Ready to dance without the pressure of competition? Doorstep Dance, founded by Livingston resident Charley Goren and her friends, all Livingston High School freshmen— Sophia Zelinsky, Sloane Kasner, Jessica Marks, Olivia Brom, Kayli Chan, and Orly Zarabi—offers a joyful and inclusive dance program for kids ages 5-11. These high school freshmen bring years of dance experience to their lessons, focusing on fun and accessible dance sessions right at your home or as an afterschool enrichment program at Mount Pleasant Elementary.

From hip hop to acro, ballet, and jazz, their eight-week sessions for $100 are far more affordable than traditional studios.

Classes are small, with two to three instructors for personalized attention, and no fancy equipment is needed—just a love for movement and music. “We want kids to experience the joy of dancing without the pressure,” Charley shares. The group choreographs original dance combos and even offers recitals for families. It’s all about bringing joy, confidence, and connection through dance!

Caldwell Local Writes Guide to Driving to Disney Like a Road Warrior

Bellomo, an actor-turnedwriter, wrote the book in just four days, inspired by years of trial and error on the road. His goal? To help families avoid common travel pitfalls and create lasting memories on the way to Disney. With decades of road-tripping experience, Bellomo’s guide eliminates the uncertainty from the drive, ensuring the journey to Disney is as smooth and enjoyable as the destination itself. The book is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

After decades of driving I-95 between New Jersey and Florida to visit his wife’s family in Miami—and making frequent stops at Disney World—John Bellomo of Caldwell, NJ, turned his hard-earned travel wisdom into a book. Road Trip Disney: The Guide of How to Travel I-95 Like a Road Warrior offers practical tips for families, covering everything from safe rest stops and diaper-changing stations to navigating unpredictable weather and choosing the best exits.

West Orange Resident Creates Board Game About Kindness

James Koehne of West Orange has always been passionate about board games, and, in 2023, he decided to create one of his own. His game, Fishing for Compliments, designed with kindness in mind, encourages players to uplift one another through positive words.

Koehne’s love for games began in childhood when he played everything from classics to hidden gems with family. That passion carried through his life, from loving Scrabble in middle school to facilitating game nights in college. He was also inspired by his maternal grandfather, a chemist known for his creativity and positivity.

The game features two phases: one where players write compliments about each other and another where players can earn points for writing the most meaningful compliments. Set to launch this year, Fishing for Compliments should be available online and at local events, spreading positivity one compliment at a time. Follow @koehnesgames on social media for more.

The Livingston Softball League is back for another exciting season, starting the week of April 7! Registration is open, and new players are encouraged to join. “Whether joining as a full-time player or a sub for occasional games, there’s a place for everyone,” says league liaison Cristina Schepis, a member of the Ballbusters team.

After a four-year hiatus, the League was successfully revived last year, bringing together six teams and over 80 women. While based in Livingston, the League, which is open to women 30+, welcomes players from other towns too. “Participating provides a great opportunity to stay active, build friendships, and enjoy some friendly competition,” says Cristina.

She adds, “We have some wonderful sponsors this year – Teresa Losi of Weichert Realtors Livingston, Dr. Ray Giordano of 4EverYoung anti-aging and wellness solutions, and Ellen Gonik, of Coldwell Banker. Their support truly makes a difference and makes joining the league even more accessible.”

Looking ahead, the Essex County Environmental Center remains dedicated to preserving green spaces and educating the next generation. Here’s to 20 more years of growth, learning, and environmental advocacy!

A LIFE OF GIVING: One Women’s Mission to Uplift Women, Mothers, and Cancer Warriors

FBelyne Louis-Jacques of West Orange believes in the power of transformation. Whether she’s amplifying the voices of cancer warriors, empowering mothers, or helping women balance career and family, her life’s work is centered around uplifting others.

Despite juggling a full-time marketing career, a business, a podcast, and motherhood, Belyne still makes time to give back. She’s not just supporting causes— she’s creating real change.

GIVING CANCER WARRIORS A DAY TO SHINE

For cancer patients, treatments take priority over everything else. Self-care, confidence, and joy can feel like distant memories. But once a year, Glamming the Warrior gives them back those moments of beauty and strength.

Glamming the Warrior honorees strike a pose during the magazine cover photoshoot with founder, Rochelle-R E Magno. Back row: Ryan Lynch. Center Row L-R: Bernidine Johnson, Donna Trimblett, Manija Mayel. Front Row Sitting L-R: Brooke Hansson, Rochelle-R. E. Magno, and Aeisha Robinson.

Founded by Rochelle Magno, Glamming the Warrior was inspired by Magno’s personal connections to cancer patients—clients who confided in her about how they missed feeling like themselves. She created an event where those undergoing treatment could experience a day of pampering, styling, and a magazine cover photoshoot—culminating in an emotional gala celebrating their transformations.

BELYNE KNEW SHE HAD TO BE PART OF THIS MISSION.

“When I saw what Glamming the Warrior was doing—giving these warriors a chance to feel powerful again—I wanted to help however I could,” she says.

Belyne volunteers her PR expertise to secure media coverage that helps the nonprofit expand its reach. But more than that, she is a fierce advocate, using her platforms to amplify the voices of those who often go unheard.

