FROM THE EDITOR This month NEW BEGINNINGS…

PHOTOGRAPHS BILL KINGSTON/HEARST MAGAZINES UK; MATTHEW MONFREDI

N

ew year, fresh start - a phrase I’ve used many times as a writer and editor, but one that has real meaning for me in 2020. We moved home last November so that my 81-year-old mother could come and live with us. Our new house needs some loving care and attention, plus a small extension - or annexe – before Mum arrives. So, in addition to liaising with architects and builders, I’ve been spending the past few weeks poring over paint charts, kitchen websites and bathroom brochures. The big question in my mind is whether or not I should embrace decorating with colour (there seems to be so much of it around) or stick with my love of all things monochrome. I put the question to HB contributor and interior designer Andrew Griffiths and his reply was inspiring: ‘Look at the clothes you wear and the pictures you save on Instagram,’ he said. ‘There will probably be some outstanding colour themes. These are what you’re naturally drawn to, and should influence your decorating choices.’ So I did just that and quickly observed that black, grey, white, stone and taupe dominated both my wardrobe and my Instagram feed, with a smattering of plaster pink, petrol blue and khaki appearing regularly in the interior pics I’d saved. With this in mind, I’ve started to pull together moodboards for each room, incorporating all of these hues. It’s been a joyful and useful process. Colour is such an emotive subject and it makes sense to immerse ourselves in the shades that make us feel good about our surroundings. It’s with this in mind that the HB team has produced our special supplement, Colour Your Home Happy. Packed full of inspiration and guidance on how to choose and use colour with confidence, it’s proof that whatever your approach, you can create a beautiful living space!

STYLE MAKER WHO Naomi Paul SPECIALISES IN Crocheted lighting AVAILABLE FROM naomipaul.co.uk

PERFECTLY FORMED Naomi Paul’s exquisite crocheted pendant lights are works of art that bring calm and beauty into a room

here have been several ‘lampshade’ moments in Naomi Paul’s creative life. But the one that set her on the path to becoming a globally sought-after maker of wondrously sculptural lighting happened when, in order to keep her job at the Royal College of Art, she said she could crochet… and then had to ask her mother to teach her virtually overnight. ‘My mother is a maker and creator who can turn her hand to anything practical. When I was living away from home as a student, she taught me to knit over the phone while I was sat practising with a pair of chopsticks!’ says Naomi. But it was her mother’s crash-course in crochet that allowed constructive-textile-trained Naomi to hold on to her position at the Royal College of Art. This lead to her working with a master in fashion and crocheting a ballgown. ‘After that, I was commissioned to crochet a piece based on a Moroccan cascading pendant form. I drew some simple silhouettes and then, working as a potter might on a wheel, sculpted as I went. The nature of crochet is very organic in the way the stitches grow. I made a small collection of lampshades based on the same technique and the design was picked up by Liberty London.’ Breathtaking in its fluid form, Naomi’s light-as-air, uniformly-stitched crocheted lighting is prized by hotels

‘ The na ture of crochet is very organi c in the wa y the sti tches grow' and stylish homeowners around the world. Once the only maker, she now works with her small team of highly skilled crafters in a studio at the edge of a nature reserve near London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. ‘It is very quiet and calm in the studio, and the light is lovely – it’s an old industrial bakery with a huge skylight. Most of the time the makers listen to podcasts that have the sort of rhythm and subject matter perfect for crocheting and creating the right tension. When the team worked, just briefly, at home, I found I could tell when they had been watching or listening to something intense as it would come out in the stitches!’ Naomi laughs. In the main, her palette is restrained, mineral and soothing: ‘We have statement colours for accent lighting, but neutrals for bedside or reading-room lights, which we make in calmer tones,’ says Naomi. ‘The palette has evolved, too,’ she says. ‘I started by using surplus yarn and a lot of it came from Missoni, so there were quite strong colours. In time however, I progressed to virgin yarn and I was able to choose the palette I wanted – colours I like to live with that feel warm, inviting and lasting. I try not to look at trends.’ As a result, Naomi’s work is wonderfully timeless, and more than just a little switched on. HB

OPPOSITE Naomi in her London studio, where she works with her talented team THIS PAGE Every piece is entirely made by hand. Naomi chooses bold hues for accent lighting, but uses soothing neutrals for bedside and reading lights House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 13

BEDFOLK

TELL US HOW BEDFOLK BEGAN… JO Nick and I both have backgrounds in the interiors industry, and, at the time, we were renovating our home. We’ve always found it easy to source great homeware, but bedding was a real sticking point. We wanted it to be good quality, and affordable, but the shopping experience felt confusing. You’re often choosing between rows of plastic-wrapped sets, so you don’t really know what you’re buying. NICK We didn’t know the first thing about running a business and were more used to thinking about products from a user perspective than the manufacturing side. We were also just about to get married and ended up spending our honeymoon in Portugal touring textile mills and learning the processes! That’s where the journey really started. WITH SO MANY BEDDING BRANDS TO CHOOSE FROM, WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS UNIQUE? NICK We only sell three styles of cotton bedding – Relaxed, Classic and Luxe – each with a different weave and finish, so customers just need to decide how they like their bedding to look and feel, rather than choosing between different thread counts and other confusing factors. JO Our ethos is ‘buy less but buy well’. We want people to enjoy a high-quality product in a timeless colour palette that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. Not only does that reduce waste generated by outdated designs and poor quality, but it also means our customers can update their bedroom easily by layering our products. HOW ARE YOU MAKING BEDFOLK SUSTAINABLE? NICK We know that making textiles uses valuable resources, but we really try to minimise our environmental impact wherever possible. The offcuts from the manufacturing process are turned into cotton 20 housebeautiful.com/uk

Top left The Classic bedding bundle, including a duvet cover and two pillowcases, costs from £79 Above The ethos is simple with just three styles to choose from Left Nick and Jo with their dog Juju

bags that we use as packaging – there’s absolutely no plastic involved. Our bedding is also certified Oeko-Tex, which is a rigorous standard – higher than organic – covering the finished product. It takes into account everything from growing to manufacturing, ensuring your bedding doesn’t contain any chemicals or synthetics that might be harmful to you or the planet. SLEEP CONTINUES TO BE A HOT TOPIC OF CONVERSATION. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2020 AND BEYOND? NICK Until quite recently, bedding was a bit of an overlooked product mainly, I think, due to the uninspiring shopping experience. Now, more and more people are mindful of choosing the right products to enhance their sleep. Recognising that we spend a third of our lives in bed can be a real wake-up call! JO And even if you don’t get that sought-after eight hours, elevating your sleep experience can help your overall wellbeing. We’ll be introducing a couple of darker colours to complete the ‘core’ range that will all go seamlessly together. We’re also working on quilt designs to add to the range in autumn. bedfolk.com

While shopping for their new home, husband and wife team Nick and Jo James found it tricky to find the right bedding for the right price. Taking matters into their own hands, in 2018 they launched their own stylishly uncomplicated bedding brand

Rachael (below right) and Alex sell a range of handcrafted products online and in their new bricks-and-mortar shop in Manchester’s trendy Chorlton

SHOP OF THE MONTH

OBJECT: SHOP, STAYCATION, SOCIAL In 2014, husband-and-wife team Alex and Rachael Otterwell turned their experiences of travelling the world into an online lifestyle and homeware brand that quickly found a physical presence too. In late 2019 the couple relocated their shop to a larger premises a short walk away in the hope of offering more to their local community. Rachael tells us more… WHY DID YOU OPEN A BRICKS-AND-MORTAR SHOP? Object started as an online store in 2014, launched from our bedroom and operated around our day jobs. After trading at a local market for almost a year, we could see there was a demand for the products we were selling. So, we decided to find a permanent home with more control over the store’s design and brand image.

INTERVIEW BY ALICIA FORD

TELL US ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS AND IN-STORE EVENTS YOU OFFER AT OBJECT… We host everything from woodcarving and ring-making to supper clubs and blogging workshops. The idea was to provide a creative outlet and build a community. It’s a great way to promote our retail business and get to know our customers. HAVING MOVED PREMISES AND REBRANDED LAST AUTUMN, WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS FOR OBJECT NOW? It was important to us to create a multifaceted business, combining products and services that stimulate us creatively and give our business better opportunities for financial security. In terms of the rebrand, we felt that relocating the store called for a new chapter in the aesthetic too. While we work with many Scandinavian brands

and adore the pared-back style, it doesn’t fully represent our company. Over the past few years, Alex and I have travelled around the west coast of America, and have become very inspired by the nature, climate and culture in California. We decided to introduce these influences into our branding, using colour and texture. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH YOUR NEW STAYCATION VENTURE ‘OBJECT: THE APARTMENT’? We love taking short breaks in addition to a longer holiday after the busy Christmas period. This allows us to get some downtime and find new inspiration. Mostly, we opt to stay in small guesthouses and live like locals. We’ve been influenced so much by all the interesting places we’ve stayed in the past decade and we wanted to put all our ideas into practice – and so Object: The Apartment was born. It’s a luxury self-catering space where you’ll find our products perfectly placed to enjoy and experience. From the moment guests arrive, we want them to instantly feel at home. They’ll receive a hamper filled with produce from Chorlton-based businesses, in addition to a guide on what’s happening in the local area, from yoga classes and live music, to nature walks and even where to find the best negronis! A TOUCH OF GOLD One couple called on the expertise of an interior designer friend to help inject colour and character into their family home WORDS CIARA ELLIOTT PHOTOGRAPHY FIONA MURRAY

hen Victoria and Simon Gold began married life, it was in a two-bedroom top-floor Victorian flat in an area of north London they both loved. The period home had stunning views across the city but, sadly, was lacking in living space. After the birth of their first daughter Selma, the couple found themselves in need of a new home for their growing family. ‘So off I went, buggy in tow, to find our dream home,’ says Victoria. ‘We were set on a four-bedroom house with period features in the area where we already lived. But the reality of finding the perfect house with fireplaces, stained-glass windows, cornicing, ornate mosaic tiles and an outdoor space for the kids to play in was turning into a bit of a pipe dream. Property prices were so high, we started to realise we were going to have to take on a project.’ With the search beginning to slow, Victoria decided to widen her net, finally settling on a property a little further out than they had originally wanted. It had been extended and reconfigured, but had the space they needed and was a blank canvas, so they would be able to make it their own. ‘The previous owners were pragmatic people and had already altered the layout to maximise living space,’ explains Victoria. ‘They had extended upwards and outwards, making the

