How great does it feel when you finally get working on a design project you’ve kept on the back burner for way too long? You wonder why you ever waited to do something that’s so obviously beneficial. My latest example: creating space – seemingly out of thin air – in my daughter’s bedroom.

It all begins with the unwritten law of the first child getting the biggest room and its unfortunate trickle-down effect. First come, first served, I guess! I was the youngest child, so I grew up in smaller spaces. I shared a room with one of my sisters until the oldest – who scored the coveted basement bedroom with a waterbed (so ’90s!) – left the nest and gave me room to spread my wings.

As we do, I sort of repeated my childhood with my own kids: my oldest has the biggest space above the garage while my youngest occupies the smallest bedroom in the house. Since we all found it a bit too cramped in there, we decided to get her a loft bed, which opened up muchneeded space below. Then, we set up a small desk that cleverly doubles as a wardrobe. We really maximized the space and, I must say, it changed everything. Not only is the room more ergonomically designed, it’s more aesthetically pleasing and far more practical, storage-wise.

Problem finally solved.

By the look of our overflowing countertops, however, our household storage problems still loom large – but solutions are within reach! This issue is stacked with clever fixes.

Heaven knows, I need to take them to heart myself. One project at a time….

MAKES 10 TO 12 SERVINGS

Chocolate Crust 2 cups chocolate wafer crumbs ½ cup unsalted butter, melted Filling 170 g dark chocolate, finely chopped (about 6 oz) 115 g milk chocolate, finely chopped (about 4 oz) ½ cup 35% cream ¼ cup unsalted butter, cubed 6 oz Irish whiskey (about ¾ cup) ¼ tsp salt Meringue ¾ cup granulated sugar 3 egg whites ½ tsp cream of tartar Pinch of salt

Chocolate Crust Preheat oven to 350°F. In bowl, stir wafer crumbs with butter; press into bottom and up side of 9-inch fluted tart pan with removable bottom. Place pan on baking sheet; bake until firm, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on rack.

Filling Meanwhile, place dark chocolate and milk chocolate in heatproof bowl. In small saucepan, heat cream with butter over medium-high heat until butter is melted and mixture just begins to boil. Pour cream mixture over chocolate; let stand for 1 minute. Whisk until smooth.

Whisk in whiskey and salt; spread over cooled crust. Refrigerate until cooled, 1½ to 2 hours.

Meringue In large metal bowl set over saucepan of gently simmering water, combine sugar, egg whites, cream of tartar and salt.

Using hand mixer, beat on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form, 5 to 6 minutes; remove from heat. Spoon meringue onto centre of filling; using spatula, spread to edge, making peaks and swirls with back of spoon. Using kitchen blowtorch, toast meringue until golden brown.

Serve immediately.

tip

If you don’t have a kitchen blowtorch to toast the meringue, transfer the tart to the freezer during the last 30 minutes of chilling time; then broil the tart until golden brown (30 seconds to 2 minutes). Be sure to keep an eye on it!

Storage Storage is key for a functional, organized foyer. Baskets are ideal catch-alls: assign one to each member of the household or designate each basket for a specific item.

A small bathroom (especially one with a pedestal sink, which has no under vanity storage) can create challenges for storing daily necessities. I remember over-thetoilet storage from the 1970s – chrome rods that supported (barely!) those flimsy plastic storage cabinets. Even then I always wondered why something more smartly designed wasn’t available. Finally, there’s a handsome easy-to-install solution that maximizes wasted wall space: the Apothecary Over the Toilet Cabinet Space Saver, $345, Bed Bath and Beyond, is a well-made wood design that suits many classic vintage bath looks.

DINING ROOM

When faced with a storage problem in my narrow dining room, I installed a wall of 12-inch-deep upper kitchen cabinets floor to ceiling. A cut-out countertop for serving, mirrored backsplash and glass upper doors all help to lighten the look. The result? Big design impact and loads of storage in one of the smallest rooms in my house.

New York’s most irreverent designer has made it his mission to inject our homes with modern glamour by way of chic, timeless furnishings, and eclectic, colourful accessories. He insists that your home make you happy and has just collaborated with H&M Home and Caesarstone to help you get there.

brings home glamorous, exuberant maximalism or Jonathan Adler, it started at age 12, with a lump of clay and a pottery wheel at summer camp. “I’m not a spiritual person, but I felt a connection as soon as I touched clay,” he says. He started throwing pots and never stopped. Even while “allegedly” studying semiotics and art history at ivy league Brown University, Adler spent most of his time in the potting studio at Rhode Island School of Design. When he moved to New York in the early ’90s to work in show business – an industry that left him thoroughly depressed – Adler finally committed to pottery full time, launching his now famous self-named company. But it wasn’t all a walk in Central Park – he taught pottery in exchange for studio space until 1994, when Barneys placed Adler’s first big order and his career exploded. Taking inspiration from fashion and Californian pop culture, bling and modern art, the tastemaker never veers from his roots in craftsmanship: “Pottery has always been at the centre for my life and my design,” says Adler. “My approach is artisanal, and everything begins in the pottery studio – it’s where I work through all my ideas.”

