From Hopeless Pain to Freedom: MY LIFE-CHANGING JOURNEY

Finding Real Relief from Peripheral Neuropathy After Years of Struggle

LLiving with Peripheral Neuropathy can feel like your life is slipping away. For years, I didn’t even know what was happening to me. It started with just a little tingling and numbness, but it grew worse until even the simplest daily tasks became unbearable, says Sue S. from Paramus.

“I was afraid to go to a doctor because I didn’t want to be put on medications that might leave me feeling foggy or disconnected,” Sue recalls. “Eventually, I did visit a neurologist, and the diagnosis was Peripheral Neuropathy. I was prescribed Gabapentin, and at first, it seemed like a miracle.

Starting at just 100 milligrams, I felt so much better—like I had my life back. But relief didn’t last long. Within a month, I needed 200 milligrams, and just nine months later, I was taking 3,600 milligrams daily. While the medication dulled the pain, the side effects and dependency were overwhelming. My future felt bleak.”

When Neuropathy takes over your hands and feet, it’s not just pain—it’s a loss of independence. “I couldn’t touch a steering wheel, use a keyboard, or even hold my phone,” Sue explains. “The most routine tasks like dressing myself or washing dishes became excruciating. My once-active life shrank to almost nothing. I felt desperate.”

That’s when Sue discovered Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. “I’d heard about acupuncture but wasn’t sure if it would work. I was skeptical. Would it really help? Could it really make a difference? I decided to give it a try, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM doesn’t just treat symptoms— she takes the time to analyze your condition and craft a personalized treatment plan. Sue shares, “She identified the stage of Neuropathy I was in and began a tailored program that combined acupuncture with other complementary therapies. We started with three sessions a week for about a month, then reduced it to two sessions per week.”

From the beginning, Sue could tell that Dr. Aleksandra was different. “She’s professional, caring, and incredibly knowledgeable. While the treatments focused on my neuropathy, she also helped me with nutrition and other habits to improve my overall health. Her insights into ancient Chinese medicine, herbs, and lifestyle changes added so much to my recovery.”

At first, the changes were subtle. “It took about six weeks to notice the initial improvements, but then they started building. Slowly but surely, the pain began to fade. I used to wake up every morning in agony, immediately analyzing the pain the moment I opened my eyes. Now, I wake up pain-free. I start my day focused on what I can do instead of grieving over what I can’t,” Sue says.

One of the most incredible aspects of Sue’s journey has been reducing her dependency on medication. “When I started treatments, I was on 3,600 milligrams of gabapentin every day. Over time, I’ve been able to gradually lower that dose to just 300 milligrams—and I’m still tapering down. The freedom from both pain and heavy medication has given me my life back in ways I never thought possible.”

If you’re feeling hopeless, Sue understands. “When you’re living with neuropathy, it’s hard to believe that anything can help. But I can tell you firsthand: Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic’s treatments are not a gimmick. They’re not a quick fix or a false promise. They genuinely care about their patients and are committed to helping them heal.”

Sue acknowledges how easy it is to feel skeptical in today’s world. “There are so many people who take advantage of those who are vulnerable, offering false hope for a price. I felt that way, too. But this is the real deal. They’re skilled, compassionate, and dedicated to their work.”

Thanks to Dr. Aleksandra, Sue has regained not just physical relief but emotional peace. “I can enjoy life again. Tasks that once felt impossible are now manageable, and I no longer dread the future. I believe their expertise extends far beyond neuropathy—there are so many areas they can help with.”

If you’re struggling with neuropathy and feel like you’ve tried everything, Sue urges you not to give up. “There is hope. Take that first step and see what’s possible.”

Don’t let Neuropathy define your life any longer. Contact Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine today at 973-444-8932 or visit www.SashaAcupuncture.com to schedule your consultation. Rediscover freedom, relief, and a brighter future.

Crafting Magic: How One Woodworker Keeps Tradition Alive in Caldwell

In an era where true craftsmen are becoming rare, Danny Birnbaum, of Livingston, stands out with Birnbaum Woodworks, which is located in Caldwell. As a professional custom furniture maker since 2002, Danny creates everything from chairs and dining tables to custom-made cabinetry, built-ins and unique wall paneling. Danny’s move to bustling Bloomfield Avenue has grown his business from an established name amongst decorators, designers, and architects to now include walk-in traffic from the local community. Collaborating with the customers, a sketch, magazine picture, or blueprints Danny brings clients’ visions to life with meticulous craftsmanship, incorporating everything from unique wood choices to metal detailing. His shop is a hands-on workspace where customers can see every step of the creative process, bypassing flashy showrooms for the hum of saws and scent of freshly cut wood. For Danny, each day at the woodshop offers a chance to craft something extraordinary, blending tradition with modern creativity.

