WHAT TO DO WITH A POUF
Derived from the French word bouffer (to puff out), poufs are the legless, more casual cousins of ottomans. They can easily be moved around to serve as footrests or extra seats. Try a firm one as a side table— especially adorbs topped with a tray.

But you’ll ward off a sugar crash (and potentially restless sleep) if your choice isn’t too sweet, and feel most satisfied if you add the right mix-ins. “Nutritious toppings make cereal more filling, so you won’t want a second dinner later,” says San Francisco Bay

Top off your bowl with berries (any kind) plus a sprinkling of chopped walnuts, sliced almonds, or sunflower seeds—their protein keeps your belly full.

good question
how bad is it to use regular shampoo on color-treated hair? If you’re ever going to get in a lather about ingredients, now’s the time. “Regular shampoos are not formulated for the needs of color-treated hair and can make it fade faster,” says cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer, owner of Mix Solutions in Uxbridge, MA. Shampoos that contain sulfates can be harsh on dye jobs. Go for bottles that mention “for color-treated hair”—they’re made to minimize color removal and keep hair strong, since dye can make strands more fragile. Some formulas contain conditioners like dimethicone that form a protective film. Others have strengtheners such as keratin and collagen. Popular picks: Love Beauty and Planet Murumuru Butter & Rose Blooming Color shampoo and Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Color shampoo.
KINDA BAD!
welcome, everyone!
It’s cool, real estate agents say, and you’ll be in good company: Up to 30% of open house visitors are curious locals, says Paula Monthofer, a realtor in Flagstaff, AZ, and a spokesperson for the National Association of Realtors. People who are just peeking help an open house look popular and may get the word out about a great listing. Realtors also know they can make good connections: “Often, people at open houses are thinking of making a move but aren’t yet ready to buy,” says Monthofer, noting that she regularly reconnects with folks when they are ready. So don’t feel funny about putting your name on the sign-in sheet, but mention that you’re not in the market right now so the listing agent won’t waste time following up.

good question
how bad is it to mount a curtain rod from the window trim, not the wall? “That’s bad for aesthetics and practical function,” says HGTV designer Hilary Farr, cohost of Love It or List It. Concealing the top of the window trim could look weird next to the rest of a room’s moldings. And even when the curtains are open, they can’t let in maximum light because they won’t totally clear the glass—there will always be fabric blocking it. Not to mention that it’s safest to secure the rod to studs in the wall, whatever the weight of your curtains. If you have the space, Farr suggests putting it 4 inches above the window trim and extending it about 12 inches on either side. If you don’t have that much room, go as high as you can or consider a rod that mounts to the ceiling.
PRETTY BAD!
how bad is it to go for a run in old sneakers?
REALLY BAD! 40 HGTV Magazine
GETTY IMAGES
Just because they’re in one piece doesn’t mean they work like they used to. “The shape and materials of sneakers tend to become deformed over several hundred miles,” says Brian Metzler, author of Kicksology: The Hype, Science, Culture & Cool of Running Shoes. Foams used in midsoles break down and stop providing ample cushioning, while patterns of wear on the insole and treads can make your stride less efficient and lead to trips and injuries. Retiring sneakers about every six months is the general rule of thumb (toe?) for a casual runner, but if yours don’t feel lumpy and there’s no wear and tear in one particular area of the sole, you might get a year out of them. Extend the next pair’s mileage by wearing them exclusively for running, not errands.

You don’t need a sprawling space to pull off amazing design ideas. In fact, when there’s not a ton of room to work with, some people get extra clever and figure out all sorts of ways to make the most of every corner. Check out three little that prove square footage is just a number.

SMALL HOUSE
BIG STYLE
Hello, wisteria! Twice-a-year trims keep the vine from overwhelming the home.
1,400 sq. ft. a great fit for a family Sometimes, less space is better when you have kids. A Portland, OR, bungalow proves it.
P
arents often wish for more room for their family. Not Nicole Wear and Calle Holmgren. “We wanted to simplify life, instead of getting overtaken by chores and maintenance—more lawn to mow, more house to clean,” says Nicole. Three years ago, they traded in their 2,500-squarefoot new build for a smaller 1923 Craftsman bungalow. Although they adored the intact original details, the neglected interior begged for modern touches. Nicole is from California and Calle is from Sweden, and they married their cultures to create a light, bright Cali–Scandi look. Last July, Baby Mio joined siblings Jade and Isla. Nobody misses that extra 1,100 feet. “The rainy weather means we’re often gathered around our fireplace, chatting, reading, or playing board games,” says Nicole. “For us, downsizing freed up family time.” PHOTOGRAPHS BY CHRISTOPHER DIBBLE STYLED BY HEATHER BULLARD

living room To keep things interesting but not busy (key in a smaller house), Nicole combined pieces with funky wood bases—a West Elm sofa and coffee table and Salvation Army chairs that she had reupholestered. They’re grounded by a punchy rug from Shkoon Shop. The couple regularly changes up the art on the mantel. “It’s unexpected to have bold pieces in an older home, and it adds life,” says Nicole. Those are Dala painted horses on the coffee table, a traditional Swedish craft.
Chairs with backs you can see through help a space seem roomier.

