Letter to Our Readers

Halloween is a mixed bag of fun and “at home” while serving you your libation of

thrills (or should I say chills). For some, it’s the excitement of “trick or treat”; for others, it’s a haunting time of zombies, vampires and witched. Ancients and modern mystics believe that the veil between the spirit world and the living world is the thinnest on October 31, a time when restless souls pierce through to haunt the living. Our writers have compiled a list of scary venues throughout the region where you can visit and experience the darker side of “All Hollows Eve”. On the lighter side, they have also provided a listing of Halloween Costume Parties being hosted by various dining & entertainment venues in the area. Take a few moments to review, then get out and join in the excitement and fun. Life brings people together in strange ways. Take a few guys from law enforcement and a couple of firemen introduced through unforeseen circumstances and you get a band called Suspended Justice. This classic and southern rock band has been together for only about a year and a half, but they are rockin’ the Central Jersey area …. and, fans are lovin’ it. Read more njabout them in this njmonth’s Band Profile. S N UE us introduce you to Katie Cook, E N U E S Now, letE a very personable young woman who holds down to bartending jobs while studying to enter the field of criminal justice as an nj j n investigator. Katie has the type personality S E U N E E N U E Sthat will make any customer feel relaxed and

choice. If you’re in the Brick area, stop in to either Quaker Steak & Lube or PJ Sweeney’s to meet Katie and say “Hi”. Read more about Katie, this issue’s Mixologist-of-the-Month. Oktoberfest is not just a type of beer, it’s a worldwide festival of beer drinking dating back to 1810 originating in Munich, Germany. Our beer connoisseur, Bill “The Brewer” gives us a bit of interesting history on the beginnings of the event itself and tells us briefly about the beer style. Check out this month’s All That’s Beer feature. This month, our contributing writer, Steve O. introduces us to a comic / actor knows as the “under-dressed everyman”. John Caparulo is a hard working comedian from the Midwest who does over 200 appearances on the road each year. He will be appearing here in NJ this month. Read about John in this issue’s Comic Relief column and, if you get a chance catch him at the Count Basie Theatre on Oct 3rd. There’s a lot of activity goin’ on in the area this month for your enjoyment. Get out and get your share.

Suspended Justice

Suspended Justice consists entirely of active duty law enforcement, retired law enforcement, and fire service members. Through their working relationships, they were introduced to each other. They have been performing together since early 2015. The members are Jeff Algor (aka: Jersey Jeff) as Lead vocals, background vocals, percussion; Brian Kerrigan (aka: Priest) on lead guitar/ background vocals; Sean O’Connor (aka: Big Sean from America) on bass guitar/background vocals, keyboard; Tommy Kenny (aka: Tommy Terrific) on rhythm guitar/background/lead vocals and Bobby Kearstan (aka: Bam bam/ Thunder Bobby) on drums/background vocals. Suspended: To bar for a period from a privilege, office, or position, usually as a punishment; to stop for a period of time. Justice: the quality of being just or fair.

Suspended Justice created their name from very personal happenings in their lives. According to the group, “Some of our members have been SUSPENDED from their duties as a result of “professionally performing our sworn duties and because we didn’t give in to political pressure. We were made out to be scapegoats for the actions of others”. “We believe in JUSTICE for all and will always maintain our hope and faith that “JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED”! Now you know. Let’s get to the music. Suspended Justice is a classic and southern rock band playing songs from the 1960’s straight through to today. Jeff says, “We try to keep the songs as close to the original artist as we can. We enjoy playing songs that everyone in the crowd knows and can either sing along or 10

dance to. We enjoy it when the crowd does both”. The shows may start with “Fortunate Son” and “Gimme Three Steps”. Jeff explains, “When we start a show, we like to come out the door swinging to wake up the audience and prepare them for what is coming their way for the next three plus hours. Some of the slower tempo favorites are “Take it Easy”, “Neon Moon”, and “Draggin’ the Line”. “Prior to closing out a set, we always bring the energy level back up with crowd favorites like, “Keep Your Hands to Yourself”, “Sweet Home Alabama”, and “Wagon Wheel”. Jeff continues, “We like to end our shows with some classic ZZ Top songs like “Tush” and “La Grange”. Most of our regular fans know that it’s coming and they enjoy our lead guitarist’s shredding and all band members impromptu energy level. All of our guitarists are wireless, so it gives them all a great opportunity to leave the stage and mingle with bar staff and patrons. We enjoy singing and dancing with our fans and leaving them with a sense of a great time and looking forward to our next show”. At every performance the band takes great pride in paying their deepest respect to American Soldiers. “We enjoy playing “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” by Toby Keith and always take a moment and speak with the crowd about thanking a Vet every chance they get. The response is overwhelming every time. We like to identify our Vets, in attendance, and publically thank them for their service”. The band’s set lists are created for each venue that they play. “Each nightclub, bar, and venue is unique and we routinely move our song selection around and check out the response to keep it fresh for our loyal fans. We play two, three or four sets based upon what each bar/restaurant is trying to accomplish. Keeping people in their seats or on the To Advertise Call 732.995.1714

