4th Grader is Working Her Way Up in the Entertainment Business
Actor, singer, dancer, and model, Brooke Ginsberg, 10, of North Caldwell, has landed a part on Sesame Street. She recently played Marta in the Sound of Music at the Riverdale Performance Center, was in an ad for the SlooMoo museum in NYC and was featured in the Christian Broadcast Networks Gizmo Kids episodes. In her spare time, Brooke sings in the choir at her temple, and in the Broadway Youth Ensemble in NYC. Brooke says she likes what she does but that it is hard work, and she is working her way up. She also says she loves the business because she enjoys meeting new people and making friends. Her goal is to perform on Broadway.
North Caldwell Resident is Named Educator of the Year
Jody Lazarski of North Caldwell has been selected as the Garden State Film Festival’s Educator of the Year. The Video Production teacher for Passaic County Technical Vocational School’s district submitted a few award-winning films of her students from 11th and 12th grade into the competition. “I’m humbled, happy, and flattered to have received this honor, and I am so proud of my students. It is an honor to be recognized by your home state,” says Jody. She enjoys teaching, encouraging her students and giving them the confidence to stand out. “These students’ work set the bar really high for the next group of kids coming into my class and for me as a teacher,” she says.
Local Mom Creates App
Pam Tepper of Livingston has created an app called U.S. Change Maker that offers visual support for making change. She says that her son, Ben, 23, who is on the autism spectrum, was having trouble making change at his coffee shop job.
Ben’s short-term memory hindered him in making change, and someone at work would have to help him. Wanting him to be able to do his job independently, Pam reached out to her cousin, Sam Sinno, with her idea for an app.
U.S. Change Maker allows the user to input the amount of a charge and determine the change, but unlike other changemaking apps, U.S. Change Maker shows images of which coins to give back, simplifying the process. Once launched as a free app in all app stores, U.S. Change Maker received 200 downloads in just two days. “This app is a gamechanger to expand employment opportunities,” says Pam.

Freshmen to Run Sports Camp for Young Girls
Two ninth graders from Livingston High School, Kiera D’Souza and Tvisha Reikhy, will run a sports camp for girls in grades one to four this summer. The goal is to introduce different sports to the girls in hopes of helping them find their athletic passions. The camp will run for one week, from 5-6:30 pm at Riker Hill Elementary School. Both girls are high-school athletes, with Kiera running track, and Tvisha playing softball. By encouraging the young girls, they hope to help them build a strong foundation in sports so they can go on to have many more athletic achievements. In addition, Kiera and Tvisha recently held a drive to collect new and gently used sports equipment for a school in Newark. “We wanted to give back and thought running this drive would be a great way to do so,” says Kiera. For more information please email kmardsouza@gmail.com or tvishareikhy@gmail.com.
Teens Compete in Robotics Competition
Connor Sherwin, 13, of Montclair, and Taylor Anthony, 14, from Bloomfield, competed as the 2-person robotics team Jolly Blue against teams of 10-16 people at the First Tech Challenge Competition. They came in second and received the Inspire Award. Next, they advanced to the semifinals and took home the Control Award. The robot, which had to drive to poles of different heights and place cones on top, took five months and over 1500 man-hours to build and program. The team designed custom 3D printed parts and developed a first-of-its-kind differential swerve drive that enabled it to drive 360 degrees, which they open-sourced for anyone else to use. “I’m really proud of how we did as a 2-person team, especially in only our second year of competing,” says Taylor. “It was very gratifying to see our hard work come to fruition in the state championship,” says Connor.
Teen Founds Swim School Focused on Improving Psychological Health
Upon recognizing the negative psychological effects of the COVID-19 quarantine on people of all ages, Prisha Bhargava, a junior at Livingston High School, and member of the school’s swim team, founded a swim school to provide her community with an outlet and a coping mechanism for life’s unexpected changes, stresses, and challenges. Prisha, a 2019 qualifier for the Junior Olympics, and aspiring psychiatrist, harnessed her personal experience, her research in medicine, and her love of swimming to develop the Oasis Swim School during the Summer of 2021, which she also ran in 2022, and plans to run in 2023 and beyond. “As an outgoing person and an avid swimmer, I struggled greatly during the COVID-19 quarantine,” she said, “My outlet for self-care is swimming, and I went from swimming daily to not swimming for months. While dealing with that experience, I realized how impactful physical fitness and socialization are on people’s overall mental health.” For more information, go to: www.oasisswimschool.com.

Montclair Teen to Run English Camp in Ecuador
By Jackie Schatell
This summer, Mathew Jalili, 15, from Montclair, will be running an English camp for needy children ages 7-12 in the rural community of Pablo Arenas, in Ecuador. It will be his third year running the free camp in the town with only 2,000 residents.
Two summers ago, when his summer plans to go to a sleep-away camp were canceled because of Covid, Matthew decided to go and visit his grandparents in Ecuador. He planned to be there for three weeks. After meeting many of the people in the town where his grandparents lived, Matthew got an idea to teach some of the kids how to speak English. His mom knew of
a company called Xplorer that sponsored resources for programs like the one Matthew wanted to start.
A representative from Xplorer came to Ecuador to help Matthew teach English at the camp, which ran for a week. The kids learned English, had snack time, and played games all in English including Bingo, charades, and soccer. They also did arts and crafts.
Matthew says he loved helping his students because they were close to his age. “They were funny and welcoming,” he says. He was able to communicate with them in Spanish, which helped. He says that due to the impact that the camp made on the community, he decided to make it an annual program.
Matthew started with a small class of students. By the second summer the class grew to 18 students. He says he had even more resources and training to share with the camp. He plans to bring the camp to 25 students this summer. Right now, he has 11 kids confirmed.
“Running the camp is a lot of fun,” says
Matthew. “It is a great experience. I didn’t think I would do it again after the first time, but there was so much interest, I was thrilled to be able to offer it last summer, and to be able to run it again this summer.”
Mathew says that this summer he plans to expand the program and run it for a longer time. In addition, Xplorer will be sending more teachers.
“In one week there are definitely improvements, but if the camp ran for a longer time, there would be even more,” says Matthew.
The experience has been eye-opening for Matthew. He says he has grown to be more patient and tolerant.
In addition to the summer camp, Matthew plans to expand the program and offer interested students virtual lessons beginning this fall. He is fundraising to get tablets for the students and has enlisted his friends and classmates to volunteer to conduct the virtual sessions with him. You can find more information about this program on his website www.xplorerkid.com.