dining room The dining room may be made for meals, but it’s also a prime play space. The storage units along the wall are filled with toys, and Jade and Isla build fairy houses and magical cities here. “We didn’t want them playing in their rooms behind closed doors—this creates coziness,” says Nicole.
Custom-built storage benches don’t look bulky thanks to their tall legs.

kitchen “I thought I liked open floor plans, until I got this kitchen—it’s closed off from the dining room, and eating without seeing the mess from cooking is great!” says Nicole. She painted the window frames black, and now, next to the white subway tile, they play off the existing checkerboard floor. New brass hardware on the cabinets matches the original handles on the windows. The mat is from Target. HGTV Magazine 47

isla and jade’s room “When a room is 9 by 11 feet, you need stuff that you’re truly drawn to or else it’ll feel like clutter,” says Nicole. The girls chose the dotted bedding by Cotton On, and Nicole paired it with an equally exciting diamond-esque rug from Rugs USA. Just for fun, she attached a strip of the room’s wallpaper on the top bunk’s rail. A basket from a secondhand store got a new life as a hamper.

living room Velvet furniture pops prettily next to white walls and black window frames. Putting the violet daybed (from Joybird) and moss green sectional (from West Elm) diagonally across from each other brought balance to the room. “We joke that the daybed is the world’s most expensive dog bed because it’s where our dog, Alfie, hangs,” says Agatha.
1,475 sq. ft. three floors of chic There’s no shortage of star pieces in an Austin, TX, home.
W
hen Agatha June and Jeremy Erwin bought a 975-square-foot bungalow in Austin, TX, back in 2008, they had all the room they needed. But over time both craved more creative space (Agatha’s business is home-based; Jeremy is a musician). Local design-build firm Hatch Works found the solution literally right outside their door: The lot was big enough to build another house on it—one that was about 500 square feet larger. Agatha and Jeremy eventually turned their former home into an Airbnb. High ceilings and loads of windows make the new place incredibly airy, and it’s infused with the couple’s eclectic boho style. “We love every single spot,” says Agatha. “When you don’t have a giant house, that’s huge.”

kitchen “I wasn’t sure about putting shelves in front of the windows at first, but Agatha sold me on the benefits of having extra storage with all the light shining through,” says Jeremy. The effect is made even cooler because the shelves are anchored by a striking 65-inch-tall custom hood. Bringing in other wood tones, including oak floors and chevron paneling on the island, boosts the warmth. Narrow pantry for the win!

dining nook The ideal li’l spot for a banquette was built off the living room. This seating may look custom-made, but Agatha and Jeremy lucked out with West Elm benches that fit just right, plus a table from Rove Concepts. For impact, they had the walls and ceiling painted black (Black Magic by Sherwin-Williams). With windows on all three walls, the nook doesn’t feel cave-ish at all.

master bath “A separate tub and shower were the necessities; the double vanity was a bonus,” says Agatha. Design firm Hatch Works was able to squeeze the couple’s entire wish list into this narrow but long space, keeping the vibe natural with a gray-green floating vanity (painted Pewter Green by Sherwin-Williams) and matte black terra-cotta tiles by Clé. A hand-punched brass Moroccan pendant, found on Etsy, and brass fixtures add a little glam.

living room Two distinct hangout areas make the room seem more expansive and welcoming. Ashleigh had the built-in painted blue (Oceanside by SherwinWilliams) to help define the dining area, which has a table and chairs from Zuo. She grounded the other side of the room with a sunny Surya rug. A sofa with a chaise means extra seating; it’s from Joybird. “And there’s plenty of room for me and Ron to stretch out,” says Laureen. 1,600 sq. ft. lots of room for friends This Rocky River, OH, cottage is the perfect size for two—and a good party.
O
ne of Laureen and Ron Nowakowski’s goals for retirement was to entertain more. “We love having friends and family over for dinner,” says Laureen. The couple had been living in New Jersey and decided to move back to Ohio, where they’re from. But the cute little cottage they had their eyes on in Rocky River was, well, a little cottage. Laureen remembers telling her book club that there wouldn’t be room to fit many guests in their new dining room. “They assured me I could do buffets,” she says. Ultimately, the house’s architectural charms won her and Ron over. They worked with designer Ashleigh Clark to maximize space, reno the kitchen, and refresh rooms with paint, wallpaper, and new furniture in punchy blues and yellows. Laureen was quick to tally up the hosting possibilities: “There are 27 places to sit!” she says. And she’s happiest when they’re all filled up.

As with most peel-andstick styles, these wipe clean with a damp cloth and last until you remove them. modern graphic These faux tiles are self-adhesive vinyl—think of them as giant stickers. Simply peel off the backing paper and place them side by side (you’ll have no grout lines, as shown here). Or you can adhere them to existing tile, and your old backsplash’s grout will remain visible. They come in a range of sizes; these 8-inch-square ones deliver a big impact. Definitely order a few more pieces than you need in case a cut doesn’t turn out quite right.
