Girl Scout’s Gold Award Project Helps People with Special Needs
Shaye Bundonis, a 12th grader from Long Hill, created a unique project to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. She adapted over 30 electronic toys to make them into switch accessible ones for children and adults with special needs. Shaye says that regular toys often have small buttons, which can be hard for people with special needs to operate.
She built battery interceptors by using tin foil and wire, tucking them into the battery compartments, and creating a large button for access. She then taught a group of Girl Scouts how to create the switches, and donated the extra switches and instructions, with the toys, so another toy with a switch could be made. The toys were donated to schools in Long Hill and Berkeley Heights, 1st CP of NJ, and Matheny. ”It’s expensive for schools to buy toys with adaptable switches, so it made me feel good to be able to make a difference,” says Shaye.
Juxtapose Gallery Helps Bring Awareness to Ovarian Cancer
Danielle Auriemma-D’Amico of Long Hill, who owns a virtual fine art, custom framing, art services and workshops business called Juxtapose Gallery, donated 10% of her September sales to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA). She does so every September, in honor of her sister-in-law Donna Carle, who, at 44, passed away from the disease almost 15 years ago. In doing so, Danielle hopes to raise awareness to this “silent killer.” Recently, to mark the 15-year anniversary, Danielle ran a race for Ovarian Cancer with two of Donna’s three children, Rebecca and Melissa, who are strong advocates and have a goal of running 15 races this year to raise $15,000 for OCRA. “I saw what my husband’s family went through when Donna was sick, and making this yearly donation helps me to raise awareness and make a difference,” says Danielle. For more information, go to: juxtaposegallery.com.
Millington Resident is Giving Back!
Payton Carn, 19, of Millington, recently started her own business and is already giving back! Payton’s Market, an online, shelf-stable grocery store, offers over 800 items to stock your pantry. Local residents can shop from home and have their orders delivered right to their doors. The website makes it easy to shop by category, dietary lifestyle, and Payton even includes monthly recipes for her customers.
Payton wants your everyday purchases to mean something to the community. Payton’s Market gives back to help raise money for local communities. Payton is currently collaborating with schools, churches, sports teams, and charities, and donating at least 10% of the sales, not the profit, to help raise funds. If you are looking for a unique fundraising opportunity, you can contact Payton at www.paytonsmarket.com.
“It’s the little things we do that make a difference,” says Payton. “Make your difference at Payton’s Market.”

Pumpkin Patch With a Purpose Helps Those Who Need it Most
The annual Pumpkin Patch With a Purpose at Wyoming Presbyterian Church in Millburn starts on October 8. One hundred percent of all sales will benefit over 12 non-profits around the world, with money also going back to the Navajo Reservation in Farmington, New Mexico, which is where the pumpkins were grown and purchased. Each year, the Pumpkin Patch makes about $30,000, and the money helps the homeless, those suffering from food insecurity, refugees needing disaster assistance, people in Haiti needing homes, and provides scholarships for inner city children to attend camp, and more.
Wyoming’s Pastor, The Rev. Heather Woodworth Brannon, says she enjoys holding this yearly event, where the entire front lawn is filled with pumpkins. “Our church is passionate about sharing God’s love with our neighbors. This fundraiser is a great way to bring people together, regardless of their faith, to help those who are struggling so that they can survive and flourish, too,” she says. Bike Program for Girls
Ages 5+ of All Abilities to Hold 8-Week Session This Fall
Girls in Gear, a nonprofit that offers an 8-week socialemotional learning program blending life skills with bike skills in a non-competitive environment for girls ages 5+ of all riding abilities, has opened up registration at Lewis Morris Park in Morristown, and across New Jersey. In Morristown, sessions meet on Sundays at 9 am for girls ages 5-7 and at 10:30 am for girls ages 8-10. There will also be a “Learn to Ride Clinic” on October 14, at the same location. Bikes and helmets are provided for all who need them as part of a noquestions-asked scholarship policy.
“I’m immensely proud of what we do, and our growth is a testament to the incredible people who help and support the program. We are creating spaces for girls to be the boldest versions of themselves they can be, on and off their bikes,” says founder Gabrielle Rossi.

