THE

Transformation to Hamptons LOOK

Axent ™ Trims Dulux White On White

IT WAS A SIMPLE BRIEF. THE OWNERS JUST WANTED A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY HOME. Three Birds Renovations took the keys and envisioned a youthful twist on a coastal Hamptons style. Built in the 1970’s in Sydney’s Hills district, the finishes made the home look dark and dated. However, the gabled roof line had potential to become a stunning feature. The triangular brick gables were given a classic look by cladding over them in HardieFlex™ Sheets and vertical lengths of Axent™ Trim in Dulux White on White. Meanwhile, a clean, contemporary look was created below each gable with James Hardie’s Stria™ Cladding in Dulux Grey Pail. The result is a fresh, charming and definitely beautiful home. SUNSHINE DAYS

Summer in Australia comes into full force in February. Long, sultry days that blur into evening, drinks on the deck, slides, sunshine and that permanent sunscreen sheen. And, at home, doors flung open if you’re by the coast, or latched shut with aircon blazing, for those of us more landlocked. I’ll be spending this month dreaming of my forever home (we’re in the market to buy), with the ubiquitous pool the No.1 inclusion on my husband’s wish list. For something that’s supposed to be in every Australian backyard, it’s in very few for sale in my neighbourhood. With it looking like we might have to install one ourselves, it’s perfect timing to explore how to make a pool happen – check out the feature on page 132, and find out how much it’s going to cost. Also this month, we’re taking a trip over to the Greek isles. Inspired by her recent holiday (a destination-wedding-meets-belated-honeymoon for our very deserving style editor), Fiona has re-created that tantalisingly beautiful Grecian feel in an inspiring decorating feature, from page 38. The fresh, bright white-on-white palette, with hints of cooling blues with lots of texture, brings a sense of calm and serenity. It hits just the right note for interiors at this time of year. To continue the island vibe, we celebrate the flavours of the Mediterranean, with a delicious Greek feast (page 142). And, for the first time in quite some time, we’re sharing our Magic Makeovers special in this issue – a bumper collection of 10 rooms set to inspire you to update your space. At HB, we’re all about discovering the possibilities of your home – and these projects highlight just how much life can change, once that little reno is done. Sometimes a few tweaks can really change the function of a room, and in that way, have a real impact on your lifestyle – like the formerly drab storage area that was reinvented as a bedroom-meets-nursery, on page 168. Enjoy the issue.

How did you get your start as a florist? Kate: “I started as a florist a week before Valentine’s Day over 20 years ago and instantly fell in love with flowers! I was studying interior design at the time and was offered a job by my local florist (and friend) who needed an extra set of hands over that crazily busy period.” What are your tips for making flowers last longer? “Buy from top-quality florists who source the very best and freshest flowers. It pays to spend a fraction more to get flowers that last twice as long! Recut stems on a 45-degree angle and refresh the vase water daily.” How do you make your arrangements stand out? “Essentially by not following what every other florist is doing! We make a concerted effort to ‘think tank’ together as a team and create our own individual designs.” Describe the perfect bouquet for Valentine’s Day. “Lately we’re loving designs that feature masses of tall smoke bush foliage, reflexed red roses, pink or green hydrangeas and oversized monstera leaves. Another fun and elegant option is a combination of blush phalaenopsis orchid stems designed with lush foliages.” Why are flowers considered the language of love? “Flowers speak when words fall short. While every flower has its own meaning, they’re known for their beauty, fragility and fleeting nature – making them the ultimate luxury gift.” Visit katehillflowers.com.au.

risbane is no longer seen solely as the gateway to the Sunshine State’s surf beaches – it’s now a thriving hotspot in itself. A wave of boutiques, Instagrammable restaurants and chic hotels has washed over Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley – just to the north of the city’s CBD – in response to a restless rustle for change. Don’t fret though: the laid-back Queensland holiday atmosphere remains, and is seen in the new spaces’ green lawns, coastal colour palettes and relaxed indoor-outdoor vibe. Choose between wandering down leafy streets speckled with enticing stores, or kicking back by the river at the new hotspot Howard Smith Wharves (HSW), but one thing is certain – this precinct is stepping up its style game.

SHOP 1. Arc and Family After starting out with a pot plant stall at design and art market Finders Keepers, husband and wife duo Benjamin and Ashleigh Keily brought their hand-painted creations to James Street in 2017, so if you’re passionate about plants, head here. Inside, terrariums and banana palms peek out from beautiful pots covered in bold geometric patterns and foliage wallpaper prints. Pass through their cactus courtyard El’ Rosa (top left) on your way out to be immersed in an aesthetic pink paradise. Visit: 85 James St, Fortitude Valley. Bookmark: arcandfamily.com.au.

3. ARC Dining At the quieter end of the HSW precinct, a modern glass structure is nestled against the riverside cliffs. Despite the impressive fig tree taking centre stage, this particular glasshouse is not a botanical mecca for green thumbs, but rather a stylish restaurant. The menu reads like a royal feast, with unique dishes ranging from spanner crab to goose prosciutto, and is sustainably sourced from local farmers. Wash it all down with one (or three!) of 400 handcrafted wines from a lengthy list curated by sommelier Ian Trinkle. Unsurprisingly, the decor – and gallery wall – is just as delicious as the dishes, with an eclectic collection of mismatched chairs and a black marble centre table featured in the dining pavilion. To top it off, floor-to-ceiling windows provide a panoramic view of Story Bridge. Visit: 5 Boundary St, Fortitude Valley. Bookmark: arcdining.com.au.

4. Mr Percival’s Overwater Bar Named after the pelican in the classic Australian book Storm Boy, this opulent waterside bar is flying high as Fortitude Valley’s go-to destination for afternoon aperitifs and Sunday soirees. Tucked beneath the Story Bridge, Mr Percival’s opened its doors in late 2018 with a unique octagonal shape and dreamy design by Brisbane interior decorator Anna Spiro. As for the cuisine, head chef Damien Styles has fashioned a menu of decadent fresh seafood, salads and vegetable sides. Pair fried zucchini fritters with a signature cocktail or tap beer supplied by the neighbouring Felons Brewing Co. Visit: 5 Boundary St, Fortitude Valley. Bookmark: mrpercivals.com.au.

9 WHAT TO PACK

The Sunshine State always lives up to its name, so the first thing in your suitcase should be swimwear (and lots of it!). The tropical climate inspires lengthy, scorching summers and short, warm winters, so whichever season you visit, expect to be ensconced in a breezy air of holiday vibes. A broad-rimmed straw hat is essential, paired with laid-back linen and slip-on sandals. Take a deep breath. You are on holiday, after all.

HOW TO GET THERE

Brisbane is perfect for a weekend getaway, with flights from Sydney merely 90 minutes from take-off to touchdown, while departing from Perth takes just four hours flight time. The ticket prices fluctuate depending on the weather, so for a less expensive seat, book for February, but prepare for severe heat in thunderstorm season. Prime time in the dryer months will set you back about $350 return. Once you’ve landed, Fortitude Valley is a mere 15 minutes in a taxi from Brisbane Airport, costing about $40.

PHOTOGRAPHY (INSET, BOTTOM LEFT) SEAN FENNESSY.

Surrounded by lavish labels in the heart of James Street, The Calile is Australia’s first urban resort. Architects Richards and Spence were inspired by hot-weather cities like Miami and Rio De Janeiro, designing the 175-room hotel with Queensland’s tropical climate in mind. Open-air spaces, a glamorous lap pool and swaying palms set the scene outdoors, while modernist interiors boast a soothing colour palette with brass and marble finishes, inviting you to slip into custom linen robes and fall victim to serenity. Don’t check out without going to the Kailo wellness spa to complete your sanctuary experience. Visit: 48 James Street, Fortitude Valley. Bookmark: thecalilehotel.com.

mma Gale first travelled to Africa at the age of 15, when she journeyed through Kenya and Zimbabwe on a three-week safari and fell in love with the scenic continent. “These are the life-changing moments that make us who we are,” explains the NSW-based artist of visiting tribal villages and spotting incredible wildlife – unrivalled experiences that ultimately set Emma on her own creative path, sparking a passion for travel and the inspiration it brings. From Africa to Bangalow, which she now calls her home, Emma pursues her passion for African culture through acrylic paintings and handcrafted ceramics. Her coveted canvases can be found at hotspots such as Byron Bay’s The Atlantic hotel. The uplifting works are all created in Emma’s

of school) to Egypt. In the capital city of Cairo, she devoted two years to establishing the Tukul Craft Workshop aimed at nuturing Sudanese refugees. “We taught them to make items and created a store where things could be sold,” says the keen traveller. “The experience was challenging but also very rewarding.” Her global lifestyle has clearly influenced her textural paintings, which capture everyday vignettes from African and Caribbean culture. Emma says she is intrigued by “the simple things in life, like daily routines, the local way of life, the colours and foods of different countries”. Alongside painting Mexican fruit bowls and African fishermen, she also shifts from canvas to clay. “Ideas flow and sometimes if they don’t

They were longing for an escape from the urban bustle of Sydney, where Emma honed her artistic skills working as an assistant to a graphic designer, and also presenting an array of solo exhibitions including two with Fenton & Fenton. After her initial trip to Africa, the maker deepened her obsession with the continent when she bought a one-way plane ticket (two years out

They have no set rules and I can play with new shapes.” The artist describes her second medium as heavy and gritty, lending a tribal rawness to her sculptures: “In other words, they are not delicate!” In late 2019, Emma returned to Africa to give back to the place that influenced her creative career. In Ethiopia, she worked with Australian non-profit organisation Create Impact to raise funds for education and health care. “Ethiopia is beautiful but poor and we can actually make a difference,” she says, in a sign that her lifelong love affair with Africa is far from over.

TOP RIGHT: “Clay is a different medium to painting, which is great, as it’s a nice balance and variety between the two different practices,” says Emma, pictured here kneading clay. BOTTOM LEFT: Emma draws inspiration from magazines, artwork and her moodboard.

