Letter to Our Readers

As the holiday season approaches, the giant Asian factories kick into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods to buy. This year, let’s try something different! It’s time to think outside the box. Read this issue’s main editorial feature for some ideas on practical gift giving. Also, for your review, our writers have compiled a listing of venues hosting 2016 New Year’s Eve Parties. There’s a new sports bar in town! The Gullace family has brought their “reinvented” family-oriented sports bar theme to Brielle with the opening of the Brielle Ale House Sports Bar and Grille. This sports bar comes on the heels of the opening of the Asbury Ale House Sports Bar & Grille in Asbury Park a year ago. Learn more in this month’s Restaurant Profile feature. Next, make way for Amber Moon. This rising cover band made its debut on the New Jersey music scene in 2015. Even though it’s only been a little over a year since conception, the band has been steadily “rockin” its way throughout New Jersey. The band is made up of seasoned musicians that bring expertise, talent, and passion to every show. Take a moment to read more j n in this issue’s Band njProfile. E S has multiple E N Ubartender, She’s a veteran E N U E S degrees studying psychiatric rehabilitation and clinical mental health counseling, and is an expert skier! Noelle Derhay j has tended bar at River Rock in Brick, n for six years. Read all nj UES NMixologist-of-the-Month about Noelle inEour E N UES feature.

The holidays are fast approaching and our contributing writer “Bill The Brewer” is looking forward to one of his favorite things during the holiday season …. Christmas Ale. Whether you’re spending time with family, finishing you’re holiday shopping or just fighting the crowds, the one thing you’re going to need is a beer, suggests Bill. Not just any beer, you’re going to need a beer with a little something extra. A well made Christmas Ale can certainly bring the yuletide cheer. Check out this issue’s All That’s Beer feature. On the comic side, Joey Massaro is a Jersey Shore guy who has performed in many venues and has been working at his craft for about 5 years professionally and over 20 years as an amateur, assuming 4th grade counts. His comedy comes from, “his crazy family, crazy women I date…” and real life situations. A couple of his top comedians are Colin Quinn and Richard Pryor and he is a huge fan of 8 Mile. Read more in this month’s Comic Relief feature. As 2016 is coming to an end, we at Venues NJ wish to thank all our readers and advertisers who have cheered us on during the past year. We wish you all a happy, safe & healthy holiday season and look forward to see you all during the coming New Year. Thank you.

BY CLARE MARIE CELANO The Gullace family has brought their “reinvented” family-oriented sports bar theme to Brielle with the opening of the Brielle Ale House Sports Bar and Grille. This sports bar comes on the heels of the opening of the Asbury Ale House Sports Bar & Grille in Asbury Park, which opened in October, 2015, and joins the several other Gullace family-ownedand-operated eateries along the Jersey Shore. According to Matt Gullace, who co-owns the family-owned and operated Brielle Ale House and Asbury Ale House, with his brothers Frank Jr., and Chris, Brielle Ale House opened in November. Gullace said his family, “took the sports bar theme and created a family atmosphere with good quality comfort food at an affordable price, along with games, entertainment and specials, 7 days a week. The sports bar features games for kids and adults, such as Trivia, speed bingo and arcades. It also offers Happy Hour Monday through Friday and DJs and bands on Friday and Saturday nights. “We take pride in getting to know our customers,” Gullace said. “And we maintain our relationships with them. We have a great community here in Brielle. We are bringing residents here a local sports bar to come to.” Gullace grew up in the restaurant industry with his dad, Frank Sr. who owned and operated bars in Jersey City for over 40 years. Matt’s brother Frank Gullace Jr. owns the Shore House Bar & Grill, Point Pleasant along with his father. Matt and Chris Gullace also became a part of the business. “Sports bars were very popular when my dad was young in the 1970s and 80s,” Gullace said. “Then clubs became popular and sports bars were put on the back burner. We have reinvented the sports bar theme with a family oriented place. Our idea worked in Asbury Park, so we opened the ale house in Brielle. We are hoping to open more, as many as we