“This organization that Rochelle has created is truly remarkable,” Belyne shares. “These warriors, both women and men, come in unsure, maybe even a little hesitant. By the end of their glamming experience, they’re radiant, standing taller, seeing themselves as the beautiful warriors they are, not just patients.”

GIVING BACK IN EVERY WAY: SUPPORTING AND UPLIFTING MOTHERS

Belyne’s commitment to helping others extends to her own businesses. She founded Mom’s Recovery, a postpartum care brand dedicated to helping new mothers heal. “So often, moms are told to just push through,” Belyne says. “I wanted to remind them that their recovery matters too.”

She also created Mommy & Be, a podcast dedicated to supporting mothers as they navigate career, entrepreneurship, and family life. Through candid conversations with inspiring women, she offers real stories of triumph, struggles, and balance.

“I started Mommy & Be because I know how isolating it can feel to try to ‘do it all,’” she explains. “There’s so much pressure on moms, but I want them to know they’re not alone.”

A LIFE DEDICATED TO EMPOWERING OTHERS

Even with a full schedule, Belyne never stops showing up for the causes she cares about. Whether she’s giving new moms the tools to prioritize self-care, or sharing the stories of inspiring women, her mission remains the same: to empower, uplift, and amplify voices that need to be heard.

“I believe in showing up for people,” Belyne says. “If I can use my skills—whether in marketing, PR, or storytelling—to help make someone’s life a little better, then I know I’m doing what I’m meant to do.”

HONORING A LEGACY: A Family’s Mission to Help Others Through Horses

IIn the wake of loss, Lori Weiss, her husband Ron, owners of Weiss Design Group Inc, in Livingston, and Madison Rose’s (Maddy) brother, Taylor, sought to honor their beloved daughter and sister, Madison Rose. They found their answer where Madison had always found comfort—among horses.

An accomplished equestrian, Madison found solace and confidence in horses despite struggling with anxiety and other developmental issues. Her passion for riding continued into adulthood, even as she built a career in fashion design in Los Angeles.

When Madison passed away at 28 in August 2021, Lori and Ron wanted to preserve their daughter’s spirit in a meaningful way. Since horses had been transformative in Madison’s life, they established The Madison Rose Fund for Therapeutic Riding, dedicated to supporting therapeutic horseback riding programs.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE THROUGH THERAPEUTIC RIDING

Therapeutic riding improves the lives of individuals with autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, and other

disabilities, fostering confidence, independence, and physical strength. Funds are raised for PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship)-certified centers, ensuring high standards and accessibility for participants. They currently support Unicorn Therapeutic Riding, TRAC at Centenary University, HRH of New Jersey, and Hoofbeatz at Flying Bee Farms, where Lori is personally involved as a volunteer.

A PERSONAL COMMITMENT TO HOOFBEATZ

Among the programs Lori supports, Hoofbeatz at Flying Bee Farms in Augusta, NJ, is closest to her heart. The barn developed an equine therapy nonprofit under the tutelage of 40-year veteran and PATH-certified instructor, Maryann Brando and owner Robin Drews, providing services to individuals with disabilities.

Therapeutic programs extend beyond riding. Equine-Assisted Learning helps children with ADHD and dyslexia build reading skills and confidence. Ground-based activities like obstacle courses strengthen both physical and mental abilities for those unable to ride.

One inspiring example is a 45-year-old man with a traumatic brain injury whom Lori sponsors. After a severe accident, he never fully recovered, but 11 years of therapeutic riding have given him renewed purpose. Recently certified for para-dressage, his dream is to compete in the Special Olympics.

SNEAKER DRIVES AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Through private donations and fundraisers, Lori has raised a generous sum to date. One of her efforts is a sneaker collection drive with Got Sneakers, which helps raise funds while also recycling footwear.

So far, she has collected over 200 pairs. “It’s a win-win,” Lori says. “People can declutter, and the environment benefits.” Got Sneakers donates wearable shoes to those in need and recycles unwearable pairs. The drive is ongoing, with sneakers accepted at Lori’s home in North Caldwell.

A LIFE REMEMBERED

Through their work, Lori, Ron and Taylor ensure Madison’s compassionate spirit lives on—in every child who gains confidence on horseback, every family that receives support, and every volunteer who lends a hand.

Their story is one of resilience, love, and the power of turning loss into hope. By giving back, they keep Madison’s light shining— one hoofbeat at a time.

Paintings Take You to Places in the Heart

WWe all have places in which we are happy, content, and at peace with the world. The meticulously crafted paintings of West Orange resident Denis Orloff take us to his, and in that journey, it’s as if we can’t help finding our way to ours as well.

Taking his inspiration from the Catskill farm his family owns and putting it to work: “I have always been drawn to the light”, he says. “Light is everything. Sunrises and the fading light of twilight; I believe that the depiction of light is one of the hardest and most gratifying things I can do in a painting.” Orloff believes that this special light brings up feelings of nostalgia and other deep emotions. And that it does when depicted by him in his remarkable paintings.

