with Contouring thanks to her great popularity. Before attempting Visagism, it is necessary to know our face form. For this we have the following types of faces: -OVAL: referred to as the perfect face. The forehead is slightly wider than the chin, the cheeks dominate the contour and the chin is shorter than the forehead. -ROUND: the face is almost as broad as it is long, rounded and short jaw. - SQUARE: wide front, cheekbones in line with the chin. - Rectangular or elongated: Long and narrow forehead with elongated chin. - TRIANGULAR: Narrow front and wide jaw. - INVERTED TRIANGLE: wide front and narrow jaw. - HEXAGONAL OR DIAMOND: Face angular and broad in the areas of the temples, broad cheekbones and pointed chin. Once we have determined our kind of face, we create the perfect form, the oval. To do this, we use light and dark bases, or even light and dark colored powders, with which you will achieve magic by giving shade in the correct areas and lighting in areas for enhancement. With this technique we can get a nose profiled, delicate cheeks, a refined chin, etc. Remember to apply the contour in the key areas such as: under the cheekbone, the sides of the nose and the temple. La frente es un poco más ancha que la barbilla, las mejillas dominan el contorno y la barbilla es más corta que la frente. - REDONDO; el rostro es casi tan ancho como largo, mandíbula redondeada y corta. - CUADRADO; frente ancha, pómulos en línea con la barbilla. - RECTANGULAR O ALARGADO; frente larga y estrecha con la barbilla alargada. - TRIANGULAR; frente angosta y el maxilar ancho. - TRIÁNGULO INVERTIDO; frente ancha y maxilar estrecho. - HEXAGONAL O DIAMANTE; rostro anguloso, ancho en las zonas de las sienes, pómulos anchos y mentón puntiagudo. Una vez que hemos determinado nuestro tipo de rostro, la idea es lograr darle la forma perfecta; es decir, la del rostro ovalado. Para ello, utilizamos bases claras y oscuras, o también polvos de tonos claros y oscuros, con los que lograrás hacer magia, dándole sombra en las zonas correctas e iluminación en las zonas a realzar. Con esta técnica podemos lograr una nariz perfilada, unas mejillas delicadas, un mentón afinado, etc. Recuerda aplicar el contorneador en las zonas claves como son: debajo del pómulo, en los laterales de la nariz y en la sien. Let’s face it! You can’t have a perfect beauty routine without the perfect skincare routine. Whether you regularly get facials or take the reins when it comes to skincare, it’s important to always acknowledge what your skin needs most. Regardless of the season, your skin always reverts to its natural state which can either be dry, oily, combination, or just flat out sensitive. My number one rule to skincare is to cleanse, cleanse, and CLEANSE! When? Morning and night. When it comes to buying a face cleanser, remember you’re buying for what your skin needs, and not just what everybody else is using. This means reading about a product’s ingredients and what it can do for your skin type. After a good cleanser, my next step is a toner. A toner is good for removing any excess oil or traces of dirt. It can also benefit evening out hyper/ hypo-pigmentation and close pores. Most toners come in liquid form which can be applied using a small cotton ball to evenly distribute the product.

Newspapers around the world have reported about temperatures lower than -20 °C, and some have even reported that temperatures have dropped to -30 °C. Let’s escape from the northern winter: if you live in the United States or Canada, make the choice and come to live the Southern adventure.

Así que ha escapar del invierno del norte, si se encuentra en Los Estados Unidos o Canadá, decídase y venga a vivir la aventura del Sur.

Mexico could be the best destination, given its proximity with the US. Mexico has extremely beautiful, relatively unexplored destinations, such as the Desert of Sonora, shared by both countries. You can explore there the place where NASA trains its astronauts, according to the portal http://elpinacate.conanp.gob.mx/. “El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar is considered one of the Mexican priority regions, given that it is imbedded into the Sonoran Desert, a desert whose tropical-subtropical origin and rainfall patterns allow for an enormous biological richness” (Houk, 2000). ”From the four deserts of North America, the Sonoran one houses the biggest diversity. It covers not only territory belonging to Sonora, but also a portion of the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur, as well as Arizona and California in the United States”. This scenario reminds us of how beautiful our planet is, and of the thousands of places we can visit. Another destination, a little southward, could be Costa Rica, given that it is one of the smallest countries of the American continent, it has set out to transform itself into an international touristic destination; its government prioritizes tourism, and it enjoys a great climate all year long. I recommend you to travel after 20 January, which is when the peak season ends in several Latin American countries. However, in other countries like Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay, the summer is beginning, and so, the peak season starts in the southernmost parts of South America. To travel to any of these destinations, you can stop over Panama, the HUB of the Americas, an almost obligatory stopover for any flight departing from the gelid North American territories, like Canada or the United States. During these months let us not forget about Miami, Florida; one of the most requested destinations inside the US thanks to its warm climate, though there are some days where the wintry northern portion of the continent influences its temperature and the climate gets a little colder than expected. If you want to travel to Miami, you will find temperatures ranging from 21 to 26 °C. So watch out for the temperatures of Southern Florida during January and part of February. Some months ago, we talked about marvelous, scantly explored destinations like Manaos in Brazil: it is a truly unique destination, as Manaos, situated to the northernmost parts of Brazil, possesses a dazzling beauty; if you travel by plane, you will find inside the Amazonia – the world’s most exuberant jungle – a vibrant city, spectacular all day long. Few travelers go there because there are several connections to be made until you arrive there, but if you like adventure, you can surmount the Amazonas river and get to Manaos. You will be truly amazed by this great city inside the dense

