Chasing the Sky: How a Livingston Teen’s Pet Business is Funding His Pilot Dreams
Nikhil Rochlani, a senior at Livingston High School, has been pursuing his dream of becoming a pilot since eighth grade. In order to to raise funds for his private pilot license (PPL), he started a dog-walking and pet sitting business called “Happy Pets.” So far, he has saved $8,800 of the $20,000 needed. This enterprising youth also balances two other jobs to earn extra income—working at a local pizza restaurant and working at polling stations.
Nikhil’s passion for flying began in childhood, and after visiting cockpits on family vacations and taking his first introductory flight, he was hooked. He plans to major in Aeronautical Science in college, with a minor in business or marketing, aiming to become a commercial pilot. Determined to self-fund his PPL, Nikhil exemplifies hard work and perseverance and is well on his way to reaching the skies. Happy Pets can be reached at 973-840-9116.
inventions themselves—like writing on papyrus or assembling a working light bulb.
Karen, a biology teacher, and Byron, a graphic designer, carefully selected lesser-known inventors from various cultural backgrounds, including Egypt, China, and the U.S. The Greens are thrilled that the series is now available at Arena STEM in Paramus, and they hope to expand to other local stores soon. A Livingston Native’s Horror Stories Come to
Life
Livingston native Brian M. Wixson, an actor and screenwriter, is turning heads with his self-published Civil War horror screenplayturned-book, Memorial Day. Collaborating with fellow writer Rob Nelson, Brian crafted a chilling tale about a regiment of Confederate soldiers cursed to guard a stash of gold in the afterlife. Their creativity stemmed from a simple idea to write a horror script based on an overlooked holiday, and Memorial Day was the perfect choice.
Recently, the duo also released another book, Aberration. Set in Valle Cross, NC, Aberration follows a group of townspeople fighting off an alien entity that crashes near a local amusement park. With Brian’s acting experience and Nelson’s writing talents, the pair hopes to turn these screenplays into feature films. Both publications are available on Amazon.
Brian also recently turned the autobiography, Why, into a script and is looking to be shot in London next year.
Exploring Civil Rights and Jewish Values on a Four-Day Journey!
Looking for a teen program that’s more than just another extracurricular?
Temple B’nai Abraham’s Teen Program is shaking things up by blending leadership, community service, and hands-on learning with a Jewish twist. This dynamic program, based at the temple located in Livingston, gives teens the chance to serve on committees, learning about philanthropy, Jewish communal service, and finding their own political and social justice voice.
From organizing events to making a real impact, these teens aren’t just participants—they’re leaders.
One of the most exciting aspects? The Teen Program is preparing students for the Etgar 36 Civil Rights Journey, a meaningful four-day trip that takes them to key historical sites in the Southern U.S. Along the way, they’ll learn about the Civil Rights Movement, visiting places connected to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The trip also covers topics such as the struggles of African Americans to gain equality in the 1950s and ‘60s and how Jews were involved in the Civil Rights struggle. CHAMPIONS: TRANSFORMING SOCIAL SKILLS AND BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
IIn Cedar Grove, a remarkable initiative called Champions is making a significant impact on middle schoolers who need help finding their social footing. Founded by Heather Rossetto-DeLeva, this social club offers a supportive environment for children aged 10 to 14, particularly those with a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). However, Champions is open to any middle schooler looking to improve their social skills or make new friends.
Heather started the group last year after noticing the need for such a community. “My son was a Cedar Grove student who went out of district in sixth grade. He made friends at his new school, but they were spread out all over. I wanted him to have local friends to hang out with,” she explains.
The group meets once a month at Esposito Pizzeria in Cedar Grove, where kids and parents sit at separate tables. During these meetings, the parents plan events for the following month. Activities, held once or twice a month, include outings like gymnastics classes, zoo visits, and video gaming sessions at Gamer’s Grove.
Champions focuses on building social skills through fun and interactive activities. “We play games to get them talking, like Uno or What’s the Meme. I’ve also created my own games with social questions to break the ice,” says Heather. This method has proven effective, with the kids gradually becoming more confident and independent in their interactions.
The group has grown beyond Cedar Grove, welcoming members from Woodland Park, Roseland, and Verona. The group’s inclusive nature has attracted a diverse mix of children, some of whom are on the autism spectrum or struggle with anxiety. “The boys in the group have really bonded. When given a choice, they always pick Champions over other activities,” Heather notes.
Heather plans to expand the Champions program to include elementary and high school students, with volunteers running age-specific events. This fall, she will continue collaborating with Rhino Den, a sports performance company in Fairfield, for functional training sessions tailored to the group’s needs.
The benefits of Champions extend to the parents as well. “It’s peace of mind knowing their kids are making friends. Plus, the parents enjoy getting out and connecting with others who understand their situation,” Heather shares.
As part of the Champions program, from left: Andrew Mingari (Roseland), Anthony DeLeva (Cedar Grove), and Joey Barillari (Cedar Grove) participate in a customized functional training session at Rhino Den, a sports performance company in Fairfield.
Heather is open to helping others start similar groups in their communities. “Anyone in Essex County can join or start their own Champions group. I’m here to support them,” she says.
As Champions continues to grow, Heather’s vision remains clear: to provide a safe, fun, and supportive space for kids to develop their social skills and build lasting friendships.

