MSouth Orange Resident Writes Captivating Historical Fiction Book for Young Readers
In the book, Mary made groundbreaking discoveries in paleontology, including the first complete 17-foot-long Ichthyosaurus skeleton. Despite her significant contributions, she faced skepticism and discrimination from the maledominated scientific community. Over the course of a year, she proved her discovery was authentic.
ichele C. Hollow, a freelance journalist from South Orange, has released a historical fiction book for third to seventh graders about Mary Anning, a 12-year-old fossil hunter from the early 19th century, which is called “Jurassic Girl: The Adventures of Mary Anning.”
The book portrays Mary as a determined young girl who defied societal norms to pursue her passion.
Michele hopes Mary’s story of resilience and curiosity inspires readers to explore their interests and persist in the face of challenges.
“Jurassic Girl,” published by Ulysses Press, is available wherever books are sold.
Noble Hungers: South Orange’s Delicious New Literary Spot

Founded by former literary festival organizer and marketing professional, Camille Davies Mandel, Noble Hungers offers a unique collection that spans cookbooks, chef memoirs, and food writing, from the intricacies of French cooking to the art of mixology.
Camille’s passion for literature and food seamlessly blends in this space, which not only sells books but also hosts a variety of events, including author readings, tasting events, and the soon-to-launch Bake Club. This club will bring members together to bake from a chosen cookbook each month and share their culinary creations. Noble Hungers, operating out of the CoLab cooperative retail space, is set to become a vibrant community hub where food and literature enthusiasts can connect, learn, and savor the joys of culinary arts.
Exploring Emotions Through Stories: A Journey in Mood Swings
Rohit Prasad, a former Short Hills resident, recently released his second book titled Mood Swings, a collection of nine short stories, each centered around one of the nine basic emotions as known in the dramatic arts— ranging from bravery and joy to calmness and beauty. These stories delve into how emotions influence our decisions and actions, offering answers to questions like: To what extent will one respond to insults, soothe hurt, or rise above one’s worst deed?
His first book, The Pilgrim: Inferno Redux, focused on the theme of sin and its consequences, while his new book offers a fresh perspective on how emotions shape our lives. He recently participated in an engrossing book reading session hosted by the Millburn Library, and his next book reading will be held on November 14 at 6 p.m. at 505 8th Ave, New York. Mood Swings, available on Amazon, will leave readers charmed, introspective, and eager for more.

Teens Take the Lead: Exploring Civil Rights and Jewish Values on a
Four-Day Journey!
Looking for a teen program that’s more than just another extracurricular?
Temple B’nai Abraham’s Teen Program is shaking things up by blending leadership, community service, and hands-on learning with a Jewish twist. This dynamic program, based at the temple located on the border of Livingston and Millburn, gives teens the chance to serve on committees, learning about philanthropy, Jewish communal service, and finding their own political and social justice voice. From organizing events to making a real impact, these teens aren’t just participants— they’re leaders.
Ken’s talents go beyond the book. With 20 years of experience in graphic design, he turned to full-time art in 2023, creating beautiful portraits of people, pets, homes, and small businesses—he also takes custom requests! He hopes to expand his work by creating similar books for other NJ towns. You can explore his work and book at Studionumbernine.net.
One of the most exciting aspects? The Teen Program is preparing students for the Etgar 36 Civil Rights Journey, a meaningful four-day trip that takes them to key historical sites in the Southern U.S. Along the way, they’ll learn about the Civil Rights Movement, visiting places connected to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The trip also covers topics such as the struggles of African Americans to gain equality in the 1950s and ‘60s and how Jews were involved in the Civil Rights struggle. For more information call 973-994-3950.