Otro destino ya un poco más al sur, puede ser Costa Rica ya que es uno de los países más pequeños de América se ha dado a la tarea de convertirse en destino turístico internacional, ya que su gobierno tiene como prioridad el Turismo y de hecho goza de un gran clima todo el año. Te recomiendo viajar después del 20 de enero, pues para estas fechas ya termina la temporada alta en algunos países de América latina. Pero en otros como Chile, Argentina, Uruguay empieza el verano y por ende la temporada alta en el sur de sur América. Para ir cualquiera de estos destinos puede hacer una parada en Panamá, tiene HUB de las américas, una parada casi obligada para cualquier vuelo que salga de los gélidos territorios Norte americanos como Canadá o Los Estados Unidos. Recordemos por estos meses Florida, Miami; es un el destino más solicitado dentro de Estados Unidos, gracias a su clima cálido, aunque algunos días influye en su temperatura la temporada invernal del norte del continente entonces y puede ser un poco menos cálido de lo acostumbrado. Si, desea ir a Miami se encontrará con temperaturas que oscilan entre los 21 y los 26 grados centígrados. Así que tenga en cuenta las temperaturas del sur de la Florida para estos días de enero y parte de febrero. Hace unos meses atrás hablamos de destinos maravillosos y poco explorados como Manaos en Brasil, es un destino único, pues manaos muy al norte de Brasil, deslumbra pues después de pasar, si viaja en avión, una parte importante de la amazonia que es la selva más exuberante del planeta. A lot of young women come to me and ask me why they cannot find their dream man. Working as a matchmaker for over 10 years, I’ve heard it all. When I review their social media pages it becomes quite evident why prince charming might not see a partner but sees a quick hookup. Provocative and barely there “outfits”, duck lips, and butt selfies. My male clients often ask me why women do this to themselves. They’re disappointed when they finally get to meet the real life woman after looking at heavily retouched pictures. They wonder why these women have a need to show and tell all on social media. Ladies, let’s try and build you up so that men can respect you. It’s one thing to post photos for work. That’s brand building. It’s another thing when you post pictures of yourself just to get attention. It is the wrong kind of attention you’re asking for. Too many people in today’s media frenzy society possess this misconception of getting attention by doing literally anything for likes on social media including but not limited to taking most or all of their clothes off! Keeping up with the Jones, false celebrity status or shock value are not substitutes for style, compassion, elegance and being a rolemodel. Likes and viewership are not important for developing character. Although many people might act like characters on social media, they do not possess character. I always encourage the concept that you need to hold the bar high and strive to live up to your best. If you’re not interested in a long-term partner right now, you can skip my advice. If you want a man to stick around and take you seriously, keep reading. Anyone can get attention with their clothes off. That’s not desirable in the long run. You have to leave something to the imagination. Even if he has the most serious of intentions, your potential suitor is wondering if that’s on social media for everyone to see, what can you offer him? Sure he might hit on you in a DM, but it isn’t because you have a great pair of character traits in that last photo. You’re the fun girl, not the woman he wants to bring home to meet his parents.

Como dueña desde hace más de 10 años de una agencia de citas por internet, muchas mujeres chicas se acercan a preguntarme por qué no pueden encontrar a su pareja ideal. A este punto ya lo he escuchado todo. Entonces cuando reviso sus redes sociales, la respuesta se vuelve bastante evidente y entiendo porque el príncipe no busca en ellas una pareja sino más bien un entretenimiento por un rato. Blusas provocativamente bajas, labios de pato, leggings que dejan todo al descubierto y el trasero al aire; esas imágenes literalmente lo dicen todo. Mis clientes masculinos a menudo me preguntan por qué las mujeres se hacen esto a sí mismas. Se decepcionan por complete cuando por fin consiguen tener una cita en persona con esa chica ideal y resulta ser totalmente diferente a lo que se veía en las redes sociales por sus fotos tan retocadas. A veces ellos mismos no entienden porque las mujeres muestran además, todos sus atributos en sus cuentas públicas… Chicas, les daré unos consejos para ayudarlas a que los hombres las respeten desde antes de conocerlas. Ojo, una cosa es publicar fotos por trabajo, eso es construir tu nombre como marca; pero es muy distinto cuando publicas fotos de ti sólo para llamar la atención sin objetivo y aquí es cuando empieza el mal manejo de tu imagen. Actualmente la gente se vuelve loca y publica lo que sea, literalmente, por obtener “likes”; y al parecer la primera idea que se les viene a la cabeza es quitarse la ropa. Pero, antes de que ese momento de desesperación llegue debes detenerte y pensar, de qué manera quieres que te vean y si realmente te gustaría que un día el príncipe azul vea tus redes y piense “esta es la mujer con la que quiero pasar el resto de mi vida”. Cualquier persona puede llamar la atención mostrando su figura, pero tienes que dejar algo a la imaginación. Demuestrale que eres divertida, pero no exhibicionista, que realmente eres tú la mujer que quiere llevar a conocer a sus padres. Otro error común que muchas personas cometen en las redes sociales, es convertilo en una sesión de asesoramiento, cada pequeño detalle de su vida

