HKCC Design Year Book 2015

Page 1

FOREWORD Dear Friends, Since the inception of our Design Programme back in 2003, we have been highly supported by the School of Design (SD) of our University in many big ways. Riding on those supports, our Design team has been working diligently in developing our Design Programmes into a potential new force for the art and design industry. Over the years, our Design students and graduates have won a wide range of awards and prizes in various professional fields such as Sony World Photography Award, HK4As Kam Fan Student Award, Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards (Student Category), IFVA Awards, Arts Pavilion Competition of West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, The Fly High Advertising Creative Contest, etc. Our past Graduation Exhibitions had very interesting themes each year such as “Express Show”, “Arise”, “Designers’ Banquet”, “Ignite”, “Firefly”, “EnterPlay”, “114EnvisioN22”, “干戈” as well as “The Brew”. Last year, our Design team had a new vision for a new overarching identity “A Show” to embrace all the exhibitions. The Design Annual Show held last July at the busiest Central Oasis was a great success. This year, besides the Graduation Exhibition held at PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus, the Design Annual Show 2015, which showcases the best selected works of our Year 1 and Year 2 students, will be held at InnoCentre in July. To provide an additional platform to display the works of our students and graduates, we decide to publish annually this Design Year Book, which contains a wide selection of works for our students and graduates from different design areas. Hope you enjoy reading it!

Dare To Be Colorful Best Final Project NGAI Man Yan Vitaminwater has inadequate media exposure in Hong Kong. It results in an unclear brand image. The campaign aims at persuading the audience to consume Vitaminwater and giving Glacéau’s Vitaminwater a brighter image. The idea of the campaign is to associate the colourful Vitaminwater with youth. The campaign appeals to the emotion of the target audience.

反欺凌法寶套裝 Best Final Project PANG Hoi Man This project aims to provide some tools for the target audience to defend the victim in a bullying cycle. Most of the bystanders are not willing to offer their help since they don’t believe they can make changes. Therefore, the campaign will mainly focus on that “you can easily offer a powerful help”. There are four variables in this campaign: direct mails, smart phone application providing the tools, Youtube commercials for promoting how to use the tools, and posters for promoting the whole campaign.

06 | 07 ADVERTISING DESIGN

Relax, Renew, Revive.

Relax, Renew, Revive Best Final Project YUEN Chung Yan This campaign promotes the idea of 3R - Relax, Renew, Revive. A lot of Hong Kong secondary school students are stressed out by academic results, friendships and parents’ expectations. In this project, some quotes are delivered to encourage and cheer up the students while the parents and teachers are showed how to care for the students. Hopefully, the message can remind students to relax and comfort their feelings so that they will be more confident and ready for the future.

你的更好 Final Project LAM Sang Sum Kai Bo Food Supermarket is one of the largest supermarkets among food retail chain stores. It sells economical and high quality products to compete against the monopoly of the two other supermarkets in Hong Kong. In order to increase customers’ awareness of Kai Bo Food Supermarket, a collection of promotional advertisements is created to tell the public that Kai Bo is their best choice. The metaphor of marriage is employed to express that people would find Kai Bo to be their better halves as the housewife in the TVC implies that she has divorced with Wellcome and Park’nshop, and found Kai Bo to be better than the two.

08 | 09 ADVERTISING DESIGN

Develop As A Whole Final Project LAU Hiu Ching Amber Nowadays, many parents are aiming to raise multi-talent kids in order to increase the competitiveness. Taking advantage of this current mindset, this project promotes how ballet helps to achieve one’s whole-person development. The primary target audience is parents with young kids. The campaign aims to let parents notice the brand of Vivian Kwok School of Ballet, and willing to send their kids to attend class.

Super ECO - Animals Final Project YIU Tan Ying Super Eco-animals is an application game for people to play and learn the message of “Today’s wastage is tomorrow’s shortage”. Polar bear, Panda and Penguin are the main characters of the story. It is about how they save energy, reduce waste in daily life and present the importance of green life to the target audience. Meanwhile, a promotional truck will go to different locations to attract people to play and win the prizes.

