Livingston Family Gives Back in Many Ways

Livingston resident, Hazel Nagda, 12, a Heritage middle school student, has been giving back since she was 8 years old. She has donated her hair to cancer charities three times, and even inspired her sister Faina, 9, a Collins Elementary school student and her mom, Dharmangi, to do so too. Hazel says, “If a few strands of my hair can make someone happy, I am happy to do it for as long as I can.”

Since Covid hit, Hazel has been doing free virtual storytelling for young kids all over the world. She reads and does story related arts and crafts projects, making the sessions more interactive, fun, and engaging for kids in a constructive manner.

In addition, during Covid, Hazel and Faina held a book drive from their residence. They circulated pamphlets in

their neighborhood, requesting books as donations and collected a substantial number of books, which then they donated to the Livingston Public Library.

Hazel learned about giving back from her mom who been donating 50% of her earnings from advertising and graphic design jobs to the SMT. Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind in Mumbai, India.

In 2021, Dharmangi held a Diwali artifacts exhibition where she handmade and painted portable rangolis, diyas, and wooden trays for gifting sweets during Diwali, and designed Diwali related photo props, which she says, “sold like hot cakes.” 50% of the proceeds went to the Kamla Mehta school.

This past summer, Dharmangi and her daughters flew to India and delivered gift

hampers, which included toiletries and food to the 160 girls at the school.

Dharmangi says, “We are glad we could do our bit in helping the girls and see smiles on their faces. The contentment cannot be expressed in words.”

She said her children “felt very humbled when they went to the school to donate the packets of necessities they created for the girls.”

“Giving back is very important,” Dharmangi says, “It is something I have tried to teach my girls from a very young age. I always want my daughters to remember the importance of showing kindness to others and lending a helping hand to people that are less fortunate. Their natural giving spirit can only be strengthened by giving of what they have, other than money and material things.”

The Junior Women’s Club of Verona Supports the Community

The Junior Women’s Club of Verona is a terrific asset to the community. The 60 members address the diverse needs of the communities by promoting education, preserving natural resources, encouraging healthy lifestyles, working on behalf of the elderly and people with disabilities, advocating for issues of concern to women, children, and families, and supporting participation in the arts.

The group was established in 1926 and is still going strong. In fact, in just the past year, the members worked with Verona’s local government, businesses, schools, and community members on over 20 successful initiatives including the following:

• During the group’s 8th annual Verona Fights Hunger Week, they collected 1,200 bags of food for the local food pantry and raised nearly $4,000 in monetary donations. All of the money went directly to fighting suburban poverty in the local area.

• Through their Packs With Purpose drive, they collected backpacks, filled with school supplies, which were distributed to local children in need.

• They awarded three $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors that live in Verona and will attend an accredited degreebased higher education program.

• The group’s last tricky tray raised over $30,000 that the Juniors re-invested in the community, which included making a $10,000 donation to the Verona Rescue Squad.

• Each year, they host a “Bunny Brunch” for children in town to meet the bunny—and even continued to spread joy throughout the pandemic by providing pre-filled Easter eggs to

families to celebrate. After learning of children in town battling cancer, they provided donations directly to the families.

• The Junior Women’s Club partners with the town and library each year to run the Fall-O-Ween festival.

• Their Holiday Wish Trees campaign allowed them to collect holiday gifts for Verona’s Adopt a Family program. Each year, they host the 4th and 5th grade Verona Spelling Bee.

• Last year, they organized the first ever “Taste of Verona,” bringing together local restaurants and allowing residents to sample cuisine and find their new favorite spot.

• The group also hosts dinner dances for seniors.

“I always look forward to hanging out with my fellow members each month,” says Amanda Mioli, co-president, who joined the group when she moved to town as a way to make friends who also enjoyed giving back in their free time.

Co-President Yvonne Nolan adds that while organizing and hosting fundraisers and community activities is a big part of membership, social events are a main component of the club. One of the main reasons many join is to participate in a variety of fun activities including brunches, make-your-own candle and pottery events, BBQs, and baseball games. She says that they like to support womenowned businesses and often hold their new member installations at them.

The Junior Women’s Club of Verona meets the second Wednesday of every month in the Community Center. To join or donate, go to: veronajuniors.org.

Great Ideas for Outdoor Entertaining Spaces

Do you dream of having a home that everyone loves to visit for outdoor parties and get-togethers? Here are loads of great ideas and exciting design options to help you create the perfect outdoor oasis, right in your own backyard!

Extend Your Home Outdoors

The new trend in home design is to expand your living space to the outdoors. Among the most popular outdoor improvements are an outdoor kitchen and dining area, outdoor bars and a structure to tie it all together. We also see distinctive homes installing pools with the ideal poolscape and fireplaces or firepits, all incorporated into one beautiful landscape.

Outdoor entertaining has come a long way. It now includes televisions, large screens, and music systems specially made for outdoor use. Imagine it’s a beautiful fall day and you want to watch a football game with your friends. Invite everyone to enjoy the game in your private, well stocked, viewing area—your backyard! …and adding audio to your landscape adds ambiance. It can mellow the mood or liven up a slow-starting party.