CULTIVATING COMMUNITY AND SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH THE FARM & FORK SOCIETY
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
SSince its inception in 2008, Melissa Goldberg’s Farm & Fork Society has been a well-loved community-supported agriculture initiative, offering members access to fresh, organic produce sourced from local farms. What started as a small Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group in her garage has grown into a thriving wholesale buying club, embodying her passion for food sustainability and transparency.
The Short Hills resident’s journey began with her desire to know where her food came from. As a self-described foodie with a plot in the local community garden, she found joy in supporting local farmers and promoting healthy eating. “I wanted to have a direct connection to the source of my food,” Melissa explains, reflecting on her early days. What started with 30 people picking up produce in her garage quickly expanded to over 100 members, moving to larger spaces and evolving over time.
Today, Farm & Fork Society operates as a wholesale buying club, offering bi-weekly access to a wide range of organic produce, dairy, honey, meat, eggs, beverages, and more. Members can place orders every other week based on availability, skipping the commitment of traditional CSAs while still enjoying the benefits of fresh, farm-sourced goods. Most of the products come from the Lancaster Cooperative, a network of farms that prioritize organic and sustainable practices.
One of the unique aspects of Farm & Fork Society is the club’s flexibility. Members only pay for what they order, and there’s no seasonal fee. Melissa takes orders in advance, purchases the necessary amounts, and portions out the goods to avoid waste. This model not only ensures members receive exactly what they need but also minimizes the environmental impact of food waste. Melissa emphasizes that food transparency, supporting local farms, and practicing sustainability are at the heart of what makes Farm & Fork Society special.
Melissa’s love for food extends beyond her work with Farm & Fork Society. Her deep connection to food culture and sustainability has inspired her to travel, exploring different culinary traditions worldwide. Through these experiences, she believes people can gain a better understanding of each other.
Though the initiative is not driven by profit, its impact is significant. Farm & Fork Society is a testament to Melissa’s dedication to food sustainability, healthy eating, and community building. Whether it’s through her support of local farms or her efforts to help the community eat healthier, Melissa Goldberg’s work ensures that Farm & Fork Society is not just about food— it’s about nourishing both people and the planet.

PODCAST SPREADS SUNSHINE
Celebrating Good Vibes and Great People
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
AAt the height of the pandemic, Kate Cherichello Tente found herself, like so many others, stuck inside her New York City apartment, feeling weighed down by the constant stream of negative news. As a performer, she was used to being in front of an audience, but suddenly, her creative outlets had dried up. Kate decided to turn her situation into something positive— something that would uplift others as much as it did her.
With a camera and a lot of optimism, she began sharing feel-good stories about people doing good in the world. What started as a personal project to lift her own spirits quickly grew into a podcast that would go on to touchthousandsof lives. “Be The Good with Kate” was born, a platform dedicated to shining a spotlight on the everyday heroes who are often overlooked but who make the world a brighter place.
Over the course of the podcast’s journey, Kate has interviewed over 120 guests, each one bringing their own unique and inspiring story to the table. Her guest list ranges from nonprofit founders and small business owners to people who have overcome great personal challenges to give back to their communities. One week, she might be chatting with her own kindergarten teacher about the impact of education, and the next, she’s talking to a former inmate who now hires and supports other former inmates as they rebuild their lives.
The diversity of the people Kate interviews is part of what makes her podcast so engaging. “I’ve talked to people from all over the world,” Kate says with excitement. “I’ve interviewed someone who started a choir for people with aphasia, a nutritionist who helps postpartum moms, and a hospital clown from Belgium. The range is incredible, and I’m constantly amazed by the impact these people are making.”
Each episode of “Be The Good with Kate” is a celebration of positivity, hope, and the human spirit. Some episodes
are as short as 12 minutes, while others stretch to nearly an hour, but no matter the length, each conversation is filled with heart and inspiration. Whether it’s a story about someone running a nonprofit or an individual making small but significant changes in their own life and the lives of others, Kate’s podcast serves as a beacon of light in a sometimes-dark world.
Kate recently relocated from New York City to Madison, New Jersey, where
she continues to juggle her roles as a performer, podcast host, and personal trainer—all while adjusting to life as a new mom. The podcast is a way she’s giving back, and she hopes it will continue to grow and reach even more listeners.
Tune in to “Be The Good with Kate” for your weekly dose of good vibes and heartwarming stories. You can find the podcast atkatecherichello.com/bethegood or on all major podcast platforms.

Life Teaching Photography Now On The Road
STORY AND PORTRAIT
BY DAN EPSTEIN
RRetiring from over 30 years in public school education as a high school Photography teacher at 58, Montclair resident Jay Seldin gave into the urge to travel which had been a longtime interest. And travel he did. A lot. His first big photographic expedition in 2006 was to China. People saw the images he made on his travels and wanted to travel with him… and 2008, saw the birth of a second career, leading photographic workshops to far flung places. In the beginning, working with the International Center of Photography, Seldin led workshop trips on their behalf. But he soon realized that he could do it on his own, and offer travelers a much more cost effective trip while also being flexible enough to design the workshops to his co-travelers interests. That was the start of CPE Photo Workshops.
While he often travels the US on his own with one friend in tow, his passport is very full. He’s taken people to Cuba 15 times since 2009, and likewise taken groups to Burma, India, Ireland, Scotland, South East Asia, Egypt, South Africa, and as we write this, with a group, he’s on his way to Morocco.
Coffee Pot Quilters, Beford, PA, is a photograph made while traveling the Lincoln Highway captured in 2022, in Bedford, PA. Seldin originally stopped to photograph a small building that
looked like a coffee pot. Purely by luck a group of octogenarian quilters were working inside the building and beckoned him in to join them. An original print of this photograph is currently on display at the Montclair Art Museum in an exhibit sponsored by the NJ Council of the Arts.
While walking on the street in Mandalay during a workshop, Seldin smelled garlic roasting and followed his nose and caught this image of locals roasting garlic that had been grown locally and washed in the river.
Garlic Roasters, Mandalay, Myanmar, 2015.
Likewise, during a similar morning stroll in Burma Seldin happened upon a group of novice monks who were out collecting alms. People would give them rice or other foods. There was a pecking order, he says. The monks at the front of the line got the better donations, and eventually the monks in the back would move up. Morning Alms, Bagan, Mandala, Burma, 2016.

