With six performances scheduled over two weekends, October 18-20 and 25-27, this showcase highlights playwright Eric’s talent for both drama and comedy.

West Orange High School Student Wins Podcast Contest with Powerful Story on Identity
Kayla Burrowes, now an 11th grader at West Orange High School, recently won a podcast contest hosted by The New York Times. Her submission, a five-minute episode titled Identity Fraud: Who Are You?, delves into the emotional challenges of discovering personal identity during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in sixth grade. Kayla’s inspiration came from a 10th-grade journalism class project that her teacher, Christina Biddle, encouraged students to submit. The contest featured 11 winners, and Kayla’s success was a proud moment for her family, especially her mom, Bridgette, who shared how difficult the previous year had been due to Kayla’s health struggles. Kayla, who loves creative writing, plans to pursue a career in the medical field but found joy in creating her first-ever podcast. Her teriffic podcast can be found on SoundCloud. You can learn more about Kayla and the other winners, and listen to their podcasts, here: https://nyti.ms/4goJG7l.

Tunes for All: Music for Kids and the Young at Heart
Montclair-based music duo “Red Canoe” (Nikki Gregoroff and Claire Cushman) has released a children’s album that goes beyond traditional kids’ music. In 2021, Claire’s daughter was diagnosed with a rare neurodevelopmental disorder (STXBP1related disorder). Nikki, a professional singer and songwriter, was inspired to create an album with Claire, a visual artist and occasional musician. In part, the goal was to bring joy to a dark time, but also to promote inclusivity and celebrate all humans, regardless of their differences. The album, “Under the Stars,” is for children and “the young at heart.” It blends joyful, inclusive messages with soothing, upbeat melodies, all while celebrating the beauty of nature. Recorded with the help of local New Jersey musicians, the album is available on all streaming platforms. A portion of proceeds will support research for STXBP1 in the future. For more information and to view some of Claire’s artwork, visit: redcanoesong.com.
Livingston Book Club Hits the Big Time
It’s not every day that your book club gets a moment in the spotlight, but for Amy Esrelew of Livingston and her friends, that’s exactly what happened when they appeared on a “Read with Jenna” June Book Club Pick segment of the Today Show this summer. The book club, cheekily named “Read Between the Wines,” has been a monthly tradition for five years.
Amy noted, “It was such a fun and unique experience. We got to discuss ‘Swift River,’ a debut coming-of-age novel picked by Jenna Bush Hager, with the author Essie Chambers, Jenna, and Hoda.”
The club members, who usually rotate homes and book selections, were thrilled to be part of the live segment. Randi Wolfson, Alison Halper, and Mindy Scheier, all from Livingston, represented the group by asking the author their pre-prepared questions.
“Read Between the Wines” has grown into a close-knit group, all brought together by their shared love of reading.

Family-owned and operated, Bloomfield Cooling began in Bloomfield, expanded to Nutley, and later moved to Little Falls in 2005, becoming a trusted name in providing superior service to North Jersey residents since 1989.
The company has earned numerous accolades, including nine consecutive Best of Essex awards, Angie’s List recognition for superior service, and the prestigious Carrier President’s Award. As an authorized Carrier dealer, they provide top-tier equipment and expert installation.
Over the years, Bloomfield Cooling has added services and products to improve customers’ indoor air comfort and safety. These include home standby generator installation and maintenance, in-duct air purification devices, ductless heating and cooling systems, and whole-house humidifiers. The company’s licensed electricians provide full electrical services for homes and businesses.
Les Epstein, a Verona resident, has transformed his passion for the performing arts into “Reflections from the Audience,” a memoir capturing over 4,000 performances spanning opera, theater, and concerts. During his time as a practicing attorney in New York, Leslie spent his free time attending and writing about each live performance he saw. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he compiled decades of reflections into this debut book.
The book features stories of iconic performances and includes links to recordings of many shows, allowing readers to experience the magic firsthand. Highlights include Richard Burton’s “Hamlet,” Jason Robards in “The Iceman Cometh,” and Broadway musicals like “Company,” as well as performances by such diverse musical icons as Ethel Merman, Maria Callas, Leonard Bernstein, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Janis Joplin, and more.
“Reflections from the Audience” is a love letter to the performing arts, offering a unique, interactive journey through decades of unforgettable performances.
Les hopes to connect with readers through book clubs and events. His book is available in print and Kindle editions on Amazon and other internet booksellers.

