HOW TO

style the look 1

Feature Ella Rhys-Jones

Playing with different tones of green is key to giving this look dimension. A splash of yellow or lime will brighten up a predominantly dark palette. Introducing one or two houseplants to your bedroom will bring an element of calm to the room while complementing leaf-printed fabrics. If you’re notoriously bad at looking after real plants, why not pick up a faux one?

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Katie Lewis. I live here with my husband Ben, our daughters, Molly, 15, and Ellie, 5, and Meeks the cat.

‘It’s all about creating a calm, inviting atmosphere with a palette of tonal greens, greys and blues, warm natural wood, and lots of foliage’

Where I live Home is a four-bedroom detached house in Lincoln, built in 2008. We moved here in 2010.

What I wanted to change

Feature Annabelle Grundy Photos Colin Poole

Inside it was bland with a cramped, gloomy kitchen and an oldfashioned arch into a dining area. The bathroom was dated and the upstairs split into small bedsit-type rooms.

How I made it my own We extended to create a family-friendly layout with an open-plan kitchen-diner. I’ve introduced tranquil greens and greys with bright colourful pops, leafy plants and some unique, quirky touches.

My favourite part All of it, except the bathroom, which I can’t wait to rip out!

Dining area Building the extension has turned a dark kitchen and an uninviting separate dining room into a bright, multipurpose, sociable space. ‘We were lucky to find an excellent local builder, K2 Developments, and the whole project was straightforward,’ says Katie. ‘It was a bit cold at times, as it was March, but we stayed in the house. Ben’s parents, who live nearby, were very kind and often fed us as we had nowhere to cook! The extension is only just over a metre wide but that extra space made a huge impact. The glass doors let the natural light flood in and draw attention to the greenery outdoors. We’ve got a family-sized dining table and comfy seating for relaxing with a drink, so it’s a great entertaining space, too.’

Now our home With calming colours and creative touches, Katie Lewis has 14 homestylemag.co.uk

works for us all transformed a bland and dated interior into a stylish and uplifting family home February 2020 15

‘I try to avoid having clutter on the worktops,’ says Katie. ‘I painted this little kitchen shelf, which I’ve had for ages. It’s a useful spot for tea and coffee, and a few interesting bits and pieces’

‘I’ve experimented with different looks but the house definitely works now and fits how we live as a family’

My story... Ben and I had been looking for a three-bedroom family house, so when we found an affordable, four-bedroom detached property we were delighted. It had been repossessed, which was why it was such a great deal, and we decided it was worth compromising a little on the location to get that extra space. Since moving in, we’ve gradually transformed the inside of the house, taking down all the partition walls and revitalising the lacklustre rooms. I work in interior design (@magariinteriordesign) and believe your surroundings can have a big effect on mood and general wellbeing. I’ve experimented with different looks, but the house definitely works as it is now and fits how we live as a family. Extending the kitchen has made the biggest difference. It was originally two separate spaces, so we knocked through and added a small extension that has boosted the light and changed the feel and flow of the house. I’ve redecorated every room at least once over time. I pick up style ideas from restaurants, cafés, shops and online. For me, it’s all about creating a calm, inviting atmosphere with a palette of tonal greens, greys and blues, warm natural wood, and lots of foliage to bring the outdoors in. To make sure that we’ve got wellfunctioning spaces, I think about when and how we use each room, and I like to add personality with vintage pieces and anything unusual or eye-catching that gets people talking. I’m always looking out for new bits and pieces, so it never stops evolving. 16 homestylemag.co.uk

Kitchen When the extension was built, Katie took the opportunity to update her kitchen. ‘It had a pale tiled floor, Shaker-style cabinets and a bright yellow feature wall. I was fed up with it as it just felt so cold and harsh,’ she says. The layout was working well so for a cost-effective makeover, Katie replaced the worktops and flooring, and fitted the existing carcasses with new, more contemporary door and drawer fronts from Kitchen Expressions Lincoln. The focal point is a Moroccan-inspired tiled splashback. ‘These are actually floor tiles from Walls and Floors, so they’re very practical and easy to clean,’ says Katie. ‘I’m always up for mixing different styles together and I wanted something eyecatching to break up the wall.’

For continuity, Katie used the same wooden floor in the kitchen, dining zone and hall. ‘It’s a big space so I wanted something warm and comfortable underfoot,’ she says. ‘It’s durable and natural-looking, and if I redecorate, it will go with anything’

Inspiring homes

Style idea A strong highlight colour will maximise impact and pull a scheme together ‘No one lingers too long in a hall, so it’s a space where you can really do something dramatic and exciting,’ says Katie. A dark wood console table, which Katie bought from HomeSense, stands out against a leafy-design wallpaper, a budget buy from B&Q

Cinema zone

Katie painted the walls in the cinema zone with Valspar’s Woodpigeon. ‘It has a greenish tone so it’s soft and restful even though it’s very dark,’ she says. ‘The chunky wall mirror breaks it up and adds a spot of light’

‘This is part of the hall and it’s another area that has evolved quite a lot. It was meant for formal dining at first, but it didn’t really get used. Ben works long hours and loves to relax with a film or computer games, so this has now become our cinema! There’s a pull-down screen and the projector goes on the coffee table. It’s also another evening space that didn’t need a lot of light, so I chose a very dark grey shade for the walls. It makes quite a dramatic backdrop for our modern, white leather sofa and a few pops of bright orange. We’ve had the sofa for ages. It’s supercomfy and big enough for everyone to watch a film together.’

Katie’s retro-style sideboard was an absolute steal at only £15 from a local charity shop. ‘It was such an incredible find, I just couldn’t pass it up!’

‘Until recently this room was all offwhites and neutrals, and it felt cool and unwelcoming. We’re mostly in here during the evening so this deep grey was definitely the right choice. It made me realise how important it is to think about the purpose of a room when you decorate. It’s so calm and cosy now. The fireplace is not really to my taste, but it’s a big feature so I was very happy when a friend found the painted screen for me at a flea market. It hides the fire and I love the moody tones – it’s something unique. I added wallpaper on the chimney breast and also on the opposite wall, which brings another layer of interest and lifts the dark colour.’

‘Plants are such a boost to wellbeing and I love bringing the outside in,’ says Katie. ‘I made this wall decoration for next-to-nothing, with a spare frame, faux plant panels from IKEA and a few extra leafy bits’

‘I like to add personality to a room with vintage pieces, and anything unusual that gets people talking’

Katie often updates her decor, but the grey DFS sofa and chairs will blend in easily with a new look. The little bear side table was a charity shop find. ‘He’s something fun and different,’ says Katie

Expert advice ‘We originally bought the small velvet sofa for the kitchen, but we needed extra seating in the living room – and it works a lot better here,’ says Katie

Tips on planning an extension

three different companies and compare carefully.

O You should always check, but it’s unlikely you’ll need planning permission or an architect for a simple ground-floor extension like Katie’s. There are rules on dimensions and Building Regulations so do contact your local planning department.

O Draw up a plan as accurately as you can and work through detailed proposals with your builder. Pictures can be helpful. Decide on positions of electrical points, lighting, plumbing and radiators. Give specifications for any fixtures such as appliances, windows and flooring.

O A trustworthy and competent builder is essential. A personal recommendation will give you confidence, as will visits to completed projects to gauge the quality of finish. The Federation of Master Builders (fmb.org.uk) and websites such as ratedpeople.com and checkatrade.com are useful resources. Get quotations from

O Get a detailed written estimate and check everything you want is itemised, including any demolition work, skip hire and site clearance. Agree costs upfront and confirm the start date and completion schedule. Keep a 10% reserve fund for unforeseen costs and hold off paying the final total until you’re completely satisfied. Style idea A ladder desk makes a useful workstation without taking up too much floor space

Home office ‘This little room off the hall has to work hard as it’s my office and also Ellie’s playroom. It’s not that large so I needed some well-designed furniture to get the most from the space. I’m very happy with my fabulous desk, which I found at Something Different, a brilliant local shop that has all sorts of vintage stuff and interesting bits and pieces. I’ve teamed it with a lovely old chair that I’ve re-covered, which belonged to Ben’s grandmother. I really like the wall colour, which is an unusual shade of dusky pink called Pheasant Tail from Colourtrend. It’s soft, warm and interesting, but it’s not a distraction when I’m working.’