S.O.S. Ministry at St. Catherine of Siena Parish Helps Those in Need
By Jackie Schatell
St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Cedar Grove has offered outreach ministry to neighbors in need since 1951. In 2011, after parishioners expressed an interest in getting even more involved, the Parish created Shepherds Of Service (S.O.S.), the Parish ministry where adult parishioners and young families participate in service activities to help the marginalized and disadvantaged. Through S.O.S.’s hands-on, person-to-person activities, parishioners work side by side, serving in time-sensitive ways to help people at-risk.
Now in their 13th year of service, in 2023 alone, S.O.S. will have performed 74 service activities – 51 activities for adult parishioners’ participation and 23 activities for young families. In its first ten years, S.O.S. led over 700 one-on-one outreach services, which assisted thousands of homeless, hungry, and working poor in the greater area. Even during COVID, when inperson activities were impossible, S.O.S. supported its partner-organizations with contactless collections in their parking lot. The line of cars often wound its way out into the street. S.O.S. Coordinator,
Pat Braun, shared that in 26 Contactless Collections over two years, parishioners were extraordinarily generous, donating: 6,000 sandwiches; 16 carloads plus 3,913 pounds of sustainable foods; 2,100 warm gloves, socks, and scarves; 12 carloads of personal amenities; $6,400 in food gift cards; 7,500 filled plastic Easter Eggs; $12,518 in cash, and more.
The not-for-profit organizations which S.O.S. supports regularly include Bridges, where they make sustainable lunches for emergency distribution and make and serve fresh sandwich lunches at Bridgesdesignated street corners in Newark; Community Food Bank of NJ, where they work warehouse shifts in Hillside, packing non-perishable foods as well as weighing, bagging and labeling dry goods; Covenant House, Newark and Nancy’s Place, in Montclair where they engage the youth in fun activities; Eva’s Village/Community Kitchen, in Paterson, where, on each first Friday of the month, they serve lunch to over 400 people and make “to go” food bags; and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital/ DePaul Clinic where they provide fun
activities for pediatric patients. In addition, the S.O.S. Handmade With Love ministry crochets sleep mats out of plastic bags for the homeless, and hand-makes scarves, puppet dolls, and cuddle blankets for people in need.
The religious education program at St. Catherine of Siena, which instructs 573 children, also contributes to S.O.S. with donations, including Thanksgiving and Valentine Treat Bags, Dunkin’ Donuts Days, Kindness Cards, and Christmas Gifts. St. Catherine of Siena School, which educates 257 pre-K through grade 8 students, helps support S.O.S. organizations, too, by donating items like Amenities Gift Boxes and Sustainable Lunch Foods.
Rev. Juan Jose Esteban, Pastor of St. Catherine’s, often pops into S.O.S. activities and is a strong advocate. He says, “S.O.S is a win-win-win. People in need receive critical, life-sustaining services. Our parishioners grow in faith. And our faith community expands and strengthens.”

Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center to Celebrate 25th Anniversary at Yankee Stadium
The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center (YBMLC) will celebrate their 25th anniversary celebration as part of Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium to commemorate Yogi Berra’s participation in the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. While Yogi signed with the New York Yankees in 1943, he put his baseball career on hold to join the Navy. During the invasion of Normandy, Berra manned a landing craft support vessel from which he said he “sprayed bullets and rockets across the heavily fortified beach fronts before the troops landed.”
The celebration includes a pre-game on-field presentation of the Yogi Berra Museum Awards: David Cone, 5-time World Series Champion, Best Teammate Award Recipient; Suzyn Waldman, NY Yankees Color Commentator, Radio
Hall of Fame Inductee, Carmen Berra Award Recipient; Anthony A. Yoseloff, Philanthropist, Community Volunteer, Humanitarian Award Recipient; John Flaherty, Former MLB Player, YES Broadcaster, Awards Presenter; Christopher Jackson, Emmy and Grammy-Award winning Singer, Songwriter and Actor, National Anthem
“Yogi’s legacy extends far beyond fans of the Yankees and baseball. But it also feels wonderfully fitting to celebrate the Museum’s 25th anniversary at Yankee Stadium on D-Day,” said Eve Schaenen, Executive Director of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center. “And there’s really no better place or time to honor this year’s Yogi Berra Museum Award recipients, who are such outstanding ambassadors for the values that made Yogi an American treasure
and that continue to drive the work of his Museum. We’re all looking forward to a fantastic day of celebration and commemoration.”

THE ROOT CAUSE OF CHRONIC PAIN
Local Doctor explains the negative impact that chronic stress has on our bodies, and what she and her team are doing to help those in her care live lives free from pain!
Inflammation is an integral part of your body’s defense system.
You twist your ankle stepping off the curb and the area around the injury immediately begins to swell and fill with heat. Blood circulation increases and an army of white blood cells rush the area to ward off the perceived threat and prevent further injury. The same happens if you cut your foot on a sharp shell while walking the beach, when you get the flu from your children or grandchildren, or if you bump your head on a cabinet door that your spouse forgot to shut.
In acute doses, inflammation is a vital immune response that harnesses the potential to protect us. So why is inflammation always getting a bad rap?
“Unfortunately, this immune response sometimes occurs when it shouldn’t and for longer periods of times than is necessary,” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair.
“Autoimmune disorders, untreated injuries, exposure to toxins - all of these can be causes for chronic inflammation.
The biggest culprit though, is stress.”
Janet D. of Livingston sought treatment at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine after several doctors and specialists were unable to treat what she thought was run-of-the-mill arthritis. “I hurt all the time and while I’ve always managed to get out of bed, some days it felt like getting up in the morning was going to be the hardest thing I did in this life.”
Prior to her consultation with Dr. Aleksandra, Janet had tried prescription medications, steroid injections, and physical therapy with little to no success. “I was at the end of my rope. My husband was at the end of his. He is actually the one who first read about Dr Aleksandra and how she is using acupuncture and ozone therapy to treat pain and fatigue. The only thing I had to lose at that point was him. He’s been so kind and patient through this whole ordeal, but I could tell this was just as hard on him as it was on me. I mean who wants to watch while the person they love suffers nearly every day.”
The staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine understands that the chronic
pain and complicated conditions they specialize in treating are often a family affair and encourage loved ones to accompany patients to their consultation, even treatments. Dr. Aleksandra explains, “It’s very rare that the kind of pain our patients suffer from is felt alone. It causes disappointment when they have to cancel plans with their family. It causes resentment when they don’t feel well enough to do the things their spouse wants to do. It causes frustration when they are unable to play with their grandchildren. So, when our patients have a support system on their healing journey, it greatly increases their chances of success, of getting back to living their life.”
Having a loved one present has also proven to be beneficial during the consultation process. “As we discussed Janet’s medical history and delved into when her pain and fatigue started, her husband mentioned that it was around the time they lost their son,” shares Dr. Aleksandra.
“It’s just not something I normally discuss.” tells Janet. “Especially with people I just meet. There are still so many emotions surrounding that day.”
In Janet’s case, this turned out to be vital information. As Dr. Aleksandra shared, stress can be a major contributor to chronic inflammation and the emotional turmoil from losing a loved one, especially a child, is quite simply unfathomable. Studies have shown that people who have recently lost a loved one have
inflammation levels 54% higher than average. And when you consider that chronic inflammation is at the root of major health disorders like heart disease, cancer, obesity, and autoimmune conditions, it’s safe to say that you can quite literally die from a broken heart.
Of course, inflammation caused by stress goes way beyond grief and loss. The staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine have seen chronic inflammation in patients with high stress jobs, couples who are going through a divorce, and even people in the process of building their dream home. The body reacts to stress by releasing chemicals and hormones that are meant to be short term but when that stress is unmanageable or continues for long periods of time it can cause increased inflammation and a myriad of other chronic health problems.
Janet has been a patient of Dr. Aleksandra for almost three months and couldn’t wait for the opportunity to sit down and share her success story. Never understand how tiny needles and oxygen can make such a huge difference, but at this point I’m so happy it doesn’t really matter… [Dr .Aleksandra] saved my life, and my marriage! I’m still grieving and l’m not sure that will ever go away but the treatments, the staff–it’s reduced my physical pain, so I finally have the energy to face life, to show up.”

