hello
IT’S BEEN A DIFFICULT START TO THE YEAR, but in true Aussie style, we’ve banded together to support each other however we can. Here at Bauer Media, the magazines have teamed up to launch a company-wide initiative called Rebuild Our Towns, in light of the devastating bushfires. It’s a website where each week we will focus on an affected area, highlighting what has happened there and what the community can do to support the regeneration process. It’s not necessarily about donations of money, but rather, sending books, educational games and playground equipment to schools, or visiting the shops, tourism and hospitality businesses that are open and in need of our patronage. Head to Rebuildourtowns.com.au to find out more, and don’t forget to check back weekly. Conscious of the fact that we all want to be kinder to the environment, this issue we’ve included a bunch of homes that were created with a gentle approach, whether that be using natural materials, restoring treasured pieces or sourcing furniture and homewares second hand. Also important, particularly at times like these, is finding happiness in the simple things. Our up-front decorating story (p14) is based on three joyful moments: coffee in bed, eating ice cream and enjoying the beauty of flowers – and why it’s OK not to have a perfectly styled home. A bit of mess can be a good thing! However, if being organised is your jam, we have a feature on storage, too (p120). Wherever you live, I hope you and your loved ones are safe and feeling supported. We’re in this together. All is calm Natural materials have such a calming effect, both inside and outside. To see more of this beautiful home, see p50.

creature comforts Art, photos, trinkets you’ve had “since forever” and flowers you just couldn’t resist... these things all make a home feel loved. So too can the right furniture. The trick is to choose items, such as sofas, with the same care you take when buying a bed. A sofa should be the kind of place you want to take naps and crash on after a long day, with enough room to squeeze in lots of friends.

MODERN HIS T ORY

words lindyl crabb
Self-described as a journalist with a camera, Slim Aarons turned photographing the rich and famous into an art form BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA, there was Slim Aarons. A New Yorker armed with charisma and a camera, Slim spent the mid-20th century documenting the never-before-seen lives of celebrities and socialites in their Mediterranean holiday homes and behind the scenes of Beverly Hills afterparties. His famous subjects and friends – it’s impossible to list them without name-dropping: Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe – granted him access to their rarefied social circles and posed in front of his lens without make-up artists, artificial lights or airbrushing. But Slim’s day to day wasn’t always châteaus and Champagne. Born George Allen Aarons, Slim trained as a photographer in the army. His time on the battlefield gave him the opportunity to work with well-known photojournalists and a taste of life abroad, but having witnessed the horrors of war he vowed to only take pictures of “attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places”. So, at the end of WWII, a young Slim headed to Rome where he worked for Life magazine, which was known for the quality of its photography. It was Hollywood’s Golden Age, the economy was booming, and his large-format colour portraits soon appeared in the most prestigious publications. Snapping the likes of Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy meant summers were spent in Capri, winters in the Swiss Alps. The combination of great genes and glamorous locations made for iconic images that still inspire photographers and fashion magazines today, and unsurprisingly, continue to trend on social media feeds. R

Born in 1916, George ‘Slim’ Allen Aarons joined the US army at 18 and served as a photographer in WWII. James Stewart’s character in Rear Window is said to be based on Slim, who snapped the actor in Kings of Hollwood (left).
1948
His jet-setting career took off in 1948 at Life magazine. Slim also worked for Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Town & Country and Vogue. Pictured is his photograph of sunbathers in Capri.

Slim published his work in three books. The first, A Wonderful Time: An Intimate Portrait of the Good Life, was released in 1974 and included the iconic Poolside Gossip (left), taken at Kaufmann House in Palm Springs.