20 homestylemag.co.uk

Katie experimented with a vintage-look wallpaper on the office ceiling to add interest. ‘It has the effect of lowering the height of the room so it feels cosy,’ she says. ‘My little desk was a great find as it fits the corner perfectly and I like the chunky industrial vibe’

l, but the interest is mostly ‘The bedroom is quite colourfu usive when you want to behind the bed, so it’s not intr the pops of coral pink. ‘It’s a sleep,’ says Katie, who loves ause it’s so uplifting’ favourite colour of mine bec

Main bedroom ‘The bedroom was ready for a new look. We’d had pale walls and pretty patterned wallpaper behind the bed for a while. I love painted panelling and Ben made ours himself from MDF. He did an am azing job as it looks perfect and it has com pletely changed the look of the room. We painted it dark grey to ground everyth ing and to contrast with the soft yellow-gre en on the other walls. There’s a tranquil atm osphere in here now and it’s easy to swi tch off and relax as there’s no television. Space is limited, so our bamboo ladder s are a nifty alternative to bedside tables.’

Tall bamboo ladders stand out against the dark panelling and draw the eye up. They make stylish and unusual bedside storage and the functional, clip-on spotlights are a clever space-saver

What I learned... O Houseplants are the easiest and most versatile accessories there are. They enhance wellbeing and soften any space. They’re also very useful for hiding unsightly things such as fuse boxes or marks on the walls. Faux plants look incredibly realistic and are great for dark corners or high shelves.

Ellie’s bedroom ‘Ellie’s five now, so we let her choose from She colour options when we redecorated. k thin I ch whi , pink s eou picked this gorg sh. gari too not it’s as time e som will last Rather than hanging artwork on the walls I liked the idea of something with s depth and texture. As the bed and carpet are neutral in Ellie’s bedroom, the scheme will grow with her. The bed came from Noa & Nani and the bedside table, from Home Bargains, has a nifty lid and stores books

O Individual touches are what make a house a home. I noticed various names had been scratched onto my old wooden Sunday school chairs over the years. I love that character and history, and anyone who comes to our home can add their name too. It means the chairs are still evolving and they’re unique and so personal to us.

Our home is a threebedroom Victorian semidetached in Bromley, Kent. We moved here in July 2017.

What I wanted to change Fortunately, the house was in a decent condition, but we wanted to paint and remove wallpaper from all of the rooms to put our own stamp on it.

How I made it my own First we had to decide on a colour palette for each room. I’m naturally drawn to greens and blues.

My favourite part I love our dining room, although we don’t spend as much time in it as we would like.

We fell for our Donna Wardell knew she’d found the one, long before she 26 homestylemag.co.uk

Inspiring homes The previous owners had recently installed a Howdens Fairford kitchen with oak worktops, which fortunately are to Donna’s taste. She plans to paint the cabinetry dark green when they carry out the kitchen extension later this year

Kitchen ‘The kitchen is the only room we haven’t really done a lot with, as we like the Shaker-style cabinetry. We’re also saving for an extension to the back and side of the house, which will create space for a downstairs toilet and laundry room. We hope to start it in the spring and be finished by summer. I already have my mood board and we’ve instructed an architect to start the drawings. We’ll be keeping a lot of the Howdens kitchen units, but we’ll remodel the layout and paint them in Farrow & Ball’s Studio Green. I’m also planning to have a pink island!’

The radiator covers are a temporary measure while the couple saves for traditional cast-iron ones. The tan leather wingback armchair is from Made.com

My story... We had only looked at one house prior to making an offer on this one. We’d booked lots of viewings but didn’t get past driving down the street for any of the others! We had pretty much made up our mind that we wanted this one just from the estate agent’s pictures and the feeling we got from driving around the neighbourhood. It was a dark winter’s night when we viewed it so we had no idea what the garden looked like, as we couldn’t see much of it. We made an offer regardless, as we just knew it was the one! Being a corner plot means it benefits from more space and is attached at the rear rather than the side. We’d previously rented a small mid-terrace house so having more space really appealed. Three months later and with no further viewings, we moved in. Tom also got down on one knee and proposed on the doorstep on the day we moved in, which was a huge surprise. As soon as we were in, we booked a tradesman to help decorate the hallway, landing, living room and master bedroom. He stripped all the wallpaper and painted the walls, ceilings, doors and skirting boards. After that, we took a break from home improvement while we saved for and planned our wedding. We got married in Italy just nine months after Tom proposed. Once we’d returned from our wedding and ‘minimoon’ in Italy, we plunged straight back into the decorating. I’d describe our style as traditional and rustic, with a touch of industrial. We like blending elements of contemporary with period. I’ve truly loved making this house our home. 28 homestylemag.co.uk

Living room ‘I prefer softer, calming colours for spaces where we spend more time, so I went for Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White in here. We got our Chesterfield sofas and rug from M&S – they are classic pieces. Wildlife inspires a lot of our décor as I’m naturally drawn to it. It’s always been my dream to go on safari and so for our honeymoon we spent five nights in South Africa, which was the most amazing experience. I took a lot of pictures and had some framed, which we’ve placed throughout the house.’

Expert advice Buying lighting for your home How to choose lighting that’s practical and stylish O Layered light sources, positioned at different levels, creates visual interest. Use lighting to make the most of a room’s size and shape – uplighting makes a space feel larger while floor lights add a vertical element. Think about the size of your fitting as well – for instance, place a larger feature light over a dining table where a smaller option could look disproportionate. The bar trolley from Wayfair is well-stocked with crystal barware. The lamp is from Matalan

30 homestylemag.co.uk

O Think about the tasks you undertake in each room. A kitchen-diner will need brighter

lighting, such as spotlights, for the food preparation zone, while dimmers create an ambience in a dining area. O Carefully consider your bulbs and the look you’re aiming to achieve, such as vintage or retro. Additionally, think about the wattage and how bright you need your space to be, as well as how frequently the light source will be used. O Bulb colour temperature is key; choose a lower temperature, soft-white bulb to create a cosy feel in living areas and higher temperature ones for a brighter effect. Daylight bulbs are a good choice if you are lighting spaces that have little natural light.

Dining room ‘This is my favourite room! We went a bit darker on the walls, with Farrow & Ball’s Pigeon. We get so many compliments about our ceiling light, which we love. It was a fairly recent purchase from Lux Foundry and the beam offers endless opportunities for seasonal touches, by adding foliage or decorations. I searched high and low for bulbs but eventually stumbled across these amber-plated glass ones on Amazon. I already had some vases with the same glass effect and I just knew they would look gorgeous. We added to the rustic feel by putting up some reclaimed scaffold shelves, which we found on eBay, and a ladder rail from Amazon. All of the matching wood in this room adds to its rustic charm.’

Style idea Paint traditional pine furniture for a contemporary update

‘I would describe our style as traditional and rustic, with a touch of industrial’

‘We decided to paint the dining room table to work with the newly painted internal doors. We opted for a dark grey from Valspar using their colour match service for the table legs and black for the chairs.’ The rug is a Wayfair find February 2020 31

Guest room ‘We wanted the guest bedroom to look and feel quite different to all of the other rooms. It wasn’t a place that we would spend much time in, so we went quite bold with the colour scheme. We opted for Stiffkey Blue by Farrow & Ball for the walls and added monochrome accessories and a rug, which was a bargain find from Amazon. We ripped up the carpet and had the floorboards brought back to their original glory – restored floorboards are one of my favourite period features.’