Summer Camp Builds

Self-Esteem in Kids & Teens

SSummer camp isn’t just about canoe rides, campfires, and s’mores—though those are definitely perks. It’s also a powerful environment for building self-esteem in children and teens. Away from the pressures of school, social media, and everyday routines, camp offers a fresh setting where kids can grow into more confident, independent versions of themselves. At camp, kids are gently nudged to try new things—whether it’s climbing a rock wall, learning archery, or performing in a talent show. These experiences are designed to challenge them in a supportive environment. Every time a child pushes past their fears and succeeds (or even just tries), it reinforces the belief: “I can do hard things.”

Being away from home encourages kids to manage their own schedules, belongings, and personal hygiene. It might seem minor, but these little responsibilities add up. When a child realizes they can navigate daily life on their own, they gain a strong sense of independence, which is key to self-esteem. Without the constant distraction (and comparison) of social media, kids have the chance to reconnect with themselves and others in a real, grounded way. This disconnection from digital pressure often allows self-esteem to flourish naturally, rooted in real experiences and real feedback.

Camp friendships are often built on shared experiences, teamwork, and authenticity. Kids meet others from different backgrounds, learn to collaborate, and often form bonds that boost their social confidence. In a community where individuality is celebrated, campers feel seen and valued for who they are—not just for how they perform.

Camp counselors often act as mentors, offering encouragement, guidance, and emotional support. They model healthy self-esteem and provide affirmation in moments of doubt. For many campers, having a trusted adult outside of their family believe in them can be lifechanging.

Summer camp is more than just fun—it’s a meaningful journey of self-discovery and growth. Through adventure, connection, and new experiences, campers return home with more than just memories; they come back with a stronger sense of self-worth and the confidence to face life’s challenges.

NJPAC’s education initiative is one of New Jersey’s largest providers of arts education programs for children, annually reaching almost 100,000 students (from Pre-K to Grade 12), teachers and families. Thousands of New Jersey kids who experience worldclass performances on Arts Center stages go on to classes where they can study dance, jazz, acting, musical theater, hip hop arts and culture, and more.

GYRO WORLD

Brings a Taste of Greek and Mediterranean Cuisines to The Caldwells

YYANNI ARVANITOPOULOS’ PASSION FOR FOOD AND COMMUNITY IS EVIDENT THE MOMENT YOU STEP INTO HIS RESTAURANT, GYRO WORLD, IN CALDWELL. THE AROMA OF SIZZLING MEATS, FRESHLY BAKED PITA, AND FRAGRANT GREEK SPICES IMMEDIATELY TRANSPORTS DINERS TO A GREEK ISLAND. SINCE OPENING ITS DOORS ON JUNE 1, 2024, THE RESTAURANT HAS QUICKLY BECOME A FAVORITE AMONG LOCALS, WHO RAVE ABOUT ITS FRESH INGREDIENTS, HOMEMADE RECIPES, AND WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE.

With three successful locations in New York, Yanni decided to bring Gyro world to NJ, starting with Caldwell and soon expanding to Livingston. Walking through the doors, customers are met with the comforting hum of conversation, the clinking of plates, and the sight of warm, inviting decor reminiscent of a traditional Greek taverna. Exceptional Greek hospitality is at the heart of the experience, making every visitor feel like part of the family.

The menu is filled with Greek staples, featuring customer favorites like the beef and lamb gyro sandwich, chicken souvlaki kebabs, spanakopita, and fresh Greek salads. Whether dining in, ordering takeout, or catering an event, guests can always expect a meal rooted in tradition and authenticity. Every bite is a testament to the generations-old recipes that Yanni and his team carefully preserve.

Gyro World offers a variety of meal options, including soups, salads, pita sandwiches, burgers, platters, and traditional Greek desserts. Every dish is crafted using fresh ingredients, Greek-imported spices, and high-quality meats sourced from a butcher shop. His dedication to quality is deeply personal—his 80-year-old mother is an integral part of the kitchen, helping to prepare homemade Greek dishes that keep the restaurant’s flavors as authentic as those found in Greece.

The Caldwell location transforms into an intimate venue for birthday parties, wedding celebrations, and other special occasions. The dining area can be reserved for gatherings, allowing guests to enjoy a festive and personalized experience. Outdoor seating is also available, giving diners the chance to savor their meals al fresco when weather permits.

Beyond the food, Yanni prioritizes fostering a strong community. “Once people come in, they feel like family,” he says. That philosophy extends to his commitment to local initiatives. Gyro World proudly sponsors Caldwell High School’s basketball and swim teams, regularly donates to school tricky trays, and participates in Caldwell University’s dining experience, where students can enjoy meals at the restaurant every Wednesday.

Yanni Arvanitopoulos

Yanni’s dedication to authenticity and excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed. Gyro World recently won two prestigious Suburban Essex awards: “Best New Restaurant” and “Best Mediterranean Restaurant.” The restaurant was also featured on CBS New York in a Small Business Saturday segment, highlighting its rapid success and growing popularity. These accolades reflect the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

As Yanni looks ahead to the Livingston expansion, he remains dedicated to delivering top-tier Greek cuisine with the same passion and care that has made Gyro World a beloved name. With its warm hospitality, fresh flavors, and rich culinary heritage, Gyro World continues to attract loyal customers who appreciate an authentic Mediterranean dining experience.