Pavilions & Pergolas

A pavilion or pergola can add interest, shade, comfort and define space in your backyard. A pergola is a landscaping feature that comprises vertical posts, crossbeams, and an open lattice. They are popular in landscaping to add shade, height, and visual interest.

A pavilion is an outdoor architectural space that lets people spend time outdoors without exposure to harsh weather elements. A pavilion by the pool

lets you escape summer sun. A pavilion dining area keeps partygoers dry and comfortable during a sudden summer shower.

The Outdoor Kitchen

Your outdoor kitchen can be large or compact. Built-in grills, sinks, dishwashers, refrigerators, and freezers are all available so you can fully prepare a complete meal and never miss a moment of your party fun. Attractive and functional granite countertops can complement outdoor cabinetry that stores dishes, glassware, food, and utensils.

Just about anything is possible. Is making pizza your thing? You’ll love an outdoor pizza oven! Outdoor pizza ovens are fully functional, beautiful, and dramatic. And they’re not just for pizza! Grill vegetables and meats too.

Pools & Poolscapes

Do swimmers in your family want to do laps every chance they get? Or do you want guests to experience that “just escaped to a faraway resort” feel? Consider adding a pool or poolscape in your backyard oasis.

Pools can be installed in all sizes and shapes. They can even include swim-up bars and waterfall grottos. Surrounding patios can incorporate concrete, pavers, or natural stone. The options are limitless.

Fireplaces & Firepits

On a chilly evening, what’s more inviting than an outdoor fireplace or dramatic firepit? Fireplaces and firepits extend the time guests want to stay in your backyard to enjoy the sweet summer evening or invigorating fall air.

Outdoor Dining Areas & Bars

Every outdoor entertainment area needs a comfortable dining area—or two. It extends your living and entertaining space. No more having to go inside to eat. And guests love to dine alfresco.

Sometimes two dining areas are helpful. During larger events, the smaller dining area can be a fun gathering spot for kids and teens. They’ll appreciate their own area as much as you will! Multi-tier patios can be a creative way to accommodate both areas and keep them separate and distinct.

For less formal dining, or to keep the cook company, include an outdoor bar in or near the kitchen. Guests can enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks at the bar before they sit down to an outdoor dinner.

A traditional fireplace adds warmth and comfort to your pavilion seating area where you chat or watch TV. An exciting firepit provides a fun gathering spot to toast marshmallows and tell spooky tales.

How to Get Started

Whether you have a half-acre or three plus acres for landscaping, you want an outdoor entertainment area that’s inviting, comfortable, and meets your needs. Start by finding a qualified landscape designer that can help develop a plan that works best given your property, budget, existing architecture, and entertainment needs. …and since landscaping can dramatically increase the market value of your home, your dream backyard will likely be a great investment too.

Watch It Bloom!

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your curb appeal or create a relaxing backyard retreat you can watch your landscape project come to life even before it’s even planted.

Steven Poto, owner of TeamSportsTurf Professional Lawn Care and Landscaping uses computer imaging to provide residential and commercial business owners with a precise description of the plantings they have chosen. He creates an accurate schematic of a completed project before the work begins. The plan allows the client to visualize the completed project.

“I take a picture of the site and prepare a full-color print of how it will look with new plantings”, explains Poto. He offers guidance on what will thrive based on the soil conditions and sun exposure. The plan can even show the homeowner how the project will look over time. Poto refers to the color print as a “work in progress” that allows the design to be tailored to his client’s needs and preferences.

With more than 30 years of experience, Poto takes pride in providing outstanding customer service with extensive landscape knowledge. TeamSportsTurf offers landscaping and hardscaping services and synthetic turf installation.

How to Clean Patio Furniture

Patio furniture is a great way to add style and comfort to your outdoor space, but regular cleaning is essential to keep your patio furniture looking its best, and it’s also a great way to extend the life of your pieces. Pelican Shops share tips for cleaning your patio furniture to make it shine.

Start by sweeping or brushing off any loose dirt or debris. This will make it easier to see which areas need the most attention. Use mild detergent and warm water to clean the furniture. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can damage the finish or fade the color. A solution of mild dish soap and warm water works well for most types of patio furniture.

Use a soft-bristled brush or a cloth to scrub the furniture. A toothbrush can also come in handy for reaching tight spaces or crevices. Rinse the furniture thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. Dry the furniture with a clean cloth or let it air dry in the sun.

If your patio furniture has cushions, remove them, and clean them separately. Most cushions can be spot cleaned with mild detergent and warm water. For metal furniture, you can use a

rust remover if you notice any rust stains. For wooden furniture, you can use a wood cleaner to help maintain its natural color and protect it from moisture and other elements. To protect your patio furniture from future damage, you can use a protective patio furniture cover or store it in a dry, covered area when not in use.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your patio furniture looking like new for many years to come. Remember to clean your patio furniture regularly, as dirt and grime can build up quickly and become harder to remove over time. And remember, if you are not sure about what cleaner to use, always check the manufacturer’s instructions first. Happy Cleaning!

The Benefits of Retaining Walls

Retaining walls help to hold soil in place, preventing erosion and the loss of valuable land. They can enhance the beauty of your property by creating a terraced garden or providing a backdrop for plants and flowers.