property larger and brighter, had built in hidden storage and laid new flooring, and installed a modern bathroom and kitchen with high-end appliances. But in doing this, they had ripped out all of the property’s original features; what we needed to do was put the character back in.’ With no building work to worry about, the couple were able to use their budget on getting the decoration exactly as they wanted it. ‘The month we moved in, we kick-started the interior design,’ says Victoria. ‘My close friend Barbara Romani, who lives on a neighbouring street, was about to launch her interior design business, so the timing was perfect. She knows our family intimately – our interests, likes and dislikes, and way of living, and she has creative vision, passion and flair, so we embarked on a creative journey together.’ They began with the areas of the house they knew would be used most – the living room, dining room and kitchen, followed by the bedrooms. ‘Phasing the work was crucial for us, as it meant we always had somewhere to sleep as well as the room to store things, all without getting in the way of the work. It also had the added benefit

of helping us to think about how to best use the spaces in the future,’ explains Victoria. Both Victoria and Barbara are firm believers in getting the maximum use out of all areas in a home. So, converting one of the reception rooms back into a dining area using a Crittallstyle divider to zone it off, was the obvious thing to do. ‘We didn’t need two lounge areas side by side’, says Victoria. Similarly, the couple decided to turn their spare room into an open workspace, rather than have a fourth bedroom. ‘We don’t have guests regularly enough to justify dedicating a whole room to it.’ Victoria says some of her favourite things about the refurbishment are the unexpected touches. ‘I love the hidden mice in Selma’s mural and the brass woodland creature handles on her cupboards. I’m also so proud of the workmanship applied to the geometric design in Ezra’s room. Our bedroom is probably my favourite space of all, though - it has a romantic, botanical feel and the lighting bounces off the walls to create different hues and moods. This is my calm space, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.’ HB FOR STORE DETAILS SEE WHERE TO BUY PAGE

oday, many of the visitors who cross the Tamar Bridge into Cornwall come in search of the county’s beautiful scenery, but in the 19th century it was the promise of the ore-rich earth that tempted optimistic incomers. Prospectors and engineers arrived to charter, dig and drill deep into the region’s rock, hoping it would yield subterranean treasure. Today, the tower of The Stack is one of the many reminders of this chapter of Cornish industrial history, standing in a landscape that’s now more devoted to dairy, stock and agricultural farming. This Grade II-listed building in the Fal Estuary once housed the power supply for the shortlived New Terras mine, its thick walls built to withstand the juddering of the steam-mechanised beam engine that sat within. It was the handiwork of the ambitious Michell brothers of Redruth, who prospected several mines in the area for metals, but the quarry proved unprofitable so, in 1894, they cut their losses and wound up business, leaving the tower behind. In its latest incarnation, the building’s decorative style recognises the structure’s hard-working roots, and dovetails them with gentler design touches. ‘The architecture and history were a big part of the property’s appeal, so it felt right to take that as our first cue for the interior,’ says Sarah Stanley, who bought The Stack three years ago. ‘We wanted to look back at the building’s origins and reflect its industrial story.’ In the main living spaces, spread over five floors, surfaces hint at the heritage; weathered wood is set against metalwork, while a base layer of granite brick peeps out from beneath smooth render. ‘Although it was designed with function in mind, the house also has pretty arched windows and doorways,’ Sarah says. After buying the property, she decided to let her friend and colleague, Jess Clark, take charge of the interior design. Jess, too, discovered that this was a house that defies convention. ‘I knew my inspiration would spring from the setting, but in some instances I also found myself being led by the building,’ she says. The previous owners had peeled back the paint and paper in the hallway and left it as a rough and ready surface: ‘I rather liked the effect – a reminder of the many layers of life that have been lived within these walls.’ When builders started to strip the woodchip wallpaper in the largest bedroom, a similar mottled faded-pink effect began to show through from underneath. ‘I’m not usually a fan of pink, but the texture echoed the patina in the hallway, so I left it. It almost felt as if the house were presenting its own solutions,’ says Jess. The building’s new hub is the kitchen and dining room on

the ground floor. In here, stainless-steel worktops mix with the original nail-studded beams and rustic cladding made from old scaffolding planks. Vintage finds, such as a butcher’s block, were added by Sarah and Jess, while the farmhouse table is a marriage of old and new sections. ‘I rescued the legs and base from a skip and a carpenter made a new top from scaffolding planks bound with iron,’ explains Jess. Both love to spend time sifting through local charity shops and auctions for furniture and accessories. ‘An entire room in my home is full of weird and wonderful finds, just waiting for the right place,’ Sarah continues, noting that Cornwall used to be a good hunting ground for old and characterful furniture. ‘More recently, though, reclamation yards have raised their prices, and dealers from further afield are starting to bulk-buy at the auctions, which makes it hard if you’re just after one or two items.’ Her favourite haunt is a hospice charity shop in Penryn. ‘I’ve found some real treasures there, from stacks of creaky leather-bound books to a sheaf of old nautical charts.’ The sofa in the upstairs living room is an example of the way in which Jess brings new life to old furniture. ‘I found an Ercol sofa frame on the Freecycle website,’ she says. ‘It needed new webbing, which I worked out how to fit, and then I added some plump velvet cushions – far more decadent than the original upholstery would have been.’ The building’s unusual architecture also made it tricky to get some of the larger pieces of furniture inside. ‘At one point, we had a comedy situation with one man sitting on another’s shoulders, hoisting pieces through a window – while a large mirror had to be taken apart and reassembled inside,’ says Jess. In the bedrooms, the decor hints at the property’s back story in a more subtle way. A metal sliding door between a second bedroom and the living space has a warm, hand-worn character, as does a battered iron-handled chest in the children’s room at the top of the house. In the main bedroom, a headboard made from carved Moroccan shutters creates an escapist mood: ‘Although they are from a distant country, the floral motifs are a reminder of the wildflower meadows just outside the window.’ Several paintings by local artist John O’Carroll, who applies beeswax and pigment directly to his work, hang on the walls of the house. ‘I love the way his landscapes feel both empty and yet full of presence,’ Jess says. An apt choice for a house that has itself been reworked for a calmer life, but is still full of references to its industrial past. THE MODERNIST HOME Innovative design and a sense of community drew one couple to this iconic masterpiece in north London WORDS DOMINIC BRADBURY/INSIDE FEATURES PHOTOGRAPHY RACHAEL SMITH/INSIDE FEATURES

t’s the sense of community at Highpoint as much as its design that captivates architect Sandra Coppin and her family. They have made their home in a striking duplex apartment in Highpoint II, the second of the Highgate apartment buildings designed by the pioneering Modernist architect Berthold Lubetkin in the 1930s. It is testament to Lubetkin’s design approach, which included communal gardens and a swimming pool, that Highpoint remains such a vibrant village in miniature, beloved by its residents. ‘I could say that it’s the architecture and the double-height space in our duplex that we love best, but the main draw for us is that feeling of belonging and assuming that we will grow old together here,’ says Sandra, who shares her home with husband, Nico de Beer, a design director in the bathroom industry, and their teenage children, Anna and Eva. ‘It does feel very special being here – it’s as though you are living in a 1930s movie.’ Sandra grew up in South Africa but moved to London to study at the Bartlett School of Architecture, where she met Nico. They lived in a studio flat in Shoreditch for a number of years, but with their first child on the way, they realised they needed more space. Highpoint is an iconic design project that Sandra studied in architecture class, never dreaming that one day she’d live

there. She and Nico initially bought a three-bedroom flat in Highpoint I in 2002. This was the first of Lubetkin’s two Highgate apartment buildings, commissioned by businessman Sigmund Gestetner, who was looking to offer affordable and well-designed modern housing for the workers at his office equipment company. Completed in 1935, Highpoint I is an H-shaped building with 60 apartments, which offers amazing views out across the city. But then Sandra and Nico began to outgrow Highpoint I and feared they would have to move again, but just in the nick of time, a much larger flat came up for sale in Highpoint II. ‘We were really loath to leave, and were away one weekend while there was a wedding party happening here in the garden,’ says Sandra. ‘While at the party, some Highpoint friends discovered that a duplex was coming onto the market and suddenly we got all these drunken texts, saying it’s okay, you can stay, we have found you a flat! It was all very emotional.’ The only drawback was Nico’s vertigo – induced by a hiking incident on a mountain trail some years ago - and the fact that the duplex is on the fifth and sixth floors. But when he heard that the original bathrooms and many other period elements were intact he couldn’t resist taking a look. The couple were hooked from the moment they saw it. It had a double-height living space that formed the heart of the home, with a balcony on one side and a dramatic spiral staircase on the other. ‘We loved it and Nico made me promise we’d never move again,’ says Sandra. ‘But we did find ourselves with a very demanding heritage restoration project.’ Lubetkin designed Highpoint II, completed in 1938, with 12 luxurious apartments including a penthouse for himself. The building had the best of everything, including hidden galley kitchens and separate entrances for servants. The previous owner had lived here for decades, so many original features were well preserved, with the exception of the kitchen, which had been replaced in the 1970s. Keen to reinstate one that was in keeping with Lubetkin’s original vision, Sandra began researching the archives to find as many period photographs, plans and specifications as she could. She designed a new galley kitchen full of space-saving, modern features, inspired by the period Lubetkin designs. Then she and Nico spent a big chunk of their budget renovating the bathrooms, drawing on specialists to bring them back to life. Sandra restored the statement staircase, and used colours throughout the duplex based on Le Corbusier’s Architectural Polychromy palette of 1931. The original dining room has become her home office and a base for her architectural practice, Coppin Dockray. Clients have included a number of other residents at Highpoint, who have also become firm friends. ‘There’s such a strong community here,’ says Sandra. ‘It really is a village in itself and the romantic idea of living in these communal Modernist gems appealed to us. You do get the feeling it was designed at a special moment in time, part of a very positive, brave view of the future. Our home feels like a very forward-looking and optimistic space, even though it was designed 85 years ago.’ HB Coppin Dockray Architecture & Design; coppindockray.co.uk