TEENS’ BREAKFAST BRIGADE is Filling Bowls and Changing Lives
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
WWhen Owen and Zach Gershwin were just 12, the pandemic opened their eyes to a harsh reality—food insecurity wasn’t only happening elsewhere, it was right in their own backyard. As picky eaters with a particular fondness for cereal, the twins from Livingston decided to make breakfast their battleground in the fight against hunger. And thus, the Breakfast Brigade was born.
“Our love for breakfast foods and the realization that so many people start their day without anything to eat was our call to action,” says Zach. “We couldn’t fix the whole problem, but we could help fill one bowl at a time.”
The concept is simple but powerful. The brothers rally their friends, family, and community to donate breakfast foods like cereal, shelf-stable milk, muffins, and breakfast bars. With Amazon wishlists, a growing social media presence, friends, and family, the Brigade has delivered over 50,000 servings of breakfast items to those in need.
Their impact has stretched beyond their hometown. Owen and Zach have supported organizations like Tony’s Kitchen in Montclair and the 13th Avenue School in Newark. They’ve even taken the Brigade on the road, partnering with food pantries and shelters in Massachusetts, including the Berkshire Dream Center Food Pantry, in Pittsfield, Mass., which is located near Camp Winadu, where they spend their summers. In this drive, they collected over 6,000 servings of breakfast foods.
The name “Breakfast Brigade” was inspired by their years at camp, where they participated in a collaborative “bucket brigade” event. “It’s about teamwork and everyone doing their part,” Owen explains. “We wanted the same community spirit to drive our project.”
The twins have big goals for the future. They plan to grow the Breakfast Brigade, amass over 100,000 servings by the end of this year, and eventually hit their goal of one million servings. With junior year at Newark Academy keeping them busy, Owen and Zach still find time to keep their initiative alive through Amazon Wishlist drives, community events, and engaging their family, friends, and peers.
The brothers dream of one day expanding beyond New Jersey with ambassadors in other states helping to bring breakfast to communities across the country. Their message is simple: breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and everyone deserves it. The Gershwin twins and their Breakfast Brigade are doing their part to ensure that bowls stay full, one donation at a time.