‘We’ve started to make small changes to rooms now we’ve found our style’ 32 homestylemag.co.uk

Inspiring homes A hint of ochre is added with the beanbag from Bean Bag Bazaar

Master bedroom ‘I love wood panelling and, as well as our bedroom, we also added it in the hallway. It has made such a difference and works well with the period of our property. We painted it in Farrow & Ball’s Elephant’s Breath for a classic look. For the bed, we decided to splash out – we got a superking-size one from Loaf. It takes up a lot of space but it’s so dreamy! Our mirrored furniture is from M&S, while we found a pre-loved floor-length mirror on eBay.’

‘We went for a super-king-size Squidgel bed from Loaf and it was worth every penny. ’ Squidgels are no longer available, but the Billow bed is a close match. ’The Morris & Co Pink Rose bedding is from John Lewis & Partners

What I learned... O We bought a lot of furniture before we moved in, as we were mindful of the lead times on things like beds and sofas. In hindsight, I should have waited until we had moved in so we could get a better feel for what would fit in each space. O Being part of the Instagram community has taught me so much and really helped me hone my style. I just wish I’d created an account sooner, before we moved in and started decorating any of our rooms! O I always use Instagram’s Layout app to create mood boards so I can make sure everything will go together before I make a purchase. It’s also a way to win over Tom, so he can visualise how pieces will work in our home. ‘The monkey lamp is from Value Ligh ts. It sits in our master bedroom and makes me smil e every time I see it.’ The mirrored dressing table is from M&S

‘I like to blend modern furniture with vintage pieces for an eclectic feel’ Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Jessy Hassall. I’m a 28-year-old events manager and I live here with my partner, Josh, 28, and our Fox Terrier, Walter. You can find me on Instagram at @jessyno.162

Where I live My home is a twobedroom 1920s semi in Derby. We bought it in June 2017.

Feature and styling Cassie Pryce Photos David Giles F

What I wanted to change The interior was dated and needed a cosmetic overhaul. We had to replace the kitchen and I wanted to expose the floorboards hidden under the old carpets.

How I made it my own I’ve brightened up the décor with a Scandiinspired scheme and introduced a mix of modern and vintage pieces to each room.

My favourite part The kitchen-dining area is a great space for entertaining – it’s so welcoming and sociable.

We stripped it Faced with the challenge of modernising a dated 1920s 38 homestylemag.co.uk

Dining room Walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s Jitney sets the scene for Jessy’s elegant dining room, where neutral tones complement wooden furniture for a sophisticated look. ‘We stripped back the floorboards and painted them white to open up the space, while still retaining the texture and character. Ideally, I would have loved to knock through to the kitchen and adjoining conservatory to create one big open-plan kitchen-diner, but as this isn’t our ‘forever home’, it just didn’t make sense to spend the budget doing such large-scale structural work.’

Style idea Sand down and paint original floorboards for a Pinterest-worthy effect

all back to basics property, Jessy Hassall has refreshed each room from top to bottom February 2020 39

Jessy and Josh stripped, sanded and painted the staircase to give it a modern makeover. ‘It was a labour of love, but worth the effort,’ she says. ‘We used a special floor paint as we needed something tough for this hightraffic area’

My story... Having been house hunting for almost a year, Josh and I wasted no time in making an offer on this two-bed doer-upper. We called the estate agent from the car before driving away from the viewing, as we’d been stung in the past and didn’t want to risk it getting snapped up. Although the inside felt dated we could see the house offered the perfect project for first-time buyers like us – there was enough to get our teeth stuck into, but it didn’t need rewiring or gutting. The first room we started work on was our bedroom as we decided it would be important to have one room that we could use as a calm place of refuge while we tackled the others. Then we ripped up all the carpets to expose the original floorboards, which we sanded down and painted. We saved up each month rather than taking out a loan or borrowing money, so each part of the project has been done at a steady and manageable pace. Josh and I have done most of the work ourselves to keep costs down and, although it has taken time, as we both work five days a week, it’s very satisfying to see a scheme gradually come together, especially when you’ve taken on the whole project yourself. I would describe my style as Scandi with a vintageinspired twist. I made mood boards for each room before we even moved in and I gathered inspiration from home décor shops and through Instagram. 40 homestylemag.co.uk

‘Painting the stairs pink has given our hallway a real focal point’

Hallway ‘Previously, the hallway was painted in drab magnolia, and had red carpet and lace curtains. I wanted this space to feel light and airy when you walk into our house, so we painted the walls in a pale grey and brightened up the woodwork with white eggshell. I chose the bold floor tiles from British Ceramic Tile – the geometric design adds some pattern to the hallway and they’re easy to keep clean when Walter’s padding around with muddy paws! I painted the staircase in Rust-Oleum’s Pink Champagne floor paint, which has transformed it into a fun and stylish feature. A few people thought I was mad when I started, but it brightens up this part of the hallway and works well with the grey and white scheme.’

Inspiring homes A copper-tinted mirror casts a warm glow around the room

Living room ‘I had my heart set on a blush pink scheme for the living room before we’d even moved in! I love blush pink and grey as a colour combination and it’s given the room a warm yet modern look that fits in with the rest of the house. We removed a dated fire from the chimney breast but kept the opening as a characterful feature. The alcove shelving has added handy storage and it’s nice to be able to make the most of the high ceilings. A large floor rug helps to keep the space cosy in winter and I’ve added colour and pattern through cushions and wall art.’

MAKING Make a botanical cushion on page 48

Expert advice How to revamp a kitchen on a budget Freshen things up without breaking the bank

Pink tiles from Claybrook Studio add colour to the new kitchen. ‘I splashed out on these once we had decided on the IKEA kitchen,’ says Jessy

42 homestylemag.co.uk

O If your kitchen needs a makeover but your budget is limited, consider changing the cabinet fronts. This will make a big impact and can give the impression that the whole kitchen is new. Alternatively, just paint your existing cupboards – this works for wood and laminate surfaces. O Don’t drastically change the configuration of your kitchen if you’re fitting a new design but want to avoid extra costs. Talk to a professional kitchen designer to figure out the best way to

make k the h most off your existing layout. O To spruce up your kitchen without breaking the bank, tile a splashback for a pop of colour or pattern. Depending on your budget, you could keep this to the area behind your sink or hob, or extend it along the walls to fill the gap between your worktop and wall units. O Changing your kitchen flooring can make a big impact and can be done cheaply with the right materials. Vinyl is an affordable option and comes in a wide range of patterns or more natural finishes. O Turn to page 90 for more transformative ideas for your kitchen.

Kitchen ‘Blocking up a side window and door leading into the conservatory meant we were able to make use of both walls in the kitchen, which doubled the storage space. As it’s not the largest of rooms, we were fairly limited on layout options and knew a simple galley-style configuration would work best. Josh installed the IKEA kitchen himself to save money and he’s done a fantastic job. The plywood cabinet fronts give the space a Scandi feel and keeping the rest of the units white makes the room feel lighter. Open-shelving along one wall, made by Josh using oak planks, provides additional storage for pretty kitchenware and means the space doesn’t feel enclosed by another run of wall units.’

‘I’ve echoed green accents through the bedding, artwork and house plants to tie the room together’

Bedroom ‘Decorating the master bedroom first meant we had a sanctuary to escape to while the rest of the renovations were underway. I’ve chosen quite a bohemian scheme for this space and the green accents and white-washed floors make it feel fresh and airy. I bought quite a lot of the furniture for this room from charity shops and I love the mismatch of different styles. The original period features of the property can be seen throughout, such as the coving and chimney breast in the bedroom, which I was keen to preserve. I wanted to embrace these quirks of the house as it makes it more interesting than just a series of plain boxy rooms.’