Key creations Jonathan Adler opened his first store in New York’s SoHo in 1998. By then, his style could already be described in three words: modern American glamour. His is a graphic universe where retro, Palm Beach and Palm Spring references abound. Beyond ceramics, Adler offers up printed textiles inspired by trips to Peru, as well as sofas and armchairs, pillows and throws, side tables and luxe dishware.

Which creations make him most proud? “That’s a bit like asking me to pick my favourite child,” he says. “If I had to choose, it would be my Dora Maar collection – the porcelain vases with faces. I would describe it more as a discovery than a design, and I think that’s why it works: It’s as if it were meant to be. For me, a good design is one that seems like it’s always been in existence, just waiting to be discovered.”

Adler’s empire In less than 20 years, Jonathan Adler has opened 30 stores, published several books and designed interiors for private residences, restaurants and luxe hotels. His motto – “If your heirs won’t fight over it, we won’t make it” – captures Adler’s irreverent attitude to creating impeccably designed and crafted objects. For Adler, chic boils down to personal style, and minimalism almost always ends in disappointment. A love for pottery continues to be central: his office is located between a giant kiln and a pottery studio. Adler says he feels like the luckiest boy in the world. “I’m proud to have built a company where I can do what I want surrounded by extremely talented, hardworking and hilarious people,” he says.

“Diana Vreeland once said that exaggeration was her only reality, and I think that reflects the zeitgeist and what’s on the horizon.

We live in a time of creative chaos, when nothing can go too far.

I absolutely love it and love being part of this bananas moment.”

Forty years after leaving, a homeowner brings new life to the 1960s bungalow she grew up in – who says you can’t go home again?

To give Mireille and Pierre the airy, open kitchen they wanted, Valérie removed a wall between the original kitchen and living room.

The generous new space was divided into activity zones for eating, cooking, relaxing and entertaining.

is at the heart of the new room; behind it is the range – itself a mix of old-world and new, with its massive oak range hood like an imposing chimney in an English country house.

DECORATING A restaurant-style banquette upholstered in countrychic houndstooth is the room’s centrepiece. So often, built-in benches are off in nooks near a window – this one is tucked beside the island, allowing the

hen Mireille Coutu moved back to her childhood home in Repentigny, Quebec, the circa 1960s bungalow held a lot of memories. But to bring the 1,100-squarefoot house into the 21st century would require a major overhaul. A reno this size can be complex, so Mireille and husband Pierre hired designer Valérie St-André to lead the way. The most challenging – and pricey – rooms in any whole-home reno tend to be the kitchen and bath, making working with an expert a smart investment. Valérie drew on the couple’s love of nature for the palette, and brought in elegant but understated top-quality materials and finishes to create a family home that embraces its roots but is designed for a new generation. Its timeless appeal proves the old adage, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

ORDER IN THE HOME

PROBLEM: CLUTTERED CLOSETS A closet can hold a large volume of clothes if you organize it correctly and integrate shelves and baskets. Designer Jean Stéphane Beauchamp says he gained at least 25 per cent more space simply by folding his clothes the Marie Kondo way. Sometimes all you need is a bit of organizational zhuzhing: invest in tall doors, proper lighting, mirrors and a versatile storage system to maximize space.

PROBLEM: YOUR HOME IS ONE ROOM SHORT If your budget allows, consider finishing the basement or even adding a floor or an extension to your house, recommends designer Maryse Leduc.

If your budget is a little tight, expand from the inside by opting for a bunk bed, mezzanine bed, or by giving a room a dual purpose. Consider making one space into two by dividing a room with a fixed or mobile partition (try curtains, bookcases, decorative screen or even doors of frosted glass or sliding barn doors).

PROBLEM: ITEMS ARE PILING UP EVERYWHERE According to designer Gabriela Sube Avalos, old habits are hard to break; more often than not they have a way of overriding our good intentions. Whether it’s papers piling up, mail on the counter, or lunch boxes strewn here and there, Gabriela recommends optimizing storage in places where things naturally tend to accumulate. “Do your kids just toss their coat to the side when they come through the door? Let’s be real, they probably don’t take the time to place it on a hanger and store it in the closet,” says Gabriela. “Installing a few wall hooks could be the solution.”

PROBLEM: YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF BOOK SPACE Marie-Claude Parenteau-Leboeuf, designer, suggests periodical literary triage. “Books collect dust and become allergens,” she says. “We often keep ones we’ll never crack again, so give them away.” Next, categorize remaining books by theme and by room. So all those kitchen and recipe books should go in… the kitchen! More storage options: a floorto-ceiling bookcase in the dining room; a long, mid-height bookcase in the hallway; piles of coffee table books arranged on a console alongside stylish decorative items. Avoid confining books to the living room and overstocking your shelves.

PROBLEM: DISORGANIZED HALLWAY Maximize your vertical space by installing hooks, shelves and wall storage for shoes and boots, says Jean Stéphane. “Free your floor up,” he says. “It’ll make any cramped space appear bigger.” Insider tip: stores sell hardware for hanging strollers, bikes and other bulky items – all are ideal for anyone living in an apartment or condo.