dance floor adds to a better bar ring at the end of the night so we tend to start early and run late. We typically perform at least 48 songs per show”. “Many folks, when they hear that we are current or former law enforcement have a fixed mindset… until they see us perform and see how approachable our band brothers are. We provide a safe and fun environment at our shows. We always like our fans to feel that they are important, welcome, and respected. We want all our fans to take away the feeling that they enjoyed the music and show, forgot about their problems, and can’t wait to rock out again with us soon.” At the end of every show, the band enjoys talking with new and old fans. “We enjoy hearing both positive and negative suggestions on our performances. Jeff explains, “We’re never satisfied with our last performance and continually strive to get better. “When our fans come up to us and say something like, you guys killed it or you guys rocked it, it obviously makes us feel good”. “We are very fortunate that not only do we make music together, but we all get along and truly like each other. Ok…love each other….Band Brothers”. Suspended Justice plays throughout the Central Jersey area and can be seen and heard on a regular basis at The Cabin Restaurant, River Rock Restaurant and Marina Bar, The Headliner, The Manasquan Beach House, Woody’s Roadside Tavern, The Idle Hour, Richie’s Sports Bar, and The Nip N Tuck. facebook.com/suspendedjustice twitter.com/SuspendedJust instagram.com/suspendedjustice/ Looking to book? Katie Cook

by CLARE MARIE CELANO

Katie Cook is a hard worker, can pretty much make conversation with anyone, is quick on her feet and enjoys having people kickback, relax and unwind in her company. All those characteristic make her the perfect candidate for a bartending job. And although there is a plan in place to become an investigator (she has a degree in criminal justice, and is also working on a second degree), right now, working as a bartender is the best deal for her. Katie learned bartending on the job, when she was moved up from server to bartender at Quaker Steak & Lube three years ago. She also bartends at P.J Sweeney’s, both in Brick, her

hometown. “I enjoy living close to both jobs,” says Katie, who adds that with a crazy work schedule it makes it a little easier to maintain both jobs. She also worked at Bamboo nightclub in Seaside, where she said she learned the different ways to bartend, “some strict and some laid back ways. I learned to really feel my own way on the type of bartender I wanted to become,” she said. In addition to her regular jobs she’s also doing side bartending gigs, working for herself. “I like meeting people, who at first are strangers, then after a beer and some conversation they become

friends,” says Katie. “I am a people person and even on my free time when I’m out and about, I cannot help but make conversation with just about anyone. Some of the advice I have received from strangers or bar regulars, I will carry with me forever.” Aside from her work, Katie enjoys being with her family and makes time nj

every week to see her 1 1/2year old nephew Christopher, and help with watching him and her little brother Joshua. Katie is very family oriented and even with her busy work schedule she makes time to hang out at her mother’s with her family. Additionally, Katie enjoys working out at the MAX in Brick and going out with friends. The bartender says she will probably remain in the field part-time even after her schooling is complete. She says the job is a lot of fun and the people she meets and the stories she hears and witnesses “definitely” outweigh the negative things that come with the job, such as intoxicated customers, bad tippers and people who look at bartending as not a “real” job. “The money we make is real, and the experiences we partake in are real,” she explains. “In the bar business you need to have thick skin, a bubbly personality and definitely confidence. Also, you have to be aware of your surroundings especially when alcohol is involved, because people do crazy things!”

r e e B by Bill “The Brewer”

History in a Glass:

