Local Members of Row New Jersey Participated in the Head of the Charles

Six local children: Team Captain Victoria Nicely of Summit, Will Qi of Short Hills, Jessica Bao of Chatham, Team Captain Josh Sacks of Summit, Caroline Barbato of Summit, and Christian Mirzaian of Madison recently participated in the Head of the Charles, which is the largest regatta in the world. It takes place in Boston. They are members of Row New Jersey, a competitive club rowing program that draws athletes from a range of counties and schools. Both the boys and girls Varsity 8 boats finished in the top 20 of their respective fields of about 90 entries, with the boys placing 18th and the girls placing 20th, which is the highest finish ever for the girls and the second best for the boys in club history. It also marks the first time both the boys and girls teams have finished in the top 20 in the same year.

New Theatre Group Launches in Madison

There is a new theatre group in Madison—the Madison Public Theatre. It was created this past year when the founders noticed that Madison and the surrounding areas are packed with many talented actors, singers, musicians, writers, and other creative types. The goal is to find a way for them to share their talents with the community. “Some people involved are getting back into a creative area they once enjoyed, and others are enhancing what they still do,” said Tom Sellwood, a founder of the theatre. “We are always looking for new people to join us in any capacity.”

This past summer, the Theatre produced its first venture—a large-scale production of the Cole Porter musical Kiss Me Kate! Madison Public Theatre is now looking to produce additional creative productions, including a holiday concert. It will be held on December 10, at 3 pm at Madison Junior High. For tickets or information, go to madisonpublictheatre.org

Summit Resident Publishes Her First Novel

Andrea J. Stein of Summit has published her first novel, called Typecast. The story centers on a thirty-one-year-old preschool teacher in suburban New Jersey whose college ex-boyfriend has written the screenplay for a new movie—based on their break-up. “Years ago, I heard about a guy who made a short film about his college girlfriend ten years after graduating. It got me wondering how his ex would feel if she knew—and that was what sparked Typecast.”

Andrea, who has been writing since she was young, has been touring local book clubs, libraries, and bookstores. A book publicist by profession, she enjoys being an author and is working on her next novel. Typecast is available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

Madison Resident Uses

Voice for Children’s Projects

Voiceover actress Sarah Switek of Madison will be the voice of an elf on the Cirlin family annual North Pole Airport-themed lights and music show that will be on display in Rockland County, NY this holiday season. The display, which garners hundreds of guests each year, collects money to be donated to Angel Flight NE, a non-profit that provides free angel flights and ground transportation so adults and children can access life-saving medical care. Money and food are also collected there for a local food pantry. Sarah, who has been doing voiceover acting for five years, says she got into this side gig because she has a very unusual speaking voice. Aside from the holiday display, she has also voiced kids’ apps and podcasts, and was a volunteer storyteller at the Chatham Farmers’ Market. She says she enjoys doing educational projects because it allows her to be creative.

Green Village Resident Creates Miniature Animals

Artist Kristin Butkus of Green Village has an unusual skill, she makes realistic-looking miniature animals for dollhouses and other types of miniature displays. She recently showed her work at the Philadelphia Miniatures Show. She also creates custom pets using the pet’s own hair, which is usually humanely sourced after a grooming appointment. In addition, she makes mini birds, rodents, wildlife, and fish tanks and uses other types of fibers to sculpt and decorate the pieces. Kristin works on the miniatures with her mom Martha and says the two have a great time coming up with animals and displays. Kristin says it is hard work and takes many steps to create just one animal. Her work can be seen on Instagram @heartfeltcanines.

Local Teen is a Charitable Entrepreneur

Supratik (Deep) Ghosh, of Millburn, is an enterprising young man. At 17, he is starting his second company in four years. In addition, he has donated most of his profits to charity.

Four years ago, Deep built his first computer and needed a keyboard. He wanted a special mechanical one that was expensive, but instead of buying it, he sat down and built one for himself. He realized there was a niche market for this type of keyboard and started a company that earned $250K last year. He plans to donate all the proceeds to charity.

