Glen Ridge Resident Cooper
Hughes’ Beat Won’t Stop
If there’s a stage, there’s a good chance Cooper Hughes is on it. This 17-year-old Glen Ridge drummer isn’t just in a band—he’s in four. From the alt-rock grunge sound of Ultraviolet to the pop-punk energy of Good Damage, the blistering heavy metal of Them Damn Kings to the Motley Crüe tribute act SixX Seconds to Mars, Cooper’s rhythm is everywhere. Balancing school, practice, and more than 70 shows this year, he’s set to record an album in Savannah, hit the road with his bands, and keep pushing his music forward. A Berklee summer program fueled his dream of making drumming his career, and he’s already landed an endorsement from Salty MF. With his sticks in hand and boundless energy, Cooper Hughes is a name to watch in the rock scene. Catch him live—if you can keep up. He can be found on Instagram @CooperHughesDrums

Orange Teen Has Front-Row Seat to New Jersey’s Gubernatorial Political Showdowns
or Dylan Schatell, politics isn’t just a spectator sport—it’s a future goal. 2024 West Orange High School graduate, Dylan Schatell, now at Rutgers-New Brunswick with ambitions for law school and interest in politics, got more than a taste of the fastpaced world of campaigns and politics at the first Gubernatorial
Democratic and Republican primary debates of the season, which took place at Rider University He was invited to intern at the debates at the invitation of New Jersey Globe, one of the event sponsors, along with On New Jersey (ONNJ). The New Jersey Globe’s editor is David Wildstein, who grew up in Livingston and served as the town’s mayor from 1987 to 1988, and Kevin Sanders of West Orange is the publisher and general manager.
With a stopwatch in one hand and a script in the other, Dylan served as one of the official timekeepers, ensuring the debates remained on schedule. “The Democratic debate on February 2 was lively but orderly, featuring big names like Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, former Senate President Steve Sweeney, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, Rep. Josh Gottheimer, and New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller. But the real challenge? The Republican showdown two days later with State Sen. Jon Bramnick, former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, former State Sen. Ed Durr, and NJ 101.5 radio host Bill Spadea. Candidates spoke over each other, tensions ran high, and chaos reigned,” states Dylan. Though he stayed cool under pressure.
With internships for Sen. Richard J. Codey and the late Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. already under his belt, this won’t be Dylan’s last time in the political arena. Stay tuned!
The members of She’s All That (Left-right): Melanie Tolomeo, Kelly Bennett, Sarah Kapilow, Adrien Tanenbaum.

ResQFoods:
How One Livingston Teen Is Rescuing More Than Just Leftovers
Most high schoolers spend their summers unwinding, but Veer Agarwal, an 11th grader from Livingston, spent his brainstorming. The result? ResQFoods.com, a tech-driven initiative tackling food waste in his community. Inspired by his passion for service and a knack for coding, Veer built a platform connecting surplus food from restaurants to local food pantries. What started as a summer project quickly expanded—ResQFoods now partners with twelve restaurants across Livingston and Millburn, including Panera Bread and Paris Baguette, ensuring that perfectly good food reaches those in need rather than a landfill.
With a dedicated team of volunteers, the organization coordinates pickups and deliveries, focusing on Market Street Mission in Morristown. Now recently backed by Table to Table, New Jersey’s first food rescue organization, he uses their app I-Rescue for donation tracking.
Even as Veer prepares for college, he’s committed to keeping the initiative thriving. His vision? A sustainable, student-powered network ensuring that no meal goes to waste. With ResQFoods, he’s proving that one idea—and one determined teen—can make a real impact.

Orange Ribbons for Jaime Convention
to Bring Celebrities and a Cause Together
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
RRayna Stern, a senior at Livingston High School, is transforming her annual fundraising event into something bigger. On March 29, 2025, the Orange Ribbons for Jaime NJ Gala will evolve into Orange Ribbons Con, a convention blending celebrity meet-and-greets with a mission to honor Jamie Guttenberg, a victim of the Parkland school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, and raise awareness about gun violence.
“As a high school student, I believe it’s crucial to speak up against gun violence and lend a helping hand wherever possible. Sadly, there are way too many shootings happening,” says Rayna.
Held at the Wilshire Grand in West Orange, Orange Ribbons Con will feature a trade-show-style setup where attendees can meet celebrities, take selfies, collect autographs, and support an important cause. Special guests include Leah Pipes (The Originals), Lindsey Shaw (Pretty Little Liars), Eleanor Matsuura (The Walking Dead), Phil Wills (Bar Rescue), Jade Hassouné (Shadowhunters), and Seth Gilliam (Teen Wolf, The Walking Dead). Unlike some conventions where attendees must pay per autograph or photo, the $150 ticket price includes unlimited selfies and autographs with all attending celebrities. The only additional cost comes from the silent auction, where guests can bid on exclusive items like signed memorabilia and one-on-one Zoom calls with well-known personalities.
Rayna began organizing these events to honor Jamie Guttenberg by raising awareness about gun violence and supporting causes Jamie cared about. Her personal connection to the cause runs deep— Rayna’s father, Robert Stern, and Jamie’s father, Fred Guttenberg, have known each other since childhood. Wanting to make a meaningful impact, Rayna launched the event to fund initiatives in Jamie’s memory, including The Friendship Journey, Jacob’s Pillow, World Central Kitchen, Ballet and Books, Paley Institution, and Paws of Love, a program that provides service dogs to families affected by gun violence, covering their first year of expenses.
Since starting this initiative, Rayna has helped raise over $35,000. She hopes this year’s convention will surpass previous fundraising efforts and inspire even more people to get involved. As she heads to college, she remains committed to continuing her work, though the event format may evolve depending on her schedule and location.
With strong community support and growing attendance, Orange Ribbons Con is poised to become a must-attend event for fans and advocates alike.
If you want to support this event, there are two ways to help—grab a ticket and join the day of fun at orangeribbonsforjaimenjgala.com, or send an email to orfjnewjerseygala@gmail.com to learn how you can contribute.
George Oliphant (George To The Rescue), Robert Stern (Rayna’s father), Hayley Stern, Rayna Stern, Crystal Fox (Big Little Lies), and Zaire Carter (Assistant to State Director for NJ Senator Cory Booker).