Ellen’s artistic journey includes illustrating children’s books and showcasing her work globally, including a traveling exhibition in China. With each project, she continues to explore the deep connection between artist and subject. To see some of her work, go to: EllenEaglePortraits.com.

Spreading Warmth Through Handmade Scarves

When Rae Della Creta of Caldwell read about scarf bombing—leaving handmade scarves in public spaces for anyone in need—she knew she had to bring the concept to her town. Inspired by a “Washington Post” article, Rae began knitting last spring, gathering friends and even a visiting neighbor from Argentina to join the effort. Together, they crafted an array of colorful scarves and hats, each unique and made with love.

Unlike traditional scarf bombing, which is done in outdoor locations where items can become damaged by the elements, Rae opts for indoor drop-off locations such as the library, police station, and food pantry to ensure her creations reach those who truly need them.

Using leftover yarn from her stash, Rae embraces creativity in her patterns and colors, reflecting her lifelong passion for knitting. As her group grows, Rae’s work continues to inspire warmth and connection in her community. To participate or donate yarn, Rae can be contacted at rgdelacretaz@gmail.com.

WEST ORANGE RESIDENT LAUNCHES

PURGEFEST TO FOSTER COMMUNITY AND GIVE BACK THROUGH CONNECTION

WWhen Tez Roro, a natural connector, noticed her four-year-old West Orange Buy Nothing Facebook group buzzing with activity as members eagerly decluttered their homes, she saw an opportunity to bring people together in a new way. Inspired by similar events in neighboring towns, Tez created Buy Nothing #PurgeFest—an innovative, community-wide event that allowed residents to purge excess items while fostering connections and promoting sustainability.

Held in late November 2024, PurgeFest wasn’t your typical garage sale or curbside giveaway before the holiday season. It was a hyper-local event exclusively for West Orange Buy Nothing group members. Buy Nothing is a global movement emphasizing generosity, connection, and sustainability—values Tez champions by focusing on the relationships created through exchanging goods, time, and talent. Unlike typical swap or freecycle groups, Buy Nothing prioritizes community-building, where items are exchanged with neighbors, not strangers, fostering genuine connections.

Through a simple poll in her Buy Nothing group, Tez gauged interest in PurgeFest, and the response was overwhelming. About 80 households participated, setting up tables in their front yards to give away everything from clothes and children’s toys to furniture, electronics, and unused appliances. The event spanned a weekend, allowing participation on one or both days and accommodating those who observe the Sabbath.

The true magic of PurgeFest wasn’t just in the items exchanged but in the connections made. “Some people stayed outside to chat; others drove around picking up items while running errands, but it was all about meeting neighbors and sharing,” Tez explains. Many participants found it cathartic to let go of unneeded items,

some with sentimental value, knowing they were going to neighbors rather than strangers or landfills.

The group has become a lifeline for many members. One participant shared, “Through this group, I got clothes for a job interview, toys, postpartum care items… strangers who didn’t know me changed my situation.” Over the years, members have gifted everything from spoons to box seats for performances, demonstrating the breadth of generosity. Beyond goods, the group shares time and talent— helping shovel snow, giving rides, or offering skilled assistance.

Tez calls the group “the joyful corner of the internet,” where positivity, support, and generosity thrive.

PurgeFest also contributed to reducing waste. Items not claimed during the event were donated or recycled, embodying the Buy Nothing philosophy of reducing consumerism, keeping goods out of landfills, and supporting neighbors in need.

Tez is no stranger to building community. She advocated for and launched a free full-day PreK program in West Orange, a grassroots initiative that now benefits hundreds of families. Whether organizing events or leading community-driven movements, Tez is driven by a deep commitment to giving back and creating lasting change.