This year, while he was traveling in Europe, he saw fashion accessories and timepieces that intrigued him. Again, instead of purchasing the expensive ones he saw, he decided to build his own. He says he was intrigued by its workmanship and the intricacies of its inner workings. He then launched a company this summer to sell his custom designed fashion accessories.

Deep says he believes that “when you pursue something you are passionate about, you will have success.”

This entrepreneur is also passionate about being charitable. While in India visiting his grandparents, he met a local philanthropist who was setting up mini schools in small areas. Deep said this opened his eyes to realizing how lucky he was to have the opportunities he has. This led to him to donate $10,000 from the money he earned from his business to World Central Kitchen, Khan Academy and to schools in the US through DonorsChoose. He says he felt great making the donations but that he had expected to receive updates and progress, but he didn’t. It got him to start his own charity called stemGoals, which is funded by his keyboard business. Here, he can make a direct impact with his donations.

When he got home, Deep began reaching out to schools to see where he could make a difference. He says that because of his age, he doesn’t think some of them took him seriously. However, one school in particular, Paterson School 16, an elementary school, did take him up on his quest. He spoke to the administration and learned that because of the pandemic, the children had fallen behind in math and sciences.

Deep made a $20,000 donation to the school and helped design a hands-on, project-based STEM program for the students. One such project was building a garden where 30 students learned about area, volume and the like. He says the kids really thrived. “The garden boosted their engagement and they actively wanted to participate,” says Deep.

The program ran through the 20212022 school year. The program was so successful in bringing up the kids’ grades that “the principal told me that it is being added to the school’s permanent budget,” says Deep. “It was gratifying to see the donated money used for such a great cause. It meant a lot to me to see the impact my donation made and to know that it will outlast my modest donation.”

Next, he is donating to a program that will get projectors into the schools in Uganda to stream subjects and topics that are otherwise out of reach due to lack of qualified teachers. He is also looking for matching donors.

To learn more or make a donation, go to stemgoals.org.

Family Promise Union County is Helping to Address Family Homelessness

When Family Promise began, it was a local response to a problem in Union County, New Jersey. Thirty years later, it is a national movement involving thousands of volunteers, which served more than 187,000 people in 2021. There are more than 200 affiliates across 43 states making it the leading national nonprofit addressing the issue of family homelessness.

Family Promise Union County (FPUC) Executive Director Geleen Donovan says, “Family Promise provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for people to make a difference for families in their community and empowers families to maintain employment, housing, and hope.”

FPUC provides many programs to Union County residents, such as homelessness prevention and shelter diversion, to ensure that families stay housed. Other services include providing temporary emergency shelter apartments; a congregational building and retrofitting program where congregations rent their unused space to low-income families; and a new program called Open Table, which pairs families with a group of volunteers from many community sectors including business, education, faith communities, and healthcare. They work with clients using their vast relational capital and social networks to impact the social determinants of health for clients.

When the pandemic hit, FPUC pivoted to handle the immediate needs of the community, which included the transformation of their emergency shelter program. Geleen explains that “in the former rotational model, people were in a congregate setting, moving every two weeks, which is hard on families, especially children. In the new model, families can remain living in one place, while the organization helps them figure out long-term plans.” Aside from providing housing and professional services, FPUC also supplies clients with basic needs

like Shoprite gift cards, transportation, and childcare. The case management team assists with obstacles in finding permanent housing.

Once a family is on solid ground and can move into their own place, FPUC cleans and repairs the temporary shelter apartment, and the next family in need moves in. When a family is ready to exit the shelter program, FPUC works with over 100 landlords in Union County to obtain long-term housing. It benefits families because they can stay in one place and it benefits landlords because they receive guaranteed rent from a solid organization. “We’ve seen a few times that once a family was ready to move into permanent housing, landlords asked

if they may rent directly to the family because they had developed a wonderful relationship and felt the family would be a great tenant,” says Geleen.

