Sitting room

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Jen Jukes and I live here with my husband, Ian, our son Jack, five, daughter Tilly, one, and cocker spaniel, Charlie.

Where I live Our home is a threebedroom detached house built in the early 2000s, in Williton, Somerset. We’ve lived here since March 2017.

Jen wanted the sitting room to be a family-friendly space but also somewhere for adults to relax. ‘Ian and I love to chill here in the evenings, or entertain our friends,’ she says. ‘With candles and the fire on, it’s really cosy.’ When they first moved in, the main problem, apart from the magnolia walls and threadbare carpet, was the room’s lack of character. Ian built a simple wooden surround for a pretty, white electric stove, and Jen hung a round statement mirror above, creating a clear focal point for the room. A big, off-white rug boosts the light and breaks up the dark carpet. ‘We had to replace most of the carpets in the house,’ says Jen. ‘It was a big expense, but I got a great deal from a local fitter by choosing the same one for the sitting room, stairs and bedrooms.’

What I wanted to change

Feature Annabelle Grundy Photos Colin Poole F

The whole house was drab, dated and felt disjointed. There were scuffed walls, dirty carpets and a very tired and tatty bathroom.

How I made it my own I’ve renovated the bathroom and kitchen, so they feel sleek and modern. I redecorated everywhere in calming greys, whites and pinks, so there’s consistency.

‘I started with silver greys and whites. Pale pinks have gradually crept in, which I’m happy with, as they add warmth’

My favourite part The dining area is a big success. It’s so bright and works brilliantly for us as a family, or when we have friends here.

‘I started putting in small touches of pink and gradually found myself adding more and more,’ says Jen. ‘It works brilliantly with the grey background and just gives the room extra depth and warmth’

Jen painted the dark brown banister white, updating its look. The understairs space has been turned into a cosy corner and the white trunks from Perfectly Lovely Interiors add useful storage

Style idea Boost the impact of a gallery wall with stylish black and white photographs in matching frames

My story... After five years in our two-bed new-build, we were desperate for more space. Three-bedroom properties are scarce around here so there wasn’t much choice. Also, with running my own business, @perfectly.lovely. interiors, and looking after our son Jack, I didn’t have the time to take on a big, complex project. This house was originally over our budget, but the owners wanted a quick sale, and we managed to negotiate a great deal. I loved the garden and spacious rooms, especially the kitchen-diner. I knew I could transform the jaded interior, but I definitely underestimated how much work there would be. There were marks on the walls, a scruffy bathroom, and stained, grubby carpets everywhere. I spent the first night here thinking, ‘What have we done?’ Thankfully, I came well-prepared. I’d created moodboards, designed the look for each room, worked out our budget and had chosen things like paint colours, tiles and carpets. I even had the kitchen fitter here on day one, measuring up for the new cabinet doors! In terms of décor, I love a simple, Scandi style, with crisp geometric patterns. Colour-wise, I started with silver greys and whites. Pale pinks have gradually crept in, which I’m really happy with as they add warmth to the place. I’ve maximised light everywhere and layered up with lots of accessories for softness and interest. The biggest challenges have been budgeting and finding time to do everything, especially since having our daughter, Tilly. This house probably isn’t forever, but for now, we’ve made it a fabulous family home. 16 homestylemag.co.uk

Kitchen-diner Smart, practical storage is key to Jen’s uncluttered look. Her Argos sideboard fits neatly into the dining area

‘A sociable kitchen-diner was top of my list, so this room really sold the house to me,’ says Jen. ‘The existing kitchen had old-fashioned cream cupboards and a breakfast bar sticking out from the wall, cutting the room in two. Once that was gone, we had a place for the dining table, and everything flowed much more easily. I couldn’t afford to pull the kitchen units out completely, and there was still some life in them, so I left the framework and just replaced the cabinet doors, drawer fronts and worktops. I kept the laminate floor too. It’s a bit scratched and probably not my ideal choice, but it would be a big upheaval to change it. I always try to think about where it’s worth spending money.’

This nifty circular shelf from Perfectly Lovely Interiors breaks up a plain wall and brings a touch of metallic

Jen took the idea for open shelves from a Cornish cottage. ‘I love the look, plus everything’s accessible,’ she says

The mix of white walls and work surfaces with pale grey cabinets keeps the kitchen feeling bright and spacious. ‘I love the white laminate worktops, and I’m pleased with how well they’ve stood up to wear and tear so far,’ says Jen

Expert advice Buying carpets Jen recarpeted all of the rooms, apart from the kitchen, conservatory and bathroom. Here are some guidelines for getting the right product for your home O Choose from 100 per cent wool, wool mixes or synthetics, depending on where the carpet will be fitted in your home. Wool is warm and luxurious underfoot, but wool-nylon mixes and man-made fibres like polyester are more durable. Polypropylene is the most stain-resistant option, so it’s ideal for children’s bedrooms, high-traffic hallways and any dining areas. O The look and texture of your carpet depends on pile length and structure, as well as fibre

type. The most popular is Twist Pile, a practical, multi-purpose option. Saxony carpet has a long, soft pile, giving a luxury look, while Berber has a more knobbly texture and velvet is smooth, dense and plush. O Carpet can be either woven or tufted. Woven carpet is a premium product. It comes in both plain and patterned forms and can cost around £80-£100 per square metre. Most carpets in the UK are tufted, meaning the yarn is fixed into a fabric backing. A wool mix or goodquality synthetic tufted carpet should cost from £20-£40 per square metre. Don’t forget to budget for new underlay, grippers and a trained fitter as well. Some firms will lift and dispose of existing carpet too, but do check as there may be an extra charge for this service.

Conservatory

As the conservatory is mainly used as a playroom, storage was an important factor. The metal cabinet from IKEA keeps toys tidy and out of sight

‘This room was a real bonus and we spend a lot of time in here,’ says Jen. ‘It’s ideal as a playroom for the children as it’s really bright, close to the kitchen, but a bit separate from the rest of the house. I haven’t had to do much to it, apart from painting the hideous deeppink walls, which are now grey. The blinds and flooring were already here and I’ve put down a really inexpensive rug, which I know will soon get battered, but is easy to replace. There’s no heating in here, which makes it too cold to use in the winter, so if I was doing it again and had the money, I’d put in underfloor heating.’

‘I always try to think about where it’s worth spending money and whether I can live with what’s already there’ March 2020 19

Painting one wall white helps the bedroom feel bright, while the grey panels add colour without dominating the scheme

Style idea Maximise a narrow space with a tall, slender mirror propped up against the wall

Main bedroom ‘Keeping to a limited colour palette creates flow and a sense of calm which was important, especially for the bedroom,’ says Jen. ‘Grey and white is my go-to combination and I tried lots of different greys. I settled on Laura Ashley’s Soft Silver, which I’ve used in most rooms here, and had in my old house too. It’s warm, not too bluish and has a nice matt look. I could have gone for something cheaper, but I think it’s worth investing in a good-quality paint that gives a really clean finish. We brought the bed from our previous home, but as I’m getting more into pared-back Scandi style, I swapped the decorative, French-style bedside tables I had for a more linear design.’ ‘Although I love greenery, faux plants are much easier - all they need is a little dusting,’ says Jen

Inspiring homes Jen kept the walls of Tilly’s room plain, using hanging accessories for interest and colour

Jack’s bedroom Jen continued the grey and white theme in Jack’s room, but was soon checking Pinterest for ways to add a more lively, fun vibe. ‘I wanted something quick, easy and effective. The idea of using paint to add colour and interest to the walls was perfect and it doesn’t dominate the room,’ she says. ‘I just masked off the lines by eye, and Jack helped choose the turquoise colour and did some of the painting too.’