A retaining wall can level off a steep slope, creating a flat area that can be used for a patio, garden, or play area. In addition, retaining walls can prevent damage to property caused by soil erosion and landslides.

The purpose of the retaining wall will determine the design and materials needed for the retaining wall—whether it is for aesthetic purposes or to prevent soil erosion. The slope and soil conditions of the site will influence the design and construction of the retaining wall. The height and length of the wall will also depend on site conditions.

The choice of materials will affect the durability, aesthetics, and cost of the retaining wall. There are different types of materials available, such as concrete, stone, brick, and wood. Proper drainage is crucial to the performance and longevity of a retaining wall. Ensure that there is adequate drainage to prevent water buildup behind the wall.

Light Up the Night for Safety & Security

Outdoor security lighting can be an essential part of your home security system. It provides illumination that improves visibility, deters criminals and makes it easier for you to see any potential threats.

One of the most significant benefits of outdoor security lighting is that it discourages criminals from targeting your home. Criminals often prefer to work in the dark, where they can hide from view. By installing outdoor lighting, you can make it more challenging for them to approach your home unnoticed. Criminals are less likely to target a home that is well-lit.

Outdoor security lighting can improve safety and enhance visibility around your home. It makes it easier for you to see potential hazards, such as tripping hazards or uneven terrain, and can help prevent accidents, such as slips and falls. Additionally, it can make it easier for

emergency services to find your home if you ever need to call for help.

There are two types of security lighting, active and passive—lights that are on all the time or lights with motion detectors. Most homes use a combination of the two. For maximum home security, many homeowners are installing outdoor flood lights with cameras such as Ring or Nest Flood Light Cameras. These packages include a floodlight, camera and siren and can be controlled from your phone or smart speaker.

We can create a professional lighting plan for your property that provides night-time safety, protection and peace of mind.

A PERFECT Design

CLC LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Great designs begin with great ideas. At CLC Landscape Design, the start-to-finish landscaping projects are the arduous work of many talented workers. Rich Cording, the owner, a landscape architect, and his two sons, Rich Jr., a construction layout expert, and Eric, a sales professional, are the core employees. The company also employs lead landscape artists and contractors to bring the perfect designs to fruition. Here are three examples of dreams realized through landscape architecture.

Backyard Dream Pool

The owner of this property wanted to extend his comfort of living to the outdoors. With a beautiful pool as a focal point, the outdoor space contains numerous amenities to enhance pool time. There is a fireplace, a kitchen, a spa, and a slide. What a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors throughout most of the year!

Hampton Style Pool

This landscape design is simple elegance complementing a new house construction. The pool is the centerpiece, positioned between the house’s two balconies. There is also an outdoor kitchen and patio for full enjoyment by the family.

Greenwood Lake Pool

This project is a prime example of sustainable landscape design. The project has transformed liabilities into assets by working with a difficult, deeply sloping terrain covered with rocks. The existing stones on the property formed the stone walls and patio surrounding the beautiful pool. Various plants surround and stabilize the sloping cliff leading to the water. The changes complement the view of the breathtaking lake.

Experience the majesty of a beautiful landscape. Surround your home with exterior beauty designed and delivered by CLC Landscape.

Throughout the winter, dead grass and other debris accumulate on your lawn. This waste, known as thatch, can be quite a hindrance to your spring lawn. It promotes fungi, encourages pests and keeps new grass seed from sprouting. You can use a special dethatching rake or any rake with sturdy tines.

Before spreading grass seed, you’ll want to give the new roots room to spread and grow. Aerating the lawn helps make your soil more welcoming to new growth by allowing moisture, nutrients and air to sink deeper into the soil. Depending on the size of area you need to aerate, the two easiest options are doing it by hand or using an attachment on a riding mower.

The lawn isn’t the only place debris can pile up. Your flower beds and any other vegetation can become a holding ground for twigs, branches, leaves and other yard waste. Give your plants, shrubs and trees a close look to find broken, damaged or dead material and remove it to make way for new growth.

Even the healthiest lawns are susceptible to weeds, but getting a jump start on weeding early in the season can help you keep control. Be aware that many alternative products don’t distinguish between the vegetation you want (like grass) and weeds, so these remedies are best used along borders and within beds to discourage weed growth.

Seeding in the spring requires more work than the fall (especially if you tend to have hot, dry summers), but with enough nurturing and regular water, you can fill those spots in for a more uniform lawn.

Adding Curb Appeal with Landscape Design

Landscape design and installation is an essential aspect of enhancing the beauty of your property. A welldesigned landscape can significantly improve your property’s curb appeal, adding value and visual appeal to your home or business. K. Macken Landscape can help you achieve the desired look and feel for your property, creating a stunning outdoor space that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations.

One of the key benefits of landscape design and installation is the ability to transform an ordinary outdoor space into a beautiful and functional area. A wellplanned landscape can create an inviting entryway, a relaxing outdoor living space, or an attractive backdrop for entertaining guests. With the right design elements, such as walkways, patios, gardens, and outdoor lighting, your property can become a stunning oasis that reflects your

personal style and enhances your quality of life. In addition, proper landscape lighting can improve curb appeal, increase the value of your property, and deter crime.