LAID-BACK ISLAND LIFE

PRIORITY PLAN

UWHEN YOU’RE ON THE HUNT FOR YOUR DREAM HOME, SET YOUR PRIORITIES BEFORE YOU HIT THE INSPECTION CIRCUIT TO KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE IN ASSOCIATION WITH

I

t’s happened to the best of us: you turn up to a house inspection on the hunt for a modern twobedder with parking, but find yourself so enamoured by the home’s soaring period ceilings that all your pre-considered requirements fly out the pretty sash windows. Compiling a prioritised wish list will help separate your needs from your wants, and keep you on track in the search for your dream home.

A DV E RT I S E M E N T

GET VISUAL We’re not suggesting that manifestation is the answer to all your property aspirations, but visualisation is a savvy starting point. Envision your perfect home in all its glory – the size, the style, the suburb… Keep it semirealistic (shelve your Tuscan villa pipedreams for now), but still think freely. This will help tap into your desires and get you thinking about how you want to live. Sure, ocean views may fall outside your budget, but perhaps you’d settle instead for easy access to a beach or bay. Scrawl down all your ideas to refer back to later.

ADD THE NICE-TO-HAVES Below your must-haves, start noting down the features you deem appealing, but not essential. A walk-in wardrobe? You wouldn’t turn it down, but it’s not make

or break. It might be the same for a pool. Interior features could also fall into this category – think hardwood flooring and stone countertops, as well as central airconditioning or a fireplace. Check in with your above-mentioned visualisation notes as you go, picking out the elements that are enticing, but also attainable.

CONSULT THE EXPERTS Finally, round out your list with a little expert intel. The agents at real estate organisation Century 21 will share some “value” items to consider tacking onto your list. As the name suggests, these are features that will add value to your property over time. Think a great bathroom, dualpane windows or proximity to top schools. While these items shouldn’t take over your wants and wishes, they’re nevertheless worth keeping in mind as you navigate the inspection circuit (now armed with a handy priority list, so you never swerve off course again!).

GO BACK TO BASICS Important considerations are the minimum number of bedrooms, the number of bathrooms, and their minimum size. Other must-haves might include a garden or deck, off-street parking or an internal laundry. Location may be paramount – perhaps you want to be within walking distance of your children’s school – or maybe you have your heart set on a certain cluster of suburbs. Also consider liveability: is renovating an option, or are you keen to find a home and move straight in?

LABOUR OF LOVE Pops of sunshine pierce Monique’s signature

all-white colour scheme at ‘La Casa Bianca’, the swoon-worthy three-level family home on the northern beaches she and husband Andrea brought back to life during a meticulous four-year renovation. “There are always little subtle touches of yellow in the house,” says Monique, who loves relaxing with her family in her Malawi Cane double hanging chair, sitting outside the couple’s bedroom (below). “Nutella loves to swing on the hanging chair with Mati and I,” adds Monique, pictured opposite with daughter, Mati, four, and labrador Nutella, one of the family’s four pets. The front door, dressed in Dulux Dandelion Yellow (opposite), sings against exterior walls in Dulux Lexicon 15 per cent. Greenery in pots by The Pot Warehouse adds a final flourish to the scene-stealing entrance. >

a glorious place to dine (below), flowing out from the living room. Malawi Cane Traditional single chairs and seat pads in White set the scene for a long lunch, while pieces from Coastal Drift (the ‘Ilala’ woven mirror tray and ‘Buhera’ bowl) enhance the vista’s raw appeal. The previous owners’ use of a yellow-and-white awning inspired Monique to introduce yellow as a motif inside and outside the family home.

FEBRUARY 2020

O

ne week before she was due to give birth, Monique and her husband, Andrea, were sitting in her obstetrician’s waiting room when their solicitor called: their offer on a dilapidated 1950s home with a heavenly view on Sydney’s northern beaches had been accepted. Buying a home had not been on the agenda for the expectant parents, who were about to start “a huge renovation” of their cottage in the eastern suburbs. “We were literally a week from putting bulldozers through,” says Monique who, with Andrea, had inspected the beach house on a whim. “We saw its previous glory years that had been left to ruin,” she recalls. “We had the vision to be able to return it to glory – and to take it to another level, as well.” The spectacular result, renamed ‘La Casa Bianca’ – in homage to Andrea’s Italian background – is testament to their unwavering commitment to that vision. Across four years, Monique – the founder and director of homewares company Malawi Cane and wholesaler Coastal Drift – and her husband transformed the rundown house with its green-and-violet walls into a luxurious four-bedroom, three-bathroom home that beckons all who step beyond the sunny yellow front door to kick their shoes off and unwind. With its white walls and all-white floorboards enlivened by tactile rattan, wood and soft furnishings adorned with tribal prints that nod to Malawi-born Monique’s heritage, her signature style is “rustic luxe”, according to the chic homeowner. “It gives us permission to have our relaxed lifestyle, while still having an appreciation for beautiful design and finishes,” she says. The slow-and-steady transformation didn’t overwhelm Monique and Andrea, even in the early days when daughter Mati, now four, was a newborn and they were juggling the works on their original home in the east of Sydney (they moved into this house when Mati was six months old). Yet, Monique laughs off any suggestion she’s a home-reno superhero, though she’s completed at least 10. “Renovations, construction and interiors is just in some people’s blood,” she says. Since downing tools last July, the couple has been savouring the fruits of their hard work. “One of my favourite times of day is when it’s us as a family all up in the master suite,” says Monique, painting a picture of how they greet the new day from the gently swaying balcony chair. “We all – dogs, cats, humans – hang out here every morning, coffees and milk in hand, enjoying the sunrise from the ocean horizon year-round and spotting whales. It’s a tranquil and private family space where we share our first hour of every morning and where only we create the memories,” she says.

KITCHEN

Custom-made doors (with hardware from Hepburn Hardware) are a focal point of the kitchen island (above, by an Ikea stool) and conceal a surprise. “Our TV’s in there,” says Monique with a laugh. The island benchtop (left, showcasing crockery from Mud Australia) is restored Tasmanian oak with a dark stain treatment. “There are always neighbours popping over, or people visiting from the east, or people coming for weekends,” says Monique who, along with Andrea, regularly entertains. Nonetheless, the kitchen’s six-burner Ilve oven has been getting a rest lately. “We always used to be a big ‘roasts’ sort of family, and now everything’s pizza!” explains Monique, whose Mediterranean courtyard features a popular pizza oven. >

LIVING ROOM “My husband used to spend quite a bit of time in

the south of Italy when he was a child, so I guess there’s that sort of rustic feel, and any of our interior decor has come from collections throughout our lives, and things that have meaning to both of us,” says Monique. Anchored by a Lifestyle Collective sofa adorned with a Beachwood chunky European linen throw and cushions including, second from left, the Walter G ‘Swazi Mud’, Coastal Drift ‘Zimbabwe Block White’ and Eadie Lifestyle ‘Simpatico’ in Mustard, the light-filled living space (below & opposite, below far right) brims with cross-cultural mementos. Atop a Beachwood coffee table, a traditional parat (plate) and a coral, both from Home With Grace, draw the eye, while the tones of a rug from Home On Darley call to mind driftwood and a stormy sea.

She jumps around on it every morning.”

GUEST RETREAT

Lucky guests of ‘La Casa Bianca’ enjoy their own fully appointed retreat on the home’s lower level, which incorporates an alfresco dining space featuring Malawi Cane Traditional single chairs in White (far left, around a table topped by Coastal Drift’s ‘Betty’ woven tray). For Monique and Andrea, who welcome a steady stream of visitors all-year long, the space plays an important role in their lifestyle, yet “the home is completely adaptable,” says Monique. “You can use the different areas at different ages and for different needs as your lifestyle requires,” she says. >

WE LOVE...

white on white

“Don’t be afraid of white,” is Monique’s mantra. Her interior walls are painted in a custom blend, while the white floorboards “are the easiest thing to look after,” she exclaims. “Everyone’s like, ‘How do you do it? You’ve got so many animals, and a child.’ But yes, it’s straight white concrete paint. Really simple.” Try Berger Jet Dry Heavy Duty Gloss, $103, bunnings.com.au.

MAIN BEDROOM Comfortable bedlinen from In The Sac

and a white ‘Fringe’ rectangular cushion from West Elm create a cloud effect in the home’s main suite (above), while Leilah cushions mirror the moody sky in an Africanologie print above the bed (which is strewn with a Portia cotton throw and ‘Lila’ linen bathrobe, both from Papaya). A bench from Home With Grace echoes the natural tones in a Coastal Drift planter basket and keeps essentials within reach, while a striking pair of old African doors (one visible, above) bookend the room. “They’ve lived different lives for different purposes,” says Monique. “Here, they’re parted as if they’re the doors into the ensuite bathroom.”

MAIN BALCONY The balcony beyond the couple’s

bedroom offers a cleverly built-in couch on one end (above). A Malawi Cane Traditional open-weave table displays a Sondu ‘Iringa’ basket from Papaya (used as a plant holder) and is the ideal spot for a morning coffee. FAMILY BATHROOM “We jackhammered three layers of tiles away from the floor in here,” recalls Monique, who designed the stunning concrete vanity (below), which has Brodware tapware in Weathered Brass Organic and a Nero Stone sink accessorised with Coastal Drift’s ‘Tiffin’ basket, against a Beaumont Tiles splashback. A pendant by Home With Grace completes the starkly beautiful space. >

that Monique calls “the heart of the home” (left), a Moroccan-tile table from Doug Up On Bourke, Malawi Cane Traditional single chairs and seatpads, cushions and throw from Eadie Lifestyle all work together to invite guests to take a seat, relax a little and forget their cares. “It’s where everyone congregates,” she says. As well as a place to soak up the sun in winter, this versatile outdoor zone “is just a really lovely setting for evening,” sums up Monique. CUBBY HOUSE Bringing Mati’s storybook-

pretty cubby house (below) to life was a true family affair: Monique designed and painted it (in Dulux Lexicon 15 per cent with Dulux Dandelion Yellow barn-style door, mimicking the family home) and Andrea constructed the 4m x 2.5m structure, with help from Mati. The cubby even had its own house-warming party! “All the neighbours came because they’d watched us do this eight-month construction,” says Monique, adding a neighbour made the bunting as a cubby-warming gift.