Oktoberfest

If you find yourself at the bar this month, you’re bound to see a few Oktoberfest beers on tap. If you’re not familiar with this beer style, you should definitely give it a try. Oktoberfest is a type of beer, as well as a massive worldwide festival of beer drinking. The Oktoberfest beer is a delicious roasted lager with a little more kick than the average brew. The Oktoberfest party dates back more than 200 years and is celebrated all over the world. Oktoberfest started in Munich, Germany in October (of course) of 1810. It seems a King Ludwig got married to a Princess Theresa and invited the whole city of Munich. The king and his bride partied on the lawn of the gates of the city, and invited everyone. The city of Munich has been throwing the bash of all bashes there ever since. It was so legendary that the lawn is named “Wiesn”, from the original German Theresienwiese or Theresa’s Meadow in English. Last year more than 16 millions pints of Oktoberfest were served during the 18 day festival at Wiesn. That’s a lot of beer! The beer that was served at the wedding party has a long history as well. Oktoberfest beer is actually older than the wedding of King Ludwig. 14

What’s a truly scary situation? A Halloween party without any creepy cocktails. Serve up these cool sips and your gathering will be one spooky success.

ibations Devil’s Punch

Oktoberfest is really a German Marzen or March beer. Before refrigeration, beer would spoil easier if brewed during the hot summer. People would brew a large amount of full flavor, higher alcohol beer in March, and store it underground in cool cellars for the summer months. This crisp, roasted lager beer became known as Marzen beer, and was used for celebrations during the early fall. (I wonder if the King planned his wedding around the beer?) The Oktoberfest party in Munich has since spilled into cities all over the world and has inspired brewers to fill their fermenters with Marzen/Oktoberfest inspired brews. Technically speaking, at Oktoberfest in Munich only 6 breweries can sell authentic Oktoberfest beer. All the breweries are located in Munich and brew according to the Reinheitsgebot, the German brewing purity law. This doesn’t mean you can’t find a great Oktoberfest style brew at your local bar. Brewers all over the world pay homage to Oktoberfest beers this time of year.

Through the centuries, any fear-inducing human monstrosity (zombies, vampires, Frankenstein-type reanimations, evil witches, etc.) or iconic phobia (spiders, bats) have come to share the scare party.

Still, “I Holiday Inn know that the joy and don’t know if I’m supposed to say this,” escape they’ll provide at Studio 54 isn’t confides Greenberg, “but the house guys an act of frivolity; on the contrary, right at Studio 54 say that this is the biggest now, it’s of utmost importance. show they’ve ever had there in terms of pure bulk of scenery and props and “In these extremely troubling times, special effects. biz for a quieter life in Connecticut. Of course, you can take the actor out of the theatre, but you can’t take the theatre out of the actor; so Jim turns his new farmhouse into an inn, featuring performances to celebrate each holiday throughout the year. He finds a star (and a connection) with local schoolteacher Linda. A love triangle forms when Jim’s best friend, dancer Ted, tries to lure Linda to Hollywood. “It’s the kind of musical that, for a choreographer, is the greatest blessing in the world,” says Denis Jones. The score includes tunes like “Blue Skies”

and “Steppin’ Out With My Baby.” Audiences can expect “lots of tap and lots of ballroom and incredible athleticism that these dancers bring into the room.” Even as the show’s origins harken back to the heyday of musical theatre, contemporary audiences need not balk. “This is a 2016 version” says Pinkham. “It’s been adapted by our contemporaries, and we are providing audiences the chance to reflect on how far we’ve come and the differences we’ve chosen to make in ours. It’s a history lesson, it’s a civics lesson, and it’s a damn good time.”

EENNUUEESS

John Caparulo, known asE “the N UES under-dressed everyman” is the comic everyone has seen and we all want to see again and again. Whether you know him as a semi regular on the E! hit show, Chelsea Lately or from his numerous appearances on late night TV with Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel or even his Mad Cap Hour on SiriusXM radio, we’ve all seen by Steve Ortlieb and heard him. While he spends most of his leisure V-NJ: My brother had been a semi-regular in a couple of series years ago and when time (and there’s precious little of that I went to visit, one of my memories is the with nearly 200 road appearances a Craft Services table. Holy crap, how hard is year) on the West Coast, he will be it to stay away from all of that food or does performing right here in New Jersey it get kind of old? twice this October. JC: : Craft Services sounds like a wondrous Venues-NJ: Well, as probably one of the bonanza of junk food. But unless you’re 10 or so people to watch every episode of into stuffing your face with carrot sticks it’s Work It when it aired three years ago, please just a big, fat letdown. There’s no burgers, tell us what it was like being a regular on a no ice cream, no cranberry sauce or Nativesit-com? Were you strictly the “talent” or did Americans-just bagels, rice cakes and diet you ever get to work with the writers. Exactly soda. Sometimes there were brownies but how involved were you in the process? that was only when I brought brownies with me. And nobody else seemed to John Caparulo: : I’m pretty sure you meant be interested in them, just because they to say both episodes, but I appreciate the were supposedly “unhealthy” and weren’t good intentions. When I auditioned for it, “gluten free” and “had been sitting in my the producers actually let me change every pockets all morning”. one of my lines. But once we got into the thick of a weekly production schedule, I V-NJ: Let’s talk about you. You’re a regular quickly realized that my little alterations guy from the Midwest now a stand-up would only make things comic/actor who is seemingly on the road 400 days a year. First, what got you started in this business; class clown, a dare? With a relatively new family, do you travel together or are you out there alone?

