SPRING
SPRING 2018
2018
It is not easy thinking about spring when I look outside the window and everything is still snowy here.
I prepare myself a coffee, I sit down to write my letter and I think for a while about something I’ve read in Giz’s interview ... A perfect day just needs a walk in the sun with your dog, listening to the sounds of the countryside, the nothing , only you and your own thoughts.
There are people who expect great events to be fully happy, and they are totally wrong for not assessing each and all and of those little moments day to day of which is really composed the happiness. Happiness is this very moment, that next to a coffee and being with myself, I start to reflect on the things that are really worthwhile.
Happy are those moments in which we are able to remember that we should never lose our essence and value everything we have without ever losing the perspective of who we are and what we do not want to become.
The snow will melt soon giving way to the birth of flowers, smells and colors of spring.

When it comes to gifts, I am of the mindset that it is better to give than to get. Yet I have to admit, it is fun to be the recipient of some sort of treasure. It doesn’t have to be extravagant-sometimes a simple gesture is more meaningful.
The longer I experience SL and the friends I have made here from around the world, the more I value those simple and caring gestures. SL is such a creative and vibrantly artistic and caring community.

Rum? 一期一会 “One life, one encounter.” Every encounter is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter – so treasure each one… life’s moments happen once…. 異体同心 “Different body, same mind.” Harmony of mind between two people – the way we should all live…

FROM HUBRICK’S LOUNGE • Cosplay
COSPLAY Text by Hubrick/Photography by Carley Benazzi
We could say that clothing define us, as from our dressing room emanates a long list of personal data. But, what happens when we break the social standard? Are we still ourselves? It is acceptable? In this issue of Versus we will enter into the cosplay sub-culture, an increasingly widespread trend that is found among urban tribes and role plays. The word cosplay is composed from the contraction of the English words “costume” and “play”. So we could define it more broadly as a “costume game”. What does this mean? In the same way that those who interpret alien behaviors to themselves, out of a theater stage or a movie set, could be considered role players; the “cosplayers” go a step further by also adopting the physical appearance of their favorite characters. These characters usually belong to a movie, TV series or more often to comic, anime or video games. In short, a cosplayer tries to recreate as faithfully as possible a fictitious character to whom he feels certain admiration to exhibit proudly in one of the many events that take place around the world for it. Just to mention some known examples we would have: the Comic-Con of San Diego, BlizzCon in California, Comiket in Japan, Japan Expo in France and Salón del Manga in Barcelona. This trend, which began to become popular in Japan during the 70s, has also had its echo in online communities. In fact there are many video games that allow us to disguise our character from others who originally do not belong to that specific video game, thus emerging the virtual cosplay. Of course Second Life is not an exception to the influence of this beautiful trend. Many of us have succumbed to the temptation to disguise our avatar for some kind of themed celebration. Some even wear a regularly like vampires, anime characters, comic book superheroes, etc. And although we do not realize that many times we look for a certain aesthetic in our style of dress that we base on someone we admire ... whether or not real. Obviously, we can not forget who deliberately disguises himself as a manga character, anime, comic, video game, etc. And even if you ignore it, maybe the hairstyle you are wearing is based on a character from Final Fantasy, Naruto or Vikings. To a greater or lesser extent and more or less puristically, we have all had some kind of contact with the cosplay. To a greater or lesser extent and more or less puristically, we have all had some kind of contact with the cosplay, consciously or not. Clothing defines us and gives us security. So when arrives those time in life that we only have problems, we will always have the option to change the scarf by a magic cloak which allows us to fly to evade or give us the strength to face what we owe. After all, we can be everything we aim to be.

BEAUTY “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” (Judy Garland) Beauty in 2018 is highlights glow worthy skin, no fuss hair and bold make-up details that keep things beautiful and interesting! Many new skins coupled with mesh heads in SL make us appear more real --- those tragic washed out orange skin tones of yesteryear are long gone. Now there is a wide range of realistic complexion matching skins available on the grid. As for eye-make up you can choose everything from glittering to monotone eye shadow palettes that really make a statement by using a different color for your lid, crease and undereye. On the runway, look for bright, bold colors such as electric blue and ultraviolet. Rounded- edge cat eye flicks, bright colors and under liner play up your eyes while leaving everything else including your lips subtle. Find a rose shimmer texture and use it on lips, and cheeks! Bottom line keep the face make up simple and go with bolder eyeliner. And, for those with mesh heads, don’t forget to put on those great big lashes! By Sita Writer

