Montclair’s Waterbury Road to Headline Jam Fest at WellmontArts Plaza
St. Aloysius Church in Livingston Celebrates Cultural Diversity at Annual International Night
St. Aloysius Church on Bloomfield Ave. in Caldwell, buzzed with excitement during this year’s International Night. The annual celebration showcased the vibrant diversity within the parish and local community, featuring cultural representations from Ireland, Italy, Colombia, the U.S., Germany, Ukraine, the Dominican Republic, and more.
Over 200 parishioners celebrated together, starting the evening with a presentation of the American flag by the Rev. Tom Blind and a local veteran, accompanied by “America the Beautiful.” The event continued with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, followed by a blessing from Rev. Monsignor Robert Emery.
Rev. Lynx Soliman, the energetic Master of Ceremonies, kept the dance floor lively and introduced a variety of performances. Coordinated by Dr. Cathy Gibbons and her team of volunteers, the event was a colorful tapestry of cultural fusion and unity, allowing residents and parishioners to mingle and learn about each other’s backgrounds. The night exemplified the spirit of community and respect for diverse cultures.
Get ready for a musical extravaganza this summer as the Wellmont Arts Plaza at 5 Seymour St, in Montclair, hosts a series of free outdoor concerts, with Waterbury Road taking center stage at the Montclair Jam Fest on July 27 at 5pm. West Orange Teen Wins Montclair Screenwriting Competition
Madeleine “Maddy” Beetar, a 10th grader at West Orange High School, has won Montclair Film’s Emerging Screenwriter Competition for her screenplay, “Sirens.” This captivating story follows Alice and Pietro, a deaf girl and a young man who survive a perilous night on a pirate ship thanks to Alice’s inability to hear the deadly siren songs that ensnare the crew.
I was shocked and proud,” Maddy shared. “I felt honored to see my work recognized.”
Beyond the contest, Maddy is actively engaged in her school’s Screenwriter’s Society and newspaper, is currently writing a novel, and this summer, she will be attending a Filmmaking Workshop at the School of Visual Arts, NYC.
Additionally, thanks to her contest win, she had the unique opportunity to creatively consult on a film script with Emmy Awardwinning writer Timothy Greenberg, a producer and writer, known for “Living with Yourself,” (2019), “The Detour,” (2016) and The Daily Show (1996).
With a bright future ahead, Maddy continues to pursue her passion for storytelling.
Montclair Local Author Pens Moving Short Story Collection
Nancy Burke, a seasoned writer from Montclair, found inspiration in Hilma Wolitzer’s short story collection, “Today a Woman Went Mad in the Supermarket,” prompting her to revisit her own works. Her book, “Death Cleaning and Other Units of Measure,” is a culmination of decades of storytelling, featuring 16 moving stories that explore the diverse roles women inhabit in their lifetimes— daughter, sister, wife, and mother. Each narrative offers a blend of introspection and empathy, capturing the essence of women’s (and some men’s) experiences with striking accuracy.
Published by the same house as her previous work, Apprentice House, “Only the Women are Burning” (October 2020), this collection reflects Nancy’s deep understanding and empathy, drawing readers into the emotional landscapes of her characters. The stories range from the humorous to the heartbreaking, with characters such as a man in love with his GPS’s voice and a young wife inspired by a dead seagull. Nancy’s latest collection is a testament to her insightful storytelling and profound connection with readers. Her earlier works include, “If I Could Paint the Moon Black” (2014), and “From the Abuelas’ Window” (2005), stories of refugees.

WEST ESSEX FIRST AID SQUAD: A Pillar of Volunteer-Driven Emergency Medical Care
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
TThe West Essex First Aid Squad (WEFAS), a self-funded and volunteer-run organization, is a critical lifeline for the community, providing emergency medical care to the five towns of Caldwell, Essex Fells, Fairfield, North Caldwell and West Caldwell.