Founder Beck Wadworth’s home office is the stuff of monochromatic dreams SECLUDED FROM DOMESTIC DISTRACTIONS and tucked away in a quiet corner of her light-filled Parnell home, Beck Wadworth’s newly designed home office is a lesson in pared-back perfection. Keeping with the chic design ethos and minimalist palette that has become synonymous with her stationery brand An Organised Life, Beck joined forces with the team at local interior studio Slow to create a space that would inspire and motivate her between visits to the brand’s HQ in Sydney. “For me personally, I’m more productive in a clean space that is organised and functional. I hate clutter!” says Beck. “My motto is ‘a clear space equals a clear mind’.” The result is a detail-driven design that’s equal parts modern and classic, underscored by the functionality Beck requires from a home office. But most importantly, it’s a fitting reflection of both herself and her brand. “It’s important to walk into a space, no matter how big or small, and have it motivate and push you,” says Beck. “A space that, at the end of the day, makes you happy.” @reallivingmag

Raise the roof A large section of the home’s exterior is covered with straw thatch to evoke tropical beach hut vibes. Outside in Full-height windows run the perimeter of the house while the garden is intentionally kept overgrown to soften the concrete exterior.
homes Hunters and gatherers The kitchen is filled with an assortment of ceramics that homeowners Hilda and Daniel Mitchell have collected over the years while travelling. Thanks to the clever use of split levels, the couple can sit at the large timber dining table and keep an eye on their two boys as they play in the living room on the upper level.
who lives here? Daniel Mitchell, creative director of Potato Head Group in Bali, his wife Hilda, their two boys, aged 6 and 5, plus dogs Pancho and Georgie. Potatohead.co | @potatoheadbali A
A TYPICAL DAY IN THE CANGGU HOME of Hilda Mitchell and her husband Daniel involves simple pleasures: reading in the hammock, playing music, swimming in the pool, watching the kids play in the garden. In an effort to “soften” the raw concrete house they built with Bali-based architect Patisandhika in 2017, they nestled it within the surrounding wild scrub. Sustainability was important and the building was designed to cool naturally. The split-level kitchen and dining space doesn’t have walls to allow the breeze in, and an overhanging roof “keeps the direct sun from penetrating the double-height windows”, says Hilda. HARD AND SOFT When Hilda and Daniel first bought the property 10 years ago, it was a rice field. Their vision was for an austere structure surrounded by vegetation. “We wanted minimal materials to complement the natural landscape,” says Hilda of the exposed concrete abode that took two years to build. Today, greenery creeps all over the exterior and palm trees are visible through every window. Inside, they’ve decorated with indoor plants including a large pandanus tree in the living room. LEVEL WITH ME Even though they have young children, Hilda and Daniel aren’t concerned about the split-level design. “It’s a good way for them to learn to be present and focus on the space they are in. Touch wood, we haven’t had any incidents so far!” says Hilda. Even though the house is big, the mixed levels “allow each space to be visible and connected while also creating intimacy”. The main living area is a large double-height void, but a raised timber library wall adds warmth. PERSONAL TOUCH And as far as the interior decoration goes, it’s very personal and uncontrived. “We don’t really go for a specific type of thing, we just put items together as we go along,” says Hilda. Their home is comprised of an amalgamation of pieces that they have collected over the past 15 years, and the concrete makes for a neutral backdrop against which they can hang sentimental paintings created by their sons. Other meaningful pieces include a hand-carved front door that features the traditional Hindu peace symbol. The couple make a lot of their own furniture and have painted planks of wood in primary colours and scattered them throughout the house. There are no rules. “We just buy what we like and put it together!” R real living

Life partners Hilda and Daniel stand in the living room, which includes a light coloured sofa draped with a natural indigo dye rug from Pejeng in Ubud, and a bright abstract artwork by one of their sons. The couple embrace a casual lifestyle in Canggu, which is full of surfers, hipsters and health-food cafes.