Tilly’s bedroom

This painted crate, from Perfectly Lovely Interiors, helps keep Tilly’s bedtime books tidy, but easy to reach

‘Tilly’s room isn’t the easiest space,’ says Jen. ‘It can be a bit dark, and the ceiling slopes. Usefully though, it doubles up as a guest room as there’s a sofabed at one end. I recently redecorated it for Tilly, using greys, whites and a bigger statement of pale pink, so now it looks softer and prettier. There was wallpaper in here before, and we had a lot of sanding to do once it was off to get a smooth surface for painting. The white furniture and silver touches maximise the light. The big chest of drawers, from IKEA, came with black handles originally, but I’ve changed them for sparkly crystal ones, which makes it feel less bulky and a bit more girly.’

Large tiles emphasise space in Jen’s chic new bathroom. ‘I chose a smaller than standard basin which also works really well,’ she says

Jack’s bed was an eBay buy and the bedside table is from The Range. ‘I love the Scandi style,’ Jen says

What I learned... O There was already a perfectly usable dishwasher in the kitchen when we moved in, so we hung onto it. However, in hindsight, I wish I’d thought a bit more about keeping it. Although it would have cost more, a new, integrated dishwasher would have looked smarter and made a difference to the kitchen. O I’d rather have a few main pieces than lots of small bits, and I don’t hold onto items that I no longer need or love. I often sell stuff on Facebook; it helps keep things fresh. O Renovating the bathroom was more disruptive than I’d expected. We haven’t touched our tiny en suite bathroom yet, but I might just leave it completely as I don’t want to ruin my bedroom!

‘We love colour. White walls are not always the obvious option’ Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Laura Milligan, owner and textile designer at Laura Felicity Design. I live here with my husband, Dominic, a PE teacher, and our dog, Bailey.

Where I live Our home is a 1980s two-bedroom house in Henlow, Bedfordshire. We’ve lived here since July 2016.

What I wanted to change The dated décor made the house look unloved and unattractive. Nothing had been replaced or improved since it was first built.

Feature Renée Green Photos David Giles F

How I made it my own A new kitchen and bathroom were the big changes needed, along with new décor and fresh colour choices.

Style idea Combine varied sizes and shapes when creating shelf displays

Living room ‘Like the rest of the house, the original Artex ceiling had to be replastered by a professional. The previous owners had created a makeshift fireplace, with an electric fire in a purpose-made hole in the wall. I felt this wall should be the main feature and by pure chance, when walking Bailey one day, I literally stumbled across a discarded wrought-iron fireplace that was the perfect size for the small chimney area. The aim was to strip and repaint it but we actually loved its raw state. A wallpapered feature in duck egg tones around the fireplace (see p28) really makes it stand out. I felt the opposite wall, with the sofa, also needed some character and so I painted it a more vibrant shade than the other walls. Dulux’s Mint Macaroon did the job nicely.’

Inspiring homes ‘This perfect desk from Wayfair takes up a fair bit of space, but it’s so practical for storage and as a workspace. I created a shelf, which displays items to inspire me while I work’

My story... Within ten minutes of viewing the house, we both knew this would be our first home together. We got that excited ‘this is the one’ feeling and weren’t put off by the state of the place – it was just about liveable. We were realistic about our budget and knew we wouldn’t find a property in top condition. It also had a second bedroom; space for my muchneeded home office. The sale moved fast and three months later we moved in. However, because we needed to save, it was another two years before we started any major work. The advantage of living here first meant we knew exactly what we needed and wanted. Luckily, Dominic worked as a builder before becoming a teacher, so he has vast experience in renovations and was great at strategic planning and the logistic side of things. I focus more on the decoration and small details, so we really are the perfect team and were very hands-on with most of the work. The process was fairly straightforward, although we did definitely underestimate the time needed for the bathroom and kitchen makeovers. We needed to reroute the pipes under the bathroom floor and reroute a gas pipe in the kitchen and both jobs took longer than expected. When it came to the décor, I think visually, and knew from the offset how I wanted each room to look. This was my very first interior styling project, and I was excited to use my favourite textile designs in my own home. It really was our dream to buy a house and recreate it from scratch. We have gained such a huge amount of experience and expertise by doing so much of the work and making this house our own. While it may be too small to be our forever home, it is our very much-loved home right now.

Laura painted the shelving unit, originally her mum’s, in Paris Grey chalk paint from Annie Sloan

Office Laura converted the small guest bedroom, with garish yellow walls, into a stylish home office. It was a labour of love, as she wallpapered and painted the room and then installed the shelving. ‘The office is where I run my business, Laura Felicity Design. For the first couple of years I used an oversized desk and chair inherited from Dominic’s parents and the space was used as a dumping ground. Over this period, I was able to figure out exactly what I needed to make this a functioning and inspiring place to work. I didn’t want to crowd it with different storage units and felt that shelving was my best option for files, books and fabric samples. We also kept the room bright and light; my Nest Egg wallpaper and fabric, in mustard and light pink, was the obvious choice.’

Expert advice How to tackle some basic DIY Be well prepared before tackling your home decorating to-do list O Make a professional wallpapered feature by hanging the central panel first and working outwards. This allows a perfectly centred pattern across the wall. Be sure to mark measurements in the middle of your wall and find the centre of the first panel of wallpaper, allowing a perfect centre line for your wallpaper hanging. O Preparing walls and ceilings for painting takes time but achieves neat paintwork. Walls must be clean, sanding down bumps and filling holes. A quality masking tape along wall boundaries, such as skirting boards and the ceiling,

30 homestylemag.co.uk

gets a clean finish on the wall edges. Always remove tape when the paint is semi-dry to avoid cracking paint. O When creating a gallery wall, first mark out your wall size on the floor and try different compositions and spacing between the frames. Take photos of layouts and note the measurements. This reveals what works best before a nail hits the wall. O Always take window handles into consideration when installing roller blinds. If you can see the roll at the top of the blind when it’s wound down, make sure your fixtures are installed 1-2 inches away from the windowpane. When you wind down the blind, the bottom will not hit the top of the handles. The same applies to reverse roll and Roman blinds.

Kitchen

‘We’ve made a big difference with small changes,’ says Laura. ‘The copper handles and lighting, including the spotlight fitting from John Lewis, add character and break up the grey’

Dominic and a couple of friends ripped out the old kitchen, including the fixtures and fittings. The couple saved around £4,000 by sourcing items individually rather than going through one company. While they employed a professional fitter to help Dominic do the job, they did a lot of research before any work started. ‘We did a lot of homework for the kitchen units,’ says Laura. ‘We went to B&Q for the basic cupboards and the Kitchen Door Workshop for the neutral grey cupboard and drawer fronts. We didn’t change the layout but going for taller cabinets, simple lines and colours has created the illusion of more space.’

March 2020 31

‘This was a difficult room as we have an awkward wall on the left side of our bedroom,’ Laura explains. ‘Using my Dotty Bird wallpaper has softened up the angle and using it for the headboard and blind makes it more of a feature’

Bedroom Laura and Dominic inherited a dull, plain bedroom, which required new carpet and a wardrobe. Its bare state made the perfect blank canvas for the couple. ‘I could literally see how the room should look and was excited to decorate and make it a relaxing, romantic haven for us both. I was drawn to using the navy and blush combination for our bedroom scheme and once the wallpaper was up and the walls were painted, I knew the design needed something more. I then introduced the headboard, roller blind and reversible lampshades.‘

‘I was able to use my pattern and colour expertise to design a home we both love’

Bathroom ‘The bathroom was long and narrow, with no storage space, and only one of us could go in at a time,’ explains Laura. ‘Dominic had the idea to change the layout to create more space and maximise storage.’ Along with removing the old peach bathroom suite, the couple ripped out the airing cupboard, which blocked the room’s entrance. ‘By switching the bath and basin around, we have created more floor space. We opted for an all-white suite but wanted a touch of colour to come through and fell in love with the decorative Konkrete matt ceramic tiles that work so well with this vanity unit, all from B&Q.’