Annually, the squad responds to nearly 3,000 patient calls, offering Basic Life Support (BLS) services while paid paramedics handle Advanced Life Support (ALS). WEFAS’s 17 dispatchers and 75 EMTs, the majority of whom live and work in the community, respond 24/7/365, ensuring prompt and effective medical care. They also provide standby service at over 50 events per year, including football games, graduation ceremonies, parades, concerts, 5K’s, and fairs.
When an ambulance is needed, 911 dispatches WEFAS which provides emergency medical care at no cost to the patient or their health insurer, enabling them to deliver unrestricted, prompt medical assistance.
WEFAS’s operations are highly efficient and coordinated, thanks to their 87-year
relationship with local police, fire, and hospitals. This collaboration ensures a seamless transfer of care from police to EMS and area hospitals, demonstrating exceptional organization and teamwork.
Equipped with 4 ambulances, a rescue truck featuring the jaws of life for vehicle extrication and scene lighting on highways, rehab unit and response vehicle, WEFAS provides rescue services, transport, basic life support, and rehab to monitor and ensure the health and safety of firefighters during prolonged fires. WEFAS also manages mass casualty events and evacuations and stores and maintains essential supplies like oxygen and bleed control kits for such events.
WEFAS relies on community support to maintain operations, which costs $225,000 annually, along with a reserve for vehicle and equipment replacement and building repair. WEFAS is currently remounting an ambulance box onto a new chassis and engine and replacing its auto loading stretcher at a total cost of $185,000. Currently, the cost for one new ambulance is well over $200,000.
EMS, unlike police and fire, is not considered an essential service in NJ, so funding from local, county and state taxes is not required. Fundraising efforts, including WEFAS’ annual Spring and Fall fund drives, are vital.
Community Outreach Coordinator, Paula Sules, emphasizes, “WEFAS is a 100% volunteer organization whose preparedness is unmatched. WEFAS does not bill for services and is a selffunded 501(c)(3) non-profit. Although the municipalities we serve make annual donations, they cover just 15% of expenses. WEFAS relies primarily on the generous support of local residents, businesses and community organizations.”
WEFAS exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and community support. Their unwavering commitment to providing free, high-quality emergency medical services is a testament to the power of collective action and dedication. The squad’s volunteers are true heroes of their community.

KICKING FOR INCLUSIVITY: Montclair United’s Soccer Programs Transform Lives
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
MMontclair United Soccer Club (MUSC), a club serving more than 1,500 children in Montclair, is making strides in the community by also providing inclusive soccer programs for all children, including those with special needs. Their initiatives, including Glenfield in the Park and TOPSoccer, as well as those in partnership with other local organizations, showcase their commitment to diversity, inclusion, and making soccer accessible to all.
GLENFIELD IN THE PARK: BRINGING SOCCER TO ALL NEIGHBORHOODS
Glenfield in the Park aims to address transportation challenges by bringing soccer programs directly to underrepresented areas of Montclair. This initiative targets children aged 6 to 10, ensuring they have access to soccer training without the barrier of transportation. By hosting practices in different parts of town, Glenfield in the Park allows children to participate in soccer activities close to their homes, fostering a sense of community and inclusion.
TOPSOCCER: CONNECTING KIDS WITH DISABILITIES TO SOCCER AND MENTORS
TOPSoccer, short for The Outreach Program for Soccer, is a standout program within MUSC. Designed for children and young adults with intellectual, emotional, and physical disabilities, TOPSoccer offers an inclusive environment where participants can enjoy the game. The program pairs each child with a high school volunteer, creating a unique one-on-one experience that promotes not only soccer skills but also meaningful friendships.
Nicolas Carrillo, one of the TOPSoccer student leaders, highlights the program’s growth, noting, “When I started volunteering, we had about 10 kids. Now, we see 20 to 25 players every session and as many volunteers.” The high school volunteers play a crucial role managing all the logistics, organizing games and leading all the activities that are both fun and enhance social interaction for the participants.