While we’re on the topic, I know it’s flattering to have all these likes and comments on your IG, FB, and Snapchat. It’s a quick fix an escape from your world so to speak and makes you feel great. It can become very addictive. But don’t let it go to your head, thinking they’re now your friends with the best intentions! Be careful, you never know who is on the other end. Could be someone putting on a façade with photos of a lifestyle that isn’t real, could be much, much worse.

One thing I will say is women are just as guilty about fabricating lives on social media. There are “jetset” models who travel the world weekly, go to the best clubs, stay at the best hotels, wear designer clothes like there is no tomorrow. The reality is there’s a sugardaddy jetting them around while they play with someone on the side. It’s not just men who do try to load the dice in their favor on social media.

Ease up on wanting to get your sexy on in the beginning. If he disappears on you for holding out, you know he wasn’t that interested in you. The more effort a man puts into a relationship, the more he values it. Trust me, you’ll weed out your garden fairly quickly this way. Believe it or not, men welcome and appreciate a classy, confident, self-respecting woman. It’s refreshing to see a woman of elegance and strength. The goal is to meet a quality, long partner. That is, unless you’re looking for a fling and looking for some fun. If you’ve made it this far, you’re looking for a stable relationship. Another big mistake women [and men] make on social media is turning it into a counseling session. Every little detail of their private life becomes public commentary. You turn friends against your partner and most of them don’t have a vested interest in the situation. Remember, most people are just curious, very few actually care. Putting your partner on blast like that might actually blow up your relationship unintentionally. Ladies, I want to end things by saying place more value in yourself. Remember that it is how you treat yourself that sets the pace of how people view you. If all you show is that you’re an object, then you will be treated as such. We are more than an IG post and some scant clothes [or lack thereof]. We can do so much more. I mean, we even had a woman running for president and certainly have had women as prime ministers. We don’t need to apologize for having standards. The right man will rise up to meet them. Just give him a chance to!

Hay que tener muchísimo cuidado porque existen gran cantidad de casos de acoso, extorsión, etc. Quiero terminar haciéndoles entender que las mujeres somos más que una cuenta de Instagram para el mundo, por eso debemos valorarnos y apreciarnos por lo que somos. Las mujeres estamos brillando en el mundo, ya hay incluso mujeres Presidentes de países, demostremos al mundo que somos más que una foto sexy.

If you ask a doctor, he will tell you that there is a medical condition called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy or, broken-heart syndrome, which is the weakening of the left ventricle and is usually the result of severe stress. Even though it’s still a rare condition, women are more likely than men to experience the sudden symptoms and it can happen regardless of the person having normal coronary arteries with no severe blockages or clots. It is called broken heart syndrome because of the number of people that experience it after emotional stress caused by a traumatic breakup or the loss of a loved one. The symptoms are very similar to a heart attack or stroke; it starts with a physical pain in the chest area. Knowing how to grieve is, in many cases, crucial to avoid having a broken heart. Grief is not limited to the loss of someone, as we can experience grief after moving away from home, after finishing college, or even after retiring from a career you enjoy and you won’t be able to continue anymore. There is not a set time to grieve, some people bounce back faster than others. Studies show that grieving for about a year is a normal period of time to come to terms that life has to go on. The first moments after “a loss” are the most important and the support we can get from our family and friends is indispensable. At the beginning the bereaved will experience a roller coaster of emotions from guilt and anger to despair and even fear. Then they will go through the most common grieving stages. First is denial, we refuse to accept the facts, “this is not happening to me, it is not true.” This is a coping mechanism we use to avoid dealing with the lost. Then we become angry; we question our faith and our beliefs and ask why? Who is responsible for this? Who to blame? At this point it is imperative