COMIC RELIEF John Caparulo

JC: My journey started like so many others. I pooped my pants at basketball practice. I was in the 6th grade and beginning to realize my chances of making the NBA were fairly slim. That’s when it hit mediarrhea! It’s kind of a long story so I won’t get into all the details here. But that night turned out to be the first of many crappy experiences that I would be able to spin into a funny story that could make me and everyone else around me laugh. And to me, that’s worth more than any pair of underwear or sweatpants or gym shoes could ever be. Laughter really is a beautiful thing, but it often begins in ugly places.

more difficult for the writing staff. So I had to learn to make the best out of what was in the script. Sure I might have made a few dollars for re l a t i ve l y painless work. But at the end of the day it just sucked. 26

bad. It’s bad because I hate being away from my wife and daughter for several days at a time. But it’s good because I’d rather they get to stay home and not have to deal with the grind of travelling. I mean, somebody should get to enjoy themselves around here! V-NJ: Since you’ve been at this as a professional, what are some of the biggest moments you’ve had, whether it was meeting someone you’ve always admired or maybe just a great audience after a set at a small club? JC: This career, like any other, has its ups and downs. It has some great moments, and unfortunately it has a lot of tough ones too. But sometimes I think about if I’d never taken that first step, if I’d never gathered up the courage to go out and chase my dreams. Then I never would have met my wife, and we never would have had our daughter. So I guess that Jamie and Madden (John’s wife and daughter respectively) would have to be the 2 most important people I’ve met along the way. Note: I want to remind everyone that John will be performing on October 1st in Englewood, NJ at the Bergen Performing Arts Center and on October 3rd in Red Bank at the Count Basie Theatre. To learn and see more of John you can go to his website at johncaparulo.com.

To answer the second part of your question; I’m usually by myself on the road, which is both good and venuesNJ

Planning

Forethought; the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired goal.

It’s that time of year again. Time to start thinking about the future, at least in the short-term (the next 12 months). The act of planning for what might lie ahead can be broken down into four types: immediate, shortterm, mid-tern and long term.

Call 211 or go online to

Immediate – you suddenly realize your in-laws are coming to visit for the weekend. What to do? What to get? Dine in or out? This type of situation calls for some quick planning.

You can also contact this Central Call Center to volunteer What: 5K Run / Walk To Outrun Hunger

Short-term – you’re going on a two week vacation. What do you need to buy? … Stop the mail … Do I need a bathing suit? What do I need to do to get ready? Mid-term – We’re going to need a new car in about six months. Where would I get the best deal? SUV or sports car? Buy or lease?

Long-term – saving for your kids’ post-high school education. College or Votech? Private or public? Away or close to home? Whether the planning is for your family or your business, some “homework” - detail gathering and organizing -- is a requisite. What have we done in the past? Has it worked? What can we do to improve things?

cane Sandy Notificat In the hospitality business, now is the time to plan for the coming New Year. What can we do to ensure that 2017 will be better than the past year? How can we build more awareness and customer traffic? There is no one answer!

Before you set your plans for next year, do your due diligence, listen to those who have “in field” experience, find out where to get the maximum out of your targeted investment. In short: “Where are you going to get more bang for your buck?” In order to accommodate all venues wishing to partner with Venues NJ during the coming new year, while allowing them to work within their individual budget constraints and limitations, we have developed three participation options. Our mission is to allow virtually every dining & entertainment venue the opportunity to work with Venues NJ in order to build their awareness and image by reaching our vast and growing Central NJ audience throughout the entire year. As a proprietor/owner, you will be learning more about these program options over the next few months. Stay tuned.
