PREFACE We are glad to share with you our study trip in London, United Kingdom and what we have learnt in these 10 days. 16 students from 4 design streams view the same things but appreciate them from a different perspective. In this book, we want not only to introduce London to you like a travel book, but also show you our inspiration of design, cultural and life from London through our stories, our photos and our drawings. Wish our book had wings to transport you to London and our words and images had magic to make you experience the same with us. Especially thanks to Hong Kong Community College for 75% of sponsorship, Miss Vera SUN, our leading teacher of this trip, for the detail pre-trip preparation and our graduate, Michelle Law, who lived in London, introduced and brought us to a magnificent place in Dover. Without all, we cannot have an enjoyable and fruitful study trip.

hello, london!

8

Landing at 4.39am in the early morning, we said hello to London and started our long day of travel. After losing network connection for 12 hours, some of us were excited to see the SIM card vending machine and bought a SIM card to activate the smart phone at once followed by continuous Whatsapp’s notifications.

Back to the heaven from an isolated island, we took the Heathrow Express to the interchange underground station.

9

london underground London Underground is a public metro system with history over 150 years. The red circle and blue strip logo is one of the classic icons of London.

Frankly speaking, the hygiene of the tube was below our expectation. Different from Hong Kong, eating and drinking are allowed in the tube here, which partly contributes to an unsatisfactory environment.

While Hong Kong people are hiding under umbrellas and getting away from strong sunlight, the locals simply enjoy the sunbath on grass whenever the sun comes out. They treasure sunlight a lot because they have uneven daytime and nighttime during summer and winter. Other than that, they also like spending their time in a park reading a book, chatting with friends and family, walking dogs or enjoying the food.

horse guard parade Opposite to St. James Park is the White Hall where the Horse Guard Parade was held. Horse Guard Parade is one of the popular attractions for tourists. Tourists formed a circle to watch the changing of the Royal Household Cavalry dressed in red and blue, sitting on the back of huge black horse in the plaza. The Royal Household Cavalry performed professionally and controlled the horse well. We were happy to see a traditional ceremony on the first day of our trip.

Right outside the Covent Garden Station, there are many small specialist shops and market stalls. We had a walk in Apple Market nearby where we found a range of craft, antiques and second hand books. Besides, we went to a shop, London Graphic Centre, selling a great variety of arts materials in two storeys. We had an exceptionally enjoyable shopping time in such a large art materials supplier which we have never seen in Hong Kong. Finally, some of us left with a big bag of art supplies.

national portrait gallery Portraits of important and famous people in British’s history including Henry VII, Elizabeth II and Shakespeare are collected in National Portrait Gallery from different centuries and different countries. The collections include not only paintings, but also photographs, drawings and sculpture. Although we only know little about the great people shown in the gallery, we enjoy the gallery walk here.

It is a huge Gothic church located in the City of Westminster. It seemed the pointed arches were ubiquitous in the area. The Great Bell, also known as the Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament were also located here. These Gothic architectures gave the city a vivid historical image. Inside the gigantic church, we saw a bunch of chapels. They were all decorated exquisitely with mesmerizing stained glasses. In the church, amazing engravings were everywhere. Under the huge dome, the only thing that we knew was how tiny we human beings were. However, we were also the reason why these magical

thames river cruise

The Thames River is the longest river in London. Taking the tour, we experienced many impressive buildings along the river. For example: the Tate Modern, Tower Bridge and London Eye. Instead of walking on the ground, we were able to view the same attractions from another perspective. Every time we passed through a bridge, people on the bridge would wave to us. It appeared to us that people here are so friendly, the waving hands were like saying “welcome to London!” to us. On top of that, the sunny and cloudless weather deserved to be mentioned. We could even imagine the clouds as cotton candy that we would love to eat. Taking the journey, we could view different sides of London at once. For example, they have area with more historical buildings and places full of modern, commercialized buildings. As a past colony of the United Kingdom, however, Hong Kong is now craving for development, leaving behind the old and tradition. How we wish our people could learn from the Londoners, knowing the value of the past and realizing that the old and new can co-exist perfectly. Besides the architectures alongside, the staff on the cruise introducing the spot was hilarious. Speaking with a traditional British accent, he showed the humorous side of the English. When there was a bunch of naked people playing on the beach, he made fun of it, which triggered the laughter of all of us!