The Root Cause of CHRONIC PAIN
INFLAMMATION is an integral part of your body’s DEFENSE SYSTEM
.
You twist your ankle stepping off the curb and the area around the injury immediately begins to swell and fill with heat. Blood circulation increases and an army of white blood cells rushes the area to ward off the perceived threat and prevent further injury. The same happens if you cut your foot on a sharp shell while walking the beach, when you get the flu from your children or grandchildren, or if you bump your head on a cabinet door that your spouse forgot to shut.
In acute doses, inflammation is a vital immune response that harnesses the potential to protect us. So why is inflammation always getting a bad rap?
“Unfortunately, this immune response sometimes occurs when it shouldn’t and for longer periods of times than is necessary,” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair. “Autoimmune disorders, untreated injuries, exposure to toxins - all of these can be causes for chronic inflammation.
The biggest culprit though, is stress.”
Janet D. of Livingston sought treatment at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine after several doctors and specialists were unable to treat what she thought was run-of-the-mill arthritis. “I hurt all the time and while I’ve always managed to get out of bed, some days it felt like getting up in the morning was going to be the hardest thing I did in this life.”
Before she consulted with Dr. Aleksandra, Janet had tried prescription medications, steroid injections, and physical therapy with little to no success. “I was at the end of my rope. My husband was at the end of his. He is the one who first read about Dr. Aleksandra and how she is using acupuncture and ozone therapy to treat pain and fatigue. The only thing I had to lose at that point was him. He’s been so kind and patient through this whole ordeal, but I could tell this was just as hard on him as it was on me. I mean who wants to watch while the person they love suffers nearly every day.”
The staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine understands that the chronic pain and complicated conditions they specialize in treating are often a family affair and encourages loved ones to accompany patients to their consultations, even treatments. Dr. Aleksandra explains, “It’s very rare that the kind of pain our patients suffer from is felt alone. It causes disappointment when they have to cancel plans with their family. It causes resentment when they don’t feel well enough to do the things their spouse wants to do. It causes frustration when they are unable to play with their grandchildren. So, when our patients have a support system on their healing journey, it greatly increases their chances of success, of getting back to living their life.”
Having a loved one present has also proven to be beneficial during the consultation process. “As we discussed Janet’s medical history and delved into when her pain and fatigue started, her husband mentioned that it was around the time they lost their son,” shares Dr. Aleksandra.
“It’s just not something I normally discuss.” tells Janet. “Especially with people I just met. There are still so many emotions surrounding that day.”
In Janet’s case, this turned out to be vital information. As Dr. Aleksandra shared, stress can be a major contributor to chronic inflammation and the emotional turmoil from losing a loved one, especially a child, is quite simply unfathomable. Studies have shown that people who have recently lost a loved one have inflammation
levels 54% higher than average. And when you consider that chronic inflammation is at the root of major health disorders like heart disease, cancer, obesity, and autoimmune conditions, it’s safe to say that you can quite literally die from a broken heart.
Of course, inflammation caused by stress goes way beyond grief and loss. The staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine have seen chronic inflammation in patients with high stress jobs, couples who are going through a divorce, and even people in the process of building their dream home. The body reacts to stress by releasing chemicals and hormones that are meant to be short term but when that stress is unmanageable or continues for long periods it can cause increased inflammation and a myriad of other chronic health problems.
Janet has been a patient of Dr. Aleksandra for almost three months and couldn’t wait for the opportunity to sit down and share her success story. “I never understood how tiny needles and oxygen can make such a huge difference, but at this point I’m so happy it doesn’t matter… Dr. Aleksandra saved my life, and my marriage! I’m still grieving and l’m not sure that will ever go away but the treatments, the staff—it’s reduced my physical pain, so I finally have the energy to face life, to show up.”

EXPERIENCE LAND BACK: A Community Celebration of Contemporary Native Art in Six Tiny Galleries
IIn honor of National Native American Heritage Month and Interwoven Power: Native Knowledge/Native Art at the Montclair Art Museum, Tiny Gallery Montclair is introducing LAND BACK, a unique art takeover celebrating Indigenous culture and the museum’s exhibit. Curated by Jennifer Ley, this captivating event showcases the works of seven contemporary Native artists installed in six Tiny Galleries across Montclair, Glen Ridge, and Bloomfield, New Jersey—part of Lenapehoking, the ancestral homelands of the Lenape people.
Francesca Moore of Montclair, who founded Tiny Gallery, says, “It’s definitely a community builder, and I’ve never had a project that received such instant, positive reactions— people just get it and love it. I’ve had people tell me it’s a special part of their day, whether it’s passing by on a dog walk or even
traveling from far away to see the gallery. The momentum it’s gaining across towns is incredible, and to now be collaborating with the museum is just stunning. They’ve welcomed us so warmly, and we’re thrilled to support them.’”
Tiny Gallery’s mission is to make creating, exhibiting, and collecting art more inclusive by disrupting the idea of what fine art can be. Their network of compact box-sized art galleries, similar to Little Free Libraries, live on front lawns, in public spaces, and at education centers, featuring small works, ranging from two to four inches, by local and national artists.