hen Devon and Jeff bought their Victorian apartment in 2012, they knew right away that they wanted to make some changes, but it took them five years to pluck up the courage to get started. ‘As soon as we moved in, we re-did the bathroom and carried out some cosmetic renovations, but aside from that, we lived in it quite nicely for the first five years,’ Devon recalls. Then, in 2017, with baby Gabriel on the way, the couple took the plunge and enlisted the help of Calum Duncan Architects to bring the flat in line with 21st-century living as well as give them the space they desired. ‘We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted to do,’ Devon recalls. ‘For example, we knew we wanted an open-plan living space and an ensuite bathroom, but to get that, we would have to change the layout of the entire flat. That’s where Calum really came into play; he offered a practical and clever design that would utilise the space we had in the most

effective way possible.’ The original layout consisted of a sitting room and a long, narrow bedroom at the front of the property, a spacious hallway with a bathroom and WC in the middle, and at the back was the kitchen and a second bedroom. ‘Calum suggested we merge the bedroom, sitting room and one of the hall cupboards at the front, bringing them together to create a modern kitchen/living/dining space, and have both bedrooms at the back of the property,’ explains Devon. The bathroom remained where it was and the old kitchen became the main bedroom, borrowing space from another hall cupboard to create an ensuite. ‘If I’d been left to my own devices, I would have removed all the cupboards in the hall,’ says Devon. ‘Thankfully, Calum pointed out how impractical that was, asking where we would put our ladders, ironing board and buggy. So we had a re-think.’ While two of the cupboards in the hall had been re-purposed, it was still ‘the hallway of many doors’ with little personality. So, with a bit of clever thinking, a wall of bookcases was built in the corridor to create a library feel,

which also included a small, useful desk space. ‘I came up with idea of installing a hidden door that accesses the bathroom in the hallway, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out,’ smiles Devon. As the ensuite is in the middle of the flat, there’s little natural light. ‘Calum came up with the perfect solution – a sliding door that sections off the WC making it private, while the bath area is left open to the bedroom and the light from the windows,’ Devon explains. ‘As first-timers, and with a project this complicated, we didn’t really know what we were doing. We were very lucky to have Calum, our architect, and Karl from Mott Joinery, who was our main contractor, to keep us on track and offer advice. There was a lot of balancing between form and function and sometimes function won out, especially when it came to the kitchen worktops. My first choice was white marble but then we thought about how we cook and eat. We’re vegetarians who eat a lot of turmeric-based curries – so white and porous is not a good combination! So we decided to go for concrete; it’s cool 90 housebeautiful.com/uk

and durable, and it’s a bit unexpected in a Victorian flat,’ says Devon. Eager to reference the property’s roots but not create a pastiche, the couple decided on a bespoke kitchen that would also maximise the proportions of the room. ‘Guy at Broad Workshop had already made the bookcases in the hallway and we were confident he could do what we wanted in the kitchen,’ says Devon. ‘To keep costs down, we bought Wickes carcasses and Guy built the kitchen around them.’ Devon was keen to include a blend of colours in the kitchen and did plenty of experimenting. ‘In the end, we used Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue on the base cabinets and Wevet on the wall units. All the walls had been replastered and I wanted to take advantage of the smooth, fresh surface by keeping them light, so they were painted in Farrow & Ball’s Blackened, while the island was painted in Black Blue to add contrast.’ The flat is still evolving but the everyday workings of the renovation have ticked all the boxes. ‘The flow of the flat is so much better than it was before and we seem to have more space as every inch is utilised.’ HB

PROPERTY LOW-CARBON BARN CONVERSION It’s hard to believe that just a couple of years ago, this striking timber- and aluminiumclad contemporary home was a battered old agricultural building in a cattle yard…

ow, Mayfield Barn, near Long Crendon in Buckinghamshire, is a high-spec, four-bedroom, low-carbon home for Lizzy and Patrick Begg, who both work for the National Trust, and their two teenage daughters. In 2019, it received a Federation of Master Builders’ Award for best Low Carbon Project. Designed by London and Home Counties architectural practice Holland Green, the house not only embodies sustainable building practices, but is also an outstanding example of a Class Q project. This is a form of Permitted Development that allows agricultural buildings to be converted to residential use without planning permission in England and Wales. The brief for award-winning builder Stuart Barr, of Oxfordshire-based Stuart Barr CDR, was to build a sustainable home with the lowest possible carbon footprint and minimal environmental impact. ‘We used ecofriendly

N

insulation and the house is clad in Thermowood and aluminium, which is sympathetic to the original structure,’ he explains. Much effort was spent making the £530,000 project super-airtight. The Class Q permission didn’t allow for the demolition of the barn’s original concrete-and-steel frame, so close attention had to be paid to addressing the ‘cold bridges’ by taping up joints. Also, rather than aiming for the unrealistic goal of achieving ultra-high Passivhaus standards in what had originally been a working building, the low-carbon approach focused on re-using materials, which reduces energy output in manufacture, transport and waste, and using the best in eco-technology and bio-efficient waste disposal. The barn has huge steel-framed tripleglazed windows and doors, underfloor heating, an air-source heat pump and provision for solar panels. The interior has House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 93

polished-concrete floors, cabinetry and furniture with ultra-low levels of formaldehyde, and high-grade plywood chosen to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This all chimed with Patrick and Lizzy’s own philosophies as ardent conservationists and supporters of a low-carbon lifestyle; Lizzy is head of environmental practices at the National Trust and Patrick is outdoors and natural resources director. ‘Lizzy and Patrick were my first-ever customers 17 years ago, and we’d stayed in touch,’ says Stuart. ‘They kept horses nearby and were offered the barns by the farmer who previously owned them.’ And he can testify to the project’s success as he lives next door with his family in Mayfield’s twin barn: ‘They asked if I’d like to buy a barn, and that’s how we got started. The Mayfield build was truly collaborative, with everyone pulling together to achieve Patrick and Lizzy’s vision for a sustainable family home.’ HB 94 housebeautiful.com/uk

PROPERTY LOW-CARBON BARN CONVERSION

HOW IT WORKS This construction method reduces emissions of damaging carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The intention in the design of a low-carbon building is to eliminate carbon emissions as far as possible, from its production, transport and use of materials, to the energy consumed by those who will live there. ‘Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases emitted when we consume energy, through the burning of fossil fuels, to power factories, warehouses, offices, planes, cars, lorries and homes,’ says Dominic Burbridge from the Carbon Trust. ‘The UK government has committed to net zero carbon-dioxide emissions by 2050 and a big part of this will be decarbonising our built environment.’ Building materials are likely to account for more than 50 per cent of lifetime carbon-dioxide emissions in a traditional build, says Dominic. ‘But clever design, specification and procurement of materials can significantly reduce this.’ Sustainable timber-frame construction is relatively low-impact, and building products such as blocks, roof tiles and cement with a high recycled content are available. Suppliers increasingly have information on the carbon footprint of their products in the form of an Environmental Product Declaration.

A LOW-CARBON BUILD For mortgage purposes, a low-carbon barn conversion is treated like any other self-build. Look at the Ecology Building Society (ecology.co.uk) and Buildstore Mortgage Services (buildstore.co.uk) for specialist financing. However, if you intend to install renewable energy, your project may be eligible for support from the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive, which offers financial rewards for those investing in renewable technologies in England, Wales and Scotland. For instance, a detached four-bedroom dwelling in Yorkshire could potentially receive £2,600 annually in payments if the homeowners install a ground-source heat pump*. CLEVER ZONING Trudy has separated different spaces by choosing darker shades in the food prep area, with a nude pink reserved for the cosy seating spot

Trudy Cross, who runs homeware company Tin Design, lives in an Edwardian terraced house in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, with her husband Barry and their children, Amelie, 15, and Joseph, 13 Tell us what was wrong with the original kitchen It was small, dingy and just not fit for purpose, given we’re a busy family of four with two dogs! You couldn’t see the garden directly from the kitchen either, which was something I’d wanted. Also, the dining room was separate so we ended up spending evenings straining to hear what was happening in the next room – it wasn’t very sociable. And the dining room and utility area were dark – this can often be the case with

terraced houses, but by knocking down a couple of walls we found we were able to create somewhere with plenty of space and light. How did you want to be able to use the room? I was keen to create a large family area where we could all move around freely, without tripping over the dogs. The idea was to be able to cook and eat in there too, with a decent seating area where the kids, or anyone else, could chill while meals were being prepared. I also wanted a view of the garden from the kitchen – and to be able to see right through to the garden from the front of the house. What was your timescale? As we were going to be without a kitchen, the job had to be done as swiftly as possible, but without cutting corners. It took 10 weeks which, considering the scale of the work, was excellent, although at the time it seemed to go on forever. We weren’t able to move out during the work so I cobbled together a makeshift kitchen in the living room, complete with camping stove, but we did eat out quite a bit. The dust was unbelievable. It travelled throughout the house despite our best House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 99

MAKING PLANS

With three rooms knocked into one, it’s now possible to see to the back garden from the front of the house. The linear nature of the layout is minimised by zoning the various functions within the space into food preparation, eating and seating areas. A kitchen island maximises preparation surfaces, while still allowing a flow of traffic around the room.

TALL STORY A bank of floor-to-ceiling cupboards maximises storage and does away with the dust trap on the top of units

attempts to seal off the work area. It got everywhere and seemed to settle for weeks. But we gritted out teeth and got on with it! Who was in charge and what did the structural changes entail? We used local builders who’d been recommended. I project managed it with them, and ensured the work met all building regulation standards. Taking down the walls between the kitchen and dining room and the kitchen and utility room were the main structural changes and were more problematic – and expensive – than expected as we had to put in extra steel to support the chimney breast upstairs. On top of that, the rooms had to be replumbed, rewired and replastered, and a boiler was fitted. We also laid a new floor and installed a side window and back doors. Were there any compromises? I’d wanted a wall of full-height units, but it meant pulling down a chimney breast, which was major work. We’d also have needed a Party Wall Agreement, so decided against it as it would have delayed the project. I got my cupboards, but behind some of them is the chimney breast so a few of the units are only deep enough for a cup! It works well though as I’m quite small and hate having to reach into deep cupboards.