to open up and search for comfort. Some people go to their pastors or priests to try to understand what is not easy to accept. This is usually when the broken heart occurs. The pain is so unbearable, we don’t want to be alive, we want to go too, we can’t find a reason to stay. According to Todd Fisher, his mother and actress Debbie Reynolds died at age 84 after suffering a stroke while making the arrangements for her daughter’s funeral — his mother died of a broken heart. I honestly don’t feel there is a scale to measure the pain of losing someone. The grief of losing either a son, a parent, or even a spouse is unbearable in the moment. There is no worse, there is no easier…having said that I cannot imagine the pain a parent feels when losing a child. I only know how I felt when I lost my dad and I am certain that, God forbid, I survive any of my daughters, a part of me will be gone with her and I am not sure the rest of me would be of any good for the other two. Almost a year to the date, after my dad passed, I had one of the most profound conversations with my grandmother. She said to me: “this is not the way it should be; I should have died first.” At that moment with my then one-year old on my lap I thought to myself “I don’t think I can be as strong as she is.” Losing a child, she said, is a lonely journey, no one understands the pain unless you have gone through it yourself. It wasn’t until years later when a very dear person to me passed that I felt what she was taking about. Sandy was the happiest boy, the kindness boy, the sweetest boy. I met him when he was about a year old and I used to babysit him while I lived in Florida. I can easily say I learned to be a mom with him. From changing diapers to teaching him words to making him Halloween costumes, we had so much fun together, we were two peas in a pot, we just clicked! I looked forward to my time with him and even though I didn’t stay in Florida much longer, we shared a special bond that lasted for many years. He was my Sandy and I was his Yaya! Eventually life took us to different places but I kept in contact with him and his family. I celebrated his achievements and watched him become the amazing young adult he was meant to be. One day after he came for a short visit to Las Vegas and we shared fun times with my daughters, I received a call from his dad. I remember getting the call like it was yesterday. I was listening to the words in disbelief. For a moment, I thought it was a joke, a very bad joke. It had to be! I had just seen him, we laugh together and took pictures! He was just here! Then I realized that it was true, Sandy was gone. “I am never going to see him again,” I said to myself and my heart hurt, it

Ella me dijo: “No es como debería de ser, yo debería de haberme muerto primero” y en ese momento con mi hija de apenas un año de edad en mis brazos me dije a mí misma “No creo que pueda ser tan fuerte como ella es”. Perder a un hijo, dijo ella, es la experiencia mas solitaria del mundo, es una agonía, nadie entiende el dolor a menos que lo hayas pasado tú mismo. No fue hasta años más tarde cuando una persona muy querida para mí murió, que sentí de alguna manera lo que ella estaba tratando de explicarme. Sandy era el niño más feliz. El chico más amable. El chico más dulce. Lo conocí cuando tenía alrededor de un año y solía cuidarlo mientras vivía en Florida. Puedo decir fácilmente que aprendí a ser una mamá con él. Desde cambiarle pañales a enseñarle palabras nuevas, a hacerle disfraces de Halloween. ¡Nos divertíamos mucho juntos, éramos inseparables! really did. I went through the same stages of grieving. I didn’t want to believe it; I wanted to blame somebody and then I was just sad, so very sad. All the dreams and projects had stopped there, in that moment, in that empty moment. I could possibly write pages about this or not … the feeling is so overwhelming. And then thoughts of his parents… and Debbie Reynolds came to mind. I don’t know how they were able to overcome such a terrible loss. So, the answer is yes, we can die of a broken heart. If we don’t come to terms with the facts, if we don’t accept that this is the cycle of life, that we have no control over it, that we only have now and perhaps now won’t be enough, then we can get to the third stage which is depression and stay there. Depression is perhaps the hardest of them all as we don’t feel the need to move on; we get comfortable with our pain and we, in a weird way, stay in that stage. We certainly can get stuck in time; our life can be over as we know it with no answers and no motivation to do anything. It is not until we accept the facts, that we can start to heal and accept the horrible reality that we can actually move on. Acceptance is the last stage of grieving and how we get there is what will determine if we are ready to continue our journey without the person we lost. There is no good way to grieve and we all do it differently, so it is important to be patient and open when we deal with situations like this and we need to give support to a bereaved. The better our understanding of grief is, how it is healed, and how can we be there for the bereaved, the better we will be able to help them and help ourselves. Easier said than done.