‘When we discovered this patterne d flooring, we knew it was the perfect way to continue the style and tone s from the rest of the house’

What I learned... O We spent a lot of time researching and sourcing things online to try to keep the costs down. In the kitchen, the units came from one place, the appliances from another, and the handles from elsewhere. We ordered the worktops online. O I think the mass of plants really brings something different to our home; they give it an almost jungle feel and brighten up the place. Plants do take some looking after though. We water them a few at a time in the sink. Removing the airing cupboard has created new space, perfect for the set of framed artwork from BlingPrints, collated by Laura

O Although we have renovated a house before, as this was a larger-scale project, we learned a lot about the planning application process. It seemed a bit daunting at the beginning, but we got there in the end!

In a well-ventilated room, cover your work surface and surrounding area with dust sheets. Lightly spray some of the dried flower stems in different spring colours, then leave to dry. Remove the dome lid from the wooden base and set aside. Take the block of dry foam and carefully cut down to around 7-8cm wide with a craft knife. Stick the foam to the middle of the base with a hot glue gun. Cut the dried flower stems down to different lengths with scissors. The tallest stem should be slightly shorter than the height of the dome. Arrange the flowers in the dry foam, starting with the taller stems at the back and shorter ones at the front. Cover any visible dry foam around the sides with some shorter flower heads. Use the glue gun to stick them in place if required. When you’re finished, carefully replace the glass dome on the wooden base.

Where I live

Feature and styling Lisa Moses Photos Katie Jane Watson F

My home is a onebedroom 1950s garden flat in Kings Heath, Birmingham. We’ve been renting this since August 2018.

What I wanted to change We were really lucky that the flat was in fairly good condition. The landlord had painted the whole place white so it was the perfect blank canvas. I just had to find ways to inject some personality and make it feel like our home.

How I made it my own I tried to think outside the box and find ways to decorate on a budget using upcycling hacks.

Our bold look Armed with a spray can and some sticky tape, Maisie Rees A 38 homestylemag.co.uk

Living room ‘As the flat was already white, I knew that by adding lots of black detailing, I could use a monochrome palette as a backdrop for plenty of brightly coloured furnishings and neon accessories. The first thing I did was paint the picture rail that goes around the room. I love collecting prints from local artists and independent businesses and I believe it’s worth spending a bit more on something original that no one else has. And, as much as I love doing things on a budget, I’m willing to spend money on good-quality products such as sofas, soft furnishings and artwork which will stay with us for years. My pride of joy is the green velvet sofa, from Maisons du Monde, and the gorgeous crushed velvet footstool from WHJ Design. They were expensive but they are forever pieces. This is a large room, so at the moment we use it for dining and entertaining, but at some point I’d like to have another sofa in here and convert the study into a dedicated dining space.’

‘I’m passionate about upcycling and I’m not scared to use bold colour’

‘I bought this nest of tables from a local charity shop for £10 and, after a lick of black and gold paint and some découpage with a roll of wallpaper, they’re now perfect for our flat. I used the same wallpaper to update the lamp’

‘I create collages in my spare time and used them to create this gallery wall with spray-painted frames. My latest upcycling project was this lovely wooden chest given to me by some friends. It was in great condition and I knew I wanted it to be bright. I also had some gold leaf, so I decided to glam up the fixings and handles’

MAKING Make your own wall art on page 48

My story... When we moved in, the whole house was a white box. For me, there’s nothing more depressing than a bland interior, so I was eager to start decorating the walls with colour, pattern and unique artwork, and filling the rooms with statement pieces of furniture. Because we rent, I had to think of cost-effective, non-permanent décor solutions. I have to come up with lots of temporary designs for my work, so I used these skills to think about my home. I came across some decorative tape in IKEA and tried applying it to my kitchen cupboards. It completely changed the look, so I started to experiment with washi tape and sticky vinyl and realised that it all peels off without any damage to the walls. After that I knew this was a good solution for all the rooms; I just had to decide on the look. The only permanent thing I wanted to do was change the colour of the grout in the kitchen and paint the picture rail. I sent the landlord some photos from Pinterest which reassured him that it would look great. Apart from that, I’ve only done projects that I can put back to its original state or take with us when we move. The whole process has made me think outside the box and I’ve ended up creating a home that is truly unique. Our landlord saw the house recently and was thrilled, which was a fantastic feeling. 40 homestylemag.co.uk

‘I wanted to create a similar black and white pattern here to the study but I didn’t want the hallway to be too dark so I used thin strips instead. The concrete head was £20 from a local selling site. I painted it yellow and then poured a tester paint pot over it’

Expert advice Make a washi tape wall Make sure you get it right with this sound advice O Whether you’re renting or just want to add interest to your walls, temporary tape is the perfect non-permanent solution. Just make sure your surface is suitable and that you do a test first. If a wall has been painted badly for example, it might cause problems when you come to remove the tape. Add a strip of the material in a place that is less noticeable and leave it on for a week. After a week has passed, take the tape off, noting how well it peels away and if it leaves marks.

42 homestylemag.co.uk

O Washi tape comes in hundreds of colours, so you can mix up the effect and be as creative as you want. Choose a solid colour and a geometric design to create a bold statement and use a white base for added impact. Alternatively, dot on small strips randomly, like Maisie did in her hallway. O If you want something more complicated, work out your design before you begin. This can be done on a computer or drawn onto paper, but the key for a professional look is exact measurements and straight lines. Try and use one long piece of tape for each line and be patient when applying it. If the design is wonky it will spoil the whole effect.

Inspiring homes

Kitchen ‘The kitchen was my least favourite room to try and personalise. It’s not like I could start ripping out the hardware or move furniture around, as it’s all permanently fixed. However, after checking with the landlord, I changed the colour of the grout from white to dark grey which instantly made it feel more modern. I knew I wanted to cover the plain white cupboard doors, but as they have grooves in the central panels, covering them in wallpaper or vinyl sheets would have been too fiddly, so the animal print tape, from IKEA, worked wonders as I filled the inset with strips. Then I simply added colour with tins Matt collected from his job as a head chef. I’ve managed to transform a very boring little galley kitchen into a fun space that’s renter-friendly.’

‘It can be so cheap and easy to transform a bare and boring room in a rented home, or in any home for that matter. We were so lucky that the space was all white, so it was just waiting to be decorated. All you need is a bit of sticky back plastic and away you go!’

‘I love turning charity shop finds into something funky and unique’

‘I love the bedside table in orange and leopard print that matches my wardrobe. It only cost £5 and I upcycled it in a few hours. It’s so satisfying to see the end result. I also upcycled the lampshade with pompoms and wallpaper’

Style idea A neon sign above the bed adds a touch of fun

Bedroom ‘I have used orange and animal print in all the rooms, so it was only right to incorporate it into the bedroom too. The gang portraits were £27.50 from InkAndDrop, and I put them in cheap IKEA frames that I sprayed neon.’

44 homestylemag.co.uk

Inspiring homes ‘Not every project needs to be big. I just sprayed this rattan shelf with some green paint, and I stumbled upon the gold statue, already sprayed, in a charity shop’

‘I made the typography print myse lf. With modern technology and print ers, it’s easy to create unique artwork’

‘I painted this basic IKEA shelving unit black , then added gold leaf to the shelves – you’d never guess it only cost £15! The leopard print armchair was from a Facebook selling site. ’

SHOP Shop quirky accent chairs on page 46

What I learned... O Renting can be restricting but it doesn’t have to be boring. Things don’t have to coordinate and I’m not worried about symmetry or having mismatched furniture. My rule is that I only surround myself with things that I love. O Experiment and be daring. Not everything of mine is a success, but since it’s mainly all cheap second-hand finds, I don’t worry too much if things don’t work. Your home should be an extension of your personality and bring you lots of joy. O If I see something I like but I can’t make it, I head straight to the supermarket interiors sections to see if they have a good-value alternative.

Make the look... LETTER PRINT You will need Top Tip If you don’t want to cut out the different patterns, simply divide some animal print paper into rectangles and arrange in a patchwork.