10 | 11 ADVERTISING DESIGN

The Cycle of Integral Life Client Project LAU Ching Yu The project’s message is that the advantages of E-waste do not only belong to the environment, but also human beings. It is visualised through a circle to express that once you recycle E-waste, the advantages will get started continuously and it will go back to you at the end. Besides, the animation aims to raise people’s awareness of electronic waste and let people understand that recycling E-waste is a positive cycle for their life. The slogan of the campaign is “The cycle of an integral life” as circle represents perfection and wholeness.

垃圾 是可以回收的啊! Client Project CHEUNG Pui Shan Many people will use “rubbish ( 垃圾 )” this word to curse people apart from “人渣 敗類 廢人”. However, among these words, “rubbish” is the only one that can be recycled. This campaign is to let people know about that “rubbish” is not that bad. At least it can be recycled to help the earth. The meaning of the word “rubbish” is redefined in this campaign and some methods are introduced for people to do recycling.

ENVIRONMENT AND INTERIOR DESIGN

Void Funeral Home Best Final Project TSE Man Yau This project was inspired by a quote from the novel “Norwegian Wood”—”death should not be the opposite of life; it should be the part of our lives”. A space is created to represent the world between the living and the dead. One foot steps into the world of death while one foot stays in the living world. The name “Void” represents the space of the funeral home—an imaginary space of death and the living— to experience the void and uncertainty of living and death is the main purpose of the funeral home.

The DEPOT A New Hub of East Kowloon Final Project LAI Hok Ming Wallace A surreal place - the depot gives an impression of a totally different community to the outside world. The lower level of the depot will be a big green park in the middle of the commercial area, a “jungle” in a cosmopolitan, which gives a sense of “untouchedness”, help visitors to go back to their very basic selves - an unrestricted place full of imagination. This can also be a place to escape from the real life, from work, from stress.

Expression In-Between Democratic Plaza in Mong Kok Final Project LI Kui Sang There are a lot of things that Hong Kong people want to express. Living in a regular concrete jungle, we always bury our ideas in the mind. We have unlimited ideas but not many channels to express. This project is designed for people to express themselves in this city full of buildings, to express ideas between the concrete blocks and to colour such a monotonous place by our unlimited ideas.

14 | 15 ENVIRONMENT AND INTERIOR DESIGN

Molecular Music Centre Local Indie Band Centre in Kwun Tong Final Project SUN Shu Man In Hong Kong, being a famous musician is not easy. It is particularly true for a local indie band. Indie bands need platforms to publicize their music. Lack of performance venues is a serious problem. The aim of this design is to publicize local indie music. Indie music is like a cell which is split up by local pop music and its diversification. The Local Indie Band Centre connects directly with the “Fly the Flyover01”. The design creates a boundary between interior and exterior spaces as a transition from a noisy outdoor space to a place that is full of music. Lastly, the facade of the building will oscillate in the wind. It simulates the sound wave and this facade will change the vision of the area.

Weightless Community Home Office in Sai Kung Final Project CHOW Lok Yi Nowadays, there is an increasing number of “SOHO” worldwide. The reasons include the nature of one’s work; being fed up with the boring and restrictive office environment; the needs to take care of their children or even pets. In view of these, some people prefer to work at home. Besides, not everyone who works at home is accompanied by friends or family members. Some of them might work at home individually for long duration, which is unfavourable to their social lives. Hence, I intend to create a Home Office Community with liberty and intercommunication for potential users.

Utility Unit - Product Design Best Final Project PANG Kei Him The project aims to create a survival tool suitable for all situations for prolonging survival. This product is a self rescue tool with multiple functions which helps people in case of emergency. An existing brand GERBER is used as a research base for the project.

