Shining Bright: A North Caldwell Eight-Year-Old’s Journey of Compassion and Crowns
West Caldwell Resident Raises Awareness and Funds for Lung Cancer Research Caldwell Couple Turns an Auction Find into a Dream Farmhouse
It’s not every day you walk into an auction for fun and walk out with a 200-year-old farmhouse! But that’s exactly what happened to Caldwell couple Libby and Russ Lomauro during a visit to Vermont. What began as a casual outing turned into a life-changing project when they purchased a historic home by Lake Champlain— sight unseen, with only a 30-minute preview before the auction.
Their plan for a simple renovation quickly turned into a full-scale restoration. The couple is determined to keep the home’s original charm, including its massive fireplaces, while modernizing where needed. They spend weeks at a time working remotely and restoring the house in their spare hours, while also managing a small vineyard on the property.
Though they’re still a few years from moving in full-time, they’re sharing their journey on social media, hoping their story might one day catch the eye of a renovation TV show. View their progress on Facebook https://bit. ly/3UVvIAX or TikTok @Libby and Russ Buy the Farm
Eight-year-old Rani Juliette of North Caldwell has wowed the pageant scene, first winning the East Coast USA pageant Miss New Jersey Mini Miss competition, and recently winning her division in the Belle of the Ball’s Tropical Christmas competition in Fairfield.
East Coast USA was Rani’s first pageant. Entering for fun, Rani’s confident walks and stunning evening gown performance won her the crown. Her journey didn’t end there; Rani advanced to nationals and earned awards for her community service and dazzling personality.
Inspired by her own experience riding in an ambulance, Rani’s platform is creating custom resin jewelry for children who have ridden in ambulances and those staying in the hospital, offering comfort during difficult times. With a blossoming passion for both community service and performing, Rani brings joy and hope wherever she goes, determined to make a meaningful difference.
The charity “Prelude to a Cure,” founded by cancer survivor Claire Mattern of West Caldwell in memory of her late sister, Linda, recently hosted the fundraiser “Rock Out Lung Cancer 2024,” raising over $25,000 for lung cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The event featured keynote speaker Lenny Weiland of Millburn, a stage-four lung cancer survivor, who shared his journey and performed on the harmonica with live band, The Earthgrinders, highlighting the critical need for early screenings.
Claire established the charity in 2014 to support lung cancer research, focusing on early detection and awareness. She chose lung cancer due to its status as the leading cancer killer and its frequent underfunding, partly due to the stigma surrounding smokers and lung cancer. Her mission emphasizes promoting life-saving early detection methods, including low-dose CT scans, which can catch the disease at Stages I and II when it is potentially curable. Claire aims to save lives and spread awareness about lung cancer. To learn more, visit: preludetoacure.org

Beyond coffee, Orange Sky features gourmet breakfast sandwiches topped with Ray’s house-made spreads, including a sought-after smoked paprika aioli. BREAD & BASICS FUND
OFFERS A LIFELINE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED
WWhen North Caldwell natives Aaren and Anthony Picciuto recognized the growing struggles in the surrounding communities during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, they felt compelled to act. What began as a seed of empathy evolved into the Bread & Basics Fund Inc., a grassroots initiative that has distributed 14 cash grants to families across Essex and Passaic Counties in just over a year. These grants have provided critical relief for unexpected costs—like repairing a burst pipe to keep a newborn warm or covering driving school fees for a single mother’s daughter.
“We noticed that while resources like clothing and food were accessible, what was missing was help with unforeseen bills or childcare costs that can deeply impact a family,” Aaren explains. The Fund’s mission is straightforward but profound: to provide cash grants that restore a sense of stability to families navigating tough times.
To date, Bread & Basics Fund has focused its efforts on building meaningful partnerships with local organizations such as the Oasis charity in Paterson. It has kept marketing “close to the vest,” relying on word-of-mouth, social media, and targeted outreach through community networks. Fundraising events, like ice cream and café nights where a percentage of sales go to the fund, further support its mission. But at its heart, the Bread & Basics Fund is about connection—a small team striving to ensure that families facing challenges don’t feel alone.
While many organizations steer clear of cash aid due to skepticism, Aaren insists that financial assistance can be transformative when distributed thoughtfully. “Helping a family to thrive trickles down to the children,” she says. For Bread & Basics Fund, the aim is not just to provide a handout but a lifeline—one that helps families move from surviving to thriving.
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
As they continue their work, Aaren and Anthony remain motivated by the stories of resilience that emerge from those they help, quietly and behind the scenes. “It’s a mixed feeling — heartbreaking to see the need but fulfilling to know you’ve been able to help,” Aaren reflects. It is this spirit of quiet
dedication and generosity that makes the Bread and Basics Fund a lifeline for families navigating the uncertainties of life.