FURNITURE Did you have any disasters? The concrete island was quite a mission! The designers ended up pouring the concrete twice as the whole island moved and bowed with the weight the first time round. And it took a week to dry, which held everything up further. Also, it wasn’t fun running upstairs to wash up in the bath! Then our bespoke back doors were delayed so we were in semi-darkness for a few weeks until they arrived. How would you describe your style? Very eclectic. I love mixing new with old, contemporary pieces and antiques. I’ve also got a massive crush on pink and green used together. I’d gone for a dark ceiling in the living room and loved it so I had the same in the kitchen, but to ensure it didn’t overpower the room, I kept the walls and cupboards white. Anything you’d change? In an ideal world, taking the chimney breast out would have given us deeper storage cupboards but, as I’ve said, they’d be harder to reach into. What we have is perfect – I’m really delighted with it. 102 housebeautiful.com/uk

GOOD BUDGE TING

SHOP THE LOOK

With a bit of planning you can consider a number of ways of cutting down on costs…

1

Finding the money for renovations is hard and compromise is often needed, so I always encourage clients to write down every single thing they want from their project at the start, including all the ‘money is no object’ stuff on the list. Then, once you have the complete picture, it’s easier to cut things out and nip more extreme ideas in the bud before you start, rather than getting carried away mid-project and running out of money. Limiting structural work will keep costs down, so work with an architect or interior space planner to come up with some creative ways of doing this. For example, choose half-open walls instead of full removal, or install archways or glass panels to bring in light. Turn large, immovable items into features; for example, build neat cupboards into alcoves or paint a chimney breast with chalkboard paint to use as a family noticeboard. Project managing the work yourself will cut costs, but you’ll need to have a great relationship with your builder and will have to make regular site visits. If you don’t know much about the building process, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Making decisions when you haven’t fully understood something can lead to problems later on, or a result you aren’t happy with. Living on site during the works is a major cost-cutting exercise, but this can be challenging, especially if you have children. Kitchen and bathroom renovations are the most disruptive, so set up a temporary kitchen in one of your rooms before everything has been ripped out. If you have access to water, a kettle and a microwave, you’ll be surprised how much you can put up with. And if you are having your bathroom done, invest in a gym membership or rely on nearby friends and family so you can shower. Prepping your home will be key – for example, put plastic sheeting over doors to seal off each room will stop dust from getting in.

SPACE SOLUTIONS A large mirror above the freestanding bath helps the room feel bigger and brighter

Ruth Douglass, who works in PR, lives with her husband Tim, an IT specialist, and their children Freya,12, and Rory, eight, in a four-bedroom house in Altrincham, Cheshire. The bathroom was part of a whole-house refurbishment Describe the original bathroom… It was very 1980s! We’d fallen for the house because of the lovely area as well as the potential to extend and add value, but nothing inside had been updated for decades. There were shiny blue wall tiles, fussy curtains and a horrible lino floor. The WC, which was next door, was decorated to match. The bathroom had a big basin and panelled bath, and it all felt cramped, dark and old-fashioned.

What were your first thoughts for the design? My aim was for a smart, modern bathroom with a stylish hotel feel, as I wanted to keep a clean, contemporary look running throughout the house. This is our main family bathroom, so I was keen to make it as large and light as possible. Knocking through the WC and combining the two spaces made sense, as it would give us extra room and a much more up-to-date, user-friendly layout. Did you want any particular features? A freestanding statement bath was top priority – I’ve always wanted one. I also really fancied a wet-room-style walk-in shower, similar to the ones you see in hotels. I had in mind a very simple glass partition and a tiled floor rather than the traditional shower tray and aluminiumframed cubicle. Although I love the pared-back look, I was taken with the idea of patterned tiles to add interest and individuality. How did the planning process go? Tim and I worked out the layout together, using some free design software called SmartDraw. With the wall gone, we were left with an House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 105

WALLS AND FLOOR Large-scale tiles work for both walls and floor, creating a seamless, space-enhancing effect

FREESTANDING BATH A sleek softly curved shape echoes the vanity unit’s rounded lines and understated style

‘After almost a year with the old bathroom and no shower, I’m thrilled with my fabulous new space. It works for everyone and it’s so lovely that friends joke about staying here just to enjoy the beautiful bathroom.’

oblong room, giving us several options. We kept the bathroom entrance where it was and blocked up the door into the WC to create the shower area. I didn’t want to skimp on the size of either the bath or shower, but I also liked the idea of having a mirror above the basin. There wasn’t enough wall space, so we looked at placing the bath under the window instead. In the end, we kept the bath and basin in the same positions so we could use the existing plumbing, but added a large mirror over the bath, which worked really well. Where did you source the main components? As it was such a big outlay, I was unsure about ordering online without being able to see things first, so we went to Bathroom Takeaway’s Manchester showroom. They offered a great selection of high quality products at good prices, and speedy delivery once we’d chosen everything. I did buy all the tiles online though, which was a bit of a risk. When they arrived, I was really happy with them. Did any problems arise during the process? Being without a family bathroom was difficult, but our small 106 housebeautiful.com/uk

UNDERFLOOR HEATING Timer-controlled, electric underfloor heating is economical to run and feels really luxurious

downstairs shower room had already been fitted, so we managed. Researching and choosing all the components probably took more time than anything else, but once everything arrived, the whole bathroom was finished in about a week. The only hitch was when we realised there just wasn’t quite enough room to attach the support bracket for our wall-hung loo. Fortunately there was no problem exchanging it for a floor-mounted version of the same style, which fits perfectly. Tell us about the finishing touches… The patterned tiles in the shower are the first thing you see and they make quite a statement, so I didn’t feel we needed too many accessories. That said, I did want a pop of colour and contrast, so I’ve added a lovely bright blue, geometric-design blind, which made a big difference. We’ve also got colour-changing spotlights in the ceiling, which are just a bit of fun. Tim’s very into technology, so he’s looking at getting music and radio streamed in the bathroom, too, which will be the icing on the cake.

AMA ZING SPACE If you’re planning to renovate, combining a separate loo and bathroom or moving it into an unused spare room is a great idea. However, if knocking down walls and changing the layout of your home isn’t an option, there are other ways you can make your bathroom feel bigger. INTERIOR DESIGN SALLIE CHATER Founder and director of her own interior design company, Interiors at 58, Sallie believes in creating luxurious, elegant and original schemes at affordable prices

1

Furniture Choosing a wall-mounted vanity basin will ensure there’s plenty of visible floor space, which will immediately make the room feel larger. And the same is true if you opt for a freestanding bath on legs, rather than one that’s fully panelled. You could up the wow factor with a metallic tub. Chrome, nickel and copper all look stunning and their shiny surfaces will reflect the floor tiles, helping to create an illusion of endless square-footage!

2

3 4

Tiles Using the same tiles on all of the walls will give a seamless effect that will help the room look larger. The fewer visual transitions between products there are, the simpler, cleaner and more expansive the room will feel. Another tile trick is to use a ‘shower former’ or wet room tray and cover it in the same tiles as the walls. This will not only create a high-end, luxurious scheme but will trick the eye into seeing a bigger area. Mirrors and reflective surfaces A clever use of mirrors can make a huge difference in a smaller space. Don’t limit yourself to having just a small one above the basin – think big! You could fill the entire wall behind the sink or bath with a bespoke mirror, which will open up the room and create a dramatic focal point. Finally, mirrored shelves are perfect for displaying pretty products. They will also bounce light around the room as well as make the most of the space you have!

INSPIRING PL ACES UTILITY ROOMS

WASH DAY SOLUTIONS Ah, a utility room - we all long for one, don’t we? Somewhere to put the laundry out of the way and far from sight. And with some clever design and a little imagination, it’s possible to create a smart utility area or laundry room in even the smallest space

114 housebeautiful.com/uk

WO RK IT If you’re lucky enough to have a utility room, then it needs to work hard to be efficient. Tall cupboards are useful for storing the ironing board and vacuum cleaner and you’ll need places to stow detergent, fabric conditioner and the iron. You should also consider flat surfaces for sorting and folding, with open shelving above for dry towels and other laundry. As washing machines can be noisy, ensure the door can be closed and make use of this space with hooks for hanging laundry and peg bags.

PERFECT PLANNING The ultimate utility room, this light and airy space has plentiful cupboards, a large marble sink, open shelves and a traditional Sheila Maid, which can be pulled up and out of the way. The Classic English Utility Room, from £10,000, Devol >

I N A S MALL SPACE If you aren’t blessed with a lot of space, create a utility room in a nook, a cupboard or, with some clever planning, in your bathroom. Stacking appliances is a great way to save space, while a combined washer dryer means you only have to house one appliance rather than two. • Open shelving, rather than closed cupboards, will make the area feel less closed in, giving the illusion of more room. • If you don’t have the space to assemble an ironing board, look for a smaller one that attaches to the wall, pull out from a drawer, or hang over the back of a door. You can also buy ironing pads that sit on top of worksurfaces or your washing machine, which you can put away neatly once finished. • If your utility room is, in reality, an alcove in a main room, consider cordoning it off with a blind or curtain.

1 OUT OF SIGHT Keep the clutter at bay with built-in cupboard units for a neat and tidy laundry room. Multiple units can hide your washing machine and dryer as well as laundry bins and cleaning products. Sisal Linen Titanium flooring, from £45/sq m, Kersaint Cobb

3 CUPBOARD LOVE A pantry or coat cupboard can be the perfect space to house a washing machine and dryer. Stack them one on top of the other to free up floor space and, if there’s room, slot the ironing board down the side. Chichester full-height larder, from £1,855; Ashcroft soft square basket, £50; both Neptune

From my client briefs, it’s clear that utility rooms are more in demand than ever. Ten years ago, most homeowners thought nothing of having a super-sized kitchen – a sea of cupboards, both high and low, with more than adequate storage for cleaning equipment and a washing machine. These days though, many of those excessively sized kitchens have been ditched in favour of a more modest space. Storage is often reduced as banks of wall cupboards are replaced by simple shelves. Often, the kitchen is opened up to the dining or living areas too. All this makes the humble utility room more key than ever. It’s a place to tuck away noisy appliances – especially useful in an open-plan area – or leave messy washing-up if your kitchen doubles as an entertaining area. It’s also a place for extra storage, be it for cleaning equipment, pantry items or an additional freezer. If designed well, it frees up space in the kitchen and allows it to become the modern heart of a home. Utility rooms come in all shapes and forms and are not exclusive to medium-large homes – for example, a utility cupboard off a corridor in a flat, can work really well. > House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 117

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT • If you’re creating a utility room, make sure there is a water supply. • Use stacked laundry bins, which will take up less space, to separate dark, white and coloured clothing. • If there’s a gap between appliances, use it to store a folding washing basket or an airer.