Sandy y yo era su Yaya! Eventualmente la vida nos llevó a diferentes lugares, pero mantuve contacto con él y su familia, celebré sus logros y verlo convertirse en el increíble joven adulto que estaba destinado a ser. Un día después de que vino a Las Vegas para una corta visita y compartimos momentos de diversión con mis hijas, recibí una llamada de su padre. Recuerdo la llamada como si fuera ayer. Escuchaba las palabras con incredulidad. Por un momento pensé que era una broma, una broma muy mala. ¡Tenia que ser! ¡Lo acababa de ver, nos reímos juntos y tomamos fotos! ¡Él estaba aquí! Entonces me di cuenta de que era cierto, Sandy se había ido. “Nunca más voy a volver a verlo”, me dije y en ese momento me dolió el corazón, de verdad que si. Pasé por las mismas etapas de duelo. No quería creerlo, quería culpar a alguien y luego estaba triste, muy triste. Todos los sueños y proyectos se habían detenido allí, en ese momento, en ese momento vacío. Podría escribir páginas sobre esto o quizá no... la sensación es tan abrumadora. Y luego pensé en sus padres... y ahora Debbi Reynolds se me viene a la mente. Ciertamente nos podemos quedar atascados en el tiempo, nuestra vida no será más como lo sabemos sin respuestas y sin motivación para hacer nada. No es hasta que aceptamos los hechos, que podemos empezar a sanar y aceptar la horrible realidad en la que realmente podemos pasar. La aceptación es la última etapa del duelo y cómo llegamos allí es lo que determinará si estamos listos para continuar nuestro viaje sin la persona que perdimos. No hay una buena manera de sufrir y todos lo hacemos de manera diferente, por lo que es importante ser paciente y abierto cuando lidiamos con situaciones como esta y tenemos que dar apoyo a un desamparado. Cuanto mejor es nuestra comprensión de la pena es, cómo se cura y cómo podemos estar allí para los desamparados, mejor seremos capaces de ayudarlos y ayudarnos a nosotros mismos. Vampire Legends: The Collectors, by Kamee Schrope, is a vampire tale like no other. The brilliant author has created a beautiful piece of work. Vampire fantasy has been with us for a very long time now. This is not the first book dealing with them, nor will it be the last one, but one thing is for sure; it will be a cherished piece of work for years to come. It has proven to be the best vampire book yet! Kamee Shrope came up with such an amazing concept that no one has done. The Collectors are a group within a group that have visions of the vampire legends in order to track them down before they transform and help them through the process. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it hooked me from the Prologue to the end, and I just could not put it aside. It has a great new way to look at this genre. Kamee took a story that has been done so many times and turned it into a completely different scene. I loved the characters. What I liked most about Vampire Legends is the characterization. It avoids the old cliché about all vampires being evil monsters. Kamee treats all her characters as individuals whether they are vampires or human. I also very much like the way the romance is portrayed, Chance, the vampire romantic hero, is a whole man who is fully capable in the realms of thought, emotion and action. He can appear to be like a playful child in one moment, a wise advisor in the next moment, and a strong protector soon after that. There is so much excitement and suspense as there is a legend that was not supposed to be and the good and bad sides are looking for her, so it is a race in a way. The love story behind the whole thing is very well done! The characters are so real with their individuality and personalities that you really feel connected to them. It was a world that I did not want to end! I am so glad it is a series so that I have that much more time in this amazing world she has created that I cannot wait for the sequel. There are originally 2 brothers who read a passage from the book called The Book of Truth, and then they become vampire. After some time, they end up splitting to go their own ways and in their own path, 1 becomes good while 1 becomes evil. They then become the collectors and it becomes a race to reach the humans that will become vampires before the other one does. Now even though most vampires are humans that are born to become vampires, there are vampires that are turned other ways. The five Legends go about helping the good brother, while the bad brother forms a coven of his own and pits himself against his brother and the humans. Then a child is born, and only one collector has premonition

La fantasía del vampiro ha estado con nosotros por largo tiempo. For the last 50 years Las Vegas has hosted the Consumer Electronics Show or CES. I was fortunate enough to attend the show this year in order to keep the pulse on new technology in the education space. Even though there have been huge strides in the development of technology, there has not been a technological development to revolutionize education. There were several different technologies of particular interest at the show this year.

The only product that I saw was one called Square Panda, also the name of the company. Square Panda is a specially designed electronic playset that can recognize words up to 8 letters in length and wirelessly links to iPads through Bluetooth. The product also includes 45 child-safe Smart Letters that your child can place in the tray to build words and actually hear the sounds of the letters and words as they interact with the phonics-based games. Their free cloud database stores pictures and names of your child’s family, friends, and pets for customization of your child’s learning experience. The benefit of this product is that it adds a third dimension that other technology learning products do not, the tactile sense of drawing the shapes of letters which mimics the act of writing but at a lower skill level.

This product is fantastic for children who cannot write yet but want to get a head start in phonics and writing. I am currently in talks with the manufacturer to test some in my tutoring centers. This product is designed a hub for a smart home, meaning that it connects with the wi-fi network in the home and is able to control any smart devices hooked to the network such as a smart thermostat or security system. I was fortunate in that Sky Link (www.skylinkhome. com) out of Ontario, Canada was interested enough in the application of smart products in education that they gave me an Echo dot (a small version) to test in my tutoring center and develop ways to use it to help the student’s education experience. In next month’s article, I will review other products and give an update on what I have developed in regards to use of this product.