Transform Your LIVING SPACE
R
Rearranging your furniture is a fantastic way to transform your living space, breathing new life into familiar surroundings. Inject your personality into the space and create an environment that feels as good as it looks!
Assess the Space
Begin by thoroughly inspecting the room. Pay attention to the placement of windows, doors, and architectural features. Consider how natural light flows through the space and changes throughout the day.
Create a Focal Point
Identify a striking feature in the room, such as a cozy fireplace, a stunning piece of artwork, or a large window with an enticing view. Arrange your furniture around this focal point to draw the eye and create a sense of harmony in the layout.
Think About Flow
As you contemplate furniture placement, prioritize the flow of movement. Ensure clear pathways for easy access and allow guests to navigate effortlessly without feeling cramped. Strive for a comfortable balance that invites conversation and interaction.
Mix and Match
Embrace the beauty of eclectic design by combining different styles, textures, and colors. Pair contemporary pieces with vintage finds or juxtapose soft fabrics with sleek metals to create a visually intriguing and personalized space.
Add Layers
Enhance the atmosphere with decorative elements. Incorporate area rugs to define spaces, introduce varying light sources such as floor lamps or sconces, and adorn surfaces with plants and personal artifacts. These layers add depth and warmth, making the room feel more inviting.
Try New Layouts
Don’t shy away from experimentation. Move furniture around and visualize different configurations. Try placing sofas at angles or creating intimate seating clusters. You might stumble upon a layout that fosters better conversation or enhances the room’s functionality.
Leak Proofing
Windows for Winter Weather
As winter approaches, it is essential to ensure that your home is prepared to face the chill. A common area in households that allows cold air to seep in is through windows. Leak-proofing your windows enhances comfort and can lead to significant savings on heating bills. Before making any changes, inspect your windows thoroughly. Look for gaps, cracks, and signs of wear in the caulking or weather stripping. Pay close attention to the areas where the window meets the frame; even the smallest openings can let in cold air.
Weatherstripping is a simple, cost-effective solution. Various materials, such as foam and vinyl, work well. Remove old weather stripping, clean the window frame, and cut the new material to size. Stick it along the frame, ensuring a snug fit. Caulking effectively seals leaks, especially with high-quality exterior caulk. After removing old caulk, apply the new caulk with a caulking gun, filling gaps and smoothing for a neat finish.
For added protection, consider a window film insulation kit. This plastic film creates an insulating barrier against drafts. Cut it to size, attach it with double-sided tape, and use a hair dryer to shrink the film tight. For a quick solution, use draft stoppers along the window sill or base. You can easily make your own by filling a fabric tube with rice or beans.
Ensure that you maintain your windows throughout the winter. Regularly check for signs of wear, reseat, or replace weather stripping and caulk as needed, and always check the condition of your glass.

Creatively Display Your Favorite Photos
Family photos, vacation pictures, candid snapshots of friends and family – they’re often visual representations of some of your most treasured moments, so it’s likely you’ll want to give them some special treatment. Consider these easy and affordable ways to showcase some of your favorite photos.
Variations on a theme
You don’t have to have a whole set of matching frames to create a unified look. Gather frames of different sizes, shapes and textures then paint them all the same color. White, cream or black are colors that let the eye focus on the photograph. Then when you group them together, you’ve got a cohesive display without everything being the same.
Location, location, location
Photos don’t always need to be on a wall or shelf. Try hanging a series of related photos on the back of a door or between windows.
A new use for old frames
Take a large frame with no back and paint it. Then take two pieces of ribbon or wire and attach them to the back of the frame, dividing it into three sections. Attach small photos to the ribbon or wire with mini clothes pins or other small clips.
New frames out of old windows
Fit a photo mat inside each pane of an old window. Attach photos to the backs of the mats and you have a vintage frame.
Map it out
Showcase favorite travel photos by covering a mat with a map from one of your vacation spots. Just trim the map to fit your mat, tape it to the back and insert your picture.
Get it on canvas
Treat your photos like the works of art they are by having them printed on artist canvas. There are a variety of online vendors that let you choose the size and photo treatment to create a unique piece for your personal gallery.
Put it all on the table
Add to your stylish decor and protect your furniture all at the same time by making your own photo coasters.

JAY SELDIN
Life Teaching Photography Now On The Road
STORY AND PORTRAIT
BY DAN EPSTEIN
RRetiring from over 30 years in public school education as a high school Photography teacher at 58, Montclair resident Jay Seldin gave into the urge to travel which had been a longtime interest. And travel he did. A lot. His first big photographic expedition in 2006 was to China. People saw the images he made on his travels and wanted to travel with him… and 2008, saw the birth of a second career, leading photographic workshops to far flung places. In the beginning, working with the International Center of Photography, Seldin led workshop trips on their behalf. But he soon realized that he could do it on his own, and offer travelers a much more cost effective trip while also being flexible enough to design the workshops to his co-travelers interests. That was the start of CPE Photo Workshops.
While he often travels the US on his own with one friend in tow, his passport is very full. He’s taken people to Cuba 15 times since 2009, and likewise taken groups to Burma, India, Ireland, Scotland, South East Asia, Egypt, South Africa, and as we write this, with a group, he’s on his way to Morocco.
Coffee Pot Quilters, Beford, PA, is a photograph made while traveling the Lincoln Highway captured in 2022, in Bedford, PA. Seldin originally stopped to photograph a small building that
looked like a coffee pot. Purely by luck a group of octogenarian quilters were working inside the building and beckoned him in to join them. An original print of this photograph is currently on display at the Montclair Art Museum in an exhibit sponsored by the NJ Council of the Arts.
While walking on the street in Mandalay during a workshop, Seldin smelled garlic roasting and followed his nose and caught this image of locals roasting garlic that had been grown locally and washed in the river.
Garlic Roasters, Mandalay, Myanmar, 2015.
Likewise, during a similar morning stroll in Burma Seldin happened upon a group of novice monks who were out collecting alms. People would give them rice or other foods. There was a pecking order, he says. The monks at the front of the line got the better donations, and eventually the monks in the back would move up. Morning Alms, Bagan, Mandala, Burma, 2016.

