“There’s a Robot in My Socks,” the second book in the award-winning Mighty Moods series by New Providence author, Meredith Rusu, brings another charming tale to life. Inspired by her sons, Meredith’s series uses whimsical creatures to help kids express big feelings. This latest story follows a young girl who struggles with change and separation anxiety. With the help of her grandmother and a quirky robot in her socks, she learns to find joy even when things don’t go as planned.
Available on Amazon and in stores, “There’s a Robot in My Socks” offers a playful way to discuss and ease children’s worries. Meredith will be doing a Holiday Pop-Up event at Indigo in the Short Hills Mall on Saturday, December 7th with fellow children’s book author and Emmywinning TV host, Michelle Park, and she is committed to creating stories that resonate with young readers one heartfelt tale at a time.
Maria Laurino, a former Short Hills resident, uncovers a gripping and untold chapter of history in her latest book, The Price of Children: Stolen Lives in a Land Without Choice, exploring a secretive post-World War II adoption program. From 1950 to 1970, thousands of Italian children, many described as “war orphans,” were sent to America by the Catholic Church. However, Maria’s research reveals these children were often taken from unwed mothers facing immense societal and religious pressure. The heartbreaking discoveries began with her own cousin’s adoption story, leading Maria on a years-long journey across archives and interviews.
The book’s impact has been profound, sparking interest in both Italy and the U.S., with Maria receiving a flood of messages from adoptees and families seeking their roots. Featured on 60 Minutes, her work sheds light on a dark past, aiming to heal wounds through truth and acknowledgment. Maria hopes to spark further dialogue on women’s rights and adoption ethics.
The SOMA Studio Tour, now in its 21st year, transformed South Orange and Maplewood into an immersive art experience this past November. Featuring 116 artists across 50 locations, including venues like The Woodland, the Skate House, and local studios, this beloved event showcased a range of art, from professional pieces to emerging talent. This year’s tour extended community outreach, providing fee waivers for select artists and mentoring five Columbia High School seniors to exhibit their work. Attendees explored everything from paintings, sculptures, and mixed media to high-end crafts, guided by a searchable online map. Organized by a dedicated volunteer committee, the tour remained a highlight
for art lovers, facilitating artist sales, building connections, and offering a window into their creative processes. With its mission-driven focus, community support, and vibrant energy, the event drew art enthusiasts from neighboring towns, cementing its place as a cherished tradition and cultural celebration.
Did you know that engaging in pottery can offer a deeply therapeutic experience?
Recognizing this benefit over a decade ago, Madison resident Melanie Tomaszewski, owner of Mud Clay Studios in Madison, Montclair, and Mendham, created an inclusive community where people connect through clay work. Her studios provide stress relief and a sense of calm. “When life is tough, the wheel keeps you present in the moment,” Melanie says, capturing clay’s grounding power. She adds with a smile, “Clay is cheaper than therapy.” Mud Clay Studios offers classes, One Time Wheel workshops, kids’ summer camps, and more. Open 24 hours for members, the studios are a welcoming space for artisans of all levels. Beyond art, the studios support community causes through nonprofit partnerships, fundraisers, and private clay-dates. Members also showcase their work at “Pop-Up Pot Shops,” like the one coming up December 13–15 at the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts (METC Education Annex) in Madison. LLizzie Ferrari, a senior from Millburn, was thrust into a new reality during her freshman year when she was diagnosed with celiac disease. A sudden shift from enjoying glutenrich foods without issues to severe stomach pain and fatigue left her feeling isolated and struggling to keep up in school. “It was really hard for me,” Lizzie recalls. “I had to miss social events, was falling behind in school, and felt completely lost.”
Her diagnosis came with little guidance—just a directive to eliminate gluten entirely. For Lizzie, this meant a steep learning curve, from navigating cross-contamination risks at restaurants to advocating for herself at social gatherings. Determined not to let celiac define or isolate her, Lizzie found a path to empowerment. In her sophomore year, she organized an event at the Millburn Library featuring sisters with celiac disease, a young man with food allergies, and two medical professionals from Overlook Medical Center. Lizzie spoke publicly about her experiences for the first time, a significant step for someone who had always been shy. “It opened up conversations and helped me connect with others,” she explains.
Motivated by the positive response, Lizzie created a quarterly support group for teens with celiac disease and other food-related challenges. Unlike her initial informational session, these gatherings have been a space for sharing, support, and connection. “It wasn’t just me talking,” Lizzie shares. “Everyone got to share their stories, and it created a very welcoming environment—a safe space for people struggling with this disease.”