PurgeFest was a resounding success, and Tez hopes it will inspire similar events in other Buy Nothing groups. With plans for another PurgeFest in the spring, the movement is gaining momentum, strengthening ties between neighbors and encouraging a more sustainable way of living. Tez’s efforts highlight how small, intentional acts of connection can create a better, more unified community.

From left, West Orange PurgeFest participants Jill Diana Chasse and Tiffany Ray spend some time with Tez Roro, who founded both the West Orange Buy Nothing Group on Facebook and PurgeFest.

RUNNING WILD:

ONE WOMAN’S MISSION TO SAVE CHEETAHS IN SOUTH AFRICA

FFor Livingston’s Diana Cirillo, volunteering with cheetahs in South Africa is more than an adventure—it’s a lifelong passion turned into meaningful action. Since January 2023, Diana has spent time at Running Wild Cheetah Conservation in South Africa, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing cheetahs into the wild. The center is one of the only facilities in the world that actively breeds cheetahs for the singular purpose of releasing them. Cubs born at Running Wild are raised by their mothers, with the supervision of staff, and allowed to learn how to hunt on nearby land. The facility utilizes a specific program to help teach the cheetahs skills they will need upon release in order to remain safe in the wild. Diana enjoys seeing the cheetahs move through their training with each subsequent visit, until they are ready to be released into a preserve.

Cheetahs have fascinated Diana since college. She was always captivated by their speed, agility, and evolutionary perfection, from their aerodynamic bodies to their unique teardrop markings. “They’re fragile yet fierce,” Diana says, describing the cheetahs’ delicate nature and specialized survival skills. Volunteering offers her the chance to contribute to the species’ survival, with fewer than 7,500 cheetahs left in the wild.

During her two-week stints, Diana works alongside international volunteers to clean enclosures, prepare meals, and assist with the cheetahs’ care. Each day starts early, often with scrubbing, clearing debris, and preparing the animals’ water. Afternoons are spent cutting meat—sometimes donated from nearby farms—and feeding the cheetahs.

“Watching them eat is mesmerizing,” Diana shares. “Each cheetah has a personality, and I’ve come to know them all.” Some, like the cubs she helped raise, are destined for release into private reserves, where they can live and hunt freely. Others, like an adult cheetah with three legs, will live out their days safely at the sanctuary.

Diana also enjoys interacting with the sanctuary’s other animals, including caracals, servals, and playful meerkats. Despite the physical labor and rustic conditions, she finds immense fulfillment in the work. “Helping these cheetahs prepare for the wild—knowing I’m contributing to their survival—is a dream come true,” she says.

Cheetahs face significant threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Sanctuaries like Running Wild not only rehabilitate cheetahs but also educate local communities and support conservation efforts. For Diana, her volunteer trips are a chance to combine her love for animals with meaningful impact. “It’s not a vacation—it’s a calling,” she says.

Diana plans to return to South Africa annually, eager to support the sanctuary’s mission. While she hasn’t yet witnessed a cheetah she’s cared for being released, she dreams of seeing them thrive in the wild. “Knowing I’ve played a small part in their journey is enough to keep me going back,” Diana reflects.

At Musical Theatre Conservatory, “Theatre for Life” is more than just a motto; it is their guiding philosophy. Through their Broadway Boot Camp, children get the opportunity to bring this philosophy to life. Broadway Boot Camp teaches children the skills they need to actually get on stage and do what they love. MTC students work with theatre professionals, who are committed to giving every child the solid foundation they need to be the best performer they can be. Each day, students will enjoy a rotating schedule that includes: Voice, Acting, Theatre Dance, Hip Hop, Song Interpretation, Comedy Improvisation, Stage Combat, TV & Commercial Acting, Audition T`echniques, Make-Up, and Production Rehearsal. The program ends with a “splash” with their annual Luau Pool Party! In just three weeks, students are guided from classes to rehearsals culminating in a costumed, cabaret-style show, produced by theatre professionals. Students also have the chance to meet with agents and Broadway actors to get the inside scoop on working in theatre, film, and television. This year the final shows will be in NJ and NYC!

FUNCTIONAL SMILES

Dr. Gi Gi Paralkar

Being an orthodontist is a great way to transform somebody’s life through their smile. It’s the best job in the world.”

AAfter spending some time using her biomedical engineering degree in the corporate world, Dr. Gi Gi Paralkar yearned to follow in her dentist father’s footsteps. When it came time to choosing a specialty, she was drawn to orthodontics.