Open daily, Gyro World is more than just a place to eat—it’s a destination where food, culture, and community come together. For those looking to experience authentic Greek cuisine and genuine hospitality, Gyro World is the perfect place to savor the flavors of the Mediterranean while feeling right at home.

Celebrating Five Years of Transforming Homes

FFounded in 2019, Kitchen Tune-Up recently marked its five-year anniversary with a week of celebrations, reflecting on its journey from purchasing the franchise and starting operations from a home office to now being an established and locally trusted name in kitchen remodeling. The milestone was commemorated with two events: a private gathering on March 7 for key partners and an open house on March 9 for the community.

Kitchen Tune-Up was founded with a clear vision: to redefine the experience of kitchen remodeling and create a one-stop solution for homeowners looking to update their kitchens. “We take care of everything— from design to selections and installation. All you do is open the front door and let us in. Our process is seamless and stress-

free,” says co-owner Steven Livingston, who owns the business with his wife, Takia.

The anniversary events brought together realtors, interior designers, vendor partners, and local supporters. Past clients also attended, sharing heartfelt stories about how Kitchen Tune-Up transformed their homes. One client, among the company’s first, expressed continued love for her now, 5-year-old kitchen. Another shared how his late wife had gifted their family a kitchen remodel, a space they still cherish daily.

For the Livingstons, the anniversary was a reminder of the deeper impact of Kitchen Tune-Up’s work. “We aim to provide great service, but it’s more than that. Hearing from clients about how our work has improved their lives makes it all worthwhile,” Steven shared.

Kitchen Tune-Up specializes in making kitchen remodeling seam less, from custom designs, cabinet painting, and cabinet refacing to countertops, flooring, and lighting. Looking ahead, the company is expanding its expertise to bathrooms with the recent acquisition of the Bath Tune-Up franchise, launching in the coming months.

As they celebrate five years, Kitchen Tune-Up remains dedicated to enhancing homes and delivering exceptional experiences—one kitchen (and soon, one bathroom) at a time.

Spring Cleaning for Patio Furniture

Patio furniture is a great way to add style and comfort to your outdoor space, but regular cleaning is essential to keep your patio furniture looking its best, and it’s also a great way to extend the life of your pieces. Pelican Shops share tips for cleaning your patio furniture to make it shine.

Start by sweeping or brushing off any loose dirt or debris. This will make it easier to see which areas need the most attention. Use mild detergent and warm water to clean the furniture. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can damage the finish or fade the color. A solution of mild dish soap and warm water works well for most types of patio furniture.

Use a soft-bristled brush or a cloth to scrub the furniture. A toothbrush can also come in handy for reaching tight spaces or crevices. Rinse the furniture thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. Dry the furniture with a clean cloth or let it air dry in the sun.

If your patio furniture has cushions, remove them, and clean them separately. Most cushions can be spot cleaned with mild detergent and warm water. For metal furniture, you can use a

rust remover if you notice any rust stains. For wooden furniture, you can use a wood cleaner to help maintain its natural color and protect it from moisture and other elements. To protect your patio furniture from future damage, you can use a protective patio furniture cover or store it in a dry, covered area when not in use.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your patio furniture looking like new for many years to come. Remember to clean your patio furniture regularly, as dirt and grime can build up quickly and become harder to remove over time. And remember, if you are not sure about what cleaner to use, always check the manufacturer’s instructions first. Happy Cleaning!

Native Plants Are Beneficial for New Jersey’s Environment

Native plants are essential for preserving the environment in New Jersey, known as the “Garden State” for its rich biodiversity. These plants are adapted to local climates and ecosystems, making them easier to grow and more sustainable than non-native species.

By utilizing native plants, residents can create vibrant, low-maintenance gardens that require less watering, fertilization, and pesticides. One key benefit of native plants is their support for local wildlife. Many are vital for pollinators like bees and butterflies. For instance, the Purple Violet, New Jersey’s State Flower, attracts pollinators and provides food for other wildlife. Additionally, native plants create habitats for birds and insects, enhancing biodiversity.

Native species also help mitigate climate change effects. They are resilient to droughts and temperature fluctuations, conserving water and reducing the need for chemicals. Moreover, planting native plants helps protect New Jersey’s ecosystems by preventing erosion, improving soil health, and filtering rainwater. Promoting native plants preserves the state’s natural beauty and ecological balance, benefiting the environment and its residents.

EV Charger Installations Should Only Be Done By a Licenced Electrician

George Anderson, the owner of Anderson Electronic, says there has been an uptick in home EV charger installations over the past two years. Anderson Electric installs 2-3 a week at people’s homes.

“Homeowners should not try to install an EV charger themselves,” he says. “EV chargers draw a lot of power. Most homes must have their existing service upgraded to at least 200 amps in order to accommodate an EV charger, and this should always be done by a licensed electrician.”

Having a home EV charger that is 240 volts is beneficial because it is more powerful than the type that come with electric vehicles and plug into existing 120 volt receptacles. They can take up to 16 hours to fully charge a vehicle, while a dedicated home EV charger only takes between 2-4 hours.