Lizzie’s support group not only provided community and resources but helped her transform her own perspective on living with celiac disease. “Being able to turn it around into something positive and help others opened my eyes to the power of giving back,” she reflects. Her efforts extend to an Instagram account where she shares glutenfree recipes and alternatives to popular foods, offering practical solutions for navigating a gluten-free lifestyle.
Looking ahead, Lizzie plans to continue advocating for those with celiac disease in college while pursuing a major in psychology. “I want to help others and keep building support networks,” she affirms.
Though Lizzie will leave Millburn soon to attend college, her impact is clear. Her story is one of resilience, advocacy, and a commitment to turning personal challenges into meaningful support for others.
FFor more than three decades, Bridges Outreach of Summit has been a source of strength and support for those facing homelessness across New Jersey. With compassionate outreach and a commitment to making homelessness rare and short-lived, the nonprofit meets people where they are—whether it’s a mother living in her car, an elderly resident facing eviction, or someone living on the streets—and walks with them toward stability and independence. Bridges is about more than shelter; it’s about giving people a chance to rebuild and reclaim their dignity.
Bridges primarily serves clients in Union County, focusing on Summit, Elizabeth, and Plainfield. In Essex County, they support Montclair and operate a 24/7 outreach and mobile case management contract with the city of Newark. Additionally, they partner with local governments, such as in Summit and Newark, to develop systemic stability.
The organization focuses on preventing and ending homelessness through comprehensive case management, outreach efforts, and strategic partnerships. Their support extends to housing assistance, healthcare access, obtaining identity documents, and job placement. “What we do, to put it simply, is prevent and end experiences of homelessness,” said Richard Uniacke, President of Bridges. “Beyond providing solutions, we use data and experiences to push for systemic change. We want homelessness to be rare, brief, and non-recurring.”
Bridges’ approach addresses the root causes of homelessness. Educational programs engage local youth, instilling the importance of giving back by having them pack essentials for those in need. Seasonal assistance provides resources like winter clothing, and life skills training empower clients for long-term stability.
By connecting clients to healthcare and advocating for policy change, Bridges tackles homelessness holistically.
One example of their impact involved a 79-year-old Summit resident facing eviction. When traditional channels failed her, Bridges stepped in, coordinating community partners to cover her rental arrears and plan for her future stability. “Hundreds of these cases cross our path each year, and it’s incredibly powerful to make a difference,” Richard shared.
This commitment drives Richard’s passion. “We get to solve it for people—stand in the way of imminent homelessness and help them transition to permanent housing.” Innovations like New Jersey’s 1115 Medicaid waiver integration will allow Bridges to offer comprehensive support, from tenancy support to health services, creating sustainable solutions for vulnerable populations.
Annel Mitchell of South Orange, Bridges’ Director of Development, highlighted the organization’s evolution from distributing food to full-scale case management. “During COVID-19, we provided temporary housing when people couldn’t shelter in place. Now, we help them move from survival to stability,” she said, emphasizing strategic partnerships and community outreach.
In 2024 alone, through September, Bridges housed 453 people, with over 300 cases preventing homelessness and more than 100 exiting homelessness into permanent housing. “When everyone works together, we see incredible results,” Annel added. “We’re not just providing shelter; we’re creating pathways to stability and a better future.”

BBorn with an onslaught of medical challenges—extra digits, developmental delays, vision problems, and more—Suzy Fisher’s life was initially defined by a series of “nevers.” Later diagnosed with Joubert syndrome (JS), Suzy faced immense obstacles. Medical experts predicted she would never walk, talk, or function independently. However, with the unwavering support from her mother, Jane, father Al, siblings Ben and Beth, and an extended network of advocates, Suzy, a Livingston resident, defied every expectation. To chronicle their journey of resilience, love, and triumph over impossible odds, Jane authored a memoir titled If You Knew Suzy: Pushing Past the Boundaries of ‘Never’ released in September 2024 and is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Joubert syndrome affects brain development, leading to poor muscle control, abnormal breathing, and vision and kidney issues—challenges Suzy has confronted with remarkable strength. Diagnosed when little was known about JS, Jane navigated a world without modern resources, relying on extensive research and relentless determination. Infant stimulation programs and hours of therapy formed the foundation of Suzy’s progress at a time when special needs programs were scarce.
