WELCOME With the cold nights and dark mornings subsiding, spring is such a welcome season. As well as bringing some muchneeded sunshine and gorgeous cherry blossom to the trees, it’s also when the new interiors collections land, where you’ll find soft, sugary shades of pale blue and blush pink, through to bold, standout hues of burnt orange and mustard. Art Deco-inspired shapes and natural materials feature on furniture and accessories; plus, botanical prints and modern global motifs will give your rooms a pop of personality. I’m still working my way through my new-year house updates, but after seeing architect Lydia Robinson’s stunning renovation on p44, I have the urge to start my own project – just don’t tell my husband! For even more inspiration, make sure to visit our unique Good Homes roomsets at this month’s Ideal Home Show at Olympia London (27 March-13 April) with your free ticket on p100. See you there…

oving to the Cotswolds from Bristol, Lydia Robinson and her husband Lawrence wanted a project they could get their teeth into. ‘One of the reasons we moved here was to be nearer to my horse, Mandela, but we also love the local countryside, and fancied a change,’ explains Lydia. ‘Our design practice is based in Cheltenham, so the Cotswolds is also an easy commute.’ Having spotted a well-built two-bedroom property at an estate agent online, the couple knew it had enormous potential. ‘he house was sat in the middle of a quarter-of-an-acre plot on a corner, and we could see that we would be able to make huge improvements,’ recalls Lydia. ‘It had

been decorated in a typical country style, with carpet and loral fabrics, which wasn’t very ‘us’, but the basic structure was sound.’ Lydia and Lawrence were keen to make more of the property’s roots in the Arts and Crafts movement. ‘Although people think more about the twenties and thirties when they think of Arts and Crafts, it did continue into the ifties, particularly in the Cotswolds and more country areas. But simple design and robust construction are very much part of it, and we’ve kept touches such as the terracotta tiles on the windowsills, which we extended into the ireplace with reproduction tiles.’ he couple applied for planning permission for three extensions, the main one being a large single-storey addition on the ground loor

to replace a garage and provide an open-plan kitchen/dining/living space. ‘he garden of the original house was on the wrong side, so couldn’t make the most of the sun, and the side where the garage was faces south west, so gets the views as well as the light,’ Lydia explains. ‘We’ve also added a two-storey extension on the other side to create a car port, with two new bedrooms and bathrooms above. he third extension provides a proper porch and hallway.’ With planning permission going through in November 2016, the nine-month build was completed by November the following year. ‘here was no way we could live there while the building work was going on,’ recalls Lydia. ‘As we were basically extending out on three sides, we spent the irst few weeks there to make sure the builders knew exactly what was needed, and then we had to rent something locally.’ he kitchen space has turned out to be the couple’s favourite part of the build. ‘It’s the standout room,’ Lydia says. ‘It’s triple aspect and MARCH 2020 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 49

For me it all needs to be in harmony.’ he looring was also a major consideration, and the couple chose ash looring from Kahrs downstairs and in the new extension. ‘You tend to think of oak when thinking of the Cotswolds, but it’s actually ash that is the predominant species, and we wanted to stay true to that,’ says Lydia. ‘Upstairs it’s all cork looring, which is warm underfoot, easy to care for and simple to lay.’ Ash was also used for all the doors and to highlight the steel lintels needed to create the open-plan layout.

When it came to the style of the interiors, Lydia and Lawrence took their time to make sure everything they bought was just right. ‘We are living in a very manufactured, digital age, so we felt it was important to have objects in our home that have permanence, with a bit of age and patina,’ says Lydia. ‘I think it’s lovely to go to people’s homes and see their personality and history on show, whether it’s an old heirloom armchair or a childhood doll – all these objects can add character, authenticity and originality.’ Supporting other local businesses in the Cotswolds is also close to the couple’s hearts, and they like to shop throughout the region as well as in Cheltenham, where their studio is based. ‘L’una Design in the town supplied the kitchen and larger items of furniture,’ says Lydia. ‘Smaller pieces and accessories were picked up in nearby Nordic-style shops, as we wanted the schemes to have a Mid-century Scandinavian feel.’ With the house now inished, Lydia is happy to impart some advice. ‘If you have a 1950s house, celebrate it – don’t pretend it’s a cottage,’ she says. ‘Reference its age by including as many of the original features as possible.’ But there’s no stopping the couple’s itchy feet. ‘We’ve seen an old barn a few miles away that needs underpinning, so we’re very tempted to do it all again.’ 54 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2020