A Musical Excursion of Sites & Sounds
The nonprofit Livingston Symphony Orchestra has attracted professional level players and audiences in West Essex and for over 50 years. Maestro Anthony LaGruth and the orchestra invite the public to “Sonic Vistas,” a concert “play-cation” of beautiful sights and sounds.
This musical excursion begins in Moscow with Borodin’s ‘Khovantchina Overture,” an exquisite tone painting of dawn breaking over a river. Travel continues along the expansive grasslands of Asia, blending Russian and Oriental melodies, in Mussogorsky’s lyrical “In the Steppes of Central Asia.” Next, the audience can experience the elegance of Old Vienna in Strauss’ “Blue Danube Waltz,” followed by a contemporary as well as historic tribute to Italy’s beautiful capital city, captured by Respighi in his “Pines of Rome.”

On Father’s Day, June 18th, surprise Dad this Father’s Day with the unique gift and unforgettable experience of a train ride on one of Morris County’s historic railroads— a day trip that will create memories for years to come! Step back in time at the non-profit Whippany Railway Museum where a larger-thanlife train provides a 45-minute, round trip ride. On board this limited-time event, you’ll travel the route of “The Whippanong Trail”, where General Washington’s armies trod in the bitter Winter of 1779—an area rich in our country’s history. For a slightly higher fare you can upgrade your excursion experience by choosing to ride in one of our premium cars—the award-winning Lackawanna Railroad Subscription Club Car No. 2454, which radiated elegance on a train once known as ‘The Millionaire’s Express.’ Or select the Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast.’ It is a beautifullyrestored car that features all the amenities offered by the CNJ’s deluxe Blue Comet passenger train of the 1930s. The Blue Comet has a striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space.

NEUROPATHY BREAKTHROUGH
“It’sas though I’m stepping from razor blade to razor blade.” “It feels like my feet are under attack by fire ants.”
“Like I’m walking on wet paint and rolled up socks.” And you’re in this kind of pain all the time.
‘It’s relentless, keeping you up at night and preventing you from doing even the most mundane tasks. Things that I used to take for granted, like wearing shoes and going grocery shopping. Two of my three children were getting married last year and wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to attend their weddings,” shares Barbara W.
Barbara was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2015, a degenerative condition affecting almost 5% of people over the age of 55.
“My doctor sat me down and said ‘Barbara I’m so sorry to tell you this but you have neuropathy. I’m going to prescribe you Gabapentin to manage the discomfort but overall, neuropathy is untreatable.’ My first thought was ‘we can cure cancer but you can’t stop my feet from hurting?’ It felt like a cruel joke.
While neuropathy can be caused by a number of things including diabetes and chemotherapy, over 23% of neuropathy cases are classified as idiopathic. In layman’s terms, the cause is unknown.
This was the case with Barbara. Eventually she was forced to quit her job because numbness started to set in and prevented her from driving. Fortunately, Barbara saw an article on Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine and the work they were doing to treat neuropathy. “I thought it had to be a sham. After so many specialists told me there was no hope here was this Doctor saying she had a 72% success rate in treating it! I just had to call, and I can’t even begin to tell you how grateful I am that I did.”
Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM founder of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, says that cases like Barbara’s are incredibly common. “Almost all of my neuropathy patients have been told at one point or another that there is no hope. I like to think I specialize in hope.”
To quote the New York Times, “Chinese medicine proves itself where Western medicine fails”. Dr. Aleksandra elaborates, “Acupuncture has been treating complicated, chronic conditions
like neuropathy for thousands of years. I start with a foundation based on this time-tested science and my more than a decade of clinical experience. I then tailor treatments based on several factors including the severity of your neuropathy, how long you’ve had it, whether or not there are any underlying factors, things of that nature. It’s because of these personalized treatment programs that we’re seeing such incredible results!”
Five months later Barbara is back at work and thriving! “Working isn’t even the most exciting part,” exclaims Barbara. “Not only was I able to attend my son’s wedding but I could walk down the aisle! It was the most magical moment and I have Dr. Aleksandra to thank for it.
If you’ve recently been diagnosed with neuropathy, it’s time to call Dr. Aleksandra and the staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. Call (973) 444-8932 to schedule your very own comprehensive consultation and visit SashaAcupuncture.com to take advantage of their new patient offer, a $49 consultation (normally $240).

CIPRIANO LAW OFFICES Takes Mediation to the Next Level
By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein
Led by Melissa Cipriano, Esq., MBA, Cipriano Law Offices, has been helping
families resolve Family Law issues amicably since 2003. The attorneys on staff all have trial experience, and four are court qualified mediators.
Family law is one of the most emotionally and financially complex areas of law. For some, the life that they had planned for themselves is no longer an option. This can seem devastating and overwhelming. For others, the decision to split is made amicably and both spouses seek an efficient, thorough journey through the process. The lawyers and legal team at Cipriano Law Offices understand how personal Family Law problems can be. Their goal is to obtain meaningful results that best serve their client's interests.
Using her strong financial and mediationbased background, Melissa understands
business valuations and handles high earner situations. She also serves on the prestigious Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel, is a qualified Family Law Economic Mediator, and a Parenting Coordinator. As a Parenting Coordinator, she helps families learn to communicate so as to preserve relationships between the parties and with children.
According to Melissa, “Resolving issues amicably through mediation helps to reduce legal costs and maintain relationships between spouses. Mediation is a process where people begin to compromise in ways that benefit families and children.”
The firm offers mediation either in-person or over Zoom; for domestic violence and restraining order cases, the office is set up with separate entrances where parties can remain separate from one
another. The attorneys at Cipriano Law Offices understand what is at stake in a divorce, their over 90 combined years of experience gives them insight into how the court will view issues and allows them to guide parties to the best possible solutions either through mediation or litigation.