PROBLEM: YOU’RE UPSIZING When you purchase your first home, it’s tempting to run out and buy furniture to fill up every space, even if that means making budget-related compromises. It’s a common mistake, says Jean Stéphane. “It’s better to live in your new space for a while before investing in new furniture,” he advises. Textiles, such as carpets and curtains, help create cozy vibes and absorb the echo of temporarily emptier rooms. Once you’ve lived in your space for a while, start making smart purchases to round it out. The most challenging rooms to furnish are often open-concept dining and living rooms. To fill these spaces without overfilling them, the designer suggests pulling the furniture away from the walls; creating activity zones; and finishing with light fixtures, plants, paintings and photographs.

PROBLEM: THE HOUSE IS FILLED WITH TOYS Having to share the living room with your children’s toys doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a more “adult” space once the kids have gone to bed. To avoid having toys strewn everywhere and to regain control of your living room, sort through and rotate. Maryse advises using a cabinet, toy chest, bin on wheels, or under-bed drawers.

Says Maryse: “Teaching kids good tidying up habits starts with explaining that there is a place for everything and everything in its place. Label bins.

Set rules.” A large bin in which to toss stray toys before sitting down to watch TV is a great idea.

Drawer dividers, sliding shelves behind the pantry door for quick access to ingredients, a garbage drawer with separate compartments for recycling and compost…a well-designed and organized kitchen will make your life easier. “Try freeing up extra space with the storage you already possessions. Get rid of anything you haven’t used in over two years.”

PROBLEM: THE BATHROOM LACKS STORAGE Start by assessing whether you have any unused space or corner where you can slip in an additional shelving unit to help organize your morning clutter, recommends Gabriela. “Sometimes you just have to think outside the box to come up with creative solutions!” she says. Gabriela’s top picks: a shelf on the shower door; a wall-mounted pharmacy mirror; and storage in the vanity’s toe kick, over the toilet, and behind the door. Toronto designer Jessica Kelly fell in love with this 1,500-square-foot Victorian duplex because of its charm and character. But its narrow, compact rooms made it a challenge to decorate. That’s good for us, though, because she’s willing to share the lessons she’s learned.

Homeowner, Know Thyself “Accept that you just can’t have everything,” says Jessica.

“Then focus on the area of the home that means most to you.” In Jessica’s case, priority-one was the kitchen. So, rather than try to save space, she made room for a fullsize island where four could sit comfortably. She also went for big impact with the floor, choosing super-sized glossy diamond-shape tiles. To keep the tiny adjacent dining area feeling open, she left the floors bare. To optimize the cozy (aka: very small!) living room, she created a deliberately intimate seating arrangement.

Shy Not From Shine “Whether it’s on the floor or on the walls, sheen is your friend,” Jessica says. “When light bounces from surface to surface, it keeps the room dynamic, both day and night.” Jessica’s shine items include a living room rug with metallic accents, dining-room wall art fashioned from gleaming repurposed sterling silver banquet domes, and sparkling mirrored bedside tables. Over the island, she hung a wall of antiqued mirror.

Build In Calm “Splurge on built-in storage, and save your pennies elsewhere,” Jessica declares. The bedroom features built-in closets with a display niche. In the dining room, barware is tucked away inside a custom sideboard fashioned from barn boards from Jessica’s parents’ farm. The kitchen’s oak-like cabinetry is packed with clever storage solutions. “There are lots of drawers, slide-outs for spices and tuck-aways for small appliances,” says Jessica. “I even designed a pull-out trash and microwave space in the island!”

Embrace Great Shapes “Small spaces benefit from a neutral palette, including navy blue, but to keep rooms lively and fresh, include interesting sculptural shapes,” says Jessica.

She hung a glorious starburst mirror in the dining area, and placed a set of white antlers behind the sofa. A ladder draped with Moroccan blankets lends vertical interest. In the kitchen, brass strapping was used to emphasize the lines of the range hood. She also added oversized circular knobs to the bedroom closet. In the den, a regal crest reigns over the sofa, and, to make the dining room playful, she brought in baroque dining chairs with leopard-print upholstery.

Loud and Clear “A collection of compact rooms can quickly get busy. So, include a large statement element in each room,” says Jessica, who enhanced her living room window with a dynamic due of attention grabbing drapes and lamp. In both the bedroom and the den, she painted bold navy blue feature walls. The den also offers the luxury of a velvet sofa with black satin pillows; on the walls are old-world vintage horse prints and a painting by Jessica’s grandfather. The bedroom has a grand headboard repurposed from an antique daybed.

F

ive years ago fashion designer Eve Gravel and musician Jean-Phi Goncalves fell in love with this 1,900-square-foot home in Montreal’s Vieux-Rosemont area. “It’s the perfect neighbourhood to raise kids,” says Eve. “There are a ton of green spaces and a great daycare right around the corner.”

After purchasing their dream home, and between fittings and rehearsals, the couple dove right into designing and renovating a home for themselves and their children, Jules, 3, and Gaspard, 5. “We wanted it to be cozy, with a modernmeets-industrial-meets-retro charm. The end result needed to be cohesive, comfortable, stylish and practical,” says Eve, who also garnered pro tips from her close friend, interior designer Anne Tremblay. Most important, the home had to capture the couple’s creativity and their love of buying local. “We got a lot of things made to measure by local entrepreneurs,” says Eve. “We also built things ourselves or recycled old items. It’s all part of our values system.”