In the dedicated guests’ area that lies on the lower level, visitors step up to a raised sleeping space (right), where they can nod off amid the sounds of the ocean in calming white and spare surrounds. “The rusticness definitely comes from both our childhoods,”says Monique of the home’s style. “You know, if you put the current house in a field in Tuscany it would be a farmhouse. It’s just coastal because of the location, really.” Zara Home linen and decorative cushions from Coastal Drift amp up the comfort levels, while a round mirror (seek similar from Horgans) enhances the ample sense of light and space.

HOME OFFICE “We call it a den,” says Monique of the office, where Mati is pictured holding court from a Malawi chair in Dark Brown that’s paired with an Ikea desk (the cute seat outside is the children’s Malawi chair from Malawi Cane). As with the rest of the home, this is a multi-purpose area that can mould itself to the user’s needs. “It’s an escape room for anyone wanting peace, or time alone for either work, catching up on a book or watching a few episodes!” adds Monique. >

EXTERIOR

During the lengthy renovation, Monique and Andrea worked just as hard outdoors as in. “We got rid of a whole layer of jungle in one whole level of the garden – we re-turfed all three levels in the garden, built the cubby house and put in fencing,” says Monique, whose exterior renovation included landscaping, building planter beds in the courtyard (below), and replacing aged weatherboards. What do you love most about renovating? Monique: “It’s about seeing the vision and making sure that you leave a property how it’s intended to be, and giving a home the love it deserves. They’re going to be here a long time after us.” What’s been a favourite gathering? “My 40th birthday. We turned the whole courtyard into an alpine chalet and après-ski area!” Your top decorating tip? “Never be scared of white. Chuck sofa covers in the washing machine. Repaint walls. Situated at the front of the house to capture northern rays, the living zone (opposite) is highlighted by a pitched ceiling and expanses of white. “The home feels so open and airy, with a real sense of space,” says Lucy (pictured above with one-year-old Louis). “One of the things I love most about this home is that it can be opened up on so many sides, which keeps it cool through summer,” she adds. “You can enjoy a beautiful sea breeze in the afternoons and hear the ocean when it’s quiet in the evening.” >

A vacant parcel of land a short stroll from the town centre and the sea proved the starting point for the couple’s dream holiday home. “We loved the proximity of the block to both the shops and cafes, as well as to the beach,” says Lucy. “Everything is within walking distance and there’s a real community feel to the area.” From the beginning, too, the family’s lifestyle played a key role in the design by Auhaus Architecture. To capture the best of the Australian sun, Lucy and Simon ventured outside the standard box and green-lit a reversed layout. The result? A cleverly-positioned ‘back to front’ house with the north-facing garden, alfresco deck and living spaces making a luminous first impression at the front and tranquil sleeping quarters at the rear. “The design is all about making the most of the northern light,” explains Lucy. Inside the home, lofty raked ceilings coupled with crisp white walls and expanses of glass form an arresting union, imparting a definitive sense of space and airiness. Beckoning from many of the rooms, two leafy internal courtyards offer verdant settings to take time out. “It looks like an undulating green carpet,” says Lucy with a smile. Inspired by the pristine coastal surrounds, Lucy and Simon took a minimalist approach to the home’s finishes and fixtures. Interiors expert Dea Jolly assisted with the decor and furnishings, introducing a carefully balanced mix of timeless Scandi-style pieces, with bursts of saturated colour added via beautiful contemporary works by Australian artists. “Dea was a huge help,” says Lucy. “She has a wonderful sense of style and it was reassuring to me to know that when we were making those big purchases, we were choosing things with the correct dimensions and colours, or textures,” she says. “It was also important not to choose pieces that would date too fast. I loved seeing everything come together.” Indeed, Lucy and Simon can well imagine one day making this their permanent home. Just as they hope it will remain the backdrop for laid-back getaways for generations well into the future.

Who stays here? Lucy, a talent manager; Simon, a financial adviser; and their three boys, Bailey, five, Charlie, three, and Louis, one. What are your favourite furniture pieces? “The Jardan ‘Sunny’ sofas in the living area. They’re just so comfy.” Any tips for keeping the home clean and tidy with three young boys? “Yes – use lots of sugar soap wipes! And have as much storage in the home as you can. You can’t be too precious – you have to live in a home.” What’s the family’s favourite way to spend a summer’s day? “We’ll wander down to the town first thing to get our coffee and head back again later in the day so the boys can get an ice-cream. In the meantime, we’ll pop down to the beach for a swim and the kids will play on the sand.”

COOL & CALM

High above the beaches of Cape Town is the sumptuous family home that elite South African interior designer Sumari Krige calls home. The view from the kitchen and dining area looks out to the front deck (below), with the Atlantic Ocean beckoning beyond. The Cortona outdoor table and Modena Low dining chairs by Borek are all from La Grange Interiors, designed for ultimate relaxation over long lunches and dinners alfresco. >

W

ith its panoramic views across the magnificent Atlantic Ocean, the terrace of Sumari’s Cape Town home could easily be the bow of a luxury cruise ship. Like the rest of the home, the terrace radiates understated elegance, but it’s not in any sense a ‘show space’. It’s all about the warmth and everyday ease of a practical family home, which Sumari, her property developer husband, Gerhard, and their children, Nicola, 11, and Luan, 10, have adored living in since it was completed two years ago. Built on a narrow double plot, the structure was designed by Archilab, an award-winning architectural practice based in Cape Town. “Our brief was quite simple really,” explains Sumari, whose company, La Grange Interiors, took care of interior finishes, joinery designs and soft furnishings. “We wanted a contemporary family home that takes full advantage of the views of the ocean. And we wanted the indoor-outdoor flow of the house to work well, with the two spaces complementing each other.” Sumari says that as the design of the house evolved, her ideas for the interior gradually took shape. Due to the constraints of the site’s narrow footprint, it has five levels linked by a stunning central staircase boasting glass balusters and dark wood details (there’s also a lift for convenience). “I wanted the staircase to be a prominent design feature,” she says, explaining that all of the action takes place on the fourth floor. Mostly open-plan, this space includes the kitchen, scullery, bar and living-and-dining area that opens

through onto the expansive terrace – and a much-loved plunge pool. There’s also a landscaped rear courtyard. The separate areas are designed to “seamlessly blend into each other, creating a very relaxed and intimate environment for entertaining and family time,” says Sumari, who enhanced the laid-back, yet refined, atmosphere by combining dark, textured timber floors with black stone and taupe carpets, meticulously layered with reworked Persian rugs and kilims. Moody shades of charcoal, anthracite and stone abound, with splashes of colour throughout that can easily be updated. It’s quite a departure from the decor of your average beach house, with Sumari deliberately avoiding any hint of standard nautical cliches. Rather than accentuating the harsh afternoon sun with bright whites and blues, she has instead underplayed it, introducing a relaxing sense of cosiness and intimacy. “Even our ‘white’ walls are a very soft, warm shade of white,” she explains. Another key technique was to use fewer – but oversized – pieces of furniture in order to help complement the generously proportioned spaces. In the main bedroom – and indeed almost everywhere in the house, including the living spaces and her covetable top-floor home office – Sumari’s signature layers of tactile textures draw the eye, and hand. “I love fabric that gives you the feeling you need to run your fingers over the surface,” she says. “To me, the layering of contrasting textures is one of the most important ingredients in soft furnishing. And I feel that texture adds character and depth.” The evidence in her sumptuous, yet intimate, home suggests she’s absolutely right.

LIVING & DINING AREA The open-plan living, dining and kitchen area (top left & opposite) has an inky colour palette that’s all about

understated elegance and easy living. The oversized ‘Jonny’ hanging pendants add a dramatic touch (Zanui’s ‘Gaia Elegance’ pendant light is similar), as do the solid oak ‘Ed’ dining table, ‘Alfonso’ dining chairs and ‘Tomaz’ sofa (try the Cleon sofa from Blu Dot for a similar style), all from La Grange Interiors. KITCHEN The boldly sculptural kitchen island (top right) features a gas hob by Smeg and an Ottavo mixer tap from Lavo. Sumari designed the sensational joinery that takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape. The ‘L’Usine’ bar stools by District Eight (for similar, try the ‘Bistro’ bar stools from Vavoom) add a textural balance (and retro vibe) while the Dutz glass vase from La Grange Interiors reflects the super-sized proportions.

TAKING A BREAK The US East Coast wasn’t too far

from the minds of Anne-Maree and Luke as they designed their hilltop home in Brisbane. “Being a corner block, we wanted it to be beautiful from every angle, even the side,” says Anne-Maree, who mixed 25 test pots to come up with the striking blue exterior (for similar, try British Paints Kara Sea). The custom-made criss-cross balustrades by Layton Construction and sash windows by Duce Timber Windows & Doors are US style, as are the James Hardie Scyon Linea weatherboards (below & opposite). Luke relaxes in an Adirondack chair with Bandhini cushions. >

KITCHEN The beautifully designed kitchen has an island topped in Quantum Quartz Alpine White as its centrepiece (below), with Anne-Maree opting to keep the Shaws ‘Lancaster’ ceramic sink, teamed with a Nicolazzi Adore mixer (both sourced from Reece), to the side of the kitchen, rather than on the island. A ‘Darlana’ linear pendant from The Montauk Lighting Co provides light down the island’s length, while the upholstered ‘Bobbin’ stools from Anne-Maree’s own store, Cape Cod Home, create comfort for the whole family. Cabinetry by Germancraft Cabinets is 2-pac in Dulux Lexicon Quarter with hardware from Castella’s Century range, while the prettiest of duck egg blues is showcased in brick tiles from the Urban Tile Company. This kitchen is a true entertainer’s delight – behind the main wall is a hidden scullery, flanked by entrances to the butler’s pantry and laundry, while the cooker is both crowd-pleasing and handsome. “A must-have was the Falcon Deluxe,” says Anne-Maree. “I’ve been coveting a navy blue cooker ever since pinning one to my moodboard 15 years ago.”