hen Lesley McNamee and husband Trevor began the search for their next home, they were, without a doubt, looking for a period property. With her own online shop, Retropolitan, selling vintage pieces and antiques, Lesley wanted an appropriate house to showcase her own collections. ‘We mainly have Mid-century furniture and homewares, but there’s a mix with other eras, so it was important we found a house with its original features intact,’ she explains. ‘My business is about making vintage accessible to everyone, and I live by that too. Nothing in our home has cost more than a few hundred pounds.’ Lesley and Trevor lived in west London before moving to Brighton in 2012, on the recommendation of friends, renting

and there was an old steel boiler downstairs that heated the whole house,’ recalls Lesley. ‘I loved the original ireplaces and all the architraves, but it wasn’t until we walked through the door that we realised the house actually had all the space we needed.’ Like many Victorian terraces, Lesley and Trevor’s three-storey home is deep rather than wide – and felt rather closed-in. relayed their ideas to an architectural technician who did drawings for the builders. he changes involved removing the wall between the dining room and front room to make a much larger living room, and creating a big kitchen by knocking through the pantry and rebuilding the 1980s extension. Upstairs was a similar story, knocking two awkward bedrooms together and pinching a bit of space to add a shower to the main bathroom. ‘Our front bedroom was so big we were able to create an en suite in there,’ Lesley adds. ‘We also put in a proper staircase to the loft as there had only been a ladder there before – and now this is Trevor’s DJ room.’ Work got underway soon after Lesley and Trevor bought the house in May 2013, with their builder friends Pierre and Eddie running the job. ‘Trevor and I had never done a project like this before, so they were brilliant,’ says Lesley. ‘he inishes are fantastic.’

he whole house was stripped back to the bones to make way for new electrics and plumbing, and the team zipped through the work; however, a stumbling block arose when the stairs to the loft went in. ‘We had a structural engineer do the drawings for a proper staircase,’ recalls Lesley. ‘But it didn’t go quite to plan, as the stairs had to come in and out a couple of times until they were itted correctly.’ Within six months, Lesley and Trevor’s house was ready for them to move into, but it took another year before it started to
feel like home. ‘We didn’t want to think about anything “house” for a while!’ says Lesley. ‘We gradually bought key bits of furniture and worked out where to hang pictures and display our pieces.’ Most of the couple’s furniture is original – with the odd modern-day collectible thrown in, like the Heal’s dining table and sideboard in the kitchen. The tasselled wool throw, a vintage kilim from the 1960s, is one of Lesley’s favourite pieces. ‘I found it hidden away in a side-street shop in Turkey,’ she says. The original painting is from the Brighton Marina Boot Fair, as is the colourful Italian 1960s lamp
Belgium, such as Jeu de Balle and Zandfeesten. ‘Over the years, I have a few regrets about some of the pieces I’ve owned and then sold,’ admits Lesley. ‘Now when I do a big buy, I keep a couple of key pieces back for myself.’ Lesley is an avid collector of vintage tins, fabrics, books and ceramics, as well as being an expert in antique and vintage glassware, so surfaces of any kind in her home have formed an important framework to each room for displaying these collectibles. ‘I’m really drawn to colour and texture,’ she explains. ‘I’m a big fan of vintage West German pottery. Post-war living encouraged amazing design and innovation to homewares made during this time.’ 68 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2020
Rugs, pictures and lighting are all vintage too, and some are bargains Lesley’s found on eBay – like the steel machine lamps in the kitchen that came from an old factory. ‘hey were perfect for starting the industrial look of the kitchen and only cost £90 each,’ she says. Now inished, Lesley’s very happy with her home – and the basement is full of furniture and accessories for her online shop, which she also uses to swap around in the house if she fancies a change. ‘In this business, it’s all about your eye and how you curate your collections,’ Lesley explains. ‘I only ever buy pieces I’d have in my own home, which can be a nightmare sometimes because I can’t decide what to keep and what to sell!’