Chances are you’ve heard of virtual and augmented realities. In fact, VR and AR came in at number one in Forbes’ top 10 list of technology trends for 2016 . Augmented reality found its stride in July when more than 15 million people per day played Niantic’s mobile game Pokémon GO , and sales of the top four VR headset devices were forecasted to reach nearly $11 million last year . Despite the recent surge in popularity, VR and AR are not new concepts. Augmented reality gaming and products like Google Cardboard may seem like futuristic inventions, but the technology and concept for virtual and augmented realities have been around for decades. Early iterations of today’s head mounted devices were created in the late 1980s and the public first had access to virtual reality gaming in 1991 . Virtual and augmented reality has a great deal of yet-unreached potential but has been slow to materialize, much like another groundbreaking technological advancement — the World Wide Web. Those old enough to remember the inception of the Web in the early 1990s know many people were skeptical that it would ever evolve into the tech staple it is today. The early days of Mosiac and Netscape seemed revolutionary at the time, but the Web’s potential never fully materialized until nearly a decade later. Only 16 million people, less than one percent of the world’s population, used the internet in 1995; that number increased to more than 500 million users by 2000 and reached three billion last year . It appears that the evolution of virtual and augmented realities may be following a similar pattern to its predecessor, which means the future of these devices could be even brighter than we imagine. If you’re not a tech geek like me, than you most likely haven’t experienced higher-end VR and AR devices like the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. Those devices offer higher quality graphics and a more immersive experience but are often only available at expos and are expensive, whereas their counterparts like the Samsung VR and Google Cardboard are easier to attain. Lower-end devices still offer a glimpse into virtual and augmented realities, but it is hard to fully grasp the future potential without demoing higher-end devices that allow you to interact with your environment in a virtual threedimensional space . Virtual and augmented realities are slowly becoming more accessible with the introduction of affordable headsets for smartphone and gaming devices. As the technology advances, we don’t fully know when this technology will finally take off. However, the growth of the web may provide some clues. Similar to the internet’s rapid evolution when computers were

Samsung, for example, has begun to include its VR devices with its flagship phones and Google Cardboard provides consumers an affordable introduction to VR devices. This is just a small slice of the endless opportunities this technology offers. The next decade of growth looks especially bright. Soon, we may see immersion of VR and AR into the classroom to enhance the student learning experience or into companies to connect the world on an even closer level. These devices allow us the opportunity for nursing students to study organs by dissecting a virtual human body, or for businesses to interact with clients face-to-face in a virtual space from across the globe. I am extremely excited about the practical future applications of VR and AR in education, but I understand that patience will be key. Much like how early web advancements shifted from compatibility and process to infrastructure and human connection, advancements to VR and AR should shift from trendy tech like video games and apps to sectors like education and business where the potential can be more fully realized. Quality and capability advancements are still a few years away, but I believe we have much to look forward to if VR and AR follow a similar evolution path to the web.

Chances are you’ve heard of virtual and augmented reality — colloquially known as VR and AR. If not, you will soon. VR and AR devices were named Forbes’ top tech trend for 2016 . With easy access to AR apps and companies like HTC and Samsung producing affordable VR devices, it may appear that we’ve reached the golden age of this technology, but I believe this is just the beginning. Virtual reality devices, which provide consumers a digital experience that mimics the real world, were some of the highest-grossing tech in 2016, with sales of the top four brands reaching nearly $11 million . Augmented reality, or real-world environments that are augmented by computergenerated sensory inputs, found its stride in July with the mobile game Pokémon GO . Higher-end models that provide a more immersive experience, like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, offer a glimpse of what the future holds, but breakthroughs in technology and greater access to these devices may very well be accelerating their evolution. For years, we’ve salivated over the potential of virtual and augmented reality — a potential that has yet to be full realized. We’ve dreamed of operating Tony Stark’s floating virtual computer screen from the Iron Man movies or receiving hologram video messages projected in the air like in the Star Wars films. Hollywood has the ability to manipulate technology beyond its current capabilities, but some of the “futuristic” technology we see in movies may not be closer than we think. Holograms and virtual computer screens are probably still about a decade away from being fully realized and available to consumers, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have access to tech that is pretty similar. The Microsoft HoloLens, an augmented reality headset device, enables users to project computer generated graphics that interact with the real world. I’ve tested the RoboRaid app, which uses spatial mapping to turn your room into a virtual battlefield to fight flying robots that interact with real world objects like walls, desks and people . The current list of apps for the HoloLens is limited now, but Microsoft is working with numerous partners to develop mixed reality apps for work, play and education. The groundbreaking technology the HoloLens currently offers paired with its future potential is what convinced me to add it to our inaugural technology showcases at the RedFlint Experience Center in downtown Las Vegas. RedFlint, sparked by University of Phoenix, is an incubator, accelerator and shared thinking space that offers access to the latest and greatest technology. We hope that companies, entrepreneurs and tech-curious people in Las Vegas will stop by the center to demo the HoloLens, HTC Vive, Double Robotics telepresence robots and other hands-on showcase technology. I believe the more people can experience this burgeoning technology, the more progress we can make,