he grand proportions, classic lines and clean, elegant finishes of American architecture have always pulled on the heartstrings of Brisbane real estate agent and mother-of-two Anne-Maree. “It reminds me of the homes we drew as kids,” she reveals with a smile. “Pitched roofs, muntin windows and smoke coming out of the chimney.” But it wasn’t until Anne-Maree was living in an inner-city apartment with her husband Luke and their two young sons that she fell in love with the work of Atlanta-based architect C. Brandon Ingram and decided to build a big American-style house of her family’s own in the Queensland capital city. Style decision made, finding the right block proved to be a challenge, as it needed to be wide enough to support her vision of a sweeping double-gable abode. Eventually, the couple

spotted a double corner block, just 10 minutes east of the city. “It was on a hill, with beautiful suburban and city views and was perfect, so we snapped it up,” says Anne-Maree. The intention was to start building immediately, but as often happens, life got in the way. Alongside raising their sons, Brynley, now 21, and Kristian, 17, Anne-Maree and Luke launched a local staging and real estate agency, Cape Cod Residential, which tapped into other people’s passion for American design and took off much faster than expected. Seven years passed before the couple bit the bullet. “It’s like having a baby; there’s never a right time, you just have to do it,” says Luke. During the wait, Anne-Maree had drawn up copious amounts of what she describes as “chicken scratch drawings”, which were passed on to their chosen architects, Invilla Design, to decipher and draw up for the family’s builder and trades. >

“The build itself took about a year,” says Anne-Maree. “We were still working in our business full-time, but thought it was imperative to be really present for the build as well, so we pretty much worked seven days a week for the entire year.” The hands-on approach was well worth it. “To see our vision come to life was amazing; it was even better than we expected,” she says. And, in what turned out to be a piece of fortuitous timing, the exquisite home was completed just in time to host eldest son Brynley’s 21st birthday party celebration. “It was a ‘Roaring Twenties’ themed party with everyone dressed to the nines,” recalls Anne-Maree. “We were able to comfortably accommodate over 100 people and it was such a success I was finding feathers danced loose from boas six months later!” With the big build behind them, the hard-working twosome have found a little more time to enjoy the house. “We designed it with ‘destinations’ in mind and it’s been a delight to explore them all,” says Anne-Maree of the home’s different zones throughout. “Whether that means morning coffee watching the sun come up in The Great Room, a glass of wine in the evening in the French garden or having family over for an impromptu dinner around the island.” Adds Luke: “It’s a beautiful house and we’re determined to enjoy it.”

THE GREAT ROOM The home’s formal lounge (below & opposite), dubbed ‘The Great Room’ in honour of its American-style heritage, was deliberately designed to be television-free. “We wanted to encourage quiet pursuits like reading, and it works,” says Luke. “We often find one of the boys stretched out on the sofa with a book.” Being on the east side of the house, this is also the couple’s favourite spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee while watching the sun come up. “We put a lot of effort into the design of this room as we hold meetings with potential clients here to showcase our style,” says Anne-Maree. “It works a treat.” Her luxe and layered decorating style includes rugs by Bayliss, a collection of custom cushions by Gatti Design, a Caribbean coffee table from Xavier Furniture and a plush, inky blue sofa (for similar, try the Bogart ‘Stitched’ in Old Navy by Globe West). THE GREAT OUTDOORS Former Melburnians Andy and Stephen have embraced a relaxed lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast hinterland. “It’s so secluded and peaceful, all we see is greenery and lots of wildlife,” enthuses Andy, pictured with daughter Izzy (above right) relaxing in one of the home’s many outdoor seating areas, furnished in a mix of cane and timber pieces from Eclectic Style. This easy, textural style is seen throughout the home and outdoors – case in point: a barnacle pot from Bedouin Traders (above left) atop a vintage Hungarian workbench on the deck, against a counterpoint of bright white. The Santoriniinspired pool (opposite & top right) is the ultimate splash zone with moulded walls and ‘Slip In’ sun loungers from Techno Plastics, while at the back (top left), a butterfly staircase is reminiscent of an old Queenslander. >

A

s is the case for many southerners who migrate north, it was the lure of the warmer weather that enticed Andy and Stephen to move from Victoria to Queensland with children Charlie, nine, and Izzy, seven. “I was sick of feeling the cold and I made a deal with Stephen that he could choose the location, but I’d have carte blanche on the interiors,” says Andy. Drawn to the Sunshine Coast, where they regularly holidayed, Stephen discovered a place that ticked all of their boxes – a 10-acre property enveloped in bush. Here, they could enjoy the serenity of living out of town, while being close enough to the beach to sink their toes into the sand during the weekends. Andy could also see incredible potential in the ’80s yellow-rendered farmhouse sitting on the block. “I wanted our home to be as light and bright as possible, so there was only one way to go – paint it all white,” she reflects. With expertise in project management and interiors, Andy organised for the entire top floor – featuring timber-panelled cathedral ceilings and timber floors – to be painted before they moved in. Within three months, the entire renovation was complete. “We changed every single surface – the tradies thought we were mad, but we had a vision and wecouldn’t be happier with how it turned out,” she says. Inspired by Andy’s Greek heritage and a love for Mediterranean architecture, the original basic interior was re-imagined through the introduction of moulded curves and arches. Rooms were layered with antique bleached Indian pieces and vintage finds, while fluoro strip lights were replaced with statement pendants, imbuing the home with an eclectic and global feel. For a unique bathroom look, existing tiles and dated fixtures were ripped out and the walls rendered in a smooth waterproof finish. In lieu of standard vanities, vintage Indian consoles were fitted with marble basins and Turkish taps. Andy retained the original footprint in the home’s kitchen, but transformed the space, with benchtops finished in hand-poured concrete, new timber cabinetry and a striking wall of open shelves. Downstairs, a storage room and garage space were converted into an additional guest room that opens out to the pool area, where you could easily be forgiven for thinking you’re in Santorini itself. “I love the look of flowing curves, so we had built-in rendered furniture created for the guest room, which flows outside to form the pool fencing and a seating area,” explains Andy. With their own pocket of rainforest on the block, as well as a creek and orchard, the family has truly taken to their new life. “Stephen loves driving around on his tractor,” says Andy. “On weekends we’ll do family walks to ‘check the boundaries’ and pick lemons. The wildlife here is next level.” The week they moved in they found a baby python curled up in a sofa, and a snake catcher has since been back several times. The family also takes delight in regularly spotting kangaroos, tiny pygmy possums, king parrots, frogs and wild ducks. “Living here gives us the best of both worlds – the bush with the beach nearby,” says Andy. “Stephen chose well; we love it here.” BACK DECK Andy and adorable chow-chow Ginger Rose make the most of the deck (top left), which was extended to run the full length of the house. Carefully selected cane chairs, plus a rustic bamboo umbrella from Ha’veli, create a relaxed resort vibe. “I’ve always wanted one,” explains Andy of the brolly. “The shape and hairy fronds remind me of the children’s storybook character Grugg.” OPEN LIVING AREA One of the big selling points was the home’s

open living area (left & opposite), with soaring Tasmanian oak ceilings. “The natural colour of the timber was beautiful, but I really wanted to go all-white and it completely transformed the place,” says Andy, who opted for Dulux Lexicon Quarter. “We even had all the windows, sliding door frames and balustrades spray-painted white, which made the greenery outside pop.” The house is filled with Jardan furniture, such as the ‘Nook’ sofa that sits alongside the ’70s leather slingbacks – try Fenton & Fenton. >

KITCHEN With its simple palette and tactile materials, the kitchen (top left, top right & opposite) is a casual hub where people instinctively gravitate. “I wanted to evoke the look of Chukum, which is a traditional limestone stucco used to render homes in Mexico,” says Andy. Opting for a local alternative, Rockcote was hand-trowelled to achieve the clay plaster look on the open shelving (above left). The concrete benchtops were tinted a light clay colour, while plywood was used to highlight the face of the serving bench and cleverly conceal the fridge. DINING With multiple informal dining spots (opposite), the family is spoilt for choice. Evening meals are often shared around the Jardan ‘Iko’ marble table teamed with ‘Barri’ chairs, while timber kitchen bar stools from Eclectic Style are the perfect place to perch for a quick bite at breakfast time. Rustic pendant lights, also sourced from Eclectic Style, punctuate the soaring raked ceiling. >

wo decades ago, the kitchen island began its meteoric rise from obscurity to kitchen hero, as the popularity of open-plan living exploded and homeowners started searching for new ways to delineate spaces. “By introducing a central stage for cooking, eating and entertaining, the island changed the role of the kitchen,” says brand manager Linda Hannah of Caesarstone. “An island serves many purposes – a food preparation space, storage, dining table, plus a place to install appliances such as the cooktop, oven, sink and dishwasher.” And, most importantly, a kitchen island gives you space for people to congregate and can turn the kitchen into the heart of the home. Read on for design ideas and expert advice to get your island right. >

The practical kitchen island-table hybrid (left) is gaining momentum, and in an open-plan home featuring a smaller footprint, it’s not hard to understand why this space-saving alternative is so popular. “In a space-starved interior, a ‘split level’ benchtop allows the design of an attractive eating area and more room for the adjoining living room space,” says interior designer Jane Thompson. “It also allows Mum and Dad to interact with the family while cooking, and keep an eye on the kids knee-deep in homework.”

with full access around its entire circumference, not impeded by any returns or extended from the wall,” says Linda Hannah of Caesarstone. “This provides maximum opportunity for the multiple roles an island bench can play in the everyday life of a busy kitchen.” If you’re designing the space from scratch, the working-triangle rule still rings true (this is the access between your cooktop, fridge and sink). “The most effective workspaces allow 1200mm between each of these stations,” says marketing manager Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle Kitchen.

pretty

Before you shop for stools or chairs, first decide whether your island will be used for casual perching or as your primary dining space: this will impact whether you opt to go with simple bar stools or something more sturdy with a back. “When choosing a style, try and match your kitchen aesthetic,” advises sales and retail director Susan Hasler of Freedom Kitchens. “If your kitchen is Hamptons style, natural timber stools will work beautifully. Modern and industrial more your style? Consider dark timbers with metallic finishes.” >

lighter-toned kitchen islands are set to take a back seat to dark, dramatic shades of black, punctuated by moody greys and light khaki. “Consumers are wanting more than the more conventional whites and warm whites, and moody hues in blacks and deep greys are definitely proving popular,” says Linda Hannah of Caesarstone.