NAVEGADORES PROGRAM: EMPOWERING IMMIGRANT FAMILIES THROUGH SOCCER
In collaboration with the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE), the Navegadores Program supports children from immigrant families, primarily from Latin America. MUSC works with MFEE to offer after-school and weekend soccer sessions, helping these children further integrate into the community.
Dan Rivlin, President of MUSC shares, “This program is a win-win for the kids, MUSC, MFEE and the community. It helps these children experience soccer, develop their skills, and feel embraced as new neighbors. Our partnership with MFEE has allowed us to extend our reach to further support a diverse group of children and foster a more inclusive, welcoming town.”
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE (“SOCCERSHIPS”)
Understanding that financial constraints can be a barrier to participation, MUSC offers financial assistance for those in need. “Soccerships” ensure that children from low-income families can participate in recreational and travel programs without the financial burden. By prioritizing inclusivity, MUSC ensures that no child is left behind due to financial limitations.
Montclair United Soccer Club’s dedication to inclusion and community support is evident through their innovative programs. These initiatives not only bring soccer to all corners of Montclair, a town known for its diversity, but also create a nurturing environment where every child, regardless of their background or abilities, can thrive and enjoy the beautiful game.

VISUAL VOICES THROUGH THE LENS: EMPOWERING OTHERS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
LLisa Rayman Goldfarb, a photographer from Maplewood with a portrait studio in Millburn, dedicates her life to capturing special moments and teaching others the art of photography. She views her passion as more than just a profession; it’s a powerful medium for storytelling. Whether she’s taking a portrait, creating fine art, or teaching someone how to use a camera, her mission remains the same: using her photography skills to inspire and empower others.
Lisa’s charitable spirit is woven deeply into her work. One of her deepest collaborations has been with Isaiah House, a family shelter in East Orange. Introduced to the organization in 2016, she quickly started photographing the staff, residents, and events. She also co-chaired the Happy Spaces Project, which invited local designers to revamp the shelter’s interiors, transforming cinder block walls and cement floors into inviting, modern spaces. Lisa helped to raise awareness and money for the project as well as documenting the entire process from start to finish. Recently, she and fellow photographer Jamie Meier, donated their time to take portraits of Isaiah House families for Mother’s Day.
She has also extended her charitable reach internationally. While living in Hong Kong, Lisa worked with the Centre for Refugees, using her photography skills again to raise awareness and money.
Lisa is similarly dedicated to education. She teaches photography to both children and adults, sharing the fundamentals and nuances of capturing light and emotion. Her ultimate goal is to raise money to buy equipment so that she can extend these lessons to underprivileged children, giving those who may not have access to cameras or classes the chance to learn this valuable skill.
A commitment to community is evident in Lisa’s involvement with local events.
She frequently donates portrait sessions for school fundraisers and sports teams, helping raise money with her art. She also participates in events such as Millburn Girls Night Out, where she volunteers to engage with locals.
Lisa’s journey is one of creativity, passion and giving back. Her work in photography transcends traditional bounds of the profession, making a tangible difference in the lives of the people she photographs and instructs. By empowering others to see more sharply through the lens, she helps them find their voices and tell their stories, one image at a time. Her charitable endeavors, combined with her educational initiatives, make Lisa a vital part of the community. She keeps finding new ways to use her skills for the greater good, proving that a picture is worth even more than a thousand words when it helps change lives.

A Pillar of Community and Library Advocacy in Millburn
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
DDorothy Kelly of Short Hills embodies community spirit and dedication, tirelessly working to make her town a better place. She is renowned for her unwavering commitment to improving local services, fostering unity among residents, and enhancing educational programs.