The Transformative EXPERIENCE of Summer Camps
Fun, Friendships, and Personal Growth
CCamps offer children an incredible opportunity to forge new friendships, enhance their social skills, and create lasting bonds. Within the vibrant atmosphere of camp, kids learn to cooperate and communicate effectively, working together in teams that foster a deep sense of community and belonging—elements that are crucial for their emotional and social development.
Having the chance to spend time away from home allows children to cultivate their independence and build confidence. In the nurturing environment of a camp, they navigate decision-making, tackle problem-solving challenges, and learn to manage their own needs, contributing to their overall growth.
Many summer camps are rich in outdoor adventures and physical activities, encouraging children to stay active and healthy. This engagement not only combats the monotony of summer boredom but also nurtures a lifelong appreciation for the beauty of nature and the great outdoors.
Vermont Skiing Trip

• XATIVA, The Castle, and Market Plaza
Summer camps offer a diverse array of programs, from captivating arts and crafts sessions to exhilarating sports and innovative science experiments. This eclectic exposure enables children to explore new hobbies and uncover hidden talents they might never have considered exploring independently.
Even though summer represents a break from traditional schooling, many camps thoughtfully weave educational elements into their activities. This intentional blending helps combat the summer learning slide, keeping kids mentally stimulated and engaged.
Attending camp is a gateway to unique and treasured memories that enrich a child’s life. From the crackling warmth of campfire stories to the laughter shared during group activities, these experiences often become some of the most cherished memories of childhood.
Moreover, summer camp is a remarkable setting for children to meet peers from various backgrounds, encouraging them to broaden their horizons and develop a deeper understanding of diversity.

Orthodontics Beyond Aesthetics
MMany people think braces or Invisalign are just about looks—but there’s so much more to it! While a beautiful smile can be life-changing, orthodontic care also brings significant health benefits that go beyond aesthetics. Discovering how orthodontic treatment can enhance your dental health can be important in making informed decisions for yourself and your family.
Orthodontic treatment is fundamentally about achieving optimal oral health. Misaligned teeth can lead to a host of problems, such as difficulties in maintaining oral hygiene. Crooked teeth can create hard-to-reach areas where plaque and food particles gather, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Straightening teeth through orthodontic care makes it easier to clean them effectively, which promotes longterm dental health.
Another significant benefit of orthodontics is improving bite function. An improper bite—whether it’s an overbite, underbite, or crossbite—can cause uneven wear on teeth, leading to chipping or cracking over time. By correcting these bite issues, orthodontic treatment can alleviate pain, prevent further issues, and enhance overall oral function.
At Sacks Orthodontics, patients can expect top-tier care from experienced, board-certified orthodontists, Dr. Eric Sacks and Dr. Vidhi Shah. Their dedicated team provides comprehensive treatment plans tailored to each individual’s needs, so you can trust that your family is in the best hands.
Sacks Orthodontics takes pride in being the #1 provider of Invisalign and Lightforce in the state of New Jersey. This position is a testament to their expertise and commitment to patient outcomes. With a profound understanding of these advanced technologies, they use the latest tools to deliver optimal results for their patients.
Invisalign offers a discreet and comfortable way for you or your child to straighten their teeth, while Lightforce provides fully customized 3D-printed braces that ensure a perfect fit. As leaders in these technologies, Sacks Orthodontics is dedicated to staying ahead of the curve, guaranteeing that each patient receives.
personalized care, convenient treatment, and exceptional results. Their passion for excellence truly sets them apart, enabling them to meet the diverse needs of New Jersey families with precision and care.