ONE MOTHER’S DANCE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTHOOD
OFFERS A LIFELINE TO OTHERS
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
AAs parents, few experiences are as challenging and rewarding as raising children with disabilities. West Orange’s Joanne De Simone, a former professional modern dancer and special education teacher turned author, offers a unique perspective on this journey in her upcoming book, “Fall and Recovery: Raising Children with Disabilities through Lessons Learned in Dance.” Scheduled for release on September 17, the book delves into Joanne’s journey raising two children with diverse and demanding disabilities, weaving in her background as a dancer to provide insights and guidance to use her lessons learned to help others.
Joanne’s narrative is deeply rooted in her professional training and experiences with the Jose Limón Dance Company. The structure of her book is ingeniously modeled after Limón’s “There Is a Time,” a dance piece based on Ecclesiastes 3, “To everything there is a season.” Each chapter aligns with a dance lesson and a dichotomy of special needs parenting.
This creative approach highlights the practical aspects of managing daily life and emphasizes the emotional and psychological resilience required.
Despite her background in special education, Joanne found that her formal training fell short in preparing her for the emotional complexities of parenting children with disabilities. “As a special education teacher before having children, I assumed I would be able to lean on my knowledge, but I found that it fell short because no one teaches you in a classroom how to deal with the emotional side of parenting a child with disabilities,” Joanne explains. “My professional training did not fully prepare me for the challenges of raising two children with disabilities.” Instead, the life skills she acquired through dance became her most valuable tools: how to live in the moment, use every fall to generate positive momentum, and accept the simultaneous existence of love and grief. Her book aims to share these insights, providing a lifeline to other parents navigating similar waters.
Through “Fall and Recovery,” Joanne hopes to help other parents, educators, and healthcare professionals by offering them a resource that speaks to the often unspoken struggles and triumphs of parenting children with disabilities. Her goal is to foster a sense of community and understanding, reducing the isolation and shame that many parents feel.
Her journey as a mother and a dancer is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of finding balance amidst the chaos.
Joanne will launch her book in the fall at local author events and make it available wherever books are sold.
ANNIE’S ARMY
A Mother’s Mission to Honor Her Daughter’s Legacy and Save
Lives
IIn the face of unimaginable loss, Jodi Eisner and her family living in Livingston have found a way to keep her daughter Annie’s spirit alive and continue her legacy of helping others. The Annietober 365 Foundation, named after her daughter, embodies Annie’s joyful mantra— celebrate every day like it’s your birthday. Tragically, Annie passed away from acute myeloid leukemia in August 2023 at just 20 years old after a 3.5-year battle, but her love for life continues to inspire.
The foundation’s mission is threefold: to encourage people to live each day fully, raise funds for cancer research to help more people celebrate their birthdays, and facilitate life-saving bone marrow and stem cell transplants for those in need. “Annie had two transplants,” Jodi shares, “and we know firsthand how critical donors are.” Her first transplant came from her older sister, Lainie, and her second from an anonymous donor. Seeing so many others struggle to find matches
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
inspired the family to help facilitate bone marrow donor registrations through “Annie’s Army.”
Since its launch, Annie’s Army has organized bone marrow swab drives on college campuses and beyond, adding 2670 new potential donors to the registry and identifying 11 matches. “This work is about giving families hope,” Jodi says.
One of the foundation’s key events is “Annietober,” a month-long celebration in October, Annie’s birthday month. Local businesses, including Mixology, Chari Amster & Sitting Pretty Intimates, Infinity, and The Twisted Tulip, are donating a portion of their proceeds to the foundation in October. The Twisted Tulip is even offering a unique “Annie Pink Drink” throughout the month.
Jodi and her family are committed to continuing the work Annie started at Syracuse University, where she studied Public Relations and served as a Gift of
Life ambassador. Swab drives held by her sorority sisters and friends across the country have continued in Annie’s memory, helping spread her story and passion for saving lives.
Although the foundation has only recently received its official 501(c)(3) status, Jodi and her family have been fundraising for cancer research and organizing donor drives for years. “We spent the first 365 days after Annie’s passing figuring out what to do,” Jodie explains. “Now we’re looking ahead to the next 365 and beyond.”
Annie may be gone, but her vibrant personality, love for life, and compassion live on through the foundation. With every swab drive and fundraiser, the Annietober 365 Foundation continues to make a difference, ensuring that Annie’s legacy will save lives for years to come.

Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch
Offers Unique Foster to Adopt Model
Meet One of the Best of Essex Contest Benefactors
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
WWhen Susan Janett co-founded Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch (RRR) in Verona in 2017 with her partner Rosemarie Cafiero, who rescued over 7,000 dogs before passing away, she never envisioned its rapid growth. Now, RRR boasts over 50 volunteers rescuing dogs from kill shelters.
“Rosemarie’s Rescue offers a breakthrough in the adoption process,” says Janett. Dogs are fostered for two weeks with preapproved families who get the first option to adopt. “This period allows families to see if the dog is a good fit, rather than just a quick meet and greet,” she explains. Each foster family is paired with a liaison for support.
The program boasts a 98% success rate, with most fosters choosing to adopt. If a family decides not to adopt, Janett helps them find a suitable forever family. RRR ensures all dogs
are cared for, promising to take any dog back if needed. Finding a new foster placement can take as little as 24-48 hours.
All foster applications are reviewed by Janett, ensuring dogs are temperament-tested and compatible with their foster families. Each dog receives necessary veterinary care and supplies to ease the transition.
Donations are crucial to RRR’s operations. The Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch Resale Shop on Bloomfield Avenue funds the rescue, with profits going directly to the animals. Monetary donations, volunteer time, and supplies are always needed.
By volunteering or donating, you can make a difference. As Janett shares, “I can’t save the world, but I can save one life at a time, and that’s enough.” Interested in fostering or learning more?