The final destination of the Thames River Cruise was Greenwich. We were fortunate enough to meet up the GDIF2014 (Greenwich + Docklands International Festival). They held games stalls, outdoor drama theatre and workshops to celebrate this festive. The one thing that caught our attention after landing was the colourful dancers and joyful music. It was like a carnival here in Greenwich. Children were running around, playing board games next to the performance while grown-ups were all lying on the grassy land, letting the sun to embrace their bodies. To us, it looked like an extract from a French movie – so relaxing, so romantic, so joyful. This scene was

in fact everywhere in London. We saw many families taking a relaxing afternoon here. The scene was overwhelming as it was something very rare in Hong Kong. The balance of work and life had been well demonstrated by the Londoners. Why can’t we, Hongkongers, do the same? Can people stop and appreciate the beauty of our own land as the Londoners do? Living a holiday without electronic gadgets, only with primitive board games. We must learn to enjoy the day with the person you love.

Activity - RCA Graduation show Architectural and interior design

36

RCA Architecture Show 2014 is an amazing exhibition held by Royal College of Art, a leading postgraduate art and design school in London. Architectural projects cover three various topics from reducing nuclear risk to criticism of slaughtering method. It reflects British college students’ concern about social problems of different countries and aspects. They try to tackle the problems by architecture and its program. Some designs start from material and form exploration while some focus on how the program strengthens the core message. Decorated with creative display methods, every design can show designer’s personality and uniqueness.

37

Museum - museum of brands, advertiseing and packaging We utilized the discounts that the London Pass provided. We took a visit to the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising and the Kensington Palace. The Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising had widened my knowledge to packaging. It was really amazing to see the development of different types of packaging. After the visit to the museum, we went to the Portobello Green Market nearby. Nostalgic CDs and DVDs could be found in the market!

Attraction - London zoo

40

Similar to many families in London, some of us chose to spend a sunny morning at London Zoo in Regent’s Park with feathers, furs and fluffy tails. On our way to the attraction, we saw there were many people traveling by bicycle. It is very common in London, as they have developed infrastructure for bicycle users. London Zoo is one of the world’s oldest zoos with many different rare species of animal. We had great experience with the animals of different sizes from those as small as Facundo Arrizabalaga and penguins to those as large as giant tortoise and giraffes. We also enjoyed ourselves in the Butterfly Paradise where myriad species of butterflies flying around us. It is a good opportunity for us to get in touch with different animals. 41

Walk and Tour - Brick Lane Brick Lane, a gloomy old street in East End, is one of the cradles of subculture. Streets and buildings here are all decorated with eye-catching graffiti. Brick Lane Market is a traditional flea-market affair, with a rich diversity of products and wares with everything from food, second-hand clothes (always worth a look for the retro-lovers), furniture, magazines, toiletries, sweets, electrical equipment and more. This place is appears to be full of crime and danger. Probably the rumor of Jack the Ripper adds the sense of peril to Brick Lane.

shopping - Oxford Circus “They o bvi the theo ously uphold ry what you of “you are w of them ear”. Every one pa their out ys effort on look.” – Tooke

For a lot of girls, it is definitely an excitement to visit the Oxford Circus. Name any popular fashion brands that you can think of: Burberry, Marks & Spencer, Topshop and Primark. They can all be found here. How can we not to be thrilled? We spent a whole afternoon here and we concluded that the Londoners love fashion. On the street, we saw a lot of dressed up, stylish British walking in the street. Exquisite suits were in commonplace. The UK fashion industry is one of the most vibrant and creative business sectors, with show-stopping talent, craft and ingenuity, and at the heart of this is an industry that directly contributes over £6.6 billion to the economy. From Marks & Spencer to Stella McCartney, the UK’s fashion brands are an important part of their heritage.