As the President of Friends of the Millburn Library since 2018, Dorothy has spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at revitalizing the library and supporting the community. Dorothy’s passion for libraries is evident in her relentless efforts to promote their relevance in the digital age. “People don’t realize how much more libraries offer beyond books,” she says. From educational programs to community events, the Millburn Library has become a hub of activity, thanks in large part to Dorothy’s advocacy.
One of her major projects is the annual library book sale, an event she has managed since 2017. The sale, held every May, involves sorting and selling between 50,000 to 70,000 donated books. Dorothy and her team of volunteers meticulously organize the books, transforming the library’s second-floor auditorium into a sprawling marketplace. This event is not just a fundraiser, raising between $15,000 to $20,000 each year, but also a community gathering where residents can connect and share their love for reading.
Dorothy also ensures the library remains a welcoming space with projects like the library garden, which she and her team maintain, and the installation of permanent Little Free Libraries around town. These initiatives provide constant access to books and encourage a culture of reading.
Beyond her work with the library, Dorothy is deeply involved in educational programs within the Millburn school district. As the chair of the Caring Kids program, she leads character-building classes for students in all the district elementary schools from kindergarten
through fifth grade. These classes cover topics like empathy, understanding differences, and anti-bullying strategies, helping children develop into compassionate and considerate individuals.
In addition, Dorothy serves as the curator of the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society Museum. Her role involves preserving and showcasing the rich
history of the area, ensuring that the stories of Millburn’s past continue to inspire future generations.
Through her various roles, Dorothy has made a significant impact on Millburn. Her dedication is an inspiration. Her tireless efforts exemplify what it means to be a true community champion, making a difference one book, one program, and one smile at a time.

Caring for Fresh CUT FLOWERS Ensure Your Blooms Remain Beautiful
FFresh cut flowers can brighten up any room and add a touch of natural beauty to your home. Whether you receive a bouquet as a gift, purchase flowers for yourself, or pick fresh cut flowers from your garden, it’s important to know how to care for them to ensure they stay fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.
Upon bringing your flowers into your home, it’s essential to trim the stems at an angle using sharp scissors or floral shears. Cutting at an angle increases the surface area for water absorption, allowing your blooms to stay hydrated. Remove any foliage that will be submerged in water, as this can lead to bacterial growth and decay. Only leaves above the waterline should remain on the stems.
Select a clean vase that is the appropriate size for your bouquet. Make sure to wash the vase thoroughly before use to prevent bacterial contamination. Fill the vase with clean, room temperature water. If you have flower food, add it to the water according to the package instructions. Flower food provides essential nutrients and helps inhibit bacterial growth. To keep your flowers fresh, change the water every 2-3 days or when it starts to look cloudy. Before adding fresh water, re-trim the stems to ensure optimal water absorption.
Display your flowers away from direct sunlight and heat sources, as these can cause the flowers to wilt more quickly. A cool room will help extend their vase life. Spritzing the petals with water can help keep the flowers hydrated, especially if the air in your home is particularly dry.
Keep your fresh cut flowers away from ripening fruit, as it releases ethylene gas, which can cause the flowers to deteriorate more rapidly. By following these simple steps, you can prolong the beauty of your fresh cut flowers and enjoy them for days to come. With proper care, your blooms will continue to bring joy and color to your living space.
Improve Your Home’s Indoor Air Quality
Improving your home's indoor air quality is essential for creating a healthy and comfortable living environment. Poor indoor air quality can lead to allergies, respiratory issues, and other health problems. Fortunately, there are several simple and effective ways to enhance the air quality in your home.
Dust and vacuum frequently to remove dust, pet dander, and other particles contributing to poor air quality. Pay close attention to carpets, rugs, and upholstery, as these can harbor allergens and pollutants.
Proper ventilation is crucial in circulating fresh air throughout your home and reducing indoor air pollutants. Open windows and doors when weather permits
to let in fresh air. Additionally, exhaust fans should be used in the kitchen and bathroom to remove excess moisture and odors.