“What drew me in was the combination of engineering, aesthetics, and physicsorthodontics really marries a lot of beauty and aesthetic attributes,” she says.

Opening Livingston Family Orthodontics in 2017 was a dream come true. “My father never got to own his own office, although that was a dream of his too,” says Dr. Gi Gi. “I wanted to be able to set my own culture and treatment philosophy for my patients.”

When patients and their families walk in the door, they feel welcome and comfortable right away. “It doesn’t feel stuffy or sterile in here. Jenny is our office manager, and with her warmth and personality, she’s just the heart of the practice.”

BEAUTIFUL, FUNCTIONAL SMILES FOR EVERY AGE

A warm, welcoming practice that provides high-quality results

(continued from the previous page)

When they meet the doctor, they feel listened to and respected. “I want that deep relationship with my patients and to provide that high-level of care which I believe they and their families really appreciate. They’re going to get the opportunity to get to know us very well and vice versa.”

Dr. Gi Gi works with patients of all ages, (her oldest patients are in their 80s), which

she really enjoys. “I highly recommend that each parent schedule a consultation when their child is around 7 years old. This is not necessarily with the intention of treating them that young, but we want to screen for potential problems that could be resolved early and prevent a more complicated or more invasive case later on.”

For example, if there’s not enough room for front adult teeth or the upper jaw is

too narrow, she can make sure space is created so permanent teeth come in properly. “If everything is just as it should be, then I’ll ask them to come back and see me in a year to make sure that all the adult teeth are coming in as they should,” she says. “That way, the child gets a chance to see that our office and orthodontic treatment are not scary, and the parents also have an opportunity to ask questions.”

Dr. Gi Gi and Kiara Roche, dental assistant

Livingston Family Orthodontics offers innovative solutions like 3D printing to provide patients with healthy, functional and beautiful smiles. “Many of our patients come in for aligners, and we offer Invisalign® and Spark™. We also offer metal braces, clear braces and have fully custom options [and colors] as well.” While asking patients about their preferred method, she also uses her expertise to educate them about the best choice to give them the results they want.

When not assisting her patients, Dr. Gi Gi focuses on her other passions, such as being a mom to 9-year-old Evangeline and their 17 year-old-cat Gizmo, a loving wife of 18 years to Mike Fleming (who she says is her unsung hero), and taking time out for weightlifting, and crocheting. She uses her artistic talent to create beautiful blankets, hats and scarves just as she creates beautiful smiles.

“Being an orthodontist is a great way to transform somebody’s life through their smile,” she says. “It’s the best job in the world.”

Easy DIYs to Display Your Love

HHandmade Valentine’s Day decor is a crafty way to put your love on display. Add a little TLC to your home or share your affection with loved ones by dedicating some time to simple DIY projects that come straight from the heart.

1. Creative cutouts.

Places and moments hold special places in the heart, so memorialize them with decorative wall hangings. Use a treasured photo or map of destinations you hold dear as the base layer. Next, choose a design, such as a heart or a romantic word like “love.” Print your design then trace it on a piece of foam core or matting. Cut out the design to create an opening and layer it over the photo or map. To finish the project, either affix the top layer to the bottom and display as-is or place it in a pretty frame.

2. Sucker for succulents.

Hardy and easy to care for, succulents are a stylish way to add some plant life to your home. Add a romantic twist by gathering a selection of small succulents in a variety of colors and textures then clustering them in a heart-shaped basket or planter. Succulents also make great gifts; just create a small planter and attach a card that conveys your

3. Love is in the cards.

Almost everyone has a deck or two of old playing cards laying around, or they’re an inexpensive investment. Using the redhued cards from the heart suite, punch holes in the top of each card. String heart-themed ribbon through the holes to make a whimsical banner you can hang on a wall or across a doorway.

4. Say it in string.

Expressing yourself with string art is an easy project suitable for all ages. Start with a firm backing, such as a scrap of lightweight wood. Add a base coat of paint to make your design pop then sketch your design. Examples like a flower, heart, word or some combination of those are all good choices for a Valentine’s Day project. Add thin nails in 1/2inch intervals along the border of your design. Select your string and tie an end to the nail of your choice. There’s no right or wrong way from there; just loop from one nail to another until your design is obvious. Tie off your string, trim any excess end pieces and you’re done.