ALEX POLNER: Direct From Broadway
Story and portrait by Dan Epstein
It’s an old story: a kid from Great Neck grows up, works in the theater, retires and makes Art. Sort of. Montclair resident Alex Polner, after studies at Indiana University, and graduate work at Syracuse in set design did move to NYC and spend most of a decade designing theatrical sets. When not working, he spent quite a bit of time studying anatomy and drawing from life at the Art Students League in NYC, though putting that pursuit aside as he started his next career where his experience designing sets led him to designing displays for toy companies.
It was on a vacation in Ireland thirty years later when he spontaneously began sketching while in a pub with his wife that he re-embraced his forgotten love of drawing from life. Upon his return to the states he began to draw in earnest, and after retiring from the design world during the pandemic, he made drawing his full-time career. Currently he is at the Riker Hill Art Park, a former Nike missile base in Livingston, now an artists community, at open model drawing sessions at least 3 days a week, and working at his own studio the rest of the time. Here are three works he shared with us.
In Fifty-Ninth and Lex, an 8.5x100 pastel drawing, Polner, who finds pastels an expressive, yet forgiving medium, worked from a photograph he’d made at the subway stop. We love the use of color, and the way he captures the very real body language of everyday people simply waiting for the train. It was the woman in the brightly colored shirt who was the only person not wearing a mask that captured Polner’s eye while waiting himself during the pandemic. This drawing won an award at an Art Center of Northern New Jersey exhibit.
Another subway inspired work, Rush Hour, a 14x20 inch pastel is awash in brilliant colors, and again Polner captures the spirit of ordinary people using mass transit. He loves the trains as subjects simply:
“…because of the people on them. I love how people deal with the space they are in.” Here, a woman was interacting with her son who is out of the frame, sitting next to a man who was completely lost in his thoughts. Note the hand to the far left, subject unseen, but busy on his phone.
Art of Essex
Alex Polner
28 Suburban Essex June 2023
Finally, in Tell Me, an 18x22 pencil drawing, drawn from life at Riker Hill in three, three hour sessions over a three weeks period, Polner has captured the interaction of a husband and wife. While the subjects were on or next to the sofa as he worked, the rear wall in the scene was improvised by the artist drawing on his background in set design and created just for this work.
Polner currently has work in a group show with other Riker Hill artists at the Livingston Senior And Community Center through June 29th, and also in an exhibit at the JCC-Metrowest from June 11-July 28.

Grace Loves Lace Iconic Gowns for Today’s Brides
By Jackie Schatell Photos courtesy of Grace Loves Lace
Finding the perfect wedding gown for your special day can be daunting. There are so many things to consider—from style, to material, to functionality, to price point. Luckily, the choice has become easier to make for women looking for style that doesn’t sacrifice comfort.
Founded by Creative Director Megan Ziems, Grace Loves Lace, in Montclair, with showrooms in 26 locations across the globe, is iconic in the bridal industry for innovative dress construction and fabric that prioritizes quality, luxury, and comfort. GRACE gowns, which are free from boning and corsetry, are designed to work with your body, not against it.

Grace Loves Lace Iconic Gowns for Today’s Brides
“This means that brides don’t feel restricted and uncomfortable for 10 hours on their wedding day,” says Megan. “To us, that is a very important factor! We've shown women that wedding dress shopping can be a wonderful, personal experience where they can find a dress that represents their style and their values. Expectations over the last decade have increased significantly on what women demand for their wedding dress experience, and we are proud to have pioneered that.”
When asked about her ideal client, Megan says, “We tend to relate and connect with women that all have common threads of wanting to feel effortlessly beautiful and comfortable. She wants to dance, eat and drink without a second thought at her reception. She cares about how her dress was made and she recognises
(continued from the previous page)
and values authenticity and quality. She’s liberated, adventurous, passionate and fun. I’ll never forget being told by a bride that she chose GRACE because ‘there are lots of beautiful dresses out there, but Grace Loves Lace makes you FEEL something.’ That makes everything we do worth it.”
At Grace Loves Lace, a bride's journey often starts before she enters the showroom. Megan says, “She has been saving our dresses to her wedding Pinterest board for years or she has just discovered us on our social media, and she already aligns with our brand. She is looking for a gown that represents her personal style, is ethically and sustainably made, and is a reflection ofher, so when she walks into our showroom for her appointment, we are already friends and that’s how we welcome her and her guests.”
34 Suburban Essex June 2023
Megan Ziems
Every bride is offered the full GRACE award-winning experience. They are greeted by a stylist and offered complimentary champagne or tea, before settling into their own private styling suite surrounded by their bridal party and loved ones. “We want every bride to have an experience that is dreamy, memorable, and most importantly, fun,” says Megan.
Brides will usually try on five different gowns and then finish the appointment back in their favorite gown complete with veil and all the accessories. “We encourage photos to be taken and the bringing in of guests to discuss options,” says Megan. “Some brides find ‘the one’ on their first appointment, other brides need two appointments and that is okay, we aren’t pushy salespeople and never want brides to feel pressured.”
The gowns take up to six months to produce; however, Grace Loves Lace provides a priority service, and offers ready-to-wear styles with limited stock available for last-minute brides. They also carry a wide range of veils, accessories, jewelry, shoes, and occasionwear, as well as dresses for bridesmaids and flower girls.
“My favorite part is seeing all of the incredible GRACE brides wearing Grace Loves Lace on their big day and they love sharing their wedding albums with us,” says Megan. “Seeing our brides walk down the aisle in their dream dress—there’s no better feeling! Receiving our GRACE bride wedding photos and their positive feedback postwedding is something that is so inspiring to me—I still pinch myself each and every time.”