44 homestylemag.co.uk

The vintage dressing table, which Jessy bought at a local antiques shop, fits in perfectly with the rest of the furniture in her bohemianinspired bedroom. She also salvaged the wooden stool and reupholstered it in a mustard-yellow velvet fabric to match the pillows on the bed

Inspiring homes

Bathroom ‘The bathroom is one of the few rooms in the house that hasn’t been renovated as we decided it didn’t make financial sense to rip out the existing suite, which was still in good condition. Although it’s not the style we would have chosen ourselves, the configuration of the suite makes good use of the space and it does the job. To make it more in keeping with our style, we painted the walls a dark shade to add a bit of drama and decided to extend this onto the ceiling, too. I’ve added house plants, artworks and a new light fitting as a quick fix.’

Jessy has given the bathroom a mini makeover using Farrow & Ball’s Railings. ‘The dark shade stands out against the white bathroom suite and gives the room character’

What I learned... O Invest in pieces that won’t date and are designed to last. I mix and match more expensive furniture with affordable accessories and I’m always conscious of how much I spend on things that are likely to go out of fashion in a year or two. O When it comes to DIY, don’t cut corners as you’ll always pay the price in the end. Set aside enough time to finish a project properly and don’t rush into the next job as you’ll sacrifice quality for the sake of getting things done.

Jessy came across this cabinet in a charity shop while in search of storage options to go with the built-in wardrobes

O While renovating the house I had to keep reminding myself that this isn’t our forever home to ensure we stuck to our budget. We decided not to do any major structural work as this may not pay off in the long run, but instead focused on making the interior homely and to our tastes.

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Grace Foster and I live here with my husband Stuart. We work full-time, me in finance and Stuart in IT.

Where I live Home is a 1940s threebedroom end-of-terrace house in Aldridge, West Midlands. We moved here in July 2018.

What I wanted to change

Feature & Styling Zoe Bishop Photos Lizzie Orme F

The fireplace in the front sitting room was too modern and looked out of place with the rest of the house, so we replaced it with a more traditional fire.

How I made it my own As the whole interior of the house was cream, even the ceilings, we painted every room within the first weeks of moving in, and then had fresh carpet fitted. It instantly felt homelier.

My favourite part The sitting room. I had a clear vision of how I wanted it to look and it always feels welcoming. ‘We found the new fireplace on eBay for just £200, including the surround, hearth and fire. It really makes the room and creates the perfect focal point,’ says Grace. The cushions and pompom throw, in her favourite colour, navy, came from Dunelm

Living room

Style idea Add interest to a plain wall with little planter shelves

‘This was the first room we decorated as I had such a clear vision of how I wanted it to look. I love blue, especially navy. and knew it was going to be a dominant colour in the room. I painted the chimney breast in Denim Drift from Dulux. I really didn’t like the original fireplace as it was too modern, so I scoured the internet and found one with a stove and hearth from eBay for a total of £200 – bargain! It looks amazing and I love it. The sofa was from DFS but it looks really expensive. I always wanted a footstool and found this one from DFS too; it’s from a different range to the sofa but it matches perfectly. I’ve used lots of navy throws and cushions from Dunelm to complement the décor and give the room a slightly regal feel’.

‘We’re very quick workers and had everything finished within eight months, including a new kitchen and bathroom’

house to flow colour scheme, Grace Foster turned her 1940s terrace into a welcoming retreat February 2020 51

‘What I loved most about our DFS sofa is the the button-back detail,’ says Grace. Family photos are displayed on shelves, as well as the couple’s wedding invitations, which Grace framed

My story... We had been looking to move back to the local area since we got married and decided Aldridge was the place for us as it was close to our family. We had been searching for quite a while and viewed 15 houses before we found this 1940s end of terrace. As soon as I walked through the door I knew it was the one – I didn’t even need to see upstairs. I loved the layout, and the kitchen and the range oven were on my dream list! I knew the house would need a lot of decorating to make it our own, but thankfully nothing major was called for. I always make a plan of what we need for each room and then research where to get the best deal, so we managed to keep to a very low budget. Stuart is also really hands-on and creative, and he did most of the jobs himself such as replacing all the doors in the house, which has saved us a lot of money. We’re very quick workers and had everything finished within eight months including a new kitchen and bathroom. I love a project so I’m sure we will always have some small jobs on the go, but hopefully now we will have more time to simply enjoy the home we have created. I love the way that the house flows now and I always feel so cosy and relaxed. It really is a joy to come home to. 52 homestylemag.co.uk

In the snug, Grace used light blues with pops of yellow for contrast. The colours work really well, especially in summer when she throws open the French windows to the garden

Expert advice How to make your fireplace the hottest feature in the room Make sure you get it right with this sound advice O Tiling can work well to upgrade any fireplace. There’s a huge range of adhesive tiles on the market that can be used to cover the surround of a fireplace for an affordable makeover. O If you want to replace a working gas fire and its surround call in the professionals who’ll need to be registered ‘Gas Safe’ (gassaferegister.co.uk). There are many choices, from a simple

modern gas fire to ‘log-burner’ gas fire designs. O Consider a floating beam instead of a fireplace – it is a great option for a hearth with no surround. Use a reclaimed beam or an online retailer. Try www.celtictimber.co.uk or www.traditionalbeams.com. O For a quick and easy makeover you could paint parts of the fireplace or the surrounding wall. If your fireplace has brass inserts, which can look dated, bring them bang on trend by painting them black or white to create a subtle statement. O If DIY isn’t your thing, find a huge mirror to top the mantle, or adorn the wall above with a striking artwork.

Kitchen

The kitchen units are from DiyKitchens.co.uk and were half the price of a high-street brand. They came ready assembled, which made the kitchen quick and easy for Grace and Stuart to install

We fell in love with the open-plan layout of the kitchen-dining space but we didn’t like the original cabinets, which were dark pine. We replaced the units and reconfigured the layout of the room, making sure the space was utilised properly. Kitchens can be such a big expense, but I was lucky to find these stunning units from DiyKitchens.co.uk, and they came ready-made so we fitted them ourselves. We managed to revamp the entire kitchen for around £2,500. Sadly, that didn’t include changing the slate floor tiles, which aren’t my favourite, but they do work well with the open-brick space for the range cooker.

Style idea An upholstered bed is perfect for luxe style and comfort

Master bedroom

‘I wanted to create a chic hotel style, with the dark wood furniture and upholstered bed’ 56 homestylemag.co.uk

We decided to go with a statement colour in our main bedroom and painted the walls with Shepton Fountain by Hemsley, a heritage shade that has since been discontinued. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the paint and how well it went on the walls, and the finish is beautiful. I accessorised with dark wood furniture and an upholstered bed to create a chic hotel style. I’ve kitted the room out with high-street buys from Wilko, Matalan and IKEA, but invested in crisp white linen and luxury throws from Weaver Green and The Grey Heron. I would love to add some wooden panelling to the walls as I think it will look amazing and be quite timeless.

Inspiring homes An IKEA Hemnes daybed transforms the spare room from a dressing-cum-relaxing space into a useful guest bedroom

Plant hangers fixed to the wall allow Grace to add greenery and texture to the room

‘I used two old shelves to create a dressing table,’ says Grace. ‘It’s simple to make, looks effective and it’s practical too’

The starting point for the bathroom was floor tiles from Walls and Floors, with a roll-top corner bath from Victoria Plumb. An elegant shower adds to the traditional feel

What I learned... O To ensure I get the look right I use a collage app – it’s like a digital moodboard – and it soon shows if there’s an element that doesn’t work. My husband is honest and will say if he doesn’t like something! O I take a lot of inspiration from Instagram and enjoy sharing pictures to our home account @meet_the_fosters_ I also like to take inspiration from our holidays; even a café could spark a theme of how I would like a room to look. O Don’t rush paint colours or follow trends. We changed the kitchen wall three times and then went back to our original favourite. O I would love a real ‘project house’ next, potentially the forever home, to be able to start everything from scratch rather than working with what we had here.