“We love helping our clients visualize the final product, and then executing it,” states Kevin Macken. This statement highlights the importance of collaboration between client and landscaper in achieving the desired outcome. With a clear understanding of your goals and preferences, K. Macken can create a custom design that incorporates the right mix of plants, hardscapes, and other design elements to create a stunning and functional outdoor space.

A well-designed landscape can also provide numerous environmental benefits. A carefully selected mix of plants and trees can help reduce erosion, filter pollutants from the air and water, and

provide much-needed shade and cooling as well as attracting beneficial wildlife, such as birds and butterflies to create a more sustainable and eco-friendly outdoor space.

Deer Resistant Plants that Thrive

Essex County falls under USDA Hardiness Zone 6, which means that the region experiences cold winters and warm summers. For gardeners in this zone, it can be a challenge to find deer-resistant plants and flowers that can withstand the local climate. Fortunately, there are several options available that can add color and texture to any garden.

One of the best deer-resistant plants for Zone 6 is the butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii). This shrub produces fragrant flowers in shades of purple, pink, and white that attract butterflies but repel deer. It is easy to grow and can reach a height of up to 10 feet.

Another excellent choice is the ornamental grass, such as fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides) or zebra grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’). These grasses have a natural resistance to deer, and they can add height and texture to your garden. They are also low-maintenance and can thrive in a variety of soil conditions.

Siberian iris (Iris sibirica) is another beautiful and hardy deer-resistant plant that grows well in Zone 6. Its elegant blue, purple, or white flowers are a great addition to any garden, and they can bloom from late spring to early summer.

In addition, a few other deer-resistant plants that thrive in Zone 6 include lavender (Lavandula), yarrow (Achillea), salvia (Salvia), and coneflower (Echinacea). By selecting a variety of these plants, gardeners in can create a beautiful and low-maintenance garden that is resistant to deer damage.

Make Your Patio into an Outdoor Room

With a little creativity and some thoughtful planning, you can turn your patio into an outdoor room that you and your family will love spending time in. Here are some tips on how to make your patio an outdoor room.

Create Zones. Think of your patio as you would any room in your home and divide it into functional areas. For example, you might have a dining area, a lounging area, and a play area for kids. Use furniture and outdoor rugs to define these zones and add lighting to create a comfortable and intimate atmosphere.

Add Some Shade. If your patio gets a lot of sun, you’ll want to add some shade to make it more comfortable. A pergola or

umbrella can provide shelter, or you might consider installing outdoor curtains or shades for added privacy and protection.

Bring in Some Greenery. Plants are a great way to add life and color to your patio, and they can help to create a sense of enclosure and privacy. Consider adding potted plants, hanging baskets, or even a vertical garden to your space.

Incorporate Lighting. Just like indoors, lighting is key to creating the right mood in your outdoor room. Use a combination

of task lighting, such as table lamps or pendant lights, and ambient lighting, such as string lights or lanterns, to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Make it Relazed. Add outdoor pillows, blankets, and rugs to your seating areas, and consider incorporating a fire pit or outdoor fireplace for warmth and ambiance.

Get started today, and enjoy your new outdoor oasis!

Community Workers, Big Trucks and Ice Cream

Rainbow Child Care Center & Preschool of Roseland United Methodist Church hosted Community Workers Day on April 5. It was part of National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Week of the Young Child.

Parents, grandparents and friends volunteered their time to share their job descriptions in a brief, age-appropriate way and set up “touch and see” tables where the children could try out the tools of their trade. They also had vehicles lined up in their parking lot that the children could sit in and explore.

Louis Mauriello of Champion Waste Removal was one of the volunteers. He brought one of his trucks to the event and patiently helped each child climb in and out of the driver’s seat. He says, “There is nothing like a child’s first time sitting in a big truck and blowing the air horns… and then blowing them some more.”

This year’s career representatives included two physicians, a firefighter, financial

“I have two words for Long Covid—the worst,” shares Jason G. of Essex Fells, NJ. While the initial alarm of the Covid-19 outbreak has subsided, the pandemic is ongoing. The spread may have slowed but we continue to feel the long-term impacts. Nearly 23 million Americans (100 million people globally) have learned that regardless of the severity of their initial infection, they may continue to experience debilitating symptoms for weeks, months, or even years. In a number of cases, these symptoms worsen with time, even turning deadly.

“I got Covid early last year, and it was pretty bad,” shares Jason. “I was hospitalized for 9 days, and there was a point where I wasn’t sure I would make it. I’m still here, so I guess God had other plans but months passed, and I was still gasping for air. I couldn’t do everyday tasks like cutting the grass or working in the yard, much less enjoy a quick bike ride. And then there was what my doctor called ‘brain fog.’ I’d lose my train of thought mid-sentence or forget words for stupid things like plates and toilet paper. It felt like I’d had a stroke more than like it did a virus.”

Officially dubbed Long Covid, the aftermath of the original virus has taken on life of its own. Dozens of symptoms have been reported, including shortness of breath and cognitive issues to a sudden onset of diabetes, cardiac and cardiovascular issues.

These symptoms are so well-documented and common that those suffering now qualify for disability assistance. Unfortunately for Jason and so many others, the treatment options thus far have been limited.