MISSION: KID SUCCESS is Giving Hope and Changing Lives!
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
AAccess to essential therapies can often feel unattainable for families of children with autism, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. Insurance often fails to cover the many effective treatments, such as sensory motor training, neuroreflex integration, auditory-verbal speech therapy, occupational therapy, equine-assisted therapy, adapted Taekwondo, and specialized tutoring. That’s where Mission: Kid Success steps in.
Mission: Kid Success was founded in 2019 by Priscilla Leto and her cousin, Carla Iommetti, after Priscilla’s son, Matthew, who is diagnosed with autism, received life-changing therapies—most of which were not covered by insurance and paid out of pocket. Seeing firsthand the financial burden families face, they created this volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit to provide grants that help children access the vital therapies they need. Since its inception, the organization has awarded over $100,000 in grants, helping more than 30 families across New Jersey and surrounding states.
One of the passionate forces behind this mission is Vinni Taneja of North Caldwell. A longtime friend of Leto, and a dedicated board member, Vinni has poured her heart into supporting
Mission: Kid Success in every way possible. “Priscilla is like family to me,” she says. “I’ve known her son since before he was born, and I’ve seen firsthand how life-changing these therapies have been for him and others.”
Vinni brings her own professional and personal experiences to the organization. Having transitioned from a 25-year corporate career to owning her own wellness company, Chakra Wellness,
she contributes in unique ways to Mission: Kid Success. At fundraisers, she offers yoga, guided meditations, breathwork, and sound healing sessions with her Himalayan singing bowls— practices she studied in Nepal. Her husband, Soni, equally dedicated, donates his DJ services to create lively and engaging events.
For Vinni, the work is deeply personal. “Parents can feel hopeless when they can’t afford the treatments their child needs. Mission: Kid Success gives them hope and a chance to see real progress.” She believes every child is unique, and access to these therapies can be life-changing—not just for the child, but for the entire family.
Fundraising is a critical part of Mission: Kid Success, as grants are only awarded when funds are available. The organization hosts creative events like the Sip & Chill fundraiser, a relaxing evening of self-care, music, and interactive activities. Last year’s event raised over $8,000, directly funding therapies for children in need. This year, the 2nd Annual Sip & Chill will take place on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 6pm to 9pm at 18th Amendment in Rutherford, NJ. Guests will enjoy a hands-on bonsai tree workshop from The Crafty Kit, guided sound healing meditation with aromatherapy from Chakra Wellness, live music by DJ Soni Seehra, a silent auction, and an array of delicious food from Bloomfield Best Bagels, desserts from Bageriet, and creative mocktails from Encantada Bar Services. Don’t miss this chance to unwind while making a difference!
Entirely volunteer-run, Mission: Kid Success relies on donations, sponsors, and community support to continue its work. For families in need, the organization offers more than just financial assistance—it offers a path forward. To learn more about Mission: Kid Success, purchase tickets, apply for a grant, or support their mission, visit missionkidsuccess.org.

Maximize the Space of a Small Bathroom
KKeeping a small bathroom organized can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can create a functional and clutter-free space. Start by assessing and purging your items: Remove everything, discard expired products, and keep only what you use regularly.
Utilize vertical space by installing shelves above the toilet or on empty walls for towels and toiletries.
Wall-mounted baskets or hooks can help you access everyday items easily. The area beneath the sink can hold stackable bins or organizers for cleaning supplies and extra toiletries. Consider a tiered shelving unit to make the most of the vertical space.
If you have room for a stool or ladder, choose options that while a ladder shelf can display decorative items while providing plenty of storage. Clear storage containers for medicines and beauty products help avoid duplicates; label them for organization. Keep counters simple with just a few essentials, and consider a caddy for grouping items.
Installing hooks on the back of the door can create extra storage for towels and accessories. Overthe-door racks are another great way to utilize oftenoverlooked space. Explore unconventional solutions like using a tension rod under the sink for spray bottles or magnetic strips for small metal items. Use decorative baskets or bins for smaller items.
AREA RUGS
Help to Enhance the Look and Functionality of a Space
RRugs can help delineate different areas within an open floor plan by defining spaces, such as separating a living room from a dining area or creating a cozy reading nook. They can also add warmth by providing insulation, making a space feel warmer and more inviting, especially in homes with hard flooring like tile or hardwood. Rugs can also absorb sound, reducing echoes and noise levels in a room, which is particularly beneficial in larger spaces.
A well-chosen area rug can serve as a focal point, adding color, texture, and pattern to a room and complementing existing furniture and decor. It can also help protect your flooring from scratches and wear, particularly in hightraffic areas or under furniture. Rugs add a soft surface underfoot, making areas more comfortable, especially in high-traffic zones or play areas for children.
Creating a cozy atmosphere with layers of textures, including area rugs, can make a space feel more intimate and inviting. They can also hide imperfections by cleverly covering up flaws in flooring or helping to conceal stains.
Different rugs in various colors and styles can visually divide areas while vibrancy to the decor. Rugs can be swapped out with the seasons to refresh a space and match the seasonal decor, allowing for easy transformation without significant changes.
LIGHT UP YOUR HOME
Elegant walkways and inviting entries. Vibrant outdoor living spaces surrounded by glowing landscapes. No one illuminates your home quite like Lighthouse.
THE BENEFITS OF POCKET DOORS IN THE HOME
WWhen it comes to optimizing space and enhancing aesthetics, pocket doors offer practicality and sophistication that can’t be ignored. These innovative doors slide into the wall instead of swinging open, providing numerous advantages.
One significant benefit is their ability to save space. Traditional hinged doors require clearance to swing open, which can be limiting in smaller rooms. Pocket doors maximize available square footage, especially in cramped areas like bathrooms and closets.
Available in various styles, materials, and finishes, pocket doors can complement any home decor. Whether you prefer a modern glass slider or a rustic wooden door, they enhance the visual appeal of any room. They can create unique entryways or separate spaces without the bulk of traditional doors.
Pocket doors slide open seamlessly, facilitating movement between rooms, especially in high-traffic areas. They can also create fluidity between indoor and outdoor spaces, making gatherings more enjoyable.
While serving as room dividers, pocket doors offer privacy without sacrificing style. When closed, they effectively block noise and visual distractions, providing a haven for relaxation or focused work. They are an excellent option for home offices or guest rooms where privacy is essential.
Lastly, pocket doors can significantly enhance comfort and independence for those who rely on mobility aids, ensuring everyone can move freely throughout the home.
ATTRACTING BACKYARD BIRDS WITH THE RIGHT SEED
BBirdwatching in your backyard can be a rewarding and entertaining hobby. One of the most effective ways to attract a variety of birds is by offering the right seeds. Different species of birds have different dietary preferences, so understanding what types of seeds to use can turn your garden into a vibrant avian hotspot
Birds are generally attracted to seeds that are high in energy and provide essential nutrients. Here are some common seed types and the birds they attract:
Sunflower Seeds: Black oil sunflower seeds are among the most popular seeds for attracting birds. Their high oil content offers a great energy source. You can expect to see species like chickadees, cardinals, finches, and jays flocking to your feeders.
Safflower Seeds: These seeds are favored by cardinals and some finch species. Unlike sunflower seeds, safflower seeds are less appealing to some of the more common backyard pests, such as squirrels.
Nyjer Seeds (Thistle): Nyjer seeds are tiny but packed with fat and protein, making them a favorite among goldfinches, pine siskins, and doves. Use a special nyjer feeder to keep the small seeds contained.
Millet: White proso millet is often loved by ground-feeding birds such as juncos, sparrows, and doves. Mixing this with other seeds can attract a wider range of species seeking food on the ground.
Peanuts: Whether in-shell or shelled, peanuts attract a variety of birds, including woodpeckers, jays, and nuthatches. Be sure to offer unsalted peanuts to ensure their health.
So fill your feeders, enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for new feathered visitors. Happy birdwatching!
P TIPS FOR REMOVING GREASE from Kitchen Cabinets
Proper cleaning and maintenance will help keep your kitchen cabinets looking clean and pristine. To prevent grease buildup, clean your cabinets regularly, especially those near the stove. Wipe down surfaces after cooking to catch grease before it hardens.
GENTLE CLEANING SOLUTION: Mix a mild dish soap or a few drops of liquid detergent with warm water. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the finish.
WARM WATER RINSE: Dampen a clean cloth or sponge in the soapy water mixture, wring it out well, and wipe down the greasy areas on your cabinets. Always use a gentle touch to avoid scratching the surface.
VINEGAR SOLUTION: White vinegar is a natural degreaser. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and use this solution for more stubborn grease stains. Test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t harm the cabinet finish.
BAKING SODA PASTE: For tough, sticky grease spots, make a paste using baking soda and water. Gently rub it onto the affected area with a soft cloth, and then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
COMMERCIAL CLEANERS: Some kitchen cabinet-specific cleaners are available on the market. Read and follow the product instructions carefully.
MICROFIBER CLOTH: Use a microfiber cloth for the final wipe-down to ensure a streak-free finish.
1/2
CABINET HARDWARE: Don’t forget to clean cabinet knobs and handles. Remove them if possible and soak them in warm, soapy water for a thorough cleaning.
PROTECTIVE COATING: Apply a furniture wax or cabinet polish to create a protective barrier that makes it easier to clean in the future.
Remember to always read the manufacturer’s care instructions for your specific cabinet material, as different surfaces may require special care.