Music to my ears The wall of timber shelves was designed to store books and the couple’s vinyl record archive. The speakers are vintage JBL. “Music and books are favourite things, so our house revolves around them,” Hilda says. A

Hanging out Hilda and Daniel lie in the hammock daily to read, while the kids use it as a swing. The couple wanted to have a big tree inside so dug a 2.5m hole for its sunken pot before pouring the concrete. Worldly possessions The hammock from Mexico sits alongside Isamu Noguchi’s ‘Akari 10A’ floor lamp (opposite); the vintage rug is Iranian.

TO THE VISITORS WHO STAY HERE, it’s a holiday house, albeit one that could be the location of an Italian romance film. But for owners Kristine Standnes and her husband Gianmattia de Genio, it is an heirloom that “has been in the family for three centuries”. Situated in the Apulian countryside, their Masseria Angiulli Piccolo is one of several traditional fortified farmhouses in the area. Neglected for 50 years, time had weathered the stone and brick structure and star vault ceilings, however, Kristine says there were “strong incentives to proceed with a large renovation”. The property’s ancient vineyards still produced organic olive oil and wine grapes, and, more importantly, “the masseria remained in the soul of the family”. TEST OF TIME In theory, the goal was simple – restore the building to its former glory and turn it into a rural retreat with updated comforts. In reality, the need to acquire permits and source specific traditional materials meant the project took years. “Restoring the facade and floors with the original chianche stone was laborious,” she tells. “We scoured the region for reusable materials and it was hard to find skilled artisans.” But the architect in Kristine wouldn’t have it any other way. “The structure is so beautiful, it didn’t make sense to add modern architecture. In the end this was a winning philosophy.” CULTURAL HARMONY As for the interiors, Kristine balanced the celestial ceilings and walled fireplaces with a less-ismore approach to decorating. “I adapt my style to the environment. In this case, it’s a combination of rural simplicity and modern minimalism.” Teak furniture, natural textiles and Apulian ceramics enhance the home’s rustic Italian charm, while classic Scandinavian designs inject colour that is easy to live with. “I’m Norwegian and I have a love for these pieces,” she says. “And at the same time, Italian creativity and Scandinavian sensibility work perfectly together!” It’s a reflection of her family’s mixed heritage, a tribute to their history and a sign of all the holidays they’ll spend here in the future. Facade first The family of five pose for a photo facing the courtyard. “We spent many summers here when our children were babies, now we come every season,” Kristine says. European union Italian designs including a table by Eugenia Crivelli Visconti and vessels by local artist Enza Fasano are styled with mid-century icons, such as the Eames armchair and small Tulip table in the living area (opposite). Colour and texture are used minimally so the focus stays on the architecture.

Star crossed “Every time I stay, I’m amazed by their beauty,” Kristine says of the cross vault ceilings, which were built from tuff, a local sandstone. Many of the home’s ceramic wares, including these painted vessels, were designed by her friend Enza Fasano. Next to the kitchen door is a pair of white Panton chairs. OPPOSITE, CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT Chick style Ceramic hens by Enza adorn the living room coffee table. Close knit “Current life doesn’t leave much free time, so I love to spend it in a genuine way – with family or a good group of friends. That’s the main reason we come here,” says Kristine (pictured top far right). Made locally Their holiday home is just a five minute drive from Grottaglie, a town famous for its pottery. Colour in the lines While the farmhouse’s exterior and interior walls have been kept bare in keeping with tradition, the French door and window frames are painted in a light duck egg blue, as seen from the courtyard.
3 Apulianinspired style ideas
1
Lean into a neutral scheme. Choose surfaces and large furniture pieces in natural white and stone hues, then inject colour with smaller decor items.
2
Layer textiles with restraint. Bed, bath and table linens and a few cushions will do. If your home has beautiful floors or exposed features, don’t cover them up!