can, for as long as we can.” Gullace is also opening two stands in Ocean Grove, Burgers and Bites on the Boards and Breakfast on the Boards, as well as BYO Pasta and Pizza, in Brick. Frank is opening Blended, a smoothie shop in Point Pleasant. Brielle Ale House offers a horseshoe bar with 60 draft beers, a game room in the back, a back bar with Shot Wheel, a back dining room and dart room. There are 40 televisions for your viewing pleasure. The business also provides two free shuttles for customer safety from 7 p.m. through 2 a.m. “We don’t want people drinking and driving,” he said. Enjoy hearty dishes here, including Mac & Cheese appetizers, hand breaded and fried with Srirachi Aioli. Try the Jersey Fries, Trenton pork roll strips deep fried served with Srirachi ketchup and cheese sauce. Burgers are on tap, including the favorite Ale House Burger, with ale house sauce, cheddar, fried shallots and bacon, or So-Cal Burger with avocado, Srirchai Aioli and roasted tomatoes. Indulge in entrees such as the signature Drunken Chicken entrée made with homemade vodka sauce, melted mozzarella and penne pasta. For a change of pace, try Chicken and Waffles, southern fried chicken breast with maple infused waffles, creamy chicken gravy and maple bacon drizzle, served with a side of mashed sweet potatoes. Sandwiches and wraps are plentiful here, including the popular Po’ Boy Wrap with Summer Shandy beer battered shrimp, Cajun slaw and roasted red pepper remoulade. Also on tap is a 15 percent discount at Brielle Ale House for local employees, including firefighters and police. Happy Hour takes place Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with $2 domestic drafts, $3 wine by the glass and $4 mixed drinks. Stop in for lunch with a $12 lunch combo special

Sundays (from 7 p.m. to close) is Industry Night. Bartenders will have details. The ale house features VIP membership. For a $150 membership patrons receive a personal 23-ounce beer mug that will be stored a locker. That mug gets you 23 ounces of beer for the price of 16 ounces. And, draft beers are on the house for you all day and night on your birthday. Make way for Amber Moon. This rising cover band made its debut on the New Jersey music scene in 2015, performing songs primarily from the rock genre. Even though it’s only been a little over a year since conception, the band has been steadily “rockin” its way throughout New Jersey. The band is made up of seasoned musicians that bring expertise, talent, and passion to every show. First, let’s introduce the members of Amber Moon and get a glimpse of their capabilities. This fourmember band is proud to call Central Jersey their home. Lead singer and keyboardist, Karen Iko has been involved in music in many ways since she was young and it has remained a big part of her life through today. She has written and recorded several songs that have attained radio airplay. Karen has been singing lead and playing keyboards on the New Jersey cover band circuit for many years. She and Amber Moon are all about playing live with power and energy as well as heart and soul. Guitarist and vocalist Fred Nelson picked up the guitar at age 14 and has performed throughout the New York and New Jersey in both original and cover bands. Fred is eager to get in front of live audiences with Amber Moon to create the high energy stage show and a captivating sound as he has done so many times in the colorful past history of his musical career. Bassist and vocalist Richard Gray is a formally trained professional bassist and had performed with many bands throughout his career. Rich is most definitely known for his aggressive style and his tone and style are hard to miss. Percussionist and vocalist George Smith has experience creating, recording and performing 12

original music, as well as, working with many other cover bands. “I’m excited about Amber Moon! This line-up rocks. We’re a dynamic 4-piece band that really covers classic rock with an edge! Come out and hear us!” encourages George. Next, let’s look at the rise of Amber Moon. Karen and George met over 6 years ago and began performing together, but it wasn’t until 2015 that the two formed the new band that would later become Amber Moon. It was later that year that Fred, who had known and performed with Rich for over thirty years, replaced the previous guitarist and the group was renamed Amber Moon. Together, the members discussed dozens of possible band names and combinations to which they finally agreed that Amber Moon would be it. “It is a great name that has a good feel with many good marketing qualities.” They were off and running. When asked about their most memorable experience, George says, “our first gig together was memorable, but it’s always the very last one we play that stands out because we rock it better and better every time out there.” The band’s motto is “We Cover Rock Music with an Edge”. To illustrate, Amber Moon performs rock-n-roll cover songs from a vast variety of artists. According to George, it ranges from “a rockin’ version of, These Boots Were Made for Walking, to Ozzie’s, Cray Train, Queen’s, Tie Your Mother Down, and Led Zeppelin’s, Ocean and Houses of the Holy. Plus, various songs by The Pretenders, Pat Benetar, Guns and Roses, Alice in Chains, The Doors, Lita Ford, Pink, Journey, Billy Idol and so many more. “We only play songs that we love to play and perform. We try to stay away from the “everyone plays that” syndrome.”, says George. “We rock it for the audience and ourselves! If it doesn’t move and groove us, we don’t play it.” My To Advertise Call 732.995.1714