Regularly changing the air filters in your HVAC system can significantly improve indoor air quality. Clean filters ensure that the air circulating in your home is free from dust, pollen, and other contaminants.
Simple Ways to Improve Your Home's Indoor Air Quality
Consider investing in air purifiers with HEPA filters, which are highly effective at trapping small particles like pollen, pet dander, and dust mites. Placing these purifiers in high-traffic areas of your home can yield the best results.
Maintaining the right humidity levels in your home can help prevent mold growth and limit the proliferation of dust mites. To achieve a balanced humidity level, use a dehumidifier in damp areas and consider a humidifier in dry environments.
Certain indoor plants, such as peace lilies and spider plants, can help filter pollutants from the air. Introducing these plants into your home can enhance air quality while adding a touch of nature to your living space.
Enhance Your Yard with Versatile LANDSCAPE SCREENS
LLandscape screens serve as practical and visually appealing additions to your yard, offering a versatile way to enhance privacy and aesthetics. These structures can define outdoor spaces, shield unwanted views, and provide a luscious, green backdrop for your garden.
Numerous options are available for various styles and functional needs. From living screens of hedges and climbing plants to elegant wooden trellises and contemporary bamboo or metal screens, living screens can infuse your yard with greenery and create a haven for wildlife, while wooden trellises exude a charming, traditional feel. In contrast, bamboo panels and metal screens offer a more modern and sleek appearance.
The right choice can help you create an enchanting and purposeful outdoor space that aligns with your style and complements your home. Living screens add greenery and habitat for birds and insects, while wooden trellises offer a romantic touch. Bamboo panels and metal screens provide a modern look.

The JOY of DINING OUT CUISINE THAT DELIGHTS AND EXCITES
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
GGrowing up in a large Italian family, Mary Cumella loved making fresh pasta with her grandparents every weekend. This inspired her love of food and cooking, and as an adult, she went on to graduate from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and work with master chefs in many high-end restaurants.
Today, she’s the managing partner of Gioia Mia, which just celebrated its one-year anniversary in April. The name, meaning “my joy,” was the endearment her grandmother used for Mary as a child. The logo is
actually in her grandmother’s handwriting, and there’s also a portrait of her in the dining room.
When you walk in into the restaurant, the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. “It sort of feels like stepping into a cozy haven that wraps you in nostalgia and comfort,” says Mary. “You’re greeted by the aromas of the food and the gentle hum of happy conversations, making you feel as if you’ve been invited into my grandmother’s cherished dining room.”
(continued on the next page)
The JOY of DINING OUT
(continued from the previous page)
Mary and her staff, with their genuine smiles and sincere hospitality, also add to the welcoming vibe.
Of course, no matter how lovely and inviting a restaurant, it’s the food that really needs to entice and delight. This is where Chef Logan Ramirez shines by crafting approachably elegant cuisine. After training and working at many prestigious restaurants, at Gioia Mia, he “puts his broad experience and refined palate to use in crafting seasonal, locally-sourced dishes that are intertwined with elevated comfort,” says Mary.
Some of these outstanding and frequently requested dishes include Dressed Oysters with yuzu granita and shisho, Braised Duck & Taleggio Triangoli with duck jus, foie butter, and chive, and the Heritage Pork Chop, featuring pickled red cabbage, mustard fondue, blood orange mostarda, and hot honey.
Because the menu is seasonal and there are specials often offered, the options are always changing, so guests are inspired to try new combinations of foods and flavors. The restaurant also tries to source ingredients as locally as possible so everything on the menu bursts with freshness.
Since many of their guest come in regularly, Mary and her staff get to know them personally. She is the first face they see when they walk through the door. “We know the names of their family members and pets, and keep track of special occasions.” Many of these momentous occasions, such as birthdays, showers, and rehearsal dinners, are celebrated right in the restaurant, but outside catering is also available.