Finding temporary housing can be difficult and Family Promise’s program for creating congregated space helps combat this. One location they are working with is St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New Providence. Geleen says, “St. Andrews has been working on retrofitting a ‘Carriage House’ building, located on their property. FPUC is currently renting a 1-bedroom emergency shelter apartment from St. Andrews at this location. Part of the plan is to renovate two more 2-bedroom apartments to rent to lowincome families.”

ANNUAL CONCERT

From the bold sounds of the bagpipes and the harmonious blending of brass, strings and percussion, to the poetic and lyrical words that complement them, the Pipes of Christmas is a festival for the soul.

The Pipes of Christmas offers a spiritual and traditional take on the season that connects concertgoers to the holiday in a fresh, meaningful way. Past concerts featured tunes such as, Highland Cathedral, Joy to the World, and Amazing Grace, all performed live on pipes and drums, harp and fiddle, and organ and brass and more. Not only does the performance define Christmas cheer, but also it inspires those of Celtic descent to retrace and reconnect to their ancestry.

Tips for Planning Winter Getaways

Winter occasions and celebrations equate to increased travel opportunities for many families to see destinations around the globe. Whether you’re planning a trip far from home or taking advantage of nearby attractions during a staycation, you can get more out of your adventures when you plan ahead. Consider these facts, figures and tips from the travel experts at Go City, a top attractions and experiences pass for city travelers.

Planning

Overall, Americans spend an average of 14 hours planning their getaway, the majority of which happens online or with the help of apps that provide booking information, directions, localized tips and more. In addition to deciding where to go and what to do once you get there, you may find planning ahead and checking restaurant reviews is especially helpful for those first hours after you arrive. Upon arrival, the first order of business for travelers is often refueling with a good meal, typically based on reviews they read before reaching their destination. Also research attractions and create a plan of things you’d like to do each day, even if you don’t follow it to the letter.

Remember, while many attractions and entertainment options provide flexibility, some should be booked in advance. Check individual websites for events, attractions and more to find details about booking and tickets, if required.

Destination

If you’re like many Americans, you may favor traveling to a place where the temperatures soar and you can soak up some sunshine. However, taking advantage of some typically warmer destinations outside of peak season can actually provide a way to avoid lines and enjoy a break from the heat. For example, locals in Orlando prefer to visit the area’s popular theme parks in the winter. Using an option like Go City can help you save and experience more to make your in- or offseason trip even better with access to Legoland Florida, Fun Spot America and Boggy Creek Airboat Tours.

The experience passes provide access to popular attractions in 30 major cities around the world such as New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Orlando, London, Bangkok, Barcelona, Dubai and more. Cancun is another hot spot; using the All-Inclusive Pass during the cooler months allows you to take advantage of one of the best times of the year to enjoy Xcaret at Night, along with the Cancun Scenic Tower. Other favorites among visitors include the Sky Wheel and parasailing adventures.

14 Vicinity Magazine Winter 2022

Packing

Smart packing is an often-overlooked secret to successful travel. Not only do you need enough attire for each day, you may also need extras to accommodate special activities or adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day and evening hours. The majority of Americans (63%) pack the night before a big trip but starting sooner can help ensure you don’t forget anything important. Starting a list well ahead of time can help you get a jump on your packing while saving the physical act of fitting everything into your luggage until closer to departure.

Excursions

Taking advantage of the unique activities and excursions is a smart way to immerse yourself and more fully experience the cities you visit. On average, Americans participate in five

activities and excursions during a single trip; most of the time, those outings are planned from home as much as four weeks ahead of time, rather than upon arriving in the destination city.

If you’re planning to schedule excursions on your trip, explore resources like Go City, which can help you save up to 60% over gate admission prices. Passes can unlock the best a city has to offer, from bucket list attractions and top tours in the United States, such as Universal

plenty of hidden gems and exclusive experiences such as a tour of Fenway Park, Texas Ranger Museum, Museum of Us, Coral Crater Adventure Park and even wine and cheese-making classes.