personal favorite is Amber Moon’s version of Huey Lewis’ song “Working for a Living”. According to George, what the band wants from its audience is “to feel like they were entertained and of course, to say that we’re good musicians.” As for the band’s musical influences, George states, “the 4 of us are very experienced musicians with many different influences. Fred names Ted Nugent and Slash, Rich has Billy Squire and Jack Casady, Karen named Chrissy Hynde and Pretenders as well as the Moody Blues. George’s personal influences are John Bonham and Mike Portnoy. George has a message for all Venues NJ readers: “Just come out to see us, hear us, enjoy us and get in to the music!” Lastly, this is where you get the opportunity to discover Amber Moon for yourself. The band’s calendar is constantly expanding. Their upcoming shows include destinations like Moby Dick’s Restaurant and Lounge in Sewaren, Ryan’s Pub in Monroe, the General Saloon in Old Bridge, and Rocky’s Bar and Grill in Rahway. Keep a look out for more performances at venues that they have performed at in the past, like the Ivy Stone in Iselin, Kerwin’s Tavern in Middlesex, Grillestone in Scotch Plains, Molly Maguire’s in Clark, and Woody’s Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale. You can find them on Facebook at Facebook. com/TheAmberMoonBand visit their website at www.ambermoonband. com The band also performs private events; contact George Smith 732-598-0499 or at Email: Info@ AmberMoonBand.com

Also, Dean Stockwell, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart among others. n o s a e S e h T ‘Tis A s the holiday season approaches, the giant Asian factories kick into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods to buy This year, let’s try something different! This year, it’s time to think outside the box. With a little ingenuity, you can give gifts that show some extra thought and consideration. Some suggestions … Practical Gift Giving Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in foreign produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages, particularly those who are thinking about health improvement. Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a foreign made flat-screen? Instead, perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fanc y eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn’t about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with 18

their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings to local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands. And, don’t forget the mailman, newspaper delivery person, trash guy or babysitter. Gifts That Keep On Giving If you’re feeling a bit more generous, but still wish to give gifts that have a little more “staying power” to them, think about the wide variety of Gift of the Month Clubs that are available for those gifts that provide a lasting impression.

approach, or even achieve, perfection. This singular show, about an unorthodox family grappling with the complexities of, well, just being a family has been restored to life, some 25 years after it was first produced, with such vitality that it feels as fresh and startling as it did back in 1992. The achievement seems almost miraculous, because in the intervening years, America has gone through cultural changes that might, in theory, have made the show seem a relic. The musical, which opened this past September at the Walter Kerr Theater in a Lincoln Center Theater production, directed by Mr. Lapine, follows the topsyturvy fortunes of a family of four, which eventually grows to five and maybe more. At its center is the confused heart of Marvin, a gay man in 1979 who introduces us in an early sequence to his lover,

Whizzer, and his ex-wife, Trina, along with Marvin and Trina’s precociously smart son, the 10-year-old Jason. Although no one seems wholly at ease, they Wcontinued A Y have to maintain equilibrium, to the point of still sharing meals together. But even in the early scenes, we see fractures. Marvin is possessive, critical, irked by the younger, boyishly handsome Whizzer’s lack of enthusiasm for monogamy. Marvin and the other principal characters also point fingers at one another, trying to settle on the source of their dissatisfaction. Marvin and Whizzer can’t even agree on how long they’ve been together. Marvin is too demanding and uptight, thinks Whizzer and Trina. Marvin doesn’t think he’s necessarily the problem, and urges Trina to see his longtime psychiatrist, Mendel who complicates matters by becoming almost instantly smitten with her. Young Jason sees his father as “morbid and dissatisfied” and his emotional allegiance is mainly to his mother, at first. Trying

nj

ENUES

to break through this isolation, Marvin and Trina urge Jason to start seeing Mendel, too. He agrees to it, but only after consulting with Whizzer. “Falsettos” is a hard show to stop, so antic and frantic are the characters as they ricochet through their complicated lives. The tone of “Falsettos” markedly changes in the second act, which takes place in 1981. By this time, Trina and Mendel have married, and Marvin and Whizzer have broken up. Whizzer comes down with a mysterious illness, and soon finds himself in the hospital. (I don’t need to tell you what the illness is.) But now, despite their difficulties, Whizzer and Marvin have reunited, and the family has expanded to virtually include Dr. Charlotte and her lover, the caterer Cordelia, who are folded into the embrace of the makeshift family we have seen assembling. American families come in all shapes and

s i z e s . “Falsettos” is eerily prescient in its presentation of one such family, well before its time. The plague of AIDS no longer claims lives in the numbers it did in the 1980s. And definitions of masculinity, a sharp undercurrent in the show, have expanded considerably. “Falsettos” never feels like a singing time capsule. Its fundamental subject is that mysterious, maddening, uplifting, life-complicating emotion we refer to as love, which hasn’t changed in 25 years — or, for that matter, many more than that. “Love is blind,” the characters sing early on. “Love can tell a million stories. Love’s unkind, spiteful in a million ways.” By the conclusion of this exceptional production, we feel the dizzying sense of having heard a bounty of such stories, and yet they have been so tightly knit together that they feel like one uninterrupted song.