A TONI’S KITCHEN Fighting Suburban Food Insecurity
PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
At Toni’s Kitchen in St. Luke’s Church, Montclair, NJ, they have a unique mission: to ensure everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can access nutritious food. Executive Director Anne Mernin emphasizes, “We are rethinking food insecurity in the suburbs. The issues are structural, requiring long-term solutions.”
During the pandemic, Toni’s Kitchen experienced a significant increase in the number of families in need, shining a light on the financial fragility in suburban areas. Their innovative approach integrates healthy food into community spaces like after-school programs and summer camps, ensuring children are well-fed and alleviating family financial burdens.
Toni’s Kitchen partners with around 60 community organizations, including mentoring programs, preschools, and libraries. They run neighborhood mobile markets with a farmers market feel, offering fresh groceries in local gathering spots like Bloomfield, Montclair, and West Orange.
The organization also operates a food truck providing cooked-to-order meals and a home delivery program for seniors and families with chronic health issues.
“Our food truck is a fun way to provide healthy meals, and it’s very well-received,” says Mernin.
At Toni’s Kitchen, community support is the driving force, with over 2,000 active volunteers playing a crucial role. “These volunteers, who come from all
walks of life, contribute in various ways, from driving and cleaning to running the pantry and neighborhood market,” states Mernin. Their dedication and hard work are the backbone of the organization, making them an integral part of the mission to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.
Donations can be made on their website, and they encourage the community to support them through food drives or by donating home garden produce. “The work is energizing. It’s amazing to see how much people care about ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food,” Mernin says. Support is crucial in the mission to combat food insecurity. The Transformative EXPERIENCE of Summer Camps
Fun, Friendships, and Personal Growth
CCamps offer children an incredible opportunity to forge new friendships, enhance their social skills, and create lasting bonds. Within the vibrant atmosphere of camp, kids learn to cooperate and communicate effectively, working together in teams that foster a deep sense of community and belonging—elements that are crucial for their emotional and social development.
Having the chance to spend time away from home allows children to cultivate their independence and build confidence. In the nurturing environment of a camp, they navigate decision-making, tackle problem-solving challenges, and learn to manage their own needs, contributing to their overall growth.
Many summer camps are rich in outdoor adventures and physical activities, encouraging children to stay active and healthy. This engagement not only combats the monotony of summer boredom but also nurtures a lifelong appreciation for the beauty of nature and the great outdoors.

Summer camps offer a diverse array of programs, from captivating arts and crafts sessions to exhilarating sports and innovative science experiments. This eclectic exposure enables children to explore new hobbies and uncover hidden talents they might never have considered exploring independently.
Even though summer represents a break from traditional schooling, many camps thoughtfully weave educational elements into their activities. This intentional blending helps combat the summer learning slide, keeping kids mentally stimulated and engaged.
Attending camp is a gateway to unique and treasured memories that enrich a child’s life. From the crackling warmth of campfire stories to the laughter shared during group activities, these experiences often become some of the most cherished memories of childhood.
Moreover, summer camp is a remarkable setting for children to meet peers from various backgrounds, encouraging them to broaden their horizons and develop a deeper understanding of diversity.

A SMALL SCHOOL WITH A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Taking a whole-child approach in education
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
OOur Lady of the Lake creates an environment that promotes kindness and spiritual growth. We are a school rooted in tradition and academic excellence, yet we value progressive ideas, creative teaching methods, and up-to-date practices. Our approach to Catholic education is innovative and forward-thinking, offering personalized education while maintaining a small school’s close-knit, communityoriented atmosphere.
“It’s really a whole child approach,” says Principal Tom Conroy. “We work really hard as a team to instill in them not only the Catholic values that they learn from their parents and from their parish, but then we piggyback on that and move it into our educational piece as well.”
The school is modern and up to date with its interactive Promethean Boards in every classroom, Chromebooks for each student, and clubs, after-school programs, and an arts lab that focus on STEM learning. Teachers take advantage of professional development to enable them to meet each child’s individual learning style.
“Our Lady of the Lake School is a small, inclusive and loving environment that really is the cornerstone of not only just the Catholic faith, because we have non-Catholics here too, but the values that we hold as a school and as a parish community,” states Tom.