Different Shapes of Grey - DIY Kit Design Best Final Project LI Man Wing This project aims to inspire people to act green by sustaining their used products. Through participation of the DIY process, people could learn how to make use of ready-made products and reproduce a usable product, e.g. using the packaging as a mould. The DIY Kit is just like a seed, reminding people to build up an environmentally friendly habit.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION

Lazy Laboratory Best Final Project YUEN Sin Yee Alice Many people do not care about how to spend time, or they are just being lazy without a goal. It’s time to take a step back and see how laziness affects our life and find out ways to overcome it. “Lazy Laboratory” is an experiment which helps people to understand themselves and face their laziness. I hope the audience will realize “No matter how busy and lazy you are, you have a choice” after using the application.

Dragon Best Final Project LAM Yo Yo Some people may think dragons are just from human imagination and not real. This project aims to arouse people’s interest in the Dragon Culture. All the outcomes are intended for both adults and children. Indeed, it is a good opportunity for Western people to understand more about Chinese myths and legends.

30 | 31 VISUAL COMMUNICATION

Lok-wood Magazine Final Project LEUNG Yat Hei Lok-wood Life is a concept to share a kind of lifestyle that balances between consumption and satisfaction. The concept starts from a reflection of our living quality - is spending more money equal to gaining more happiness? In the magazine, some suggestions to practice a Lok wood lifestyle are introduced, such as more observation in daily life, supporting inexpensive local restaurants, and making things by our own hands to get satisfaction.

Limitless Life Final Project WONG Lai Hung Everybody lives in a routine lifestyle. People eat, sleep, study and work everyday. It seems that people do not have much autonomy in living because they are living under countless rules and orders. People might not depart from rules and orders of the society as they are living in the society, but people do have choices in living. To live differently, I lived in a new environment under the only limitation of fulfilling the duties of a student. This project introduces an application which can record our daily life.

Wah Fu Estate Final Project LEE Ying Tung This project aims to study the living style in Wah Fu Estate and to show human touch through their daily activities. Four areas, namely food, living environment, entertainment and Wah Fu Estate residents, are studied through this project to find out how these categories of local culture can reflect human touch and also the Hong Kong Spirit.

32 | 33 VISUAL COMMUNICATION

The Pig President Best Final Project TAM Yat Him Zeno In this story, there were five members Salted Fish, Pig President, Locust, Boss, Lucy. The story happened in a small island in the subtropical regions. In this city, people only care about money and power, they never have dreams. “This city is dying, you know.” People in this city have a lot of negative power instead of dreams. They never think that everything can be changed. All they do is being an audience watching people die. The story wants to show the final result of being absolute obedience. For a better world, we need to have our dreams, and we have to fight for our dreams. Let’s change the world and achieve our goals.

Home Final Project CHE Cheuk Yi Being treated a dinner at home becomes very normal in Hong Kong, parents cook for their family every day. The one who cooks the homemade dinner is not a famous chef, but the one who loves you the most. Everytime you eat outside with your friends, you lose a chance to communicate with your precious family. People always treasure things after they lose them.

The Fisherman Final Project CHEUNG Sze Nga The fisherman is a force-fed duck. He fishes in the shallow sea. He is once satisfied with small fish until his ambition gets bigger. Meanwhile, a mosquito from the rubbish island invades his brain and this made him seek for the biggest fish. Once he finds the biggest fish, it drags him to the deepest ocean, and tortures him almost to death. However, he survives and finds a beautiful island after all the suffocation. Stay hopeful. The future is bright after all the darkness.

34 | 35 VISUAL COMMUNICATION

Pinctada Client Project CHEUNG Sze Nga This client project is to establish a new brand image for the mother-of-pearl line of The Pearl Farm, a subsidiary company of Fukui Shell Nucleus Factory. The new branding conveys the concept of sustainability by recycling unwanted mother-ofpearls into exquisite artistic masterpieces. It has the strength to create charm of vitality, transform lives and spirits into any forms out of MOP. The outcomes include the brand name, the brand story, the logo, packaging, the business card, a set of postcards, a website and a promotional clip.