One of the restaurant’s exciting new endeavors is a food trailer. Lulu’s Truck offers authentic Mexican street food, as well as some globally infused dishes, prepared by head chef, Hugo Xochimitl. Chef Hugo was born and raised in Puebla, Mexico, and “developed a deep love for cooking at an early age, learning traditional Mexican recipes alongside his mother, Irma,” says Mary. During the past 14 years, he has honed his culinary skills, and is now an integral part of the Gioia Mia team.
The truck menu, which includes seasonal agua frescas, chips and guacamole, flautas, skewers, quesadillas, elote, and a wide range of taco options, plus some full size entrees like peanut mole, was developed by Chef Hugo, Pablo Flores and Reyes Toxqui, who are also passionate about Mexican food.
“The trailer is very fun and vibrant with eye catching colors and whimsical artwork,” says Mary. While it doesn’t yet have a stationary location, the truck can travel to festivals, popups at breweries, and private events.

NSuburban Essex READERS’ CHOICE CONTEST
Best of Essex 2024
LOCAL BUSINESSES SUPPORTING LOCAL CAUSES
Now more than ever, it’s important to support our local businesses. In this age of conglomerates and corporations taking over or replacing locally owned businesses, the 15th Annual Best of Essex Contest highlights and celebrates the independent local businesses that most support our local charities, our little leagues, and the arts.
CASA OF ESSEX
You can help! Vote for your favorite locally-owned independent businesses and every vote will help support one of three great local causes. These causes were chosen for their profound impact on the community—from providing nutritious food to those in need, rescuing and rehoming animals, to advocating for foster children—making the Best of Essex a true testament to community support and care.
SUPPORT LOCAL! – VOTING BEGINS JULY 1ST
TONI’S KITCHEN
CASA Essex, operating for nearly four decades, advocates for foster children by pairing dedicated volunteers with them. Led by Executive Director Marla Higginbotham, CASA ensures children in foster care receive personalized support and stability. Volunteers engage monthly with children and collaborate with educators, healthcare providers, and guardians to address all aspects of their well-being. Training and judicial appointment are required for volunteers, who play a crucial role in advocating for children’s best interests inside and outside the courtroom. CASA Essex serves 274 of the county’s 450 at-risk children and continually seeks volunteers and donations to sustain their mission.
Donations are also vital, helping support CASA’s mission and the children they serve. For information, please visit casaessex.org
Toni’s Kitchen in St. Luke’s Church, Montclair, NJ, has a simple mission: to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.
Toni’s Kitchen tackles suburban food insecurity by embedding nutritious food in community spaces. Led by Executive Director Anne Mernin, it addresses structural issues through partnerships with 60 organizations and initiatives like mobile markets and a food truck. With 2,000 volunteers, it runs programs from after-school meals to home deliveries, ensuring all community members have access to healthy food year-round and emphasizing supporting families and seniors. To get involved or donate, visit https://toniskitchen.org.
ROSEMARIE’S RESCUE RANCH
Founded in 2017 by Susan Janett and Rosemarie Cafiero, RRR specializes in rescuing dogs from kill shelters. The ranch offers a unique foster-to-adopt model where dogs are placed with pre-approved families for a two-week trial period, fostering a 98% adoption success rate. If not adopted, RRR ensures suitable placements and provides ongoing support. Supported by volunteers and a resale shop, RRR focuses on veterinary care and donations to sustain operations, having saved over 800 dogs since inception.
The Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch Resale Shop on Bloomfield Avenue funds the rescue, with profits going directly to the animals. Monetary donations, volunteer time, and supplies are always needed. If you are interested in fostering or learning more, contact Susan through Facebook or email at SusanRescue@aol.com.

Making Us Look, And Wonder
STORY AND PORTRAIT BY DAN EPSTEIN
MMany local residents are familiar with the photographic work of Montclair resident Kate Albright. They may have seen her portraits of families in the homes of their neighbors, she has an uncanny way of getting kids to reveal a side of themselves they often keep hidden. Likewise, readers of The Montclair Local, a longtime print and then online newspaper have seen the photographs she’s made over the years covering local news stories. But it’s her fine art photographs that draw our attention this month.