style tip You don’t need to splurge on a set of statement chairs to give a room style cred. Just one eye-catching design displayed in an unused space will do the trick A
Rest & relaxation The upstairs bedrooms are furnished sparingly, “because the space in itself is so beautiful,” Kristine says. “The main thing for me is that the furniture blends in with the surroundings.” This room has its own cast iron bath and a Panton chair. In with the new A Platner armchair by Knoll echoes the colour of olive branches in another bedroom. Unlike the traditional stone floors downstairs, oak was used upstairs after Kristine realised wood was a practical, lightweight option above the cross vaults. OPPOSITE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Sun rise A large Apulian pumi by Enza Fasano stands sentry on the rooftop, which offers views of the rural landscape as far as the eye can see. Top textiles Kristine buys linen bedding from Society Limonta; for cotton sheets she prefers Bellora. Art of stone The yellow pumi on the rooftop can be seen from the courtyard. Vanity wares Bedrooms with bathtubs are thoughtfully fitted out with sinks, wall hooks and simple shelving units.

La dolce vita The pool was designed by Kristine and took six months to build. It’s the perfect new addition to her family’s holiday house, which they rent out year round. AS THE SUNLIGHT STREAMS THROUGH THE CANOPY OF TREES that surround Georgie Wilson and Chris Liem’s Mornington Peninsula home, it creates a mesmerising glow that fills the home with a comforting warmth. It was all part of the creative couple’s vision to transform this classic yet poky surf shack into a stylish family home that was equal parts tree house and beach house. Initially purchased as a weekender for the then Melbourne-based couple in 2007, the 1960s abode in the coastal town of Rye turned into their permanent base just two years later, after the lure of laidback, stress-free living proved too strong to resist. GROWING PAINS However quaint, its small spaces and serious lack of storage meant that as their family grew, so too did the need for a renovation. The makeover was a chance for the couple to create a functional home full of personality that also catered for their children Sunny and Dusty. Thanks to some clever design work, the previously compact home was transformed into a light-filled pad that celebrates open-plan living and the designer duo’s artistic flair. “The house has evolved around our little family,” Georgie says. “As it has grown, so has its sense of playfulness and adventure.” There’s a secret window in the kids’ room that doubles as a door to the garden, where they can climb out to find rope swings, a trampoline, cubby house and a half-pipe for Chris and Sunny (and soon Dusty) to skate on – not to mention the fire pit where toasted marshmallows are a regular feature. It’s a kid’s paradise. TREE CHANGE However, it’s the cascading decks with Moonah trees growing through them that the couple profess to love the most, especially artist Georgie, who remains eternally inspired by her surroundings. “Looking out of our huge windows is like being in a tree house,” she says. “It’s on those sunny days that I look around and feel happiest, especially when I’m painting in my studio.” The outlook also provides a connection to the home’s natural interior elements, such as the plywood detailing and timber flooring – the perfect backdrop for bursts of bold colour via ever-changing artworks and mid-century furniture pieces. GOOD VIBES ONLY “From the moment we bought the house it was always a place for us and our friends to get away and make memories in,” Georgie says. “There’s been a lot of entertaining over the past decade, from barbecues and campfires to Easter egg hunts and family gatherings. It really is a dream house and one we have no plan of leaving for quite some time.” R @reallivingmag