The Science Museum is the most visited science and technology museum in Europe. There are over 15,000 objects on display, including world-famous objects such as the Apollo 10 command capsule and Stephenson’s Rocket. Despite of these informative items, there was an impressive temporary exhibition – The Rubbish Collection. This collection could be said as a project. They tried to collect one month’s rubbish produced by the visitors, staff or anyone in Science Museum which aim to arouse our attention about the impact and the fate of what we throw away. However, you will not believe how empty this collection room is in such a crowded museum. The smelly rubbish scared off many visitors and it was difficult to convince us to participate in photographing the display items but contributed our rubbish to this project.

While we were waiting for the delicious tradition fish and chips, we all chatted together and Michelle shared her experience and advice to us. Having a good time in a comfortable restaurant with relaxing environment, all the tiredness was gone and we continued our journey. Although mild hiking on flat road was still difficult and tired for most of us who used to stick with computer and chair, it was worth to adhere to spend a day with a picturesque view and enjoy the view along the ridge of White Cliff.

OXFORD

Being a first-time-visitor to London, some of us were brave enough to travel to another city in the United Kingdom – Oxford. The place is located in the South-east of England, neighboring to London. The city is proverbial for the University of Oxford, which is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. Buildings in Oxford demonstrate examples of every English architectural period since the arrival of the Saxons, including the mid-18th-century Radcliffe Camera. Oxford is known as the “city of dreaming spires”.

70

Home of the University of Oxford, academies were all the rage in this city. We became a city walker, taking a relaxing wander on this startling city. There are lots of schools and colleges. Fortunately, we encountered a graduation ceremony. Therefore, there are many graduates who were wearing the academic dress and walking on the street. We could tell their excitement and joy from their laughs. With the knowledge that they own, they could make their contribution to their motherland; devote the best of them for the betterment of this land.

On the other hand, we saw many small shoe shops selling the prominent Oxford shoes. The shoes are originated from Scotland, later, it named after the University of Oxford. Even the small stores were nameless, all of them looked so age-old with ancient decoration. We could see the cobblers behind the window were very old. Yet, they made every piece of the shoe by hand.

Apart from that, Oxford is one of the filming scenes of “Harry Potter”. Harry Potter’s popularity continues to attract people to visit the film locations and inspiration behind the films. The Tudor architecture of the grand Dining Hall in Christ Church College of Oxford was the inspiration for the set design of Hogwarts Great Hall. Walking through the filming location, it made us felt like we were part of the movie!

Richmond Park

Richmond Park is the largest Royal Park in London. Unlike the artificial and decent St. James Park which we visited in Day 1, it is raw and natural. There are only fresh air, extensive grassland and a small teahouse. People enjoyed their day on grass under the golden ray of sun, enjoyed the gentle breeze with their bicycles, enjoyed the delicious picnic food with friends and visited the wild deer, the residents of the park.

Trafalgar Square We accidentally went into this amazing subway, which is full of illustration. We saw an enormous tile mural covers the walls of the subway under the south of Trafalgar Square. Taking a careful look on what was drawn on the tiles, it depicted scenes from the history of the square. It appeared to us that the subway is like a history timeline of the city.

Royal College of Art’s Graduation Show Visiting the inspiring artwork of the potential designers in the Royal College of Art, our horizon was broadened. High technology was well demonstrated in their artwork. In addition, the choice of materials was an important aspect that we could learn. We observed that they would meticulously consider the impression and durability of the materials. More than that, sustainability is also their consideration when choosing materials for most of them. What more important we have learnt in this show is the power of a great product design. Many impressive designs such as a prosthetics, which can transmit feeling to the users and a pen for a blind person to recognise, colour and shape. As a designer, improve living quality may probably be our major mission.

London College of Communication’s Graduation Show

LCC is a constituent college of the University of the Arts London and located in the Elephant and Castle. It stays ahead of creative industry development and offers a wide range of courses in media and design for potential student. We were happy that the graduation show was held within the period of our trip. Some of us seized the opportunity and went to LCC for graduation exhibition on our free day.

Shopping @ Harrods

Harrods is one of the world’s most famous luxury stores. It is located in Knightsbridge which is an exclusive retail district in London. This department store is famous for offering a wide range of products and services. It used to be known as the store where you can buy whatever you can think of. There is a rumor said you can even buy an Indian elephant here in the past. While this may not be the case anymore, the assortment is still enormous, including exquisite candy, high quality saddle, famous art pieces, and even Harry Potter’s Nimbus Two Thousand. Everything in Harrods, not just its products, is attractive and impressive including the dizzy food halls, Egyptian Hall decorated with the pharaohs and the old modernized lift. Visiting Harrods is definitely a great experience and it seems to be a place for sightseeing more than a department store for shopping.