She began to exhibit her personal work, the fine art images she made having nothing to do with news or commissioned portraits, at Studio Montclair in 2014. In the truest tradition of seeing the moments in everyday life that most of us just don’t, she simply intrigues us with her observations while often charming us at the same time.
In Knees, captured in Sitges, Spain in 2019, the simple incongruity stops us in our tracks. Midway between the softness of the sea, and hard edge of the rocks we see a pair of knees.
Seemingly detached from a body, alone on a what seems like a desolate beach we can’t help ourselves from wondering. Who is this? Why is this person here? It’s hard not to be charmed by the incongruity of the moment.
Parking Lot Island, made in 2021, offers us another question. Even after being told that it’s the West Orange Kmart parking lot, visited with her kids after exploring the Eagle Rock Reservation during a period of dense fog, we still can’t help feeling like we’re someplace else. Are we in the middle of a Stephen King novel?
This remarkable photograph won an honorable mention in a photographic contest sponsored the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC called, “The Best Photo Sitting On Your Phone.” We are not surprised.
Another prize winning image, this time at the Viewpoints exhibit sponsored by Studio Montclair in 2018 is On Red. Photographed at SUNY Purchase in 2017 we are struck with the simple beauty of this image, and it’s strangeness. What exactly is going on here? Why are those balloons tied to some kind of tripod, and displayed in
the middle of a startlingly red wall with no decoration on it? We find it hard to look away. You may as well.
Finally, Frozen Towel was photographed in 2022 while taking a walk in Edgemont Park, in Montclair. Albright noticed first the beams of sunlight playing against an abandoned towel, frozen in the winter’s weather on the sidewalk. The same thing happens to us. We first notice the color of the light, then the geometry, and textures which call to us. It is then that we begin to wonder: wait, what is this and why is it there?
Whether she’s visually informing us about newsworthy goings on locally, or drawing our attention to the unusual she sees in everyday life, her photographs are worth a look. See more at her website and Instagram page.

Take a REST from STRESS
DDifferent events and situations cause stress for different people. Knowing what triggers your stress to kick in –mounds of office paperwork, important financial decisions, or hectic mornings, for example – can help you plan and prepare for stress-inducing moments.
Maintaining physical health can be beneficial for mental health, too. Find time to do exercises you enjoy like walking, jogging, yoga or playing a sport. Identifying activities that bring you joy can make it easier to fit 30-60-minute workouts into your schedule without adding even more stress.
Whether you find inner peace through journaling, breathing exercises, reading or some other form of slowing down, find what works for you and prioritize fitting it into your daily schedule. Relaxing activities help you slow down the pace of life, providing a chance to reset by doing something you enjoy.
A lack of quality sleep can add to stress. Put away electronics, which can interfere with your ability to calm your mind and find an activity that puts you at ease like reading a book or

Unlock the Benefits of Resistance Bands for Low-Impact Exercise
RResistance bands are highly versatile and effective low-impact exercise tools. They offer many benefits for people of all fitness levels, making them ideal for individuals looking to improve strength, flexibility, and overall physical health without putting undue stress on their joints.
Unlike traditional weights, resistance bands provide a safe and controlled workout experience. They offer a smooth and continuous tension throughout each movement, significantly reducing the risk of injury and strain on the muscles and joints. This safety feature makes them a perfect fit for individuals with joint pain or mobility issues and those on the path to recovery from injuries.
Additionally, resistance bands are perfect for targeting specific muscle groups and enhancing upper and lower body strength.
They can be easily incorporated into various exercises, including squats, lunges, chest presses, bicep curls, and more. The bands allow for a full range of motion and can be adjusted to provide the right resistance level for each individual. Their low-impact nature makes them suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, improving overall wellness and quality of life.