Sociable suppers Ditch the temptation to dine out in favour of simple dishes for sharing at home, like these informal but delicious recipes from Alison Roman

‘Roasting a chicken for people is such a good way to say “I love you”. I recently found this note to myself scrawled on a piece of paper after a dinner party. Not exactly poetry, but using your time to feed those you care about is the ultimate expression of love,’

says food writer Alison Roman. When you’re next expecting guests, look no further than the recipes from her latest book, Nothing Fancy, where you’ll find ‘unfussy food, where no occasion is necessary (other than to eat, of course)’.

Labne with sizzled spring onion and chilli Among some of my friends, this has become known as ‘The Dip’, and I now can’t attend any social gathering or host a dinner party without it being requested. When you make it, you’ll understand why. It’s my very high-brow version of ranch dressing, with an oniony chilli oil that is sizzled with coriander stems (or chives) and swirled into thick and tangy lemony labne. 80ml olive oil 4 spring onions, thinly sliced 1tsp chilli flakes 2tbsp finely chopped coriander or chives, plus extra to garnish Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 500g labne, full-fat Greekstyle yogurt or sour cream 2tbsp lemon juice 1 Heat the olive oil, sliced spring onions, chilli flakes and chopped coriander in a small pan over a medium-low heat. Cook, swirling occasionally, until the spring onion and chilli flakes start to visibly and audibly sizzle before turning the oil a bright fiery orange. 2 Remove the pan from the heat and leave until cool enough to taste, then season with salt and pepper. 3 Combine the labne and lemon juice in a medium bowl and season with salt and pepper. Spoon into a bowl and swirl in the sizzled spring onion chilli oil. Garnish with extra coriander, if you like.

up there with a roast chicken and a perfect salad with a lemon dressing. It’s basic and shouldn’t be overthought. But don’t treat this, or mistake it, as garlic butter on toast – or worse, soggy bread soaked in garlic butter; garlic bread is neither. The secret is to treat it like French toast in the sense that you really, truly do need to soak the bread in butter, before baking it in the oven and ensuring the edges turn golden brown and crisped, while the centre stays soft and tender. Yes, the anchovies are a secret weapon, but the garlic cloves, slowly softening and caramelising in the oil, are the real hero. SERVES 4-8 1 garlic bulb, cloves separated, peeled and crushed with the back of a knife 125ml olive oil 60g tin of anchovies, drained 125g unsalted butter, softened Pinch of chilli flakes (optional) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 or 2 baguettes, halved lengthways Flaky sea salt Finely chopped parsley (optional)

1 Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas mark 7. Heat the garlic and olive oil in a small pan over a medium heat, cooking until the garlic starts to audibly sizzle. 2 Reduce to a very low heat and continue to cook until the garlic is tender and golden brown, which should take about 15-20min. Add the drained anchovies and remove the pan from the heat. 3 Transfer the oil and garlic mixture to a medium-sized bowl along with the butter and chilli flakes. Using a fork, mash everything together

so the garlic cloves break down and everything turns into a delicious, creamy paste. Season with salt and pepper. 4 Using a spoon, evenly distribute the butter mixture onto each cut half of bread, letting it really soak in. Place the bread halves on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 8-10min, or until the edges are golden brown with soft and supple centres. 5 Remove from the oven and sprinkle with flaky sea salt and parsley, if using.

Harissa-rubbed pork shoulder with white beans and Swiss chard There are no preliminary or pre-cooking steps before you slather the pork with a garlicky harissa paste and pop it in the oven, which makes this recipe especially foolproof. You could certainly stop after you’ve braised the shoulder, serving the spicy, tangy pan juices over roast potatoes or a fluffy pile of couscous, but I love adding the beans and returning them to a significantly hotter oven to absorb the flavourful pork fat, getting a little browned and crisped along with the pork. SERVES 6-10 1.8kg boneless pork shoulder Salt and freshly ground black pepper 125g harissa paste 60ml distilled white (malt) vinegar 3tbsp tomato paste 3tbsp light brown sugar 4 garlic cloves, finely grated 2 × 400g tins small white beans, such as cannellini, drained and rinsed

1 large bunch Swiss chard, stems removed, leaves torn into bite-sized pieces 1 preserved lemon, seeds removed, thinly sliced 1 large handful coriander, tender leaves and stems 1 lemon, halved

1 Preheat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan/gas mark 3. Season the pork with salt and pepper and place in a large casserole dish. Combine the harissa paste, vinegar, tomato paste, sugar and garlic in a medium-sized bowl. Smear the harissa mixture all over the pork, getting into the nooks and crannies. 2 Add 375ml water to the dish, place the lid on and transfer to the oven. Cook until the pork is nearly falling-apart tender, roughly 3-3½hrs.

COOK’S NOTE

This dish can be made up to three days ahead of time – minus the Swiss chard – and refrigerated. Reheat before adding the chard.

3 Remove the lid. Add the beans and season with salt and pepper. Increase the oven temperature to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6 and return the dish to the oven, uncovered. Roast until the beans have soaked up all the liquid and the top of the pork is deeply golden brown, approx 40-45min. 4 Transfer the pork to a cutting board. Add the Swiss chard and preserved lemon to the beans and stir to wilt the leaves. Cut the pork into 1cmthick slices – don’t worry if it starts to shred when slicing. 5 Transfer the beans and greens onto a large serving plate and place the pork on top. (Or place back into the casserole dish and serve from there.) Scatter with coriander and serve with lemon.

Smashed sweet potatoes with maple syrup and sour cream Following in the great tradition of crispy smashed potatoes, these spuds are twice cooked as well, but with different results – as a sweet potato, after all, is not a regular potato. Less crispy than its starchy friend, this dish is more about the creamy interior than the crispy exterior. SERVES 4-6 750g small sweet potatoes 250g sour cream 2tbsp lime or lemon juice Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2tbsp olive oil 90g unsalted butter 80ml pure maple syrup 45g uncooked buckwheat, lightly toasted in a dry pan 2tbsp thyme leaves Flaky sea salt 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6. Using a fork, prick the sweet potatoes all over, so they don’t explode in the oven. Place directly on a rack and bake for 50-60min until tender. Remove from the oven to cool. 2 Meanwhile, combine the sour cream and lime or lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. The mixture should taste fairly tart and salty. Spread across the base of a serving platter. 3 Once the sweet potatoes are cool enough to handle, use the palm of your hand to crush them slightly. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Working in batches, add the sweet potatoes, pressing lightly to make contact with the pan. Season with salt and pepper 126 housebeautiful.com/uk

and cook until lightly crisped and browned on one side. Flip and continue to cook until browned and crisped on the other side. Transfer the sweet potatoes to a serving platter and repeat this process with the remaining potatoes. 4 Without wiping out the pan, add the maple syrup and cook until thickened and starting to caramelise – roughly 2min. Drizzle the sauce over the sweet potatoes and top with the toasted buckwheat, thyme and lots of flaky salt.

Buttered salmon with red onion and dill I would eat bagels with gravlax and cream cheese

for every meal if I could, but as I can’t, I have this salmon recipe, which hits a lot of the same notes. There’s plenty of red onion, briny capers and fresh dill. The sesame seeds are optional, but I think they add an even more toasty dimension to the brown butter sauce. There’s a lot going on here flavour-wise, so I recommend letting this dish be the loudest thing on the table and simply serving it with a herby salad, steamed broccoli and maybe garlic bread. SERVES 4-6 1 lemon 1kg salmon fillet, skin on or skinless Salt

Freshly ground black pepper 90g unsalted butter 60ml olive oil, plus extra for drizzling ½ small red onion, sliced into very thin rings 2tbsp brined capers, drained 1 large handful dill sprigs 2tbsp toasted sesame seeds (optional) 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan/gas mark 3. Thinly slice half the lemon and remove any seeds; save the other half for juicing. Place the salmon on a baking tray or in a large baking dish and season with the salt and freshly ground pepper. 2 Heat the butter in a medium frying pan over a medium-high heat. Cook, occasionally swirling, until the butter has started to brown. Add the olive

oil, sliced lemon and half the onion. Season with salt and pepper and cook, tossing occasionally, until the lemon and onion have started to brown. You’re looking for them to be fairly crisp, rather than softened and caramelised. Add the capers. 3 Pour the browned butter and lemon mixture over the salmon. Place in the oven and roast until just cooked through, for roughly 12-15min. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving dish. 4 Meanwhile, toss together the dill sprigs and sesame seeds, if using, in a mediumsized bowl. Season with salt, pepper and the juice from the remaining lemon half. Scatter the mixture on top of the baked salmon, along with the remaining sliced onion. House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 127

Sticky chilli chicken with hot and sour pineapple I don’t love sweet with my savoury food, but this dish is an exception. The sticky, caramelised chunks of pineapple that get basted with spicy chicken fat as they roast together are a match made in one-pan dinner heaven. SERVES 6-8 1.8kg bone-in, skin-on chicken (legs, thighs, breasts and wings all work) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 100g light brown sugar 125ml unseasoned rice wine vinegar 125g sambal or other chilli paste 60ml fish sauce 60ml lime juice 2tsp chilli flakes 2 garlic cloves, finely grated ½ pineapple, peeled and cored, cut into 4cm wedges ½ shallot or 4 spring onions, thinly sliced 1 large handful coriander, tender leaves picked, and stems coarsely chopped 2tbsp toasted sesame seeds

1 Season the chicken with salt and pepper and place in a large resealable plastic bag or baking dish. 2 Combine the sugar, vinegar, chilli paste, fish sauce, lime juice, chilli flakes and garlic in a medium-sized bowl, whisking to dissolve the sugar. Pour over the chicken, massaging it in with your hands to make sure everything gets an equal coating. Seal the bag or cover the baking dish and let the chicken sit for at least 30min in the fridge.