LEFT The couple replaced a ho-hum half-wall that separated the entry from the living room with a full feature wall fitted with a pane-less window that has graphic impact. “In addition to letting the light stream in, the black wood frame adds an industrial touch,” says Eve. A white metal and copper rod lighting feature branches out like a tree on the ceiling – so creative! The console’s metallic top has an industrial vibe and is artist-made from recycled ceiling metal. Eve and Jean-Phi love to celebrate the work of other artists and craftspeople.

White hemlock panels extend into the living room. “The white allows the wood elements, furniture and design pieces to really pop,” says Eve. The table’s pipe base has an industrial feel, but its wood top and the glow of the pendant light’s copper-lined bowl bring warmth to the room’s hard edges and materials.

They say keep only that which is useful or beautiful. We say, aim to keep only that which is both. From a welldesigned chair to a drawer pull that’s a pleasure to hold, good design improves lives. As for the usefulness of art? If a painting or a vignette of objects – whether handcrafted or found on a beach – makes you smile, hasn’t that proved its value? No house is too small for such grace notes of beauty.

A breezy open-concept design and wall-to-wall windows mean the serene and earthy condo is drenched in natural light all day long. Designer Kathleen Lin was brought on board after homeowners Mia Romanova and Roberto Liu had chosen finishes for the newly built unit. The goals of the design project became to soften the look of the architecture and create an interior that reflected the young couple’s passion for travel and snowboarding.

A freshly minted condo in downtown Vancouver gives its expat owners a home base that’s close to the action but feels worlds away from everything.

ABOVE The living room feels almost like a separate room, thanks to elements like the simple slatted divider by the front door and the sectional’s high back and pillows that clearly define the space. With their black frames, the caned dining chairs echo the wall-mounted shelves in the living room beyond. The gnarled trunk and mossy base of the giant potted tree trick visitors into believing it’s real – in fact, Kathleen glue-gunned faux leaves to real dried branches.

“For the dining table, they entertain a lot of people, so we needed an extension table, and I wanted reclaimed wood – a piece that’s very organic to stand out between the two living areas,” Kathleen says. “And that quartz chandelier is a showstopper!”

Throughout the main living space, casual rugs define each zone and

quietly inject texture and warmth. By bookending the large, dark TV with tidy wall-mounted shelves, Kathleen made it feel more integrated in the white space. The units, which have iron frames and whitewashed wood shelves, also provide spots to display collectibles – like Mia’s quirky crystaltopped Trolls – in an orderly and intentional way, letting the overall space remain fairly minimalist.

“These are the personal accents that make a space individual,” Kathleen says.

n Vancouver, few places feel more magnetic than Yaletown.

Dotted with buzz-worthy eateries and chic boutiques, with its storied brick warehouses and walkways set off by shiny, new glasswrapped condos, the neighbourhood bustles with life. Certainly, that was the draw for Mia Romanova and Roberto Liu, inveterate world travellers, most often based in Beijing, who fell in love with Vancouver – and its proximity to world-class snowboarding – and bought this 1,700-square-foot Yaletown condo two years ago.

What’s more intriguing here is that within this lively postal code, Mia and local designer Kathleen Lin were able to craft a tranquil sanctuary for the couple, a peaceful aerie high above the hustle and bustle of the city.

Touches of pink bring a quiet femininit y to the living room.

ABOVE The big, plush sectional feels like a warm hug in the airy main living space. The top of the ottoman comes off to reveal storage. Windows throughout the home are outfitted with built-in blinds for privacy without putting a damper on the

natural light. In all of about three square feet, Kathleen created a “front hall” zone by installing a narrow divider wall, low-key cabinet and eye-catching mirror. “I knew I needed to create a little storage here with a landing area for

dropping keys, mail, etc., but also provide separation between this and the TV-living area,” Kathleen says.

“The wood slats keep it open, letting light come through, and the material ties in with the rest of the home’s finishes.”

Despite being right downtown, the condo gets amazing natural light.

Located in the outer corner of the main living space, this second sitting area has the feel of an aerie tucked away high above the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Riffing on the fact that it’s surrounded by windows and sweeping city views, Kathleen decorated it like a cozy, well-appointed veranda. The sofa, tables and side chairs all have a light, open design and are made of indoor-outdoor materials like wicker and worn wood. “They love to entertain, and sometimes the guys might be watching TV, so Mia wanted a separate area for lounging – but not necessarily a formal and informal space,” Kathleen says. “We knew we were doing the coffee bar here, so we extended that into a lounge area that’s laid out

to be conversational, with the chairs across from the daybed and lots of extra ottomans.” Installing a wooden eating counter at the window and running retro-style string lights across the ceiling brings a fun café feel to the sitting area.

A playful wooden swing hung from the ceiling reiterates the sitting area’s porch-like styling.

Since the condo was brand new, Kathleen’s directive was predominantly decorative. “When I first met with Mia, she said she wanted a Scandinavian look, but as I started seeing her inspiration pictures, I realized she wanted something more boho,” Kathleen says. “Condos can be really stark and lack warmth, so I worked on making the spaces organic and natural with a feminine, romantic flair – boho-driven, but in a polished way.” Kathleen cozied up the bright, open spaces with piles of pale wood. “With all the wood we brought in, I joke that it’s like a forest in here,” Kathleen says. Liberal hits of wicker and rattan, plus

nubby jute rugs, round out the quiet, textural palette.