Enhance Your Outdoor Comfort with Retractable Awnings The Perfect Solution for Sun Protection
When it comes to enjoying your outdoor spaces, awnings play a crucial role in providing shade and ensuring comfort even on the hottest of days. That’s why many homeowners opt for retractable awnings, as they offer the flexibility to adapt to changing weather conditions. On scorching summer days, you can extend your awning fully, creating an oasis of shade. As the temperature cools, you have the freedom to leave the awning closed, allowing the warm sun to embrace your space.
Retractable awnings offer a myriad of advantages, with the fully enclosed hood safeguarding the fabric and enhancing the lifespan of the motor. Moreover, their compact design sets them apart from stationary awnings, making them an ideal choice for those seeking convenience and versatility.
At Window Works, we take retractable awnings to a whole new level. Contrary to popular belief, our awnings offer adjustable pitch options, allowing you to
customize the angle according to your preference. You have the power to raise and lower each corner independently, granting you ultimate control over the shade and sunlight distribution.
For those seeking additional coverage, we provide optional drop-down shades for our retractable awnings. Our solar screen shades serve as a valuable shield against the sun’s rays, especially when it hits your patio or deck at a lower angle. Attract Birds with the Right Seeds
While almost all bird seed may look pretty much the same to you, it doesn’t to the birds you’re feeding. Knowing what kinds of seeds different birds like can help you attract a variety of fine feathered friends to your feeders. Consider these popular seed types and the common backyard birds they attract:
Safflower
These white seeds are slightly smaller than black sunflower seeds. Because they are bitter, grackles, blue jays, starlings—and squirrels—don’t like them. However, they do attract doves, purple finches, chickadees, titmice and downy woodpeckers.
Nyjer
These lightweight, tiny seeds are a favorite of goldfinches. Put nyjer seeds in a hanging feeder with tiny holes so the small seeds won’t get blown away. Nyjer also attracts redpolls, juncos, doves, indigo bunting and pine siskin.
Sunflower
Black sunflower seeds attract blue jays, goldfinches, woodpeckers, purple finches, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches. Striped sunflower seeds appeal to chickadees, doves, grosbeaks, northern cardinals, nuthatches, titmice and woodpeckers. Sunflower hearts (also known as “hulled sunflower” and “sunflower chips”) attract chickadees, common redpolls, juncos, doves, finches, goldfinches, grosbeaks, nuthatches, pine siskins, titmice and woodpeckers.
White Millet
Good for scattering on the ground, white millet attracts ground feeders such as juncos, sparrows, indigo buntings, towhees and mourning doves.
Cracked Corn
Popular with ground feeders, cracked corn appeals to doves, crows, jays, sparrows, juncos and towhees. Avoid getting finely cracked corn as it’s vulnerable to rot and can quickly turn to mush.
When choosing a bird seed mix, pay attention to the ingredients list on the package. Bird seed is required by law to list ingredients in order of content. Some cheaper mixes have filler seeds such as wheat, red milo, red millet or “assorted grain products.” Most backyard birds won’t eat those, and your seed mix could end up wasted on the ground.

Keeping Hardwood Floors Magnificent
With its rich tones and distinguished style, hardwood flooring can be a beautiful design element of your home. However, it’s important to know the proper care procedures to maintain its condition for decades to come.
Consider these tips for keeping hardwoods in tip-top shape:
Guard Against Water
Water can penetrate deep into the wood, causing stains and ruining the outside finish. Use plastic trays under potted plants and pets’ bowls. Wipe up spills and accidents immediately.
Use Area Rugs
If you have any heavy traffic areas – by the front door, hallways or around the kitchen table or couch, for example – use area rugs to protect against wear and tear. Area rugs are also an easy way to boost the style factor of your home.
Take Off Your Shoes
Encourage family members and guests to take off their shoes when they walk in. Shoes can bring in sand and dirt, so position area rugs at door entryways to act as barriers.
Sweep or Vacuum Regularly
Dust and dirt can act as sandpaper, wreaking havoc on your floor’s finish. A weekly sweep can help keep this at bay while enhancing your flooring’s general appearance. If using your vacuum, be sure to use an attachment with soft brushes to guard from additional wear.
Clean Naturally
For a deep clean, ditch the harsh chemicals. Simply pour 1 cup of vinegar into a bucket with 1 gallon of water, mixing well. Use a soft mop and move in the direction of the floorboards. Go over with a clean, soft towel to dry excess water.
By following these simple steps, you and your family will be able to cherish your hardwood floors for many years to come. Learn more at eLivingtoday.com.

Due to their small size and heavy usage, bathrooms can become messy, cluttered areas for many families. For those with smaller bathrooms, storage solutions can be even harder to find. Consider these organization tips to make your bathroom a clean and functional space for every member of the family:
Assess the Mess
Go through all the cabinets and drawers to clear out unused makeup, health care products and medications. Make sure the items you keep are used on a regular basis. Items used sparingly should be placed in an alternate location.
Go Vertical
Medicine cabinets can quickly get stuffed when combs, toothpaste and other toiletries are stored horizontally. Use organizer cups with suction adhesives to contain items vertically and save space.
Hang Up in Style
Old coat racks and ladders make perfect solutions for larger families to hang multiple towels. Snag an old one from a thrift store and paint it a bright hue, like red or turquoise, for a stylish bathroom accent piece.

with These Simple Steps
Avoid Spills & Squirts
Hair products, such as gels, mousses or hairsprays, can create sticky, tough-to-clean messes if liquid escapes the container in a drawer or cabinet. Avoid such mishaps by placing these types of items in plastic tubs instead of directly in the drawer or on a shelf.
Divide & Conquer
Bathroom drawers can become unruly if not organized. To keep items separate and tidy, insert dividers, such as those used for kitchen utensils. These often come in fun materials, such as bamboo or stainless steel, to add a fresh look.
Assign Cabinets or Drawers
Try to use a large enough cabinet so each member of the family has his or her own space or drawer. This can help limit the amount of items high-maintenance family members can bring into the small area. Plus, it makes it easier for everyone to find their things.

My worst sunburn ever was from laying out on an overcast day. I didn’t expect to get much of a tan, let alone sunburnt, given the conditions. I was especially unconcerned since I couldn’t see any color change at the time. But by evening, my skin was a bright pinkish-red, and the pain set in. I couldn’t wear clothes and had to call in sick for two days.
Aside from severe sunburn, there are other equally important reasons to take extra precautions in the sun, especially during the hot summer months.
Skin cancer is the most widely recognized health problem resulting from sun exposure. To reduce your risk:
• Avoid afternoon sun.
• Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least fifteen minutes before you go out and then reapply every two hours.
• Look for products carrying the Skin Cancer Foundation’s blue seal of approval.
• Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs as well as a hat to shade your face.
The sun’s rays also damage our eyes. Exposure can cause cataracts as well as damage to part of the retina, cornea, and lens. Cheryl Khanna, M.D. of Mayo Clinic, recommends wearing sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Also, some sunglass
designs offer better protection. The best designs to block out as much UV rays as possible are wrap around or close-fitting sunglasses.
The risks of dehydration and heat exhaustion also increase during warmer months. It’s important to drink several glasses of water every day of the year, but especially during the summer months. If you’ll be in the sun or heat for any length of time, take plenty of water with you. Better yet, carry sports drinks, since they contain electrolytes. Also, try to restrict outdoor physical activity to cooler parts of the day.
Special Considerations for Babies
Sun exposure also increases the risk of cancer to children. This is of particular concern for babies because of their sensitive skin. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, a sunburn on a baby can be much more serious and result in high fever, dehydration, blistering, and heatstroke.
To protect babies from the sun, keep them out of the direct sun from 10am4pm. Dress them in lightweight clothing that fully covers their bodies. Keep their heads covered with hats or sunbonnets with 4” brims.
For travel, place babies in the center position of the back seat or cover the car windows with UV-blocking film. Also, to keep infants and young children hydrated, carry Pedialyte, which is an excellent source of electrolytes.