REDUCING ENERGY COSTS also Supports Sustainability
RReducing energy expenses alleviates financial stress and lessens your carbon footprint. Start by evaluating your energy use. An energy audit identifies areas for improvement, such as poor insulation and outdated appliances. Many utility companies offer free audits to highlight inefficiencies. Consider investing in Energy Star-rated products; although they may cost more upfront, savings on your energy bill can offset the initial investment.
Proper insulation can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs. Check your attic, basement, and walls for insulation and seal gaps in windows and doors to prevent drafts. Adjust your thermostat according to your schedule; lowering it by a few degrees in winter and raising it in summer can yield substantial savings. Programmable thermostats automate adjustments.
Switching to LED bulbs can save up to 80% on lighting costs. LED bulbs last much longer than incandescent ones, so gradually replace them and turn off lights in unused rooms. Unplug electronics when not in use to eliminate “phantom load.” Smart power strips can help manage this waste.
Make the most of natural sunlight for lighting during the day and open windows for cooling. In winter, open curtains during the day to warm your home and close them at night to retain heat. Lower your water heater to 120°F, take shorter showers, and use cold water for laundry to minimize hot water consumption.
Reducing energy costs involves minor adjustments leading to significant savings. By implementing these strategies, you can lower bills and contribute positively to the environment.

When choosing a targeted summer camp experience, look for one with an experienced staff. At CBA, we are committed to hiring Broadway professionals to work with our students in all areas of musical theater. It’s also important to find a camp that will cater to the individual.
By meeting with the students beforehand, we are able to craft an original, Broadway themed showcase with live musicians which has been carefully crafted to highlight the strengths of the students who enroll. At CBA, we feel it is important for students not only to learn lines, songs and choreography, but how to present a complete performance from the first downbeat to the final bow. We hope that because WE see their potential, our students can see it in themselves. Our goal is to ensure that students come away from the experience feeling a higher sense of self confidence.
Sarah Solie, Artistic Director, Caldwell Broadway Arts
At camp, bring your energy and enthusiasm—your passion will inspire others! Stay excited and engaged in every class, and be prepared by memorizing lines, lyrics, and choreography early so you can focus on performing. Take care of your voice and body by staying hydrated, warming up, and getting enough rest. Support other young artists by encouraging and respecting your costars—teamwork makes for an amazing Final Share! Step outside your comfort zone, challenge yourself, and embrace new experiences. Stay focused and present by minimizing distractions (yes, that means no cell phones in class!). Adopt a growth mindset—mistakes are learning opportunities, so keep improving and asking questions. Camp is the perfect place to make new friends, so sit with someone new at lunch. Wear your favorite outfit to boost your confidence (but leave the Crocs at home!). Show appreciation by writing a thank-you note to your caregiver for this amazing opportunity. Keep a journal of your progress, jotting down memories, lessons, and daily affirmations like “I can do it” and “You got this!” Pack your bag the night before to stay prepared, and if you feel nervous, take deep breaths to stay calm. Most importantly, remember—you are creating memories that will last a lifetime, so be yourself and enjoy every moment!