Make the look... DUTCH HOUSE LANTERNS Take a leaf out of Grace’s style book and light up any ledges with these tiny townhouses, built for tealights You will need Try using coloured card, instead of white, for houses that match your scheme. Use cellophane sweet wrappers in the windows for a stainedglass effect.

1

Download the Dutch house lantern template from homestylemag.co.uk. Print the template onto paper and glue it on to a sheet of white card. Using a craft knife and a ruler, carefully cut out the house template, including the windows and doors. Cover the windows and doors with a piece of tracing paper, and glue it into place. Using the blunt side of the craft knife, score the lines between the walls of the house, the end flap and the bottom section and flaps. Fold and assemble the house (with the template and tracing paper on the inside) and glue the tabs. Create different size houses by enlarging or reducing the template. When you’ve finished, place the LED tealights inside each house.

ith an ever-growing awareness of the impact our lives are having on the planet, where we’re sourcing our homeware from is more important now than ever. This year, there’s a big focus on mindful purchasing and making informed decisions in regards to where and how our products have been made. And going eco doesn’t mean compromising on style – there are lots of amazing brands making beautiful, durable items in a sustainable way. Many of the bigger homeware stores now offer an eco range, but you can also look to designers in your area too. Purchasing locally-made products is an opportunity to support independent makers and stores, as well as cutting back on emissions from delivery. Green is definitely the new black.

Bamboo is one of the most easily renewable materials available, as the harvesting process is done without impacting the surrounding environment, plus it’s grown needing very few pesticides and irrigation. Placing bamboo products around the home creates a beautiful, natural aesthetic and a sense of calm. For furniture, there are tons of options available that won’t harm the planet. Shopping for antiques is an opportunity to give a once-loved piece a new lease of life, which can be easily styled up or left to exhale its shabby-chic vibe. Upcycling is also a great choice – how about transforming wooden pallets into seats or a bed frame? Avoid manmade fibres, instead choosing recycled or natural materials. Naturally dyed or un-dyed fabrics look minimal and undone in the best possible way.

Seventies style This timeless, laid-back-luxe vibe is about to make a serious comeback

T

he free-loving spirit of the Seventies is making a stellar return to interiors in 2020. We’ve been seeing little glimpses of it for a while now, with the resurgence of bohemia in recent years – however, this time around, it’s a little more subtle and stripped back. There’s still plenty of trailing greenery and patterned fabrics, but taking centre stage is the curvaceous furniture the decade is synonymous with. Think plumped-up sofas, statement rounded chairs and chic drinks cabinets. Combined with elements of contemporary styling and clean, soft colours, it’s this year’s way of injecting effortless glamour into your home.

Style notes

Focusing on a single statement piece is a great way to champion this vibe. A deep rattan sofa or a curved wooden dining table can set the overall tone of the room, without being too over the top. Beautiful plants breathe life into this style. A well-placed Monstera in a terracotta pot, or a beautiful trailing plant hung from the ceiling looks effortlessly chic and brightens up your space. Woven and knotted décor is your next step to a Seventies haven. Go understated with a macramé hanger, or for a bigger statement, choose an oversized, detailed wall tapestry.

rt-inspired homeware has the ability to express a variety of moods, adding quiet playful nods or taking charge of the entire ambience. Whatever your preference, there’s a way to implement this style into your home. Shapes, fine lines and a bold use of colour are the primal foundations of this trend; we’ve seen each of these elements creeping into interiors over the past year. For 2020, it’s time to be daring, mixing and matching prints and objects through your rooms. Luckily, this is easily done – abstract art and geometric shapes can be incorporated into your furniture, lighting, fabrics, and decorations. Style notes

Choose block colouring in bold, yet slightly muted shades – think dusky pinks, bottle greens, dark greys and inky blues. Try painting a feature wall in each room for a less heavy look or go all-out and coat the entire room in your favourite colour. Include illustration in your furnishings. Simple line drawings, most commonly of faces or bodies, are going to be everywhere this year and are easily worked into your décor through framed prints, printed cushions and rugs, or more discreetly through kitchenware like mugs and plates. Incorporate shapes into your space. This can be done through geo patterns in rugs and throws, or in a more stand-out way – we love large circular mirrors hung at eye-level. February 2020 81

Potted plants and herbs are a pretty addition to a contemporary kitchen

Kitchen makeover Seana had a strong vision for her home. She chose the brick tiles, a retro-style fridge and the two Industville brass dome pendant lights over the island unit, knowing that the industrial styling was exactly what she and Brian wanted

‘This house has been a real team effort’ Since buying their home Seana McConville and her husband, Brian, have spent every weekend and holiday doing DIY, with Brian’s dad, brother and their local plumber helping as well

My room... My problem kitchen The layout was unwelcoming. The toilet was opposite the front door, with a gloomy bedroom to the left and a dining room to the right, which served as a corridor to the small kitchen.

A bit about me I’m Seana McConville. I live with my husband, Brian, and our two sons, Eoghan, 11 and Barra, 6, in a four-bedroom house in Northern Ireland.

How I made it work We knocked down some walls to create a bright open-plan space, with a kitchen diner on the left and sitting area on the right with French doors to the back garden. The original kitchen is now the utility room and larder. Now the first thing you see when you walk in is our wonderful woodburning stove, installed by the brilliant Jim Beattie at Lurgan Plumbing Supplies. I did the decorating and finishing touches.

I love the bare brick feature wall. It has given our home a cool industrial edge, which we have tried to carry right through the house with carefully chosen furniture and accessories.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home

Carefully consider window treatment. Seana and Brian chose uPVC windows in charcoal and are delighted with them. Practical and contemporary, ‘the chunky structure is perfect for the slightly industrial style of décor we’ve chosen,’ Seana points out. White wooden Venetian blinds are an ideal window treatment in a kitchen, ‘a great way to control the light on a sunny day, plus they’re minimal and unobtrusive’.

Honour the period of your property as much as you can. ‘The house was built in the 1960s and we have tried to respect this in all design choices,’ Seana says. ‘We collect midcentury furniture and love fabrics and artwork from that time. The 1960s is my favourite era,’ she explains. ‘I love Motown and soul music and even sing in local pubs and clubs!’

Don’t rush into a renovation: get to know the house. ‘We took our time with big decisions and were able to shop around for important pieces,’ Seana says. ‘We researched and doublechecked our choices and did our homework. We were on a tight budget and could not afford to make mistakes. We did not want to have to re-do anything and it was important that our home was exactly right for us.’ 86 hhomestylemag.co.uk t l k

‘I work in housing and planning so I am used to visualising properties. I have learnt useful spatial awareness skills through my work’

Kitchen makeover

Style idea Adding contemporary prints and typographic artwork adds interest without spoiling the minimalist aesthetic

My experience… Our vision when we bought the house was to knock through the kitchen and dining room, but the wall between the two rooms was structural, so we ended up doing a much more radical transformation and turned three rooms into one, leaving the original kitchen as a useful utility room and larder. Because the new kitchen is open plan, it is really important not to have too much clutter around, so the storage is crucial. There was a lot to do. We bought the house in 2017 and we had to get the basics right before we could start on any of the fun bits. We had to bring gas into the house and install a boiler and central heating. We also rewired the whole house. Next we focused on the boys’ bedrooms, as we wanted them to feel settled. We started on this space next and it took a long time as we were doing everything ourselves in our spare time. Luckily we still had the original kitchen, fully functioning, and it is a big enough house that we could avoid the building work. Brian took the walls down one at a time, trying to keep the dust and dirt to a minimum. It was a big project, and not without drama – Brian hurt his hand badly towards the end, so his Dad had to lay the flooring, but we got there in the end.