In addition, having an EV charger installed at home is more convenient than having to drive to a public location and wait for hours for the vehicle to charge. “The convenience of being able to park your car in your garage while it charges overnight justifies the cost of having one installed at home,” says George.

Right now is a great time to have an EV charger installed because utility companies like PSE&G are offering up to a $1,500 rebate to do so. George says this is a great deal because an EV charger install can cost between $500 to $2500.00 depending on the degree of difficulty, with the average installbeing in the $500 to $1,500 range.

Declutter and Recycle Clean Out for a Greener Tomorrow

When it’s time to clean out unwanted items and debris from your garage, attic, basement or any room in your home, don’t get overwhelmed—get organized.

First decide what you need to get rid of and what you want to do with your items– donate, discard or recycle. Purchase a package of colored dot stickers at an office supply store, and use them to color-code the items by category. This simple procedure will help get you started.

Research your donations to see if local charities accept your items. Also, find out if they pick up or you have to transport them.

Recycle what you can. Champion Waste recycles cardboard, paper, magazines, copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, cast-iron and car and truck batteries. Champion Waste generally discounts removing recyclables, especially appliances, since there is no dumping charge for them. In May and September/ October, Essex County runs an electronics drop off day if you want to purge outdated home electronics.

Finally, determine if you can put your discards out for curb collection, if you want to rent a dumpster or you need to hire a clean-out service to take full control of your project.

Champion Waste can access your needs, give you advice and an estimate for your clean-out project. They offer container services with smaller trucks so they can fit dumpsters in places where the bigger trucks can’t. They also do live loads with a truck and crew to remove everything on the spot. They service clients that are just purging during the spring and fall, and those that are putting their house on the market.

Turn Your Patio into an Outdoor Room

WWith a little creativity, your patio can become more than just a place to sit—it can be a true extension of your home. Transforming your patio into an outdoor room adds comfort, function, and style to your outdoor living space.

Start by defining the space with an outdoor rug and some comfortable furniture. Think cozy seating with weatherresistant cushions, a coffee table, and maybe even a side table or ottoman. Add throw pillows and blankets for warmth and texture.

Lighting is key to creating ambiance. String lights, lanterns, or even an outdoor floor lamp can turn your patio into a magical evening retreat. Don’t forget greenery—potted plants, hanging baskets, or a vertical garden can bring color and life to your space.

Finish the look with a fire pit, outdoor heater, or a shade umbrella to make the space usable throughout the seasons. Whether you’re hosting friends or enjoying a quiet evening alone, your patio can become your new favorite “room” in the house.

Choosing the Right Roofing Material for Durability, Efficiency, and Style

SSelecting the right roofing material is crucial for homeowners in Northern New Jersey, where the climate brings hot summers, cold winters, and occasional heavy snowfall. The best roofing choice balances durability, energy efficiency, and aesthetics while withstanding the region’s seasonal extremes.

Popular options include asphalt shingles, metal, and tile. Asphalt shingles are the most common choice in the area due to their affordability and versatility, but they have a moderate lifespan. While initially more expensive, metal roofs offer superior durability and are excellent for shedding snow and resisting wind. Tile roofing, including clay and concrete, provides exceptional insulation, keeping homes cooler in summer and warmer in winter. However, its weight requires proper structural support.

Given Northern New Jersey’s fluctuating temperatures, energy-efficient roofing is a wise investment. Reflective metal and

cool asphalt shingles reduce heat absorption, lowering cooling costs in summer. Additionally, proper insulation in roofing materials helps retain warmth in winter, easing the burden on heating systems. Many homeowners also turn to sustainable options like recycled shingles or green roofs, which support environmental conservation.

Architectural style matters as well. Traditional Colonial and Victorian homes in the area often pair well with slate or

wood shake, while modern designs in urban areas may favor sleek metal. Consulting a local roofing contractor ensures you select the best material for longevity, efficiency, and curb appeal. Investing in the right roof enhances wwhome value, withstands the elements, and provides long-term savings for homeowners.

Spring Cleanup Checklist

Get Your Lawn & Garden Ready for the Season

AAs winter fades and the days grow longer, everyone is eager to refresh their landscapes for the vibrant spring season. A wellplanned spring cleanup is essential for maintaining a healthy and attractive lawn, garden and landscape. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a comprehensive checklist to ensure your outdoor space is ready to flourish.

Assess Your Landscape

Before diving into yard work, take a walk around your property to evaluate winter damage. Look for broken tree branches, frostheaved plants, compacted soil, and areas where water may have pooled. Identifying these issues early will help you address them efficiently.

Remove Debris and Clean Up Beds

Winter leaves behind fallen branches, twigs, and dead leaves that can smother new growth. Raking and removing this debris improves air circulation and prevents mold or pest infestations. Pay special attention to garden beds, ensuring they are free from weeds and decaying plant matter.

Prune and Trim Trees and Shrubs

Early spring is the perfect time to prune trees and shrubs before new growth begins. Trim dead or damaged branches to promote healthy development. In Essex and Morris Counties, common trees such as maples, dogwoods, and oaks benefit from strategic pruning to enhance their shape and vitality.

