Letter to Our Readers

It’s that time of year again! The 2016 – 2017 regular football season begins this month. After a full week of work, we all look forward to going to a favorite sports bar to cheer on our favorite teams. What we don’t need is some loud mouth jackass disturbing our leisure time. Our writers have compiled a list of “DON’T’s” that we hope will lead to a more enjoyable time. See our main editorial feature in this issue for more. Looking for a band that can keep you entertained all night long? The Ruckus is a group that has made a name for itself with a playlist that includes virtually every genre. While only playing together for just a couple of years, this band has exploded in popularity within the Central Jersey area …. and beyond. Read more about The Ruckus in this month’s Band Profile. Experience, professionalism and a great personality! Ifnthat’s j what you look njfor in a bartender to serve S you, look no E U N E E N U E Sfurther. If you’re in the area, stop in to the Poole Ave. bar in Hazlet and say hello to Aimee Remeika. She’s been nj njbartending for almost S 20 years will N UatEhome as sheandserves E N U E Smake you feelEright

your libation. Learn more about Aimee, our Mixologist-of-the-Month. With the explosive popularity in craft beers and their sales, more and more people have shown interest in the art of making their own beer. But, just how do you make beer? Our contributor, “Bill The Brewer” explains that it’s as simple a cooking, using a basic recipe. Take a minute to read Bill’s feature All That’s Beer. I think you’ll enjoy it. Do you remember “Chi Chi” in the movie Scarface? This Cuban actor (and comedian) has been performing for decades. His stand up acts are always receiving top notch reviews, “hilarious”, “makes my stomach hurt from laughing so much”, etc. Turn to this issue’s Comic Relief for a few laughs. Okay, now get out, have a good meal, some refreshing beverages and support some good local musicians. Enjoy.

he Ruckus has only been playing shows together for a couple of years, though the connections within the band are a lot older. They are made up of Dave Stefanic on vocals, Ralph Mercuro on guitar, Paul Velez on bass and Roman Dino on drums. Stefanic and Mercuro had been in a band together prior to forming the Ruckus and when his long-time friend Dino became available they decided to play together just for fun. When Mercuro’s cousin Velez entered the mix they knew they had something special and decided to form The Ruckus.

By including nearly every genre, it guarantees if one patron doesn’t like a particular song or style, one he or she does enjoy is coming up quickly. Dino owns the sampler that made it possible to add another dimension to their repertoire, adding horns and keyboard to the background whenever it is called for. “It’s almost like having a fifth band member in a way,” describes Velez. By using the sampler and adding a wider variety on genres than most, The Ruckus can play for the whole crowd. Even if they are taken out of their comfort zone as musicians, if it’s what the crowd wants to hear, they’ll play it.

Keeping fans happy means good business for the bar, which means another trip back. “You can be the best band in the world, but if people aren’t filling that register up the venue is not going to invite you back,” says Velez. “We try to make sure that everybody is involved, whether it’s the band, the establishment or the people that are coming to is work and the band’s see us,” he adds. “Everybody’s performances have paid involved and everybody’s having off, as they are booked a good time.” well into next year with one to two shows every week. isit TheRuckusNJ. com for music samples, heir playlist is so playlist and schedule, extensive; they can play and give the band a like at 50 songs four nights in a fa c e b o o k . c o m / t h e r u ck u s n j . row and never perform the same one twice. They can be seen at Woody’s Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale, but you can also catch them regularly at Jenk’s Club in Pt Pleasant, River Rock in Brick, Blue Rock Café in Keyport and Ryan’s Pub in Monroe Township. Mercuro has been the one hitting the pavement after work looking for bookings and when he finds an opening they do not disappoint. “Every place that we’ve been to by the end of the night they’re opening up the book and saying how about again next month,” says Mercuro.

r e e B by Bill “The Brewer”