Injecting style and personality was only half the battle. Because the home is open-concept and the look borders on minimalist, more storage was essential. “I came up with these clever, discreet solutions for storage,” Kathleen says, pointing out the master bedroom’s platform bedwindow seat installation, multi-purpose storage furniture and the petite front hall zone she created. Today, the charming home away from home lets the nomadic couple enjoy impressive views of their adopted city and a front row seat on Yaletown from an oasis of calm in the sky.

Delicate branches animate the space.

Large, enveloping woven barstools and a beverage fridge that faces the living and dining rooms turn the kitchen peninsula into a great spot for guests to hang out when Roberto or Mia are cooking.

Opting for a white marble backsplash and ďŹ nishing the upper cabinets in glossy white, as opposed to the darker oak lower cabinets, keeps the kitchen light and bright. Wrapping the peninsula that divides the kitchen and dining area in a seamless waterfall counter built of richly veined marble helped downplay its ample size.

Pairing cool ďŹ nishes (the marble and gleaming white laminate uppers) with warm oak cabinetry balances the tones in the kitchen. Drawers offer ease of access; as do the long, slim pulls that are understated and mod.

OPPOSITE LEFT All glitter, colour and talismanic intrigue, crystals live large in this condo’s decorating theme – from this charming mountain-themed display shelf in the master bedroom to the ensuite bath to the living room. Mia collects crystals, plus kitschy retrofitted Troll dolls with crystal hair. “Because the crystals are all different, small sizes, they would get lost on a larger shelf,” Kathleen says. “This mountainshaped shelf reflects Mia and Roberto’s love for nature, and its small cubbies nicely house some of Mia’s crystals.”

ABOVE Kathleen’s clever design for the master bedroom’s built-in unit, which incorporates the bed platform and headboard plus a window seat, was inspired by multi-purpose Japanese furniture. A lid on the bench seating opens to access a storage cubby, the foot of the bed holds a row of soft-closed drawers, and USB and electrical outlets are discreetly located on both sides of the headboard. “The master gets a lot of light, so I wanted to add depth with the deep

charcoal feature wall,” Kathleen says. “And I didn’t want the bed to blend in too much – I wanted something dramatic.”

Falling in Love AGAIN

T

he Group of Seven created iconic images of the Canadian landscape. Their paintings capture our vast and varied country in its many evocative forms.

So it’s never surprising to find pieces that capture their influence in Canadian homes.

In this enchanting interior, created for a Calgary family by designer Alanna Dunn, the understated palette creates a similar colour harmony and sense of wide-open space as does the stunning painting, reminiscent of a Group of Seven landscape, that hangs in the living room.

A whole-home reno – that, fair warning, started with “just the kitchen” – transforms how a Calgary family lives in and feels about their home.

LEFT The petite front hall is packed with style and storage. Interior designer Alanna Dunn complemented two existing cupboards — refinished with luxe white macaubus quartzite tops, a coat of serene grey paint and chunky brass handles — with a new “locker” that’s divided inside with hooks and cubbies for all of 10-year-old Blake’s gear. “The locker is so smart!” homeowner Leanne Todd says. “It looks so beautiful, and it’s filled with Blake’s school bag, swimming bag and soccer bags. She lives for sports, so it’s amazing to have space that organizes her life. And it’s all ready to go, so we’re not hunting for missing things.” The low cupboard doubles as a bench. A square of herringbone-laid slate tiles is a rugged option inside the front door. “We’re in Calgary, so we’ve got melting snow and wet shoes, and this is a really durable surface,” says Alanna. Shiplap, installed up the stair wall when dated faux stone was ripped out, injects texture and depth.

The open-backed chaise adds seating without hampering sightlines in the open-concept space. “I focused on creating a living room seating arrangement that’s inclusive of what’s happening in the kitchen,” she says.

ALANNA UPDATED THE LOOK OF THE EXISTING CABINETRY BY REFINISHING THE DOORS IN A VELVETY “warm greige” AND OUTFITTING THEM WITH LONG, luxe brass handles.

Alanna built the home’s quiet backdrop with a palette of cool neutrals the colours of stone, sand and sky. The white walls – some panelled in shiplap for low-key textural interest – seem to riff on the breezy hue of the painting’s billowy white clouds, while the soft grey of the restyled and refinished kitchen cabinetry echoes the clouds’ shadowy underbellies. Judicious pops of blue and yellow remind you of the canvas’s sky and lake, and of the sunlight seeping through the clouds at the horizon. And, as in nature, a few hits of inky black anchor the spaces and give the eye a place to rest.

While the aesthetic sounds perfectly planned – and the results appear effortless – the process was anything but straightforward. “It was the ultimate snowball project,” says Alanna. “Leanne reached out originally for help with a renovation of their kitchen, which had outdated maple cabinets, granite counters and this slate tile floor that was very bossy. They were looking to give it a facelift to hold them over for a couple of years until they moved.

Over the next 18 months, we proceeded to basically renovate their entire 1,950-square-foot house.”

While the dining room features the owners’ existing trestle table, bench and graceful white Windsor chairs, it looks thoroughly different thanks to the new pale wood flooring and a modern chandelier. Throughout the main floor, new engineered white oak flooring replaced a mix of outdated orange slate and carpet. “It gives the rooms more cohesive flow and visually opens them up to one another, creating the illusion of larger spaces,” Alanna says.