When designing your dream island, measurement is key: it should be easy to move around, be at a suitable working height and be in proportion to the space around it. Aim for at least 900mm of space between the island and fixed items, and ideally 1200mm if that fixed item is a working part of the kitchen, such as your stove or sink. If you’re designing your island to accommodate stools (as above), leave at least 600mm between the bench and the wall. Standard height is about 900mm – 950mm is a good height for bar stools.

APPEAL surface As the kitchen blurs into the living space, there’s a move towards materials that add warmth while seamlessly blending into their surroundings – think natural stones, concrete, woodgrain and marble with beautiful veining. “The materials of the moment are definitely concrete and stone,” says Linda of Caesarstone. “The raw beauty and organic form of these natural materials add visual interest and look beautiful alongside metallics and timber.” For a cost-effective option, consider eschewing the real deal in favour of a laminate or quartz composite in a stone-inspired, woodgrain or marble look. These materials are non-porous and easy to clean. >

“Pack as much storage as you can into both sides of your kitchen island,” advises Linda Hannah of Caesarstone. On the side that faces the kitchen, aim to store kitchenware that you don’t necessarily need next to your appliances, such as Tupperware, bakeware and small appliances. If you choose to have storage on the exposed side, this is a fantastic place to keep everyday items that your guests and family can easily help themselves to, including glassware, placemats and condiments – as well as your most beautiful and browse-worthy cookbooks.

he laundry used to be the most underrated room of the home, but homeowners and designers alike are starting to prioritise practical and pretty design. “They are no longer the forgotten room of the house,” says interior designer Sally Rhys-Jones, founder of Rhys/Jones Interior Architecture. “People are making laundries just as beautiful as their kitchens, using the same materials and levels of thoughtfulness.” If a room is going to soak up our time with repetitive chores, it may as well be done in comfort and style. Here, we speak to the experts for divine inspiration.

B EFO RE YO U BEG IN

expert advice “To keep everything neat and tidy in open shelving, use baskets to hide detergent and cleaning products,” says Sally.

Think ahead – space is hard to come by in a laundry, so clever planning is the key to making the most of small layouts and discovering storage solutions. While planning, decide whether to incorporate an overflow behind the sink or a floor waste under the tiles to prevent flooding. Once the practical points are out of the way, interior designer Lysandra Fraser from The Design Duo suggests focusing on added luxuries such as underfloor heating, which can transform a laundry into a drying room. For storage, Sally recommends installing pull-out drawers underneath the sink to stash washing powders and liquids. Hanging racks look glamorous beneath floating shelves and cabinets, as pictured (left) in this space designed by Home By Belle. It’s practical, too, taking up much less space than a dedicated drying cupboard. >

LI GHT ING THE WAY

For interior designer and Electrolux ambassador Anna-Carin McNamara, a dream laundry is flooded with sunshine streaming through modern windows or sliding glass doors leading to an outdoor zone, such as in this space by Porter Davis (left, try Stegbar for similar doors). “Ample natural light and the integration of greenery immediately makes it a more pleasant room to be in,” says Anna-Carin. When natural lighting isn’t a possibility due to layout or location, there are still plenty of opulent options to dial up the brightness. “Using white joinery can really lighten up a laundry,” advises interior architect Sally Rhys-Jones, who opts for Dulux Lexicon Half paint.

“INCLUDE POWER POINTS IN THE FULL-HEIGHT CUPBOARDS, SO YOU CAN CHARGE SUCH AS STICK VACUUM CLEANERS”

Laundries are a prime area for multitasking. “It’s about how people live and how they can utilise the space really well,” says Dominique McAdam from Provincial Kitchens Home. “I incorporated a bar fridge into a laundry connected to a backyard, for easy access to drinks at barbecues.” If your laundry is sharing space with a powder room, interior designer Lysandra suggests hiding your toilet behind cabinetry so it isn’t a key feature. Looking to squeeze in a mudroom? Take flooring into account when making the laundry work double time – natural finish travertine tiles (right) are perfect for high-traffic areas.

f your ensuite has turned into a battleground for space, the solution may be a twin version. From ideal vanity size and fixtures, to maximising storage and perfecting the layout, here’s our expert guide to creating a harmonious dual zone that’s big on functionality and luxury.

PHOTOGRAPHY LISA COHEN

Personalisation is key to creating a twin ensuite – for a twin shower, opt for separate shower heads, mixers and a long niche to provide enough space for each of your products. A pair of mirrors above each basin will play on the twin theme, just as they do in this luxe space designed by The Design Duo (featuring Laufen ‘Ino’ counter basin from Reece). vanity volume

A double vanity with twin basins will mean no more stepping on each other’s toes at rush hour, but make sure the size is right, advises interior designer Naomi Nimmo of Nimmo Nielsen Collective. “Bench space and storage is often sacrificed with an additional basin, so we advise a minimum vanity width of 1500m,” says Naomi. “If space permits, bigger is better, with a sleek floating vanity 1800mm-2000mm wide ideal.” Keep surfaces clutter free by concealing power points in drawers and cabinets. “This enables you to keep your toothbrush or shaver charged and out of sight,” says Naomi.

Tip:

Install a combination of drawers, open shelving and cupboards to maximise your storage space and organisation.

Sharing space doesn’t have to mean sacrificing space – a clever layout means you can have it all. “When designing an ensuite for two people to use at once, good traffic flow is essential,” says industrial designer Luke Di Michiel of Caroma. Keep your vanity on one side and your wet zone on the other, and allow the space left to dictate the size of the bath. “Another good option for a more compact layout is a back-to-wall bath, which has a freestanding look with the practicality of an inset bath,” says bathroom marketing leader Daniela Santilli of Reece.

Tip:

Short on bench space? A timber bath bar (below) can double as a shelf – just save it for your most beautiful products.

tailored for two

Perfect finishing touches in the space to reflect your individual style and needs. “Recessing open shelving into a wall teamed with downlights can be a great spot to display perfume bottles or aftershave,” says Naomi. “Another option is to use a small tray beside each basin for a vase of flowers and favourite go-to products.” To keep track of whose towel is whose you may want to opt for two complementary colours. With a neutral palette, such as this one (left), add a pop of mustard or dusty pink in beautifully soft, luxurious towels to inject warmth and personality. >

shower in style

A shower big enough for two demands plenty of room. “Dedicated ‘wet zones’ that can accommodate twin showers and simply using a panel of frameless glass to contain water spray are a great option,” explains Luke Di Michiel of Caroma, who advises allowing a floor area of at least 900mm x 1800mm. Choose a shower screen with a matt black finish (try Stegbar) to give your bathroom style a more industrial edge. While the entry to a double shower is traditionally through the middle (seen left), if space permits, a great alternative is two entry points from either side of the wet zone, says Daniela Santilli of Reece. “This layout creates the ultimate practical solution for simultaneous showering,” she says.

For a more cohesive look, Naomi Nimmo of Nimmo Nielsen Collective suggests selecting tapware and accessories in the same finish and shape – try timeless chrome (as seen right in this GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens-designed space), brushed brass or nickel. “A rounder shape feels more feminine,” says Naomi. Well-positioned heated towel rails also deliver comfort when you need it. “Generally, two or three rails are ideal, installed opposite or beside the shower for ease of access,” she says. When shopping for mirrors, go large to maximise the space and enhance natural daylight. “The minimal investment creates maximum impact and also looks stunning backlit at night,” sums up Naomi.

P

oolside barbecues, early-morning swims and late-night dips: having a swimming pool in your backyard is the very definition of the great Australian dream. But pools are also one of the most expensive investments you’ll make as a homeowner, so it’s vital to do your research first. “Most people don’t understand how much a good-quality pool costs,” says principal architect and managing director Will Marcus of Argo. “Every backyard is different, and there are so many factors at play.” Turn over for everything you need to know before you buy. >

POOLSIDE PREP Before you start ringing around for quotes, think carefully about what you need from a pool. Do you want a resort-style backyard for staycations, a focal point for entertaining or a water feature to admire? “Size and location are also important factors,” says pool industry consultant Veda Dante. If you have kids, she recommends checking they can be supervised from indoor or outdoor entertaining areas, and that there’s adequate space for required fencing. Finally, take note of site considerations, such as underground sewers, drainage systems and utility pipes, as these will all impact the cost. “As well as the cost of the pool itself, there’s a long list of stuff every pool owner needs to budget for,” says Will Marcus of design firm Argo. “This includes council fees, pool safety fencing and gates, plumbing, a stormwater drainage system, retaining walls or an embankment treatment, electrical works for your filtration, and concourses and paths around the pool.” Depending on your backyard, you may also need the site levelled around the pool and, if you need rock excavation, there’ll be extra costs for bulk earth removal. Long-term, you’ll be paying more monthly for water and electricity, so make sure you factor in those costs. To avoid financial stress, Will says adding 20 per cent to your budget should cover unexpected bills.

BUDGET: $15,000-$30,000

If you don’t have much cash to splash and feel comfortable doing some DIY, seek out a fibreglass pool manufacturer that offers DIY kits. “These pre-made pools are made from fibreglass-reinforced plastic and you can choose from different shapes, sizes and colours,” says Veda. “When manufactured properly, they are low maintenance and generally use less chemicals than other in-ground pools.” Before your pool is delivered by semi-trailer and crane (you will need to organise these, or pay extra), you’ll need to dig a hole to accommodate it. Once that is done, other jobs on the to-do list include fitting a filtration system, connecting the plumbing and installing the coping or decking (you could use a friend or local builder to help with all, or part, of the installation). Another great budget option is a pre-cast concrete plunge pool. “There are lots of prefabricated concrete options coming onto the market that significantly reduce installation costs and time by enabling you to ‘select, install and swim’,” says Veda. These pools are compact (think 4.6m x 2.5m), so they’re perfect for small backyards. >

TIP: To get the look of Bluestone minus the cost, acid-etched concrete was used around this pool in Melbourne, designed by Boston Design Home And Landscapes.