Furthermore, resistance bands are not just effective; they are also a convenient fitness solution. They are lightweight, portable, and inexpensive, making them a practical choice for home workouts or for anyone with a busy lifestyle. Their portability ensures that you can maintain your fitness routines even when traveling or unable to access a gym. Additionally, they can be used alone or in combination with other exercise equipment, offering a world of possibilities for customized workouts.
HEAT EXHAUSTION
As temperatures rise during the summer months, it’s crucial to stay vigilant about the potential risks of heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body overheats due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, leading to dehydration and a diminished ability to cool down. Recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion is essential for prompt intervention and prevention of more severe heat-related illnesses.
Recognizing the early signs of heat exhaustion is vital for preventing more serious heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke. Stay vigilant, listen to your body, and take immediate action if you or someone around you exhibits symptoms of heat exhaustion. By staying hydrated, seeking shade, and practicing appropriate self-care, you can enjoy the summer while keeping yourself safe and healthy.
Signs of Heat Exhaustion:
• Profuse sweating and pale, clammy skin.
• Fatigue, weakness, and dizziness.
• Headache and nausea.
• Muscle cramps and rapid heartbeat.
• Cool and moist skin despite the heat.
• Fainting or feeling lightheaded.
Actions to Take:
• Move to a cooler area and rest.
• Drink cool water or sports drinks.
• Loosen or remove tight clothing.
• Apply cool, wet cloths to the skin.
• Use a fan or seek airconditioned environments.
• Avoid excessive physical exertion.

Those Who Desire Nothing, POSSESS EVERYTHING
BY BARRY FARBER
WWhat does that saying really mean? It’s been a saying that I remember from my past experience in the martial arts and the research of martial arts masters.
Does that mean I don’t desire nice things? That I don’t want success? That I don’t reach out and grab opportunities or set goals?
“
“TAKE NO THOUGHT OF WHO IS RIGHT OR WRONG, OR WHO IS BETTER THAN. BE NOT FOR OR AGAINST.”
– BRUCE LEE
Not really. I still do. But when so many of the martial arts masters from the past talked about this “effortless effort” and “detachment” it intrigued me.
There is a fine line between the study of Zen and what we call achievement and success. To achieve something great you need to have a hunger, desire, tenacity and go after it with all your might. But that’s contradictory to what Zen emphasizes.
The dictionary definition of Zen: An approach to an activity, skill, or subject that emphasizes simplicity and intuition rather than conventional thinking or fixation on goals.
Does achievement without effort mean you don’t work hard? Not at all. It’s actually a detachment from the desire of caring too much about winning or caring too much about not winning. —And that’s where it gets difficult to put your arms around. It is
pure action with body and mind as one. Too much caring and desire for winning will get in the way of the performance.
There is a saying I have talked about in past columns, called Mushin, which means “no mind” or action without thinking. Yogi Berra said it best, “How can anybody hit and think at the same time.” Actions are pure and come naturally without thought. But the real key is detachment. Not to think and just do. Your body and mind are together and there are no thoughts disrupting the action. Because when you do not care you can be at ease.
One of my favorite books on this subject is “Zen in the Martial Arts,” by Joe Hyams. He tells a story about when he was training with his sensei who told him to hit a baseball mitt that was kept perfectly still. As soon as Joe got ready to punch he tensed up and his sensei was aware of his intention and he moved the mitt before Joe could strike it.
“Relax,” he said. “Stop straining. The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.” As soon as Joe relaxed his body and mind, he hit the target.
His sensei told him, “You stopped caring whether you hit the mitt or not. It is the caring or desire which stands in the way of effortless effort. You must stop caring about doing it and just do it—effortlessly and naturally as snow falls from the tree or water bubbles up from the spring.”
“WHEN YOU LEARN NOT TO WANT THINGS SO BADLY, LIFE COMES TO YOU.”