A HIDDEN OASIS IN THE FOOTHILLS of the Tramuntana Mountain Range, the sleepy little village of Moscari on the Spanish island of Mallorca is surrounded by undulating hills and postcard-worthy scenes of almond and olive trees. So when Mercedes Lopez and Mads Linden has the opportunity to make a small piece of it their home away from home, they jumped at the chance. BUILDING THE DREAM The couple purchased a tradtional Spanish farmhouse in the region in 2015, and spent 18 months transforming it into a family weekender. For Mercedes, a renovation that was respectful of the home’s original character was paramount. The downstairs powder room was sacrificed in favour of a larger kitchen, and the guestroom made way for an expansive open-plan living room. This is where the family comes together to reconnect, playing board games in summer and snuggling by the fireplace in winter. Outdoors, a pool carved out of natural stone is put to good use in the warmer months. SENSE OF PLACE The crisp white, lime-coated walls were kept naturally rounded and bare to allow the breathtaking scenery to take the role of artwork, and the verdant views never fail to disappoint. “Looking out over the field and villages of Campanet and Búger is so soothing and serene,” Mercedes says. “When the farmer brings his sheep to eat among the trees, I could watch them for hours. It’s so meditative.” Bringing the outdoors in was all part of the plan to keep things “perfectly imperfect”. The home was filled with thoughtfully curated antiques and rustic pieces to create a warm, naturally inviting atmosphere that ensures the family are able to switch into holiday mode whenever they arrive. “I step inside and instantly feel calm. My body becomes lighter,” Mercedes says. “I feel embraced by nature and being able to share it with the people I love makes it even sweeter.” R
FROM LEFT Sitting pretty Mercedes reclines in the lounge area of the family’s expansive garden. Old style While custom-built cabinets and modern appliances allow the family the creature comforts of home, Mercedes wanted to retain the traditional feeling of a Mallorcan “finca” or farmhouse by adorning the kitchen benchtops and walls with vintage pieces that make the space feel homely. “Creativity flows when I’m in here,” she says. Hung up An antique shelf houses dinnerware from local ceramicists. Postcard ready The dreamy stone farmhouse exterior acts as a backdrop to the outdoor entertaining space. Kids zone Oliver and Felix love to sleep and play in their bedroom. “When their friends come over, we lay the mattresses like a big tent so they can all sleep together,” Mercedes says. “It’s very cosy.” The bespoke animal masks are by local ceramicist Jaume Roig. @reallivingmag

Heart of the home Sweet sculptural pieces, like these bud vases from Jaume Roig hung in the kitchen, are used in place of artworks around the home. The concrete benchtops and built-in sink are a neutral base for the antique pieces Mercedes has collected over the years.
simple tricks for incorporating rustic wares
1
Rustic pieces have the potential to feel dark and heavy. Keep things light and bright by using a neutral base of pure white or light grey.
2
Opt for natural and durable materials that can stand the test of time, like jute rugs, washable linen and sturdy woods.
3
Skip the crowded bookshelves and stacks of pillows for pared-back styling that allows your hero pieces to stand out. A real living
79
Wild oasis When installing the pool, the couple wanted it to look as if it had always been there, so natural stone and micro-cement was used to create a traditional feel. The pool is surrounded by almond trees, succulents and lavender that gives off a heavenly smell in summer. “At night, when it’s so hot you can’t fall asleep, I like to turn off all the lights and float in the darkness, lit only by the moon and stars above,” Mercedes says. “It’s truly magical.” A

Parents’ retreat As with the rest of the home, the windows in the main bedroom don’t have blinds or curtains, to take full advantage of the mountain views. Vintage hand-painted linen from Espanyolet creates a cosy feel, while sculptures by Jaume Roig add an element of tactility to the minimal aesthetic. The bud vases, jute rug and chair were vintage finds also. Old is new The existing bathroom was rebuilt in keeping with the traditional vibe, with the shower formed from curved concrete in place of a modern glass screen. The tapware and mirror were vintage finds from local antique dealers. Lining up At the entry, a wicker pendant from Viveca hangs above items from local makers.

homes Green room The garden is kept a “little bit wild” by Mercedes. “I want to feel the freedom of the plants and I love to see how they make their own way.” Framing the outdoor dining area is a canopy of vines that create shade in summer and fill with juicy grapes in August. A
All together now Custom-designed by local artisan Espanyolet, the huge sofa is a welcoming hub for all the family and friends that pass through. The puzzle-like coffee table by Con Alma is a multipurpose piece, with sculptures by Jaume Roig sitting on top.