Prepare Your Lawn

A lush, green lawn starts with proper preparation:

• Rake and dethatch: Remove dead grass and thatch buildup to allow nutrients and moisture to reach the soil.

• Aerate the soil: If your lawn feels compacted, aeration will help improve root growth and water absorption.

• Overseed bare spots: Spread grass seed in patchy areas to encourage thick, even growth.

• Apply fertilizer and pre-emergent weed control: Spring fertilization provides essential nutrients, while pre-emergent weed control helps prevent crabgrass and other invasive species.

Refresh Mulch and Edging

Mulching garden beds helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Use natural mulch like shredded bark or wood chips, applying a fresh layer around trees, shrubs, and flower beds. Define bed edges with a clean cut to create a polished look.

Inspect and Repair Hardscapes

Winter’s freeze-thaw cycles can take a toll on patios, walkways, retaining walls, and driveways. Check for cracks, shifting pavers, or loose stones. Pressure wash surfaces to remove dirt and mildew, restoring the beauty of your hardscaping.

Check Your Irrigation System

Before the growing season kicks into high gear, inspect your irrigation system for leaks, broken sprinkler heads, or clogged nozzles. Adjust settings to ensure efficient watering and prevent overuse.

Landscape Lighting Inspection and Repair

Outdoor lighting enhances both the aesthetics and security of your property. Inspect your landscape lighting system for any damaged fixtures, exposed wiring, or burnt-out bulbs. Clean lenses and adjust the positioning of lights to maximize their effectiveness. If necessary, consider upgrading to energyefficient LED options for long-lasting and cost-effective illumination.

Plant New Flowers and Shrubs

Spring is the ideal time to introduce new plants to your landscape. In New Jersey, native perennials like blackeyed Susans, coneflowers, and hydrangeas thrive in local conditions. Choose colorful annuals like pansies and petunias for vibrant seasonal displays.

Schedule Landscaping Services

For homeowners or businesses seeking expert care, professional landscaping services can save time and ensure top-quality results. MALA SHAH

Balance is Everything

TThe Art education of this Glen Ridge resident led her to a logical career path: Medicine. Growing up in Smithtown, NY, she always had a sketchbook with her, filling it with portraits or cartoons from when she was ten years old. When it came time for college, Shah was accepted to and attended a program at Muhlenberg College that partnered with Drexel University’s College of Medicine, and after finishing two years of Pre-Med studies, spent the next two years as an Art major, even spending time in Peruja, Italy studying Art. After which, she headed to medical school. At the graduation awards ceremony from medical school, she won Best Artist in Medical School. Laughing, she confesses: “They may have made that one up just for me.”

While managing to find some time for her Art during a four-year medical residency at Lenox Hill Hospital and after in her practice, it was the birth of her children that ignited her passion again for creating Art in a concerted way. Currently, she divides her time between her practice of radiology with a specialization in breast cancer and creating Art that celebrates the lives of children. “Radiology,” she says, “is very visual. It’s all about light and contrast.” As is her Art.

In Fly Away, a 13x8-inch watercolor and gouache painting on paper made in 2025, the image was inspired by a video she made of her children playing with kites in the park. The child in the painting is based on her daughter at 8 years old, and the child’s movement with the kite is almost balletic. You can feel the wind in the kite and the girl’s dress.

Two years ago, a trip with her children to India inspired Village Games, a 12x9 charcoal, colored pencil, and pastel drawing on paper made in 2024. While the idea for the drawing was inspired by a photograph she made of a couple of kids, the game and the setting were all self-generated.

It’s hard not to hear the music when you see Sunshine and Blues. This 11x8-inch watercolor on paper painting is inspired by the artist’s 9-year-old son, who is an avid piano player. We can feel the sunshine coming into the room as the young musician is lost in a reverie of his music.

In all of Mala Shah’s recent work, we see her observations not only of childhood but also of the balance of light and contrast. We can appreciate the balance she finds in celebrating life as an artist… and saving it as a physician.

You wake up some days and can’t get out of bed. Most evenings the pain is so intense you can’t even make dinner for your family. The exhaustion takes over and covers you like a heavy blanket. And of course depression hits: you can’t clean your house or play with your kids. You wonder if you’re any good to anybody like this. This is life with Fibromyalgia. And it was everyday life for Kelly C. of Verona, NJ.

“I would spend my days in bed as the pain traveled to different parts of my body. Often it would feel as though there were bugs scurrying under my skin, a sensation I wish on no one. Look, I knew my family needed me, and it was devastating to disappoint them day after day because I didn’t feel well,” shares Kelly.

Fibromyalgia is a complicated and chronic condition that disrupts the lives of over 4 million people in the U.S. Because of inconsistent and all-encompassing symptoms, fibromyalgia remains one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose and treat. Ultimately, it becomes a diagnosis of exclusion. Scans show nothing, tests come back inconclusive, and your questions don’t have answers so the doctors diagnose you with “fibro.”

A majority of practitioners will recommend anti-inflammatory diets, increasing your intake of magnesium, or prescribe prescription medications that come with a slew of uncomfortable side effects. All of these are band-aids, masking the symptoms rather than fixing them.

