Girl Scout’s Gold Award Project Helps People with Special Needs

Shaye Bundonis, a 12th grader from Long Hill, created a unique project to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. She adapted over 30 electronic toys to make them into switch accessible ones for children and adults with special needs. Shaye says that regular toys often have small buttons, which can be hard for people with special needs to operate.

She built battery interceptors by using tin foil and wire, tucking them into the battery compartments, and creating a large button for access. She then taught a group of Girl Scouts how to create the switches, and donated the extra switches and instructions, with the toys, so another toy with a switch could be made. The toys were donated to schools in Long Hill and Berkeley Heights, 1st CP of NJ, and Matheny. ”It’s expensive for schools to buy toys with adaptable switches, so it made me feel good to be able to make a difference,” says Shaye.

Juxtapose Gallery Helps Bring Awareness to Ovarian Cancer

Danielle Auriemma-D’Amico of Long Hill, who owns a virtual fine art, custom framing, art services and workshops business called Juxtapose Gallery, donated 10% of her September sales to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA). She does so every September, in honor of her sister-in-law Donna Carle, who, at 44, passed away from the disease almost 15 years ago. In doing so, Danielle hopes to raise awareness to this “silent killer.” Recently, to mark the 15-year anniversary, Danielle ran a race for Ovarian Cancer with two of Donna’s three children, Rebecca and Melissa, who are strong advocates and have a goal of running 15 races this year to raise $15,000 for OCRA. “I saw what my husband’s family went through when Donna was sick, and making this yearly donation helps me to raise awareness and make a difference,” says Danielle. Millington Resident is Giving Back!

Payton Carn, 19, of Millington, recently started her own business and is already giving back! Payton’s Market, an online, shelf-stable grocery store, offers over 800 items to stock your pantry. Local residents can shop from home and have their orders delivered right to their doors. Pumpkin Patch With a Purpose Helps Those Who Need it Most

The annual Pumpkin Patch With a Purpose at Wyoming Presbyterian Church in Millburn starts on October 8. One hundred percent of all sales will benefit over 12 non-profits around the world, with money also going back to the Navajo Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico, which is where the pumpkins were grown and purchased. Each year, the Pumpkin Patch makes about $30,000, and the money helps the homeless, those suffering from food insecurity, refugees needing disaster assistance, people in Haiti needing homes, and provides scholarships for inner city children to attend camp, and more.

Wyoming’s Pastor, The Rev. Heather Woodworth Brannon, says she enjoys holding this yearly event, where the entire front lawn is filled with pumpkins. “Our church is passionate about sharing God’s love with our neighbors. This fundraiser is a great way to bring people together, regardless of their faith, to help those who are struggling so that they can survive and flourish, too,” she says. Bike Program for Girls

Ages 5+ of All Abilities to Hold 8-Week Session This Fall

Girls in Gear, a nonprofit that offers an 8-week socialemotional learning program blending life skills with bike skills in a non-competitive environment for girls ages 5+ of all riding abilities, has opened up registration at Lewis Morris Park in Morristown, and across New Jersey. In Morristown, sessions meet on Sundays at 9 am for girls ages 5-7 and at 10:30 am for girls ages 8-10. There will also be a “Learn to Ride Clinic” on October 14, at the same location. Bikes and helmets are provided for all who need them as part of a noquestions-asked scholarship policy.

“I’m immensely proud of what we do, and our growth is a testament to the incredible people who help and support the program. We are creating spaces for girls to be the boldest versions of themselves they can be, on and off their bikes,” says founder Gabrielle Rossi.

GoFundMe Campaign Sends Much Needed Items to Ghana

One day of studying at the New Providence Library six years ago changed the course of Vivianne Obro-Adadevoh’s life. She saw a Facebook post that said a village in Ghana, where Vivianne, who has lived in the US for 30 years, grew up, was in need. She went to the front desk to see if they would donate books. They said, “Yes,” and have continued to hold collections and donate books, toys, and recently furniture for the past six years.

Vivianne sends the items to rural communities and schools where people are the poorest. She says, “I hate to see people throw things away because what they see as garbage is considered treasure in Ghana.”

Recently, Vivianne, who uses her own money to ship everything to Ghana, started a GoFundMe campaign at bit.ly/3EA03fG, so she can continue her charitable work. She can be contacted for donations at: vidadevor@yahoo.com.

THE FORTNIGHTLY CLUB of Summit Gives Back in Many Ways

TThe Fortnightly Club of Summit was founded in 1893 by the wife of Summit’s first mayor and met on a fortnight (every fourteen nights). The Club’s commitment to charitable causes has not wavered since its inception and has contributed millions of dollars to the community, and multiple millions of volunteer hours and in-kind donations over the course of its existence.