3 Preheat the oven to 215°C/185°C fan/gas mark 5. Place the chicken and pineapple wedges in a deep baking tray (for easy cleaning, line the tray with foil or baking paper). Drizzle the remaining marinade over everything and place in the oven. 4 Roast until the chicken is deeply browned, caramelised and cooked through; roughly 50-60min. If you have a pastry brush, feel free to baste the chicken and pineapple periodically with the rendered chicken fat juices. By this time, the pineapple will also be golden and juicy, which makes for a delicious, sticky sauce. 5 Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving platter, carving the chicken and slicing the pineapple for easier serving, if you like. Scatter with the shallot, coriander and sesame seeds before serving.

Lemony turmeric tea cake I tend to refer to this as ‘house cake’, which is, of course, cake to keep in your house at all times. I’m not what I would call an earnest person, but, in all earnestness, just slicing into this cake makes a bad day better. It travels well, and can be taken anywhere for any occasion – but most of the time it never makes it out of my house. MAKES 1 LOAF 225g plain flour 2tsp baking powder 1tsp salt ¾tsp ground turmeric

220g sugar, plus an extra 2tbsp to sprinkle on top 2tbsp lemon zest, plus 2tbsp lemon juice and ½ lemon, thinly sliced, seeds removed 185g sour cream or full-fat Greek-style yogurt, plus extra for serving (optional) 2 large eggs 125g unsalted butter, melted Whipped cream, to serve (optional) 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4. Lightly grease a 10 x 23cm (2lb) loaf tin with non-stick cooking spray or butter. Line with baking paper, leaving some overhanging on both of the longer sides so you’re able to easily lift the cake out. 2 Whisk the flour, baking powder, salt and turmeric in a medium-sized bowl.

3 In a large bowl, combine the sugar with the lemon zest and rub together with your fingertips until the sugar is tinted yellow and fragrant. Whisk in the sour cream or Greek-style yogurt, eggs and the lemon juice until well blended. 4 Using a spatula, add the wet mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined. Fold in the melted butter. Scrape the batter into the prepared tin, gently smoothing the top. Scatter with the lemon slices and the extra 2tbsp sugar. 5 Bake for 50-60min, until the top of the cake is golden brown, the edges pull away slightly from the sides and a skewer inserted comes out clean. I love deeply caramelised lemon, but if it looks like they’re getting too dark, lay a piece of foil on top to prevent burning. Let the cake cool before slicing. USE UP SUMAC Sumac is an oft underused spice that can end up languishing in the back of a cupboard after one use. It has a uniquely citrussy flavour that can instantly lift a whole host of dishes. Where you’d use lemon, try using sumac instead. Sprinkle over hummus for an instantly fancier party dip. Use with roast meat and fish. Lamb, chicken and more robust white fish will appreciate its zesty flavour. Liven up roast potatoes, chips or potato wedges. Mix with flaky sea salt and toss with your crispy potato of choice.

Home-grown fruit is in rather short supply at this time of year. Save for a few apples and pears that survived past Christmas, the UK farmers’ markets of deepest winter are almost completely bare of fruit. Luckily, however, although the sun might not be shining in this hemisphere, across the globe, it’s ripening all sorts of exotic fruit. Most UK pineapples are imported from Costa Rica, so you should consider the environmental cost of them being flown all that way. But I’m of the opinion that if you largely buy locally sourced and in-season fruit and vegetables, you can be forgiven for picking up the odd exotic treat now and again. Pineapples can be problematic. They curdle cream, stop jellies from setting, and finding a ripe specimen can be a needle in a haystack situation. Look for a weighty fruit as this indicates plenty of juice, and a fresh, sweet fragrant scent at the base. Pineapples don’t ripen any further after harvesting so leaving them, hopefully, in the fruit bowl for days on end is futile. When you do happen upon a ripe one, they have a complex,

sweet-shop-esque quality with notes of all the classic partners: rum, coconut, vanilla and brown sugar. They hold up well in stir-fries, stews and curries and roast beautifully. Many Asian and south American dishes use it as the acidic element in place of, or as well as, lime. Chopped pineapple with chilli, lime, mint, coriander and salt makes an excellent companion to fried fish, for example. Perhaps pineapple’s best friend, however, is pork. Whatever your thoughts on a Hawaiian pizza, sweet, tart pineapple is the perfect accompaniment to salty, fatty pork. Use bought or homemade pineapple jam to glaze pork ribs or a roast ham, or throw a few chunks into a coconut-based pork curry or a rich ham and bean stew. Finally, lest we forget, the staple of the 1980s birthday party in the village hall, the humble cheese and pineapple cocktail stick hedgehog. Say what you like about this combination but those hedgehogs were always spineless by the end of the party. Follow Giovanna on Instagram @giovannaryan House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 131

TIME TO ESCAPE Dark, cold days call for cosy retreats. Travel writer David Wickers rounds up some of his favourites

What makes a perfect hotel for a winter getaway? Fine meals, hardto-get-out-of beds, service with a smile, log fires, maybe a massage... and something interesting to do when (or if) you manage to haul yourself outside. Here’s my selection of great escapes. 1 R O S E C A S T L E C O T TA G E , NEAR CONISTON, CUMBRIA For those who prefer to self-cater, the two-bedroom Rose Castle Cottage in the heart of the Lake District will – according to the National Trust – ‘leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside’. The pretty 19th-century stone cottage sits alone in the landscape just above beauty spot Tarn Hows, with not a neighbour in sight. Carefully restored to retain its original, simple character, it’s the perfect retreat – with a log-burner ready to warm your cockles after a day’s hiking. nationaltrust.org.uk House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 133

With original beams and open fires, the 18th-century village inn blends traditional charm with modern touches, and offers gastro-pub dining based on estate-farmed and local produce. Dogs are welcome. devonshirebeeley.co.uk

3 THE OLD MANSE OF BLAIR, PERTHSHIRE, SCOTLAND Last spring, the 200-year-old building was transformed into a luxurious boutique hotel, with ex-Gleneagles chef Jonathan Greer at the helm of its new restaurant, The Orangery (where there’s 134 housebeautiful.com/uk

A WINTER SHOW Gardeners might be counting down the days until spring is here again, but there’s a special beauty to be found in gardens at this time of year. We visited the stunning Walled Garden at Cowdray Park for some inspirational ways to bring some winter wow... WORDS AMANDA MORGAN PHOTOGRAPHY MIMI CONNOLLY

GARDENING

here’s something undeniably magical about a garden on a bright, crisp winter’s morning… frost-kissed seedheads, heathers covered in shimmering gossamer spiders’ webs, icy ornamental grasses and bare tree branches forming stark silhouettes against the horizon. It’s good for the soul and, as long as you leave seedheads to stand and don’t sweep up too much, great for wildlife too. So squeeze every moment of joy out of winter – get up, get rugged up and get outside to benefit from all that your garden has to offer at this oft-overlooked time of year. Most doctors and psychologists agree that being outdoors improves wellbeing, leaving you feeling energised and more alive, while researchers have found that just looking at nature promotes feelings of peace and tranquillity – all the more reason to make your garden a place you want to be every month of the year.

T

PLANTS FOR WINTER WONDER FROSTED GLORIES Clockwise from left A Verbena bonariensis seedhead; the twisted branches of Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ bearing yellow male catkins; a Nigella damascena seedhead; thorny rose stems add structure when the temperature drops

The garden has plenty to offer in winter, from flowers and berries bringing bright pops of colour, to scent, dramatic stems and barks. Try planting ilex (holly), pyracantha or japonica, not only for their jewelled clusters of vibrant crimson berries, but also as a handy source of sustenance for visiting wildlife. Hardy winter pansies and cyclamen will enhance flowerbeds with their multi-hued petals, while Helleborus niger, the Christmas rose, which, as its name implies, blooms beautifully throughout the winter months, will provide perfect white flowers offset by deep green leaves. When planning your own personal Narnia, remember to think about shrubs and trees. Why not try a witch hazel? These hardy deciduous shrubs will brighten up a garden with their red, orange or yellow flowers, depending on the variety, and several are scented too. Coloured stems and bark are always a dramatic winter bonus. Acers, or Japanese maples, are spectacular when they’re in leaf, but Acer griseum also offers winter interest with attractive House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 139

peeling chestnut-brown bark. Other great additions are dogwoods (we love the orange-red shoots of Cornus sanguinea, aka ‘Midwinter Fire’) and willows such as Salix alba var vitellina ‘Britzensis’ (the coral bark willow), with bright red stems that pierce the winter gloom.

THE WALLED GARDEN Seen in these photographs in its winter splendour, the Walled Garden at Cowdray Park in West Sussex is thought to have originally been a Tudor Pleasure Garden visited by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. It had fallen into disrepair and lay neglected until keen gardener and garden accessory designer Jan Howard leased it as a display space for the spectacular rusted-iron garden structures she designs and makes at her award-winning company, Room in the Garden. Over the years, Jan – who has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show, among other prestigious horticultural events – breathed new life into the place, restoring both the garden and the adjoining building to their former glory. No longer open to the public, this unique retreat once offered visitors a year-round opportunity to experience its fabulous past as they strolled among turf benches, romantic arbours, scented rose gardens, lavender walks, herb gardens, fruit trees and curated herbaceous beds. Jan’s structures can be viewed by appointment; visit roominthegarden.co.uk.