Suzy’s milestones have been nothing short of monumental. At three and a half, she took her first steps—a miracle for a child with such a prognosis. Facing social isolation in mainstream school, Jane sought specialized programs where Suzy could thrive academically and socially. The Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) in Chatham became a transformative space where Suzy embraced every opportunity, from cheerleading and prom to running for student body treasurer with the slogan, “Vote for the honey with your money.” Suzy’s Bat Mitzvah, made possible through a program Jane helped create at their temple, marked another significant achievement.
At 24, Suzy faced end-stage kidney failure, enduring dialysis and traveling with her family across the country to find a suitable donor. This journey ultimately led to a successful transplant. When her first kidney began to fail, Suzy received a second transplant in 2013, which continues to sustain her.
Despite her setbacks, Suzy’s life is filled with kindness, empathy, and a refusal to give up. Her magnetic personality, humor, and compassion bring joy and foster deep connections with everyone around her. Jane and Suzy now advocate for early detection of Joubert syndrome and related genetic conditions, promoting genetic testing and raising awareness within high-risk populations to improve outcomes for affected individuals. Equally important to the Fischers is educating the public about the critical need for organ donation and advocating for families of children with special needs.
The story of Jane and Suzy Fisher is one of unwavering love, resilience, and community impact, often referred to as ‘the Suzy effect’—a powerful force that transforms everyone Suzy meets with her kindness and grace. Their journey inspires countless families facing similar challenges. If You Knew Suzy serves as a roadmap for parents, a tribute to perseverance, and a call to embrace every challenge with courage and hope, rewriting every ‘never.’

OOne of the most cherished holiday traditions is gathering around the table to share a delicious meal with loved ones. As much as this celebration is eagerly anticipated, preparing the perfect holiday feast can sometimes be a daunting task. From selecting the right cuts of meat to ensuring everything is cooked to perfection, holiday meals require careful planning and execution. This is where Barth’s Market can help!
The Barth’s butchers are eager to help you select the best cuts of meat for your holiday menu, offer advice on cooking techniques, and even provide custom orders for special diets or preferences. Customer favorites include Barth’s prime standing rib roast, perfectly trimmed and tied filet mignon, whole Jaindl turkeys, and Barth’s home-made holiday hams (available bone-in or boneless). Beyond having the best cuts of meat, Barth’s does the messy work to allow you to cook with ease. Need a spatchcocked chicken? Ask Barth’s. Stuffing a pork roast or leg of lamb? Ask Barth’s to butterfly it for you. Want to serve a holiday meal with a visual “wow” factor? Let Barth’s trim and assemble a crown roast (available in pork or lamb) for you. Then, season it to your liking and pop it in the oven for an elevated and beautiful entree. As the owner, Jim Barth, likes to say, “At Barth’s it’s all about the food.”
The staff at Barth’s take pride in putting that mantra into action: every partof the store is brimming with palate pleasing choices delivered by friendly, knowledgeable employees. Holiday seafood staples are brought in fresh daily and include shrimp, salmon, whole branzino and snapper, and lobsters. Lobster tails in a variety of sizes and king crab legs are available for pre-order. Other delicious offerings include cold cuts, sausages, and bacon, all of which are made in-house and are gluten-free with minimal preservatives. Similarly, the prepared food is made fresh daily and, at holiday time, features chef specials such as turkey with stuffing and gravy, baked salmon, and a variety of seasonal vegetables. If all the choices sound delicious but you prefer a low-prep meal, the Barth’s staff is happy to help you place a catering order for anything from a shrimp platter to a fully-cooked, multi-course hoilday meal.
No holiday meal is complete without dessert, and Barth’s specialty holiday dessert items can add a festive touch to your meal. One such holiday favorite is stollen, a German Christmas bread that’s rich, buttery, and comes in many varieties including dried fruit, nuts, and marzipan. This item is so popular among Barth’s customers that it routinely sells out well before Christmas! Other holiday treats include chocolate mousse cake, tiramisu, crepe cake, apple strudel, pies, chocolate filled Advent calendars, marzipan, Italian panettone cake, German chocolates, and a wide selection of specialty ice creams.
Given all of Barth’s offerings, it’s no surprise that for nearly 80 years, Barth’s has been a beloved neighborhood butcher and grocer serving customers throughout northern New Jersey. So, whether you are shopping for ingredients for a breakfast spread, sandwiches, a charcuterie platter, or your entire holiday meal, you can be assured that Barth’s Market has the best ingredients to Feed Your Holiday Spirit.