After moving in with their family in 2016, the couple were eager to make major changes to rationalise the rooms and create more open-plan kitchen, dining and living spaces. ‘he whole layout was jumbled, as the previous owner had built a strange extension made from railway sleepers that was used as a ground-loor bedroom,’ explains Emily. ‘We spoke to a builder, who told us we really needed to bring an architect on board before starting any work.’ So the couple were put in touch with Henri Bredenkamp of Studio 30 Architects, who specialises in extending and remodelling existing 74 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2020

overlooks the Five Sisters of Kintail and the Kylerhea Straits, the bungalow was being sold with two acres of land, and Michelle and Barry were instantly smitten. Built in 2007, the rudimentary property was in a poor state of repair for its age, and everything seemed half-inished. Only the ground loor of the dormer bungalow was habitable and contained a warren of small rooms. ‘It was quite a basic structure, and although the loft was boarded out there was no staircase – just a small kitchen, a living room, a tiny bedroom and a huge bathroom on the ground loor,’ says Michelle. he couple contacted local architects to discuss how best to remodel and extend the property, choosing Tansy Grigor-Taylor to create a modern yet sympathetic design, inspired by the nearby farm buildings, to sit comfortably within the croft. he exterior of the building mirrors the black-clad structures found throughout Skye, and a simple palette of materials was chosen, including wood and tin. ‘We didn’t extend the original footprint because we hoped to work with the existing space as far as possible,’ explains Michelle. ‘here was already planning permission in place to convert the loft into three bedrooms and a shower room but we didn’t think the space allowed for this, so submitted our own plans for two larger bedrooms instead.’ 92 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2020

to make the most of the view, the builders then installed new looring, insulation, plasterboard, heating, doors and windows. ‘he low point, however, was when – having waited 15 weeks for delivery of the patio doors – we were told they’d been damaged leaving the factory, which held up the whole project,’ Michelle recalls. Externally, the old grey cement render was covered with vertical black-stained larch cladding on battens, and the house is now surrounded by wrap-around decking, creating an ideal vantage point from which to admire the scenery. ‘he main roof was actually in good condition, so we decided to leave this,’ says Michelle.

Veranda A fumed-oak porch swing – Michelle’s favourite piece – was imported from Old North Designs in Tennessee to stand on the newly built side veranda, with its red corrugated roof and outdoor dining area ‘A red tin roof covers the new veranda built onto the side of the house, to contrast with the black wood cladding. he weather in Skye can be changeable, so having a covered outdoor area made sense.’ Michelle likes Danish-inspired design, which was her starting point for the simple, pared-back interiors. A partial internal wall, with an inset woodburner, was built between the kitchen and living areas, and the open-plan kitchen and dining space includes a relaxing seating area beside a corner window. ‘I worked with Out of Wood in their Truro workshop to design our handmade, solid-oak kitchen,’ Michelle explains. ‘It’s been inished with a wash
of dark inky blue, which is almost black, and the joiner made and tested various stains to achieve the right colour so that the grain of the wood still shows through.’ With the building work completed in May 2019, the family were able to visit for their irst holiday in the house – taking beach walks and travelling across to the mainland on the nearby ferry. ‘I love nothing better than sitting out on the veranda in the evening, wrapped in a blanket on the porch swing, listening to the sound of the mountain stream that runs past our house,’ says Michelle. ‘It really is the perfect spot to read or star-gaze, and we feel extremely lucky to own such a peaceful retreat.’ MARCH 2020 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 97

5 STYLE RULES 1. Go verdant Green is your go-to colour here, so choose a sofa in a dark shade to offset a white backdrop. Accessorise with tones of soft sage, jade and eucalyptus to warmer ferns and forest green.
GREEN & SERENE Create a restful, chilled-out living space with calming colours, soothing tones and plenty of plants
2. Relax
Keep the mood laidback and tranquil with a pale, neutral background. Choose colours in soft, barely-there shades and matt, chalky finishes that are easy on the eye.
3. Be brave
Use heavily-patterned wallpaper to uplift a harmonious scheme, whether it's on all four walls or just as a focal point. Offset with layered soft furnishings in relaxed linens, soft weaves and plenty of leafy prints.
4. Add texture
Avoid gloss and polish when it comes to furniture and accessories, and opt for finishes such as sisal and woven basketware, contrasted with concrete.
5. Energise
Plants and greenery aid wellbeing and create a restful scheme. Work in on shelves, in planters and with terrariums.