This summer is your chance to really own your passions. Choose what makes your heart beat a little faster. What are you genuinely curious about? That’s where the magic happens.
I remember exploring my own interests and being around people who felt the same way. It was like a spark. Suddenly, ideas I’d never even considered buzzed in my head. That’s what Caldwell offers— a community where your passions are not just accepted but celebrated.
Imagine this, you’re in a workshop, working on a project and someone says something that completely changes your perspective. Or you’re chatting with a classmate, and you discover a shared interest you never knew existed. That’s the kind of unexpected discovery that can shape your future.
Don’t be afraid to try something new, even if it feels a little outside your comfort zone. The exploration of new content can lead you to places you never even knew were possible. Caldwell Summer Academy is about that journey of discovery. It’s about finding those hidden paths and realizing your potential.
Anthony Grozzo, Caldwell Summer Academy at Caldwell University
Here are some tips for choosing a summer theater camp/program:
• Small classes and high teacher to student ratio.
• Look for an approach that groups students by both age as well as ability.
• The program should be individualized to the needs of each child and the teachers should be aware of each child’s needs and goals for the summer.
• Beware of programs that promise too much or profess to put on a different full musical every 1 or 2 weeks. Even Broadway performers need more time than that to put together a musical!
• To develop a strong foundation, it’s very important to have all students – especially beginners - taught by experienced teachers.
• Every student should be given an opportunity to “shine” in the performance so that they each have a chance to try out the skills they have learned and enjoy the thrill of being on stage!
• Overall, look for the program to foster learning, performance and group activities that help to ensure the entire experience is one that not only builds the student’s abilities and confidence, but one that also injects fun, and team spirit into the program. It is a summer camp after all!
Randy Elman, Artistic Director, Musical Theatre Conservatory
“Performing Arts camps/programs encourage students and counselors to express themselves creatively. Nurturing the creative possibilities within children through their participation in dance, music, art, and drama can bolster self-esteem and selfconfidence. Having the opportunity to experience the arts truly matters… and it’s fun!”

GOOD WORKS
The Work of Studio Montclair Volunteer Artists is Not to Be Missed
STORY AND PORTRAIT BY DAN EPSTEIN
I
If we were tracking the jewels in the crown of Essex County, one of the brightest would no doubt be Studio Montclair. A professional visual arts organization founded in 1997 by a handful of local artists, despite its local name, now numbers over 500 members from many states as well as several international members.
Executive Administrator Andrea Marshall joined the team in 2022. She manages the office, works with the artists, and is involved with almost anything that involves getting exhibits up. “I’m sort of an Art Coordinator,” she says. “I love working with the artists.” And interestingly enough, with two local gallery spaces, which continuously have exhibits on display, she is the only salaried employee. Everything else is handled by volunteers. Everything. Current SMI president Phoebe Pollinger says that: “The volunteers are the backbone of the organization.” And Pollinger is quick to point out that just as she isn’t a practicing artist, many of the engaged volunteers are people who are not artists, but simply want to be involved and find great satisfaction as part of a professional level visual arts group.
Opening on March 14th, at SMI’s Leach Gallery is an exhibit entitled “Good Works” which features the Art of 20 of the busiest of Studio Montclair’s artist volunteers. Varied media and styles are represented, and as they say, there’s something for everyone.
Palace Amusements, is a photograph captured in Asbury Park in the late 1990s by exhibition co-producer and member of the on-going exhibition hanging group John Masi. A former print production manager for PSE&G, Masi has been making photographs for decades and has several in this show.

Autumn Walk is a 5x8 inch pencil drawing on paper by Denis Orloff. A coordinator of SMI’s monthly Drop-In Critique Sessions, and a former Vice-President of Studio Montclair, Orloff is known widely for remarkable landscape paintings inspired by the time he spends in the Catskills. Taking a break from painting last summer to work on a series of intimate prismacolor pencil drawings, he offers a group in this exhibit that draw you in with their beauty and elegant simplicity.
Janet Boltax is well known for her large scale oil portrait paintings, behind the scenes, she does a lot of writing for Studio Montclair. Here she offers, The Last Drag Queen Standing, a 36x36 inch part of a series of portraits of drag queens completed in 2025. As in all of her portraiture, you immediately feel a sense of knowing the subject.
While the exhibition is open until April 11, 2025, put the opening reception on Friday, March14th, from 6 to 8pm on
your calendar. You’ll have a chance not only to see some fascinating work, but to mix and mingle with the artists, who will be only too happy to meet you. But be advised: you may be caught up and find yourself volunteering with special skills, or simply to help out, just to be part of this amazing organization.

JBWS Empowers Domestic Violence Survivors BREAKING THE SILENCE
MMorris County and the surrounding areas are fortunate to have JBWS, an agency dedicated to helping families impacted by domestic violence. Founded nearly 50 years ago by a group of volunteers concerned with the prevalence of abuse in the area, JBWS, and its partners are helping survivors find safety for themselves and their children. JBWS continues its mission: the prevention of domestic violence through the protection and empowerment of survivors, the rehabilitation of the family, advocacy for social reform to prevent partner violence, and education to the public about domestic violence and its consequences.
Diane Williams, MSW, LCSW, is the CEO of JBWS. Community partnerships led to her work at JBWS in 2018. Through collaboration with community partners, the organization has grown since then to meet the overwhelming and diverse needs of victims of domestic violence. She shared that “People often have the misconception that because Morris County is one of the wealthiest counties in NJ, domestic violence doesn’t happen here. In 2024, JBWS’ Domestic Violence Response Team was dispatched 1,115 times to police stations and emergency rooms in Morris County to respond to domestic violence victims seeking safety and support.”
JBWS is committed to increasing conversations about abuse. Through robust community education, public and private partnerships, legislative advocacy, and extensive social media efforts, JBWS works tirelessly to ensure survivors of abuse have access to lifesaving services. In 2024, JBWS launched Unsilenced: Real Conversations About Abuse, where survivors, psychologists, social workers, and others impacted by domestic violence have raw, unfiltered conversations about abuse. JBWS’ goal is to break the silence that currently surrounds domestic violence in our society.
“Breaking the silence of domestic violence is not just about speaking up—it’s about creating a community where survivors feel heard, supported, and empowered. Silence enables abuse to thrive, but when we speak up and out, we are giving hope and strength to those who feel trapped. No one should have to suffer in silence,” said Williams.
According to Williams, one of the biggest problems for domestic abuse survivors is finding affordable housing. The number of survivors needing shelter grows while the funds for such housing decrease. One hundred eighty-nine adults and their children sought emergency shelter at JBWS’ emergency safe house, while 59 adults and their children resided in JBWS’ transitional housing program in 2024.
Consisting of eleven fully furnished apartments, the transitional housing program houses victims for up to two years. For survivors in both programs, JBWS looks for ways to help them through resources for independent living, such as employment, housing, counseling, and legal and other needs.
Despite the rising cases of domestic violence locally and nationally, Williams sees a fantastic collaboration in the community to combat domestic violence. Community nonprofits, law enforcement, legal offices, and local volunteers work together to support the victims of domestic abuse.
“When friends, family, neighbors, volunteers, and community partners come together, they can help break the cycle of abuse by offering protection, education, support, and resources. Communities can also play a vital role in changing the narratives that allow violence to persist, challenging harmful stereotypes, and promoting healthier relationships.,” says Williams.