“How Do You Make Beer?” In the past few days, I’ve been asked more than a dozen times, “How do you make beer?” Well, brewing is a lot like cooking. I wouldn’t suggest trying to make a gourmet meal your first time ina kitchen, but making something delicious is as simple as following a basic recipe. Brewing your first beer can be pretty easy and very rewarding. There is nothing like the feeling of catching a buzz while enjoying the first beer you’ve brewed (and not driving). On the other hand, crafting an award winning home brew takes planning, experience and hard work. It’s best to start simple and go from there. Here is how I suggest you get started. To begin with you are going to need some basic home brewer equipment. A basic home brew set up will consist of a large pot to boil in, a bucket or jug to ferment the beer, another bucket for sanitizing, a thermometer, a bottle capper and some bottles. In total this shouldn’t run you more than $75 and you can use the equipment over and over again. You can purchase each item separately or together as a kit. I’d suggest buying this online to save some money. Try midwestsupplies. com or northernbrewer.com. They are both very reliable and have everything you need. Next you need your ingredients. Home brew stores will have a wide selection of favorite recipes. Pick 16

a popular beer you like and get brewing. When starting out, it’s best to brew extract beers. To keep with our cooking analogy, extract brewing is like making a chicken soup and starting with the stock already made. All grain brewing is like making soup from scratch. It takes a lot more equipment and know how. You could write a book (and many people have) on each step of the brewing process but to simplify, here are the basic steps you need to follow:

Cranberry Gin Fizz

Quarterback Sack

Ingredients • 1 oz G&J Greenalls Gin • 3 oz Cranberry Juice • 2 oz Fever Tree club soda Directions: Pour G&J Greenalls Gin over ice into glass. Add Cranberry Juice and Fever Tree Club Soda. Stir. Garnish with fresh cranberries and a lemon wedge.

1. Steep the grains around 155 degrees. 2. Add malt extract and bring to a boil. 3. Add the hops and continue to boil. 4. Cool the beer and add the yeast. 5. Wait for the beer to ferment. 6. Bottle the beer and then enjoy!

First Down Rum & Coke

It’s really not that hard. Humans having been brewing beer for thousands of years!

Directions: Pour Largo Bay Rum over ice into a glass. Add Cola and stir. Garnish with a lime.

If you’d like to learn more about home brewing there is a book that myself and nearly every other brewer starts with. Charlie Papazian’s The Joy Of Homebrewing is the Bible for home brewers.

Touchdown Vodka Tonic

Reach out to me on Twitter @The BrewerBill and let me know how your beer turns out.

Ingredients: • 2 oz Starr Blu Vodka • 1 oz Mr. Stacks Peach Schnapps Directions: Pour Starr Blu Vodka into a glass over ice. Add Mr. Stacks Peach Schnapps. Stir well

Halftime Sipper Ingredients: • 1 ½ oz Veil Citron • 1 oz Landucci Limoncello

Ingredients: • 2 oz Largo Bay Rum • 4 oz Cola

Directions: Pour Veil Citron and Landucci Limoncello

into a shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into a glass over ice.

Ingredients: • 2 oz Froggy B Vodka • 4 oz Fever Tree Tonic

Directions: Pour Froggy B Vodka over ice in glass. Add Fever Tree Tonic. Stir. Garnish with Lime wedge.

Timeout Orange Screwdriver

Ingredients: • 1 oz Poppin Orange Dream Vodka • 5 oz Sensational Orange Juice Directions: Pour Poppin’ Orange Dream Vodka over ice into glass. Add Sensational Orange Juice. Stir. Garnish with orange slice.

Sports Bar Etiquette 101 Editorial Note: We’ve all been you like the Eagles, and that your there and seen it: the loud favorite number is 69. mouth or drunk slumping over at the bar or running around making a jackass of himself and 6. After a full week of work, we all look forward to Sunday when we can go to one of our favorite sports bars to relax and enjoy the 1 o’clock game, the 4 o’clock game …or both. A couple of beverages, maybe a meal or apps and some good friends… the perfect day. What we don’t need is some obnoxious fool who thinks he know everything about every game. In an effort to prevent or lessen this type behavior, our writers are once again providing a brief tutorial on Sports Bar Etiquette 101 or the Seven Commandments for watching football in public.