My shopping list

The space that Seana and Brian have created is perfectly proportioned. Seana works in planning for the local council and has developed a great sense of spatial awareness. The framed ‘This Must Be The Place’ print is from We Are Amused

Quick & easy KITCHEN UPDATES

Can you revamp your kitchen without breaking the bank? Yes, you can! Be inspired with these easy, affordable and super-speedy ideas…

T

he kitchen is the hub of the home, so it’s important to make it an uplifting, stylish and happy space. This can be a challenge if your cabinetry has seen better days and your budget won’t stretch to a remodel. But don’t fret, we’ve got 10 makeover ideas that require very little cash, even less DIY prowess and are so quick to complete that you’ll be enjoying your new-look kitchen before the weekend (or the day!) is out.

1

HANG ARTWORK

In stant Update

The kitchen is often overlooked when it comes to displaying art, but why miss out on so much prime wall space? Displaying prints, photos, paintings or even a collection of plates can really personalise the space. If you’re struggling for ideas, there are lots of fun and quirky typography prints available online at posterlounge.co.uk. FAST FLOOR FIX

In stant Update

If the floor is letting your kitchen down, there’s a simple solution: cover it up! The easiest and most affordable way to do this is with a rug, which you can then take with you when you move on. If you have a neutral kitchen, introduce colour and pattern through the floor covering, which will help draw the eye away from those drab cabinets. A rug is a multifunctional decorating tool as it brings personality to the space, zones an area, introduces texture and is warm underfoot. Choose a durable design as kitchens are high-traffic areas.

PAINT YOUR CABINETS

If your kitchen is looking a little dated, try giving it a lick of paint. A fresh coat will instantly transform the space. For a super-fast revamp use chalk paint, as you don’t need to sand or prime the cabinets first. There are heaps of ‘how-to’ tutorials online, but a great starting point is the queen of chalk paint Annie Sloan (anniesloan.com).

INVEST IN APPLIANCES

Appliances shouldn’t be overlooked when planning a kitchen makeover as they have the power to raise the style stakes in seconds. Trading in a tired old toaster and a drab kettle for stylish new models is money well spent, as they’ll bring serious bling to your worktops. Appliances now come in a whole spectrum of colours, patterns and designs so you can inject personality into your kitchen without having to pick up a paint brush. A free-standing fridge in a vibrant yellow, hot pink or day-glow orange will be a talking point of the room.

Thor light tan leather kitchen door handles, from £16.99, Dowsing and Reynolds

UPDATE YOUR Afternoon Job HARDWARE

Hardware has serious pulling power in a kitchen, in more ways than one. Handles are the ultimate finishing touch to a cabinet and the design you choose can dramatically change the aesthetic of your kitchen. A vintage vibe can be achieved with cup pulls or porcelain knobs, but switch to a streamlined brushed steel or matt black rectangular T-bar handle and the same cabinet will instantly take on a more contemporary feel. Brass and copper finishes continue to be a hot trend while leather strap handles are becoming increasingly more popular in the kitchen as they are beautifully tactile.

FRESHEN UP FABRICS

Kitchen textiles such as tea towels, oven gloves, seat cushions, place mats and aprons are small design details but they can make a big impact for a small expense. Great news for tenants or anyone on a seriously low budget wanting a quick, affordable facelift. Experiment with pattern and colour, and think about creating a sense of cohesion by introducing an accent colour to your kitchen with matching materials. And don’t forget kitchen lighting – fabric pendants are easily changed and can help pull your scheme together.

SMARTEN UP THE SPLASHBACK

If you have a lacklustre wall or a splashback that needs sprucing up, try adhesive wall tiles, which are fast, fuss-free and come in a fab range of colours and styles. Most peel-and-stick tiles designed for the kitchen are waterproof and heat resistant, so won’t struggle to cope in the space. Decoriia Studio on Etsy has a gorgeous selection of tile stickers and check out Limelace.co.uk for wallpaper splashbacks that look just like real tiles. The most timeconsuming part of this project is choosing which design you like the best.

WORK THE WALLS

Weekend Project

Steering away from all white, interior colour trends this year are embracing a darker colour palette with shades of bottle green, navy blue and slate greys continuing to be a popular choice for kitchen cabinetry. But these colours can work just as well on the walls. So if your existing colour scheme is white and you want a fresh new look, be bold and opt for a deep dramatic wall colour to create a luxurious look for less. And for even more of a style statement, roll out the wallpaper – an intricate design will look amazing in the kitchen.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

In stant Update

There’s something really quite lovely about having plants in the kitchen. Not only are they an affordable and versatile decorating tool, but they bring natural colour into the space and help purify the air too. So many positives for plants! Depending on the size of your kitchen, you could have lush hanging plants like English Ivy trailing above the sink or smaller pot plants such as the low-maintenance spider plant and aloe vera sitting on a worktop, on a shelf or in planters fixed to the wall. Introduce herbs too and keep them in stylish little pots that work with your scheme.

10 Retro wooden wall shelf, £62.99, Wayfair

INSTALL OPEN SHELVING

Afternoon Job

Open shelving will add interest to your kitchen and create a sense of space. The shelving, and the items you display, lets you stamp your style on the room. Wire racking can evoke a vintage industrial vibe, while reclaimed oak shelving can complement a farmhouse-style kitchen or add texture and warmth to a contemporary space. And if you don’t have the wall space for additional shelving, remove one or two cupboard doors from an existing cabinet and create an open display that way. Just remember to keep the doors if you’re a tenant.

‘Taking on the work ourselves kept costs down’

The traditional free-standing bath is the centrepiece of Katie’s new bathroom and it takes pride of place beneath the window. She has accessorised with an assortment of house plants and foliage to complement the jungle-inspired feature wallpaper and to tie the theme together

As keen DIY enthusiasts, Katie Fox and her husband, Andy, were able to tackle their bathroom makeover themselves and design a stylish space to suit their young family

My room... My problem bathroom

Feature and styling Cassie Pryce Photos Simon Whitmore

A bit about me I’m hairdresser Katie Fox. I live with my husband, Andy, and kids, Owen, 5, and Lillie, 11, in a 1930s semi-detached house in Castleford, West Yorkshire.

We had installed the previous bathroom ten years ago and it was starting to show its age. It was a plain white suite with neutral tiles and, although practical, the shower over the bath felt cramped. The room lacked character and colour, and didn’t fit in with our style throughout the rest of the house.

How I made it work To open up the footprint of the room, we moved the boiler downstairs from a cupboard in the bathroom, which instantly gave us more space to work with. It meant we could fit in both a free-standing bath and separate shower area. Andy and I did nearly all of the work ourselves to keep costs down. I chose a statement wallpaper as a fun focal point to give the room some ‘wow’ factor!

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home

Get creative with upcycling ‘I sourced the vanity unit from a local antiques seller and Andy modified it to house the plumbing for the countertop basin’, recalls Katie. ‘It really is amazing what a lick of paint and new handles can do to an old piece of furniture and you end up with a truly unique piece that has a story to tell.’

Don’t be afraid of rejigging the room’s layout Don’t feel constrained by the existing plan. ‘We ended up moving everything around to make better use of the space’, explains Katie. ‘It took more time, as we had to re-plumb, but it meant that we were able to squeeze extra components into the floorspace.’