MID-RANGE: $30,000-$40,000 As your budget increases, so do your options. “For $30,000-$40,000, you’re looking at a pool with 400mm wide stone tile coping in fibreglass or sprayed concrete, surrounded by brick paving on a sand or cement base, or tiles on a concrete slab,” says Will Marcus of design firm Argo. “For this price, you usually get some automatic equipment like a pump, filter and an automatic chlorinator with manual pool-cleaning equipment.” Whichever you choose, both fibreglass and concrete come with pros and cons: fibreglass costs about 20 per cent less to install, and the ongoing costs are lower due to less maintenance, chemicals and energy consumption, but since they’re pre-made, they’re limited in terms of design and colour. At the other end of the spectrum, concrete pools (right) offer infinite possibilities in size, shape, depth and location, however, these bespoke options come at a price. “Unlike fibreglass, you can add custom additions such as a ‘pebblecrete’ interior with a waterline mosaic tile band, LED underwater lights, and underwater ledges and steps to concrete pools,” says Will.

TIP: Plunge pools and long, thin lap pools such as this are a popular option for narrow backyards – they’re also a clever choice for unused side passages, provided there is access for installation.

TIP: A frameless glass fence is the ideal barely-there option – make sure to check the exact measurements you need to comply with the regulations in your state.

LUXURY: $50,000-$60,000 Top of the range equals all the tricks and features. “For around $60,000 you’ll get a sprayed concrete pool with a ceramic or stone tile coping, LED underwater lights, two or three underwater ledges or steps, and a granolithic-style interior, which usually includes glass beads with a waterline mosaic tile or glass tile band,” says Will. Some packages may also include pool heating and a thermal blanket, and you’ll usually get fully automatic equipment, too, at this price. If you want a connected spa (pictured), factor in another $20,000, plus about $5000 for solar heating or $8000 for an electric heat pump. As well as more design options, a bigger budget further means access to smart technology that will make your pool easier to look after, cheaper to run and healthier to swim in. “Today’s automation means you can create self-sufficient swimming pools that effectively monitor, clean, chlorinate and maintain themselves, and you can control these smart systems from anywhere in the world via the internet,” says pool industry consultant Vera Dante. >

TIP: Glass mosaic tiles from Bisazza are a dazzling match for the Bamstone Bluestone pavers around this LSA Architects-designed pool, which comes complete with a 1.8m square spa for an added taste of luxury.

OUTDOORS

Routine pool care not only safeguards swimmers, it also helps to reduce water use – an essential consideration. “Pool maintenance usually includes testing and balancing the water, scooping debris out of the pool, emptying the skimmer basket, brushing the walls, vacuuming the floor, cleaning the filter and cleaning the salt cell,” says executive officer Rick Graham of Swimart. Rick recommends making use of Waterco Glass Pearls, a new generation of filter media that needs less water for backwashing, which

is crucial during water restrictions. Evaporation is one of the biggest contributors to dropping water levels in swimming pools, so invest in a cover – either a physical one (try Clark Rubber to cater for a custom size or shape) or a chemical product such as AquaSaver that you simply add to water. Lowering the temperature of the water will also reduce evaporation, while keeping the pool’s water level down just a little will put a stop to water loss caused by splashing.

Remove haloumi and set aside, leaving residual oil in pan. 4. Add onion and garlic to same hot pan. Cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes, or until soft. Add half the cauliflower. Cook, stirring, for about 4-5 minutes, or until light golden and tender. Transfer to a large bowl. 5. Add rest of oil to same hot pan. Add remaining cauliflower. Cook, stirring, for 4 minutes, then add spinach leaves. Cook, stirring, until tender and spinach has wilted. Transfer to same bowl. Add almonds, haloumi and zest. Stir until combined. Season to taste. 6. Stir in reserved sliced herbs and the feta and spoon into serving bowl. Garnish with some of the drained fennel salad. Serve with lemon wedges and remaining fennel salad on the side. 1. Preheat oven to 180C. Cut capsicums in half lengthways. Remove membranes and seeds. Place the capsicums and tomatoes in a large oiled roasting pan. Spray with oil. Roast for about 20-25 minutes, or until softened but not collapsed. 2. Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, garlic and oregano. Cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes, or until soft. Add stock. Bring to the boil. Stir in orzo or risoni. Gently boil for about 12 minutes, or until tender and almost all the stock has been absorbed. Remove pan from heat. Cover and stand for 5 minutes. 3. Transfer orzo to a large heatproof bowl and allow to cool for 20 minutes. Add remaining oil and the juice and stir to separate orzo. Stir in roasted tomatoes, olive wedges, parsley, bocconcini and half the Romano or parmesan. Season to taste. Spoon back into capsicums. Sprinkle with remaining Romano or parmesan. Roast for about 20 minutes, or until Romano has melted. LEMON, POPPYSEED & HONEY CHEESECAKE Serves 12 1 cup (100g) walnuts Filling ½ cup (55g) pistachios, 500g cream cheese, chopped, extra chopped to garnish at room temperature 2 tbsp caster sugar ½ cup caster sugar 1½ tsp cinnamon ¼ cup honey, extra to drizzle ½ cup (50g) ground almonds 200g tub Greek yoghurt 80g unsalted butter, melted 3 eggs, at room temperature ¼ cup lemon juice 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest 2 tsp poppy seeds 3 figs, halved lengthways

LEMON, POPPYSEED & HONEY CHEESECAKE

1. Preheat oven to 180C. Invert the base of a 23cm springform pan. Grease, then line the base and side of pan with baking paper. Put walnuts, pistachios, sugar and cinnamon in the bowl of a food processor. Process until coarse crumbs form. Add ground almonds. Pulse until combined. 2. Add butter and process until combined. Press into the base of prepared pan. Use a flat-based glass to press down firmly. Put pan on an oven tray and bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly golden. Allow to cool slightly. 3. To make the filling, reduce oven to 150C. Put half of the cream cheese in the clean bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. Gradually add remaining cream cheese through the food chute, while processing, until smooth. 4. Add sugar, honey, yoghurt, eggs, juice and zest, and process until smooth. Scrape down sides with a spatula halfway and process until lump-free. Add poppy seeds and pulse until smooth. Pour over base. 5. Bake for 45 minutes or until just set in the middle, avoid opening the oven door during cooking. Allow to cool in oven with door ajar for 30 minutes. Refrigerate in pan, covered, overnight. 6. To serve, remove from pan and transfer to a serving plate. Arrange figs on top. Drizzle with honey. Sprinkle with pistachios. Cut into wedges to serve.

tip

You may experience slight cracking upon cooling. This is partly due to the low-fat content in the yoghurt and overcooking. It is important to not continue to bake after 45 minutes if cheesecake is set in the centre with a slight wobble. It will continue to cook on cooling with door ajar. Cracking does not affect taste.

SIMPLE & STYLISH A MELBOURNE KITCHEN GOES FROM CRAMMED TO CLEVER WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF SMART STORAGE AND A FAB NEW FLOOR PLAN Words KYLIE JACKES Photography MARTINA GEMMOLA

BENCH BENEFITS The old peninsular island allowed for only single entry to the kitchen, causing a constant bottleneck. The solution? A central island topped in Silestone Desert Silver, Eternal Serena Polished, with lots of space on either side for easy access. An overhang defined by a matt black steel frame enhances its appeal, offering space for Globe West bar stools. “It seats a minimum three, yet can accommodate five, with space for additional stools, says interior designer Kia Howat of GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens. On the back workbench a matt black Abey pull-out mixer from e&s and Ilve Flushline gas cooktop echo the metal accent in the island bench. >

SUPER STORAGE One of the issues with the original kitchen was its open shelving and open walk-in pantry, which meant food and appliances were on show and tended to look messy, recalls homeowner Megan. To address this, everything has now been concealed behind doors. Two integrated Miele ‘Side By Side’ fridges disappear behind VJ panels that span a whole wall. Also invisible? The scullery door and an appliance cabinet and bar area hidden behind pocket doors. “The design of each provides space for different needs, with pull-out drawers for appliances, shelves for special occasion crockery, a charging station and space for our ironing board to roll away,” explains Megan. To add a little warmth to the scheme, timber veneer in Navurban Byron Blackbutt sourced from New Age Veneers was chosen.

A

fter a decade spent living in their Melbourne home, Megan and Dean decided it was time to take on a major renovation and update their dated bayside abode so that it could better accommodate their needs. With three teenagers to cater for, overhauling the kitchen was top of their wish list. “The existing space lacked storage, preparation zones and general flow, so the priority was to transform it into a family hub geared around open-plan living and easy entertaining,” explains interior designer Kia Howat of GIA Bathrooms & Kitchens, who was brought on board to deliver the project’s brief. Merging good looks with functionality, the kitchen zone now cleverly conceals appliances and extra prep areas, allowing beautiful joinery and striking tiles to form the backdrop to casual family dining.

TOP SHELF VJ groove cabinetry in Dulux Lexicon Quarter stretches up to the ceiling, while an open blackbutt timber shelf adds interest – and enhances the kitchen’s casual feel.

Original room: A dated industrial-style kitchen featuring a peninsular island and open shelves that looked cluttered. Time frame: Six months: three months of design and a three-month build. Why the makeover? “The kitchen bench really created a bottleneck and we wanted to remedy that,” says Megan, who also found the space to be cramped, lacking in storage and not user-friendly for their family of five. The works: The original kitchen was gutted, with only the cooktop and the oven salvaged for the revamped – and enlarged – space, which now features custom joinery and Silestone benchtops. Major changes: A study area that formed part of the original kitchen was reclaimed within the new-look design to create a larger footprint, accommodating a concealed storage wall and integrated fridges. Lessons learned: “The trick to renovating is to be able to listen to your heart and take the advice of your designer, and combine their expert ideas with your own sense of style,” says Megan.

Forming the backdrop to the kitchen, the tiles continue into the scullery, where the same palette of finishes creates a seamless feel.

E

nlisted to reinvent a living area as a media room with a Hamptons aesthetic, interior designer Leilani Ryder of Mayflower Interiors, opted for a serene palette that pairs with navy and incorporates soft touches of pink – a personal favourite of clients Martin and Helen. “We layered iconic prints throughout the fabric selections with hand-detailed white furniture pieces for a timeless look,” says Leilani. To keep the light, bright feel, the owners banned any black or brown, but for contrast, Leilani commissioned a bespoke linen ottoman in a rich indigo, which grounds the space. Decoration was kept simple with a large tray, a cluster of vases and stacked home-decor books. The result: classic American style that’s fresh and inviting.