There’s nothing or anyone else in the bar -- about worse than a friend bitching and being the only person slamming moaning about the calls all afternoon your fists against a table, chanting -- it’s not like your complaints are going to overturn a call from three “J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS!” time zones away. A grown man wearing a sports jersey in public is questionable enough, but to have a guy who is now playing for a hated rival immortalized across your back is absolutely impermissible. This goes for all of you Dolphins fans with Wes Welker jerseys, Redskins fans with Antonio Pierce jerseys, and Bears fans with Bernard Berrian jerseys. See also: Ty Law (Patriots), Nick Harper (Colts), Joe Horn (Saints), and Isaac Bruce (Rams). And don’t even think of getting a personalized jersey unless you’re under the age of twelve. No one cares that your name is Vinny,

4. Thou Shalt Not Quote ESPN.

As the Worldwide Leader slowly takes over the world, its various house organs (ESPN, ESPN.com, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU...) spend hours brainwashing sports fans on Sunday with endless pregame shows, web columns, and gales of forced laughter. This means a ban on

in the stomach when you’re going for a high five. Instead of cleanly celebrating, you’re forced to slap and hug your way towards some kind of impromptu cheer, all the while feeling embarrassed. Forget the chest bumps, the handshakes, and the “raise the roof” garbage -- figure out a plan before the game and stick with it until the end. If you win on the last play, there’s always room for an impromptu “Taco Bowl High Five.”

1. Thou Shalt Not Be a Jackass.

For those of you who lack any social skills this means: Don’t curse in front of children. Don’t send your food back to the kitchen three times. Don’t leave the bar before your table gets the bill. Don’t shave your team’s logo into in your head. Don’t bring your grad school books and study. Don’t bring a home-made sign. Don’t paint your face. And most importantly, don’t bring a loaded gun and shoot yourself in the leg.

A BRONX TALE: THE MUSICAL

Tw o

Editor’s Note: This musical had a one month run at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, NJ earlier this year. It will be coming to Broadway this fall at the N B Ron West O 48th A Street. D Longacre Theatre Following is a review of A Bronx Tale: the Musical while at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

on the

O

The tug of war for the soul of a young man on the mean streets of the Bronx may not sound like a subject that sings. But Chazz Palminteri’s “A Bronx Tale,” originally a solo show and later a movie, has proved to be comfortably malleable material. Now it has been given a hefty infusion of music and dance and — presto!, with most of its rough edges intact, can be found finger-snapping and doo-wopping its way across the stage of the Paper Mill Playhouse, with plans, no doubt, for a quick trip through the Lincoln Tunnel to the big time. The creative team is packed with veteran talent, resulting in an exceptionally slick

and skillfully assembled musical. Alan Menken, composer has provided the music, and Glenn Slater, supplied the lyrics. The book is by Mr. Palminteri, and Wdirecting A duo Y is perhaps most striking the — none other than Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks. T he show’s action takes place in the 1960s, allowing the composer to channel the pop styles of the era, from doo-wop harmonies to proto-rock to late-period Frank Sinatra-style balladeering. It’s a winning musical mix with proven appeal for Broadway. And while the ballads are sometimes stocked with clichés, the atmosphere of the bustling Italian-American neighborhood where the protagonist, Calogero, grows up is captured by Mr. Slater with lively humor As you’d expect, given Mr. Palminteri’s long involvement with the loosely autobiographical material, the tale itself remains essentially the same. As a young boy, Calogero, played with dynamic force and beaming spirit by Mr. Colley, gets on the good side of Sonny, the mob figure

nj

ENUES

who rules the neighborhood. Although his father, Lorenzo grudgingly approves of his son’s refusal to identify Sonny as the shooter in a neighborhood killing — for reasons of pragmatism — he and his wife, Rosina look on with dismay as Sonny takes their boy under his wing, drawing him in to his exotic but violent world, where Sonny’s gang proudly flouts the law. The moral arc of the plot may be familiar, even predictable, but it’s in the gritty details, often drawn with humor, that “A Bronx Tale” wins you over. Mr. Palminteri’s writing brims with sharply funny characterizations, as when the young Calogero describes a member of Sonny’s gang thus: “He was such a loser he would go to the racetrack and the teller would give him his tickets already ripped up.”