rebuild ourtowns • AU S S I E S L E N D I N G A H A N D •
The practical things you can do to help rebuild Australia, one town at a time There’s not a single Australian who hasn’t had their hearts broken by the horrific bushfires that have swept through our country. The road to rebuild will be long but as a nation we will: brick by brick, fence by fence. Bauer Media launched this campaign to help our neighbours in their time of need. Each week we will shine a spotlight on a town telling our generous readers how they can help, from the best fundraisers to donate to that specifically benefit the locals, to products they can buy from that town or region that support small businesses there. We’ll highlight the farmers who need fencing supplies, the schools which are short of books and pencils, the yoga school that needs mats or how to plan a getaway to the region when the time is right to bolster their local tourism industry. The Rebuild Our Towns campaign is centred on the fact that practical help doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Our love and thoughts go out to every person, but actions speak louder than words, so join us to make a difference and help our heartland heal.

styling with glass Consider this look your new take on nautical, featuring glass pieces in fluid shapes to represent water, raw ceramics evocative of the sand and turquoise accents to conjure up oceanic vibes. This look is best used with restraint in vignettes or tablescapes, and is especially apt for summer, but you can carry it through to cooler seasons by swapping in some heavier ceramics in warm, earthy tones. STYLE IT
bathroom wallpaper Do your research Most industry professionals consider vinyl wallpaper as the ideal choice for wet areas like bathrooms or laundries, but with the correct treatment, most materials will work. For instance, if you prefer the look and feel of paper or fabric wallpaper, consider hanging it away from direct splash zones like sinks or baths, or apply a protective varnish to ensure it will hold up to everything a bathroom can throw at it. When in doubt, do a thorough check of the manufacturing specifications to find out if the wallpaper is approved for wet areas. Ace the base To make sure your wallpaper doesn’t become mouldy and mildewy over time, first check that your bathroom has adequate ventilation from an extractor fan or window. Next, prep your walls with an anti-fungicide paste and mould-resistant adhesive to help your wallpaper hold up in this humid and moist environment and withstand the test of time.
Playful prints The right wallpaper prints will help create a bathroom full of whimsy that invites you and your guests to linger longer. Look for quirky motifs like haphazard polka dots, cacti or flamingos, or modern florals for a quick update that breathes life into an often overlooked space. Create impact Wallpaper is all about making a statement so don’t be afraid to get experimental. Wallpaper patterns in darker tones and big, bold graphics and prints can make a small room feel spacious by lending a sense of opulence to the space. Likewise, designs that feature vertical lines give the illusion of height, and horizontal prints can widen an otherwise cramped space. Lighten up If graphics aren’t your thing, create a calming environment by using subtle yet sophisticated textures. Choose a barely there pattern, such as a faux render or watercolour dots, to allow your fixtures and fittings to shine while still creating a dramatic effect. R

PAINT IT
outdoor furniture Quick, easy and affordable, painting your furniture will freshen up an alfresco space. Follow our guide to get the best results Assess the damage Depending on the state of your furniture, you may need to do some prep work first. Remove old, flaking paint with stripper or sandpaper, and give varnished items a rough sand to help the paint stick. Likewise, rust on metal pieces can be removed with a wire brush or sander, and wicker or cane will need a good clean with a soft brush and sugar soap solution. Decide on a paint type Gloss, satin and eggshell finishes all work well for timber, while spray paint gives an even finish to wicker, rattan and metal. Plastic furniture will need a special formulation that adheres to plastic. In all cases, ensure your paint is suitable for outside use, and also consider the climate where you live. Many paints have UV protection or anti-rust factors. Check the forecast Some weather conditions aren’t conducive to painting. Too hot and your paint may dry too fast, or too humid, and it will
take longer to dry, causing surface imperfections. Strong winds also make spray-painting difficult. Where possible, aim for a day that’s around 21 degrees, with humidity at 50 per cent or less. Plan ahead and, for obvious reasons, wait a few days after painting before using your furniture. To prime or not to prime This will be decided by the surface you’re working with and the type of paint you’re using. For instance, bare timber is quite porous and generally requires a primer to seal it before painting. If you’re using a brush or roller to paint, a primer is also worthwhile, to help achieve an even finish. But if you’re using spray paint? No primer required – hurrah! Keep it clean Painting is messy, so move any furniture, plants and rugs well away from your work area. Lay down drop sheets to prevent paint drips on your deck, garage floor or grass, too. And wear old clothes and a mask. R