4 A4 paper 4 Coloured card 4 Glue pen 4 Double-sided tape 4 Craft knife 4 A4 frame

1

Divide an A4 sheet of paper into rectangles or go to homestylemag. co.uk to print out our template. If you’re creating your own design, it’s useful to plan it out onto graph paper first before transferring it onto the card. Collect different colours and textures of card or paper. For animal print, choose shades of brown, muted yellows, oranges, black and white. Using a craft knife, cut random shapes from the coloured card. For the giraffe, cut large holes from pale yellow and cream card, then mount onto light brown card so that the brown shows through the holes. For the jaguar, cut smaller ovals from yellow card, and mount onto black. For the zebra, cut vertical stripes from black and mount onto white. For the tiger, cut horizontal stripes from orange and mount onto black. Try to slightly curve the stripes for a more realistic look. For the leopard, cut irregular oval shapes from cream card. Glue this onto dark brown card, then cut smaller oval shapes from the dark brown card – inside the ovals, you will cut into the cream. Lay this onto medium brown card to create a tri-colour animal print. Lay the rectangles onto the template you created or downloaded in step one, and glue down. Use a dry adhesive like double-sided tape, so that the paper does not warp. Cut out the monogram letter twice; once from black and once from white card. Lay the two letters on top of each other, slightly offsetting to create a drop-shadow effect. Attach to the front of the design and frame.

A feature wall of framed prints and photos stands out against the black background. The boho rug and hint of pink add texture and contrast to the sitting room too

Welcome to my home A bit about me I’m Sarah Jones and I live with my partner, Liam, and our two cats, Bella and Milo.

Where I live Our home is a threebedroom new-build in Dudley, West Midlands. We moved in three years ago and this is our first home together.

Living room ‘In the living room, we went for Pavilion Gray from Farrow & Ball and painted the panel behind the sofa in a darker colour. Then I introduced tones of grey and white with furniture to keep the room looking soft and natural. I was worried the main wall was too dark, so I filled it with white frames and some of my favourite prints to keep it looking light. Fluffy throws and cushions in pink, grey and neutral colours give the room plenty of texture too.’

What I wanted to change The house was initially painted cream and I hated it. I wanted to introduce lots of pretty, soft colours.

Feature Zoe Bishop Photos Lizzie Orme F

How I made it my own Painting allowed us to put our own stamp on things, although looking back I wish I thought about choosing certain colours a bit more.

My favorite part Definitely our bedroom. As I spend a lot of time in bed with bad health, it was important for the space to be calming. Despite being in that room so much, it still makes me happy.

Shelving brackets make great hangers for lighting and macramé plant holders, like this one from IKEA

My story... Originally, we were looking at older properties to do up. However, as I struggle with health issues, I soon realised that a modern house would be better, as there would be less work involved. We found this row of new-build houses in Dudley and, although the area is a little far out from where we lived before, it meant that the house was more affordable. The new house has been an outlet for my creativity. I sourced lots of inspiration from interiors accounts on Instagram and Pinterest – my own account is @seventytwohome – and pulled out ideas I liked from interior magazines, collecting them in a scrapbook. Because it’s a new-build, we pretty much had a blank canvas to work with and I made it my mission to add my personality to each room. We’ve added shelving units in the kitchen-diner and a huge gallery wall on the staircase that reflects our lives together, while the painted feature wall in the sitting room has brought instant character and warmth. I’ve tried to make the whole house flow together and used colour to create a seamless effect. Although each room has its own colour palette and theme, the shades work together to form a story throughout the house, allowing it to flow. It also means items can be interchangeable from each room which makes it easier to rearrange and get a new feel. After three years of tweaking, I’m finally happy with all the rooms, but let’s see how long that lasts! I think because I spend a lot of time at home, I get bored quickly. Our final project will be the garden next summer. However, until then, I’ll wait to see what the next big Instagram trend is. 52 homestylemag.co.uk

Kitchen ‘The kitchen was already designed and ready to go when we moved in. We did have a choice of white or grey glossy units – luckily I liked the dark ones – but I wouldn’t have chosen them or the layout if I was designing the room from scratch. For now, though, we’ve worked with it. The kitchen came untiled so we saved up to buy Metro ones from Topps Tiles, then got someone in to fit them. We used a dark-coloured grout to match the units and give the tiles a more modern feel. I found tall open shelving units from Jysk in metal and wood which has given the space a bit of an industrial feel; they also double up as a great display unit. Originally, we had a dining table in here but it made the room feel smaller and it was awkward to get around to go out into the garden, so we decided to do away with it for the moment.’

Expert advice How to create a photo wall Personalise a space with a gallery of prints and pictures O A photo wall is a simple but effective way to add a personal touch to any space. It doesn’t have to be a large feature wall – think about small spaces that could do with brightening up. With some thoughtfully placed wall art and photo prints, an unloved corner can quickly become a centrepiece. O Decide what size your photo wall will be, then pick out your chosen prints and frames. Lay them all out on the floor to get an idea of their composition before a nail hits the wall.

Sarah has found lots of her buys on Instagram. The fun paper bag plant holder is one of her purchases from Etsy

O Try Command Strips to attach prints to the wall. These can be easily removed if you change your mind. They’re also useful if you want to update the gallery over time. O Pick a theme, with a series of pictures from one event which tell a story, like a wedding, anniversary, holiday or just prints of the family over the generations. To really tie the theme together, you can use photos with a similar colour scheme. O Alternatively, you could easily display your photo prints on a single piece of string. Clip them on with mini pegs and hang them from one side of the room to the other. March 2020 55

Liam wasn’t keen on the pink walls but, combined with the white-washed wallpaper, it’s created a natural feel for the space and it isn’t overpowering. I’ve complemented blonde wood accessories with the Malm bed from IKEA. I also love the soft voile curtains at the window and how they gently let the light in during the morning.’

What I learned... O I’m here 99 per cent of the time, so making it accessible for my needs, but also stylish, was really important to me. 4 Fabric, approx 60cm, depending on the size of the cushion pad 4 Fringe trim 4 Cotton lace trim 4 Cushion pad (ours was 40cm) 4 Paper 4 Sewing machine 4 Iron 4 Basic sewing supplies Make a paper template the same size as the cushion pad, plus a 1cm seam allowance all the way around. Pin the template onto the fabric and cut out to create the front piece of the cushion. Fold one quarter of the template over to make the envelope back and use it to cut out two pieces from the fabric. Pin strips of fringing and lace trim across the cushion front. Machinestitch each row to the cushion front. To make the back pieces, press the long edges over twice by 1cm each time with an iron, pin and stitch in place. Overlap the two back pieces to create the envelope-style opening. Lay them on top of the front cushion piece with the right sides together and raw edges aligned, pin in place and sew all the way around the square edge, using a 1cm seam allowance. Turn the cover right side out and press gently with an iron. Insert the cushion pad to finish.

First LIGHT Who doesn’t love a pretty pastel? Benjamin Moore’s gentle shade has a soft, rosy hue that’s a perfect pick-me-up for the new decade. We reckon it looks fabulous with shades of grey – what do you think?

WHY YOU’LL

love this look O Feminine and summery, this delicate hue is instantly uplifting. Use it as a neutral or let it take centre stage. O Team First Light with shades of grey – another key colour for 2020 – to give the look a bit of depth. Incorporate textured throws and cushions for a tactile element. O For an ice-cream colour scheme, pair First Light with other sugary pastel shades. Grey accents will act as a contrast and anchor the look. O If you’re not sure about going full-on with this colour, test the water with accessories. Lamps, rugs, tiles and cushions are a good place to start and there is a great selection of embellishments in this shade for 2020.

WHY YOU’LL

love this look O If you prefer darker shades,

then this colour is for you. It’s also a great way to bring nature into your home. O Not sure if you want it on your walls? Keep them crisp white and invest in a bottle green sofa instead, accessorising with bright green cushions. O Green is known for being grounding, balancing and peaceful – yes, even the darker shades! It’s a dramatic look but it pairs beautifully with other colours like coral, grass green, pinks and reds. O Adeline also looks great with both pale and dark wood, so if you have existing accessories it will work really well.