Most of us experience a lot of holiday stress and indulge in at least two or three of the four “C’s” of the holiday season candies, cookies, cakes and cocktails. Unfortunately, most holiday food is full of sugar, and increased sugar intake weakens our immune system setting the stage for illness. Mix in the stress of parties, shopping, and neglecting self care and we have now created the perfect storm for the cold or flu to knock us down!
“To help combat the four “C’s” and to keep your immune system strong some people can benefit from a Manual Lymph Drainage Massage,” states Kathy McCready of Provident Health and Fitness. Lymph massage can benefit just about everyone. If you're feeling tired and low on energy, or if you've been sick and feeling like your body is fighting to get back on track, lymph massage would likely serve you well. Athletes, surgical patients, Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue suffers, and anyone wanting a fresh look should consider MLD therapy
A healthy and viable lymph system means that your body can drain out foreign invaders, toxins, and wastes so you heal much faster.

AAs the seasons change, many individuals look forward to the beauty of autumn leaves or the charm of snowy winters. However, for some, the transition to colder months brings about a serious condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This form of depression typically occurs during the fall and winter months when daylight hours are shorter, leading to various emotional and physical challenges.
SAD is a type of depression that is directly tied to changes in seasons. According to mental health professionals, SAD is characterized by recurring depressive episodes that follow a seasonal pattern. While many people experience fluctuations in mood during seasonal changes, those with SAD may experience more pronounced symptoms that can significantly impact their daily lives.
Common symptoms of SAD include:
• Persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness
• Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
• Changes in appetite or weight (usually craving carbohydrates)
• Sleep disturbances, such as oversleeping or insomnia
• Difficulty concentrating
• Fatigue or low energy
• Social withdrawal
While SAD can occur in individuals with a history of other mood disorders, it may also manifest in those who have never struggled with depression before.
Light Therapy which involves sitting near a specialized light box that mimics natural sunlight can help regulate the body’s internal clock and improve mood.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be effective by helping individuals develop coping strategies and challenge negative thought patterns.
Antidepressant medications may be prescribed to manage symptoms, particularly for individuals with severe depression.
Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a balanced diet, and practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques can also support mental well-being during the winter months.
Social connections are vital. Open lines of communication with friends and family can help individuals feel less isolated and more supported.

BY BARRY FARBER
II’ve had the amazing opportunity to write this column for over 25 years. I wanted to thank all the readers for your inspiring letters and continued support.
I do hope Diamond Minds lifts you up and makes you look at life a little differently. Sometimes we just need reminding of the basics and simple things that make us appreciate what we have and live life to its fullest. Here are some of those reminders…
• The founder of Ralston Purina said; “Catch a passion for helping others and a richer life comes back to you.” When your focus is on elevating others you in turn elevate yourself. We are at our best when we are providing a valuable service to others. As the late great Earl Nightingale said; “Our rewards in life are in direct proportion to our service”.
• Breathe. In every martial art, breathing is one of the most critical factors for control and power. Yet it is one of the last things we think of when confronted with conflict. Breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and heart, improves mental observation and concentration, and ultimately reduces stress.
• One of my favorite quotes by Winston Churchill, “A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.”
There is always something valuable that can be derived out of difficulty, adversity or change.
• Learn your craft well. Study everything about your profession so you attain deep knowledge. That deep understanding gives you great confidence which is one of the greatest assets when faced with adversity and a challenging environment.
• Transparency… Be comfortable in your own skin. Many years ago, a good friend of mine told me that your potential increases tremendously when you stay true to who you are. Never underestimate the power of being yourself and connecting with people on a whole different level.
• One of the strangest secrets that has been discovered is that we become what we think about. So be selective in what you read and who you surround yourself with. Our thoughts become our actions and it all starts in the mind.
• Constant learning… Constant action… Both are equal… Both are necessary… We learn from our actions… We act from our learning… One without the other suffers… Both together provide depth and clarity in truth.
Barry Farber
• Successful people do the things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do.
• When changes come your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities.
• No one cares how much you know until they see how much you care. Learn to listen more than you talk.
One of the most inspiring thoughts ever written was produced some 4500 years ago in Sanskrit; I am sharing it in translation:
“Look well to this one day, for it and it alone is life. In the brief course of this one-day lie all the verities and realities of your existence— the pride of growth, the glory of action, the splendor of beauty. Yesterday is only a dream, and tomorrow is but a vision. Yet each day, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and each tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this one day, for it and it alone is life.”
And to the husband and wife in Whole Foods the other day… Thank you for your kind words!