5. Collage of comrades.

Paying tribute to those you hold near and dear is easy with a stylized cork board. Select snapshots of loved ones and attach them to a basic corkboard using push pins in classic Valentine’s colors like red, white and pink. Then add accents with tape, stickers, gemstones and other embellishments.

OUR LADY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC SCHOOL

CONNECTING ON A HIGHER LEVEL

Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School in Verona is a traditional academic, faith-inspired pre-kindergarten to 8th-grade school that also includes progressive and innovative approaches to maximize each child’s education for life in the 21st-century global society. Believing in educating the whole child – academically, emotionally, and socially, the entire community of parents, educators, and children work together to achieve this goal. “With our strong Catholic faith and a supportive team of parents, educators, and children we achieve excellence in education at our small school,” says Tom Conroy, principal.

Recently celebrating its 100th anniversary, Our Lady of the Lake thrives with its award-winning academic programs. A recent two-time blue-ribbon school, Our Lady offers the core subjects of reading, English, math, and Spanish. In the athletic programs, students improve athletic skills, learn teamwork and sportsmanship, and develop lifelong physical fitness. Students participate in robust programs of volleyball, basketball, and cross country.

“We use a readers and writers’ workshop approach with students in the lower grades. Our middle students are well-prepared for high school. For example, we offer algebra so they can enter advanced mathematics courses in high school. All courses follow state and national educational standards, but with added enrichment,” says Conroy.

One notable offering that provides real-world experience for students is TREPS$. TREP$ is a project-based learning program for students in grades 5-8 that teaches them how to start their

own business. The children learn about entrepreneurship, handling money, and marketing. They also invite local entrepreneurs to speak at school and visit local business owners who give them a realistic overview of entrepreneurship. The program culminates with a marketplace day where students sell their individually created wares to the outside community.

In addition to TREP$, our Lady offers Forensics for grades 5-8, which has real world benefits of confidence, leadership and improves communication skills. Recently, one of the students won third place in the last local competition.

Parental involvement is paramount to a successful school community. Our Lady of the Lake has outstanding parental involvement through its HSA. With a dedicated committee of thirteen parents leading the efforts, all parents are encouraged to support the school through fundraising efforts and other endeavors that foster school achievement. In recent years, the HSA raised funds for a new playground and for Promethean Boards for the teachers. “Catholic education is hands-on support. Everyone must be on board to make it work, “ states Conroy.

We want our children to come to school happy,” remarks Conroy. “Our dedicated Catholic community makes this happen.”

SENIOR LIVING

A Understanding AFib

Living With and Treating a Common Condition

A diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AFib) may be scary, but it doesn’t have to hold you back from enjoying life. Learning more about the condition and treatment options can significantly affect your prognosis and quality of living. AFib is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia or abnormal heart rhythm. It occurs when the upper chambers of the heart, called the atria, beat rapidly or in an uncontrolled manner. AFib can cause a wide variety of symptoms, including heart palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty exercising, anxiety, chest pain and dizziness.

AFib impacts nearly 40 million people worldwide, according to research published in the “International Journal of Stroke,” including 6 million people in the United States alone. Despite its prevalence, many people are unfamiliar with the symptoms, available treatment options and importance of early treatment to avoid disease progression or other lifethreatening complications such as a stroke. More than a quarter of adults living with AFib have fears and anxiety about the progressive nature of the disease, according to a survey conducted by Biosense Webster, Inc., part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech. However, a quarter of patients did not get treatment immediately after diagnosis and 44% of patients have ended up in the emergency room due to their condition.

Speak to Your Doctor

Despite half of adults 55 and older believing they may be at risk for AFib, only one-fifth (18%) said their doctors have ever discussed AFib with them and even less (10%) have proactively spoken to their doctors about it. Recognizing symptoms and talking to your doctor as soon as possible can help prevent the progression of AFib.

Make Lifestyle Changes

About 1 in 4 adults over the age of 40 are at risk of developing AFib. The causes are wide-ranging and include non-modifiable and lifestyle factors. Some non-modifiable risk factors include age, family history and a heart disease diagnosis. Making lifestyle changes to control factors such as obesity, smoking and sleep apnea may help lower your risk. Limiting alcohol and caffeine consumption and controlling your stress can also reduce your risk and may help manage AFib episodes.