Nurture Growth and Passion
Enrichment classes for both adults and children play a crucial role in personal and professional development. These classes offer many benefits that contribute to overall well-being and growth. Enrichment classes allow children to explore their interests outside of the traditional school curriculum. Whether art, music, dance, or science, these classes allow children to discover

their passions and develop new skills in a supportive and creative environment. Additionally, enrichment classes can help children build confidence, improve social skills, and foster a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
Similarly, adults can greatly benefit from enrichment classes as well. Whether it’s learning a new language, honing culinary skills, or delving into a new hobby, these classes offer adults the opportunity to expand their knowledge and explore new interests. More than that, enrichment classes for adults also provide a valuable break from the routine of daily life, allowing individuals to pursue personal growth and selfimprovement, inspiring them to reach new heights in their personal and professional lives.
Moreover, both children and adults can benefit from the social aspect of enrichment classes. These classes provide a platform for individuals to meet likeminded people, form new friendships, and engage in meaningful interactions that contribute to personal development and a sense of community. Whether it’s nurturing a child’s curiosity or allowing an adult to pursue lifelong passions, enrichment classes play a vital role in shaping individuals and enriching their lives.
Protecting Children in the Digital Age
CChildren today grow up surrounded by technology and the internet. While these tools offer great learning opportunities and connections, they also have potential risks. Parents, educators, and caregivers need to take proactive steps to protect children in the digital world, providing them with a sense of security in their online experiences.
The first step is to have open and ongoing conversations about internet safety. Parents and caregivers should talk to children about the potential dangers they may encounter online, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and online predators. By keeping an open dialogue, children are more likely to feel comfortable coming to adults with any concerns about their online experiences.
Setting clear guidelines and boundaries for internet use is also crucial. This can include establishing rules around screen time, specifying which websites and apps are offlimits, and monitoring children’s online activities. By doing so, parents and caregivers can feel more in control of their children’s online safety.
Educating children about the importance of privacy and responsible online behavior is crucial. Children should understand the significance of keeping personal information private, being cautious when interacting with strangers online, and thinking critically about the content they encounter. Teaching children to be good digital citizens will help them make safer and more informed choices when using the internet.
It’s also essential to stay informed about the latest online trends and risks. Technology and online platforms constantly evolve, so adults must stay updated with current digital trends and potential threats.

Rejuvenate Your Body & Mind
LUXURY SERVICES WITHOUT THE LUXURY PRICE TAG
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
FFounded over eight years ago by husband and wife Ed Fritz and Dr. Kelly DiStefano, Montclair Rejuvenation Center in Verona and West Caldwell offers access to luxury medical spa services without the luxury price.
“Our mantra is to bring affordable aesthetics to the whole community,” says Ed. “That was our goal right from the beginning. Due to our size, we can get products at a bigger discount because we’re buying much more volume.”
Clients appreciate this philosophy, which has led to the business’s expansion. “In August, we opened our third location in West Palm Beach, Florida, called the Wellington Rejuvenation Center,” he says.

“Everyone loves dermaplaning because it makes skin glow and improves product penetration…”
—VICTORIA ROBINS, LEAD FACIALIST
Rejuvenate Your Body & Mind
(continued from the previous page)
While other new and exciting things are in the works, one thing that has stayed the same is the popularity of its facials. “Everyone loves dermaplaning because it makes skin glow and improves product penetration,” says lead facialist Victoria Robins. Cryo T-Shock, which subtly enhances your jawline and your cheekbones, is another popular request. I always take before-and-after photos, and the results are amazing.”
When the weather starts to cool down, she says clients especially like THE PERFECT DERMA™ peel, which helps shed summer skin and gets their skin ready for fall. Others include the HydraFacial MD® to really clean out pores and the Photo Facial to reduce brown spots, redness, and other skin imperfections.
With so many treatments to choose from, how do clients figure out what’s right for them? Victoria, an aesthetician for over ten years, recommends a complimentary consultation. “During that time, I can get to know their skin, their regimen at home, and their goals. I love to educate people about skin care.”
She has greatly benefited from facials and can relate to many of her clients’ concerns. “I used to have horrible cystic acne, and when I show people my picture from back then, they can’t believe it’s me. So, I do understand and connect with my clients.”
Just like going to the dentist and having your teeth cleaned, spa services are now becoming a regular part of self-care for many. “It’s your skin; it’s important to keep it healthy,” she says.
Along with facials, the med spa offers many other stateof-the-art services to help clients look and feel their best. Botox®, dermal fillers, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PFP) treatments, microneedling, CoolSculpting®, and injectable weight loss programs are only a small sample of what’s available.
The spa welcomes both men and women. “The most popular services with our male patients are toxins for wrinkles and laser hair removal, especially for backs,” says Ed. “Laser hair removal is also a big request with our transgender patients. Just like women, men also like to come in for facials.”
To make services even more affordable, clients are offered packages along with monthly specials. But, just because Montclair Rejuvenation Center offers lower prices, it does not skimp on quality. “We pride ourselves on bringing the latest techniques and procedures,” he says. “Everyone on staff is either a master injector or is on a path to becoming a master injector.”
He adds, “This is not just a job for me and my wife. It’s something that we enjoy doing for others every day.”