Livingston’s

‘The Feathered Fox’ is in a Class of Its Own

Renowned Executive Chef & Owner Chris Siversen brings the best & brightest aspects of the traditional American steakhouse to The Westminster Hotel with a few unexpected twists.

In a year that featured several lows for the restaurant industry, a newbie to the Livingston dining scene manages to shine brightly. Executive chef and coowner Chris Siversen (of Maritime Parc, located in Jersey City’s Liberty State Park) delivered on his promise of a fresh take on the steakhouse with The Feathered Fox. Located within Livingston’s Westminster Hotel, the restaurant incorporates an exceptional selection of perfectly curated charred steak cuts and chops, inventive sides, and brilliant interpretations of familiar sushi rolls, freshly prepared upon order at its exceptional raw bar.

At The Feathered Fox, a sense of true craft has been infused into every aspect of the dining experience, from flavors and plating to dishware to its luxe interior. Its menu features all the classics one expects to find at a steakhouse along with contemporary, imaginative twists. Siversen’s commitment to excellence is the cornerstone of every element within.

The impeccably sourced ingredients from local purveyors—the steaks and chops are from DeBragga— elevate its menus, which include inventive vegetarian, gluten-free, KETO friendly dishes, making it a delicious and viable option for everyone in your party.

“When developing the concept, the team placed an emphasis on three pillars—reinvention, artistry, and integrity” shares Siversen. “The Feathered Fox feels fundamentally different from most restaurants in the region, the menu crafted with the best products sourced locally, marrying tradition with innovation.”

The Feathered Fox offers a thoughtfully designed aesthetic that is strikingly different from the typical masculine, dark steakhouse décor. In its beautiful bar and lounge, guests can enjoy one of their crafted seasonal cocktails, wines (including one of NJ’s most impressive sake lists) or beers before dinner or after work (where one can also take advantage of their ‘happiest’ hour pricing). In addition to the main dining room, there’s a wellappointed private dining room, The Meadow.

A Healthy, Winter-Ready Home

When chilly weather arrives and the days get shorter, chances are good you’ll spend the majority of your days indoors. Before you start your hibernation, it’s a good idea to ensure your home is up to the task. Put your wellbeing at the top of the list with these ideas to help ensure a health-conscious home.

Encourage Better Air Quality

When the house is closed up to keep out the cold, you may be trapping in undesirable air pollutants. A well-sealed house may not have the best circulation, and that’s the ideal environment for allergens to accumulate.

A thorough cleaning is the first step toward better air quality. Vacuum all carpets, including under furniture and around baseboards. Be sure to launder linens that aren’t typically part of your regular washing routine.

When opening windows isn’t comfortable during cold winter weather, letting the sunshine in can still help to improve indoor air quality. A study by the University of Oregon’s Biology and the Built Environment Center showed rooms with increased sunlight have fewer viable bacteria.

“Until now, daylighting design has been primarily about visual comfort or circadian health, but now we can say daylighting influences air quality,” said Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, co-director of the BioBE Center and co-author of the study.

Keep Out the Cold

There actually is some truth to the old wives’ tales associating cold with getting sick. The viruses that cause colds and the flu thrive in cooler temperatures, for example. This means that, at least indirectly, a cold environment may indeed make you sick.

To ward off a chill in your home, safeguard against drafts around windows and doors. If seasonal weather-proofing is impractical, consider temporary solutions like draft stoppers or mats you can place at the base of doors. Add insulation, if needed, in areas that commonly release a significant amount of heat, such as the attic and garage.

Let in the Light

Natural light plays an important role in overall health, and reduced daylight in the winter months can have a big impact on productivity and sleep, according to a recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Velux. For example, nearly two-thirds of respondents said they believe daylight affects their productivity and mood. Light is also an important cue to the body’s circadian clock, and proper exposure to natural light during the day can help support better sleep when darkness falls.

Health and Wellness 26 Vicinity Magazine Winter 2022

What’s more, sunlight is a natural antidepressant, and there is ample scientific evidence that associates daylight with better health and quality of life, such as improved mood, less fatigue and reduced eyestrain.