Sonny’s worldview, succinctly expressed in the phrase “the workingman’s a sucker,” initially causes some concern for Calogero, who looks up to his hard-working, bus-driving dad. But the allure of the mob life proves irresistible to the boy, especially after Sonny casually hands him a hundred-dollar bill after Calogero rolls some winning dice for him. Slickness and skill certainly aren’t all we want in a new musical. In this post-“Hamilton era now upon us, “A Bronx Tale” feels conventional: a sentimental tale of a man’s moral awakening combined with ear-friendly music. This is the kind of show that makes you laugh and cry.”

nj E N UES For our September issue of N UES E VenuesNJ I am extremely happy to present you with the very talented Angel Salazar. The Cuban born actor/ comedian has been performing and acting for many decades and is well known for co-starring with Al Pacino in both Carlito’s Way and Scarface and with Tom Hanks in Punchline as well as numerous other movies and by Steve Ortlieb television shows. As for his stand-up act, his reviews musical, with costumes and all. I thank my acting training for that. are always top notch, “Great show”, “this guy is hilarious”, “my stomach V-NJ: Where did you grow up and how hurt from laughing so much”. did you get into this crazy business? Salazar’s performance is a mixture of street-smart ethnic wisecracks, risqué humor, physical comedy and audience involvement. And this is a guy who studied with the best of the best. Unlike many of today’s actors who got their start as comics, Angel brought his acting skills to the stage after starting his career in theater and movies.

COMIC RELIEF Angel Salazar n boring. V-NJ: A quick glance of your IMDB page shows you to be quite the busy guy over the next year or so. Anything in particular

Venues-NJ: Angel, you have had a very, very successful and sustained career as both a stand-up comic and as an actor. I

know that the real money is in movies but the energy and intimacy of a live audience has to be intoxicating. Tell us a little about each and if either one translates to the other; you know, does the acting help with the stand-up or is the stand-up better for the acting? Angel Salazar: Because I’m an actor first, I use in my stand up all my acting abilities. I don’t tell jokes into a microphone. I actually perform. My act is very VISUAL and entertaining. Almost like a Broadway 26

AS: I come from a family of entertainers in my native Cuba. It’s in my genes. Here in the United States I treated acting as a profession not a hobby. I went to acting school...”LEE STRASBERG THEATER INSTITUTE “...did plays, both High School and College... I paid my dues. I did not get discovered walking down the street. I started doing stand up in the mid 80’s. Right around the time I was finishing Scarface.

we should be looking for?

V-NJ: You’re constantly on the road and you’re going to be in Hasbrouck Heights at Banana’s in September and Matawan at MJ’s Buttonwood in October. Does all the travel start to wear on you or is it just part of the job?

AS: Over the next few months all I’m doing is traveling and doing shows for very little money...doing independent movies also called “MOVIES THAT DON’T PAY”... and sleeping with those wild women from the 80’s n 90’s who unfortunately got a little old!

AS: First 15 years traveling was fun. Sleeping from hotel to hotel with all kinds of wild women was exciting. Now it’s dull To Advertise Call 732.995.1714

TD: I’ll be in Texas and Miami. I’m also working on a project called “CUBAN SANDWICH”... a gangster comedy film script. All I do is acting, comedy...nothing else. Showbiznezz iz my life. V-NJ: Aside from the shows I mentioned, what does your schedule look like for the rest of the year?

Communication

The act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information; the ways of sending information to people by using technology.

ESTORE… HELP WA It all started with a big bang! No, not the TV show -- the creation of our universe. Then came four-legged creatures, then two-legged creatures, and then Homo sapiens (man). And, as night follows day, next came ways to communicate: signing, grunts and language. As things evolved, new ways of communication took form. Stone carvings, print, sound transmission, etc., etc., etc. It seems each day new technologies are developed to “help” us to communicate information to each other. While new and constant developments in communication offer many positives in our daily lives, they also have negative aspects. We, and certainly the next generation are losing our skills when it comes to the art of “personal” communication. At home, the family sits around the house watching videos, playing with tablets and messaging friends on their iPhones. The “family chat” or one-on-one interaction with each other has vanished. When you go out to a restaurant and see a couple sitting at a table, chances are that each has his/her head downward “thumbs at the ready” texting others. We’re losing touch with each other. In conducting business in today’s world, we communicate by email or text messaging rather than picking up the phone and have a personal conversation. By doing so, we don’t know if the recipient actually received our message and if so, we hope for a reply or response. Even if you do get a response, it’s missing the underlying personal verbal expressions of the other party. I’m not suggesting we go back to the “stone ages” of communications. What I am suggesting is that we put technology in its place when it comes to communicating. Let’s use our verbal skills to let people know how we really feel and what we think. Try it. Use your phone to actually communicate by speaking to the person on the other end. You’ll be surprised at the results.