“All art is autobiographical; the pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” (Federico Fellini) Trends come and go, and style evolves. It’s important to have pieces of jewelry that are timeless and look chic despite ever-changing fashions…it is also fun to keep up with the trends! Kungler’s jewelry is one stop shopping for timeless pieces of jewelry as well as for those pieces that are trending in 2018. Kungler’s jewelry is expertly researched and created because this designer only makes pieces she would wear. If you feel like your jewelry collection is getting stale, check out Kungler’s for the trendiest jewelry on the grid. Look for asymmetric hoops, thick, round ‘80s style hoops that have seen resurgence this year, anklets, and pinky rings! Kungler’s is also a great place to shop for statement earrings and necklaces, remember the bigger the better! If that is not your style, layered necklaces are also all the rage. Look for a short chain that should fit like a delicate choker with two longer chains as an added bonus with cute little charms to finish it all off. Kungler’s offers jewelry that will accommodate every SL look and budget. Here you will find earrings, necklaces and bracelets in many styles from classic, historic, art deco, contemporary and minimalist to tribal and urban chic. By Sita Writer

FAST FASHION by Seashell Dench Tokyo, Japan. One of the most populated cities in the world. More than 13 million people share this beautiful space, where tradition and modernity live, hand in hand. One of the most inspirational cities for artists, like fashion designers. Japan, is the country of Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons (Rei Kawakubo), Junya Watanabe, Kenzo Takada to name a few. Rei Kawakubo herself is considered one of the most influential people in the fashion scene around the word; she is now 75 years old. Where did they all get inspiration? Easy. From the streets of Tokyo; Japanese designers take the urban life of a non-stop buzzing city, where fashion starts in the streets to the catwalks of high couture. There are so many ways to define the many urban styles found here and to complicate matters, not everyone agrees on exactly what that style is. Pastel Goth, for instance, seems to have started around 2010, on Tumblr. Regular people just took photos on what they were wearing in the street and just posted on social media. Some people say we shouldn’t confuse Pastel Goth with “creepy cute”, “nu soft” or even “grunge” because it is more of a light emo/scene look. And then, we have Nu Goth, which is definitely a Gothic style but considered a sub-genre. To dress in any of these styles is not only a fashion statement, but also a way of life. Youngsters wearing Nu Goth are interested in all types of Art, Philosophy, Music, Religion; it’s a cultural lifestyle for them a way of expression. Another example of Japanese fashion is Neo Gal style. Neo Gal is part Tokyo, Part Americana and it all started in 1990. For this look, Japanese girls wear more “western” style clothing like ripped jeans, a lot of accessories with bling and bleached hair.

A Neo Gal doesn’t really care about what other people think of their style. They are trendsetters. Some peeps may or may not follow, a Neo Gal don’t care either way. The forerunner of the Neo Gal look is Alisa Ueno, you can follow her on Instagram here (https://www.instagram.com/alisaueno/?hl=en) Visual Kei is another street style from Tokyo, and in this case, it started in musicians and bands and has been around since 1980. It’s quite flamboyant, mixing a lot of make up with a completely androgynous look. It has become a sub-culture; Visual Kei is quite similar to the Glam Rock style in the west. Actually, all of these Japanese street styles are connected to a way of life, a way of thinking and consequently, a way of behaving socially. “Tell me what you wear...” There are so many Japanese street trends that we can’t name them all here. However, we can’t forget Harajuku - that is where this all started Harajuku is actually a place in Tokyo, around the Harajuku station, between Shinjuku and Shibuya - the central fashion hub for young people in the eighties. Some people say Harajuku is for the Japanese the same as Les Champs Elisées is to the French. In the eighties and nineties, young people started to dress in “Harajuku style”, named after the area that they hung out in. Harajuku came to be considered a fashion style, per se. The diversity of Tokyo, the fluidity of its streets and the variety of lifestyles has created many sub-genres of Japanese urban style that it’s almost impossible to name them all! Plus not everyone agrees on what defines this style. What is really beautiful to see is this diversity and urban fashion presenting itself as the starting point to some of the best runways in the world. Most of this happens in the old city of Edo - the former name of Tokyo, Japan - one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

Design is a vital component to the enrichment of our everyday lives. Japan has a very rich history and culture of design, and I feel it is a very important dialogue to open and keep evolving. Issey Miyake This spring and summer journey with us into the ever-changing street scene of Japanese fashion trends. It is famous around the globe! The look ranges from over the top cute with pops of color to extreme darkness. It surprises and delights us with the unexpected. There are clothes that pull from ancient Japanese fairy tales and those that reflect a dark cyber future. And, then there is the “genderless” look of the Kawaii Boys and genderless Kei. This season’s treasure trove of trends includes everything from genderless Kei and Kawaii to outfits that play with proportions and textures that cast a shadowy dark tale that is mysterious and magical. Dramatic accessories and interesting make up with lavish tattoos make this look pop. Sweet and cute, dark and evocative, genderless and free spirited – the carefree fashion looks of Japanese street culture with its unexpected textiles and proportions are just begging to be worn!