SLOW CRAFTING

GET YOUR HOME

SPRING READY Step into spring with a clean, clutter-free and super-stylish home. Yes, it is possible! Here’s how…

DECLUTTER Piles of paperwork, bags and shoes where they shouldn’t be, ironing not put away. Sound familiar? This is partly due to our busy lifestyles and ineffective storage, but a major problem is having too much stuff to start with. To shorten time spent cleaning and create harmony in your home – and head – you need to downsize your stuff. Take inspiration from the KonMari method, devised by renowned organising consultant, Marie Kondo, and declutter on the ‘spark joy’ principle. Kondo advises to choose what to keep by holding, feeling or wearing each item and if it doesn’t bring you joy, thank it and get rid of it. This is a cleansing process and it works, but it can take time. For a quicker way to conquer the clutter, try the 12-12-12 Challenge. Find 12 items to throw away or recycle, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to be returned to their proper home. Make it fun and set up the challenge for each family member and you’ll blitz your space in no time. If all else fails, you can’t go wrong with the ‘four-box system’. Label four big boxes ‘store’, ‘keep’, ‘donate’, ‘bin/recycle’, and get to work. Just don’t be tempted to ‘store’ too much, especially if you never use it or it’s not of sentimental value. Remember, you have to be ruthless at this stage. Once you’ve decluttered, stay in control by adopting the ‘one in, one out’ system, and be dedicated with this approach to prevent recluttering.

Feature Amanda Hemmings

The expert says... ‘If you’re fed up with looking at the same clothes in your wardrobe, hold a clothes swapping party with your friends. This is a great way to update your wardrobe without spending a penny and recycle all of your items.’ Rachel Burditt, owner of The Declutter Darling, thedeclutterdarling.com.

Expert advice

CLEAN Once the decluttering is done and dusted, it’s time to actually get dusting and get started on that spring clean! Don’t panic, it’s not essential to spend all weekend in rubber gloves to get your home in tip-top shape, but what does make cleaning much easier and faster is great tools for the job. It’s worth investing in a good-quality vacuum cleaner (HEPA vacuums are fab as they catch particles you can’t even see), as well as a decent extendable spray mop and a multi-purpose microfibre cloth. If you’re unsure of which areas of the home to tackle first, make a checklist and prioritise. Short on time? Then save the big jobs like cleaning the fridge and scrubbing the oven for a rainy day and concentrate on the large areas that are immediately visible such as windows, walls and tiles – a good wipe down of these often neglected areas will spruce up your space – benchtops, sinks, sofa covers and floors. Getting these areas gleaming will make the space sparkle on the surface and make you feel happier.

ORGANISE To stop the clutter creeping back in, you need to get organised and stay organised. How? Practical storage solutions! Boxes and baskets are your new best friends, and labelling works a treat. Labelling is an effective way to keep things in their place and for you to know what you’ve got and where it is. Colour coding is another go-to organisational method, and it’s a fun and visually pleasing way to get your things, particularly clothes, books and crockery, in order. Expandable drawer dividers are a must-have for organising small items, especially in that overflowing ‘junk’ drawer. Keep surfaces clutter-free by finding a dedicated spot for ‘stuff’ to go. Use a ‘clutter box’ that gets sorted at the end of each week, or hang up a pinboard as a practical solution to get paperwork off the benchtop and onto the wall where it won’t be forgotten. Or, eliminate paperwork completely by scanning receipts, bills, etc. as they arrive and set up an ordered digital system. Stackable racks inside cupboards can utilise wasted space, as can installing a shelf in the dead space above a door, and don’t forget how handy hooks can be. Once you’ve got your storage sorted, take a few minutes each day to neatly put items back where they belong, and think of it as therapeutic as opposed to a chore. The only challenge now is to convince your family to do the same!

Tip! Don’t rush out and buy a whole heap of baskets and boxes before you’ve even decided what you’ll be using them for. Organise first, then buy only what you really need. If you can, repurpose items from around the home. Shoe boxes, empty jars, pretty plates and trinket dishes can all become practical storage solutions.

A crisp white base paired with soft neutrals and sunny layers of mood-boosting yellow creates a fresh and inviting space. Be inspired with this bedroom scheme by IKEA

STYLE Styling your home for spring will not only revitalise your interior but it will give you a boost too. Textiles are a budget-friendly way to create a fresh look for the new season. Pack away the heavy curtains and replace with soft, lightweight blinds or sheer drapes. The laid-back elegance of a voile panel will let in more sunlight and create a carefree vibe that’s perfect for the warmer months. If your cushion covers are made from fabrics like velvet or suede, switch to a material such as cotton or canvas. A beautiful rug is an instant update that will transform the look of a room without the need to redecorate. Choose a statement design that expresses your personality. Tea towels and tablecloths are affordable buys that can change the look of your kitchen without any major commitment, and new glassware or crockery in bright colours or pretty pastel shades will lighten up your dining area. For a more permanent makeover, use wallpaper and paint an accent door or even the window frames in an uplifting shade; be inspired by nature’s palette and pick a scheme that invigorates you. In the bedroom, replace woollen blankets and duvets with crisp white sheets and lightweight linen or cotton throws. Decorative accessories, such as vases, lampshades and wall art, are fun ways to update a space without making major alterations. Think glass instead of ceramic, lively bright colours and floral motifs for a real spring statement. If flowers aren’t your thing, play with pattern or mix fresh neutrals with different textures. The most cost-effective way to give a room new energy is to move the furniture around. Even simple rearrangements will change the look and feel of the space and it costs absolutely nothing. And, it’s surprising how little touches like updating your coffee table books can make an impact on the overall look and feel of a room.

FRESHEN UP YOUR

bathroom in a flash Updating a worn-out bathroom needn’t cost the earth. Here are 10 quick and easy fixes that you can accomplish in a weekend

W

hether you’re sinking into a warm bath, brushing your teeth in the morning or taking off your make-up at the end of the day, your bathroom should be a relaxing haven, filled with personal touches that instil a sense of calm and wellbeing. However, more often than not, it can be a cold and unappealing space with tired fixtures and fittings. But don’t fret; here we’ve got 10 tips and tricks to transform your unloved washroom into a luxurious and indulgent space, without the need to splash the cash on a brand new suite.

1

BRING IN THE BOTANICALS

Afternoon Job

Fresh foliage is an easy way to usher colour into a tired bathroom and houseplants can help to purify the air too. Many affordable and low-maintenance greens – such as spider and snake plants or orchids – thrive in a steamy and humid bathroom setting. Place pretty pots or baskets on shelves and ledges, or create rainforest vibes by hanging on-trend trailing plants with dramatic leaves, such as string of hearts or ivy, from a ladder or bar suspended above the bath.

Houseplants, from £5.99; baskets, from £6.99, all Dobbies

2

REFRESH THE TEXTILES

In stant Update

Bring calm and cohesion to a mismatched suite with a fresh set of bathroom textiles. Fluffy towels, face cloths and a bath mat in a statement hue, or with a fun slogan, will create a colourful focal point in the room, and are an inexpensive option for tenants or those who aren’t planning a full renovation just yet. For a playful touch, why not opt for a shower curtain in a clashing colour or pattern? Or pick a key shade from your other textiles to unify the look. 80 homestylemag.co.uk

4

UPDATE THE WPreekend oject CUPBOARDS

A lacklustre under-basin cupboard can easily shine with a little TLC. The queen of upcycling, Annie Sloan, has formulated her chalk paint with DIY in mind, so you can take a paintbrush to any tired bathroom cabinet without the need to prime first. If your bathroom doesn’t have any built-in storage, a cheap set of vintage drawers bought from a charity shop or eBay can be given a fresh new lease of life with a quick lick of paint in a bold shade.