JOIN FORCES Interior designer Lauren Li shares her top tips for choosing the right joinery for your needs
KITCHEN
Texture play V-groove cupboard doors and Moroccan tiles laid in a herringbone pattern add interest to the mostly white kitchen.
Social call The kitchen’s old granite benchtop was replaced with New York marble from G-Lux, while the splashback features Moroccan Bijmat tiles from Bespoke Tile & Stone (now Earp Bros). Neighbours call in regularly for a coffee, sitting at the counter on the Gubi 3D bar stools. @reallivingmag

Raspberry parade Wine-hued shelves tie in with an artwork in similar shades and hold owner Lisa’s cookbooks. A
In the know Plane Architectural Joinery built the kitchen, which features white V-groove joinery, 2-pac shelving and door handles in Dulux ‘Ripe Rhubarb’, which were customdesigned by Sisällä Interior Design. “Listen to your cabinetmaker!” Lauren urges. “They can suggest materials they’ve worked with or details they’ve created for other projects.”
Pull the other one When designing a kitchen, Lauren likes to include lots of drawers, rather than cupboards, to maximise storage. Cut-out handles are another interesting design feature.
IF YOU’RE ON THE LOOKOUT for clever ways to display and/or stash your things, this stunning home renovation by Lauren Li of Sisällä Interior Design is sure to provide plenty of inspo. Owners Lisa and David last renovated in the ’90s, and with their children now living out of home, they were ready for a spruce up. “Lisa is very social and enjoys cooking and entertaining, so our design revolved around this,” says Lauren. “We also took style cues from a treasured artwork, to keep that warm, familiar feeling in the new renovation.” Lauren worked with Rob Cox from Plane Architectural Joinery to create custom joinery for her clients’ specific needs. In the kitchen, the island bench has been extended to incorporate a wine fridge, with raspberry-toned shelves at the front to house Lisa’s cookbooks. A study nook between the kitchen and living space can be closed off when needed using bi-fold doors. And more steel shelving in the living area accommodates the TV and all of its wiring without making a feature of it, allowing the books and ceramics to shine. So what’s the difference between custom joinery and shop-bought? “Custom is designed to fit snugly within your space to maximise storage, whereas with ‘off the shelf’ or flat-pack storage you’re limited to the sizes available,” Lauren says. Working with a cabinetmaker or joiner also allows you to add “one-of-a-kind” details, such as the red handles on the kitchen cupboards and study drawers, and gives you access to a greater range of material options. “For this project, we combined stone, coloured 2-pac and steel, however, material selection does depend on the homeowner and their needs,” Lauren says. “Do your research and consider whether the materials (and their maintenance) sits well with your lifestyle and budget.” She also argues that “the more the better” doesn’t always apply to storage. “It can be tempting to cram as much storage as possible into a space, but it could end up feeling really closed in; sometimes we don’t need to store as much stuff as we think.” Put some thought into how you want the room to function, and use a little foresight: “Joinery should last around 20 years, so it’s really important to consider your needs now and in the future,” Lauren says. HOW TO EARN & SAVE
money moves to make Financially Fit Females ambassador Effie Zahos proves that money can buy you happiness, if you know how to spend it the right way
2
1
take back your time You can always make more money but you can’t extend time, unless of course, you buy it back. The idea here is that by spending money on convenience and buying back your time, you’re able to use the gained hours for things that actually make you happy. Of course, this only works if you have the extra money, which means you’ve probably worked harder and longer to pay for the convenience. It can be a vicious cycle so do tread carefully. As a rule of thumb, if you’re outsourcing your cleaning, cooking, or whatever else you don’t have time for (or don’t like), make sure that your hourly pay rate is at least double the cost of outsourcing.