VR and AR have the ability to take education and business to yet-unreached heights. For now, we must continue to innovate so that the future of virtual and augmented realities can reach the level we see in movies and science fiction. Current technology, like the HoloLens and HTC Vive, provide a solid foundation for growth and a hope for the future, but it is on us to make our dreams a reality. I believe we will experience a future where students learn and interact in a virtual space and consumers experience life like never before. That current landscape of VR and AR is promising and I think it’s just getting started .

The Super Bowl is coming up soon. Chances are you’ll be watching it on a TV, possibly along with a bunch of other people. Here’s how to get the most out of the biggest TV viewing experience of the year.

Are you and your TV ready for Super Bowl 51 on February 5? If you’re not among the 72,000-odd lucky fans who get to watch the game in person at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, you’ll probably be among the 110 million-plus people watching it on a TV. Here’s how to make that TV look its best for the biggest game of the year.

THE BIG PLAY The bigger the TV, the better. Football is presented primarily in a press box view, with a lot of the field visible at once, studded with all-too-tiny players. More so than most TV programs, it’s best suited to larger screens. You’ll get a better experience watching on as large a TV as you have available. It’s not too late to buy one, and prices are at their lowest points of the year. But maybe you’re perfectly happy with your current TV. If it’s smaller, you can get a big screen effect “for free” by sitting closer. High-def TVs and 4K TVs usually look great even from very close distances, so it might be worthwhile to move your seat closer to the TV for the game. That is, if doing so won’t obscure the screen for your friends. CONNECT ON THE HDMI PASS FOR 720P YARDS. The first thing you want to do is make sure the TV is set up correctly. If you have a high-definition cable or satellite box, make sure it’s connected via HDMI. Fox is handling the broadcast this year, which will be in 720p resolution. Generally, you’ll get the best results if you set your box to output either 720p resolution of “native” resolution, which allows your 1080p or 4K TV, not the box, to handle the conversion. (Unfortunately, there’s no 4K broadcast of the game). You’ll also want to make sure you’re tuned to the high-def versions of the broadcast. Most cable and satellite providers in the US carry both HD and standard-definition channels, and provided you have a compatible TV, HD will look much better. CALL THE AUDIBLE You should also get your audio set up correctly. If you’re using the TV speakers for audio, set your box to output stereo as opposed to 5.1 surround sound (Dolby Digital). But hopefully

you’re using an external audio system or sound bar, which can not only deliver real or simulated surround sound (perfect for that great crowd noise) but also much better dialogue. No matter what you use to listen to the game, try playing around with the sound controls. Many TVs and external sound systems have a multiband equalizer that lets you decrease certain frequencies independently of others, quieting those sounds you don’t want to hear. If your equipment doesn’t have an equalizer, try experimenting with a sound mode or even the basic bass and treble controls. And if you happen to be listening to Fox’s 5.1-channel surround-sound broadcast on a surround system, you can turn down the center channel to minimize the dialogue from the announcers. Conversely, if you’d rather hear them over the crowd, turn down the other speakers (left, right and surround) and turn up the center. TOSS A BRIGHT SPIRAL At CNET, we calibrate the picture settings of every TV we review to get the best picture quality. If you happen to own one of the TVs we’ve reviewed, you can actually try our calibrated settings yourself. Of course, our calibrations happen in a dark room, and your room might be brighter, especially if you’re on the west coast where kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. If the picture seems too dim, try increasing the backlight control, which boosts the power of the illumination (typically LEDs) behind the LCD screen. If you have a plasma or OLED TV, try increasing Contrast or Cell Light or OLED Light control instead. Also, be sure to disable any room lighting sensors, automatic brightness controls or energy-saver controls. GET A GREEN GRIDIRON During our calibrations, we attempt to get the most accurate color possible. For football, the most common color you’ll see is the green of the field. The human eye is very sensitive to green, and you can usually tell if grass looks too brownish or dull, or too yellowish or vibrant. When you’re watching football, you want as natural and accurate a color green as possible. One of the best ways to assure accurate colors, including green, is to engage the Movie or Cinema preset. It sounds counterintuitive, but Movie usually provides a more accurate color green than Sports or other picture modes. Those are often punched-up and oversaturated-looking, with greens that are much more intense than in real life. If you like the punchy look, on the other hand, maybe you’ll prefer one of those modes to a more accurate one. On some TVs, unfortunately, Movie will look too dark, even if you turn up the Backlight or Contrast all the way. If that’s the case, choose a brighter picture mode and look for a control called “color space” or something similar. There, you’ll want to choose the “HD” or “Auto” or “Rec 709” setting, not the “Native” setting. You may also be able to get the grass looking more natural by decreasing the color control.