ROCK ON!
At The School of Rock Montclair
BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL
At the School of Rock Montclair, students of all ages learn music fundamentals and performance techniques learning to play iconic rock songs. Instructors are professional musicians with extensive performance backgrounds.
Kevin March, General Manager, explains the School of Rock’s Performance Program. Designed for students ages 8-18, its goal is to help students gain the skills and confidence needed to perform live at local venues and support their personal musical journey. Many students go on to study at premier music schools and colleges. The Performance Program uses their patented Song-First Method. It consists of a weekly ninety-minute group session where students are put into bands for rehearsal. They also have a weekly private lesson with their instructor to work on the songs they’re cast in. “This song-first approach allows the students to learn the musical components and performance elements of each song,” states March. After rehearsing for a three-or-four month season, students perform live at local venues. The next Performance Program concerts will be in January 2024 at Just Jakes and Pineapple Express Barbeque in Montclair.
The School of Rock offers three seasons of Performance Programs—Fall, Spring, and Summer. Each season uses different themes, with varying levels of students and prepares students to performance and pursue their musical dreams.

IMPLANTS THAT LAST AND FEEL JUST LIKE REAL TEETH A
DENTIST WHO GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR HIS PATIENTS
BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
DDr. Michael Davidson of Edgemont Dental Arts recently obtained his dental implant credentials from the American Board of Oral Implantology (ABOI), and is now a board certified Implant Surgeon, allowing him to safely and comfortably place single and multiple and full mouth dental implants. “The ABOI is the highest credentialing anyone can possibly get in dentistry. This credentialing really helps me solidify my commitment to my patients to give them something outstanding,” states Dr. Davidson.
“I saw the difference that implant dentistry can make for patients and the joy that it brings them when they can get their teeth back. It’s just a tremendous feeling to be able to provide that to my patients,” says Dr Davidson.
Since implant dentistry is on the more expensive side, it’s critical to have highly trained professional perform these procedures. “If you’re going to be spending that kind of money, you want to make sure that the teeth will last a long time.”
In addition to implants and other restorative and cosmetic treatments, Edgemont Dental Arts provides many other services including checkups, teeth cleaning, fillings, teeth whitening, and periodontal maintenance. The practice treats patients of all ages and requirements with integrity and compassion.

TThe Memory Center is a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility where doctors utilize comprehensive care and innovative solutions for people experiencing memory and cognitive challenges. The boardcertified physicians, including neurologist Dr. Michael Heublum, internist Dr. Jeffrey Shenfeld, and an entire staff of highly trained technologists, complete a full range of testing and create a unique, customized therapy plan for each patient.
Dr. Shenfeld explains the Center’s philosophy: “We understand that cognitive decline is the potential result of a wide array of underlying medical issues. Knowing and addressing your risk factors is how we can be proactive in this fight. The earlier you are aware of possible genetic predispositions, and the sooner you take care of chronic conditions, the more control you have over neurodegenerative disease.” Dr. Shenfeld elaborates: “Our therapeutic strategy incorporates not only traditional methods of treating chronic conditions such as insomnia, stress-related changes, and insulin resistance, but also includes integrative medicine, which addresses changes in eating, sleeping, and lifestyle in general. We focus on you as a complete individual, not a symptom alone.”
This is a revolutionary time in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, significant advances have been made in diagnosing Alzheimer’s, including a combination of laboratory and imaging tests. New treatment options have emerged, including antibody infusions and non-invasive treatments. At the Memory Center, the doctors and staff understand the challenges individuals and families face with memory impairments. From early detection and diagnostic evaluations to personalized treatment plans and ongoing support, the team is committed to enhancing cognitive health and improving quality of life.