“I started with my primary care doctor and saw specialist after specialist. A pulmonologist finally told me ‘this is the best we can do for you, it’s time you start thinking about how you’re going to live with Long Covid.’ Apparently, their best was letting me live what felt like half a life.”

Jason wasn’t satisfied with that and resigned himself to doing his own research, which is how he ended up here Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine “I fully believe the human body has the ability

to heal itself, but sometimes it needs a little push. I’ve used acupuncture in the past to help me through a bout of sciatica and just knew if anyone could help me with this Long Covid business, it was going to be acupuncturist, Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic DTCM L.Ac.”

You might think that a novel virus needs a novel solution, but you’d only be half right.

While we are using innovative solutions like ATP Bioresonance Therapy® to combat Long Covid because it aids in the healing and repair of specific cells and tissues, it’s a much more time-tested science that’s getting our patients back to living their lives.

Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine is the premier provider of ozone therapy in the state.

“Our 03 Renewing Therapy® has all-encompassing and powerful healing capabilities,” shares Dr. Aleksandra. “Ozone therapy has been used since the 1800s and was actually a popular tool for doctors during the first world war because of its antibacterial. antiviral and antiinflammatory properties. We use it

today to deactivate residual Covid virus, stimulate oxygen metabolism and activate the immune system. And the whole treatment takes about 15 minutes and is completely noninvasive.”

As with our other services, 03 Renewing Therapy® requires consistent and repeated treatment to achieve measurable and long-lasting results.

“I’m in my second month of treatment and back to riding my bike and maybe: breathing better than before I even had Covid. Everyone has been amazing! I feel cared for every time I walk in the door of the Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine office.”

Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic DTCM L.Ac. has successfully treated chronic pain and complicated conditions for over a decade. When Covid-19 emerged three years ago, we researched and developed therapies to address the complex virus effectively. Based on the testimony of patients like Jason, our efforts are a smashing success.

TIMELESS TREASURES

Originally intending to be a lawyer, once Branden discovered the incredible satisfaction he received from assisting people with choosing and/or designing a favorite piece of jewelry, he never looked back. “I think it was two weeks into working here when this man came in and wanted a custom-made necklace,” he says. “He asked me for ideas, and I gave him what I thought were great ones. He ended up ordering one for his entire family - that was a rockstar moment.”

Jewelry is not only beautiful, but it often evokes distinctive memories since it’s a popular gift for many momentous occasions. “The big ones are anniversaries, milestone birthdays, and Mother’s Day, but we also have a lot of really unique gifts for graduations and religious celebrations,” says Branden.

continued from the previous page

Even years later, the recipients are brought back to that joyful moment when their parents, grandparents, or significant others presented them with a commemorative piece of artistry. “For thousands of years, every culture around the world has worn jewelry and has assigned something special to it, whether it’s energy or some sort of symbol for achievements or accomplishments,” he says. “There’s always something imbued into jewelry.”

To this day, people still love to wear it and gift it. “With all the chaos that we’ve had to deal with in the last few years, to be able to look down on your wrist and know that your grandma gave you something 30 years ago that still makes you smile is just really cool,” says Branden.

He also believes the experience of choosing a piece should be unforgettable. “Bringing your wife to a nice jewelry store and designing something for her is really special, and that piece will forever capture that moment.”

Branden, along with his mother and uncle, Alex Fleysher, especially loves designing one-of-a-kind artistic pieces. “Combined, we have over a hundred years of experience. Our jewelry team has been with us for almost 30 years, and we make everything in house. The end product is unique to the person that purchases it and gets to wear it, which is so special.”

Some customers bring in family heirloom pieces or other jewelry that doesn’t match their current style to have it refashioned into a design they’re happy to wear. Yanina & Co. uses a remarkable 3D drawing program which allows customers to visualize the final product before it’s made.

“Jewelry is something beautiful that you can bring everywhere,” says Branden. “You never have to leave it at the door. Being able to come into this industry and really run it the same way my mom did and have her be able to relax a little bit is my biggest achievement.”

Tips to Enhance Your Wedding Decor

Wedding days are meant to be filled with love and celebration, and what better way to ring in the new stage of life as newlyweds than with a well-decorated venue to match the joyous occasion. Whether a couple is on a tight budget or picky when it comes to theme ideas, these decorating tips can help add more flair for the big day.

Use a Natural Venue.

Many couples choose wedding venues that require immense amounts of decorations, but a venue with organic scenery or a beautiful view can help alleviate the stress. Consider having the ceremony near a garden or beach with enough natural surroundings to keep guests in awe.

Make the Cake a Centerpiece.

Wedding cakes are almost guaranteed to be filled with flavor, but they can also serve as a decorative centerpiece for

the reception. Choosing a cake topped with flowers, highlighting bright colors and placing it in a prominent spot at the reception can grab guests’ attention while also keeping them eager for a bite.

Choose Table Accessories that Pop!

Leave guests in amazement as they make their way to their seats for the reception with beautifully decorated tables. Table accessories can be anything ranging from patterned table runners to flowers in fullbloom placed in simple, elegant vases. If you are not having a formal sit-down reception, try using paper lanterns or hanging flowers from the ceiling to create an eye-catching atmosphere to remember.

Add Classic Lighting.