Consider Treatment Options

For most AFib patients, treatment begins with medication. Medications can be used for controlling your heart rate, rhythm and blood thickness, but about half of patients don’t respond to or can’t tolerate medications. Catheter ablation is a procedure to restore the heart’s incorrect electrical signals that cause an abnormal heart rhythm. It is recommended by the American College of Cardiology, the Heart Rhythm Society and the American Heart Association for patients when medication proves to be unsuccessful.

To learn more about AFib and treatment options, including catheter ablation, visit getsmartaboutafib.com.

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

If you’re concerned about your risk of AFib, consider these questions to ask your doctor at your next visit:

Questions for your primary care physician:

1. I have some concerning symptoms. Could they be the result of AFib?

2. Do I need to take any diagnostic tests?

3. Am I at risk of stroke?

4. When should I go to the emergency room?

5. Do I need to make any lifestyle modifications?

6. What are my treatment options?

7. Should I see a specialist?

If your physician recommends medications:

1. Why are you recommending this medication?

2. What should I do if I have side effects or it doesn’t work?

3. Can I take this medication with the other medicines I’m already taking?

If medications aren’t working:

1. Am I a good candidate for a catheter ablation procedure?

2. What are the benefits and risks of a catheter ablation procedure?

3. Can you refer me to an electrophysiologist?

SMART MEMORY MOVES

A FOCUS ON PREVENTION, EARLY-DETECTION AND TREATMENT OF DEMENTIA

DDementia is a general term that refers to a group of illnesses affecting memory, thinking, or speaking. Historically, dementia was viewed as a disease of old people. However, now it is increasingly seen in younger people. Early-onset dementia is defined as the onset of symptoms prior to age 65.

Fortunately, diagnoses and treatments have dramatically improved, and while the disease cannot be cured, its progress can be slowed. “Once someone is diagnosed, we don’t wait,” says Galina Shenfeld, executive director and founder of the Memory Center. “There are things that should be done right away.”

Galina has a personal stake in staying on top of the latest research – her husband was diagnosed with dementia in 2019 and is successfully being treated in the center with revolutionary therapies.

“We have a plethora of things we can do and we have incredible diagnostic cognitive tests. We also do specific blood work for genetic predisposition and signs

of dementia. Health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, Lyme disease, and gingivitis increase one’s chance of dementia. We now know that the best treatment is prevention or early detection.”

Two-thirds of patients with Alzheimer’s are post-menopausal women, she says, so it’s important to improve their quality of sleep as well as their diets, and control weight and optimize medications, if needed.

The Memory Center is a multi-specialty clinic composed of an internist, neurologist, psychiatrist and staff trained in neurological and psychological testing. “Utilizing the latest medical technology, we’re seeing incredibly positive results,” says Galina.

PPatriot Mobility is certainly an aptly named company. Founded in 2010 by a military veteran, the company installs wheelchair ramps and other accessibility equipment to help those with mobility assistance needs.

CEO Chris Facchina says that Patriot Mobility, which services all of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, has two broad product lines: “We have a longstanding relationship with the U.S. Veterans Administration, providing their clients with wheelchairs and wheelchair repairs. Our other product line is accessibility equipment, which we install for residential and commercial customers, as well as the VA.”

The company installs a large number of outdoor wheelchair ramps for residential customers. Other accessibility equipment includes stair, car, pool, and vertical platform lifts. Facchina explains, “A vertical platform lift is essentially an open-air elevator, they can be installed both in and outdoors. This may be a better option for a wheelchair user needing to access a higher floor in his or her house than a very long wheelchair ramp would be.”

Facchina notes that residential stair lifts can also be installed both in and outdoors, and can be custom made to fit the turns and curves of your home. In addition, Patriot Mobility installs three different models of car lifts, which allow users to bring their wheelchair or scooter along with them wherever they go.

Patriot Mobility also works closely with Ramp It Up, a nonprofit organization which provides wheelchair ramps for those in need.

He concludes, “We enable our clients to better access their homes and families, and thus to live better lives; we’re extremely proud of this, and to be veteran founded, and veteran operated.”

ASSISTING SENIORS WITH ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING

AAs loved ones age, family caregivers often assume new roles to support their daily needs, particularly assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs). These essential tasks enable individuals to maintain their independence and quality of life.