WHY DID YOU DISLIKE YOUR OLD KITCHEN? When we looked at the house it had four small rooms at the back: a tiny kitchen with no sink, utility room, study, and outdoor WC and coal store. It had belonged to the previous owner’s family since it was built in the 1900s and hadn’t been modernised. HOW DID YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE SPACE? We decided to keep the utility, as we knew it would be useful, but knock down the other walls to create a large open-plan kitchen-diner. We felt adding a long narrow extension along the width would create a better-proportioned space, plus we were keen to connect the house to the garden, with a run of glazing. The extension also allowed us to include some roof lights above to let even more light into the room. WHAT WERE YOUR MUST-HAVES? day we could open them up. It wasn’t the cheapest option but we felt wood frames might be less stable and uPVC wouldn’t have matched the age of the house. I’ve worked with Waverley Kitchens many times before so we asked them to help. I love their aesthetic: they make bespoke plywood cabinetry at reasonable prices – perfect for the contemporary yet homely look we wanted. DID YOU HAVE A PROJECT BUDGET IN MIND? Yes – we put aside £40,000 for the extension and kitchen renovation, and were willing to spend that much as the room was going to be the hub of the whole house.
WERE THERE ANY DISASTERS ALONG THE WAY? No – probably because we are both architects so are very experienced at project management. We had submitted the plans for council approval before we even moved in! And, conveniently, my uncle is a builder and my dad a retired builder, so together we were able to overcome any challenges pretty easily. WHAT WAS THE BEST BARGAIN YOU FOUND? The light fittings were a real find. Scott was very particular about this important, but often overlooked, element of successful interior design. He found the distinctive zingy citrus pendants and matching wall light for less than £20 each. We also picked up the green retro-style bar stools for a great price on eBay. SOCIABLE DINING The kitchen’s style is echoed in the extendable table and bespoke display shelving
DESIGN WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT COST MORE THAN YOU EXPECTED? At £59 per square metre, the flooring was a little more than we’d allowed for. I was inspired by the look of Moroccan tiles, but was concerned they could feel cold and hard underfoot. Then I discovered this beautiful patterned sheet vinyl flooring – it was just what I was looking for.
to cope living in a building site with a young family was the biggest lesson though!
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED? As an architect I am learning all the time: new products and materials are coming out constantly, so there is a lot to keep up with. We had to extend and update the heating system for this project, which was trickier than I had expected. Maybe learning how
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE RESULT? We love it. Scott and I are both keen cooks and our kitchen has become the centre of everything. The children do their homework here and our daughter loves painting and drawing at the desk. It is open to the garden and we’re enjoying working on that, too.
DID YOU STICK TO YOUR BUDGET? We did our best, but tried not to scrimp either. It did run over a little, however, and in the end we didn’t have quite enough funds for the log burner we had planned to put in. That will have to wait a little while now.

CONTEMPORARY COUNTRY
‘I CALL IT REFINED
SHAKER STYLE’
Jessica Barkley has given a traditional farmhouse scheme an elegant modern twist Feature JO MESSENGER Photographer PAUL CRAIG
WHY DID YOU DISLIKE YOUR OLD KITCHEN? When we bought the house back in 2017, we stripped everything back to the bare brick and knocked down walls to create the family home we had always pictured. The original kitchen was essentially non-existent – literally an old sink unit and a worktop. The walls were damp and painted pink, and the room lacked any practicality. WHAT WERE YOUR PROJECT PLANS? We designed a double-storey extension to include a new open-plan kitchen and dining space, as well as a separate utility room and downstairs toilet. The house is in a rural location – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – so we wanted to give it a farmhouse look, but with a modern feel and neutral colours. Some friends recommended LDC Kitchens in Worcester, and after visiting the showroom we chose a light grey Shaker-style design by Masterclass, which was exactly the refined, elegant look we were aiming for. 118 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM MARCH 2020