Today, The Fortnightly Club continues to be dedicated to volunteerism, fundraising, outreach, community service, and scholarship. The Club offers its membership volunteer opportunities, book groups, theater trips, day trips, a movie club, a neighborhood walking club, Mah Jong, camaraderie, and general meetings on the second Wednesday of the month.

In addition, the Club has created, run, supported, or donated to:

• Area Baby Center (ABC) families with Thanksgiving dinners.

• Jersey Battered Women’s’ Service (JBWS) with holiday gifts and gift cards.

• The Club’s Mitten Tree recipients include Bridges Outreach, GRACE (Giving and Receiving Assistance for our Community Essentials), 125 Summit Avenue fire victims, YWCA Union County Family Justice Center for domestic family victims, Summit Warm Hearts, and LINC (Linking Initiative for Neighborhood Change) run out of New Providence United Methodist Church.

• They have made hundreds of lunches for Bridges Outreach.

• Other events include 4th & 5th Grade Spelling Bees, Adopt-a-Class, Tot Trot, Travel Auction, luncheons, and themed fundraisers.

The Fortnightly Club members also enjoy helping young women as they begin their adult lives by offering college scholarships to women who are residents of Summit planning to attend a four-year college, a two-year college, or trade school. The awards are based on academic merit, community service, and financial need.

Kate Morrison, who has been a member of the Club for seven years, says she really enjoys being part of the Club as it has afforded her lasting friendships, great volunteer opportunities, fun trips, and so much more.

The Club also owns, and is steward of, Twin Maples, which is where the Club holds meetings. Twin Maples opens its doors to the public as a featured site on Union County’s Four Centuries in a Weekend tour, which will be October 21-22 this year. In addition, Twin Maples is on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.

New members are always welcome! Members are from Summit and surrounding towns including New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Chatham, Short Hills and more.

Short Hills Teen Launches SOCIAL CHANGE CAMPAIGN

SSydney Fingerman of Short Hills, a 12th grader at Millburn High School, is on a quest to create social change through her own personal connections. This past year, she started an initiative called, “Hi My Name Is…,” where she makes an effort to bring creativity to the unhoused community.

When Sydney went on a Civil Rights trip to Washington D.C. in 2017, she listened to a lecture given by one of the program directors at the National Coalition for the Homeless that moved her so much—it changed her life. He shared that he had been homeless for many, many years and that one of the most painful things was never hearing anyone call him by his name. She helped make care packages to deliver to what D.C. residents refer to as “Homeless Park.” She says it was the

saddest thing she ever saw. So, while she walked around handing out care packages, she made sure to introduce herself, and acknowledge everyone she met by saying, “Hi, my name is Sydney. What’s your name?” She says that many of the people she met started to cry when she did this—and at this moment, she decided to do this for the rest of her life.

Recently, she started visiting Isaiah House in East Orange to lead weekly journaling workshops and creative sessions. Sydney had over 30 residents attend her first workshop; they had a great time, and she says it made her happy to take the time to get to know them all. The writing prompt was: What is your name, who are you, and what does your name mean to you?

“This isn’t just another volunteer activity for me,” says Sydney. “They all wanted to share their writing with me; I was so touched. I felt like I really reached them.”

Aside from leading these workshops, Sydney has also created a collection of clothing which she has sold to raise money to renovate a space at Isaiah House. After renovations, this will become a creative outlet for residents of all ages.

ART IN THE PARK

Rose Squared Art Shows will showcase the original art works of over 150 makers of fine art and fine crafts. Essex County Brookdale Park will be turned into an outdoor art gallery with a wide variety of fabulous art for the home and body. Among the items for purchase will be one-of-akind paintings, ceramics, glass, wood, art jewelry and clothing, photography, sculptures, and mixed media and artisanal food to take home.

This beautiful park offers unlimited customer field parking at the show. The event is free to the public rain or shine.

Booklovers Will Unite at the 10th Annual Morristown Festival of Books

Calling all bibliophiles, a two-day Book Festival is taking place this fall featuring in-person talks by world-class authors across every genre. Since its inception, the 10th Annual Morristown Festival of Books has established itself among the top book festivals nationwide, drawing thousands of annual attendees.