GoFundMe Campaign Sends Much Needed Items to Ghana
One day of studying at the New Providence Library six years ago changed the course of Vivianne Obro-Adadevoh’s life. She saw a Facebook post that said a village in Ghana, where Vivianne, who has lived in the US for 30 years, grew up, was in need. She went to the front desk to see if they would donate books. They said, “Yes,” and have continued to hold collections and donate books, toys, and recently furniture for the past six years.
Vivianne sends the items to rural communities and schools where people are the poorest. She says, “I hate to see people throw things away because what they see as garbage is considered treasure in Ghana.”
Recently, Vivianne, who uses her own money to ship everything to Ghana, started a GoFundMe campaign at bit.ly/3EA03fG, so she can continue her charitable work. She can be contacted for donations at: vidadevor@yahoo.com.

Short Hills Teen Launches SOCIAL CHANGE CAMPAIGN
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
SSydney Fingerman of Short Hills, a 12th grader at Millburn High School, is on a quest to create social change through her own personal connections. This past year, she started an initiative called, “Hi My Name Is…,” where she makes an effort to bring creativity to the unhoused community.
When Sydney went on a Civil Rights trip to Washington D.C. in 2017, she listened to a lecture given by one of the program directors at the National Coalition for the Homeless that moved her so much—it changed her life. He shared that he had been homeless for many, many years and that one of the most painful things was never hearing anyone call him by his name. She helped make care packages to deliver to what D.C. residents refer to as “Homeless Park.” She says it was the
saddest thing she ever saw. So, while she walked around handing out care packages, she made sure to introduce herself, and acknowledge everyone she met by saying, “Hi, my name is Sydney. What’s your name?” She says that many of the people she met started to cry when she did this—and at this moment, she decided to do this for the rest of her life.
Recently, she started visiting Isaiah House in East Orange to lead weekly journaling workshops and creative sessions. Sydney had over 30 residents attend her first workshop; they had a great time, and she says it made her happy to take the time to get to know them all. The writing prompt was: What is your name, who are you, and what does your name mean to you?
“This isn’t just another volunteer activity for me,” says Sydney. “They all wanted to share their writing with me; I was so touched. I felt like I really reached them.”
Aside from leading these workshops, Sydney has also created a collection of clothing which she has sold to raise money to renovate a space at Isaiah House. After renovations, this will become a creative outlet for residents of all ages.

Mount St. Dominic Academy Starts the School Year Off With Book Club Discussions
MMount St. Dominic Academy, a four-year private Catholic college preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12, located in Caldwell, ended the first day of school on a high note with Book Club discussions about the books they chose for summer reading. The groups comprised faculty and students in all grades. There were 14 fiction and non-fiction books to choose from, with the goals of discovering new ideas, developing perspectives, expanding empathy, and of course –having fun!
Director of School and College Counseling Linda Grancagnolo, who led a discussion group, said “It was a perfect way to discuss summer reading. The informal setting allowed the students to really share their thoughts.”
The fiction books ran the gamut from American-Born Chinese, by Gene Yang (graphic novel); The Poet X, by Elizabeth Acevedo (Narrative Verse); Honor, by Thrity Umrigar; Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, by Benjamin Alire Saenz; and Lessons in Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus; to The Namesake, by Jhumpa Lahiri.
The non-fiction choices included Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X Kendi; From Harvey River: A Memoir of My Mother and Her Island, by Lorna Goodison; Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson (Narrative Verse); Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, by Trevor Noah; Macbeth in Harlem: Black Theater in America from the beginning to Raisin in the Sun, by Clifford Mason; America Is in the Heart, by Carlos Bulosan; I Was Their American Dream, by Malaka Gharib (a graphic novel); and Crying in H Mart: A Memoir, by Michelle Zauner.
The Book Club was the brainchild of Principal Laura Hollenbaugh who planned to use the time as a community building and ice-breaking exercise. It was also an opportunity for students across grade levels and faculty who might not regularly interact with one another to get to know each other.
“This was an opportunity for us to build community through conversation, meeting in small groups to explore the experiences and identities presented in the books we’d selected. These discussions gave students and adults alike the opportunity to contribute their unique perspectives and interpretations of texts, and to further develop our appreciation of and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Allowing for choice in the process resulted in meaningful participation and lively discussion!” said Principal Hollenbaugh.
The conversations, some led by faculty and others by senior students, were lively and at times serious. However, one thing was for sure – everyone needed more than an hour to unpack their thoughts. Luckily, all students will get the chance to do so in the coming weeks as they perform critical thinking exercises and analysis on their books of choice during upcoming classes.