The owner, Bryan Umiker, is a local resident and twentyyear veteran of the mattress industry, having previously worked in executive roles for Bloomingdale’s, Casper, and Bed Bath & Beyond. The Ethical Mattress Company opened earlier this year, and strives to help their customer get everything they need to achieve a great night’s sleep while putting the principles of sustainability into practice.
First, Ethical Mattress takes a ‘farm to bedroom’ approach. All of their mattresses use natural and organic materials and contain no petrochemicals, polyfoams, fiberglass or toxic laminates. To achieve this goal, Umiker worked closely with two New Jersey factories to ensure these standards were met. Next, the company does not dump their customers’ old mattresses in a landfill, instead they recycle them. “There are no mattress recyclers in New Jersey,” he explains. “So, my delivery guys and I are doing the recycling ourselves. We’re able to separate and recycle approximately 85 percent of the materials and keep them out of the landfill.
Umiker says, “The Ethical Mattress uses ‘Everyday-Low’ pricing that provides significant savings versus other retailers. “I spent years at a department store and am familiar with their high-low pricing and extreme markup structure. When I opened this store, it was important to me that we give our customer fair and transparent pricing.”
At The Ethical Mattress there are no high-pressure sales tactics. Instead, the customer is encouraged to take their time in choosing a mattress. “Our number one priority is to help our customers solve their sleep problem. We have the experience and knowledge to help the customer make the right choice, but it is important to take our time and get it right,” says Umiker.

Natural Wound Care Solutions
Many people look for natural products with “clean” ingredients, especially in the food, beverage, skin care and beauty categories. In fact, the market for clean label ingredients is projected to reach $64.1 billion by 2026, according to Allied Market Research. For many common ailments or minor injuries, there’s a natural treatment that can be used in place of hard-to-pronounce ingredients and preservatives.
“This same kind of clean ingredient demand is migrating to the first-aid space with many of these natural alternatives being used to treat anything from scrapes and bug bites to wound odor and pulled or sore muscles,” said Dr. Billy Goldberg, a “New York Times” best-selling authorand emergency room physician. “In fact, some companies are beginning to incorporate these kinds of natural and efficacious ingredients right into their products.”
TruYou Dental is redefining dental care by improving the smiles and lives of our patients. We continuously pursue excellence using a high quality, team approach to create an exceptional patient experience.

Goldberg and the first-aid experts at CURAD, which have made adhesive bandages since 1951, offer these suggestions for natural ingredients you can use at home to treat common ailments:
Epsom Salt
Named for a bitter saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England, Epsom salt is not actually salt but a naturally occurring mineral compound of magnesium sulfate. Long known as a natural remedy for several ailments, Epsom salt can be used to relax muscles and relieve pain in the shoulders, neck and back. It can also be applied to sunburns or dissolved in the bath to help relieve sore muscles or detox.
Aloe Vera
Few things soothe sunburn like aloe vera. With analgesic, anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that ease the healing process, aloe vera gel contains phytochemicals that help reduce pain and inflammation. Also helpful in the healing process of cuts and scrapes, the CURAD Naturals line of adhesive bandages are infused with aloe vera in the wound pad and surface of the bandage, which is enriched with the antioxidant vitamin E to help soothe and moisturize skin.
46 Suburban Essex June 2023
Hydrogen Peroxide
A mild antiseptic that can be used to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes and burns, hydrogen peroxide is often used for the initial cleaning of wounds. Simply apply a small amount on the affected area – alternating with water to avoid killing good bacteria – to help release oxygen, which causes foaming that aids in cleaning and the removal of dead skin.
Baking Soda
Bicarbonate of soda, commonly known as baking soda, can be used for more than baking. From removing stains to cleaning teeth and more, it can also be used to help treat a variety of wounds. In addition to being an odor absorber, it can be applied to insect stings and bites, such as those from bees or mosquitoes.
Whether making a paste using baking soda and water then applying to the bite or using an option like CURAD Naturals adhesive bandages featuring baking soda, the chemical compound can help soothe the skin. In addition to absorbing wound odor, the bandages provide skin-friendly comfort and stretch with a four-sided seal to keep dirt and germs out.
Manuka Honey
A honey native to New Zealand, manuka honey contains methylglyoxal as an active ingredient and has unique antibacterial properties that speed healing and help prevent and fight infections when applied as a topical wound treatment. It may also help soothe coughs and sore throats, prevent tooth decay and improve digestive issues.

Don’t Wait to Donate! Blood & Platelet Donors Needed Now
The American Red Cross asks people to book a time to give blood or platelets now to address a recent drop in appointments that could lead to fewer transfusions in the weeks ahead. Type O blood donors are especially needed to ensure a strong blood supply. Summer can shake up normal routines, but it’s important for donation appointments to stay on the calendar. More than 42 million Americans are expected to travel over the holiday, meaning fewer donors may be available. Appointments are critical this week for people waiting for lifesaving care.
Those who come to give June 1-30 will receive a $10 gift card by email to a merchant of their choice. Plus, volunteers will also be automatically entered for a chance to win a backyard theater package including a projector and screen, projector tripod, smokeless fire pit, Adirondack chair set and a movie night snack package.

Lose Weight, Feel Great
A NEW PROGRAM WITH MULTIPLE BENEFITS
By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein
Three months ago, Montclair Rejuvenation Center in Verona and West Caldwell implemented an exciting new weight-loss program for its clients By using a medication called Semaglutide, the medical spa is helping people slim down and get healthy.
“It’s been around for years and was originally used to treat diabetics. but they found that people who took it were losing weight,” says co-owner, Dr. Kell Distefano. “So now we’re using a compounded version of it for our clients to help lose weight. It works by lowering blood sugar levels and delaying gastric emptying, which makes people feel fuller longer.”
Her husband and co-owner, Edward Fritz, who manages the business side of the practice. has tried it and has lost 30 pounds over three months. “I’m now at four months and I feel good,” he says.
“Since the program has begun, the vast majority of patients have seen good results,” says Dr. Kelly. “This allows our patients to basically hit the reset button by getting to their desired weight, learning new lifestyle habits, and maintaining that desired weight.”
Semaglutide is given by injection. “Injections are once a week, so patients get four shots in a month,” she says. “We also provide a B12 shot every two weeks for energy. After every two to three months that a patient is on the program, we send them to do blood work to make sure everything is normal.’
Clients are weighed every week and also undergo a full body scan, which does a muscle fat analysis and shows their BMI. basal metabolic rate. and visceral fat level. So patients are not just losing weight, they’re also seeing the other changes going on in their bodies.

FACE TO FACE MEDICAL SPA Offers Treatment by a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon
By Jackie Schatell, photos by Dan Epstein
Patrons of Dieci in Livingston are in for a treat—they now have access to a renowned Board Certified Plastic Surgeon at Face To Face Medical Spa, which is housed at the salon and led by Medical Director Dr. Paul Figlia, who has been a plastic surgeon specializing in face and body cosmetic surgery for men and women for over 20 years.
“When you look at medi spas across the nation, you do not see many such spas with a plastic surgeon onsite running the medi spa, who is performing the services and giving the injections themselves,” says Dr. Figlia. “That makes us very unique in the field. Our patients get first-rate services from a board certified plastic surgeon. We are offering services at the highest level.”
Dr. Figlia, who also has an undergraduate degree in fine art, says that he has always had a tremendous interest in working with and educating patients about achieving beauty with rejuvenation in a healthy way.
He and his team offer the following treatments and services: VIRTUE RF/VIVACE – Microneedling, Motus – Laser Hair Removal, Physiq – Body Contouring, and Cool Peel Fraxel CO2 Laser. In addition, Botox, a full compliment of Fillers, as well as PRP Injections for facial and hair rejuvenation, and more are offered.
“Motus AX, which is effective and painless hair removal, is a real game-changer for men and women,” says Dr. Figlia, a pioneer in the field who was the first physician in the state to offer this service.