Key Considerations When Upgrading Your KITCHEN APPLIANCES
TThe holidays are synonymous with feasts, family gatherings, and fond memories in the kitchen. If you’re contemplating a kitchen appliance upgrade before the festivities begin, here are some vital points to contemplate.
FUNCTIONALITY & SIZE:
Before you splurge, evaluate what appliances you frequently use and the size suitable for your family. A larger oven might be ideal for holiday turkeys, but ensure it fits seamlessly in your kitchen space.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY:
Modern appliances often come with better energy ratings. Upgrading might mean a higher upfront cost but can result in significant savings on your energy bills in the long run.
ADVANCED FEATURES:
Today’s appliances offer smart features like programmable settings, touch interfaces, and connectivity to mobile devices. Think about which features would genuinely enhance your cooking experience.
AESTHETIC & DESIGN:
Ensure your new appliances match your kitchen’s overall design and color scheme. Cohesive aesthetics can elevate the entire look and feel of the space.
INSTALLATION & WARRANTY:
Opt for brands and stores, like Reno’s Appliance, that provide reliable installation services. A proper installation ensures longevity, and a solid warranty offers peace of mind.
BUDGET:
Set a realistic budget. Remember, the most expensive is only sometimes the best. Prioritize what you need most and find a balance between quality and cost.

What Type of Stone is Best for a Fireplace Surround?
SStone fireplace surrounds are available in a wide range of colors, patterns and textures that can match any design style. From its heat tolerance, to it’s hard, scratch resistant surface, natural stone can handle the rigors of day-to-day use.
• Slate is resistant to heat, but only appropriate for gas and electric fireplaces—the heat from wood fires can be too intense.
• Marble is chosen by many for its timeless beauty, and it is heat tolerance and can be used with wood burning, gas or electric fireplaces.
• Granite is suitable for gas or wood burning fireplaces. The stone does require regular sealing, but it is relatively low maintenance and easy to care for.
• Limestone is very durable and has good heat tolerance. However, this stone should only be used with electric or gas fireplaces.

Is It Time to
Replace Your Roof?
YYour roof is a critical home component, providing protection and security for you and your family. Over time, wear and tear can take its toll, and it’s essential to watch for signs that indicate it may be time for a replacement.
If you notice water stains on your ceiling or walls or signs of water damage in your attic, your roof may be compromised. If not addressed, leaks can lead to significant structural damage.
Look at your roof from the ground to see if any shingles are missing, curling or cracking, or damaged. These issues can leave your roof vulnerable to leaks and other damage. If you notice a droop or sag in your roof, it could indicate structural issues that must be addressed.
As roofs age, they can become less energy-efficient, allowing heat to escape during the winter and making your cooling system work harder in the summer. An increase in your energy bills could be a sign that your roof no longer provides adequate insulation.
While not necessarily a structural concern, moss, algae, or mold growths can trap moisture and cause shingles to deteriorate more quickly.
Over time, roofs can show visible signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, dents, or general deterioration. If your roof is exceeding its expected life expectancy, it’s likely time to consider a replacement as roofing materials have limited lifespan. If your roof looks worn out and past
its prime, it should be inspected by a professional who can thoroughly assess your roof’s condition and determine if it’s time for a replacement.

THE RISE OF WALLCOVERINGS and Why You Should Consider Them for Your Home
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
RRachel Kapner, President of Creative Wallcoverings & Interiors (CWI.Design), talks about the growing popularity of wallcoverings and why working with a design professional makes a difference. CWI.Design is known for creating interiors that reflect clients’ lifestyles through thoughtful design and expert guidance, handling everything from consultation to project management to ensure seamless results. From textured fabrics to custom digital prints, today’s wallcoverings offer various options to transform any room with minimal effort. Whether you want to make a bold statement or add subtle warmth, wallcoverings are a versatile, stylish solution.
What are some popular types of wallcoverings today, and how do they enhance a room?
Wallcoverings now include a range of materials like raffia, grasscloth, and textiles that add texture and warmth to a space. Raffia, for instance, creates a natural feel, while bold murals or large florals can make a statement. Even ceilings are getting attention, with wallpaper adding dimension and depth in unexpected ways.
What trends are popular in wallcoverings these days?
Bold patterns, saturated colors, and rich tones like jewel and earthy shades are trending. Geometric designs, large florals, and metallic finishes are popular for creating visual interest. Murals
that mimic hand-painted designs are also in demand. Textures like grasscloth continue to be favored for adding subtle sophistication.
How has wallpaper technology changed, and what makes it appealing now?
Advances in custom printing allow homeowners to create personalized designs by submitting images or patterns. This technology provides a new level of customization, while traditional hand-screened wallpapers still offer texture and richness. Digital prints offer more affordable options with vibrant colors.
Why work with a professional when choosing and installing wallcoverings?
A professional can help you select materials, patterns, and textures to complement your space. They ensure proper installation so the wallpaper adheres smoothly and can be easily removed. Plus, they balance bold designs and subtle accents to create cohesive, visually appealing spaces.