“All the doctors and specialists I met with couldn’t offer me a real solution. Some even had the audacity to tell me that my pain was all in my head. I had never felt so defeated and disrespected. I started doing my own research—reading articles that told me to go gluten-free and eliminate toxins even in my face wash. I did all of it and didn’t find any reliet However, I was having such a hard time focusing and concentrating. I’m not entirely confident in anything I did.”

Kelly’s story is not uncommon amongst those suffering from fibromyalgia. The pain is inconsistent and unrelenting, causing debilitating chronic fatigue and brain fog, something the afflicted not-so affectionately refer to as ‘fibro fog.’ There are a few suggested causes for fibromyalgia including genetics, infections, and physical trauma, but so much about this disease is still so unknown that it has been dubbed the ‘invisible illness.’ Until now!

“I saw something on TV featuring Dr. Rosie and her work with Fibromyalgia. At this point, I was willing to try anything. And thank God I did. Going to Rose Gold Wellness has allowed me to go from surviving to truly thriving!” Kelly exclaims. “Since starting treatment, I went from not being able to cook dinner for my family to cooking for my daughter’s entire graduation party and playing slip-n-slide with two dozen teenagers.

I was even able to go visit my mother for the first time in two years! Before I was unable to make the ride because it put me in too much pain. l even hugged her!”

And why do Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold have a 90% success rate in treating Fibromyalgia?

Dr. Rosie shares all. “In addition to acupuncture, which has been used to treat pain for thousands of years, we use ATP Resonance Bio Therapy®. It’s a cutting edge technology that targets specific tissues in the body. It then reprograms them for optimal performance. We have protocols for a myriad of chronic conditions from neuropathy to tendonitis. We can even target the pain and inflammation caused by fibromyalgia.”

It’s in combining her decades of experience, the time-tested science of acupuncture, and modern medical solutions like ATP Resonance Bio Therapy® that Rose Gold Wellness of Montclair are giving much needed relief to those suffering with fibromyalgia and other complicated, chronic conditions. Because Dr. Rosie designs very personalized treatment programs for each of her patients, an initial consultation is required in order to receive treatment. UNLOCK RADIANT SKIN:

Getting a good night’s sleep is not just a luxury; it’s a fundamental aspect of maintaining vibrant, healthy skin. While you rest, your body works hard to repair and renew skin cells. This natural renewal process helps heal and rejuvenate your skin, giving you a youthful glow.

Quality sleep boosts circulation, ensuring that essential nutrients and oxygen reach your skin. This results in a radiant complexion that reflects your inner health. A well-rested body is better equipped to combat inflammation. This means fewer breakouts and redness, leading to clearer and calmer skin. Sleep also plays a crucial role in regulating hormones like cortisol, the stress hormone known to wreak havoc on your skin. Lower cortisol levels lead to reduced oil production and fewer issues like acne.

Adequate sleep allows your body to maintain hydration more effectively, preventing that dry, lackluster appearance and promoting a plump, nourished complexion. A restorative night’s sleep reduces dark circles and puffiness under your eyes, leaving you looking refreshed and alert. Sleep strengthens your skin’s protective barrier, making it more resilient against environmental stressors and pollution, ensuring long-term skin health.

Prioritizing sleep lowers stress levels, which can lead to fewer stress-related skin issues and an overall improvement in your skin’s appearance. By embracing healthy sleep habits, you can unlock the secret to glowing, youthful skin and enhance your overall wellbeing.

EXPERIENCE TRUE PILATES WITH MADKAT’S EXPERT GUIDANCE

MMadeline Soglin, owner of MadKat Pilates, is the real deal when it comes to having a Pilates pedigree. She and her instructors teach the classical Romana’s Pilates method, which was handed down directly from Joseph Pilates. Madeline personally trained with Romana Kryzanowska and her daughter, Sari Mejia Santo.

Her methods are the basis of MadKat’s custom workouts for their clients. The exercises are designed to strengthen the deep abdominal muscles, increase flexibility, and teach increased awareness of the breath and alignment of the spine.

Perhaps that’s why MadKat Pilates has won the gold medal for Best Pilates Studio eleven consecutive times. MadKat and Maddie have helped clients achieve true physical well-being, strength, and inner balance. Read over the testimonials from clients who find themselves stronger, healthier, more flexible, and agile. As one client said, “I feel that at MadKat, for the first time, I am really learning what Pilates is.”

Staying Active During Pregnancy

A Path to Wellness for Mother and Baby

Maintaining an active lifestyle during pregnancy offers numerous benefits for both mother and baby. Regular exercise can alleviate common discomforts, reduce the risk of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, and promote overall well-being. However, it's essential to approach prenatal fitness with care, tailoring activities to your individual health status and pregnancy progression.

Engaging in regular physical activity while pregnant can reduce back pain by strengthening muscles to help support the extra weight and alleviate strain. Exercise releases endorphins, enhancing overall mood. Staying active aids in managing weight during pregnancy, and building endurance can be beneficial during childbirth.