MONTCLAIR STORY SALON IS BUILDING COMMUNITY AND GIVING BACK ONE STORY AT A TIME
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
LLiz Samuel of Montclair has always believed in the power of stories to connect, inspire, and heal. As the founder of the Montclair Story Salon, a bi-monthly storytelling event that gives back, she creates a space where people from all walks of life come together to share personal narratives—authentic, heartfelt, and often transformative. What started as a small gathering among friends has flourished into a cherished community event, celebrating storytelling as a catalyst for connection and understanding.
Liz traces the origins of the Montclair Story Salon back to her desire to nurture a sense of belonging through shared experiences. “There’s a magic that happens when someone stands up and tells their truth,” she says. “It breaks down barriers, brings strangers closer, and reminds us of our shared humanity.”
The Story Salon features bi-monthly events where storytellers, both seasoned and new, take the mic to share their narratives through words and song, while an artist paints live, adding a unique visual dimension. These tales range from humorous anecdotes to deeply personal journeys. “Authenticity is key,” Liz emphasizes. “It’s about raw, real connections.”
These gatherings, held in venues around Montclair, have become a safe space for vulnerability and courage. The warmth of the community, built over shared laughs and tears, creates a supportive atmosphere that inspires. “The audience is as much a part of the experience as the storytellers. There’s a palpable sense of support in the room,” Liz reflects.
Beyond storytelling, the Montclair Story Salon embraces a mission of giving back. Proceeds from events support local charities and causes, extending the impact of each story told. “The beauty of storytelling is that it can inspire action,” Liz notes. “We’ve raised funds, built awareness, and even sparked volunteer efforts.” Some organizations that have benefited from these events in the past include: Vanguard Theater Company, Succeed2gether, Montclair Community Farms and many more.
For Liz, storytelling is more than an art—it’s a way to create meaningful change and foster deep human connections. Through the Montclair Story Salon, she brings people together, one story at a time, proving that when we share our lives, we build stronger, more compassionate communities.
For those eager to experience the transformative power of storytelling, Montclair Story Salon has several upcoming events that promise to engage and inspire. On Thursday, December 5, “A Warming Place” will be held at First Congregational Church, 40 S. Fullerton, to support Montclair Emergency Services for Hope (MESH), with tickets available soon. On January 23, the salon will host an event to benefit the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE). Then, on February 27, “Blank Canvas,” a special salon for the Montclair Art Museum (MAM),will take place. Don’t miss these opportunities to support storytelling for good causes.

A Shared Love: Treasures of American Painting (1878-1919)
Embarking on their journey as collectors in the 1990s, Carol and Terry Wall discovered a shared passion for art celebrating the creative spirit that flourished in American painting at the turn of the century. Featuring masters of American painting from 1878 to 1919 such as Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent, the collection showcases key elements of early modern art with its varied, vibrant color palettes, simplified forms, and textured brushwork. It also reveals the couple’s shared interest in ethereal, enigmatic portraits as seen in Sargent’s Study for Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885-6).
In essence, A Shared Love not only celebrates the artistic legacy of turn-ofthe-century American art, but also honors the enduring legacy of Carol and Terry Wall, whose passion and generosity continue to inspire and enrich our cultural landscape.