FAVA LAW
6 South Street, Morristown 973-532-2200 | favalawnj.com
As the founder of Fava Law, Sandra Fava, Esq. has built a family law practice dedicated to providing clients with personalized, high-quality legal services. In 2025, she looks forward to expanding her firm’s offerings beyond matrimonial law to include complementary practice areas such as trust and estates and criminal law. “This expansion will allow us to serve our clients more comprehensively,” she explains.
A significant trend in family law that Fava is watching closely is the potential impact of Project 2025, a proposal that includes eliminating no-fault divorce. “If this happens, it could create complications for people seeking divorces, particularly for women who often have less access to financial resources,” she notes. The possible shift in divorce law could have far-reaching consequences, making it essential for family law practitioners to stay informed and prepared.
Fava’s journey into law was not straightforward. Despite always wanting to be an attorney, she initially avoided family law due to her sister’s difficult divorce. However, during law school, a pro bono domestic violence case changed her perspective. “Working on that case was a turning point,” she recalls. “I realized how fulfilling it was to help people through some of the most challenging moments of their lives.”
That passion for advocacy led her to build a firm where she could prioritize both legal excellence and compassionate client service. “Leaving a 20-year career in big law allowed me to create a practice that focuses on personal attention without the constraints of a corporate structure,” she explains. A Rachel Kapner
560 Central Avenue, New Providence | 908-665-7997 creativewallcoverings.com
As 2025 unfolds, Rachel Kapner, owner of CWI.Design, looks forward to an exciting year of new projects, particularly as clients invest in second homes and renovations. Expanding beyond New Jersey, she’s been traveling for projects, embracing fresh opportunities to transform spaces into dream homes.
One of the biggest trends she sees in interior design is the return of rich, saturated colors. After years of minimalist, monochromatic palettes, the market is embracing warmth and vibrancy. “The color of the year, Mocha Mousse, reflects this shift—earthy tones with pops of color and bold patterns,” Kapner explains. “It follows fashion trends from Europe, with large-scale designs, embellishments, and layers of texture.” This resurgence allows for fresh, exciting applications in both new builds and renovations.
What sets CWI.Design apart is its commitment to personalized service. Kapner is involved in every step, ensuring clients feel confident in her ability to manage the details. “Many of my clients are repeat customers, some spanning generations,” she says. “I’ve worked with parents, their children, and now even their grandchildren.”
Kapner’s journey into design began with her mother, Dorothy Goldberg, who founded the company 50 years ago. With a background in textiles and fine arts, Kapner initially worked in fashion before joining the family business. She apprenticed under her mother, eventually becoming president, with her husband Gary Kapner, later joining as vice president.
While CWI originally specialized in wall coverings and fabrics, it has evolved into a full-scale interior design firm. Offering everything from custom furniture to artwork and lighting, CWI.Design remains a leader in the industry, blending legacy with innovation to create uniquely tailored spaces.

PARTNERS, WINDOW WORKS
38 East Northfield Rd., Livingston | 973-535-5860 | WindowWorks-NJ.com
FFor over 40 years, Window Works has been the recognized expert in custom window treatments, awnings, and outdoor shading solutions. Founded in 1982 by Vince and LuAnn Nigara, alongside Vince’s cousin and business partner Bill Campesi, the company built a reputation for experience, expertise, and excellence.
Today, Window Works continues its legacy under new leadership. JC Rocha and his wife, Christie (Vince and LuAnn’s daughter) are joined by Bill, who remains an integral part of the company, along with longtime team members Carlos Martins and Kimberly Serafim, who are now partners as well.
The industry has evolved significantly. “Customization and automation are the biggest trends—both in exterior and interior products,” says JC. “Our clients want personalized designs and high-tech solutions that integrate with smart home technology.”
“Our extensive product offerings—including Roman shades, drapes, awnings, and wallcoverings— are important, but at Window Works, it’s our team of experts whose design advice, professional installation, and exceptional customer service set us apart,” says Christie.
Since the company offers trade-quality materials and products typically found in upscale hotels and luxury homes, it’s a go-to resource for interior designers and industry professionals. Instead of traveling to New York City for high-end specialized merchandise, they can find it locally -saving time and money.
Another reason for the company’s success is its commitment to customer relationships. “Our business is unique because we deliver a personalized, hands-on experience,” says Kimberly. Clients feel confident knowing they’ve made the best choices for their space and budget. “Additionally, we stand behind our work with a three-year guarantee—triple the industry standard.”
Looking ahead to spring 2025, Window Works is excited to announce their collaboration with two interior design firms in The Mansion in May Showhouse in Morris County, NJ, and The Kingston Showhouse in Bucks County, PA.

KKitchen Tune-Up couldn’t be more excited about 2025. Growth is the focus—bringing even more smiles to homeowners and expanding the business as a whole. With high targets set for the year, the team, led by owner Takia Livingston, is ready to take on even more, and with the expansion of her trained design team, expectations are high for a successful year.
This milestone is even more special as Kitchen Tune-Up celebrates its 5th anniversary in the community—a journey that began in Livingston’s basement and has since flourished into a trusted name in kitchen remodeling. Over the past five years, hundreds of kitchens have been transformed, and just as many smiles have been created.
The company exists to help homeowners fall in love with their homes all over again. With this exciting milestone, Kitchen TuneUp is also refreshing its showroom, offering an even better space for homeowners to explore ideas and bring their visions to life.
Livingston says that kitchen design is shifting toward a modern, European-inspired look. Traditional farmhouse styles are fading, replaced by sleek, contemporary designs. A major trend is carrying countertop materials up the backsplash for a seamless, high-end feel—no more separate tile. Whether quartz or marble, that continuous stone look is everywhere. Additionally, colors are shifting, with grays, dark blues, greens, and sages losing ground to warmer, richer tones. Another rising trend is furniture-style kitchen elements, like islands with legs that resemble dining tables, bringing a custom, curated feel to modern kitchens.
Kitchen Tune-Up not only designs, builds, and renovates kitchens but also guides homeowners through the entire process, making it easy to navigate decisions that will stand the test of time. According to Livingston, many homeowners want change but don’t know where to start. “That’s where Kitchen Tune-Up comes in,” she says. “The team doesn’t just sell a project and move on, we walk alongside clients, assisting with finishes, layouts, and the overall vision to ensure a seamless transformation. Kitchen Tune-Up also coordinates electricians and plumbers, making the process stress-free and hassle-free. It’s your only stop for your kitchen remodel project.”
The business stands out as a women-run company driven by a true passion for kitchens and design. Unlike many contractors who focus solely on construction, Kitchen Tune-Up offers a comprehensive service that brings together both design and craftsmanship. Instead of homeowners needing to hire both a contractor and a designer separately, Kitchen Tune-Up combines both services into one seamless experience.
According to Livingston, witnessing a client’s joy when their dream kitchen becomes reality is the most rewarding part of the process. As the company marks five years of transforming kitchens and creating lasting relationships, it looks forward to continuing to grow, innovate, and serve the community. With a busy year ahead, Kitchen Tune-Up is ready to take on new challenges, refresh more homes, and continue delivering beautiful, functional spaces that homeowners love.