DON’T MUFF THE EXTRA POINT!

If you won’t be making the trek to Houston or buying a new TV, at least you now have some ideas for getting your TV and home theater into prime shape for kickoff. Now feel free to redecorate your man cave in Falcons red or Patriots red, white and blue, invite your buddies over and scream at the screen, knowing it looks its best.

Si te gusta ese aspecto más vibrante, sin embargo, quizá prefieras esas modalidades a una más natural. Desgraciadamente, en algunos televisores el modo Cine se ve muy oscuro incluso si aumentas la retroiluminación o el contraste. Si ese es el caso, elige el modo de imagen más brillante y busca un control llamado “espacio de color” o algo así. Ahí, elige la configuración “HD”, “Auto” o “Rec 709”, no la “Nativa” (Native). Podrías también lograr un aspecto más natural del pasto si bajas el nivel del control de color. Listos Si no vas a viajar hasta Houston o comprar un televisor nuevo, al menos ahora tienes algunas ideas para que tu televisor o sistema de cine en casa estén en perfecto estado antes del inicio del partido. SF 49ers 2016 season ends in turmoil By~Por: Ronbo Sports

The 49ers season should have been shot and killed in week 8 to put all of us who care out of our misery. 2016 will go down as one of the worst seasons in 49ers history with player personnel going down to injury, after injury at an outrageous rate. However, if you were to ask 49ers fans all over the world if they had known they would be rewarded for their pain, and suffering at the end of the 2016 season by witnessing the dismissal of Trent Baalke it may have been worth it. The evil has been removed. Trent Baalke has finally been dismissed. The fan base is now healing like an outpatient who had a tumor removed. I could go on with these analogies for hours but the anger aside it’s a wonderful time within the ranks of the 49ers fan base as we now look towards a future that holds promise. I still believe that the dismissal of head coach Chip Kelly was misjudged. Chip Kelly bravely went into a rebuilding situation that was as big a task as it was mainly because of Trent Baalke’s lack of fortifying the roster with better player personnel as he should have. There was no way Kelly was going to make a winner out of that 49ers team within one season. The fan base is split over the decision of firing Kelly with the bigger percentage appreciating Kelly’s exit, but many remain curious as to how he would have done with a stronger roster. Jed York with his annual address in a failed attempt, tried to assure everyone that he has the situation under control as the 49ers move forward to replace both the general manager position, as well as the head coaching position. The candidates so far have been all familiar famous names, as York’s intentions are to pursue from the ranks of the NFL’s biggest winning teams of (2016) like the Patriots, Redskins, Packers, Seahawks, and others. The 49ers objective is to bring a winning culture back to Levi’s Stadium. This is a concept that has been sorely missed for the past 3years, and strangely enough since the 49ers first entered their new home in Santa Clara. The search for the next 49ers leaders is approaching a week long. It is speculated that a general manager could be chosen within the next few days to be followed by the appointment of a head coach shortly thereafter.

So we’ve reached the half way point of the Hockey season. Predictions for the playoffs? Teams are aligning themselves, and have had a chance to “match-up” with each other thus far. We’re all pretty confident that our Sharks are going to make the playoffs, and hold a pretty good spot in terms of how they finish. Very important how you finish, and the spot you end up, as Home ice advantage becomes very important to the teams. Our take is that the kings and the Sharks will both finish strong within their perspective division. The Anaheim Ducks will falter yet again. They play very well during the season, but they rely to heavy on their “do it all line” as they have become quite known throughout the league. This is Anaheim’s fourth line. By Far the best fourth line in the NHL, but won’t be enough to get them done. If the rankings were to be taken today, you would have to have Columbus as the #1 team in the NHL. They are playing incredible hockey right now. But, our boys here in San Jose are continuing to grind it out, and will make a very good showing in the playoffs. A lot of hockey left though. It’s going to be a tight race all the way down. 7-points separate the first five teams in the standings, with our Sharks a top of the leader board. Brent Burns is having a career year, as he leads the Sharks in points, just above the Captain Joe Pavelski. Personally, and I know I speak for a lot of the San Jose Fans; I would love to see Patrick Marleau Hoist the Cup. If our boys can stay healthy, we have another very good chance to get to the final show. Stay tuned, as we head to the final stretch of the season, and teams make their final move(s) to get into the playoffs. In Hockey, it really doesn’t make too much of a factor if you’re in that final spot, or a top of the playoff spot. When you get into the playoffs, the “gloves are off”, and its desperation hockey non-stop. Are the playoffs fun to watch? You betcha. San Jose is yet again, that team to watch, who brings their Lunch pail to work, and simply gets it done.