ADD SOME STRUCTURE Wooden garden elements, such as pergolas and arbours, are great at this pared-back time of year, standing proud even if the garden is blanketed in snow. Bounce what light there is around your space with strategically placed outdoor mirrors that twinkle in the watery sun, and think about adding sculptures and statues that will bring an element of art and personality into even the smallest space. They’ll stand the test of time too – metalwork pieces age gracefully, with iron developing a beautiful flaky orange layer when exposed to the elements, and copper unveiling its distinctive verdigris patina over the years, while stone birdbaths, feeders and ponds look great when weathered and provide a vital source of water for birds and other wildlife. 140 housebeautiful.com/uk

WELLNESS TRENDS

DESIGN FOR A NEW DECADE ‘Wellness’- it’s the word on everyone’s lips. Our living well expert Oliver Heath highlights five of the top wellbeing design trends for 2020 and how to incorporate them in to your own home There’s a growing recognition among architects and designers of the powerful impact the built environment has on our health and wellbeing. Workplaces, schools and hospitality spaces are now being designed to be as ‘happy and healthy’ 144 housebeautiful.com/uk

as possible, with a focus on aspects such as lighting, air quality, and a connection to nature. The good news is that many of these ideas are now trickling down to our homes. These are the five big trends we’ll all be talking about this year…

1 BRINGING NATURE INDOORS WHY IT MATTERS The benefits of incorporating natural elements into the built environment is becoming increasingly well understood. Research shows that being in a space that evokes nature can help reduce stress, blood pressure and heart rate, while increasing productivity, creativity and wellbeing. WHAT TO TRY • One of the easiest ways to enjoy a connection with nature is to have plants in the home. For those of us who feel we can’t be trusted to look after them, there’s plenty of plant-care education out there – from online resources to garden centres. Online plant retailer Patch has an easy-touse website (patchplants.com), where you can order plants based on the light levels in your home. The elaborate living walls we see in work and hospitality spaces are now being designed on a smaller, modular scale, such as the ones available from Plantbox (plantbox.shop), or can even be made at home using shelving and pot plants. • Colour is another simple way you can draw from nature to create a more positive home environment. Dulux Colour of the Year for 2020, for example, is Tranquil Dawn, a soft grey green (pictured here) inspired by the morning sky (dulux.co.uk). Spaces can become fun and vibrant by adding highlights of yellows and reds, whereas darker blues and greens can influence the mind and allow for recuperation in calm corners. (See our Colour Your Home Happy supplement for ideas.)

The light levels in a space can have a signiďŹ cant impact on the way we feel

WELLNESS TRENDS

2 A FOCUS ON LIGHT WHY IT MATTERS The colour and light levels in a space can have a significant impact on the way we feel, from boosting our mood to disrupting our sleep – resulting in fatigue. A lack of light is linked to mental health issues such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). WHAT TO TRY • Biodynamic and circadian lighting (artificial lighting that achieves the biological effects of natural light, changing colour according to the position of the sun to help keep our 24-hour sleep-wake cycle in check) are becoming standard in the workplace and can play a beneficial role in our homes. • Companies such as Coelux (coelux.com), which makes artificial skylights that mimic natural light, are creating products for spaces with limited access to windows and daylight. • Floor and side lamps can also offer circadian lighting through colour-changing bulbs or products such as Haberdashery’s Dawn to Dusk lamps that ‘rise and set’ like the sun (haberdashery.com).

3 CLEANING UP YOUR AIR WHY IT MATTERS Given that we spend 90 per cent of our lives indoors, air quality is a hot topic, with 91 per cent of us living in areas where pollution exceeds World Health Organisation guidelines. The website addresspollution.org can tell you the levels of pollution around your home and, if it’s above legal limits, it urges you to demand action. Furthermore, indoor air quality can be five times worse than outside and this can lead to allergies, asthma and breathing difficulties. WHAT TO TRY • I’d like to reiterate the benefits plants can have on air quality. More and more research is coming to light suggesting that trees and certain plants, such as English ivy, Chinese evergreens, peace lilies and snake plants, can remove toxins from the air. • In terms of technology, I’ve been testing an air purifier from Blueair (blueair.com). The Classic 480i is linked to a smart app that shows me how clean or polluted the air inside my home is. This means when pollution levels are high, such as in summer when the windows are open, I can ramp up the system remotely to clean the air for when I get home. • Another innovation on the horizon is Ikea’s Gunrid air purifying curtain. These are being made with certain minerals that break down common pollutants that would otherwise end up indoors. Although not launched yet, it’s encouraging to see new, easy-toimplement solutions popping up, with the scope to be applied to other textiles in the future. House Beautiful FEBRUARY 2020 147

WELLNESS TRENDS

4 THE IMPORTANCE OF PEACE WHY IT MATTERS A noisy environment can be stressful and distracting – think about the roar of heavy traffic or an ear-splitting pneumatic drill! – so the acoustics of a space play an important role in our general wellbeing. WHAT TO TRY • In an ideal world, our homes should be free of unwanted noise from outside. Double-glazing is one solution, but it’s not always suitable. When it comes to sound-masking, there’s a lot of scope for creativity and making it both functional and stylish – from curtains and soft furnishings to planted partitions between spaces. Also think about avoiding hard materials and surfaces that bounce noise around. Companies such as Friends of Wilson (friendsofwilson.com) provide sound-absorbing acoustic wall panels, room dividers and hanging screens that can be easily incorporated into the home.

5 GREEN AND TIDY WHAT TO TRY • A potentially overlooked aspect of living a more sustainable life is the importance of being mindful about our possessions – where they come from and how we store them. In turn, keeping clutter to a minimum benefits our psychological wellbeing. There isn’t much we can’t rent nowadays, from clothes and toys to tools, bikes and even plants. Ikea is trialling an office furniture renting scheme in Switzerland, with the intention, if it’s successful, of moving on to packages such as entire kitchens. This idea extends to general household belongings: we can now receive and return baby clothes as children grow, reducing waste and saving on drawer space. We can rent tools from tool libraries as and when we need them rather than buying and storing them all year round to be used a handful of times. And, as for those of us who don’t have a bike shed, cramming your bike into the hallway is no longer necessary, with pay-as-you-go bike rentals available in many cities in the UK. • If it’s ease of options you’re after then simply switch your energy provider to one that supplies 100 per cent renewable energy. These suppliers offering sustainable energy alternatives – Bulb (bulb.co.uk), Octopus (octopus.energy), Ecotricity (ecotricity.co.uk) and Good Energy (goodenergy.co.uk) – are just a few worth investigating.

Fi na l th ou ghts... With the current drive to think about how the way we live impacts on the environment, it’s exciting to see this also encompasses a more human-centred approach to how our buildings affect us. We need our spaces to be not just ‘less bad’, but to be restorative; to help us to live better – to work, rest, play and connect. HB 148 housebeautiful.com/uk

WHY IT MATTERS From helping the environment to improving our health and reducing costs by recycling and conserving energy, ‘going green’ is becoming ever more important – and cutting the clutter can really help.

Innovative new pillow transforms lives The Gx Pillow cradles your head and neck to give you an uninterrupted night’s sleep

UNIQUE BREAKTHROUGH He made a breakthrough when he realised that all pillows spread out and flatten down as the weight of the head rests on them. This flattening progresses through the night, leaving the head and neck poorly supported – and sleep interrupted.

EXTRA COMFORT AND SUPPORT The innovative model that Alex designed has internal ties that hold the filling in place, and pull the pillow in and up to cradle the head and neck. This provides extra comfort and support that lasts through the night and ensures that you get the most benefit from an undisturbed sleep. Delighted customer Ann Morris says: “I’ve had pain-racked nights for years, but with this unbelievably effective pillow I can at last sleep through.” Made in Britain, the Gx Pillow comes in a choice of two levels of support: Medium-Soft, which most people seem to prefer, or Medium-Firm for those who like a little more resistance. The pillow has already transformed the lives of thousands of people. So if you have spent a lifetime looking for the perfect pillow, your search may well be over!

I can honestly say that your pillow has made the world of difference… and fully endorse your pillow as being quite unique in its ability to maintain support throughout the night.

A

NEAR tragedy has led to an amazing new development in sleep technology. When Georgia Miles was recovering from a serious accident, her father Alexander looked around everywhere for a pillow that would keep her comfortable throughout the night. After examining countless types, Alex, a furniture and domestic product designer, decided to engineer his own.

Dr Deane Halfpenny, Harley Street Consultant and back pain specialist

This is why many people find themselves half awake and ‘pillow-punching’ in the middle of the night, desperately trying to get comfortable.

Suspension Pillow You can sleep better!

The pillow has evolved

Many of us have bought pillows without finding the right one because most conventional pillows, whatever their filling, flatten throughout the night. This can lead to disturbed and broken sleep. There is now a solution to this problem so it’s time to replace troublesome conventional pillows with the Gx Suspension Pillow. It keeps its shape and cradles the neck and head for an undisturbed night. The Gx Suspension Pillow will change the way you sleep so you wake refreshed, rejuvenated and ready for the day.

The design of the revolutionary new Gx Suspension Pillow is a leap forward in pillow technology. The unique ‘double X’ internal ties resist the flattening by pulling the pillow in and up to give the extra comfort and support that so many of us are looking for. Thousands already say the Gx Suspension Pillow is the best pillow ever.

It’s the intelligent choice…

Rediscover a great night’s sleep

ENJOY THE SPECTACULAR SWISS ALPS ON THE GLACIER EXPRESS Take a magical Alpine rail journey past soaring peaks, dramatic ravines and pretty villages, plus enjoy the best of Bern, Lucerne and Interlaken

T

he Alps might not be the world’s tallest mountain range, but they are certainly one of the most beautiful. This is especially true in winter, when a fresh layer of snow has fallen, and the towns dotted along the Alpine valleys are at their most romantic. On our five-day tour of the Swiss Alps in February, you’ll stay in a charming hotel in Interlaken, visit Lucerne and Bern, cruise across picturesque Lake Thun, and ascend Mount Rigi on a traditional cogwheel railway. You’ll also spend a day on the Glacier Express, enjoying a leisurely three-course lunch while you climb slowly and steadily higher up into the mountains, travelling through the mighty Oberalp Pass.

REASONS TO BOOK RIDE THE GLACIER EXPRESS After a short train journey to Chur, in east Switzerland, you’ll board the iconic Glacier Express for one of the most unforgettable days of your tour. The ‘slowest express train in the world’ has been in operation since 1930, though it now has modern, comfortable and airy carriages. Large windows offer panoramic views of the surrounding fantastical landscapes, as you inch your way through snow-coated woodland and up into the Oberalp Pass, standing 2,033 metres above sea level. During the journey, you’ll be served a delicious three-course lunch, and in the evening, you’ll return to Interlaken for a relaxing evening at your hotel.