GREY SHADES Upholstered button-back bar chairs provide a comfortable place to sit for casual dining at the island
WERE THERE ANY MUST-HAVE FEATURES ON YOUR LIST? Bi-fold doors, so we could have easy access into the back garden, and a big sociable island were definitely at the top. I also felt that including a traditional plate rack, brass handles and a tap would add to the stylish country look I wanted. The downdraft extractor fan that rises out of the island has become quite a talking point, too – our guests always think it’s a high-tech sound bar! DID YOU MANAGE TO STAY WITHIN BUDGET? Yes, we had set aside £20,000 for the kitchen after the build and were able to include the utility room in that as well. To keep costs down we chose a laminate surface for the utility room and didn’t include all the appliances, like a big American-style fridge-freezer, coffee machine and plate warmer, that we had originally planned. WAS ANYTHING MORE EXPENSIVE THAN YOU EXPECTED? Nothing in particular, but cutting back on the appliances definitely helped us stay on track. I think it is these high-tech extras that can cause costs to really start adding up if you’re not careful!
TIMELESS CLASSICS A traditional butler sink has been paired with a brushed brass mixer to echo the knobs and handles that give pops of metallic sheen

BRIGHT IDEA The grey colour palette continues into the dining area, with a wooden table and bench adding warmer tones. Patio doors and a pair of roof lights above ensure the open-plan space is also bathed in natural light
ST YLE
Ti p WERE THERE ANY LESSONS LEARNED? Luckily, the whole project ran very smoothly, but I do wish I had listened to our kitchen designer’s advice and gone for darker units. I was dead against it on plan, but now we are actually in the space there is so much natural light that I think the space might have felt a little cosier if we’d gone for a deeper shade.
HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW THAT ALL THE WORK IS FINISHED? Relieved! It’s finally time to enjoy the house we’ve been working on for two years. The kitchen is such a sociable space that we barely use the living room when friends are round. Everyone gathers around the island with a glass of wine, while I cook – I love it.

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOUR OLD BATHROOM? When we moved in, the family bathroom on the irst loor was a decent size and even though it had its own loo, there was a small separate toilet next door that was rarely used. It also felt old fashioned and a bit frumpy, so was ready for a refresh. DID YOU HAVE ANY BIG IDEAS FOR THE NEW DESIGN? I knew knocking the two rooms into one large space would give me the scope to try something more daring, and I wanted to create a dramatic scheme with tiles that had a luid appearance – like running water across the loor. I chose a smart and simple black and white scheme, and mixed it up with some industrial styling. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED? I shopped around for the best prices and got most things from VictoriaPlum.com; my lovely bath, for example,
was under £400, and the wall lights were another bargain from Amazon. I did have to order some extra tiles, however, as although I had factored in the additional 10 per cent for wastage, the tiler needed at least 25 per cent more to allow for cutting due to their shape.

T
imber windows add original character and heritage charm to a period property, but they also require some maintenance to combat common problems such as draughts, rattles, rot and heat loss. With over 35 years’ experience, Ventrolla is the expert in repairing, draught-proofing and double-glazing timber windows, and can clarify the three main areas to think about when considering a window renovation project: condition, repair, and planning rules. Are your existing windows draughty? Have you noticed rot? Do they rattle in the wind and let the rain in? Or are they stiff to operate or painted shut? Having a clear idea of the main issues with your windows’ condition will help you find the right solution for your home. Before considering replacement, it is worth noting that despite extensive deterioration, many original timber windows can still be repaired. However, complete new bespoke timber windows can be made to replace those that are truly beyond repair – or where your preference is to buy brand new.
Period beauty Step into spring by refreshing and restoring your timber windows with Ventrolla’s renovation service With regard to planning laws or rules to take into account, if your home is in a Conservation Area, or a listed building, then there will be restrictions on what you can do with any original timber windows. Speaking with your local planning department will help to clarify what you can and cannot do before you proceed with a project. Ventrolla offers a free survey and quotation, with local teams across the UK on hand to help and offer advice. For a limited time, Good Homes readers can claim a 5 per cent discount plus a free standard hardware pack (worth more than £30) for every timber window renovated; see below, quoting code HOMES20.

after a short time, as the costs were spiralling, and brought in another irm, AMJ Renovations, to complete the work. hey couldn’t start for six months, so we had to lock up, store the materials and wait. Incredibly, the second builder stuck to the budget and worked with a joiner, who did a beautiful job of the panelling.
Why did you want to extend? I grew up holidaying in Dartmouth, and we’d been looking to buy a property there that we could also rent out. When we found this 400-year-old cottage in 2018, it had no original features and hadn’t been touched for 20 years, but its setting on a lane near a Dartmouth village was idyllic, and the garden has panoramic views of rolling countryside. We didn’t want to make drastic structural changes but felt a glass extension would allow the original cottage to remain visible, while giving us more space and light.
Q
What inspired your design? We’d recently been to Paris and were very taken with some painted wooden panelling and white tiles we saw in a shop, which became our starting point. We then introduced some original and reclaimed items, such as a ireplace from an 18th-century house in Surrey, as we wanted to take a more traditional slant. Sticking to the same looring and grey walls unites the spaces, along with the antique furniture and panelling. We used walking sticks suspended from the lights over our dining table for a quirky touch, and used details such as bureau handles and display cabinets in the black kitchen.
Q
Did you face any challenges? We had a tight budget, but needed to install heating, insulation and double-glazed windows, copied from the originals. he entrance was moved, and we built our extension, knocking openings through the thick external walls to connect the spaces. he project wasn’t without drama, and we parted company with our builder