At times, finding the right lighting to match the mood of a wedding venue can be tricky. In this case, less may actually be more. Try opting for a classic

candlelit ceremony or reception to create a more romantic setting. This can save both money and countless hours spent attempting to configure elaborate light fixtures, and also provide a timeless feel.

Place Engagement Photos Around the Venue.

With any wedding, you want the day to feel personal and intimate for the couple and guests alike. Consider decorating the venue with engagement photos of the soon-to-be spouses as they popped the question. This can allow the newlyweds to reminisce while guests view those cherished moments and revel in the occasion.

Bridal Preparation Tips

Choose the perfect stylist to work with you on your wedding day. Be sure to schedule hair and makeup appointments for the wedding day 6 months in advance, as well as scheduling your trials.

• Trials should be 2-3 months before the day of the wedding.

• Prepare your skin for perfection on your wedding day! Set up a regimen of Hydrafacials, back facials, and body scrubs. According to theknot.com, “a regular facial regimen will leave your skin positively radiant.”

• Now is the time to get those eyebrows in shape for the big day. Meet with our talented waxing and makeup team to discuss creating your perfect brow and maintaining them through your wedding date.

• Begin a regimen of manicures (weekly) and pedicures (monthly).

Four Weeks Before

Schedule your last Hydrafacial and back facial before the wedding day (3-4 weeks prior)

• If you color, perm, or relax your hair, get your last treatment 4 weeks before the wedding day. This is also the perfect time to get a trim to clean up and eliminate split ends before your wedding day.

• Book yourself a day of relaxation, you deserve it. Indulge in Dieci massages, such as the Signature Massage, Warm Stone Massage, or a Deep Tissue Massage.

• You can also book a body treatment, and then have a session in the Infrared Sauna.

One Week Before

Schedule your last brow sculpting appointment and any waxing for smooth and care-free skin a week before the date.

• Ease your mind with a relaxing CBD or Magnesium Therapeutic massage and then relax in our Himalayan Salt Lounge.

The Day Before

• Prepare your nails and toes with a spa manicure and spa pedicure in the private pedicure spa room with your groom or maid of honor.

• Have your hair blown-out for your rehearsal dinner and to prepare it for your updo the following day.

Creating Bridal Trousseaus at Sitting Pretty Intimates

Christine Dutcher, the owner of Sitting Pretty Intimates in Livingston, enjoys creating trousseaus for brides. “It is truly wonderful to assist a bride because it is one of the happiest times of a woman’s life,” said Christine.

Brides create bridal trousseaus to take on their honeymoons and foundations that signify the beginning of their new life journey, according to Christine.

To build a trousseau, which often includes peignoir sets, consist of a white gown and matching robe to wear on one’s wedding night; sexy lingerie; comfortable pajamas; bathing suits; coverups; panties; bras; and more. Very often, the bride’s or groom’s mother, a sister, a maid of honor, or someone significant to the bride usually assists with the choices. They help the bride make perfect choices to look and feel her best. “We welcome all that want to be part of the process,” says Christine.

SOCIAL STUDIES An Artist Looks at Social Events

Millburn resident Bart Gorin is exhibiting a series of photographs made at social events over a couple of decades which document the changes in how we gather to celebrate.

Gorin didn’t start out to be an event photographer. Growing up in Brooklyn and interested in Art, he attended the Pratt Institute where he majored in Sculpture and Art Education. Graduating in 1976, an interest in photography led him to a career as an advertising photographer in NYC in which he was responsible for creating the photographs used to illustrate many national ads seen in popular magazines.

It was in 2001 when a co-worker of his wife asked him to photograph her wedding that he dipped his toe into the world of event photography. One thing led to another, and quickly his schedule was full documenting all kinds of social events: weddings, bar mitzvahs, and corporate parties. After over 20 years of covering social events of all kinds, Gorin, stuck by the continuous cultural shifts in traditions, rituals, and even mores, has gathered a selection of photographs that document these changes in an exhibition at Studio Montclair.

In Drag Queen 2004, the musical entertainment photographed at a corporate holiday party transcends the traditional disk jockey or combo of musicians. A drag queen miming along to popular songs entrances the partiers. Gorin points out that while the wedding tradition of throwing both the bouquet and garter belt is rarely seen at contemporary weddings these days, here in Garter Belt 2022, he sees it reappear, and the placing of the garter reveals a party guest with multiple tattoos.

In Wedding Selfie 2022, as phone cameras get better and better, selfies, which didn’t exist prior to cell phones becoming common, happen even in the middle of a wedding ceremony as the celebrant stops the wedding service to grab one with the couple he’s about to pronounce husband and wife. In this exhibit, Gorin has shown us that while we will probably always gather to celebrate, the more things stay the same: the more they are different.

See more of Gorin’s intriguing work in an exhibit at Studio Montclair opening April 21 running through May 26, or on his website.

Build Lasting Healthy Habits

Starting on a path toward healthy habits is often easier than maintaining them long term. This year, you can avoid a major pitfall of healthy resolutions and build healthy habits that stick by working small, positive steps into your daily life. In fact, healthy habits are the first suggested treatment strategy for people whose blood pressure and cholesterol levels are creeping higher than normal, according to an American Heart Association scientific statement.