FINISHED BASEMENTS Can Be the Ultimate Home Upgrade
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
ADomenic Mangiarelli, owner of Mangiarelli Contracting, says that finished basements are making a big comeback these days. “It’s one of the most cost-effective ways to add space to your home without the hassle of building an addition,” he explains. A finished basement not only increases your home’s square footage but also significantly boosts its value, often offering up to a 70% return on investment.
Unlike traditional additions that require new foundations and major disruptions to daily life, finishing a basement keeps the work contained. “The work doesn’t affect the family upstairs,” Mangiarelli says, adding that it’s a quicker, more convenient project that can be completed in weeks opposed to months for a traditional addition.
Another key benefit is energy efficiency. Since most basements are below grade,
they naturally stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, helping homeowners save on heating and cooling costs. Plus, with existing plumbing being in the basement, adding features like bathrooms or wet bars becomes easier and more affordable.
Finished basements offer endless possibilities for customization. Whether you need a home office, gym, playroom, rec room, bathroom, wet bar, guest space, or even an area for a child returning from college, they provide the flexibility to meet your family’s evolving needs. Mangiarelli notes that many families are even opting for soundproof music rooms or home theaters, while others are creating outdoor access for convenience with backyard pools.
“Finishing a basement allows homeowners to increase their living space without the

For older homes or for spaces that make it hard to run HVAC ductwork, Carrier® mini split heating and cooling systems are a great solution. They don’t require the ductwork that is difficult to install in older construction, or in homes without attics or adequate closet space to do so.
• The units can be mounted high or low on any wall, or on the floor.
• Energy bills are lower because the units, hyper-zoned to a specific space, deliver better heating/cooling balance between rooms.
• Greater comfort from room to room, whether heating or cooling.
• Their inverter technology hardly draws any electrical current.
• Up to five units can run off one compressor and the compressor is very quiet.
These compact systems focus on individual living spaces, making them more flexible, energy efficient, and easier to install. Give us a call for more details or for a free in-home survey.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME WITH CURB APPEAL
TThere is some dispute over who first said, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” But what is never disputed is the importance of curb appeal—and how your home’s first impression impacts the sale of your home.
So, can curb appeal really affect your home’s sale price? According to a Michigan State University study, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Their study showed that a well-manicured exterior has a tremendous effect on the perceived value of a home, with values ranging from between 5%-11% higher. And homes with great curb appeal sell faster—which usually translates to higher dollar offers and less stress for sellers.
Here’s a few tips on maximizing the value of your home by improving your landscaping and the value of your home with curb appeal. This will help you get top dollar when you sell.
FRESHEN UP LAWNS AND BUSHES
• Freshen up lawns and edging. Your home will gain extra points with buyers if your landscape is well-manicured.
• Make sure the lawn is in top-notch condition—If there are bare spots, add seed or sod. Use lawn food and water well to keep grass green and healthy
• Prune overgrown, unruly shrubs. If bushes are leggy and unattractive, replace them
• Remove weeds from around bushes and trees and add a fresh layer of mulch
• Add colorful container gardens throughout the property
• Spruce up planting beds with colorful flowers
• Install a thick bed of mulch around gardens and shrubs
• Landscape the pathway to your house
• Add colorful annuals beneath trees or shrubs, or to line walkway or driveway
• Plant flowers underneath a new, upscale mailbox
CREATE LIFESTYLE AND FOCAL POINTS
• Add or update outdoor kitchens and dining spaces, patio areas, firepits or water features
• Create an inviting seating area in an empty space in your front yard using an Adirondack chair or hardscaped seating wall or bench
• Add outdoor lighting to define walkways, driveway, seating areas, focal points, and doorway
• Add attractive stone hardscaping features and specimen trees in prominent areas
Making Holiday Spirits and Homes Bright!
SSingle-color Christmas lights are an asset for any holiday lover, especially if you want to have a unique look to your décor. Finding the right balance is key to creating a lighting presentation that is truly your own. Using single-color Christmas light strands together avoids scattering the focus.
Place single-color Christmas lights around the edge of your garage while alternating additional one-color strands on the roof. Be careful not to overdo it. A couple of color variations for single-color ropes will do the trick for nearly any area you want to decorate.

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS
When and Why to Change Your Smoke Detectors
SSmoke detectors are vital tools designed to alert homeowners of potential fire hazards, giving invaluable time to escape. Ensuring they function correctly is of utmost importance for the safety of every home.
Most smoke detectors have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years. After this time, even if they appear operational, their internal sensors might have degraded, causing reduced sensitivity. Therefore, it’s recommended to replace them every decade.
In addition to the age, consider the technical advancements in today’s detectors. Modern smoke alarms boast features like interconnected systems, where if one alarm sounds, all alarms in the house will alert. Some also come equipped with carbon monoxide detection, voice alerts, and smart technology integrations allowing you to monitor and control them via smartphones.
Frequent false alarms or chirps even after battery replacements are signs that it’s time for a new detector.