5

Afternoon SWITCH UP Job ACCESSORIES

Fixtures and fittings in a bathroom can be tricky and expensive to replace, but smaller accessories such as hand towel rings, toilet roll holders, rails and hooks for bath towels and dressing gowns can easily be swapped in an afternoon. Sleek and minimal matt black examples from Scandinavian design shop, Ferm Living, are a favourite of Instagram-savvy shoppers, but we love this ornate Ester set from Anthropologie for a touch of quirky opulence. All you need to add is a beautiful tumbler for your toothbrush and that token bottle of Aesop hand soap…

Ester towel bar, £32; Ester tow el hook, £20; Ester towel ring, £36 , all Anthropologie

Chalk paint in Greek Blue and Pure, £19.95 per litre, Annie Sloan

3

CHOOSE NEW Weekend Project HANDLES

Dated hardware can make an entire bathroom feel tired and unloved, but it’s possible to pick up new examples for a snip. For a luxe finish, opt for contemporary geometric handles in mixed metallic shades such as brass and pewter. For a cool Scandinavian vibe, soft leather drawer pulls hark back to nature; while ceramic knobs or antique-style cup pulls are ideal for period houses. If you’re not handy with a screwdriver, there are plenty of helpful tutorials and step-by-step guides available online for replacing cupboard handles.

Afternoon Job

Beyond offering much-needed privacy and warmth in a bathroom, a well-fitted blind is an easy way to inject colour, pattern and style to a space that’s in need of a lift. Though traditional wooden shutters are in vogue, a simple roller blind is an easy-to-fit alternative for just a fraction of the price. This rainforest-inspired design from Blinds 2go has a sophisticated, leafy print that’ll softly complement the plants you already have in your bathroom. Plus, it’s made from fully waterproof fabric, so it will stay dry and clean even if your window is right next to the shower!

In stant Update

There are few things nicer than sinking into a hot, bubbly bath at the end of the day, but not when your bathroom feels cold and uninviting. However, don’t worry; a few choice touches will make your space instantly more indulgent. A wooden rack across the bath is the perfect accessory for holding a scented candle, a natural sea sponge, some rich bath oil… or even a chilled gin and tonic! Or, if you’ve only got a shower cubicle, try tying a bunch of fresh eucalyptus around the shower head. Once the warm water starts flowing, you’ll be cocooned in a heavenly, spa-like scent! PAINT THE GROUT

It’s easy to fall out of love with a tiled bathroom if the grout is discoloured or mouldy. But don’t panic, there’s no need to take a hammer to the tiles just yet! Glazed, white metro tiles are the cheapest of them all, but they shine when paired with modern black or metallic grout. There are plenty of tutorials available online which will give you a step-by-step guide to grout painting, but all you really need is a foam paintbrush, some decorator’s tape, a damp cloth and the paint of your choice – there are lots of colours available from Amazon or DIY shops. After a few hours of patience, your bathroom will look brand new!

THE POWER OF

s g ru

Want a quick and easy way to transform a space? Time to roll out these magic mats

A

single rug can set the tone for an entire room. A game-changer for how a space looks and feels, choosing the right rug all depends on the room in question and what you’d like to achieve with its design and placement. Whether you want to connect spaces, add intrigue or create a cosy corner, read on for our top tips on the types of rugs that work throughout the home and the impact you can create with them.

Daytona Blocks red rug, from £59.99, Carpetright

HALLWAY As the first space guests will see, the hallway establishes your home’s character, hinting at what they can expect from the rest of your décor. As hallways can sometimes be quite uninspiring, you may want to choose a floor covering that brings some personality into the space. A brightly patterned or coloured rug, or something with bundles of texture, will add instant warmth into an otherwise unloved area. Another reason to consider putting a rug in the hallway is to create a walkway into the next room. Go for an eye-catching runner style that includes colour or pattern and is longer than it is wide to lengthen the area and make it flow into the next. Keep in mind that you want this rug to be durable; people will usually still have their shoes on as they come in, so you don’t want to be worrying about it getting damaged. Woven star runner, from £60, Next 88 homestylemag.co.uk

Style advice Illias rug, £399, Swoon

As it’s somewhere to relax, unwind and escape, a bedroom needs a rug that fits in with and complements the rest of the pieces in your private haven. If you’re adding a rug to an existing room scheme, you can either go for a design that blends in seamlessly or choose something that creates definition within the space. Placing a rug underneath your furniture will keep your scheme subdued, enhancing the décor rather than detracting from it. Although you will want to avoid anything too loud that will disrupt the peaceful mood you’ve created, you don’t necessarily have to stick to earthy, natural colours and plain designs. A deep, bold hue, such as dark navy or mustard yellow, or even a delicately patterned piece can create just the same kind of chilled-out ambience that you’re going for. In terms of fabrics for your bedroom rug, choose a high-pile soft cotton or wool for that dig-your-toes-in goodness that’ll make getting out of bed just that little bit easier. An oversized rug, large enough to fit under all four legs of your bed, is a great way to anchor your sleeping area, creating just enough impact without going OTT. You could also try a series of smaller matching rugs that will fit nicely under your bedside table, dresser and cabinet, creating a cohesive scheme and zoned areas.

LIVING ROOM

Portobello Road rug, from £79.99; Portobello Road cushions, from £14.99, Very

There aren’t as many rules when it comes to choosing a rug for your living room. If you’ve been eyeing up a bold design, then this is the best space for it. Usually the prime area for socialising, mixing and matching colours, shapes and patterns here will make for a warm and inviting environment. For example, a quirky, abstract design would make a striking statement piece. You could also use a rug in this room to define a particular space, like a seating area. To do this, choose a large piece – rectangular or circular rugs work well – and place your sofa first, then add the supporting seating and furniture around it. This will create gorgeous visual definition, framing a clear zone. In terms of materials, choose soft, plush fabrics that feel good underneath your feet, like wool or cotton. If your living room features beautiful flooring, then a smaller rug that complements rather than conceals is a better choice over an extra-large, wall-to-wall piece. For a super-cosy living area, try layering up rugs to form a stunning focal feature that brings impact in spades. The trick is to choose two rugs that are different in terms of width, colour and pattern, but that still work well with each other. Place the wider rug horizontally first, before placing the thinner rug vertically through the middle. This is also a great way of creating a large rug feature if you can’t find one big enough for your room.

KITCHEN Your kitchen might seem like an unlikely room to decorate with a rug, but given the amount of time we spend here, it deserves to be dressed up. Something hardwearing and textured can completely transform this area from cold and functional to cosy and inviting, and when placed in the middle of the room it will create an area of distinction between your appliances. If you have an open-plan living and dining area, then this is the perfect opportunity to use a rug to either connect these two spaces together or make them more individual. Sometimes, in a vast space like this, your furniture can look a little lost, but defining the two areas using rugs is a brilliant way to create a border between them, without the need for anything concrete, like walls. Using two rugs in the same style will both divide the zones and also create a unification between the two rooms, drawing the eye from one space to the next. This works particularly well in more minimal, pared-back schemes.

Top tips ● Use a liner under your rug to keep it from

slipping or moving. It should be the same size as the rug and the right material to work with your flooring. ● Rugs aren’t one-trick ponies. Use them to drape over a chair back or the top of a cabinet for a stunning effect. You can even hang one on the wall as an art piece. ● Don’t be afraid to base a room scheme around a rug that you love. Sometimes starting with a rug as your inspiration can bring your décor together. ● Think about fabrics for high-traffic areas or rooms used by pets. The more hardwearing are sisal, jute and polypropylene. ● Use rugs’ sound-absorbing qualities on hardwood floors or tiles.

Adding a picture rail and highlighting it in a brighter tone has added depth and interest to the walls

Bedroom makeover Jo was fed up with the untidy mess of clothes and shoes, so bespoke wardrobes were built to make the most of the sloped alcoves. They’re finished with rose gold handles from eBay that tie in with the other metallic elements in the room

‘I love shopping at HomeSense. It has a brilliant, eclectic mix of furniture and accessories that you never see twice, all at purse-friendly prices’

‘Using an interior designer saved me money’ Lost on how to transform her bedroom on a tight budget and worried she’d make costly mistakes, Jo Cole hired a designer to help create a room she’d love for longer

My room... My problem bedroom This space was tired, untidy and generally depressing. The broken blind and rickety freestanding clothes storage made it feel cluttered, while purple walls gave it a dated 80s vibe.

A bit about me I’m Jo Cole, and I live with my partner, Tim, and stepson, Ben, in a two-bedroom terrace cottage in Buckinghamshire.