It may be tempting to keep the drapes closed when it’s blustery outside to ward off a draft, but with well-sealed windows, there’s no reason to block that all-important natural light. In rooms with ample natural light available, take advantage, especially in the morning when exposure to daylight can benefit your circadian rhythm.

However, not every room is situated to maximize your access to natural light, and that’s when you can get creative. One solution is skylights, which add natural light to virtually any space. An option like a Sun Tunnel Skylight offered by Velux Skylights lends brightness to even the smallest spaces, like a bathroom or hallway. For a larger room, a fresh-air skylight can help address air quality concerns, and some models offer smartphone connectivity to open and close the skylight and even raise or lower blinds with a few quick taps of the finger. Learn more at whyskylights.com.

Daylight Makes a Difference

As the days become shorter and colder, the importance of getting enough daylight is even more acute to sleep patterns, mood and productivity. These tips can help you get a better night sleep:

• Increase your exposure to natural light during the day. Take a lunchtime walk at work or, if you can’t get outside, sit by a window while you eat.

• Install blackout curtains in your bedroom to block light from street lamps and the moon.

• Turn your thermostat down in the evenings to create a cooler bedroom to sleep in.

• Establish a good bedtime routine. For example, read a book instead of spending more time looking at a screen. Blue light from electronic devices mimics daylight and can trick your brain into staying alert.

• Use red or orange bulbs in kids’ night lights as these are some of the least disruptive to sleep.

MATT ROBERTS: Every Picture Tells His Story

One of his earliest memories was looking at a book featuring the photographs from the renown Family of Man exhibit. Armed with his father’s Brownie camera as a child, it was Roberts’ start making photographs. After pursuing an MFA at the Pratt Institute, it only took three months of working for a commercial photographer in NYC for him to know that the life of a professional photographer wasn’t for him. Happily a job in an ad agency in Manhattan led to a long career in marketing including being the Head of Marketing for Conde Nast publications. And that allowed Roberts to follow his photographic muse for his entire life untethered to the requirement for his photographs to support himself and his family.

He moved to Montclair in 1986, and joining Studio Montclair a local arts organization he began exhibiting his work locally, as well as in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, and Rome. In 1990 and again in 1999, he received grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Roberts seems to have multiple projects going on at once. And regardless of the project, his work is lyrical, and emotionally resonant. Each image seems to have a mysterious narrative in which both Roberts, and the subjects ask questions of us.

In Vesey Street, made in NYC in 2018 with an iPhone, Roberts captures a moment in public time. We are drawn at once to the bold graphic elements, the almost forlorn objects near the curb, the woman, seemingly in a hurry on a windy day, and finally the remarkable shadows. A story without an ending and fraught with questions.

Look at Cathy77/Cathy21. Herein are two portraits of the artists wife; one made when she was twenty, and one 44 years later. Note that both images are rotated. Having done this, Roberts throws us just a little bit, but in doing so, the young woman faces the grown up mature woman whom Roberts has spent his life with. Her beauty resonates in both portraits combining to create a striking love letter. And the water? That’s for you to figure out.

Find his muse again in Cathy2020. An image made with a full-sized Canon camera while walking in South Dakota. You can hear the crunch of your feet on the wild grass as you feel the wind blowing. This photograph is full of information. Chock full. Yet, it’s up to us, the viewers to take that data, and write the Roberts narrative. We confess: this one is one of our favorite photographs.

Finally, Backyard Reimagined, made in 2020. Roberts has a large body of work wherein he manually handdegrades some of his original photographs, and in this one he has created a collage of three separate images on three pieces of paper, then physically combining them and re-photographing them together to create the final piece: his backyard during the Covid lockdown when we all were confined, and many of us reimagining various aspects of our lives. Beauty, elegance, and contrast are all parts again, of a Roberts narrative about his reaction to Covid, and the found fragility, and loneliness of the period in time.

You can find more of Roberts’ remarkable work on his Instagram as well as his website.