Speakeasy Cabaret Club Annual Fundraiser

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts (METC) will host its annual benefit dinner. Taking youback to a bygone era, this mysterious and sophisticated evening at their Speakeasy Cabaret Club will include great food, signature cocktails, and a night filled featuring music by the Jerry Vezza Jazz Trio. The METC is thrilled to announce that Nancy Solomon of WNYC Radio will be the guest speaker. A New Jersey resident since 2001, Nancy is a senior reporter and the founding managing editor of New Jersey Public Radio, covering all topics in New Jersey. The museum will also be honoring two of their long-serving Trustees, Thomas H. Judd and Rodger Herrigel. The community is invited to celebrate with them as they raise funds to provide essential educational programming for students in New Jersey as well as help us preserve our historic building. Funding support for METC’s educational scholarship program will be raised through a silent auction, wine pull, and their special “Windows of Opportunity.” Similar to a Giving Tree, “Windows of Opportunity” allows guests to choose a level of support for their programs for schools, senior adult facilities, and organizations that serve people living with disabilities.

Mount St. Dominic Academy Starts the School Year Off With Book Club Discussions

MMount St. Dominic Academy, a four-year private Catholic college preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12, located in Caldwell, ended the first day of school on a high note with Book Club discussions about the books they chose for summer reading. The groups comprised faculty and students in all grades. There were 14 fiction and non-fiction books to choose from, with the goals of discovering new ideas, developing perspectives, expanding empathy, and of course –having fun!

Director of School and College Counseling Linda Grancagnolo, who led a discussion group, said “It was a perfect way to discuss summer reading. The informal setting allowed the students to really share their thoughts.”

The fiction books ran the gamut from American-Born Chinese, by Gene Yang (graphic novel); The Poet X, by Elizabeth Acevedo (Narrative Verse); Honor, by Thrity Umrigar; Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, by Benjamin Alire Saenz; and Lessons in Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus; to The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri.

The non-fiction choices included Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi; From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her Island, by Lorna Goodison; Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson (Narrative Verse); Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, by Trevor Noah; Macbeth in Harlem: Black Theater in America from the beginning to Raisin in the Sun, by Clifford Mason; America Is in the Heart, by Carlos Bulosan; I Was Their American Dream, by Malaka Gharib (a graphic novel); and Crying in H Mart: A Memoir, by Michelle Zauner.

The Book Club was the brainchild of Principal Laura Hollenbaugh who planned to use the time as a community building and ice-breaking exercise. It was also an opportunity for students across grade levels and faculty who might not regularly interact with one another to get to know each other.

“This was an opportunity for us to build community through conversation, meeting in small groups to explore the experiences and identities presented in the books we’d selected. These discussions gave students and adults alike the opportunity to contribute their unique perspectives and interpretations of texts, and to further develop our appreciation of and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Allowing for choice in the process resulted in meaningful participation and lively discussion!” said Principal Hollenbaugh.

The conversations, some led by faculty and others by senior students, were lively and at times serious. However, one thing was for sure – everyone needed more than an hour to unpack their thoughts. Luckily, all students will get the chance to do so in the coming weeks as they perform critical thinking exercises and analysis on their books of choice during upcoming classes.

“Beautiful hair is just the beginning,” avow Cindi Galiher and Kathy Korab, owners of Glaze Salon. In five years, they’ve built a viable, full-service salon that provides top hairstyling, coloring, and the latest hair treatments.

The owners are ecstatic about celebrating their five-year milestone. “Through hard work and perseverance, we survived Covid,” explains Galiher. The salon opened in September 2018. While enjoying its initial growth, the mandated Covid lockdown was enacted in March 2020. Always focused on customer care, clients could pick up Emergency Hair Color Kits matched to their color to keep the gray at bay during the initial lockdown. Glaze underwent a renovation in 2019 with the needs of clients and staff in mind. A dedicated hair coloring station and a room specifically for Brazilian blowouts exist.

TED PAPOULAS When The Mundane Becomes Magical

Growing up as a kid in Garden City, Long Island, the son of a mother who was always making art, he was always encouraged to pursue the academics. And as such found himself at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute studying computer science. It was there that he started painting popular album covers on fellow students dorm room walls. After only one year, another direction called to Papoulas and he transferred to the Art School at the Pratt Institute. After completing his studies there, it wasn’t long until he had full schedule of free-lance illustration assignments and was ensconced in a life in Brooklyn. Combining computer savvy an entrepreneurial bent, and his artistic skills he started a series of digital consulting firms.

It was in 1998 that he began to paint in earnest, and began to exhibit. Dividing his time between a very busy digital consulting career, and his personal painting projects, with a wife and daughters in 2014 he moved from Brooklyn to Montclair where he manages to also find time for music, and for using his large collection of stereo photography equipment.