WITH A VISIT TO GLAZE SALON
BBY CYNTHIA BURNS, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
“Beautiful hair is just the beginning,” avow Cindi Galiher and Kathy Korab, owners of Glaze Salon. In five years, they’ve built a viable, full-service salon that provides top hairstyling, coloring, and the latest hair treatments.
The owners are ecstatic about celebrating their five-year milestone. “Through hard work and perseverance, we survived Covid,” explains Galiher. The salon opened in September 2018. While enjoying its initial growth, the mandated Covid lockdown was enacted in March 2020. Always focused on customer care, clients could pick up Emergency Hair Color Kits matched to their color to keep the gray at bay during the initial lockdown. Glaze underwent a renovation in 2019 with the needs of clients and staff in mind. A dedicated hair coloring station and a room specifically for Brazilian blowouts exist.
“A trip to Glaze is a whole experience,” says Galiher. The goal is for clients to decompress and enjoy. Think ambiance. Clients can enjoy a cappuccino from the coffee bar and, on Saturdays, a mimosa. Glaze carries a selection of jewelry, such as Little Words Project ®, scarves, and diffusers by Antica Farmacista and LAFCO New York, for clients who need a gift or a treat for themselves.

Popular among clients, notes Galiher, are Balayage, a freehand coloring technique in which color is painted directly onto sections of hair, and Ombré, a more dramatic color effect where hair is split into contrasting color sections and gradually blended. Additional services include highlights, lash extensions, eyelash tinting, manicures and waxing.
To maintain that just-styled look, stylists suggest a regimen based on their client’s hair’s condition, texture, and color. Glaze is a leading purveyor of premier shampoos, conditioners, and hair care products. Product lines include Oribe, Enjoy, Wow & Leaf and Flower.
Galiher, who worked in the cosmetics industry for more than 20 years, partnered with Korab, an expert stylist, to create Glaze. Galiher serves as the business manager, and Korab is the head stylist. Many of their stylists have more than 20 years of experience. “These professionals know all the ins and outs,” says Galiher. “They keep current on the latest trends and products by attending classes.” They also do repair work. “We work with clients who have had a haircut or color elsewhere and are not pleased with the results.”

TED PAPOULAS When The Mundane Becomes Magical
Growing up as a kid in Garden City, Long Island, the son of a mother who was always making art, he was always encouraged to pursue the academics. And as such found himself at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute studying computer science. It was there that he started painting popular album covers on fellow students dorm room walls. After only one year, another direction called to Papoulas and he transferred to the Art School at the Pratt Institute. After completing his studies there, it wasn’t long until he had full schedule of free-lance illustration assignments and was ensconced in a life in Brooklyn. Combining computer savvy an entrepreneurial bent, and his artistic skills he started a series of digital consulting firms.
It was in 1998 that he began to paint in earnest, and began to exhibit. Dividing his time between a very busy digital consulting career, and his personal painting projects, with a wife and daughters in 2014 he moved from Brooklyn to Montclair where he manages to also find time for music, and for using his large collection of stereo photography equipment.
In his painting Fifth Avenue, a 30x40 inch gouache under acrylic painting on canvas, we immediately feel like we’re crossing this busy thoroughfare and are engulfed by the relentless traffic. It’s impossible not to sense that you are immediately transported into Manhattan and in this little moment, you are somehow in the middle of a very big moment when looking at this work.