Dr. Figlia has consistently been named as a top doctor in Top Doctor in NJ, Top Doc, and Castle Connolly, and was named Best Dressed Doctor in Inside New Jersey in 2009.

Dr. Paul Figlia
A True Family Orthodontic Practice
By Deborah Schapiro
For many children, wearing braces can be an arduous rite of passage. However, for Livingston orthodontist, Dr. Gigi Paralkar, orthodontics was not only a positive experience but a transformative one.
She explains, “As a child, I desperately needed braces and knew it. I had a lot of orthodontic treatment, and it completely changed the way I looked and felt about myself. Years later I wanted to give others what I had.”
Dr. Paralkar also had a couple of powerful role models: “My father was a general dentist, and when I was young, I used to go to his office with him and watch him work. My own orthodontist was another inspiration; she was an Indian female, just like me.”
After unexpectedly losing her father in 2003, Dr. Paralkar, then a consultant at IBM, decided to honor his legacy and
pursue her own childhood dream. She excelled at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, was the chief resident at Rutgers Orthodontic program and has been in private practice since 2014.
Dr. Gigi, as she is known to her patients, prides herself on running a true family practice. She says that in addition to numerous sibling patients, “We have a lot of parents in braces or Invisalign alongside their kids. I also treat a lot of adults as more patients in their 50s, 60s, and 70s want to improve their smiles.”
Whatever their age, the initial consultation is followed by unrushed appointments and highly personalized treatment. Dr. Paralkar says, “We are not part of a corporate practice. My team includes Jenny at the front desk and my assistants Erin, Ashley and Daniela. As a boutique practice, we
really take the time to get to know all of our patients and they get to know us.”
Naturally, the practice keeps up with constantly changing technology. Dr. Paralkar notes that she is continually enhancing her skills with continuing education. Examples of cutting-edge technology offered at Livingston Family Orthodontics include intra-oral scanning and offering Spark™ Aligners, which are even less visible than Invisalign.
Dr. Paralkar concludes, “I feel honored that patients have chosen to entrust their mouths to us, and blessed that I get to do a job that I love.”

SCOTT SPIRO, MD
Surgeon by Trade, Artist at Heart
By Christine S. Maxwell
ASurgeon by Trade, Artist at Heart, describes Scott Spiro, MD, perfectly. A renowned plastic surgeon, Dr. Spiro maintains a busy private plastic surgery practice in West Orange, treating patients across the globe. He also has affiliations with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Livingston Surgery Center. Applying his strong concept of beauty, he creates terrific outcomes by combining art and medicine.
Beautiful forms created through art have shaped Dr. Spiro’s whole life. As an undergraduate, he began his lifelong pursuit of visual arts. And he realized his calling early on when he decided that his greatest pursuit would be to focus on visual arts in medicine. Later, after completing medical studies at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School, he completed a five-year general surgery residency (during residency, he illustrated numerous articles in medical journals).
With this unique background in art and medicine, he entered the prestigious plastic surgery program at the University of Miami. “The University had a three-year waiting list for entry into the program,” he says. “They looked for candidates who could think outside the box and were very creative. My unique background allowed me to do this.”
His artist perspective is evident in all his endeavors. Often, he arises early to work on his art before beginning his day as a surgeon. Patients view many of his acclaimed pieces in oil, graphic, and photography as they enter his medical office. Further, he views each patient as a potential work of art. “An artist sees the world differently,” explains Dr. Spiro. “I can see the past, present, and future beauty that I can create in my patients. People trust my vision, and they trust my art.”
Dr. Spiro specializes in the cosmetic surgery of the breast, body contouring, facial aesthetic surgery, and breast cancer reconstruction. His award-winning medical spa offers CoolSculpting, Botox, Xeomin, cosmetic fillers, Diamond Glow facials, chemical peels, microneedling with PRP, and medical-grade skincare.

Putting The “I Care” in EYE CARE
By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein
A Highly-Experienced Surgeon Providing Personalized Treatments
For Dr. Kurt Jackson of Jackson Eye Care, LLC in Livingston, the most rewarding aspect of being an eye surgeon is having the ability to help maintain, restore and even improve vision for his patients. And, all treatments are conducted in a warm and comfortable environment. “We are always cordial and place an emphasis on making the patients feel like we hear and understand their concerns,” he says. “When the patient gets to me, I make a point of taking extra time to help the patient understand their condition and how I intend to care for them.”
Truly placing an emphasis on patient care and incorporating this personal touch into his practice is just one of the ways it stands out. “Our patients are never made to feel like they are ‘just a number,’” says the vitreoretinal surgeon.

Be Well Psychotherapy Focuses on Solutions
“Takecare and be well” is the phrase psychotherapist Lauren Taibi, LPC, NCC uses when concluding her client sessions. She used it to name her five-year-old West Caldwell practice, which now includes nine therapists. Focusing on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), they treat adults and teens, and offer grief and bereavement counseling, as well as couples and family counseling.
“CBT is solution-focused, allowing people to think about something differently, then feel differently about it,” Taibi said,
adding that, “therapy doesn’t have to be forever. Sometimes three or four sessions is all that’s needed.”
She knows reaching out can be intimidating. Some worry about costs. Be Well accepts many insurance plans, and can be reached by call, text, or email for an initial appointment. The pandemic caused an uptick in anxiety. Therapy can aid in putting coping tools in place.
“We work as a team,” Taibi said, helping clients “be well.”
Jackson Eye Care also stays up to date on the latest findings and treatments. “We provide them with state-of-the-art technology and evidence-based care,” says Dr. Jackson. “We couple this with a caring and compassionate staff that does its best to accommodate all of our patients’ needs.”
Another important factor he and his staff take seriously is providing immediate and continuing feedback to referring doctors. This way, they are not, as he says, kept “in the dark” with regards to the management plan for their patients. When not in the office, Dr. Jackson, who is also a former U.S. Army medic, prefers to spend his free time with his family. “As a father of two teenagers and a ‘twenty something,’ there is always an activity or event waiting for me.” His wife, Kai, is also his practice manager.

