INTRODUCTION

The academic year of 2020/21 was another special experience under the shadow of the pandemic. Our teaching and learning interactions have evolved from ‘online everything’ to the ‘hybrid’ mode, attempting to benefit from the best of the two worlds—virtual and physical. Within a short time, reaching out to one another via a screen became a second nature to many. Some seized the advantages of online learning to improve time management in order to excel. On the other hand, as most design subjects gradually resumed face to face lessons, yet still accommodating those who were confined to their faraway localities. The human touch from in-class dialogues to the chit-chat with peers was no longer taken for granted but deemed all the more precious even though behind masks. This year, our Design Annual Show 2021 showcased student works developed fruitfully in such a hybrid context. The theme of the exhibition show—&—captured conceptually the essence of this dual environment. While the combined mode of the virtual and physical worlds will likely remain in the years to come, flexibility is the key. We will continue to exercise our creativity to go beyond the limitations imposed on us by the changing circumstances.

This project aims to convey the concept of personal hygiene in order to prevent the spread of the virus during COVID-19. The creative strategy of ‘making a big fuss over a minor issue’ is used to tell the convenience of using Walch sanitising wet wipes by contrasting it with the extra-exaggerated actions we do in our daily lives.

Depression

Depression is a common pyschological illness. Our society tends to label depression patients without offering much help. In fact, we have to understand the pain of depression before we can have true empathy to care for and accompany those who suffer from depression.

CURRY 8

Under Armour has a strong brand image and a well-known original story, yet their product and technology are not as well-known as their story. This leads to a stagnant market situation comparing to Nike and Adidas. In this campaign, I promoted Curry 8 stylishly in order to attract young customers.

Value of waste

唔想餓親me,快食Indomie

This project is aimed to attract young adults who have the habit of eating instant noodles for lunch. Cooking Indomie is convenient, and the concept is to show that cooking Indomie is faster than ordering from food delivery service.

This project is aimed to design an advertising campaign to show that waste’s value is much more than we think. It is common to see youngsters blame themselves as ‘trash’ or ‘rubbish’ when they face failures. However, is it true that waste has no value? Is ‘waste’ only an adjective for us to define ourselves? For JW PEI, those unwanted plastic bottles are valuable materials.

Make Tangible Memories With Lomography 讓回憶觸得到

With the threats of technology development, film photography strives to survive in the photography world. Technology makes things virtual and less physical. Humans are creatures in need of physical intimacy with one another to maintain their relationships. Lomography hopes to encourage people to store their memories tangibly with film rolls by telling them to feel the temperature of life.

For most people, buying second-hand fashion is just like searching for treasure. Therefore, second-hand clothing is reminiscent of objects with old stories. Owners of clothes carry with them memories about the clothes before they are consigned to second-hand shops. Hence, the concept of this advertising campaign is about searching for “cozy stories.”

Meaning in the meaningless.

Why do we exist in this world? What if tell you nothing is meaningful in the world? This wordless book is to inspire people to stop searching for the meaning of life and start living in the moment by introducing them to optimistic nihilism in the most fun, interactive, and thought-provoking way.

Cha Chaan Teng is an iconic culture of Hong Kong. However, because of the rise of the chain restaurants, the antiqued Cha Chaan Teng or mom-and-pop restaurants are gradually declining. These kinds of the restaurants are a treasure because of their cultural and historical values. This game is to give the next generation a better understanding of the classic cuisine of Hong Kong.

Hey, I am sick!!

In Hong Kong nowadays, excuses have become a part of people’s lives. In order to conceal possibly unacceptable behaviours, people start to tell lies, such as calling in sick. When lies can conceal every mistake we have made, it is a distortion of social values. Sometimes it is difficult to master the boundary between telling the truth and making excuses. Therefore, the project aims to inspire people’s reflection on the use of excuses in a humorous way.

FamiTreeHole

This project motivates Hong Kongers to communicate with their family members with appropriate expressions to create harmony. Through this app, users can practice bravery and prudence, and spend quality time with family in a non-disturbed mode. Despite this, my project is just a stepping stone and the main idea is to promote the importance of real-life communication.

The Silent Sea

Hong Kong has more than 15 thousand hearing-impaired people. Although they can use sign language to chat among themselves, many normal people do not learn it and thus find it hard to communicate with them. This game tries to create a solution to ease the problem of communication between the deaf and normal people. Let both sides realise that communication without spoken words can be as efficient.

15-Minute City

The project investigates COVID-19’s impact on human behavior and how it can shape future urban environments. It reinforces the concept of the “15-Minute City” that residents can access whatever they need within a 15-minute walking or biking distance from home. This idea introduces a fresh perspective on how we may live, communicate and interact within our community.

Canson Rebranding Project

Pulping, bleaching and fabricating—it takes manifold procedures to produce paper. Canson is a classical French brand which excels at paper manufacturing, and it offers superb quality products. This attracts me to conduct this rebranding project, and I would like to enhance Canson’s brand image with its history and high-quality papers.

Stereotypes of Insects

VISUAL COMMUNICATION STUDENT 113112 INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN IIYEAR [ 1 ] [ 2D ] [ 3D [ 4D ] CHAN Hiu Tung People always have stereotypes about insects as their appearance is weird and people lack knowledge about insects. In fact, insects are not as bad as people think, they are part of nature and are common in our daily lives. Therefore, want to build a positive image of insects and eliminate people’s misunderstandings through my works.

Colour Blindness Exhibition

The Cantonese Culture of Hong Kong

about Cantonese words has now become a common phenomenon in Hong Kong due to the habit of replacing Cantonese words by English vocabulary or other languages. Therefore this project is aimed to remind Hong Kongers not to forget about Cantonese sayings through making them feel cool and proud of speaking Cantonese.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION STUDENT 115114 INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN IIYEAR [ 1 ] [ 2D ] [ 2D ] [ 3D ] [ 3D [ 4D ] [ 4D ] CHAN Lok Yiu There are some misconceptions about being colour blind. People who are colour blind are not receiving much help in Hong Kong. Therefore, this project would like to raise the public’s awareness and increase their understanding of colour blindness. The theme of magic is used to promote colour blindness with a positive connotation.

Healthy Diet - Nutrisland

Eating well stands an important criterion for us to maintain our health. Eating nutritious food is not about giving up all the junk food, nor about counting and limiting our absorption of calories every day. It is a habit of enhancing our immune system and boosting our mood.

“Nutrisland” is a restaurant which promotes healthy diets and delightful vibes in a playful way.

is
It refers to the mechanism by which an individual’s or a group’s language and/or culture imitates that of another group. It is a common but necessary term in sociology, but no one seems to care. Therefore, I hope that, through my works, people can understand the relationship between themselves and society.

The relationship between the brand and Hongkongers has become more distant than before. My design aims to shape a better brand image and to create a new brand story for Yeung Gwong, so as to establish a stronger connection between young people and the brand.

Human x Infinity

The most significant limitation of man is time. People have blindly pursued infinity since ancient times, longing to get rid of their limitations and reach the realm of physical infinity. Initially, people are limited, but technology has allowed people to get close to physical infinity. In this speculative project, I want to explore whether humans will still be human in the future by designing objects for them to stay awake.