nj Joey Massaro is a Jersey Shore guy S U N E who has performed in manyEvenues and has been working at his craft for about 5 years professionally and over 20 years as an amateur, assuming 4th grade counts. His comedy comes from, “his crazy family, crazy women I date…” and real life situations. A couple of his top comedians are Colin Quinn and Richard Pryor and he is a huge fan of 8 Mile.

I thought to myself if I don’t pee my pants I should be okay. I ended up doing pretty well compared to Millie Vanilli and the girl who almost beheaded Sister Angelina.

South Carolina is booming because of what we started at Red Door.

V-NJ: How long have you been doing this?

JM: Stress Factory, the Big Ten show on Tuesday December 13th

JM: I’m going on five years of doing stand-up comedy and I’m a regular at various open mics around the Jersey area to practice new material.

Venues-NJ:You’re a Jersey kid, born and raised. Where’d you grow up and how did this ride to stand up comedian start out for you?

V-NJ: Is this your only job or do have something else you do?

V-NJ: I know your Italian family is a large part of your comedy. Did you perform for them when you were a kid, ala Billy Crystal, who did exactly that? JM: I never performed in front of my family when I was a kid. I feel like it would be a hostile crowd. They would all be talking over each other and it would turn into a real s*** show. V-NJ: Take us back to the first time you tried stand-up. Where was it and explain the feelings you went through leading up to it and during your act. JM: The first time I did stand up was when I was in 4th grade at a school talent show. It was in front of the whole school so there were close to two hundred people there. I remember watching kids 26

Joey Messaro: I grew up on the mean streets of West Long Branch. At the end of my street there was a synagogue and I was the only non Jewish kid on my street which doesn’t sound bad but when you’re trying to be a comedian that’s a lot like 8 Mile. I also grew up with a bunch of rag tag culturally mixed group of degenerates who were always trashing each other and trying to get each other to laugh. That’s where I think I get my humor from.

V-NJ: What’s your schedule look like for the next couple of months? What do you have happening up here; in Jersey and NYC? Also, where can we find some info on you, do you have a website?

On Facebook - Joey Massaro On Instagram @joegirth And I have a website launching in January with skits and show dates, www.JoeyMassaro. com

JM: I’m actually in the process of moving to Los Angeles to do comedy full time. V-NJ: Oh yeah, largest, smallest and best venues where you’ve performed? JM: When I was in college I opened up for TJ Miller at the Koger Center (Columbia, South Carolina, seating 2,500) in front of hundreds of people. It was quite a rush and TJ was a pretty cool dude. The smallest show I ever did was in someone’s apartment for 12 people. To be honest it felt more like an AA meeting then a comedy show. The best venue would have to be the Red Door Tavern, also in Columbia South Carolina. It was this dive bar with a stage where we did shows every Friday. Most of the people who went there definitely belonged in AA. The crowds were always into the shows. Even though that place closed down the comedy scene in Columbia To Advertise Call 732.995.1714

ESTORE… HELP WA It’s the end-of-year holiday season. Time to get together with friends and family to celebrate the happenings of the past year and to look forward to the events of the coming year. This is truly a time for fun and social activities. But, it can easily turn into a nightmare. While celebration and “good cheer” are certainly part of the end of year activities, a call for personally responsibility is a must. As we all realize, it is too easy to overdo when at a party and celebrate to excess. We all must remember Rule # 1: DON’T DRINK & DRIVE.

As a consumer or “party go-er” this is paramount, not only this time of year, but always. If you plan to party to excess, or think you might, plan ahead … arrange in advance for a designated driver, a taxi or today’s most popular choice, Uber.

cane Sandy Notificat As a proprietor or owner of a venue where a holiday party is taking place, you too have both a personal and business responsibility. Make certain your staff (both bartenders & servers) are trained and understand the importance of recognizing a patron who may have been over-served or “had too much already.” Your business might depend on it!

According to the NHTSA, over 1.5 million people are arrested annually in the U.S. for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The results of such arrests and convictions can cause severe financial hardships including loss of license, legal costs, serious fines, insurance surcharges, possible loss of a job and even jail time. All this could cost you up to $15,000 - $20,000. So do not take it lightly. It’s not a laughing matter!