DESIGNS TRENDS FOR 2025
WWe are seeing some exciting design trends developing for 2025. Here are a few to look for:
Biophilic Design —Design that integrates plants, natural light, and natural materials to create a healthier and more livable environment. This type of design features natural shapes and forms, earthy color palettes, and locally sourced materials.
Wellness Spaces —Designing spaces that enhance your overall mental, emotional, and physical health. These spaces could include fitness rooms, meditation rooms, spiritual spaces, etc.
Sensorial Interiors —The key to this type of design is using materials that engage your senses. Pleasing textures, soft flooring, playful curvy shapes, and even scents are brought to the forefront. Aesthetics are still important, but how a space makes you feel is the main design objective.
Discrete Tech —We all love our technology and how we can subtly integrate it into our well-designed spaces. That trend continues into 2025 with
advances in smart home technology. TVs now have a slim enough profile to look like art, switches can communicate with your light fixtures wirelessly so you can place them anywhere, and you can control your thermostats, lights, audio, etc., via apps from anywhere. You don’t need a major renovation to have it.
Colors —Warm colors are becoming popular again. Terracotta, brown, red, orange, yellow, peach and more are making a splash. With the introduction of new fabrics, furnishings, and decor in 2025, we will see more of this.

Why Fall is the Perfect Time to Install Sod or Seed
AAs summer fades and the days grow shorter, fall emerges as one of the best times to install sod or seed in your yard. With cooler temperatures and ideal conditions, this season provides a unique opportunity to establish a lush, healthy lawn.
The cooler weather of fall creates the perfect environment for grass seed germination. Soil temperatures remain warm enough to promote growth, while the cooler air temperatures reduce stress on new seedlings. This combination helps seedlings establish strong roots before winter arrives.
Fall’s cooler temperatures and increased rainfall typically mean you won’t have to water as frequently. This not only saves you time and effort but also conserves water—a significant
benefit for those looking to maintain an eco-friendly lawn.
Fall is a natural period when many weeds die off, reducing competition for nutrients and water. Installing sod or seed during this time allows your grass to thrive without the stress of competing with aggressive weeds that are more prevalent in spring and summer.
Fall rains soften the soil, making it easier for seeds to penetrate and establish roots. The moisture also aids nutrient absorption, giving your new lawn the best possible start.
Cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass or fescue, thrive in fall and can withstand the upcoming winter months. Proper soil preparation is critical to a

Enhance Your Home with Expert Landscape Lighting: Fall and Winter Preparation
As the days grow shorter with the approach of fall and winter, landscape lighting plays a key role in enhancing curb appeal, extending outdoor living, and improving security. Thoughtful landscape lighting design can transform a property, making it both beautiful and functional in the darker months.
To maximize curb appeal, focus on highlighting architectural features, plants, and pathways. Strategically placed lighting can accentuate your home’s façade while drawing attention to key landscaping elements, adding elegance and charm. For entertaining, gently illuminate patios, decks, and outdoor kitchens, creating a cozy atmosphere that allows family and friends to gather comfortably even as daylight fades earlier. A warm, subtle glow promotes relaxation and ensures the space is inviting.
When it comes to security, lighting around windows, doors, and other access points is critical. Properly positioned fixtures can deter potential intruders by eliminating dark hiding spots and improving visibility around the perimeter of the home.
For long-lasting, reliable installations, it is essential to use high-quality materials. Opt for durable brass or stainless-steel luminaires and energy-efficient LED sources to ensure your lighting withstands harsh winter conditions. LED technology offers longevity and consistent performance, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.
Additionally, ensure that all underground wiring and electrical components are installed according to national electrical standards for low-voltage lighting. Proper installation guarantees not only safety but also the long-term functionality of your system.
By investing in quality landscape lighting and proper installation techniques, you can extend the beauty and security of your home year-round, even as fall and winter set in.

UPGRADING YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS ESSENTIAL FOR TODAY’S MODERN LIVING
UUpgrading your home’s electrical system is crucial, especially as power demands continue to rise. According to George R. Anderson, owner of Anderson Electric Corp., there are three primary reasons why homeowners should consider this upgrade.
First, with the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), many homes need a 200-amp service to handle the significant power required to charge these vehicles. Older systems, typically 60-100 amps, may not provide the necessary capacity, leading to insufficient power supply for EV chargers.
Second, older electrical services, particularly those installed in homes built several decades ago, often have exterior wiring that has deteriorated over time. This deterioration can lead to significant safety hazards. For example, cracked insulation or exposed wires can allow moisture to seep in, leading to corrosion or even fire risks. Therefore,
upgrading ensures both the exterior wiring and the meter are modern and weatherproof.
Finally, upgrading your electrical system allows for the addition of new branch circuits, which are essential for powering modern appliances and home additions. With today’s homes requiring more power than ever before for appliances like saunas, HVAC systems, and exercise equipment, upgrading to a 200-amp service ensures your home can safely handle these demands.
The good news is that an electrical system upgrade can be done quickly. “Most service upgrades are completed in just one day. Power is usually restored by the afternoon, minimizing any disruption,” explains Anderson. This efficiency makes it a convenient option for homeowners.

BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL
AAs the innovative owner of Champion Waste Removal & Recycling, Louis Mauriello seeks new ways to serve his clients best. Champion’s services have evolved with changing community demographics. Aging populations are growing, and younger generations are moving away from the region. Customers need ways to remove and recycle waste quickly.
Renting quality dumpsters has become a large portion of Champion’s waste removal business. To accommodate this growing need, Champion uses special, custom-made trucks with cosmetic appeal that can travel the area’s winding and narrow roads. The trucks are clean, inviting, and freshly detailed.
Look for quality, safety, and economic savings when selecting a dumpster. Champion’s dumpsters exceed expectations. The dumpsters, painted in a safety-yellow color, sparkle in the daylight and ensure high visibility at night, enhancing safety during waste removal. They are placed in the driveways on

protective wood or planks on grass or dirt, further ensuring safety during placement. Clients have a selection of four dumpster sizes, and Champion adjusts the dumpster price according to the amount of waste in the dumpsters.
Reaffirming his commitment, Louis states,” Champion’s dedication to innovation is what sets us apart in the industry.”

KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS
BY TAKIA LIVINGSTON, OWNER AND GENERAL MANAGER
TThe kitchen remains the heart of every home, and has the hub of family life, it continually evolves with technology and style. Today’s kitchens are not just for cooking but for entertaining, relaxing, and connecting. Let’s explore the trends shaping the future of kitchens, and a glimpse of what’s making a comeback.
1. Two-tone cabinetry allows homeowners to play with contrast and depth. Experiment with colors inspired by nature, such as deep ocean blues paired with sandy beiges, lush forest greens, and warm wood tones. Avoid mixing too many bold colors at once.
2. Open shelving continues to gain popularity for its airy aesthetic, allowing homeowners to showcase their finest kitchenware or add a splash of greenery.
3. Technology is revolutionizing kitchens. Invest in smart appliances that enhance convenience and energy efficiency.
4. Eco-conscious living is influencing kitchen design globally. Incorporate sustainable materials like bamboo or reclaimed wood from local sources. Consider using durable and moisture-resistant recycled glass for countertops, adding a unique, eco-friendly flair.
5. White and grey have long dominated kitchen palettes, but we’re seeing a shift back to warm tones. With its rich grains and earthy tones, natural wood is becoming a favorite again – a perfect fit for creating a welcoming atmosphere.
• Vibrant, colorful backsplashes, offering a perfect opportunity to incorporate patterns or colors inspired by local flora and fauna.
• Mixing metals adds depth and interest, such as combining brushed gold with cooler tones such as brushed nickel.
• Vintage elements such as farmhouse sinks or classic stoves to add character.

SHARI-BETH SUSSKIND Evocative Resin And Color
STORY AND PORTRAIT BY DAN EPSTEIN
TThe daughter of a dry cleaner who was an enthusiastic sculptor in his spare time never set out to be an artist. Livingston resident Shari-Beth Susskind studied marketing in college and loving fashion, that world became her first career. As people sometimes do, she married, and had children. After the birth of her third child, she became certified as a fitness trainer and ultimately created a thriving personal fitness training studio.
In 2017, the creative urge struck and she ordered “a bunch of stuff” from Amazon. The stuff was polymer resin and coloring agents. She was immediately in love with the medium. Through a variety of methods she moves the colored resins around on her working surface. She loves, she says how the medium when working “goes from cake batter to hard and shiny.” Sometimes the colors and compositions are very ordered, and sometimes seemingly random and abstract. Always, we find, the end result is eye-catching and stops us in our tracks.
In the beginning, Susskind simply decorated her fitness studio with these personal works of Art, and not surprisingly: her fitness clients started commissioning her to create resin
paintings for their homes. Now people find her both through social media and by recommendations from an interior designer.
I Stand With Israel, is a 64x32 inch resin acrylic painting on a Sintra panel. Created in the aftermath of the October attack in Israel, Susskind felt it needed to be blue and white to mirror the colors of the flag of Israel, and has a hidden word underneath
When she created Go With The Flow in 2020, a 54x20 resin acrylic painting on Sintra Panel, as a commission, she says it was a look the client wanted, which is easy to see was inspired by agate.
Also created in 2020, a diptych called Amelia consists of two 30x30 resin acrylic panels on Sintra, which hang together. She connects these pieces to “Fortitude” believing that it signifies: “…mental and emotional strength, and facing difficulty, adversity, danger or temptation courageously.” Central to Susskind’s work is the understanding that, “I have control until I don’t have control,” in that the acrylic material used in this work is controllable up to a point. It sometimes changes when it dries. We find her results always provocative and worth a look. SUBTLE AND ELEGANT BEAUTY TRANSFORMATIONS
HONORING PATIENTS’ UNIQUE DESIRES AND STORIES
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
WWhen Dr. Caroline Szpalski launched her own plastic surgery practice last fall, her goal was to provide patients with a caring and positive experience, backed by nearly 10 years of expertise in the field. As a former model who grew up immersed in global beauty, she offers a unique perspective to her patients.
“They’re not going to feel pressured when they walk in,” she says. “I aim for natural results, so if they ask for something that won’t work for them, I educate them on better options. Honesty is essential in keeping patients happy and safe.”
Many changes, whether minimally invasive or surgical, can be done subtly and elegantly. “I’m candid and I’m not going to upsell anything. When someone comes in for Botox® for the first time, I take it slow. I ask them to choose two things that matter the most to them, and if they like the results, we can do more next time.”
Dr. Szpalski believes that being a mother of two and having a diverse background allows her to connect deeply with her patients. They can share openly about their concerns, especially about their bodies after childbirth or other issues that only another woman might understand.
She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and respecting unique features. “We all have different features, and a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t yield the best results,” she explains. “I believe in understanding each patient’s whole person and their story. I truly care about our differences and strive to honor them in my practice.”