Coffee Shop, 7.5”x10” gouache under acrylic on illustration board painting
Fifth Avenue, 30”x40” gouache under acrylic painting on canvas
In Coffee Shop, a 7.5x10 inch gouache under acrylic on illustration board painting, Papoulas has captured the hubbub of Dizzy’s, his favorite Brooklyn coffee shop. Every detail in this painting is perfect and we find ourselves temporarily engulfed in this world, with a Jones for a regular and a buttered roll to go.
Look at Still Life With Ketchup, a 6x6 inch gouache under acrylic on wood panel. In this tiny microcosm of diner life, once again Papoulas has drawn our eyes to the mundane, and made it anything but. His on-going love with Brooklyn coffee shops calls us to celebrate the ordinary. The quality of his paintings is such that in the portrait of Papoulas accompanying this article a similar painting of different condiments on his desk appears at first glance to be, the real thing.
In his paintings he reminds up to stop and look at our surroundings, oft times the things we miss, or take for granted in our busy days, and at at the same time once again, takes us on a journey to someplace we’ve been in our own lives and in that process perhaps we remember those forgotten moments. See more of his remarkable work on his website.

BRINGING YOUR VISION TO LIFE
Dorothy Goldberg wanted to bring clients’ visions to life more than 50 years ago when she established Creative Wallcoverings and Interiors.
Her daughter, Rachel Kapner, joined the company when she was in her early twenties, eager to learn the ropes and continue the company’s mission. Today, Rachel is President of CWI Design, and the company has ten employees, wellversed in every aspect of interior design.
CWI Design is a full-service home design company that creates inspiring and inviting spaces. With a vast array of products and services, from custom-made drapes to artwork to wallpapering and furniture accents, CWI Design is with the project from inception to finish. Rachel and her design team complete each project with love. “I often live vicariously through my clients. If my clients love the colors or designs, I love it too,” she says. Relationships with clients and their families are paramount. Three generations of families have enjoyed the artistic endeavors of CWI Design.
Rachel is well-known for her ceiling designs. In many homes, she explains, “The ceiling is often the forgotten wall.” Most people typically leave the wall white or plain. However, a beautiful and unique ceiling can add depth and dimension to the room. “Adding a pattern or texture wallcovering, painting the ceiling in a contrast color, or even adding wood trim design can transform the room and add the feeling of additional height,” she says.
While she recalls her many ceiling designs fondly, one has left an indelible mark. Inspired by a plaster mold design from a European capital, she custom-designed a geometric wood pattern laid out and scaled to size, finishing it with paint to make the design stand out even more.
CWI Design supports several community events. One event is Mansion in May, which highlights their design work in a specific mansion. Also, CWI Design will
sponsor the Embrace Hope Gala on Friday, October 20, at 7pm. All proceeds will benefit the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation.
Rachel loves projects that allow her to be creative, especially those that present challenges. “I love projects that leave a mark on me,” she says.

How to Choose HARDWOOD FLOORS for Your Kitchen
Choosing the best hardwood floor for your kitchen involves considering both aesthetics and functionality. First, opt for hardwoods like oak, maple, or cherry, known for their durability and resistance to moisture. Engineered hardwoods are also a good choice due to their stability in varying humidity levels.
Consider the kitchen’s style when selecting the wood species and finish. Lighter woods like oak or maple create a timeless, airy look, while darker woods, such as walnut, add warmth and elegance. Matte or satin finishes are ideal for hiding wear and tear.
Ensure the hardwood’s thickness and quality meet your needs. Thicker planks withstand heavy foot traffic better, while higher-quality wood resists dents and scratches. Additionally, look for hardwoods with a high Janka hardness rating for enhanced durability.
Lastly, installation and maintenance should influence your decision. Prefinished hardwoods save time during installation, and a professional installation ensures longevity. Regular cleaning and periodic refinishing will help maintain the floor’s beauty.
By balancing style, durability, and maintenance considerations, you can