NAVIGATING STRESS, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
TThe holiday season, often seen as joyful, can ironically bring stress, anxiety, and depression for many. Recognizing these challenges is essential for managing them. Below are common triggers for these feelings.
Financial Pressure: The expectation to buy gifts, host parties, and travel can strain budgets, leading to guilt or anxiety.
Family Dynamics: Gatherings may heighten feelings of inadequacy, especially for those experiencing loneliness or complicated relationships.
Loss: For those grieving, holidays can evoke painful memories, making joy feel distant.
Busy Schedules: The rush of preparations can lead to stress and burnout.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Shorter days and less sunlight may exacerbate depressive symptoms.
Recognizing signs of stress is the first step to managing them. Set realistic expectations and prioritize quality time with loved ones. Budget wisely, considering handmade gifts or experiences. Practice self-care—make time for exercise, meditation, or quiet moments. Stay connected with supportive friends or family and limit social media use to reduce comparisons.
If feelings of anxiety or depression are overwhelming, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support and coping strategies.

REVOLUTIONIZING MEMORY CARE
TThe Memory Center is a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility where doctors utilize comprehensive care and innovative solutions for people experiencing memory and cognitive challenges. The boardcertified physicians, including neurologist Dr. Michael Heublum, internist Dr. Jeffrey Shenfeld, and an entire staff of highly trained technologists, complete a full range of testing and create a unique, customized therapy plan for each patient.
Dr. Shenfeld explains the Center’s philosophy: “We understand that cognitive decline is the potential result of a wide array of underlying medical issues. Knowing and addressing your risk factors is how we can be proactive in this fight. The earlier you are aware of possible genetic predispositions, and the sooner you take care of chronic conditions, the more control you have over neurodegenerative disease.” Dr. Shenfeld elaborates: “Our therapeutic strategy incorporates not only traditional methods of treating chronic conditions such as
Vibrant
insomnia, stress-related changes, and insulin resistance, but also includes integrative medicine, which addresses changes in eating, sleeping, and lifestyle in general. We focus on you as a complete individual, not a symptom alone.”
This is a revolutionary time in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, significant advances have been made in diagnosing Alzheimer’s, including a combination of laboratory and imaging tests. New treatment options have emerged, including antibody infusions and non-invasive treatments. At the Memory Center, the doctors and staff understand the challenges individuals and families face with memory impairments. From early detection and diagnostic evaluations to personalized treatment plans and
ongoing support, the team is committed to enhancing cognitive health and improving quality of life.

If It’s to Be… It’s Up to Me!
BY BARRY FARBER
WWe’ve all heard the saying… There’s no “I” in team. But I don’t want to confuse this message with teamwork and collaboration. Those are both important. You’ve read in many previous columns the idea that not only do we become what we think about but just as important we also become who we surround ourselves with. So don’t get me wrong, there are many people who I work with and depend on that make a huge difference in outcomes and results. What I’m talking about is when your goals are not moving in the direction you’d like and how to take responsibility and move them yourself. We do need quality people around us to contribute to the overall goals, but today’s Diamond Minds is about pushing the needle so there is no option for failure. No excuses that it’s someone else’s fault. Now it’s time to get it done. Personal willpower, discipline, determination, passion and purpose make things happen.
Here are a few of the ways to make a personal commitment to accomplish your goals and dreams:
Keep your passion and enthusiasm strong.
Make sure deep down you believe in what you’re doing. Not only do you believe in what you’re doing, but that there is tremendous value for you and others in the long run. Because this belief is what will fuel the fire when you get those no’s, rejections and obstacles.
Stop giving a s&@$ about what other people think.
When you’re working on your goals and dreams there are people that will try to diminish them. That’s just part of life. They will tell you that you’re nuts, that it will never work or maybe ignore you when you ask for help or advice. And remember, do what you want to do, say what you want to say, because those who matter don’t mind, and those who do mind don’t matter.
The
first part of reaching your goal is having one.
Write it down. Write down your action plan and specific steps so they are in front of you every single day. If it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind.
Barry Farber
Know
your subject well.
Read everything you can that will educate you on the pathway you’re exploring. Dive deep into those who have done what you’re looking to do. Mentors, wise advisors love to give back and also get a kick out of pulling others up who have been where they’ve been. Never be afraid to reach out to someone who you might think is unreachable. And if you have the passion in your message that I mentioned in #1 they will see that and respond most of the time.
Professional tenacity is the key.
Today I helped a client breakthrough to a large account that took months to gain access. There were many little things that were done to secure this big meeting like calling to the top (The CEO), following up with emails and texts showing that we did our homework and research on their company and mission statement. Always following up with something of value that the prospect finds helpful. As my client said; “The secret was to be pleasantly persistent.”
If it’s to be, it’s up to me attitude requires a bullet proof belief in yourself and in your passion. And never forget, whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.