ADLs are the daily self-care tasks individuals perform to live independently. They are typically categorized into six core areas: bathing & personal hygiene, dressing, eating, toileting, mobility, and continence. Instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), such as managing finances or preparing meals, are more complex skills that some seniors may also need help with.

Monitoring a senior’s ability to manage ADLs is crucial for assessing their health and determining the level of care they may need. Difficulties with ADLs can indicate underlying health issues, such as cognitive decline, mobility challenges, or chronic illnesses. Caregivers who understand these limitations can offer more targeted support and seek professional help when necessary.

Here are some practical ideas for supporting seniors while promoting their independence and dignity:

• Install grab bars and non-slip mats, handheld showerheads, and cleansing wipes.

• Ensure privacy. Use towels or robes to maintain dignity.

• Organize clothing by laying out clothes in order of wear.

• Choose adaptive clothing such as Velcro fasteners or elastic waistbands.

• Allow your loved one time to dress independently.

• Modify utensils by use adaptive utensils for easier handling.

• Serve soft, nutrient-dense easy-to-eat food.

• Let them feed themselves, assisting only if needed.

• Encourage regular bathroom breaks.

• Provide adaptive equipment such as raised toilet seats and grab bars.

• Use mobility aids: walkers, canes, or wheelchairs.

• Ensure safety by removing tripping hazards and improve lighting.

• Allow your loved one to move independently while offering support as needed.

• Use protective products such as discreet incontinence pads for accidents.

• Ensure adequate fluid intake to maintain health.

By understanding and assisting with ADLs, family caregivers can provide compassionate care while promoting their loved ones’ dignity and independence. Home care agencies can provide tailored assistance, ensuring seniors receive compassionate and professional care.

Know These Core Factors to Avoid a HEART HEALTH SYNDROME

IIn the US, 1 in 3 adults is at risk for a newly recognized syndrome that comes from a combination of heart disease, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and excess body weight. This cluster of conditions, called cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, is an example of how problems in one part of your body can affect other parts.

To avoid CKM syndrome, health experts suggest paying close attention to four of the American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 - blood pressure, lipids, body weight and blood sugar level - which are core health factors that impact your metabolic health.

Good metabolic health means your body uses energy well and keeps these factors in a normal range. However, when numbers are off in one area, it can affect others, raising your risk for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and diabetes. Consider these tips from the American Heart Association to help keep your core health factors under control.

Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, happens when the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels is too high. High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

Because high blood pressure doesn’t have symptoms, the only way to know you have it is to get your blood pressure checked. Healthy blood pressure is below 120/80. If your blood pressure is 130/80 or higher, talk to your doctor about checking your other core health factors.

Lifestyle changes can help reduce high blood pressure. One example is a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating pattern that’s low in fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Losing 10 pounds and reducing alcohol consumption can also reduce blood pressure.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance your liver makes then circulates in the blood where your body uses it to build cells and make vitamins and hormones. You may also get cholesterol from eating animal products. If there’s too much cholesterol circulating, your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke may increase.

For optimal CKM health, your LDL cholesterol should be below 100 and triglycerides below 150. Triglycerides are the most common type of fat in the body. If your triglyceride level is 135 or higher, talk to your doctor about decreasing your risk.

Losing body weight and increasing physical activity decrease triglyceride levels. In addition, DASH and Mediterranean (plant-based, high-fiber, low-fat) eating patterns support healthy LDL and triglyceride levels.

Body Weight

Healthy weight may be determined by body mass index (BMI), a number that

represents your weight in relation to your height. Extra body fat can mean a higher risk for many health problems, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

CKM syndrome starts when BMI is 25 or higher and waist circumference is 88 centimeters or higher for women and 102 centimeters or higher for men. Aim for a BMI between 18.5-25.

To lose weight and keep it off, start by setting realistic goals. Understand how much and why you eat, manage portion sizes, make smart snack substitutions and be physically active.

Blood Sugar

High blood sugar can slowly damage the kidneys. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, and it increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Blood sugar is measured in two ways: a fasting blood glucose test (short term blood sugar) and an A1C test (long term blood sugar control). A normal fasting blood glucose level is 70-99 and a normal A1C level is below 5.7%. Fasting blood glucose above 125 and A1C of 6.5% or higher means you have diabetes.