pay it forward Helping family or friends in need or donating to a charity could be the missing link to finding your financial happiness. According to Good2Give, a not-for-profit organisation that simplifies the donation process for businesses, helping others activates the pleasure systems in our brain that can boost self-esteem and our sense of purpose. There are many ways to give that don’t require cash. You could support a fundraiser, donate blood or simply bring in a homemade treat to surprise somebody at work.
Carry on George ‘Four Tone’ brown bag, $290, Monk House Design.
3
buy piece of mind One of the greatest things you can buy with your money is financial freedom. If you have bad debt, like money owing on credit cards or personal loans, you should focus on getting rid of these first. The savings alone are sure to give you a big boost in happiness. Let’s say you owe $5000 on a credit card at 19 per cent. By sticking to minimum repayments you would pay over $15,000 in interest and take 38 years to repay it. Up your repayments by just $50 per week and you’ll save thousands and clear the debt in just two years and eight months. Building up an emergency fund is also a good idea. Typically you should have enough cash stashed away to cover up to six months’ worth of expenses. It may sound a little daunting, but even a beginner’s fund with a couple of hundred dollars in it is better than nothing.

create memories Chances are, reminiscing about your last holiday still brings a smile to your face – certainly more so than that lamp you bought six months ago. Research shows that “things” don’t make us as happy as experiences do, at least in the long run. Best of all, experiences tend to build happiness pre and post event. And because they’re often shared with family and friends, there’s a double whammy of happiness!

buy breathing space Ten pairs of designer shoes won’t make you happy (not forever, anyway), but 10 pairs of underwear could, if it means you’re not stuck in a constant laundry loop. If you’ve got the extra cash, buying some simple items, like an extra pair of something you wear every day, can afford you some much needed breathing space. Just don’t abuse this spending rule, as it can backfire by depleting your savings. R

The Proper Hotel’s latest LA outpost has top design cred, seriously good food and the only rooftop pool deck in town WHAT DO YOU GET when Kelly Wearstler, one of the coolest designers in the biz, takes on the interiors of a new hotel in one of LA’s coolest coastal cities? The Santa Monica Proper – an achingly stylish destination that’s so darn zeitgeist-y even the locals want to stay. Just a few blocks away from Santa Monica Beach, the Proper Hotel is within walking distance of the buzzing downtown district’s cafes, boutiques and the famous farmer’s market (where celebrities and chefs buy their fruit and veg). Its 271 suites, three dining spaces, gym, rooftop pool and Ayurvedic spa are spread across two wings – one occupies a 1928 Spanish Mission Revival style building, the other is a contemporary addition by Howard Laks Architects. The harmonic juxtaposition between the original landmark’s elegant angles and the new structure’s curved facade is a fitting overture for the hotel interiors. While the timber archways, tiled columns and elaborately laid parquetry floors are the epitome of luxury, Kelly’s signature fusion of material, texture and shape makes it feel effortless. Grounded in a warm neutral scheme ranging from sandy blonde to sun-tanned hues, rooms in the historic wing feature retro-style floral wallpaper and Art Deco lighting, while suites in the new wing are more modern with exposed concrete walls and mid-century furniture. It’s certainly eclectic, but the indoor palms, poolside cabanas and custom art and ceramics by local creatives embody California’s laidback lifestyle. For the complete SoCal sensorial experience, we suggest dining at Onda, the Mexican-influenced restaurant run by two sought-after female chefs. It doesn’t get much cooler than that. A Plant based Transitional archways and carefully arranged furniture create intimate zones throughout the Palma lobby lounge. The all-day menu is much like the decor – natural and organic – but you can order cocktails and charcuterie, too. real living