You Need a Home HVAC Maintenance Plan
Your heating and cooling system is one of the most critical investments in your home. It keeps you comfortable year-round. Yet, it can also be expensive to repair or replace if something goes wrong. That’s why it’s crucial to have an HVAC maintenance plan.
An HVAC maintenance plan is a contract with a qualified company, such as Air Group, that regularly inspects and cleans your system. Think of it as a yearly tuneup for your heating and cooling. They will check your system’s components, including the compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, and blower fan. They will also clean the air filter and coils and lubricate moving parts.
There are many benefits to having an HVAC maintenance plan. Here are a few:
PREVENT COSTLY BREAKDOWNS. Regular maintenance can identify and fix minor problems before they become major breakdowns. This can save you a lot of money in the long run.
EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR SYSTEM. Proper maintenance can help your HVAC system last longer. This means you will have to replace it less often, which can save you even more money.
IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY. A well-maintained HVAC system runs more efficiently, saving money on your energy bills.
select the perfect hardwood floor to complement your kitchen’s aesthetic and withstand the rigors of daily life.

Why You May Need Flood Insurance Outside a Flood Zone
As climate patterns fluctuate due to global warming, areas previously thought safe may become susceptible to flooding. Over 20% of flood claims arise from properties outside highrisk zones, underscoring floods’ unpredictable nature. Regular homeowners’ insurance often excludes coverage for:
Storm Surge: Rising seawater levels caused by storms can impact homes miles inland.
Overflow of Inland or Tidal Waters: Overflow from rivers, lakes, or other water bodies won’t be covered.
Runoff and Mudflow: Heavy rains causing runoff or mudflows necessitate flood insurance, though mudslides aren’t covered.
Melting Snow: Rapid snowmelt can unexpectedly flood certain areas.
Blocked Storm Drainage Systems: Local flooding due to clogged drainage systems is another often-overlooked risk.
Flood insurance is commonly associated with properties situated in designated flood zones. However, considering it is vital even if you’re outside such an area, primarily because many water-related events that could damage your home may not be covered by your standard homeowner’s policy.
Residing outside a flood zone might seem like an invitation to skip flood insurance, but this could be a costly oversight. To safeguard your assets and enjoy peace of mind, consider integrating flood insurance into your protective measures. It’s a prudent investment in an ever-changing world. Rand,
Considering Adding Millwork Before Painting Rooms in Your House
The transformative power of millwork cannot be understated when refreshing the aesthetic of a home. Wilber’s Home Improvement, a leader in both millwork and painting, offers insights into why homeowners should consider integrating millwork prior to painting.
Precision Edges
Adding millwork first means subsequent paint jobs will showcase clean, crisp edges. It negates the inconvenience of painting a room only to retouch or redo sections post millwork installations.
Damage Prevention
The installation process of millwork can sometimes lead to minor wall damages. Addressing these imperfections prior to painting guarantees a seamless finish.
Color Coordination
With millwork in its rightful place, selecting the ideal paint hue becomes more intuitive. Especially in spaces where the millwork serves as a key decorative element, it’s pivotal to establish a harmonious relationship between trim and wall colors.
Cost-Effective
Sidestepping the needless repetition of painted areas due to later millwork installations is both time and moneysaving.
Enhanced Aesthetics
Millwork adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. Be it crown molding, wainscoting, or custom cabinetry, these elements elevate the room’s ambience instantly.
Increased Home Value
High-quality millwork can boost a property’s market value. It provides both functional and decorative benefits that prospective buyers find appealing.
Personalization
Millwork offers homeowners the chance to customize their spaces. From modern to traditional designs, there’s a style to reflect every individual’s taste.