“The current guidelines for managing high blood pressure and cholesterol recognize that otherwise healthy individuals with mildly or moderately elevated levels of these cardiovascular risk factors should actively attempt to reduce these risks, and increasing physical activity is a great place to start,” said Bethany Barone Gibbs, Ph.D., chair of the statement writing group and chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at West Virginia University School of Public Health. These six ideas from the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good Habit Coach can help.

Bust Common Habit-Building Myths

You may be surprised to learn the truth about creating and sticking to healthy habits. One myth is getting healthy means doing things you don’t like. Research shows positive emotions make habits stick, so set your intentions on something you enjoy. Another misconception is big results require big changes, which may lead to overly ambitious habits. However, the simpler the routine is, the more likely it is to become habit.

Work with Your “Brain Loops”

Your brain creates “loops” for habits made up of three things: a cue, a routine and a reward. Each time the loop is repeated, it becomes more routine and may become automatic. Knowing this, you can design cues for developing new, healthy habits, such as setting walking shoes by the bed to start a walking habit. The routine is putting on the shoes and walking around the block, and the reward is the pleasant sensations and brighter mood from a morning stroll.

Create Cues That Work for You

Most successful health habits begin with a cue. The cue can be external in your environment or internal in terms of your mindset. The more consistent the cue, the more likely it is to trigger the habit. Hacking your brain’s reminder system can help you remember your cue. Some examples of visual cues are placing a sticky note where you’ll see it often, keeping a water bottle on your desk or refrigerating fresh veggies at eye level.

A Routine That Supports Your Goals

Positive and consistent habits are important to achieve your personal goals. Small habits done consistently can add up to big results. To create a new healthy habit, think through the steps that could lead to your desired outcome. Ask yourself whether you want to do it, if it’s easy and if it’s high impact. It’s important to choose habits that make a difference and move you closer to your goals.

For example, if one of your goals is improving your heart health, a meaningful habit might be to move more. Increasing physical activity can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol along with many other health benefits, Gibbs said.

“Every little bit of activity is better than none,” she said. “Even small initial increases of 5-10 minutes a day can yield health benefits.”

Use Rewards to Make Habits Stick

Start by choosing a habit you enjoy that’s rewarding by itself. If you’re more of a

dancer than runner, increase your physical activity with an upbeat dance class. You might also look for a more enjoyable version of a new habit, such as getting more fruits and veggies by sipping on a delicious smoothie.

Resets are Part of the Process

New habits are experiments. If they don’t stick, you haven’t failed. Instead, you’ve learned what doesn’t work, which is useful. Get curious and ask yourself which part of the habit didn’t work for you.

Maybe the cue was ineffective. Maybe the steps of the routine were too ambitious and you need to split them into smaller, easier steps. If you realize you don’t enjoy the habit, stop doing it and try something else.

Establishing a Healthy Lifestyle Through Weight Loss

As owners of Montclair Rejuvenation Center with locations in Montclair and Verona, Ed Fritz and his wife, Kelly DiStefano, MD, fulfill their dream of providing quality and affordable aesthetic services to area residents. Their newest service, weight loss injectables, began last month. Ed discusses this new and exciting weight loss treatment below:

What is the latest in the fight against weight loss?

The latest weight-loss drug is semaglutide, an anti-compound used to treat type 2 Diabetes. This medication acts like a hormone to regulate blood sugar but also curbs people’s appetites by slowing down the gastric process. Clients feel full more quickly and therefore eat less. Dr. Kelly injects this drug and establishes a treatment plan after carefully evaluating each patient. A physical exam and bloodwork determine whether a patient is eligible for the program.

What happens next if the patient enters the program?

If the patient is eligible, they receive a weekly injection of semaglutide tailored to their physiology and goals. Dr. Kelly also sets up a lifestyle plan for the client incorporating exercise and a healthy diet. Side effects of the drug are usually minor and normally pass within a day of the injection.

Results vary among patients, but most clients lose two to three pounds the first week and up to six pounds after the second week. A patient’s weight loss success also depends on following the lifestyle changes that we recommend.

Do people keep the weight off after they reach their goal?

We aim to teach patients how to adopt a healthy lifestyle. We monitor their progress and have weekly consultations with them. If we can reset good habits, patients will retain these habits and be successful in long-term weight loss.

Do you have personal experience with the program?

Yes! I am down 35lbs since the beginning of December 2022.

What to Look for in

SWIMMING CLASSES for Children

Learning to swim not only provides kids the opportunity to enjoy lots of water-filled fun. It’s essential to their safety. It also helps kids build strength and endurance, is an excellent form of exercise, and builds kids’ confidence.

Claire McCarthy, MD, in “Swimming lessons: 10 things parents should know,” at Harvard Health Publishing, says to look for swim instructors trained and evaluated under the guidelines of a reputable agency such as the YMCA or Red Cross.

Make sure the instructor is child centered. Teaching kids to swim is different from teaching adults. It requires patience, understanding, and positive reinforcement.

Getting into a cold pool isn’t a pleasant experience at any age. It also makes it harder to focus on learning and get comfortable in the water. Make sure the pool is heated to at least 84°F for children over 6. If under 3, the temperature should be at least 87°F.