Keep your options open; don’t rush into decisions Katie had ideas but waited until big pieces were fitted before purchasing anything. ‘I gathered inspiration for colours and patterns, mainly through Instagram where I have an account [@ living_at_number_3],’ she says . ‘I found it paid off to be patient, as my ideas evolved as the project progressed.’ 98 hhomestylemag.co.uk t l k

Bathroom makeover Monochrome patterned tiles make the back wall of the shower enclosure a feature and balance out the simplicity of the more pared-back blush-pink tiles on the adjacent wall

Style idea A Crittall-style shower screen gives this part of the room a designer look, yet Katie managed to source it online for just over £250

My experience… Although the previous family bathroom had served us well over the years, Andy and I both felt it was time for a change, as the neutral style jarred against the rest of our colourful home. Measuring 2m x 3m, it’s not the biggest of rooms so we had to be clever with the way we planned the layout. I’d always liked the idea of having a free-standing bath beneath the window, but to do this we had to relocate the boiler which was sitting in a bulky cupboard in the corner of the room. Once this had been moved and the section of wall re-plastered by professionals, Andy got to work on the rest of the installation along with the help of his dad, Steve. Being able to do the majority of work ourselves meant we saved thousands of pounds on labour costs, which allowed us to splash out on other elements of the bathroom design. We chose a Crittall-style shower enclosure with generous dimensions, as a treat after years of showering above the bath, and I sourced a mixture of tiles, patterned and plain, to highlight different sections of the walls and floors. Once the paint and wallpaper went up, it felt like we were on the home stretch and it was exciting to see the project coming together. It’s very satisfying to be able to take a soak in the bath and look around at what we’ve achieved. All of our hard work has certainly paid off and it’s now a room we enjoy spending time in.

Use a feature wallpaper to define a seating area

Kelly wanted to create a dining room where they could relax with friends. Removing the wall between it and the hallway made space for a comfy velvet sofa, as well as the table 102 homestylemag.co.uk

Dining room makeover

We hardly ever used this room before Kelly Flood’s bold use of colour and pattern has given her new dining room a glam, boutique hotel bar vibe

My room... My problem dining room To get to the dining room from the kitchen was tricky, with a wall and two doors to navigate. The décor was dated with textured wallpaper and a gas fire. The space had little natural light.

A bit about me I’m Kelly Flood, a freelance art director and I live with my partner, Toby, and our son, Indy, who’s nine, in a threebedroom house in Whitby Bay, Newcastle.

TOTAL

How I made it work We took out the wall between the hallway and dining room, making a more open-plan space. We added French windows, so the space opened onto our back yard (the ‘Before’ picture was taken at this point). I did lots of the prep, including stripping wallpaper, with Toby opening up the wall and fireplace and redecorating. I fell in love with a dramatic wallpaper, which set the colour scheme for the space, however it was expensive, so I had to shop smart and picked up some great key pieces online.

My favourite part

£3,171 Before

It has to be the wallpaper! I’d seen it used in bars and restaurants and on Pinterest, and even though I looked for a cheaper design, I couldn’t find anything I loved half as much. February 2020 103

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home

Reflect pattern with a mirror ‘The mirror was an eBay bargain at just 99p,’ says Kelly. ‘We placed it in the alcove, where it reflects the wallpaper and my green and blue glassware collection on the trolley. I couldn’t believe it when I found the trolley on Facebook for a tenner!’ says Kelly. ‘It’s become such a feature of the space and just perfect for when friends come around.’

Fake it with an electric stove ‘A wood-burner’s over budget at the moment,’ says Kelly, ‘but this electric stove from Dunelm fitted the gap.’ The bricks in the chimneybreast weren’t good enough to expose, so she made a feature of a single row. They have a lovely blush colour that works with the cushions and accent pieces Kelly has added to the room.

Shop for one or two hero buys ‘I love the monkey lamp from Dunelm – it has exactly the quirky hotel bar vibe I wanted to create and is a great talking point,’ says Kelly. Brass highlights and touches of blush pink help stop the dark blue scheme from being too overpowering. The vintage sideboard, from a local auction house, is a record player and has a lovely mid-century feel. 104 hhomestylemag.co.uk t l k

Style idea Blush, as in these frames, is a great accent colour for more moody colours – a little goes a long way

Dining room makeover Light from new French doors helps balance the dark scheme, which is rich and inviting. Kelly fell in love with the tropical leaf Cole & Son wallpaper, pulling out the shades of inky blue and teal for furniture and accessories

‘I loved the blue paint shade so much that we’ve used it in the hallway, painting the lower half of the walls with it’

My experience… Friends can’t believe the transformation of our dining room – it’s become that wonderful entertaining space that I always wanted. When we bought the house, it had been owned by an elderly lady and was rather dated. Room by room, we’re slowly getting rid of the textured wallpaper and creating a fun, modern space that reflects us as a family. Last autumn, I started to pick at the old wallpaper, and the next thing… I’d stripped off the lot! We then decided to open up the room, making it flow better through from the kitchen. Next went the gas fire. We hoped that we’d be able to expose the bricks of the chimneybreast, but they weren’t in great condition. With the new French windows fitted, it was time to replaster, making a feature of the curved bricks above the fireplace. The original floorboards were in good shape, so we got them resanded – luckily, they ran through to the hallway. With my dream wallpaper as my starting point, I began to plan the decorative and furnishing scheme. High on my wish list was a sofa, so we could use this as a grown-up entertaining space when friends came around, leaving the living room free for the kids. I’d set a budget of about £500, but pushed it slightly when I saw this royal blue sofa in Dunelm. We picked out the blue from the wallpaper for the walls, helping to create a glam feel, which we balanced with lots of white woodwork. We loved the blue so much that we took it into the hallway, painting the lower half of the walls with it. I had some great eBay finds: the large mirror was just 99p, but we’ve chickened out of hanging it on the wall, leaning it instead. The drinks trolley was a bargain at £10 on a local Facebook page – and friends love it! Plus, it gives me the chance to collect lovely coloured glassware and drinks bottles.

DRESS TO

Impress Don’t overlook the impact that stylishly dressed windows can have on the look and comfort of your home

W

hether you’re dressing them purely to provide privacy and warmth, or you want to make the window a design feature in itself, there is a huge variety of different materials and styles that you can cleverly use, mix and match to enhance any room.

SHEER ELEGANCE Clever use of voile curtains can bring a romantic look to your room. These are best used in a living room or lounge, where you don’t require complete darkness. They’re also a lot less bulky than a lined curtain, which adds to the ethereal look that they help create. Layer different colours to swathe your room in warm light, or opt for sheer white to make the space feel lighter. If privacy is an issue then voile curtains can also work well as a middle layer between your window and a heavier drape, acting as a halfway point between opened up and closed. Or drape voiles dreamily in front of Roman blinds. For a beautiful vintage look, try joining together sheer voile panels, each with a different floral pattern. Choose patterns that complement each other in terms of colour and design. This look would lend itself to a traditional country bedroom, in which case combine it with a blackout blind.

Easy Style updates advice

COVER UP C A great way to provide privacy in your bathroom, but sstill let light in, is through the use of window decals. TThese also neatly side step the risk of curtains or blinds gradually going mouldy in poorly-ventilated rooms. g Decal design and quality has come a long way in recent D yyears and can look uber stylish in a modern setting. Try a geometric pattern or something more quirky – you can g have real fun with this approach to window dressing. A h sstained-glass decal can have the same effect as the real tthing, casting atmospheric light across the room. As well aas in your bathroom, this look also works in a hallway or nook. The best thing about decals? They can be easily n rremoved, so you can change your look at any time.