DEFYING THE ODDS: A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE, LOVE, AND TRIUMPH
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
BBorn with an onslaught of medical challenges—extra digits, developmental delays, vision problems, and more—Suzy Fisher’s life was initially defined by a series of “nevers.” Later diagnosed with Joubert syndrome (JS), Suzy faced immense obstacles. Medical experts predicted she would never walk, talk, or function independently. However, with the unwavering support from her mother, Jane, father Al, siblings Ben and Beth, and an extended network of advocates, Suzy, a Livingston resident, defied every expectation. To chronicle their journey of resilience, love, and triumph over impossible odds, Jane authored a memoir titled If You Knew Suzy: Pushing Past the Boundaries of ‘Never’ released in September 2024 and is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Joubert syndrome affects brain development, leading to poor muscle control, abnormal breathing, and vision and kidney issues—challenges Suzy has confronted with remarkable strength. Diagnosed when little was known about JS, Jane navigated a world without modern resources, relying on extensive research and relentless determination. Infant stimulation programs and hours of therapy formed the foundation of Suzy’s progress at a time when special needs programs were scarce.
Suzy’s milestones have been nothing short of monumental. At three and a half, she took her first steps—a miracle for a child with such a prognosis. Facing social isolation in mainstream school, Jane sought specialized programs where Suzy could thrive academically and socially. The Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) in Chatham became a transformative space where Suzy embraced every opportunity, from cheerleading and prom to running for student body treasurer with the slogan, “Vote for the honey with your money.” Suzy’s Bat Mitzvah, made possible through a program Jane helped create at their temple, marked another significant achievement.
At 24, Suzy faced end-stage kidney failure, enduring dialysis and traveling with her family across the country to find a suitable donor. This journey ultimately led to a successful transplant. When her first kidney began to fail, Suzy received a second transplant in 2013, which continues to sustain her.
Despite her setbacks, Suzy’s life is filled with kindness, empathy, and a refusal to give up. Her magnetic personality, humor, and compassion bring joy and foster deep connections with everyone around her. Jane and Suzy now advocate for early detection of Joubert syndrome and related genetic conditions, promoting genetic testing and raising awareness within high-risk populations to improve outcomes for affected individuals. Equally important to the Fischers is educating the public about the critical need for organ donation and advocating for families of children with special needs.
The story of Jane and Suzy Fisher is one of unwavering love, resilience, and community impact, often referred to as ‘the Suzy effect’—a powerful force that transforms everyone Suzy meets with her kindness and grace. Their journey inspires countless families facing similar challenges. If You Knew Suzy serves as a roadmap for parents, a tribute to perseverance, and a call to embrace every challenge with courage and hope, rewriting every ‘never.’

Victorian Society in America Presents CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
UUsing original photographs, vintage images, and live seasonal music, Kevin Woyce explores the history of favorite Christmas Traditions, from the First Christmas to “A Christmas Carol,” festive cards and decorations, and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. He also explains how historical figures including Saint Nicholas, Martin Luther, Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, Thomas Nast, and many others shaped the way we celebrate “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”
Author Kevin Woyce has published books about the NJ Shore, Lighthouses, New Jersey State Parks, Niagara Falls, the Statue of Liberty, and favorite Christmas traditions. All of these books are illustrated with his original black & white photographs, plus some vintage images. He has also published a book of color photographs. Kevin began lecturing on regional history in 2008, and in 2018 he launched Christmas Traditions, which was not only his first holiday-themed presentation, but also the first to include live music.

Two Ladies in Leopard POP UP EXHIBIT
Judyann Affronti and Cathy McCoy Bristol’s pop up exhibit give guests a chance to witness the debut of the artists’ first collaborative piece—a fusion of Cathy’s vibrant and expressive portraiture and Judyann’s intricate felt and fabric collages.
McCoy Bristol’s subject of choice is figure painting, where she documents the human experience in paint. Her warm inviting scenes often depict families, groups, or children interacting and enjoying each other’s company that also hold indirect messages of diversity and social commentary. “We all have the needs of touch, love, family, comfort, food, companionship, community, apprenticeship, rites of
passage, education/training, and language. We all have struggles, seen or suffered injustice,” states McCoy Bristol in her personal statement. “We strengthen what we focus on, most of my work focuses on what is common to all people.”
“Much of my work is my reinterpretation of the traditional arts of central Mexico: Otomi and Tejuantepec embroidery, Zapotec alebrijes, Talavera pottery, and Teotitlan weaving,” Affronti writes on her website. Her felt collages, mounted on stretched canvas, reflect her world in a joyous burst of color and shapes, distilled down to their minimal components
While visiting, don’t miss the Gift Shop, offering an array of art-inspired items crafted by local artists. The selection includes handmade jewelry, scarves, ceramics, paintings, cards, soaps, home décor, and more—perfect for finding oneof-a-kind holiday gifts.