Get Smooth Skin Year-Round with Sugaring at L.A. Bikini
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
If you’re looking for a natural, gentler alternative to waxing, sugaring at L.A. Bikini in Livingston might be the perfect solution for achieving smooth, flawless skin. This centuries-old hair removal method uses a blend of sugar, water, and lemon, applied cool to the skin. This method prevents burns, minimizes irritation, and is suitable for all skin types. Unlike traditional waxing, sugaring is applied against the direction of hair growth, reducing ingrown hairs and skin trauma and leaving you with healthier, glowing skin.
At L.A. Bikini, clients can enjoy full-body treatments, including underarms, face, legs, and bikini areas. While many think hair removal is only necessary in the summer, starting sugaring in the winter can leave you nearly hairfree when warm weather arrives. Regular treatments help to damage hair follicles in the growing stage, leading to permanent results, especially in areas like legs and bikinis. Start now, and enjoy smoother skin year-round! L.A.

Indoor Gardening for Fun, Health & Sustainable Living
BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
TThe move toward more sustainable living has gained traction in recent years with people looking to help the environment and their wallets. Gardening is a great hobby to support a more sustainable lifestyle. It’s fun, saves money on groceries, and helps you feel accomplished by eating something you grew. It also promotes healthy living, cooking at home, and eating more nutritious foods. When you grow your own food at home, you also know exactly what’s in it and how it was produced.
Gardening can be difficult, especially outdoor gardening, because there are so many variables. This includes climate changes, unpredictable weather, and plants getting eaten by wildlife or pests. Indoor gardening allows you to grow veggies year-round in the comfort of your home, with a greater likelihood of success because you control the environment. This is also beneficial for those with little or no outdoor space to incorporate nature into their daily lives. Herbs, leafy plants, and microgreens are the most common edible plants for indoor growing. They generally do well with shallow soil because they’re smaller and don’t need as much space inside. They also don’t need as much sun and are easier to grow if you’re just starting out.
Growing plants indoors is good for your health in other ways too. Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and generate oxygen, making the air in your home cleaner. Exposure to nature and the accomplishment you feel from successfully starting a garden is also good for your mental health.

“
Out of the Mouth of Babes
BY BARRY FARBER
He who has a thing to sell
And goes and whispers in a well Is not so apt to get the dollars As he who climbs a tree and hollers
– ANONYMOUS
I“
I read that little poem on the back of a sugar packet in a restaurant. It struck me as the perfect definition of marketing: the only way to get someone to buy your product (or your service, idea, or you, yourself) is to get out and holler. The greatest idea in the world is of no use at all if no one knows about it.
A funny thing happens to most of us when we think about marketing ourselves. We shudder at the thought. We’re suddenly shy. We’re modest. We’re embarrassed to talk about ourselves. But think of it this way: If you owned a business, would you simply open a store, sit there, and wait for customers to come to you? If you did, you’d go out of business in a very short time. To succeed, you have to tell people about your product. You have to get
CAR FOR SALE!
the word out. And if you, as the business owner, are reluctant to sell, who else will do it for you?
You don’t become successful by sitting back and waiting for great things to happen. Marketing yourself is the only way to get the word out there. Everyone at the top of their professionfrom CEOs to movie stars - had to sell themselves to get where they are today. You don’t have to be a braggart or a show-off to sell yourself. What you need is a positive attitude and a belief in yourself and your abilities. Selling yourself to others only proves that you have confidence in yourself and are willing to stand behind your beliefs. When you don’t believe in yourself, you only sell yourself short.
One summer, I decided to sell my car. I was washing it and asked my then six-year-old daughter, Hallie, to help me make a large “For Sale” sign. We got the car all clean and shiny and placed the sign in the car window. I gathered up the pails and sponges and headed back toward the garage.
Suddenly, I heard Hallie, in her loudest six-year-old voice, shouting, “Car for sale! My daddy’s car for sale!” I came out of the garage and said, “Hallie, what are you doing?” I remember this was early Sunday morning, and nobody was around. “Daddy,” she said, “nobody’s going to know the car is for sale if we don’t tell them!” One of the most remarkable statements from my now grown-up and very successful daughter, who I couldn’t be prouder of today.
Hallie had a natural understanding of the power of marketing. It’s a power we all have but don’t always understand. Even though we’re not all salespeople, we all sell something. It may be a product, a service, or an idea, but we’re selling something. And in every situation-business and social-we’re selling ourselves.
There is no reason to be embarrassed or ashamed to let others know who you are and what you do. Never be afraid to stand at the end of your driveway and shout your message to anyone who will listen.
And remember this…Things come to those who wait, but only the things left after those who hustle.