She had sheer white studio blinds installed all across the back wall of the house to add privacy without putting a damper on the ample natural light.

Leanne and Scott Todd, who live here with their daughter, Blake, built the house 15 years ago. “At the time, we loved a ‘Canmore mountain’ style, with dark walls and slate floors,” says Leanne, a vice president of a software company. “But over the years, we found it too dark, and we found we didn’t have enough storage. We never seemed to spend time in the living room, and when we entertained, it felt like the island’s high breakfast bar cut off guests from the cook.” Nonetheless, there were things to appreciate about the house, too. “The bones and layout were working really well for them,” Alanna says. That’s always good news when it comes to budgeting.

Part of making the kitchen work harder for the family – especially since so much of the space is open-concept – was building in additional storage to hide away all the odds and ends of daily life. So before overhauling the kitchen’s aesthetic, Alanna redesigned a second full wall of cabinetry, rebuilt the island to pack in designated functions (from the dishwasher to the garbage-recycling bins to a pull-out shelf for the dog food bowls) and installed a cupboard to hide away the TV – this is, after all, their entertaining space as well. “All the visual clutter now has a home,” Leanne says. “I see us actually taking greater care to keep things organized, which is amazing, too!”

Finally, the kitchen cabinets – old and new – were washed in pale grey paint and fitted with crisp quartzite counters, a glittery new backsplash was installed, and the appliances were upgraded. To keep costs down, Leanne and Scott did the general contracting themselves, which enabled them to allocate that budget to interior design and acquiring a few new key pieces.

Once the kitchen was redone, Leanne and Scott took the plunge on further renovations. “We changed the flooring to pale engineered white oak throughout the main floor,” Alanna explains.

“It’s much lighter than the old floor and it helps blur the lines where one room ends and the next begins.” Tweaks to the front hall, laundry room and powder room followed, as did redesigns for the private spaces on the second floor.

Alanna expanded the kitchen’s cabinetry layout on both sides, rebuilt the island and then overhauled all the finishes in the space.

“The island used to have a barheight counter on one side. We smoothed that out so the kitchen and living room feel more openconcept. The old island was also quite angled, so we cleaned up its lines, then maximized the storage like crazy,” Alanna says. “Leanne really wanted to reduce visual clutter in her kitchen, so we fit the dishwasher, a cabinet for cleaning supplies, the compost-recyclinggarbage pull-out, and little drawers for the dog food bowls and kibble storage into the island.”

Then, dark granite counters were

replaced by white macaubus quartzite, which looks like marble but is more stain-resistant. The cabinets were refinished in the palest grey, and the backsplash, floor, hardware, plumbing, appliances and range hood were all updated. Handsome new backless stools look polished but discreet. Alanna updated the look of the existing cabinetry on the kitchen’s rear wall by refinishing the doors in a velvety “warm greige” and outfitting them with long, luxe brass handles. The rebuilt island incorporates a pullout dining shelf for Molly, the family’s pocket beagle, plus storage bins for her kibble. On the rear wall, the shallow upper cabinet

hides the main floor’s only TV. “When open, the doors slide back into the cabinet so they’re fully out of the way,” Alanna says.

The new cabinet also houses cookbooks, plus storage for “all the miscellaneous kitchen junkdrawer things you don’t really know where to put!”

ABOVE A huge cushioned ottoman is a great choice for the smallish living room; it can work for family games nights, hold drinks and appetizers during a party, or seat extra bodies at a get-together. “We wanted as much seating and lounge space as possible,” Alanna says. “They can pull the ottoman up to the sofa for more of a chaise arrangement or use it as a coffee table with a big tray on it.” A rugged squared-off timber used as the mantel is a thematic echo of the dramatic landscape that inspired the art wall, and a cozy Beni Ourain rug defines the seating area within the open-concept space.

RIGHT The focal point of the bright, newly decorated living room is a dramatic gallery wall that lets Leanne display her beloved collection. “It’s an eclectic mix that’s colourful and youthful, like Leanne’s family, but still very stylish,” Alanna says. For durability and a hint of texture, she refinished the gallery wall in shiplap. Leanne couldn’t be happier with the results: “With the kitchen so neutral, we could do a more creative space in the living room – the yin and yang of the design.

And it’s so inviting and interesting now. The colours are light and serene, with pops of colour in the art and greenery to make the room feel happy,” she says.

Leanne was thoroughly surprised by the results. “You can take a very standard, builder-grade house, and without really changing any layouts – just using design, colour and care – you can make it so much more modern and interesting, and turn it into something you’re very proud of,” she says. “This was not my dream house, and I didn’t think I could love this space. I was wrong!” Leanne says it ended up the family didn’t need a bigger home, just one that was brighter and “more alive.”

She admits that the redesign has actually changed how she, Scott and Blake use their home. “Honestly, we never used to use the fireplace or really the living room, except for guests. And every day, we’re in there together now. The rooms are really lived in – I never expected that!”

Like an iconic work of art, it seems a great design can transcend time and place, and change the way we see things.