How I made it work I decided to work with an interior designer, as I had no clue where to start, let alone how to stretch my tight budget. She convinced me to turn the room into a cocooning space with dark walls, and suggested savvy cost-saving solutions, such as building bespoke MDF cupboards and painting them the same colour as the walls. We also added gorgeous pendant lights and layers of texture to give the room a boutique feel.

It has to be the colour scheme. I knew I wanted something bold, but I would never have thought of teaming navy with coral. The room now feels beautifully cohesive and utterly stylish. March 2020 95

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home

Get creative with second-hand finds This 1970s console table was a brilliant find for just £15 in a charity shop. Teaming it with a plush velvet stool gives the piece a stylish, eclectic touch. Jo has turned it into her dressing table and has added a few lush houseplants for a sense of calm and wellbeing.

Paint the back of the door in a standout colour

Style idea The basic MDF doors are finished with simple panelling and rose gold hexagon handles to give them a designer feel at a snip of the price

Why should the back of the door be forgotten? Paint yours in a complementary or contrasting colour and you’ll add a surprise design element to your space. Jo continued the vibrant colour of the picture rail onto the back of the door, which helps add a bright touch to the dark walls.

Disguise a tired carpet with an eye-catching rug Keeping the original carpet was a huge money-saving success for Jo, as she was able to bring it back to life with a vibrant rug. Jo sourced this geometric rug to tie in with the bold colours of the room for cohesion.

‘Keeping the original bed and carpet saved me lots of money. It also allowed me to splurge on beautiful new additions, like the lights, rug and blind’

Bedroom makeover Hints of bold geometric patterns on the rug, blind and cushion bring drama and energy to the space. Jo specifically chose each item to tie the room together and create a balanced scheme

These pendant lights from HomeSense make a big impact and free up space on the striking copper tables for bedtime essentials

My experience… I was desperate for a more grown-up, boutiquestyle space that we could retreat to. When my friend suggested asking interior designer, Lou Wolfenden, for advice, my initial thought was that she’d be too expensive. However, her flexible approach meant that I could tailor her services to my needs. To pull our ideas together, Lou and I shared Pinterest boards and finally decided on a rich colour palette that would create a cocooning feel in the small room. Our joiner built MDF cupboards to fit the awkward alcove with a sloping ceiling, while an electrician added two pendant lights either side of the bed. Lou also ordered items like the bed, rug, blind and chair, to make the most of her trade discounts. Once the cupboards were fitted and the electrics were finished, it was time for the finishing touches, which I decided to do myself. I wasn’t entirely sure about adding the picture rail and painting it a bright shade, as I thought it would make the ceiling feel lower, but it has dramatically changed the room’s energy and instantly gave it a younger, playful vibe. I’m so glad I trusted my interior designer’s choices. Thanks to her, I now have the bold space I wanted.

My shopping list Walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s Estate emulsion paint in Stiffkey Blue, Red Earth and Ammonite, all £48 for 2.5L, B&Q. ‘I love the room now and actually want to go in and use it. I used to avoid it before!’

Bathroom makeover With her coherent theme and use of intense colour, Nicole instantly transformed the bathroom from boring to bold. She kept costs to a minimum, customising the bathroom’s existing fixtures with a dark blue paint picked up in the clearance section of her local DIY store

‘My mini makeover has made a massive difference’ With speedy updates, stylish budget buys and a dramatic tropical theme, Nicole Deutsch turned her bathroom from bland to beautiful in a matter of days

My room... My problem bathroom

A bit about me Hi, I’m Nicole Deutsch. I live with my husband, Brett Tomsett, and our three children in a 1930s four-bedroom semi in Worcester Park, Surrey.

The bathroom functioned perfectly well but everything in it was so old-fashioned, boring and unappealing. I really disliked the mirrored wall cabinet, fussy patterned border tiles and ugly glass shower screen, which had a dreadful swirly design.

How I made it work I couldn’t afford to change the major fixtures, so I transformed the room by introducing a tropical vibe. I adapted and painted the existing furniture in a deep blue, then painted the floor white. I painted over the patterned border tiles on the walls too, to disguise them. Finally, I swapped the glass screen for a shower curtain, and added gold metallic accessories and leafy green plants.

My favourite part

Before

The shower curtain made a huge difference! It looks great against the white walls and dark blue paintwork, and it’s much more modern than the glass screen. March 2020 101

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home

Create a focal point in your room The painted washstand and shelves draw the eye in this room, and Nicole made sure they made a statement. ‘I didn’t want any bare white walls, so I accessorised the whole basin area,’ she says. ‘I’m a big fan of open shelves for interesting items, like the wooden crates. The metallics and foliage add texture, and everything pops against the dark background.’

Style idea Before you splash out, look in your home for unusual items and accessories that could add to a new look

Make more of paint Paint is Nicole’s key decorating tool. ‘I always look out for deals on returned and discontinued colours, and I mix leftover paints to make my own shades,’ she says. ‘I also learnt how to turn bicarbonate of soda and emulsion into a multi-surface chalk-type paint.’

Choose a look and go for it Nicole confidently applied her strong blue and green colour palette and clear style to every part of the room, ensuring maximum impact from the bold, leafy theme. ‘I layered up with colour and accessories,’ she says. ‘I got plants and added gold touches to link the different areas and break up the walls.’ 102 hhomestylemag.co.uk t l k

‘I’ve made chalk paint before and used it in the garden. It’s really easy, cheap and very durable’

Adding extra storage and boosting the natural vibe in her bathroom, Nicole chose a nifty wooden bath bridge from Sainsbury’s Home. It fits across the bath perfectly, thanks to its extendable design

Bathroom makeover

Small details help pull Nicole’s theme together. She painted the white shower curtain pole navy to match in, and changed the chrome curtain hooks for gold ones to echo the other metallic touches

My experience… Although everything in the bathroom was working, the décor was really tired, dull and very 1990s. I was keen on a jungle-inspired feel with leafy patterns and deep, dark colours. However, with next-to-no budget, I knew I’d have to think creatively. The contrast border tiles were the biggest problem, as they clashed with everything. I decided to hide the pattern by painting over it. Following online instructions, I mixed thick, chalky-type paint, which was perfect for smoothing the textured surface. Once the tiles were covered, all the walls were just white so I could start building my new look. First, I painted the marble-topped cabinet below the basin with an inky blue. The change was so incredible, I went straight on to paint the bath panel and radiator. Next, I removed the wall cabinet’s mirrored doors, leaving open shelves for some green plants and interesting accessories. Next to go was the glass shower screen, which I replaced with a blue-green, leafy patterned curtain. Finally, I refreshed the laminate floor with a lick of white paint. The whole project cost under £200 and took about three days, but it feels like a new room. I hope we’ll be able to refit the bathroom from scratch in a couple of years’ time, but for now, this is a great stopgap.

Build cupboards at the side of the breakfast bar to maximise storage

A practical breakfast bar has been worked into the design of Kayleigh’s new kitchen, not only to create a subtle divide from the dining area, but also to provide an additional work surface and extra storage space. Kayleigh gathered ideas and inspiration through her Instagram: @mrstrebs

‘Our kitchen now works for family living’ A simple structural change has made all the difference in turning Kayleigh Trebble’s previously dark and cramped kitchen into a bright and welcoming family-friendly space

My room... My problem kitchen

‘I chose a sleek handleless design for the cabinets to stay in keeping with the modern style of the property’

A bit about me I’m Kayleigh Trebble. I live here with my husband, Simon, and our children, Tilly and Maddie, in a fourbedroom semi-detached townhouse in Wiltshire.

The previous kitchen was separate to the dining room and both were dark and cold and didn’t work together as a sociable space. The kitchen cabinets were plain white and functional, just not to our taste, and the appliances were starting to show their age.

How I made it work Knocking down the wall to open up the space into an open-plan kitchen-diner has completely transformed the downstairs of the house. The modern style of the new handleless kitchen fits in with the contemporary design of the property. We have also incorporated a breakfast bar to act as a social link between the two zones.