Original room: A formal living-and-dining room that was largely unused. Time frame: Four months. Why the makeover? The owners wanted a media room that could be utilised regularly, says Leilani. “A relaxed, elegant and kid-free retreat for the parents was the brief.” The works: There were no major structural changes to the room, but the original colour palette was reworked to allow a lighter, brighter space. Curtains custom-made by Mayflower House in ‘Hometown’ fabric from Zepel Fabrics with matching sheers added privacy. Lessons learned: Owner Martin says he has learnt a lot about dealing with interior designers since working with Leilani, whom he’d known for years. That familiarity allowed for a frank and fruitful client-designer partnership. “Sometimes when other people come in, you feel like they’ve got an agenda and they go with that,” says Martin. “Whereas we can say to her, quite frankly, ‘Don’t like that’, ‘Really like that’ and then she can just work the idea accordingly.”

BRILLIANT BLUES Sitting behind the sofa, the skirted table (left), dressed in a stunning chinoiserie fabric called ‘Huntington Gardens’ from Schumacher, is the room’s “hero piece”, says interior designer Leilani. BATHED IN LIGHT A DARK AND MOULDY BATHROOM WAS GUTTED AND REIMAGINED AS A LUXURIOUSLY DECADENT ENSUITE Words KYLIE JACKES Photography NATALIE HUNFALVAY

MARBLE LOVE Natural marble was on homeowner Ana’s wish list, with beautiful large format honed Carrara Bianco 610mm x 305mm tiles from Classic Tiles chosen for the shower area and similar honed Carrara marble from Mediterranean Marble selected for the vanity top and splashback. “Ben was concerned about the maintenance, but we had it all sealed and it’s absolutely fine,” says Ana.

BEFORE

W

hen Ana and Ben bought their dated 1980s home in the NSW Southern Highlands, they knew years of renovating would ensue. “We could see potential, but it needed a complete revamp,” explains Ana. Staging the project over five years, the final room to tackle was the ensuite, which, she says, was just too awful to even use. With visions of a chic retreat, interior designer Sally Wilkins created the space the couple longed for. Serene and fresh with giant slabs of marble, abundant natural light, storage, twin sinks and a cast-stone bath tub, Ana reflects that good things come to those who wait. “We’ve gone from having an ensuite we couldn’t bear to go in, to a luxurious space which is a joy to use every day,” she says. Original room: A 1980s mouldy, leaky bathroom in a complete state of disrepair. Time frame: Three months from design to completion. Why the makeover? “The space was just awful,” says Ana. “The cabinets were all water damaged, the pipes leaked, the ceiling was black with mould, we just couldn’t use it.” The works: Everything was removed from the existing space to make way for new finishes, lighting and bespoke cabinetry. An existing window was also closed up and a new skylight installed to enhance natural light. Major changes: The space is now light, bright and functional with the addition of a double vanity, abundant storage and the luxury of under-floor heating. The toilet is now semi-concealed and a generous freestanding bath was added. Lessons learned: “Don’t be afraid to get rid of a window,” says Ana. “Removing it meant we could have the layout we wanted and the new skylight means the room gets more natural light than ever.”

LIGHT EFFECT While it may seem counter-intuitive to remove a bathroom window, which provides natural light and ventilation, here it made sense to take out a window overlooking an outdoor dining area. The installation of an electric Velux skylight has been a “game changer”, says Ana.

COASTAL DINER A DATED KITCHEN AND DINING SPACE IS TRANSFORMED INTO A BELOVED HAMPTONS HAVEN WITH A FRESH TWIST Words KAYLA WRATTEN Photography HELEN WARD Styling ALIX HELPS

CONCRETE CRUSH The matt finish of the Caesarstone island bench in Airy Concrete brings subtle star quality to this new kitchen, and is paired with ‘Classique’ bar stools in Navy and White from Lincoln Brooks. The benchtop is illuminated by an ‘Emery’ chandelier in Imperial Silver from Quoizel, which brings to life the elegant Hamptons style.

arah and Colin knew it was time for a complete overhaul of their Sydney home when things started falling apart. The leaking skylight, broken oven and collapsing cupboard in an out-of-fashion kitchen were a call to action for the couple, originally from New Zealand, and their three grown children. “We even thought about knocking it down and rebuilding, or selling the house and buying elsewhere,” says Sarah. “But we wanted to keep living in this area – it’s quite family orientated.” So instead, they opted to trust in the exquisite vision of interior decorator Alix Helps to bring their eating and cooking area back to life. The remarkable result is an open-plan social space, perfect for relaxed entertaining. Original room: A closed-in kitchen and a small dining area. Time frame: Three months as part of a larger renovation. Why the makeover? “We didn’t do any maintenance and it got to a point that we had to do something,” says Sarah. “The children were getting embarrassed to bring their friends around!” The works: The dining area was completely reconfigured and turned 90 degrees to create a connected kitchen and dining zone, while the laundry was repurposed to include a functional butler’s pantry. Kitchen cabinetry was painted in a clean Dulux colour palette of Vivid White and Western Myall to modernise the room. Major changes: To steal space from the double garage, which the previous owners had used as a music studio, an existing wall was demolished and rebuilt. On top of that, Tongue n Groove timber ‘Piccolo’ flooring in Oslo was laid through the entire house. Lessons learned: “I told Alix I really wanted a white kitchen, but she said having the island bench a darker colour would be a better choice,” admits Sarah, who relied on her interior decorator whole-heartedly.

An original painting (‘Nature Trail – New Chums’ by New Zealand artist Tony Ogle) that Sarah already owned has been reimagined in a bold frame to bring a twist of coastal blue to the Hamptons-inspired room.

OUT OF SIGHT The combined butler’s pantry and laundry (right) is a chic hidey-hole that can be sealed with the swoosh of a door. It acts as an extension of the kitchen with open shelving for storage, and is the perfect compact laundry for the busy Sydney family. The appliances are stacked to save on space, and the Franke ‘Bolero’ stainless steel sink has been added for easy soaking of linens.

NEW RETRO CLEVER UPDATES HAVE BREATHED NEW LIFE INTO THE LIVING ZONE OF THIS MID CENTURY-STYLE HOME Words KAREN SPRESSER Photography BRONTE GODDENSMITH

RELAXED COMFORT Once dominated by an old gas fireplace, the living room in this beachside abode is now light, bright and welcoming. The ‘Crescent’ corner sofa in Storm from Focus On Furniture adds plenty of comfortable seating and makes the best use of the available space. Textured fabrics, and the muted tones of an ‘Alacati’ rug from Freedom, add both warmth and softness to the room. The ‘Pretzel’ coffee table from Naturally Cane is a subtle nod to the raw beauty of the home’s surroundings.

L

iz had long been an admirer of this 1960s weatherboard house just outside Newcastle, NSW, when it came on the market two years ago. Wasting no time, she and husband Sean, a builder, seized the opportunity and bought it. “I’d drive past it on my way to work each day and I’d think, ‘I like the look of that place,’” says Liz. “I really liked the lines of the house, the ’60s style of the property.” It also helped that the home was in an attractive location, offering filtered views of the nearby lake and surrounding bushland. However, it had been rented out for years and required an update. “There was a lot of maintenance that needed doing,” says Liz. “We could see so much potential.” The couple, with the help of interior designer Juelene Douglas of Inside 78, swiftly got to work, transforming the dated dwelling into a stylish holiday home (and holiday rental) where they could relax and unwind.

Original room: The living room, dining room and sunroom within a 1960s split-level weatherboard house. Time frame: It took just under six months to renovate the entire home. Why the makeover? The rooms needed updating and lacked a cohesive flow. “The makeover has given it a new burst of life,” explains Liz. The works: An old gas fireplace in the living room was removed and the original pine floors were refinished. New light fittings were added, and walls and ceilings were all repainted. Major changes: A wall in the living room was opened up to allow for more light and views in the space, and to create visual flow from the entryway to the living room and sunroom. All windows were replaced and French doors were added to the sunroom for easy outdoor access. Lessons learned: “Juelene made such a difference… it helped the whole process go smoothly,” says Liz. “Having a designer is certainly worth it.”

risbane couple Yvette and Ben were overjoyed when they discovered they were expecting a baby girl. “Being our first child, I really wanted to go to town and create a beautiful room which was functional when she was a baby and could evolve to suit her needs as she got older,” explains Yvette of the charming space created for Lucinda, who is now nine months old. In the midst of renovating other areas of their home with interior designer Bronwyn Labagnara of Hannah & Co Design, Bronwyn’s expertise was enlisted to convert Ben’s junk room into a timeless girl’s bedroom in shades of blush pink. The style took shape around a Stokke Sleepi Cot the couple inherited from a friend and their desire to also have a double bed in the space. “We knew in the first few years we’d be spending plenty of time in the room and sleep in there a lot,” says Yvette. “And it works perfectly.” Original room: A large junk/storeroom in a classic 1960s Griffin and Knowlman house. “I think it may have originally been two small bedrooms, which were combined to make one large room by previous owners,” says Yvette of the sizeable space. Time frame: The deadline was set a few weeks before Lucinda’s due date in May 2019 and the project was completed in four months. Why the makeover? The couple were expecting their first child and wanted to create a nursery that also doubled as a bedroom where they could sleep whenever they needed to. The works: Walls were repainted, the floor was recarpeted, window dressings were added and new furniture was installed. Major changes: “The room went from being an underutilised dumping ground, where the door was almost permanently shut, to an incredibly functional nursery/bedroom we all use daily,” says Yvette. Lessons learned: “It’s important to choose practical pieces for a nursery and I feel we got it right,” explains Yvette. “We ended up with a lovely mix of pieces that are useful and decorative.”