VELVET WONDERLAND

Waves window film pattern, from £14.70 for 50cm x 25cm, Purlfrost Window Film

Embrace the current trend for all things luxe and go bold with floor to ceiling jewel tones in opulent fabrics, such as velvet or silk. Combine with either a simple palette in the rest of the room, or go all out with complementary tones throughout your soft furnishings and wall colours. This would also look fabulous with a dark grey window frame. If this is too bold for your taste, then a toned-down approach would be to go for a more neutral hue, but with a bright trim. Or a reversible fabric; neutral on the interior side and bolder on the outer side, providing a flash of colour without overwhelming the room. To achieve an opulent floor-toceiling look, don’t be restricted by the dimensions of your window frame, and think carefully about the rail you choose. Hang your curtains on the highest point of the wall. This will give the illusion of a larger window. Julius velvet lined pair of eyelet curtains in teal (168cm x 228cm), £69, Made

Full height shutters in turquoise, from £168 per sq m, California Shutters

EXPERT TIP: ”Choosing a vibrant shade can really lift your scheme and brightly coloured shutters make a great alternative to a feature wall. Bold statement colours such as blue, orange and pink are ideal for creating a focal point; adding a vibrant wallpaper will make a real impact. If you are not that brave, consider soft, subtle pastels as a fresh alternative to white, which will add an element of interest without overwhelming a room.” Chrissie Harper, Customer Experience Manager at California Shutters

TIMELESS STYLE Classic white plantation shutters always look good, whatever the decor of your room. You can change your interior colour scheme as often as you like and the shutters will maintain their timeless, effortless style. These look great in any room of the house, but work especially well in your kitchen and dining area, where they can be easily adjusted or folded back in order to control both light and privacy. Another approach is to have ‘café style’ halfway shutters that only cover the lower half of the window. These can then be combined with a drape for a multi-textural effect. While white shutters give a classic vibe, don’t rule out a coloured finish. Inject some personality into your room with a bold blue, yellow or pink. Or enjoy Californian laid back vibes with something more subtle such as a pale pastel finish. If you decided to choose a slatted blind instead, then always go for a wider slat. Mini-slats can result in a dreary office look.

BEAUTIFUL BAYS Many period homes have bay windows at the front of the house, often in the living room and the master bedroom. They present a wonderful opportunity to play with textures and layers. Roman blinds are a great solution, as they can be individually fitted to each section of the bay, and opened and closed separately. Add some character with tassels, pompoms, beads or crystals. Pick out a colour from the blind and layer up the look with a weighty, classic drape to match – this is ideal for a bedroom as it not only adds a touch of elegance, but also an extra level of insulation and protection from unwanted light.

EXPERT TIP: “Layer up! Sleep is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle and the right window dressings in a bedroom can help us get more of it. Curtains with a thermal lining layered with a Roman blind with a blackout lining will give you the best of both worlds; helping to prevent heat loss and extra light pouring into your room and spoiling your sleep.” Yvonne Keal, Senior Product Manager, Hillarys 110 homestylemag.co.uk

Style advice Easy updates White painted bamboo roller blinds, from £140 for 80cm x 160cm, Colour & Co

PATIO SOLUTIONS Bi-fold or patio doors can be challenging to dress. As well as wanting to be able to easily open and close the doors, you do need to be able to control the light shining in, plus create a cosy atmosphere on a dark evening. An integrated blind fitted into each section of the door frame is a neat and practical solution. Another bespoke option is one large, wide blind, across the whole door, rather than individual sections integrated within each pane. The only downside to integrated blinds is they can lack a bit of character. If you’re after a slightly softer look, with more character, then roller blinds work brilliantly in this setting, with one hung in each pane. Bamboo is a great look for the kitchen; stylised yet laid back, and still allowing some light to filter through even when rolled down.

EXPERT TIP: “Roller blinds are easy to fit and use, making them perfect for a space such as a patio door. Try a more sustainable material such as bamboo, which can be woven to offer a range of sheerness so you can choose how much light you would like to filter into the room. Choosing a neutral colour also means your blind will work with any interior scheme and future updates you may have planned.” Rikke Kristina Flachs and Sofie Melson, Founders of Color & Co

combined. Divide the mixture into two bowls. Fold in enough red colouring gel to reach the desired shade into one bowl and leave the other plain. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to ½ cm thick. Cut out heart shapes with two different heart-shaped cookie cutters (about 5cm and 7cm, although it’s fine to use just one size). Place the cookies on the baking trays, then chill in the fridge for 15 mins. Bake the cookies for 6-8 mins (depending on size), until just turning golden at the edges. Leave to cool fully on a wire rack. Meanwhile, make the cream filling. Whisk the butter in a bowl, then begin whisking in the icing sugar, a little at a time. Then whisk in some of the red colouring gel and the lemon juice. Spoon the mixture into a piping bag fitted with a medium-sized round nozzle. Sandwich the cookies with the buttercream and dust tops with icing sugar. Put carefully into a pretty, airtight jar to give as a present. Iced, these should be eaten on the same day. If un-iced, they will last for five days.

Gradually beat in the eggs, then stir in the vanilla extract. Sift the flour, salt and cocoa powder together, then gently fold it into the creamed mixture using a large metal spoon. Stir in the milk. Share the mixture between the prepared tins and level the tops. Bake for 18-20 minutes until risen and firm. Check that they are cooked by inserting a fine skewer into the centre – it should come out clean. If necessary, bake for a little longer. Cool in the tins for 3-4 minutes, then turn out carefully ready to serve. To make the sauce, put all the ingredients into a saucepan and heat gently, stirring constantly until thickened and smooth. Serve with the bunds and sprinkle over a little icing sugar or crumbled sweets. To give as a gift, place each cake in a clear presentation bag and tie with string or ribbon. In that time, we have renovated every room. Some have needed just a good clean and a lick of paint, others have been ripped out and we’ve started from scratch. We fell in love with the Victorian features that give the house so much character. This was the first room to be completed, with painting commencing the very night we moved in. Mustard & monochrome The bedroom is my number one room in the house because it’s a mixture of all my favourite styles – Scandi, boho and Mid-century. The plants add a pop of colour against the white and neutral tones. I’d lusted after some West Elm furniture for years and finally decided to splurge on new bedside tables for our five-year wedding anniversary (the traditional gift just so happens to be wood!). This is actually my husband’s side, but he doesn’t mind that I rearrange his table to hide all the practical, ugly stuff and replace them with pretty accessories! @nest_number_9

Rose and shine In our home, we’ve tried to enhance and celebrate its beautiful period features while adding contemporary, modern and industrial twists throughout. In our bedroom, the panelling and fireplace are key elements of its Edwardian era, but the pink gives it a playful and current feel. We wanted it to be a cosy, peaceful sanctuary that really enhances the light from the windows. By adding the bold contrast of the blue bed, it gives the space a little more edge. @roseontherow

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Leoma Harper We speak to the interior stylist and influencer @styletheclutter How did it all begin? It all kicked off four years ago after we moved house. I started what I thought would be a little log book on Instagram, documenting projects around the house. Friends saw it and started to ask me to help with their homes. Within weeks, I was working on four houses on the street where we used to live and I have been busy ever since.

Describe a typical day Alongside doing up client homes, I also do product styling on shoots for brands and writing for interiors blogs and brands. When the sun shines, I’m running around the house, trying to get a quick Instagram shot! Each day can be extremely different. Take inspiration from Leoma’s high-contrast look

Tell us something weird and wonderful about yourself

Feature Catherine Smalley Photos Leoma Harper

As a child, the moment we moved house I would be attacking my new bedroom with a paint brush. Aged 9, while my parents were busy unpacking, I was busy peeling off the wallpaper in my room – they came up to find it all piled up on the floor!

Describe your style I would describe it as a mix of rustic French and Scandinavian design. I love combining old and new, adding contrasts with pops of colour and finishing off with different textures.

Can a home be both stylish and practical? Most definitely! That is how my business and blog, Style the Clutter, came about. I 130 homestylemag.co.uk

was determined to keep my home stylish while still being practical for family life. It’s all about being clever with storage. Also, decorating walls with sleek shelves and investing in statement lights are fabulous ways to add style that can’t be touched by small hands!

Who are you stalking on Instagram? I love @rvk_loves. Her style is so elegant and calming. And her garden is out of this world – she grows everything from the prettiest flowers to pumpkins.

Who would you swap homes with and why? I loved watching Jessica Alba’s house tour on Architectural Digest. I would happily swap homes with her! It is a stunning yet family friendly interior by Clements Design.

What is your proudest career moment? There’s nothing more satisfying than adding the final touches to a client’s home. I always feel very pleased with myself when a project is complete. I was also a finalist at the Amara Interior Blog Awards last year – I didn’t win, but getting to the finals was amazing.

How’s 2020 looking? We are planning to extend and open up our kitchen, so fingers crossed this year will be the year it happens.