My favourite part

Before

The blush pink herringbone tiles really make a statement. Lots of people tried to talk me out of going for the pink colourway, but I’m glad I did as it’s now a real focal point in the room. March 2020 107

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home

Shop around for better prices Kayleigh invested a lot of time researching everything from the appliances to the tiles, to make sure she found them at the best possible prices. ‘I had the paint we used colourmatched from an expensive brand,’ she explains. ‘I also used eBay outlet shops of big retailers, such as Currys, to find extra discounts.’

Style idea Create your own typographic artwork for a budget-friendly styling idea

Balance pretty with practical Matt units were high on Kayleigh’s wishlist, to withstand the daily use from her young family. ‘We had a high gloss kitchen in our last house and it was a nightmare to keep clean!’ she recalls. ‘The matt grey finish means fingerprints don’t show up as much. It was the best decision I made.’

Plan your kitchen layout to suit awkward spaces Without a separate utility room, Kayleigh has kept the nook by the back door as a designated utility space. ‘I like the fact that this part is tucked away, so you don’t see it at first’, she says. ‘We had the boiler boxed in along the back wall and I continued the tiles so it still felt linked with the main space.’ 108 hhomestylemag.co.uk t l k

‘We shopped around to get the best possible prices and are now eBay converts!’

Kitchen makeover The white wooden shutters had been installed by the previous owners, and offer Kayleigh and her family a good amount of privacy, without blocking the natural daylight

A self-confessed bargain hunter, Kayleigh picked up these cobalt velvet bar stools for just £50 each at a Sofa.com outlet store. The pop of blue adds a contrast to the pink scheme

My experience… Opening up the kitchen-diner was high on our priority list when we purchased the property in 2018. The old kitchen was starting to look a little worn, so this was the first part of the house we tackled. Being a townhouse, the kitchen and dining room made up the whole of the ground floor so we knew it was going to be a big job. Simon and my dad ripped out the kitchen themselves to keep costs down. The builders then got started by knocking through the adjoining wall between the kitchen and dining room. I chose a sleek, handleless design for the cabinets and went for a dark grey matt finish for a contemporary yet timeless look. Once the electrics had been finished, the flooring and Howdens kitchen was fitted and we could get started on the finishing touches. Wooden worktops add warmth to the room and I’ve had a lot of fun accessorising with blush pink and grey details to help tie the whole space together. Knocking down just the one wall has made the world of difference and means we now use the room in a much more sociable way as a family.

Method

1

Heat a large, lidded frying pan over a high heat and add the lamb. Fry for 8-10 mins until the lamb starts to brown. Lower the heat to medium, add the oil, onion, garlic, cumin, tomato purée and greens and season. Stir, cover and cook for 20 mins until the lamb is cooked. Stir in the oregano

and most of the rosemary and remove from the heat. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6. Place 1 sheet of pastry on a clean surface, brush with melted butter and top with another sheet of pastry. Repeat to use 4 sheets of pastry. Keep the remaining 4½ sheets of filo under a damp tea towel to stop them drying out. Keeping the longer side of the pastry sheets facing you, lay half the lamb mix in a line along the middle of the top sheet of filo. Starting at the side nearest to you, roll the sheets away to make a long tube. Transfer to a lined baking tray, with the seam underneath, and shape into a semicircle. Repeat with the other 4 sheets of filo and filling and transfer to the baking tray. Halve the remaining pastry half and brush with butter. Use this to join the 2 tubes together to form a wreath. Brush with butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 15-20 mins until golden. Mix the yoghurt, most of the mint leaves and some seasoning in a bowl and top with mint leaves. large bowl and mix in the ground almonds and coconut. Make a well in the centre and whisk in the milk mixture to form a smooth batter. Divide the batter between the 2 tins, spread evenly, then bake for 20-25 mins until a skewer comes out clean. Cool slightly before removing from the tin, then leave on the side to cool completely. To make the frosting, place the chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water and heat gently until melted, then allow to cool. Dip the halved strawberries until coated halfway up and dip the tips in the remaining coconut. Place on a tray lined with parchment paper and chill to set. Take the coconut milk tins from the fridge and scoop out the set coconut cream, discarding any liquid. Weigh 300g of this into a bowl and whisk in the remaining chocolate and golden syrup. Place 1 cake onto a serving plate and spread over a third of the frosting. Top with the other cake and spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides until smooth. Decorate with the chocolate strawberries around the edge. Sprinkle the rest of the coconut in the centre of the cake.

Shelving stories This is my favourite corner as I love how each shelf tells a story. I am mad for monochrome so to get the look I wanted on a budget, I spray painted bargain pieces I found on the high street to match. I also added my favourite antiques and prints to show my personality without breaking the bank. Mixing in some plants brings some warmth and life to this corner – I’m in love! @budgethomeinteriordesign

Bathroom bliss We purchased our house in March 2017 and we’ve been renovating it room by room ever since. This year we tackled our family bathroom. To complement a bold paint colour, we used matte white metro tiles complete with light grey grouting. I love supporting local businesses and found a company who make reclaimed timber bath boards. I also recycled a gin bottle as a reed diffuser - I just have to be careful not to add it to my drink when I’m taking a bath! @thediydads

Foliage frenzy

Natural touches After searching for a period property for so long without success, my husband and I decided to buy our second newbuild on a small development in a really lovely village. Being unable to decorate for six months meant that we had to find another way of injecting some much needed colour into our master bedroom and I think the mustard tones work with the faux ivy so well. It’s definitely my favourite room to escape to in the house. @houghton_no5

I’ve never considered myself a frivolous person but when it comes to my house, I can’t stop. I got carried away with the foliage wall and fell in love with the burnt orange velvet chairs, but I’ve never looked back! I love blending plants and greenery with bold and bright colours. @westonroadrenovation

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Lee Jackson We speak to the designer and stylist about his career How did it all begin? I was offered a single day’s work styling and presenting a room makeover for a BBC daytime television show and it snowballed into a full-time job very fast! I’m still a little shocked at my own cheek as I used to cold call television producers and magazine editors with specific feature ideas.

Describe a typical day There is certainly no typical day. I could be designing, planning, researching, pitching, making props for a shoot or an event, sourcing props, or actually on location. My favourite days are spent in my studio with my laptop, books, coffee and tear sheets, formulating ideas for a shoot or an event. Add to a neutral base with pastel pops of colour like Lee has

Tell us something weird and wonderful about yourself

Feature Catherine Smalley Photos Kitchen: Sussie Bell

On a conservative estimate, I have decorated approximately 1,500 Christmas trees! Last year, I thought I was below average with only 49 trees decorated, but this is the sort of volume regular folk dress in a lifetime!

Describe your style My home is inspired by the Czech children’s author and designer Miroslav Šašek, who was famous for his colourful travel books. I love mid-century prints, patterns, tones and colours. With work, I am a bit of a chameleon, but I love any job that involves natural elements.

Where do you find your inspiration? Between jobs, I take pictures, create mini-films and animation, 130 homestylemag.co.uk

paint, make things and – besides interiors – my other main passion is writing stories. I have an ‘inspiration antenna’ on at all times, as ideas can come from the most unlikely places.

Who are you stalking on Instagram? I enjoy @avantgardevegan for great veggie food ideas, @thenaturalcreatives for natural inspiration and @ theatomicranch for interiors.

What’s your proudest career moment? I think it would have to be a general pride in successfully maintaining my career. I am entering my 20th year and 2019 was definitely my favourite work year yet with a wonderful balance of international jobs.

Who would you swap homes with? I saw a tour of actor Neil Patrick Harris’ brownstone townhouse in Harlem, full of antiques and art, that I would happily move into, or maybe the beach house in Netflix’s Grace and Frankie.

What does this year have in store for you? I have overseas shoots booked and I am particularly looking forward to returning to Italy, a country I love working in. On the home front, I want to gut and redo my main bathroom. On a general note, I am working hard to reduce waste on all the events I work on and to be mindful of everything I purchase and use.