Complimentary nitrous oxide is provided for your comfort & relaxation

Find out the class size and ratio of students to instructors. If you won’t be in the pool with your child, ask about lifeguards, especially if it’s a larger class. Also, do instructors get in the pool with the kids, or do they instruct from the deck?

Here are some excellent guidelines for student-teacher ratios based on the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program: Children up to 4-years-old and attended in the pool by their parent, 12:1 ratio; ages 3-5, with a buoyancy device, 6:1; and kids 6 and up, 8:1; for advanced classes, 10:1.

Ask if the pool chlorine and PH levels are tested regularly. Low PH causes eye irritation. Low chlorine levels can be a health risk. If you’re in doubt, pick up a test kit at a hardware store.

Make sure parents are allowed some ability to observe if they choose. It can be through a window or at the start or end of classes. When parents can attend the entire class, having additional eyes on the kids adds an extra layer of safety. The problem, though, is it sometimes reduces kids’ cooperation. So, decide what you’re comfortable with and what’s best for your child.

Foods for Allergy Relief

When you suffer from allergies, your body launches an immune response against and irritant—pollen, grass, mold—triggering itchy, watery eyes, congestion, a runny nose, and general misery. There are certain foods that may help with allergy relief. These foods contain nutrients that can help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system, which may alleviate allergy symptoms.

Vitamin C

Foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwis, and red peppers, can help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.

Omega-3s

Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, walnuts, and flaxseed, can help reduce inflammation and improve lung function, which may alleviate allergy symptoms.

Quercetin

Quercetin-rich foods, such as apples, onions, and berries, have antihistamine properties that can help reduce allergy symptoms.

Probiotics

Probiotic-rich foods, such as yogurt, kefir, and kimchi, can help improve gut health, which is linked to a healthy immune system and reduced allergy symptoms.

It’s important to note that while these foods may help alleviate allergy symptoms, they are not a replacement for medical treatment. If you have severe or persistent allergy symptoms, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional.

The Caldwell Classic 5K

This year the Caldwell Classic 5K Run/Walk will be held in honor of founding members Theresa DiMasi and Marie LanFrank, whose legacies and vision of helping every student succeed in the Caldwell West Caldwell (CWC) district is still very much at the heart of The Foundation’s mission today. This years’ premier sponsors are Iron Physical Therapy and Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex.

This year’s event will have children’s activities including a fun run for children up to age 6, a DJ, and sponsor giveaways before the actual main race. Children participating in the fun run will take a loop around the circular driveway at JCHS. The 5k will take runners up Westville Avenue and into Grover Cleveland Park where after taking a loop around the pond runners will return to JCHS.

“The Education Foundation’s 5K is truly a win-win event. It brings the entire community together for a fun, healthy activity while raising valuable funds for the Education Foundation”, commented CWCEF Foundation Chairperson Mary Ann Campion. 100% of profits generated from the CWCEF 5K target programs benefitting all children in the Caldwell West Caldwell school district.

Out of the Box AND Unconventional

Vision and belief are the foundation to help guide you through “out-of-the-box” thinking and unconventional action. I’ve always been fascinated with new and unique approaches to business, product inventions, martial arts training, artwork and more. When approaching situations different from the norm you seem to get a lot of no’s, rejection and setbacks.

A flat folding pen? “It’s a novelty item, won’t work.”

A biography of a world champion skateboarder? “Skateboarders don’t read”.

How about a $7 million wooden roller coaster named Evel Knievel? “You’re nuts”.

I’ve heard them all.

Anything that challenges the norm and looks at a new way to create gets me excited. The KEY is defining the steps to execute the plan and having a crystal-clear vision of the final product in your mind.

Recently I was made aware of a company that invented and manufactured a sword that cuts through wood called the “Viking Wood Splitting Sword”. It’s 4 feet long and 11 pounds with a double edge razor sharp blade. The reason it got my attention is that for many years I’ve loved training with a variety of martial arts weapons and have always had a passion for chopping wood.

So, I was thinking…what if I could use the Viking sword to start carving a 5-foot wooden statue of a wolf from an oak stump? That would be something a little different since carving animals out of wood and stone has been a hobby of mine. In one of my rock sculptures, I actually used only a hammer and screwdriver.

So, I started thinking of all the benefits of carving with the sword verses using a chainsaw. (Chainsaws are the norm for carving large wooden animals).

First, it’s an amazing full body workout. I get my workout and create a sculpture at the same time. Second, it allows you to understand the uniqueness of the grain and how the wood breaks off. And third, it’s a boatload of fun!

Currently, I’m in the process of carving all the animals in my children’s story…In Search Of The Magic Tree. The 3rd character is Sheba the Wolf. The way I go about it is to visualize the next animal in the middle of the current carving. For weeks I will look at pictures of wolves until I see the one that works and study every feature in great detail. I will buy a miniature model of a wolf and study it from every angle. The more I study and think about the image of the final wolf the easier it is to cut away what isn’t. When you have the end result crystal clear in your mind it gives you the resilience to continue regardless of any mistakes, setbacks and difficulties. This idea helps with all types of projects.

The preparation and visualization of the final product builds the confidence to begin. It’s time to begin.