RWJBARNABAS HEALTH— COOPERMAN BARNABAS MEDICAL CENTER
94 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston 973-322-5638
www.rwjbh.org/doctors/alison-grann-md/
AAs advancements in oncology reshape cancer treatment, Alison Grann, MD, Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at RWJBarnabas Health— Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, stands at the forefront of innovation. With a career dedicated to delivering state-of-the-art, patient-centered care, she eagerly anticipates a transformative 2025, marked by the highly anticipated opening of the Melchiorre Cancer Center.
This freestanding cancer center, set to open in November 2025, will house multidisciplinary oncology services under one roof, just 250 feet from Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. “It’s going to be a state-of-the-art facility with integrated care,” Dr. Grann explains. The center will house medical, surgical, and radiation oncology clinics; cuttingedge technology like an MRI linear accelerator; genetic counseling; a research team; and even a wellness-focused infrastructure including a kitchen for nutrition education and a boutique for patients in need of specialized prosthetics and wigs. “This facility enhances everything we already do while making care more accessible and patient-focused,” she adds.
Trends in cancer treatment are shifting toward individualized and targeted therapies, a shift Dr. Grann has witnessed firsthand. “Radiation treatments used to be much longer, but now, depending on the cancer type, some patients may need only one session,” she notes. Radiopharmaceuticals, which give radiation to cancer cells through an IV, and adaptive radiation treatments, which change treatment plans based on changes in the tumor in real time, are two innovations that are changing the way care is given. “These developments allow us to maximize treatment effectiveness while minimizing toxicity.”
At the heart of Dr. Grann’s work is her unwavering commitment to her patients. “It’s a privilege to take care of cancer patients and their families. Technology evolves, but the relationships I build with my patients remain the most rewarding part of my job,” she says. She also credits her dedicated team for their collective mission to provide compassionate, cutting-edge cancer care.
With a future focused on innovation and enhanced patient experience, Dr. Grann is optimistic about the next chapter in cancer care.

Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, LAc
HHave you ever wondered what makes some doctors so compassionate while others seem to lack empathy? In the case of Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, LAc, of Rose Gold Health Solutions, it’s rooted in her own personal experiences with illness and the healing process.
Dr. Rosie, who struggled with dysautonomia in her teens and twenties, knows firsthand the challenges of dealing with a condition that disrupts involuntary body functions like heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure. She faced debilitating symptoms such as migraines, fainting, and gastroparesis, which required a feeding tube for three years. “I was young and should’ve been living a vibrant life,” she shares, but instead she found herself hiding her feeding tube just to attend prom.
Her healing journey began when her uncle took her to an acupuncturist.
“Acupuncture quite literally saved my life,” she remarks, leading her to pursue a doctorate. As an acupuncturist, she specializes in treating the side effects of cancer, specifically radiation and chemotherapy. She works with a team of various practitioners specializing in healing therapies who work together to treat chronic, complex systems from every angle.
Having personally experienced the frustration of being told that her condition was something she just had to “learn to live with,” she empathizes with her patients. “I’ve experienced their pain and suffering in a very real way.” This empathy drives her to help others overcome complicated neurological conditions, chronic pain, and autoimmune diseases that often leave other medical professionals puzzled.

FOUNDER, SHARRON MILLER’S ACADEMY FOR PERFORMING ARTS (SMAPA)
SSMAPA begins its 30th year this September, having established itself as an institution in Montclair. The organization has made a significant impact not only through its in-studio dance and related theater arts programs but also through its public-school outreach initiatives. These programs serve thousands of students in underserved communities each year, playing a crucial role in fostering creativity, discipline, and self-expression. Currently, SMAPA’s residencies are in Paterson and Newark, with plans to expand outreach into Hudson County, specifically Union City, this Spring.
As the fear of COVID diminishes, individuals of all ages are starting to venture out and are committing to their health and wellness. SMAPA has witnessed an increase in participation in its seniors’ dance fitness programs, which are provided free of charge, thanks to organizational grants and donations from individual donors.
As a not-for-profit 501c3 organization, SMAPA is unique in that it has evolved from a dance school established 30 years ago. This designation allows the organization to receive grants and individual donations to fund scholarships for deserving young people. This year alone, SMAPA has awarded over $35,000 in tuition assistance. The organization’s mission remains to provide inclusive, comprehensive training in dance and related theater arts to students at all stages of life. Its holistic philosophy seeks to nurture the creative potential within every student, reinforcing the belief that if students can conceive of success and recognize their potential, it is a testament to the value and importance of the arts.

REALTOR®—COLDWELL BANKER REALTY
2 E Mount Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, NJ 07039 973-879-9467 | www.EllenGonik.com
AA highly successful Realtor® for 16 years, Ellen Gonik of Coldwell Banker Realty in Livingston represents more buyers and sellers than any other individual agent in the area. Clients know she has the expertise and experience to lead sellers to the right buyers, and to bring buyers to the closing table.
“Sellers depend on the proceeds from the sale of their home for important life events such as college education, kids’ weddings, retirement, and their next house purchase,” she says. Ellen’s listings’ average sale prices are significantly higher than the industry’s average.
She also understands how important it is to keep buyers motivated. “They may find the perfect house, but then they’re outbid. The rollercoaster of emotions is difficult, but I’m here to let them know I will not give up until their family wins a bid and lands in a comfortable home.”
She does her best to represent her clients in a couple of ways. “One is I share my exclusives with my clients, and if there’s a perfect match, then everybody wins. The second is when I’m up against other Realtors, my clients will usually get it as long as they offer a competitive amount. That’s because other Realtors know my reputation and know that this deal will be fair and make it to the closing table.”