CHARMING INTERLAKEN Sitting in a narrow valley between two lakes, Interlaken, in central Switzerland, is a classic

Alpine resort town with a picturesque, olde-worlde feel. Timber-clad buildings line the streets – one of which, the Hotel Carlton-Europe, will be your base for five days. With an on-site spa, vintage décor and a restaurant serving a menu of traditional Swiss dishes, it will give you a real sense of life in the Alps. You’ll also be close to the emerald waters of Lake Thun and the mountains, forests and meadows of the Bernese Oberland region.

LAKE THUN CRUISE Day four of your tour will feature an afternoon cruise on Lake Thun, one of Switzerland’s most scenic spots, surrounded on all sides by dramatic landscapes, including quaint mountain villages, historic churches and 12th-century Thun Castle. You’ll also be able to spot the distant peaks of the region’s most famous summits – the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

MOUNT RIGI AND LAKE LUCERNE A visit to the colourful lakeside city of Lucerne will be a chance to breathe in plenty of fresh mountain air. Following leisure time to explore the city’s shops, cafés and squares, you’ll take the train to nearby Arth-Goldau, where a traditional cogwheel railway will lift you slowly to the summit of Mount Rigi – where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across the surrounding mountains and glittering Lake Lucerne below.

EXPLORE BERN The morning of your final full day will be spent exploring the fascinating Swiss capital

Bern, where the carefully preserved, pedestrianised Old Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its many fountains, narrow streets, ancient spires and ornate public buildings still stand proud decades, and in some cases centuries, after their construction. Most famous among these buildings is Bern Minster Cathedral, a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, and the intricate 13th-century Zytglogge (clock tower). The arrival of each new hour sets off an incredible mechanical puppet show, including roosters, dancing bears, a jester and the Ancient Greek god of time, Chronos. The city’s mountainous skyline adds to its romantic appeal.

I LIVE LIKE THIS... a grown-up flat-share

Four years ago I made a significant change to my life I’d been renting a one-bed flat in London for a few years but it was taking a big chunk out of my income – it’s a real challenge renting on your own. And because at that time I wanted to reduce my hours to concentrate on getting a qualification in advertising and maybe set up my own business, I was very conscious of how much I was paying out each month. It started out as a joke My friend Sarah was thinking about retraining as a personal coach and working from home, and we used to joke about sharing. I was 37 and Sarah 43, so it wasn’t the usual time in life to consider living like that but, gradually, it began to make sense and we realised we could get a nicer, bigger place between us rather than tiny studio flats on our own. Sharing at your age? Some people think the idea of living with other people when we’re older is out of the question, because we’re too set in our ways, would struggle to share a bathroom, would worry about the sharer not paying the bills on time… But I saw it differently. When you’re older, you know what you want and what you don’t want. Work out the hard bits before you move in We were honest about what we wanted from the start. A bathroom each was a priority. We also 162 housebeautiful.com/uk

agreed to budget for a cleaner once a week too. When you’re both working it reduces a lot of stress knowing the place will be clean. We set out who would pay which bills and when. Tasteful furniture We both like how the flat is decorated but you have to compromise a little when you share a lounge and kitchen and not put too many of your cushions out or rearrange things without discussion! We checked with each other about furnishings in advance. I need my space! By this point in our lives we were realistic about how much space we required. I’d advise anyone about to share to talk about the level of interaction you expect – you probably don’t want to spend all your time together, but may enjoy sharing meals occasionally. We clarified that neither of us would be offended if the other decided to retire to the bedroom and not talk after a long day’s work. Talk about bringing people back I met my partner a couple of months before we moved in and spent a lot of weekends with him. But I did ask Sarah if it would be alright if he came back just occasionally, because I wouldn’t want someone else being there too much either. At first it was just about saving money For both of us the arrangement made good financial sense, but as we lived together, we began to see the benefits of companionship. Sarah had started working from home when we moved in and liked having somebody to chat with in the evenings. And because I’m interested in setting goals and moving on in my career, it was great for me to have a personal coach for free! Plus we’d watch box sets together with a glass of wine every now and again, and that’s really nice and bonding. Having another person around brings new perspectives. It’s definitely made life richer for both of us. HB Visit cohabitas.com for information about sharing in your 40s plus

COLOUR CONFIDENCE Finding your perfect palette is all about going with the hues you love and that make you happy. You’ll also need to factor in what the room will be used for, the natural light available and the mood you want to create - calm and relaxed or vibrant and energised. The following pages offer plenty of inspiration...

INTO THE BLUE This striking look is a brilliant example of building up a colour story. From the intense cobalt blue wall, to the paler shade of the sofa and the watery blue rug – the hierarchy here creates balance and harmony. Mya three-seater sofa in Velvet in Indigo Blue, £699, DFS

TURQUOISE SEA Tiles offer a great way to introduce colour – either in small amounts to add interest or over a large area to create a bold statement. These hexagonal ones with their glossy, uneven finish look really appealing and this fresh aqua shade works particularly well in kitchens and bathrooms. Onda Hexagon tiles, £147/sq m, Fired Earth

GREEN WITH ENVY Strong colours can still be restful. The layering of these vibrant greens creates a warm, enveloping effect that works surprisingly well in a bedroom. Westex Westend carpet in Pine, £45.99/sq m; Christie bedframe, from £369; both Carpetright

IN THE RED CORNER This deep wine-red shade adds drama and warmth and is a good choice for a cool, north-facing room. It works equally well in a small or large space, especially when combined with dark wooden floors. Century collection Red Mahogany C9 paint, from £29/0.94L, Benjamin Moore

LIGHT WORKS A key factor to consider when choosing colour is the amount of natural light available. Dark walls can work well in a room flooded with natural light, and are the perfect backdrop to pale-coloured furniture. Cooper sofa, from £1,339 for a three-seater; footstool in House Velvet Petal, from £399; both Sofa Workshop

RETRO VIBE Dark woods are making a comeback, along with tan leather furniture. These earthy colours look fantastic with splashes of gold and mustard and set the scene for an elegant retro look. Sterling shelf unit, £1,397, Maisons du Monde

WHY WE LOVE COLOUR...

Jane Rockett and Lucy St George Best friends and cofounders of the inspired luxe homeware emporium Rockett St George, Jane Rockett (left) and Lucy St George, talk about how colour transforms our homes and mood… When did you first start playing with colour? LUCY I worked for many years as a florist and that was a great introduction to colour and trends. You can create emotions and romanticism in a plain room just by adding floral arrangements and lighting. JANE When I was very young my mum let me decorate my bedroom however I wanted. I painted a Ziggy Stardust lightning bolt on the wall – so I always had that sense of freedom.

What does colour do for you? LUCY I dress my home as I dress myself, often going for darker shades because they make me feel more comfortable, but I also like metallics, or a burst of red or pink. A dark background lets everything else shine. How does colour affect our moods? LUCY There are scientific and emotional sides to the colour spectrum, as we learned when researching our book Extraordinary Interiors In Colour. Red, for example, is romantic and angry. Use it carefully – and, I’d say, not in a bedroom! JANE Yellow is invigorating and promotes happiness. It doesn’t have to be sunshine bright; there are grown-up shades – gold, amber – that evoke the same feelings.

Are we braver with colour these days? JANE Yes. The drinks-trolley trend has encouraged people to be daring and make their homes glamorous, happy places. What do you wish you’d known years ago? LUCY Your home is where you can be you. The colours should be about your tastes, or it’s a bit like putting on somebody else’s dress: you like it on them, but you know it won’t suit you. JANE Be brave. Don’t hesitate. Just go for it, be bold – it’s just fun, after all. For luxe interiors shopping ideas, go to rockettstgeorge.co.uk. Known for embracing the bold, these experts share their passion for interiors with impact

Sophi e Robinson The stylist and designer – and believer in the power of colour to make our homes happy – is on a mission to ban the beige You aren’t shy of using vibrant colours. When did that all begin? I was always obsessed with bright shades. My light-bulb moment was when I was seven and my parents allowed me to pick the scheme for my bedroom. I chose a multicoloured graph-style check wallpaper with a rainbow border, and matching rainbow curtains and duvet cover! Is colour something to be scared of? Absolutely not – in fact I run workshops to help people lose the fear. Once you know what your colour palette is and what really resonates with you, you can use colour well. It is all there in your gut – it’s just been

suppressed by years of ‘good taste’ and worrying about what’s in and what’s out.

a pink stair runner. A hallway sets the style of a home, so have it in a favourite shade.

Your best advice? Before you jump on Pinterest or pick up a paint chart think: ‘What do I want to do in this room and how do I want to feel in here?’ And then the colour will support that mood.

How can we find our true colours? Have a look in your jewellery box, accessories drawer, make-up bag. I had a client once who wanted her kitchen matched to her favourite purple nail polish. And she loved that kitchen; it made her feel fabulous.

Is there a link between what we have on our walls and what’s in our wardrobes? When I was a judge on The Great Interior Design Challenge, I expressed myself through clothes on the show and people said: ‘You’re so confident with colour. I wish I was.’ That was when I started blogging about colour. So, yes!

Is it as simple as following your heart? My seven-year-old self knew exactly what colours I like. My son is the same. I let him decorate his bedroom and he’s five – he didn’t hesitate: ‘Atomic Red, Mum!’ When you get back in touch with what you really like it is a revelation.

Where is the happy space in your home? My hallway – it’s deep lazuli blue, and I have

Light direction South facing Brilliant white looks incredible in south-facing rooms, as the sunlight enhances and warms its softer tone and makes it glow. It’s also a great option for a small space as the light hits all the surfaces in the room, making it appear bigger and brighter. Try No 11 Pure Brilliant White breatheasy matt emulsion, £10/2.5L, Crown Paints North facing Where the light is often darker and weaker, creamy, warm whites will work best to create a cosy ambience. Try No 2 Stock absolute matt emulsion, £45/2.5L, Little Greene Multi facing A shade that looks clean without being too bright will work well in both north- and south-facing rooms.