FFor over 50 years Hot Tuna, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, have brought a wealth of emotions to their music through deep perceptions and tremendous talent. Members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy recipients, they are always injecting fresh energy into their sound with constant improvisation taking their musical horizons further. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady were also at the heart of Jefferson Airplane, another iconic group with roots in the 1960s.
Long considered one of rock’s first bass heroes, Jack Casady has been thumping and plucking four-strings in front of audiences since the mid ‘60s. Casady’s creativity is evidenced by his continually evolving bass solos in his extensive library of songs and live performances and at 81 years of age, Kaukonen remains at the apex of his skills, captivatingly singing in a husky voice and humbly yet proficiently playing blues licks that rival the iconic leads of many blues rock masters. Together, they are wellseasoned musicians and musical treasures.
To some fans, Hot Tuna is a reminder of wild and happy times. To others, the name will forever be linked to their own discovery of the power and depth of American Blues music. To newer fans, Hot Tuna is a band that is on the cutting edge of music. Hot Tuna remains one of the most innovative Rock and Roll bands in American music.

CLEAR YOUR MIND
Exploring Brain Fog
BBrain fog is a colloquial term for a state of mental dullness or confusion characterized by difficulties in concentration, clarity of thought, and memory. Individuals experiencing brain fog often report feeling mentally fatigued, as if their thoughts are sluggish or obscured, making it challenging to focus on tasks or make decisions.
This condition is not classified as a medical diagnosis but is often a symptom associated with a variety of factors, including stress, sleep deprivation, hormonal fluctuations, or more serious underlying health issues such as anxiety and depression. Additionally, lifestyle choices, like a poor diet, dehydration, and lack of physical activity, can contribute to this overwhelming sense of mental haze.
To combat brain fog, adopting a holistic approach focusing on improving overall health is beneficial. Strategies include ensuring adequate restful sleep, maintaining a balanced diet rich in nutrients, staying hydrated, and managing stress through mindfulness practices or physical exercise. By addressing these areas, many individuals find relief from the cloudiness of their thoughts, allowing for clearer thinking and improved cognitive function.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER
Shedding Light on a Common Struggle
As the seasons change, many individuals look forward to the beauty of autumn leaves or the charm of snowy winters. However, for some, the transition to colder months brings about a serious condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This form of depression typically occurs during the fall and winter months when daylight hours are shorter, leading to various emotional and physical challenges.
SAD is a type of depression that is directly tied to changes in seasons. According to mental health professionals, SAD is characterized by recurring depressive episodes that follow a seasonal pattern. While many people experience fluctuations in mood during seasonal changes, those with SAD may experience more pronounced symptoms that can
significantly impact their daily lives.
Common symptoms of SAD include:
• Persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness
• Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
• Changes in appetite or weight (usually craving carbohydrates)
• Sleep disturbances, such as oversleeping or insomnia
• Difficulty concentrating
• Fatigue or low energy
• Social withdrawal
While SAD can occur in individuals with a history of other mood disorders, it may also manifest in those who have never struggled with depression before.

Light Therapy which involves sitting near a specialized light box that mimics natural sunlight can help regulate the body’s internal clock and improve mood.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be effective by helping individuals develop coping strategies and challenge negative thought patterns.
Antidepressant medications may be prescribed to manage symptoms, particularly for individuals with severe depression.
Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a balanced diet, and practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques can also support mental well-being during the winter months.

Is Manual Lymph Drainage for You?
Most of us experience a lot of holiday stress and indulge in at least two or three of the four “C’s” of the holiday season candies, cookies, cakes and cocktails. Unfortunately, most holiday food is full of sugar, and increased sugar intake weakens our immune system setting the stage for illness. Mix in the stress of parties, shopping, and neglecting self care and we have now created the perfect storm for the cold or flu to knock us down!
“To help combat the four “C’s” and to keep your immune system strong some people can benefit from a Manual Lymph Drainage Massage,” states Kathy McCready of Provident Health and Fitness. Lymph massage can benefit just about everyone. If you're feeling tired and low on energy, or if you've been sick and feeling like your body is fighting to get back on track, lymph massage would likely serve you well. Athletes, surgical patients, Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue suffers, and anyone wanting a fresh look should consider MLD therapy
A healthy and viable lymph system means that your body can drain out foreign invaders, toxins, and wastes so you heal much faster.