ABOVE Rendered in an unexpected blue and silver palette, the powder room’s graphic pineapple wallpaper reads as playful and elegant. “In renovating the kitchen, living room and entry, we established a reoccurring blue accent colour, and I thought it would be fun to pick up on that in a whimsical way here,” Alanna says. “A powder room is a great opportunity to do something quirky and slightly different from the aesthetic of the rest of a home.” Because the room is so tiny, Alanna chose an open-based vanity to show off as much wallpaper as possible.

OPPOSITE The previous bedroom layout had an awkward angled wall along one side. “I designed a wall of millwork to fill the space created by this wall and create a more symmetrical and streamlined space,” says Alanna. “Compared to the rest of the home, we decided to stick with a more monochromatic palette but maintained graphic elements to keep up with the rest of the home.” Warm grey wool carpeting softens the high contrast black and white elements.

Go green During the update of the kitchen, Ashley had the formerly grey cabinets spray-painted a dark, soothing sage green. A fresh coat of white on the range hood and a new white brick veneer backsplash brightens the room. Ashley opted to keep the original countertops, including the slate top at the island, but she built out the island base to add seating and storage. “For warmth, we wanted a modern chandelier of glass with warm brass accents that would tie in with the rugged leather bar stools.”

“M

ost of us think of green as a colour and brown as a neutral, and we stop right there,” says designer Ashley Montgomery.

But what if we looked at our home’s palettes in a new way?

What if we embraced rich hues and paired them with metals and leather to create a fresh new take on neutrality? One look at the dark olive green sofa and deep sage green kitchen cabinetry in this Toronto home, and the answer is clear – the look is as bold as it is timeless.

Yet this three-bedroom house is more than a design statement. It’s also ultra-functional. “A home is meant to be lived in. The goal should be beautiful items that can stand up to being used,” says Ashley. The homeowners, Brad and Jen, have two sons, Rowan and Carson, aged 9 and 12.

“So we created this whole basement lounge area just for them, and made the most of easy-clean performance fabrics down there,” says Ashley.

“Meanwhile, upstairs, we splurged on mid-century vintage furnishings and rugs that will someday be family heirlooms.”

When the family purchased the home, they chose to redecorate but not renovate the original bathrooms and kitchen to save money. “That didn’t stop us from updating the existing cabinetry in the kitchen,” says Ashley. Formerly grey, she elevated the kitchen to a deep, yet soft sage green, and expanded a tight little island into a family-friendly seating area. “Even something as simple as adding a vintage credenza to an otherwise busy entryway can completely transform your home. Look around at what you have, and ask, what’s one small change I could make?” says Ashley. “Small changes really add up.”

Timeless touches The worn surfaces of vintage cutting boards and ceramics bring a sense of history to the kitchen, as does the home’s 1900s leaded-glass window and a gold-framed still life.

Linear slatted armchairs contrast with the soft curves of a new neutral olive-green leather sofa. “To define the fireplace we painted it white, then added shiny brass sconces, vintage ceramics and a mirror passed down from the homeowner’s grandmother,” says Ashley.

On the bright side The sunroom is a favourite place for morning coffee. The sofa has the luxe look of linen but is actually covered in a durable outdoor upholstery fabric that resists staining and fading. Warm wood and a woven rug pair with the grey ottoman and pillows for a space that’s all about soaking in the sunlight. The drum shade and Roman shades “disappear,” keeping the room airy.

Cold to warm The master bathroom, which had high contrast floor tiles and lots of hard, white surfaces, was not renovated. To soften the space, Ashley introduced natural materials, such as the woven hamper and wooden “reading board” across the tub. The weave of the Turkish towels picks up on the palette of the tile but adds a gentler, textural element.

2 stalks lemongrass 3 tbsp turmeric powder 4 tbsp coarse sea salt (divided) 1¼ tsp white pepper (divided) ¼ cup granulated sugar 2 tsp coriander seeds ½ tsp cumin seeds ½ cup coconut cream 4–6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs

To make the marinade, using a mortar and pestle, pound the lemongrass, turmeric powder, 3 tablespoons salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, sugar, coriander seeds and cumin seeds into a fine paste. Stir in the coconut cream. Check seasoning and adjust if necessary.

Dice the chicken thighs into ¾-inch cubes.

Season with 1 tablespoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Transfer the chicken cubes to a bowl.

Add the marinade and toss well until evenly coated. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Prepare a charcoal grill to medium heat 25 to 40 minutes prior to grilling (both a gas grill or grill pan on the stove at medium-high heat also work but are not preferred). Spread out the charcoal to achieve an even heat.

Once ready to cook, skewer the chicken evenly onto the presoaked bamboo skewers.

Grill the chicken skewers until they pick up a nice char on all sides and are cooked through, about 3 to 4 minutes per skewer depending on the thickness of your chicken. Garnish with coriander leaves if desired. Serve with cucumber relish and peanut sauce.

FRIED CHICKEN WINGS WITH NAHM JIM JIAO

SERVES 4

4 quarts canola oil 12 chicken wings 2 tsp coarse sea salt, plus extra to taste Pinch of white pepper 1 cup cornstarch 1½ cups water ½ tsp granulated sugar ½ tsp toasted chili powder 1 tbsp finely sliced pak chi farang, to garnish In a heavy 4- to 6-quart pot over medium-high heat, preheat the oil to 350°F. Season the chicken wings with a pinch of salt and pepper. In a bowl, whisk the cornstarch and water together until they form a slurry resembling homogenized milk.