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Places Final Steel Beam for New Cancer Center Building
CCooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, raised the final steel beam on its freestanding Cancer Center, now under construction. Cancer survivors, oncology department staff, board members, and donors added their signatures to the steel beam during morning and evening ceremonies — leaving their permanent mark on the five-story, 137,000-squarefoot facility.
Scheduled for 2025 completion, the $225-million outpatient facility on CBMC’s Livingston campus will serve as the northern hub for the integrated oncology services offered by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is a regional leader in cancer care, and with the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, we are setting a new standard for top-quality care,” said Richard L. Davis, the hospital’s President and CEO. “With world-class amenities and a team that includes some of the top cancer specialists in the nation, the new Cancer Center will be a premier destination for patient-centered and research-driven cancer care in this region and beyond.”
“There is absolutely nothing more important to our community than having
best-in-class health care. The creation of a state-of-the-art cancer center here at CBMC represents one of the most significant events in this community and continues the ongoing growth and transformation of the Medical Center. Our vision of reimagining cancer care could not have occurred without the generosity and support of our many donors. We are grateful for their support and to everyone who has played a role in bringing this project to life,” said Bruce Schonbraun, Chair of the Board of Trustees at CBMC.
At the new Cancer Center, patients will have access to medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services under one roof, with amenities that include a wig and prosthetic studio, yoga classes, music therapy, and psychosocial support services. Private infusion rooms and short-term and extended-stay facilities will also be available.
“The Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is part of an overall major investment by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute to transform oncology services across the state including the construction of the Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, the state’s first freestanding cancer hospital,” said Steven K. Libutti, M.D., Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Senior Vice President, Oncology Services at RWJBarnabas Health.
The medical center’s partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey provides patients access to the most advanced treatment options, including clinical trials, CAR T-cell therapy, immunotherapy, and precision medicine. “This new Cancer Center will be synonymous with clinical excellence, collaboration, and a commitment to integrated care, delivered by world-class physicians and specialists,” said Michael Scoppetuolo, M.D., Medical Director of the Cancer Center at CBMC. “This is what the future of cancer care looks like in the Garden State and beyond. I’m honored to be a part of it.”
“Cancer treatment is getting more targeted and precise every year,” added Alison Grann, M.D., Chair of the hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology and the Northern Region Director of Radiation Oncology, RWJBarnabas Health. “The Cancer Center will provide patients with the most advanced multidisciplinary, patient-centric cancer care available in one central location.”

THE
SCIENCE OF
MEDITATION:
Exploring Its Benefits and Different Techniques
Meditation, deeply rooted in ancient traditions, has evolved with modern times. Today, digital aids like phone apps and videos make the practice more accessible than ever. These tools guide beginners, track progress, and offer diverse techniques to suit varied needs.
Scientific studies reveal meditation’s myriad benefits. It not only reduces stress and enhances concentration but also bolsters emotional well-being. From a neurological perspective, consistent meditators display increased thickness in brain regions linked to attention and sensory processing. Furthermore, there is diminished activity in the amygdala, a region of the brain primarily associated with emotional processes—the hub for stress and fear.
Meditation techniques vary widely. Mindfulness meditation teaches presence and observation of thoughts without judgment. Transcendental meditation involves mantra repetition to dive deep within. Guided visualization prompts a mental journey, while progressive relaxation focuses on physical awareness through muscle tension and relaxation.
Whether you’re using age-old methods or digital aids, the essence remains. The transformative potential of meditation is vast, impacting both the mind and body. As science delves deeper, it echoes ancient wisdom: in stillness, we find profound insight.
BOOSTING MENTAL AGILITY: The New Workout for Your Mind
In today’s fast-paced world, mental agility—the ability to think quickly, adapt, and respond to various situations— has become just as important as physical strength. Like muscles, our cognitive faculties require regular exercise to stay sharp and agile. Fortunately, boosting mental agility isn’t limited to intellectual elites; with simple practices, anyone can enhance their cognitive prowess.
One proven method is engaging in regular brain exercises. Activities like puzzles, crosswords, and strategy games can stretch our cognitive boundaries, encouraging the brain to forge new connections. Continuous learning, whether picking up a new
language or mastering a musical instrument, also enriches neural networks and promotes adaptability.
Physical exercise, surprisingly, also enhances mental flexibility. Cardiovascular workouts, in particular, boost blood flow to the brain, nourishing it with oxygen and essential nutrients. This not only supports brain health but also enhances cognitive functions.
In an age where change is the only constant, mental agility offers a competitive edge, enabling us to navigate life’s unpredictabilities with grace and resilience. Now is the time to prioritize cognitive fitness in our daily routines.