Daily Skin Care Routine

Step 1: Cleanse

It is key to cleanse your face in the morning and at night. Cleansing in the morning removes any dead skin cells that have turned over on your face after sleeping, while washing your face at night removes makeup, sebum, and oil production from the day.

Step 2: Tone

Toning prepares the skin for additional serums, so it is important to use one that does not irritate the skin. Avoid toners that have harsh formulas and use minimally to avoid drying out the skin. It is also best to opt for

Step 3: Apply Eye Cream

Be gently when applying, as the skin around your eyes is thin. Using your ring finger, tap your eye cream on the lids to avoid damaging the skin.

Step 4: Exfoliate

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells that have accumulated in our pores. If you struggle with blackheads, acne, or breakouts, you’re not going to want to miss this step. It is best to exfoliate after toning and before moisturizing. Most dermatologists agree that you should exfoliate one to three times a week, but this depends on your skin type and how it reacts to exfoliation.

Step 4: Use a Serum

Serums help with specific skin needs. Whether you choose vitamin C, retinol, or hyaluronic acid, serums give a concentrated dose of ingredients to your skin.

Step 5: Moisturize

Besides hydrating your skin, applying a moisturizer will lock in all the ingredients you applied beforehand.

Step 6: Apply SPF

In the morning, apply sunscreen to avoid UV damage which speeds up the aging process and can cause skin cancer.

Food, drinks, gifts, and time with family make the holidays a merry occasion for people across the country. However, all that celebrating can sometimes become a distraction from maintaining heart health.

“The holidays are a busy, often stressful time for many of us,” said American Heart Association Chief Clinical Science Officer Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D., M.S., FAHA.

“Routines are disrupted. We may tend to eat and drink more and exercise and relax less. We’re getting too little sleep and experiencing too much stress. It’s important to be aware that these factors can snowball, increasing the risk for a deadly cardiac event.” Consider these tips from Dr. Elkind and the experts at the American Heart Association.

Tips for the Holidays

Know Symptoms and Take Action

Heart attack signs vary in men and women, but it’s important to recognize them early and call 9-1-1 for help. The sooner medical treatment begins, the better chances of survival and preventing heart damage.

Celebrate in Moderation

Eating healthfully during the holidays doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself. There are ways to eat smart—limit sodium intake and look for small, healthy swaps that help you feel your best while eating and drinking in moderation.

Practice Goodwill Toward Yourself

Make time to take care of yourself during this busy season. Reading a favorite book, meditating or even playing with pets are productive ways to reduce stress from the family interactions, strained finances, hectic schedules, traveling and other stressors that can be brought on by the holidays.

Keep Moving

The hustle and bustle of holiday preparation often pushes exercise to the side, but it’s important to stay active as much as possible. Go for a family walk or play physically active games with loved ones.

Stick to Your Medications

Busy schedules can cause some people to skip medications, sometimes even forgetting them at home or not getting refills in a timely manner. Try using a medication chart as a reminder, and be sure to keep tabs on your blood pressure numbers.

Three Ways Sweet Cherries Support Your Winter Wellness Routine

Sweet cherries may conjure images of hot summer days, so who knew that they could be a year-round staple for good health? These sweet snacks provide just the wintertime boost needed to stay on track with any fitness and nutrition New Year’s resolutions.

Winter can pose a challenge to eating right and staying in shape. Certainly, nothing beats the flavor of fresh sweet cherries, but with some preparation and creativity, their goodness can be enjoyed all year long. Those who stocked up on sweet Northwest cherries during their short harvest window and planned ahead to freeze, can or dry them now have a bounty of flavor and nutrients to fuel some of the most grueling months of the year (and for those who didn’t, a trip to the freezer or dried food aisles at the supermarket may work just as well!).

“Maintaining a fitness routine can be challenging during the winter. For many of us, it’s dark and it’s cold, yet despite all the reasons we may want to shake off our routines, paying attention to our health and focusing on nutrition now will set us up for better health year-round,” says Kelly Pritchett, PhD, RD, CSSD, Associate Professor of Nutrition and Exercise Science at Central Washington University.