GENTLE CARING DENTISTRY
201 S. Livingston Avenue, Livingston 973-994-3112 | gentlecaringdentistry.com
IIt is not an understatement to describe Dr. Linda Stone and her daughter, Dr. Vanna Stone, as the dynamic duo of dentistry. Their personalities and approach to dentistry create an atmosphere in which they strive to give someone a beautiful smile and a great experience at Gentle Caring Dentistry.
Dr. Linda Stone observes that when a person does not smile, others may get the wrong impression about their personality. One of the things she enjoys most about dentistry is “giving someone confidence in their smile.”
Dr. Vanna Stone underscores how women have attained positions and respect in the field. “When I went to dental school, 51% of students in my class were women. My mother only had 10% in her class.” She credits her mother as being her mentor and helping to shape her career. Dr. Vanna Stone enjoys the many aspects dentistry
affords. “It’s science and art. It involves problem solving, creativity and hand skills.”
The dentists are devoted to restoring and enhancing a patient’s smile using conservative, state-of-the-art procedures. Dr. Linda Stone assures patients that Gentle Caring Dentistry uses the best materials available. The dentists treat the gamut of dental concerns including preventative care, cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening. Dr. Vanna Stone emphasizes the importance of preventative care. “It is important to prioritize the quality of your dental health,” she says. “Dental health is huge in the overall scheme of your health.”

SPLURGE BAKERY
105 Main Street, Millburn | 973-379-0740 | splurgebakery.com
IIn 2000, Julie Winer was searching for a bakery in NYC to make personalized black and white cookies to serve at her daughter’s baby naming. That experience opened her eyes to the challenge of finding custom desserts – and from that difficult realization, Splurge Bakery was born!
Many people wonder how entrepreneurs come up with their ideas. “Look to your own life for inspiration,” Julie advises. “If you notice something missing in the marketplace, chances are others do too. But the hardest part isn’t the idea—it’s the persistence and 18-hour workdays needed to build a business. The stress on your relationships, family, personal life can be overwhelming. That’s what makes entrepreneurship so difficult, and why so many don’t succeed.”
The first 5 years were challenging but today, Splurge Bakery is celebrating 15 years in
its Millburn, NJ bake shop. “Our incredible staff is the heart of Splurge Bakery,” says Julie. “I have dedicated employees who love what they do, and we always strive to make our customers happy. People often call our store a “happy business” when they walk through the door.” She also credits their landlord, Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills, for providing support that has helped them thrive.
“You can’t do this alone,” Julie emphasizes. “You need a team that believes in you and helps you build your business alongside you. Entrepreneurship isn’t a solo journey.”
Today, Splurge Bakery is known for its custom cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and both graphic and hand decorated cookies. They also work with businesses to create logo cookies, client gifts, and celebration cakes. “We don’t just bake desserts—we create delicious memories,” says Julie.

“From custom treats to birthday parties in our shop, we help make special moments even sweeter.”
Splurge Bakery has earned recognition for its work, recently winning “Best Party Place” in Essex County and previously receiving the title of Best Bakery.
Julie says, “With the support of my clients and my team by my side, Splurge Bakery will continue offering delicious custom desserts and the best birthday parties. This is more than a business for me—we are family inspired to create delicious and beautiful memories for everyone.

IIn 2025, I am looking forward to launching our new online framing store, which will give customers a more affordable option for framing their photos and perhaps help them create a photo wall to enhance their homes.
An upcoming trend in the framing business is cutout background mat patterns, which help to add visual interest to a custom framing design. Texture mats such as linen or silk are also trending.
I do what I do because of my love of art. I have been a framer for more than 25 years. I love the interaction with clients and always try to guide them in the best possible way for their piece of art.
At Mona Lisa Framing, I specialize in preservation and conservation framing. These methods provide the client with the finest quality materials and innovative conservation techniques that will uphold the integrity and care of the art.
AAfter 35 years in business, I look forward to welcoming new clients to the Chez Barbara experience—fine foods, excellent service, and great events. I’ve noticed a growing interest in healthy cooking without preservatives, the way Chez Barbara has always done it. I treat every party as my own, paying attention to every detail. Chez Barbara was named “Most Raved About Caterer” by NJ Monthly Magazine. The catering business has been featured in Edible New Jersey; Star Ledger; NJ Savvy Living; Entrée Magazine; Guest Chef TV 3; Gourmet Magazine’s Quick Cook; Food Network Wine & Food Festival; New Jersey Bride; and Etc., Etc., Etc.
Six years ago, I launched Chez Barbara’s Culinary Kitchen at Barry’s Appliance in Bridgewater. The cooking classes are fun and educational. I use fresh and unusual products to create
unique experiences in each class. In 2025, I will start wine classes, adding another dimension to our offerings.
I believe in giving back. Over twenty years ago, as a founding member of Franciscan Charities, I initiated a soup kitchen in Newark. What began with 20 servings for 200 has grown to over 100,000 meals annually.
I am a mother of seven, three by birth and four adopted. My work in the soup kitchen revealed the flaws in the system, prompting me to become a special needs foster parent. I adopted three infants and a special needs 4-year-old. Today, I am blessed with three successful grown children and four teenagers. I was named outstanding foster and adoptive parent by New Jersey, and I’ll be honored by Families and Child Services in May.

SITTING PRETTY INTIMATES
97 South Livingston Avenue, Ste. C, Livingston | 973-251-2224 sittingprettyintimates.com
C
Christine Dutcher is passionate about making each woman feel special. With a lifelong career interest in every aspect of the intimate apparel business— from buying and selling to managing retail stores—she understands women’s unique needs.
In 2021, she opened Sitting Pretty Intimates, a welcoming environment for women of all ages and sizes. The store offers a variety of intimate apparel for women: bras, swimsuits, coverups, shapewear, lingerie, socks, and hosiery designed to make each woman feel special and uplifted. “When you look good, we look good,” says Christine.
Many women like versatility in their clothing. For example, they want a dress they can wear in various situations – to the store, to the beach, or lounging, and maybe to sleep. “We have a variety of multi-purpose clothing that our customers seek –loungewear, coverups, and sleepwear – all at prices to meet everyone’s budgets,” says Christine.
Expansion of services is one of Christine’s goals. “We may open another store in New Jersey or one in Florida in a location where many customers spend part of the year,” she says. “We want to be available to our customers year-round.”
GREEN POINT JUICERY
IS BRINGING HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS TOGETHER
AAs Green Point Juicery moves into 2025, General Manager, Natalie Lowry, is focused on strengthening community connections and expanding the offerings within the business. With locations in Verona and Morristown, the café is known for its fresh cold-pressed juices, smoothies, and vegan, gluten-free, kosher offerings.
While many customers come for healthful options, Lowry has noticed a shift—more people are turning to Green Point not just for a nutritious meal, but to make lasting lifestyle changes. And she welcomes it. “It doesn’t have to be all or nothing,” she says. “Just making one healthy choice when you can is a great start.”
What sets Green Point apart? “We make eating healthy easy and enjoyable,” Lowry says. From acai bowls to avocado toast, the menu blends nourishment with flavor, proving that healthy choices never have to compromise on taste.