We first went to British Museum where it is a great collective memory bank of human achievements. It was absolutely amazing. It is not only a must-go sightseeing place for photo taking, but also a place to learn the history and culture from the most primitive to the most recent time. The artifacts come from worldwide like Asia, Greece, Rome, etc. The collections are outstanding and are grouped based on geographical location. Surprisingly, entry fee is free which unlike most of the museums in Europe with expensive admission fee, like Musee du Louver. From this, we can see how the British attach their importance to promote understanding of diverse cultures, history and stories to their nation and visitors. As the British Museum is very large and informative, it takes the whole day to visit throughout all sections. However, it is a nice place to go when you have nothing special on plan. 83

China Town Chinatown is one of the must-see attractions for most Chinese visitors. There are good restaurants for all type of pockets. Most of them have displayed some fried animals like ducks, which is a familiar scene in Hong Kong. The Loon Fung or See Woo supermarkets are packed with fresh exotic fruits, vegetables and cuts of meats. It is a great place for having meal or just taking a walk for the ambiance. More interestingly, we enjoy seeing the Chinese road signs as well as the signs of little shops in a foreign country with a sense of geniality. This is like coming to a small town of Mainland. It is definitely worth visiting. We have also been to the sweetest attraction in London- M&M’s World in China Town. When we get into the store, the huge glass cylinders were full of colorful M&M’s and the large M&M’s characters figure catch our attention. Besides, unlike most of the shops in Hong Kong, the customer service here is interesting. The staff will sing and dance to entertain and bring happiness to the customers. We can feel the passion in this candy store in a cold day and carry off our tiredness after visiting British Museum.

Apart from the Broadway in New York City, West End London is the largest theater district. Seeing a musical becomes a common tourist activity in London nowadays. Lots of famous long running shows including Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Lion King have performed continuously in the Victorian buildings with luxurious decoration. Tonight, we are glad that we can enjoy one of the best shows in London - The Phantom of the Opera in Her Majesty’s Theatre. We think it is classic for all ages, even for those who are not interested in classic opera. The show instantly attracted our attention. The live singing was awesome as well as the seats in the middle section of the stall which offer us a great view. We were also excited especially when the chandelier fell and stopped just above the audience’s heads. We were surrounded by the show, sort of encompassed by it. It is hard to give a great description about this without spoiling the surprise of it, but we can say that the entire experience was fantastic and we all absolutely loved it.

BRick Lane

This is a street located in the East End. The place is different from those we visited. This area around is full of graffiti. We were lucky enough to witness an artist doing his artwork about the World Cup 2014. Brick Lane has its own style, where subculture grows pompously here. Brownish walls are all decorated with unique graffiti. People could express their view, talent freely. We tried the oldest bagel shop in London. The shop was very simple and low profile. Still, the queue was very long. As shops here close much earlier than those in Hong Kong, it is therefore exciting to see a 24-hour-running shop here. While we were taking photo of the shop, the man posed in front of our camera. He then told us how delicious the food here was. Wanna take a break and be relieved? In brick Lane, there is a man who can help you. As we walked by, we noticed a man putting up a board, writing “GBD5 slap me for your relief. We were so surprised to see people earning money in this way. Even this method is cruel, yet, they have their own way to stress out. Perhaps we should seek ways to relief as well.

We ended our journey with a visit to the British library. Lamentably, this library is not open for tourists. Therefore, we could only take photos outside this gigantic architecture. Constructing in brick red like our Hong Kong Polytechnic University, it is the largest public building constructed in the UK in the 20th century. Even though we have no access to the books, the lust for knowledge from the locals had spread onto us. The area was full of people reading quietly, looking so concentrated at their books.

It was the time to leave no matter how unwilling we are to say goodbye to London. Scarcity of elevator and escalator was our first lesson learnt in London. Going to Heathrow Express by bus is definitely a wiser alternative. We took our luggage back from storage and went on our journey home.