Dip each wing in the slurry until evenly coated and gently lower into the pot, one by one.

Fry for 7 minutes, until the wings are golden brown and crispy. Using a spider, remove them from the oil and transfer to a rack lined with paper towel to absorb excess oil.

Season with the remaining salt and the sugar and toasted chili powder. Garnish with pak chi farang and serve with nahm jim jiao for dipping.

NAHM JIM JIAO MAKES 1½ CUPS

½ cup tamarind water

For the Pad Thai Sauce In a medium-size pot, whisk the tamarind water, sugar, fish sauce, water and pandan leaf together and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Ensure the sugar is melted and not burned to the bottom of the pot. Continue to simmer for 5 minutes more, then remove from heat to cool. This dish will require ½ cup pad thai sauce; you can store any remaining sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

For the Pad Thai Preheat a wok over medium heat, then add the peanut oil and stir-fry the shallot and tofu together for about 30 seconds, until caramelized but not too dark. Add the radish and prawns, and continue stir-frying for another 15 seconds. Stir in the egg until it has coagulated, then add the noodles. Toast the noodles until they turn white, about 15 seconds. Do not let them burn.

Add 1 cup of water, toasted chili powder, and fish sauce. Toss the noodles to coat them, then turn down the heat to medium and allow the noodles to absorb the liquid for 3 to 5 minutes. The noodles should be pliable and slightly chewy but not firm. Pour ½ cup of the pad thai sauce over the noodles, turn the heat up to high, toss together to coat the noodles evenly, and allow the syrup to reduce and caramelize. Your pad thai should be darker in colour, have a slightly nutty aroma and, texturally, should be pliable but not mushy.

Stir in the bean sprouts and Chinese chives.

Transfer the pad thai to a serving platter. Garnish with more bean sprouts, Chinese chives, crushed peanuts and lime wedges.

FOOD STIR-FRIED SIDESTRIPE PRAWNS WITH FENNEL SALAD SERVES 4

1 pound frozen sidestripe prawns 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 8–12 cups canola or peanut oil 1 cup cornstarch 2 cups water 1 tbsp plus 2 tsp coarse sea salt (divided) 1½ tsp plus pinch of black pepper (divided) 1 small- to medium-size bulb organic fennel 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice ½ cup eight-spice sauce ¼ cup fried Thai baby garlic or garlic cloves Thaw the frozen prawns by running cold water over them.

In a deep fryer or a 6- to 8-quart Dutch oven over medium-high heat, preheat the oil to 350°F. In a large mixing bowl, use a whisk or your hands to mix together the cornstarch, water, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper for the slurry. The slurry should be the consistency of thick cream so that it coats the prawn shells evenly.

Prepare a bowl of ice water. Slice the fennel bulb in half, keeping the fronds for garnish.

Using a Japanese mandoline, slice the fennel paper-thin and place in the water.

Rewhisk the cornstarch slurry to recombine the settlements, and coat the prawns with the slurry. Fry the prawns in batches for 2 to 3 minutes per batch, until they are light and crispy. Remove the prawns from the oil and transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to absorb excess oil.

In a medium-size mixing bowl, toss sliced fennel with 2 tablespoons olive oil, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper.

Preheat a wok over medium-high heat and stir-fry the fried prawns together with the eight-spice sauce, remaining 1 teaspoon salt, pinch of pepper, and fried garlic. Transfer to a bowl and serve with the dressed fennel and fennel fronds on top.

PRAWN CAKE EIGHT-SPICE SAUCE

PRAWN CAKE SERVES 4

1 cup caramelized tamarind sauce 1 tbsp peeled and fried lemongrass 1 tbsp fried green peppercorns 1 tbsp fried dried red Thai bird’s eye chilies 1 tbsp fried galangal 1 tbsp fried shallots 1 tbsp fried garlic 10 makrut lime leaves, halved lengthwise and fried In a wok or skillet over medium heat, bring the caramelized tamarind sauce to a simmer.

Add the rest of the ingredients and toss to combine, then bring to a rolling simmer. Once it reaches a simmer, remove from the heat and set aside. Can be used in fish or meat stir-fry.

4 quarts canola oil 1 garlic clove 1 red Thai bird’s eye chili Pinch of coarse sea salt 1 pound hand-minced prawn meat ½ cup diced long beans 2 tbsp julienned makrut lime leaves 2 tbsp fish sauce ½ tsp white pepper ½ tsp granulated sugar ¼ cup sweet chili sauce, for serving In a deep fryer or large heavy pot over medium-high heat, preheat the canola oil to 350°F. Using a mortar and pestle, pound the garlic, chili and salt into a fine paste. Transfer the paste to a medium-size bowl together with the rest of the ingredients (excluding the sweet chili sauce). Using your hands, combine the ingredients thoroughly, then slap the mixture against the bowl until firm and sticky.

Form the mixture into 16 to 20 balls, 1 to 1½ inches in diameter, or into 10 to 12 patties up to 2 inches wide and no more than 1 inch thick. Test-fry one prawn cake in the fryer or pot, cooking it for about 2 minutes, until golden brown. The texture should be bouncy and lightly toothy. Depending on the size of your pot, fry them in one or two batches, then transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to drain any excess oil.

Serve with sweet chili sauce.