Gentle Caring Dentistry:
TRANSFORMING SMILES WITH COMPASSIONATE CARE
MMother and daughter Dr. Linda Stone and Dr. Vanna Stone share a dental practice at Gentle Caring Dentistry in Livingston.
Established by Dr. Linda, Gentle Caring Dentistry reflects her lifelong passion for providing quality dental work – from general to cosmetic dentistry – but with compassionate care.
Dr. Vanna joined her mother in practice after completing dental school. “I can never remember a time when I didn’t want to be a dentist. I always respected my mother’s gentle, caring demeanor. That’s how I wanted my dental practice.”
Gentle Caring Dentistry’s goal is to ensure maximum comfort for each patient in a relaxed setting. Further, they believe in educating their patients. “Educating our patients to understand the work we need to do and how we will do it reduces fear. The more knowledge patients have, the more interested they become in selfcare,” remarks Dr. Vanna.
Both dentists concur that the power of a beautiful smile is magical and can transform a person’s life. Dr. Linda recalls a director of a corporation who never smiled. After performing cosmetic work on the director’s misaligned teeth, Dr. Linda saw a changed patient with a beautiful smile and a pleasant personality.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Being passionate about your work and staying abreast of the latest industry developments is vital for a successful business. Says Dr. Linda, “Your work reflects you. Love what you do.”

Heel Pain:
CAUSES AND TREATMENTS FOR PLANTAR FASCIITIS AND ACHILLES TENDONITIS
BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN
Matthew Wachtler, DPM
DDr. Matthew Wachtler, DPM, offers complete care for foot and ankle injuries at Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists. Two of the most common foot ailments he treats in his practice—plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis—involve injuries to the heel. These painful conditions have similar causes and treatments. Plantar fasciitis is caused by harm to the connective tissue that links the heel and toes, while Achilles tendonitis occurs by irritating the tendon at the back of the lower leg.
According to Dr. Wachtler, we must look at the three primary causes of these conditions: lack of support, overuse, and lack of flexibility. Poor, illfitting, or improper shoes are a primary cause. For example, wearing sandals, flip-flops, or going barefoot may lead to heel injuries. The second and third
causes, overuse and strained flexibility of the Achilles and plantar tendons are frequently caused by excessive exercise, resulting in aggravated heel conditions.
Effective treatments for these injuries include stretching the affected area, physical therapy, shock wave treatments to remove scar tissue, and cortisone injections for Plantar fasciitis. These methods, along with the use of antiinflammatory medications and ice treatments, have shown promising results in providing pain relief and promoting recovery.

NAVIGATING STRESS, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
TThe holiday season, often seen as joyful, can ironically bring stress, anxiety, and depression for many. Recognizing these challenges is essential for managing them. Below are common triggers for these feelings.
Financial Pressure: The expectation to buy gifts, host parties, and travel can strain budgets, leading to guilt or anxiety.
Family Dynamics: Gatherings may heighten feelings of inadequacy, especially for those experiencing loneliness or complicated relationships.
Loss: For those grieving, holidays can evoke painful memories, making joy feel distant.
Busy Schedules: The rush of preparations can lead to stress and burnout.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Shorter days and less sunlight may exacerbate depressive symptoms.
Recognizing signs of stress is the first step to managing them. Set realistic expectations and prioritize quality time with loved ones. Budget wisely, considering handmade gifts or experiences. Practice self-care—make time for exercise, meditation, or quiet moments. Stay connected with supportive friends or family and limit social media use to reduce comparisons.
If feelings of anxiety or depression are overwhelming, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support and coping strategies.

SPARK™ ALIGNERS AND SYMETRI™ CLEAR BRACKETS:
An Insight by Dr. Gigi Paralkar of Livingston Family Orthodontics
OOrthodontic advancements have continually reshaped the experience of achieving a healthier, straighter smile. Among the game-changers in this field are the Spark™ Aligners and Symetri™ Clear Bracket systems. Dr. Gigi Paralkar of Livingston Family Orthodontics offers insights into these two unique offerings for patients wishing a more discreet path to a straighter smile.
Spark™ Aligners are designed for more effective and efficient tooth movement compared to the leading aligner brand. Through improved printing resolution and greater surface area of the aligners, there is better contact between the aligners and the teeth. This improved contact leads to shorter treatment times and improved results. For the patient, this translates to a smoother treatment experience with potentially fewer visits. Moreover, Spark ™ Aligners are made using TruGen™ material, which is clearer, more comfortable, and less prone to staining than other aligner brands.
For cases requiring braces, Symetri™ Clear braces offer a more subtle approach to orthodontic treatment. Their virtually invisible appearance is attributed to high-quality, transparent ceramic materials. They are particularly appreciated by those who wish for effective alignment without drawing attention to the treatment itself.
Dr. Gigi emphasizes the importance of individualized treatment. “Every smile is unique, and while Spark ™ Aligners and Symetri™ Clear Bracket systems offer incredible benefits, it’s essential to approach each case with personalized attention,” she states.
In a world where orthodontics continuously evolves, insights from professionals like Dr. Gigi are invaluable. Whether opting for Spark ™ Aligners, Symetri™ Clear Brackets or exploring other avenues, the journey to a radiant smile is a collaborative one between the patient and the orthodontist. At Livingston Family Orthodontics, a smile opens a door.