ig on functionality and flexibility, this former humble garage has been reborn as three spaces in one: a pool cabana, living area and guest house. Indeed, owner Lara Beesley (founder of online indoor plant service Captain Monstera) says the poolside room has become an integral part of life since it was completed last year, adding extra space where the children can play, and suiting the family’s love of hosting friends and family. “We do a lot of entertaining because of this little cabana,” says Lara. “All the bi-fold windows in the servery open out, making the bar section a great place to perch, and there’s a view of the TV.” Lara and her husband, Darren, had first knocked down and rebuilt the original house on the site two years earlier, but left the old garage until they were ready to tackle the next stage. Nimmo Nielsen Collective designed the original layout, and Sally Paterson from Heliconia Interiors & Design later updated the design and completed the project. “This small space needed to achieve quite a few roles!” says Sally. “Its success came down to careful spatial planning but also a strategic use of scale in fixtures and furnishings.” Original room: A neglected garage Time frame: Six months. Why the makeover? After the original house had been demolished and rebuilt in a contemporary style, it was time to transform the old garage. The works: The space was completely gutted and the zone was then reconfigured to include a kitchenette and bathroom. Major changes: Just about everything was changed, including the wall linings, the flooring and the bathroom fittings. Lessons learned: Lara didn’t use Sally when they did the main house and she says in retrospect it would have made things easier. “Working with Sally was a godsend,” says Lara. “The detail she covers off was a huge benefit.”

ose knew her family home needed an update, but while she had a strong inkling about what she liked, she didn’t know where to start. Yet after five years in the 1950s-era home, Rose and her husband Pat – parents to Georgia, nine, and Thomas, six – weren’t ready to embark on a full renovation, so decided to update a few areas in the meantime, starting with their bedroom. Enter Instagram: Rose was following interior stylist Catherine Heraghty of The Stables and had become a fan of her trademark muted colour schemes and timeless aesthetic, so she reached out. “It was just so nice to have somebody who knew what I wanted and just could make it all come together so easily,” she says. Working with a limited budget, Catherine redesigned the room, keeping only the relatively new carpet. The end result is a grown-up retreat Rose loves. “I actually find myself spending more time in there, just relaxing or making phone calls,” she says. “Or if I just want to escape the kids!”

Original room: The existing main bedroom was outdated and in need of a refresh. “We pretty much used it to sleep and get dressed and that was it, and we never really spent time in our room otherwise,” says Rose. Time frame: Four months. Why the makeover? With only one living space in the home, the idea was to create a parents’ retreat in the main bedroom. Major changes: Almost everything was replaced and updated, starting with the bed, with Rose and Pat upsizing from a queen size to a king. Lessons learned: For Rose, who’s never worked with an interior stylist before, her only regret is that she didn’t enlist Catherine earlier. “I can be quite indecisive, so having Catherine and her expertise on board just made the whole process so nice and so less stressful, because I had confidence in her. She was so accommodating and really flexible.”

nspired by the opulence of the hotel interiors discovered during their frequent travels to China and Japan, Gold Coast couple Daniel and Monica had intentions for a modern, functional master ensuite that offered all the style of hotel living. “Why not have a nice bathroom at home we can enjoy everyday?” asks Daniel. The happy homeowners had recently finished a renovation to the rest of their home with the help of interior designer Darren James of Darren James Interiors, and finally it was their ensuite’s time to shine. Modern luxury, a feeling of zen and easy cleaning were all on the wish list, just beneath optimum storage. “It’s now a perfect bathroom and we’re extremely happy,” says Daniel of the final result.

Original room: An old and underwhelming twin ensuite. Time frame: Five months. Why the makeover? The old bathroom was not only dated, but lacking in aesthetic appeal, functionality, space and storage. “In general, the room was tired and could handle improved layout changes and the use of the latest materials and technology,” explains interior designer Darren. The works: A unused, built-in corner spa bath was removed, and the shower and vanity were replaced. Surfaces, lighting and the layout were all given a refresh too. Major changes: The construction of the new feature platform, floor heating and the new layout were the biggest improvements. Lessons learned: “Leaving it to the professionals and trusting the experienced team at Darren James Interiors to implement the bathroom design,” says Daniel. The result is a remarkable master ensuite full of clever design ideas and practical components.

FLAWLESS FINISH A seamless flow of wall and floor tiles (Urbanature from Metro Tiles) in the walk-in shower looks impeccably smooth and is complemented by modern fixture choices from Brodware, including the ‘City Plus’ rail shower and a flush-mount ceiling shower in Brushed Nickel to match the vanity. A shower niche is another clever design option for storage.

ith a penchant for the beachy East Coast American aesthetic and a building design qualification in progress, Brisbane homeowner Clare and husband Clinton decided the timing was right to tackle the design and construction of a pool house that they, and their two children, Charli, four, and Oliver, six, could enjoy during hot summers. “The challenge was to keep it simple to fit within budget, but still achieve a high-end look,” says Clare, whose vision was to create a home reminiscent of a New Yorker’s island holiday house. “We wanted it to feel like a retreat from the chaos of everyday life, where the calming blues and the texture of white-drenched walls and rafters whisked you away into a state of relaxation.”

Original room: An unused void between the existing pool deck and the property’s rear fence. Time frame: Four weeks from start to finish. Why the makeover? Having two active children and a love for entertaining, the couple felt creating a space for both was a necessity. The works: “A new structure was built ensuring the floor level flowed seamlessly onto the existing deck,” explains Clare. Colorbond roofing with James Hardie Linea cladding was used on the exterior, while the interior walls were sheeted from floor to ceiling with MDF wall panelling. The room was finished with Oyster Grey travertine tiles on the floor. Major changes: Once constructed, external and internal lighting options were fitted for night-time entertaining, and beachy white tones were applied inside and out to create a coastal vibe. Lessons learned: “We did the painting ourselves and it took many more coats than expected,” recalls Clare. “Next time we would choose a white paint with a blocker, to save on coats and lots of time.”

Oyster Grey travertine tiles cover the floor, while ‘Miami’ bar stools from Vorsen allow for relaxed entertaining after long dips in the pool. A Koralky 6 Light Tier Chandelier from Beacon Lighting hangs in the centre, creating subtle lighting when the sun goes down.

UNSUNG ICONS:

THE KREEPY KRAULY COMEDIAN DAVID SMIEDT TAKES AN IRREVERENT, BUT APPRECIATIVE, LOOK AT THE CLASSIC THINGS THAT DEFINE YOU-BEAUT AUSSIE LIFE Illustration MATT COSGROVE

B

ack in 2002, a bunch of graduates from the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab launched a new product called the Roomba. It was an ingenious blend of a robot and vacuum cleaner. Using cleverly placed sensors and wheels, this device could traverse your floor space devouring dirt like a newly ousted Love Island contestant on a paparazzi opportunity. And when it came close to a wall, it merely turned around and trundled off in a new direction. Despite the marketing hype of so many late-night TV commercials, many Aussies were nonplussed. We’d seen a version of this device before. Only ours worked underwater. Going by the mildly terrifying name of the Kreepy Krauly, it first hit the market in 1974 in South Africa and went on to become so ubiquitous that all such devices became generically known as “creepy crawlies”. Like all tissues are sometimes referred to as Kleenex. Speaking of being damp when used, the Kreepy Krauly, like so many South African émigrés, ended up in Western Australia, where a bloke called Terry Jackson knew a good thing when he saw one. At that stage, Tezza was the MD of a company manufacturing above-ground pools, but he had no need to test the water on this particular accessory. He leapt in by refining the first-gen design of the immaculately named inventor Ferdinand Chauvier. Upping the original’s reliability, the Australian-designed KK was launched in 1976 and soon spread to pools from Bungendore to Bundaberg. Its genius was that is was powered by the pool’s filter and effectively supercharged said suction. Throw in a jumble of flexible plastic tubes, a voracious central unit that feasted on leaf litter and algae with the greed of a distant relative at a wedding open bar and you had a piece of the future right there in your kidney-shape. When they first arrived in Australian yards, the KK was almost as much of a status symbol as the pools in which they operated. Many an Australian dad – whose domestic remit was pool care and the barbecue because his wife did everything bloody else – could be caught staring appreciatively, beer in hand and wonder in his bloodshot eyes, at this ’70s technology as it tirelessly went about its sparkling business. Why bloodshot? Because the only thing left to do once the KK had completed its rounds was to over-chlorinate the water in the pool to the point where every swimmer emerged squinting as if they were staring into an eclipse.

The marketing teams behind the KK didn’t miss a trick when shilling their wares to a blokey demographic for whom there was no such thing as too many gadgets. Gone was the dainty business of a net on a pole for scooping up errant foliage. In its wake were models that went by aggressive names – and we aren’t making a single one of these up – such as the Dominator, the Prowler and the Tiger Shark. Despite every piece of logic and visual confirmation to the contrary, once the idea was in your young head, it seemed entirely possible that there was one of these ferocious carnivores in your pool. Somehow, it had made its way from the vast Pacific Ocean to your Frankston freeform, just waiting to chomp into an unsuspecting limb. What has all this to do with KK? Ask us that after one of its octopus-like plastic tendrils brushed against your ankle. Or worse still, when the goo-slicked underside of the scalloped rubber sucker made contact with flesh, prompting the kind of involuntary shriek most often associated with hordes of lovestruck teens at a Harry Styles concert – which in turn transformed into hilarious Christmas stories about that time you were attacked by the pool equipment. On a less mortifying note, when the olds weren’t looking, the KK could function as quite the plaything. The tubes could be twisted into an underwater dive course or configured into a diving circle where points were awarded for a clean entry with no plastic contact. No pool noodle? No problem. Simply wrap a KK coil around your waist and sink like the approval rating of a politician whose idea of uni good times was going to a party in black face.

“MANY AN AUSTRALIAN COULD BE CAUGHT STARING APPRECIATIVELY, BEER IN ” HAND, AT THIS ’70S Unlike many of the items celebrated, eulogised and lionised in this column, the KK and its slithery descendants remain with us. Out back, stalking the blue depths for anything that nature cares to throw at it. And if you listen carefully, you can still hear its “tuka-tuka-tuka-tuka-tuka” heartbeat whose knocking doggerel became as much a part of the summer soundtrack as cicadas, mozzies and Bill Lawry exclaiming, “He’s got him – yes”.