In his painting Fifth Avenue, a 30x40 inch gouache under acrylic painting on canvas, we immediately feel like we’re crossing this busy thoroughfare and are engulfed by the relentless traffic. It’s impossible not to sense that you are immediately transported into Manhattan and in this little moment, you are somehow in the middle of a very big moment when looking at this work.

Every detail in this painting is perfect and we find ourselves temporarily engulfed in this world, with a Jones for a regular and a buttered roll to go.

Look at Still Life With Ketchup, a 6x6 inch gouache under acrylic on wood panel. In this tiny microcosm of diner life, once again Papoulas has drawn our eyes to the mundane, and made it anything but. His on-going love with Brooklyn coffee shops calls us to celebrate the ordinary. The quality of his paintings is such that in the portrait of Papoulas accompanying this article a similar painting of different condiments on his desk appears at first glance to be, the real thing.

In his paintings he reminds up to stop and look at our surroundings, oft times the things we miss, or take for granted in our busy days, and at at the same time once again, takes us on a journey to someplace we’ve been in our own lives and in that process perhaps we remember those forgotten moments. Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Places Final Steel Beam for New Cancer Center Building

CCooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, raised the final steel beam on its freestanding Cancer Center, now under construction. Cancer survivors, oncology department staff, board members, and donors added their signatures to the steel beam during morning and evening ceremonies — leaving their permanent mark on the five-story, 137,000-squarefoot facility.

Scheduled for 2025 completion, the $225-million outpatient facility on CBMC’s Livingston campus will serve as the northern hub for the integrated oncology services offered by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is a regional leader in cancer care, and with the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, we are setting a new standard for top-quality care,” said Richard L. LLast Sunday my family and I drove up to the Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve (141 Clove Road, Montague NJ). The sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of abused, neglected, and otherwise discarded farmed animals. I was so impressed with the tour and impact it had on my family I decided to sit down and speak to Peter Nussbaum who is the co-founder of the sanctuary to let people know about this amazing place and also get a glimpse of the magic that he’s brought to so many lives.

Barry Farber: How did all this get started?

Peter Nussbaum: My wife and I had a tremendous interest in animal rights and caring for animals but our caring for animals consisted of cats and dogs. Then one day my wife convinced me that it would be a good idea to adopt two roosters, and we quickly realized that they were no different than our dogs and cats. They became part of our family, So, two roosters became five roosters, 15 chickens became 100 chickens, and before you know it, we became a rescue farm, taking in not only chickens but all sorts of farmed animals from abuse, abandonment, and neglect. That was back in 2013 when we started.

BF: What inspired me as I took the tour of your sanctuary is that it wasn’t just the amazing interactions between the people and the animals but the stories you told that connected the whole sanctuary to me. Could you please tell me a story our readers would appreciate?

PN: One of our 250 animals is a large breed industrial size pig who weighs 800 pounds. His name is Pecan. He came to

us from Rutgers University back in 2016. He was part of an agricultural school program where they teach students how to raise livestock. An agricultural student thought of pigs as bacon, pork chops and ham. She was assigned to care for pecan, to raise him, and feed him. Then she was horrified when she found out that the pigs from the program eventually get shipped off and become bacon, pork chops and ham. She reached out to us and asked us if we could take Pecan and we said yes. She was relieved but the school was unwilling to let Pecan come to us. So, what she and her friends and family did is they went to the livestock auction. They found out when Pecan was being shipped off. They went and made sure they were the highest bidder. When she saw Pecan in the middle of all the other pigs,she yelled his name and he came pushing through the crowd and came right up to her and she said, don’t worry you’re coming home with these people and she pointed to my wife. Pecan back to us in 2016. We have tons of stories like that. Pecan is our largest pig. Spends his days foraging, sunbathing and getting belly rubs.

BF: Tell me about the intelligence of pigs.

PN: Pigs are known for decorating their houses. If there are flowers on a pigs pasture the pigs will very often pick the flowers and bring them into their house. They’re immaculate animals. The one farm animal that would never in a million years go to the bathroom where they sleep.

BF: Your profession is an attorney specializing in trademarks and intellectual property and now you have this amazing accomplishment giving back to the animals and also the people who visit the sanctuary. What is your definition of success today?

PN: I often tell people that the Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done financially but by far the best thing I have ever done. I’ve never been happier or more resolved to the fact that I’m doing something that matters and giving people an opportunity to connect with the animals. Thousands of these people come through and some of them are meeting these animals for the first time.