Most pregnant women are advised to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. Exercise can be broken down into 30-minute sessions on most days. Suitable exercises include walking, which is a gentle way to maintain cardiovascular fitness; swimming and water aerobics because the buoyancy of water supports your weight, reducing strain on joints; prenatal yoga and Pilates, which improve flexibility, strength, and relaxation; and stationary cycling, which provides a cardiovascular workout with minimal impact. Also, Kegel exercises should be incorporated to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, aiding in labor and recovery.

Stronger, Leaner, Healthier!

In Just 30 Minutes a Week at SlowBurn Personal Training Studios

WWhat if you could become leaner, stronger, and healthier injury-free in just 30 minutes a week? For over thirty years, certified personal trainer Fredrick Hahn and his team at SlowBurn Personal Training studios in NY and NJ have been helping people of all ages gain strength, lose fat, and build lean tissue. His Montclair studio is celebrating 10 years at the Watchung Plaza location, which boasts a bright, warm environment. With medical-grade resistance training machines and the InBody 570 body composition device, we guarantee fat loss and lean tissue gains!

“I opened SlowBurn Personal Training Studios because I could no longer accept the dangerous exercise practices I was forced to deal with in the world of personal training and physical therapy. I wanted to give my clients the very best I could in an ideal exercise environment—by increasing the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of their exercise sessions,” said Hahn.

SlowBurn is a form of low-force, timeefficient weight lifting. The “Tai Chi-like” routine is a full-body workout done very slowly for 60-90 seconds until your muscles reach deep fatigue. It’s an exhilarating experience.

SlowBurn was featured on the TODAY show four times as one of the easiest and safest ways to get fit. Perfect for all ages, from kids to boomers, SlowBurn improves strength, endurance, cardio, flexibility, and bone density—and even de-ages you at the genetic level—in just one 30-minute session a week or two 15-minute sessions.

Research on strength training reveals that it provides all the health advantages of aerobics and stretching. SlowBurn allows maximum benefits in minimum time–achievable due to the deep level of physiological stimulation that SlowBurn exercises provide your full body in 30 minutes. Remember— the benefits of exercise come when you’re resting, not while you’re exercising!

Your first session at SlowBurn and the InBody body composition test are complimentary.

Pain/Pleasure Principle

AAll humans have one thing in common. We are fundamentally guided by the “pain-pleasure principle,” which means we are motivated to seek out pleasure and avoid pain. This is understandable. Nobody goes around looking for painful experiences, right?

Well, maybe we should.

That’s not to say we need to go out and actively search for ways to experience pain. Pain happens to us all, whether it’s an actual physical injury, depression, loss, mental anguish, or needing to make a difficult choice. We need to learn to deal with pain when it inevitably appears in our lives.

I was having a conversation with my son when he brought up research. He found that the brain releases dopamine when one has pleasure from drugs or alcohol, but then the brain makes us pay for the pain with depression, withdrawals, and feeling miserable afterward. Then my son mentioned something interesting about the Seesaw Metaphor…

“If you indulge in pleasure first (like drugs, alcohol, etc.), dopamine is released, and you’re riding high on the seesaw, but there’s always the pain from withdrawal when your body then craves that dopamine chemical and you go low on the seesaw. Versus, you can experience “pain” first (working out, running, ice bath, reading, getting your mind to do something difficult), and you’ll be low on the seesaw, but then your brain/body

rewards you afterward with the release of dopamine.”

According to recent data, nearly 50% of Americans claim to actively try to eat healthier, with many citing healthy eating as a top priority; however, barriers like cost and time constraints often hinder their efforts, with a significant portion still consuming fast food regularly. So, what is painful about how we eat? It has to do with the choices we make, for instance, let’s say you’re deciding on what to have when you’re out for dinner. What choice would you feel better having:

• Fried chicken/T-bone steak with macaroni and cheese, ice cream, and cake for dessert? Or…

• Salad with broccoli, mushrooms, chickpeas, carrots, walnuts, lentil soup, and fruit for dessert?

Sure, that steak makes some people’s mouth water. Maybe you won’t have the same excitement if you choose the salad direction. Here’s the scenario. At first, it was painful mentally for me to go to a steakhouse with 20 people and order a cauliflower steak and salad for dinner. But guess what? Here are a few of the pleasures you experience after that painful decision.

You feel amazing that evening, the next day, and for the rest of your life because you made food your medicine, not the other way around.

Believe it or not, after 30 or more days, your taste buds begin to change, and all the healthy foods start to taste better.

You fueling your body with healthier choices.

(By the way, it’s OK to enjoy cake and certain pleasures once in a while I’m not against that… I’m just citing an example).

Here’s another beneficial example. I have worked with various training methods in martial arts to increase strength and resiliency over the years. One is rolling on various surfaces like grass, sand, cement, and wood. Or weighted steel rings around your arms slamming into your muscle tissue and bones over time. At first, there is a little pain, but it goes away after a while.

But here’s the interesting phenomenon that took place. I recently had a bad fall from a flight of stairs with steel rings on my arm. The interesting part was that there were no bruises or pain from that fall. After that, I spoke with a cardiovascular surgeon who explained that all those minor hits over time create microscopic tears in your muscle fibers, and they become stronger and more resilient over time.

Most of us are afraid of pain because we don’t realize that there are many lessons to be learned from embracing pain for future pleasure.