Understanding TECH NECK
IIn today’s digital age, where screens dominate our daily lives, a common health issue has emerged: tech neck. This condition, characterized by neck pain and discomfort resulting from prolonged periods of looking down at devices, has become increasingly prevalent as more people work from home and engage with technology for leisure.
Our Centers Offer:
• Services for Children Dealing with School and Family Dynamics
• Individual/Family/Couples/Children and Teen Therapy
• Variety of Clinical Therapy Expertise
• Most Insurances Accepted
• Telemedicine Appointments Available
• Convenient day, evening and Saturday hours
Tech neck, or “text neck,” refers to the repetitive strain injury caused by poor posture when using electronic devices. It is often associated with the inclination of the head downwards, leading to increased stress on the neck and spine. Studies have shown that the average human head weighs 10 to 12 pounds; however, the pressure exerted on the neck can spike to over 50 pounds when tilted forward.
Some causes of Tech Neck include:
Prolonged Device Use: Whether scrolling through social media, sending texts, or working on a laptop, extended periods of looking down can lead to muscle fatigue and strain.
Poor Ergonomics: Many people do not have ergonomically designed workspaces, which causes them to hunch or lean excessively, further aggravating their neck and back.
Lack of Breaks: Continuous hours spent on devices without breaks can cause the muscles in the neck to become tense and tight.
Poor Posture: Slouching or leaning forward when using devices can contribute significantly to the onset of tech neck.
Those suffering from tech neck may experience a variety of symptoms. Neck pain can range from mild to severe, often exacerbated by movement. Tension in the neck can lead to pain that radiates to the shoulders. Chronic neck strain can trigger tension headaches, particularly at the base of the skull. Increased stiffness may lead to a limited range of motion in the neck. Postural issues can also affect the upper back, leading to discomfort.

Attitude of Gratitude
BY BARRY FARBER
II’ve had the amazing opportunity to write this column for over 25 years. I wanted to thank all the readers for your inspiring letters and continued support.
I do hope Diamond Minds lifts you up and makes you look at life a little differently. Sometimes we just need reminding of the basics and simple things that make us appreciate what we have and live life to its fullest. Here are some of those reminders…
• The founder of Ralston Purina said; “Catch a passion for helping others and a richer life comes back to you.” When your focus is on elevating others you in turn elevate yourself. We are at our best when we are providing a valuable service to others. As the late great Earl Nightingale said; “Our rewards in life are in direct proportion to our service”.
• Breathe. In every martial art, breathing is one of the most critical factors for control and power. Yet it is one of the last things we think of when confronted with conflict. Breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and heart, improves mental observation and concentration, and ultimately reduces stress.
• One of my favorite quotes by Winston Churchill, “A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.”
There is always something valuable that can be derived out of difficulty, adversity or change.
• Learn your craft well. Study everything about your profession so you attain deep knowledge. That deep understanding gives you great confidence which is one of the greatest assets when faced with adversity and a challenging environment.
• Transparency… Be comfortable in your own skin. Many years ago, a good friend of mine told me that your potential increases tremendously when you stay true to who you are. Never underestimate the power of being yourself and connecting with people on a whole different level.
• One of the strangest secrets that has been discovered is that we become what we think about. So be selective in what you read and who you surround yourself with. Our thoughts become our actions and it all starts in the mind.
• Constant learning… Constant action… Both are equal… Both are necessary… We learn from our actions… We act from our learning… One without the other suffers… Both together provide depth and clarity in truth.
Barry Farber
• Successful people do the things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do.
• When changes come your way keep an open mind and look for ways to take advantage of the situation by not being so rigid in your approach. When we get set in our ways that is what seems to get “in the way” of new opportunities.
• No one cares how much you know until they see how much you care. Learn to listen more than you talk.
One of the most inspiring thoughts ever written was produced some 4500 years ago in Sanskrit; I am sharing it in translation:
“Look well to this one day, for it and it alone is life. In the brief course of this one-day lie all the verities and realities of your existence— the pride of growth, the glory of action, the splendor of beauty. Yesterday is only a dream, and tomorrow is but a vision. Yet each day, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and each tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this one day, for it and it alone is life.”
And to the husband and wife in Whole Foods the other day… Thank you for your kind words!