“As a Pacific Northwest resident and winter sports enthusiast, one of my favorite wintertime health hacks is incorporating sweet cherries into my diet,” continues Pritchett. “Cherries often get overlooked when the warmer months fade, and yet they’re a tremendously versatile fruit and are easy to weave into everything from oatmeal to smoothies. Sweet cherries also offer an abundance of health benefits and can be a great natural health aid for winter sports.”

Sweet cherries are a natural and tasty source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium and melatonin. They also contain anthocyanins—the pigment that gives dark sweet cherries their deep and delicious color—which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects. According to Pritchett, anyone with a training regimen can realize at least three distinct benefits from adding cherries to their daily fruit intake.

A few of Pritchett’s winter training regime tips include:

• Decrease your muscle soreness: Several studies involving athletes suggest that cherry consumption can reduce muscle soreness and also help return loss of strength. By incorporating fresh, frozen or dried cherries into their diets, fitness fanatics may recover more quickly for the next workout.

• Improve your quality of sleep: Everyone needs a good night’s rest, and the melatonin in sweet cherries

can promote sleep quality. Sleep is critical to everything from restoring energy to boosting immunity to enhancing metabolism. A serving of sweet cherries about an hour before bedtime can help stabilize and regulate sleep patterns.

• Boost your post-workout recovery: A body that goes through a strenuous exercise routine needs to recover, and dried sweet cherries are an ideal post-workout snack. They provide healthy carbohydrates and help replace glycogen, which gets the body ready for its next go-around.

For those pursuing health and fitness goals, incorporating sweet Northwest cherries into the daily routine is one of the best ways to show some love and stay on track. More information about the health benefits of sweet cherries and the studies that support them is available at sweetcherryhealth.org.

PASSION: Inside & Out

Do you remember your dreams?

Sometimes it helps to write down the dream as soon as you awake otherwise the details seem to evaporate later on. This one was interesting so I wrote down most of what I remembered and then researched the rest in the books I was quoting and referencing to make sure I didn’t leave anything out.

Here was my dream… the other night I was presenting to a group of people on what it takes to make someone great. During the presentation I was talking about baseball and how constant practice builds the confidence to step up to the plate and perform. It was a metaphor for any profession where the depth of your skill and knowledge becomes great when you immerse yourself into the techniques at a whole new level. I used the late great baseball legend Ted Williams as an example. In the book, The Science of Hitting, he shares a story of how he would practice when he

“I don’t think you can emphasize enough the importance of practice. When I say practice, I mean with a bat. In the spring that means hitting pepper, or down at the iron mike machine getting some extra licks, or just swinging a bat. As a kid I was always swinging a bat, an old Bill Terry model, pretending I was in the Polo grounds, two outs, two strikes, two on, “here’s the pitch… bow!” Another tremendous imaginary home run. Even as I get older, I’d have a bat handy all the time, a heavy bat to swing during the winter, something to fool around with under the coconut trees on the Florida Keys.”

It’s this behavior that engrained his techniques into his mind so when he went to the plate his muscle memory would take over. This type of passion, vision and training fascinates me because of the way it not only hones your skill but also creates confidence and a relaxed approach when tested under pressure. In my dream I was demonstrating a method called “physiological memory.”

I did this by showing how many movements it takes your fingers to button up your shirt. I tried it slowly and counted each individual movement with both hands which came out to nine moves.

Do your fingers have memory from repeating movements over and over? So much so that you do not think of them each time you do it. They flow as one movement.

Yes, there are many methods that go into making someone great in their profession, but I have to agree with Ted that having a passion for practice and continuous improvement is omnipotent.

Here are some thoughts on the actions you could take to improve your performance at the plate.

• What mentors can you reach out to who know more than you and have accomplished the goals you’re setting out to achieve?

• What are you reading about your passion or profession that can increase your knowledge and overall understanding of your craft?

• How much hands-on experience and practical application do you have? Are you putting everything you’re learning to the test?

The key is being able to replicate your actions so they become so ingrained that they become part of you.