The Benefits of UNPLUGGING
In our hyper-connected digital age, people are increasingly feeling the strain of screen addiction. Hours fly by as we scroll through feeds, answer emails, and play endless games. The consequences are not just limited to tired eyes; studies have shown that excessive screen time can lead to insomnia, reduced productivity, and heightened stress. This has birthed the movement of “digital detox”— a conscious effort to reduce and manage screen time.
The benefits of unplugging are manifold. A digital detox can help restore sleep patterns, improve mental clarity, and foster deeper personal connections. Without the constant buzz of notifications, one can re-engage with the present moment and relish the beauty of the physical world.
Looking to embark on a digital detox? Here are some tips to get started:
Schedule Screen-Free Time:
Designate certain hours of the day, like the first hour after waking and the hour before bed, as screen-free.
Physical Activities:
Take up a hobby or sport that demands your physical presence.
Use Technology Wisely:
Install apps that track and limit your screen time or remind you to take breaks.
Unsubscribe and Unfollow:
Declutter your digital space by removing unnecessary emails and social media content.
Offline Connections:
Prioritize face-to-face interactions, rediscovering the joy of conversation without distractions.
A balanced digital life enhances our overall wellbeing, giving us time to focus on what truly matters. Embrace the detox and recharge your mind and soul.

TO THE RESCUE
BY BARRY FARBER
LLast Sunday my family and I drove up to the Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve (141 Clove Road, Montague NJ). The sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of abused, neglected, and otherwise discarded farmed animals. I was so impressed with the tour and impact it had on my family I decided to sit down and speak to Peter Nussbaum who is the co-founder of the sanctuary to let people know about this amazing place and also get a glimpse of the magic that he’s brought to so many lives.
Barry Farber: How did all this get started?
Peter Nussbaum: My wife and I had a tremendous interest in animal rights and caring for animals but our caring for animals consisted of cats and dogs. Then one day my wife convinced me that it would be a good idea to adopt two roosters, and we quickly realized that they were no different than our dogs and cats. They became part of our family, So, two roosters became five roosters, 15 chickens became 100 chickens, and before you know it, we became a rescue farm, taking in not only chickens but all sorts of farmed animals from abuse, abandonment, and neglect. That was back in 2013 when we started.
BF: What inspired me as I took the tour of your sanctuary is that it wasn’t just the amazing interactions between the people and the animals but the stories you told that connected the whole sanctuary to me. Could you please tell me a story our readers would appreciate?
PN: One of our 250 animals is a large breed industrial size pig who weighs 800 pounds. His name is Pecan. He came to
us from Rutgers University back in 2016. He was part of an agricultural school program where they teach students how to raise livestock. An agricultural student thought of pigs as bacon, pork chops and ham. She was assigned to care for pecan, to raise him, and feed him. Then she was horrified when she found out that the pigs from the program eventually get shipped off and become bacon, pork chops and ham. She reached out to us and asked us if we could take Pecan and we said yes. She was relieved but the school was unwilling to let Pecan come to us. So, what she and her friends and family did is they went to the livestock auction. They found out when Pecan was being shipped off. They went and made sure they were the highest bidder. When she saw Pecan in the middle of all the other pigs, she yelled his name and he came pushing through the crowd and came right up to her and she said, don’t worry you’re coming home with these people and she pointed to my wife. Then they brought

Pecan back to us in 2016. We have tons of stories like that. Pecan is our largest pig. Spends his days foraging, sunbathing and getting belly rubs.
BF: Tell me about the intelligence of pigs.
PN: Pigs are known for decorating their houses. If there are flowers on a pigs pasture the pigs will very often pick the flowers and bring them into their house. They’re immaculate animals. The one farm animal that would never in a million years go to the bathroom where they sleep.
BF: Your profession is an attorney specializing in trademarks and intellectual property and now you have this amazing accomplishment giving back to the animals and also the people who visit the sanctuary. What is your definition of success today?
PN: I often tell people that the Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done financially but by far the best thing I have ever done. I’ve never been happier or more resolved to the fact that I’m doing something that matters and giving people an opportunity to connect with the animals. Thousands of these people come through and some of them are meeting these animals for the first time.