A CLEAR VISION OF THE FUTURE
Decreasing the Causes and Effects of Age-Related Macular Degeneration
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
CCertified optometrist Dr. Saras Rustagi of Eye Care & Wear wants to educate people about this leading cause of vision loss— Macular Degeneration. “AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) can often progress slowly without obvious symptoms, which is why raising awareness and promoting early detection is crucial,” he says.
Early intervention can make a significant difference in managing the condition and preserving vision. While many traditional methods rely on the observation of physical symptoms, which may not show up until the disease is at an advanced stage, his practice utilizes cutting-edge technology.
“The Ret Eval ERG (Electroretinogram) is a non-invasive test that helps assess the
health of the retina, specifically detecting changes that might not be visible to the naked eye,” says Dr. Rustagi. “By using this advanced technology, we can identify early signs of macular degeneration, sometimes even before symptoms appear.” This early detection allows monitoring the condition and taking steps to slow down its progression.
Smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes can increase the risk, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial. “Eating a diet rich in leafy greens, fish high in omega-3s, and foods with antioxidants like vitamin C and E can support eye health. Also, protecting eyes from UV damage by wearing sunglasses is important.”
He also advises getting regular eye exams, especially if aged 50 and older and/or if you have a family history of macular degeneration. Contact the practice for any questions and to stay on top of your eye health.
Chronic stress can increase your lifetime risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also lead to unhealthy habits like overeating, physical inactivity and smoking while also increasing risk factors, including high blood pressure, depression and anxiety. However, a scientific statement from the American Heart Association shows reducing stress and cultivating a positive mindset can improve health and well-being.
STAY ACTIVE
Exercise is one of the easiest ways to keep your body healthy and release stress. Physical activity is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression. It can also help increase energy and improve quality of sleep. The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderateintensity activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or a combination.
MEDITATE
Incorporate meditation and mindfulness practices into your day to give yourself a few minutes to create some distance from daily stress. Some studies show meditation can reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, support the immune system and increase your ability to process information.
PRACTICE POSITIVITY
A positive mindset can improve overall health. Studies show a positive mindset can help you live longer, and happy individuals tend to sleep better, exercise more, eat better and not smoke. Practice positive self-talk to help you stay calm. Instead of saying, “everything is going wrong,” re-frame the situation and remind yourself “I can handle this if I take it one step at a time.”
SHOW GRATITUDE
Gratitude - or thankfulness - is a powerful tool that can reduce levels of depression and anxiety and improve sleep. Start by simply writing down three things you’re grateful for each day.
FIND A FURRY FRIEND
Having a pet may help you get more fit; lower stress, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar; and boost overall happiness and well-being. When you see, touch, hear or talk to companion animals, you may feel a sense of goodwill, joy, nurturing and happiness. At the same time, stress hormones are suppressed. Dog ownership is also associated with a lower risk of depression, according to research published by the American Heart Association.

Secrets to A HAPPY LIFE
BY BARRY FARBER
M
Many years ago, I interviewed one of the most successful investment bankers on Wall Street on my first tv show, Diamonds in the Rough. We were talking about the fact that he had created hundreds of millionaires and then he said something to me so profound. He told me that many of them were miserable and unhappy after reaching this monetary milestone. Then he said this.
”Success without happiness is the worst type of failure.”
Morty Davis, is a rags to riches story and one of the first billionaires on Wall Street.
Bobby Jones, a Hall of Fame golf legend who was considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, insisted, “Competitive golf is played on a five-inch course that resides between one’s two ears.“
“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination” (Carl Rogers). Through all of life’s challenges, in order to be happy, learn to see and appreciate the good and to retain a positive attitude. “No life is so hard that it can’t be made easier by the way you take it.” as Art Linkletter said, “Things turn out best for the people who make the best out of the way things turn out.“
“Some people think of the glass as half full. Some people think of the glass as half empty. I think of the glass as too big.”
–George Carlin
Performing five random acts of kindness a day for six weeks has been shown to boost happiness, as has spending money on others. When one performs good deeds and experiences a helper’s High, we not only feel greater happiness in the moment, we may also be more likely to give again in the future.
When you feel stressed out, when everyone seems to be leaving you, when the world seems to be fading away in the mist, when your life feels like a big blur, when you have lost clarity, when you can’t seem to retain focus, when you’ve lost your vision and perspective, please let me know; I will take you to an eye specialist for a check-up.
Barry Farber
When I speak with Morty now he is fired with enthusiasm and a deep love for his over 100 grandchildren and great grandchildren. His attitude and passion for life comes through in all that surrounds him. The exciting news is he’s written an amazing book called, HAPPINESS GUARANTEED OR YOUR MISERY BACK! 365 days of inspiration and humor. Love that title! I read through this 365 page massive collection of great stories, quotes, life strategies, humor and more. You can read a page a day or start anywhere in the book. Here are some of the highlights I thought you would enjoy:
Make the necessary, personal investment in self-education and training. Pain serves a purpose. Athletes say, “no pain, no gain” in one’s body pain is a signal that something is wrong and we need to take action to correct it. If we did not possess that mechanism, we would be robbed of the warning system that help help us survive.
The above excerpt from the book is probably one of the most critical ones to study. When it comes to your own happiness, the ability to embrace chaos, pain and adversity provides us with many benefits. It allows you to sift through the information to find the intelligence to move forward more effectively. As they say…in order to see the rainbow you have to put up with the rain. One needs the courage to act in the face of adversity that eventually becomes the happiness we all seek.
“The secret to happiness is freedom. The secret to freedom is courage.”
-Thucydides