Healthy Beginnings in Dental Care
Tyra Manso, DDS—Montclair Pediatric Dental Care
By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
Montclair Pediatric Dental Care (MPDC) provides area children ages one through college with complete and comprehensive dental services. Tyra Manso, DDS, a boardcertified pediatric dentist, and her caring staff provide an array of dental services to meet the needs of their young patients.
When Dr. Manso was establishing her practice in Montclair, she was looking for an ideal space. An old dance studio that she found fulfilled her dreams. By converting the studio into a children’s haven, she celebrated her young patients’ creativity and artistry with
décor and created a safe, nurturing environment for treatment.
Preventative care and early positive dental experiences are central to her practice. “We like to bring patients in as early as age one, so we can teach them how to care for their teeth and to eliminate any fears,” she says. “Our goal is to have patients have lifelong positive experiences at the dental office.”
Healthy beginnings in dental care create a lifetime of healthy habits and a beautiful, lasting smile. MPDC achieves these goals through positive interactions with its young patients.

Dr. Matthew Wachtler knows all about “de agony of de feet.” He is an experienced podiatrist and Board-certified foot surgeon specializing in both arthroscopic and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, sports medicine, wound care and diabetic foot care. In addition to seeing patients in his Cedar Grove office, he is also on staff at both St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and Overlook Medical Center in Summit.
Dr. Wachtler is up to date on all the latest techniques and procedures used to treat foot pathologies. For example, laser surgery has been used on toenail fungus for over 10 years, but it has only recently been used to treat tendinitis, sprains and other soft-tissue injuries. He says, “The lasers themselves have changed over the past 20 years. They were originally used only to burn tissue; now they can be used along with physical therapy as treatment for soft tissue injuries.”
He adds, “I really enjoy what I do; what my staff and I most enjoy is the connection we make with our patients.”

With a chef and a certified nutritional therapist background, she finds innovative ways to help her clients receive the ultimate benefits of good food. Veronica previously worked as a private chef in San Diego, specializing in organic cuisine. With each meal, she included a specially prepared beverage. Full of green plant nutrients, this drink was an instant hit. Word spread quickly of this magical concoction as clients experienced improvements in their energy, hair, skin, nails, weight loss, and lowered blood sugar. Soon, she decided to focus solely on health-enhancing beverages and soups. Chef V became her signature restaurant.
In San Diego and her second location in West Caldwell, Chef V promotes this organic green drink low in sugar and nonhomogenized to preserve its nutrients. The menu includes the original beverage, protein shakes, and vegan soups, and packaged plans for detoxification and weight loss. A national business, most products are shipped directly to clients. Helping People
Facing Infertility Issues
Fertility Coach Becky Ackerman’s business, Lily & Bee Fertility, helps women who are having trouble conceiving maximize their natural fertility by focusing on the mind-body connection and learning to manage stress. “Stress often plays a role in infertility as it wreaks havoc on hormones, blood flow, and mindset,” says Becky. “And infertility is a vicious cycle of stress and more stress.”
Becky teaches clients how to relax and feel more confident on their fertility journeys using breathing exercises, visualizations, and meditation. For example, she says that the act of taking long exhales signals the nervous system to relax and can quickly bring stress levels down. The techniques she uses are appropriate for women hoping to conceive naturally, as well as those using IUI or IVF.
Having dealt with infertility herself, the mother of three says she wants to share the knowledge she picked up along the way with others facing infertility issues.

TruYou Dental Offers Friendly, Modern Care

Team, technology and treatments are the three T’s setting West Caldwell’s TruYou Dental & Facial Aesthetics apart, said Dr. Justin Kang. “We take a team approach to a patient’s care,” he states, which means most treatment can be done in one place.
The latest technology includes 3-D X-rays, the use of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for faster healing from surgical procedures, and both WaterLase Laser and and Fotona Laser to treat gum disease in minimally invasive ways and Pinhole Surgical Technique® for gum recession.
TruYou Dental provides an all-natural therapy for facial rejuvenation using Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) using the patient’s own blood. PRF is more than three times effective when compared to Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP, and has more growth factors to promote collagen formation. This is because PRF does not contain any artificial additives or chemicals!
“We focus on the relationship of oral health to overall health,” said Dr. Kang. Studies show that bacteria in the mouth can contribute to other medical issues, such as cardiovascular
The office also offers oral and intravenous sedation for patient comfort, Dr. Kang noted.

Robert Kool Bell: It’s about hanging in there and dealing with the ups and downs of the music business over the years. Especially after Covid. A lot of us weren’t working in the music business and it affected the entire world. Part of it is sticking in there and coming up with new ideas and new products.
How did you deal with some of the obstacles you’ve encountered over the years?
When we lost our lead singer James “J.T.” Warren Taylor people said; “Hey, what are you going to do now?” Before J.T. We were very successful… Summer Madness, Jungle Boogie, Hollywood Swinging and it goes on and on. Never stop creating and moving forward. One thing our parents always told us is to stick together.
What are some of your new products out there today?
We have an album coming out this July called, People Just Want To Have Fun, working with the original member of the band, George Brown. People do want to have fun. All the shows that we are doing now you see that everybody is coming out again. They’re happy about things. They’re happy about life and enjoying themselves. I think that’s very important.
We have been blessed to continue to stay out here and come up with good music. For instance, we are the most sampled band in the world. They are now celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, and we are the most sampled band in hip-hop. You have James Brown and at one time he was the most sampled band.
I saw that you have Le Kool champagne out in the market. Tell me about that.
A quick story on that. We were touring in France to sellout crowds about 7 years ago and the promoter came to me and said he’s doing a champagne with Barry
White, and one of The Bee Gees and wanted to know if I’d like to sell the champagne on our tour. I said, I don’t think our fans would want to buy a bottle of champagne after our concert. They are more into hats and T-shirts. I told the promoter I want to get on the shelves like Cristal and Dom Perignon. He didn’t expect that from me, and we went on to create Le Kool champagne and brought it from France to America. We cut the deal and my son Hakim and Marc Goldberg are building the market. We just signed a deal with Norwegian Cruise Line and looking at the Celebrity Cruise Line and additional markets.
What is something people don’t know that you’ve not shared with the media?
We are working on a documentary and book called “Hollywood Swinging” and also a movie. Here’s something your readers might not know. We produced 3 albums at the House of Music in West Orange, NJ. We did the “Celebration” album, “Something Special” Album and “Lady’s Night” album.
Any career advice for somebody young who’s looking to enter the music field or any profession?
You have to be serious about what you want to do. You have to stay strong through all the setbacks and difficulties. If you’re going to school or trying to learn a trade, or become a lawyer or any profession the key is to stay strong, not give up and keep going. Have faith.
Kool’s wife came up with the “Kool Kids Foundation” several years ago to get music back into the schools. Education is important to him, be it music or whatever you’re going to school for.
Kool’s Golf Outing Charity Event takes place July 11, 2023 at Cedar Hill Country Club. Kool will have 20 celebrities appearing including Lawrence Taylor, OJ Anderson, Ken Griffey, Sr., Ja Rule and Chris Tucker.