Habits that help you avoid high blood pressure, weight gain and high cholesterol also keep your blood sugar in check. These are especially important if you have a family history of diabetes.

NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH: PROMOTING HEALTHY SMILES

FFebruary is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and serves as an important reminder for parents and caregivers to focus on the dental health of the youngest members of our society. Sponsored by the American Dental Association, this month-long observance aims to raise awareness about the importance of oral health for children and to educate families on effective dental hygiene practices.

Tips for Parents and Caregivers:

Start Early— Begin dental care even before the first teeth appear. Clean your baby’s gums with a soft cloth or a baby toothbrush.

Establish a Routine— Encourage brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first tooth erupts. Make it a fun, engaging part of your child’s daily routine.

Limit Sugary Snacks and Drinks— Offer healthier snack options and reduce the intake of sugary beverages to minimize the risk of cavities.

Regular Dental Visits— Schedule regular check-ups with a pediatric dentist starting around the child’s first birthday. These visits can help catch issues early and set a precedent for good dental habits.

Lead by Example— Children often mimic their parents’ behaviors. Show them your own commitment to oral health by maintaining your dental hygiene practices.

Advantages from Adversity

“The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It’s what you’re made of, not the circumstances.”

AA good friend shared what he thought were two essential keys to a successful and fulfilling life: hardships and resiliency. Hardships provide appreciation for life, relationships, and the little things, but most importantly, they provide invaluable education. Resilience combined with flexibility in our movement forward enhances every single step and our chances for success.

I’ve been fascinated with the elements of bamboo for a big part of my life. Bamboo has many benefits, including scaffolding for skyscrapers, crafting furniture, and using its soil-grabbing roots to stabilize steep slopes and riverbanks. But the one fact that amazes me is that a single stalk of bamboo has more tensile strength than a steel cable of the same thickness, and this, combined with its flexibility, is a good example of how something rigid isn’t always the strongest. We should study how it bends and flexes during the most significant storms and how that pertains to our lives. Too rigid like an oak tree, and we snap.

As an entrepreneur working on various projects at once, I think of the saying that you can’t get to second base without taking your foot off first. With any advancement, there will always be risk and sacrifice. Seeing adversity as your friend is not an easy task. When it’s

happening, there is a tendency to let fear and frustration cloud your vision. Here are a few thoughts on embracing adversity while you’re in the middle of the storm.

Awareness of Incoming Data. Look closely at the messages you’re receiving during difficulty. Is there something positive that you can focus on that harnesses the lessons that can be learned? We usually wait too long for the opportunities to present themselves. Whenever I receive rejection and setbacks when trying to move forward with an invention, television program, a client athlete, or any scenario that requires overcoming obstacles, I always look for the messages that those setbacks introduce. Some could be valuable to reorganize and reinvent yourself to return more vigorously with a change of direction. Some of those messages can waste time because they don’t mean anything anyway. Who is telling you no? What is their direct experience, and do they understand who you are, your mission, and your passion?

State of Mind.

Your ability to stay positive through tough situations is critical for successful outcomes. I want to give you a simple test to demonstrate my discussion. I would like you to look at the word below and read it out loud: OPPORTUNITYISNOWHERE.

What did you read? Opportunity is nowhere? Or is Opportunity now here? It’s all how you look at it. And that’s the same with events that go on all around you. You need to look for the positive in bad situations, even when you seem helpless and hit with so much resistance. You can only see the stars when it’s dark enough.

Only you can control how you think, and by doing that, you can maintain a positive state of mind. Look for the lessons.

Past Painful Events Become Foundations for Future Success. There is not a single area of adversity in my past that I would trade for the amount of wisdom it has provided me on so many new fronts. The actions we choose shape us. Sometimes, we can even recreate adverse situations that become beneficial down the road.

Regarding workouts, I love to push the limits and find out how much further I can go. I’ve been training for decades with 40 pounds of steel rings on my arms while training with swords, the bo staff, and nunchucks out in the snow barefoot. It was painful at first getting adjusted to the impact on my bones as the steel rings shook back and forth. But the funny thing is, after time, the pain was eliminated, and it strengthened my bone density and ability to take a hit. I also started to enjoy the time training in cold weather. The benefits of cold weather training and cold therapy are too long and need to be a whole different column, but there is tremendous gain from pain that’s managed correctly.