EMPOWERING WOMEN Through Holistic Healing
WINGS is a cancer support group that meets at the Verona Community Center monthly. It is for women (from any town) who have or have had cancer. WINGS stands for Women Inspiring Nurturing Giving Strength and Support. This is a 501©3 non-profit organization that was started by a group of women in 2010 who met through a holistic nurse at RWJ Barnabas Health / Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center while they were undergoing treatments.
WINGS offers educational programs in the healing arts and group support to help regain emotional, physical, and spiritual health. The programs include educational and holistic topics, focusing on mind, body, and spirit. All monthly programs are free of charge. Their mission is to provide a positive environment for women with any cancer-before, during, or after treatmentto alleviate stress and anxiety through the healing arts. They offer programs like writing to heal, reiki, tai chi, yoga, drumming, music, and meditation. These modalities help heal the whole person.
The first half of each meeting is devoted to sharing a holistic modality with the group. Each month, a different presenter will demonstrate their program. It is a holistic sampler of a sort. The programs are led by people who have made the Healing Arts their passion and graciously share their knowledge and inspiration.
The second half of the evening is dedicated to sharing support, where women may talk with others who have had similar experiences. All are welcome to speak, but there is no pressure if someone wants to sit back and listen. It is a very relaxed and warm atmosphere.
Women diagnosed with cancer are under a great deal of stress and anxiety. Experiencing and learning some new tools to use as simple as breathing meditation, guided imagery, and a gratitude list, or more advanced skills such as reiki, journaling, or body movements, can help restore balance and harmony back into their lives.
The meetings are filled with sharing, laughter, love, and sometimes tears, which are healing. The board members have also written a book called, “Let Me Walk the Journey with You,” which they offer for free to any woman who comes to the group.

If It’s to Be… It’s Up to Me!
BY BARRY FARBER
WWe’ve all heard the saying… There’s no “I” in team. But I don’t want to confuse this message with teamwork and collaboration. Those are both important. You’ve read in many previous columns the idea that not only do we become what we think about but just as important we also become who we surround ourselves with. So don’t get me wrong, there are many people who I work with and depend on that make a huge difference in outcomes and results. What I’m talking about is when your goals are not moving in the direction you’d like and how to take responsibility and move them yourself. We do need quality people around us to contribute to the overall goals, but today’s Diamond Minds is about pushing the needle so there is no option for failure. No excuses that it’s someone else’s fault. Now it’s time to get it done. Personal willpower, discipline, determination, passion and purpose make things happen.
Here are a few of the ways to make a personal commitment to accomplish your goals and dreams:
Keep your passion and enthusiasm strong.
Make sure deep down you believe in what you’re doing. Not only do you believe in what you’re doing, but that there is tremendous value for you and others in the long run. Because this belief is what will fuel the fire when you get those no’s, rejections and obstacles.
Stop giving a s&@$ about what other people think.
When you’re working on your goals and dreams there are people that will try to diminish them. That’s just part of life. They will tell you that you’re nuts, that it will never work or maybe ignore you when you ask for help or advice. And remember, do what you want to do, say what you want to say, because those who matter don’t mind, and those who do mind don’t matter.
The
first part of reaching your goal is having one.
Write it down. Write down your action plan and specific steps so they are in front of you every single day. If it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind.

Know
your subject well.
Read everything you can that will educate you on the pathway you’re exploring. Dive deep into those who have done what you’re looking to do. Mentors, wise advisors love to give back and also get a kick out of pulling others up who have been where they’ve been. Never be afraid to reach out to someone who you might think is unreachable. And if you have the passion in your message that I mentioned in #1 they will see that and respond most of the time.
Professional tenacity is the key.
Today I helped a client breakthrough to a large account that took months to gain access. There were many little things that were done to secure this big meeting like calling to the top (The CEO), following up with emails and texts showing that we did our homework and research on their company and mission statement. Always following up with something of value that the prospect finds helpful. As my client said; “The secret was to be pleasantly persistent.”
If it’s to be, it’s up to me attitude requires a bullet proof belief in yourself and in your passion. And never forget, whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.