KEEP A PERIOD RENOVATION ON TRACK BALANCING OLD AND NEW
Renovating or extending period properties can present unique challenges. Rather than combining mis‐matched materials and window designs that are at odds with each other, successful period renovations evoke a sense of continuity by marrying traditional elements with sympathetic additions. It’s easy to get lost in the wealth of options available, so keeping your renovation project on course is imperative. DESIGN ELEMENTS

AND BOARD
Felicity Headen and Gareth List extended their compact garden lat with a striking design in blackened timber Feature DEBBIE JEFFERY Photographer AGNESE SANVITO Architect NICHOLAS KIRK ARCHITECTS
What did you need to change about the flat? It was our irst home together, and we bought it because of the good-sized terraced garden. We’ve completely gutted the space: loors and ceilings came out, everywhere was newly wired, plumbed and replastered, and the bathroom was relocated in a former bedroom. We wanted to add another bedroom, which was how the extension came to be built. Now we’re expecting our irst child and the lat will still be large enough for us as a family.
Q
Were there any challenging aspects with the project? here was an old, leaking lean-to conservatory, which needed to be taken down, and we had to accommodate the diferent loor levels inside the lat and out in the garden. Our architect, Nicholas Kirk, came up with a great design, which gave us everything we wanted. here was a lot
Q
of paperwork, as we’re located in a Conservation Area, and getting planning permission took a while. It was also important that we didn’t damage the beautiful old window in our open-plan kitchen – we achieved this by building a false wall and ceiling to protect it. How has timber been used in the design? he extension is a woodframed construction, reinforced with steel and clad with charred timber. We considered other cladding materials, such as aluminium, but our budget was tight, and the blackened timber was both afordable and created a dramatic efect. Inside, the Douglas ir roof structure has been left exposed, which adds character. We both enjoyed designing the inishes and paid attention to small details, as those are the things you notice if they’re not right. Now the lat feels much larger and our bedroom enjoys views out into the garden.

‘The large windows at the corner of the extension, plus a door straight out to the garden, give the new bedroom a feeling of light and space’
NEED-TO-KNOW: CHARRED TIMBER USE INSIDE AND OUT
For centuries in Japan, wood has been charred black to make it resistant to fire, rot, insects and the damaging effects of ultraviolet light from the sun. The technique has caught on recently in the UK as a way of creating dramatic contemporary exteriors, but charred timber may also be used internally as a wall covering or on furniture. HANDLE WITH CARE
Charring timber yourself isn’t recommended, as the process is potentially dangerous. Charred products that are untreated can be fragile and need to be stored carefully, and boards that have been brushed and/or treated still handled mindfully. They can be treated with a natural oil to seal and protect them from dirt, water and changes in humidity. CHOOSE A FINISH EMBRACE INDUSTRIAL The brick wall that was outside before the extension was built has been sealed and left exposed in the new bedroom. This, combined with surfacemounted galvanised trunking for sockets, Douglas fir timber ceiling beams, and wide wooden floorboards help create an industrial feel
Charring the outer surface brings out the richness of the wood and the grain’s structure, while varying the intensity of the burning process produces different effects – from a traditional black look to a sleeker, more contemporary brushed finish.

SMART SOLUTION As well as concealing the cistern, boxing in pipework creates a handy ledge on which to display toiletries and framed artwork EXTRA SPACE Relocating the bathroom into a former bedroom created enough space for a curved tub and matching basin, as well as a walk-in shower in the corner
‘We installed speakers in the ceiling of the bathroom so we can carry on listening to music or the radio while having a shower or soak. Hexagonal tiles in a variety of shades add some interest to the loor area’
