NEUROPATHY BREAKTHROUGH

Our emphasis is difficult to treat chronic conditions: Chronic Pain

Peripheral Neuropathy is often caused by diabetes, chemotherapy or injuries

“It started as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down, anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t feel my foot. The car kept moving forward, and I just couldn’t get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me.”

This tragic story was shared with us by John M., a Millburn resident who has Peripheral Neuropathy. While no one got injured in this accident, John M. had suffered almost every day for eight years with tingling and burning in his feet until numbness set in. Finally, he could no longer feel the brake pedal beneath his foot.

“The first stage is pain.” shares Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. “You feel burning, tingling, sharp pains, or you feel like you’re walking on broken glass. This pain eventually subsides, and the numbness sets in. But, unfortunately, with the numbness comes a lot of other problems.”

Typically, Peripheral Neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms interfere with a person’s ability to live their life. John was now reliant on his wife to drive him around; even the simple pleasure of cruising down to the shore or taking her out to dinner was outside his capabilities. And even more common, John’s general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do other than prescribing him medications to try to ease the pain of his Neuropathy.

That’s where Dr. Aleksandra, and her staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine come in. “About 75% of our current patients come to us suffering from the same condition as Mr. John,” says Dr. Aleksandra.

“They’re in constant pain from Neuropathy, and it prevents them from not only living their lives but more importantly, it prevents them from enjoying it. But, depending on the severity of their nerve damage, we typically see tremendous progress in 3-4 months of treatment. So I like to say we’re in the business of making your golden years golden.”

“I was skeptical at first.” confififides John. My doctor told me there was nothing that they could do, and then, there’s an acupuncturist right in Montclair who tells me she can help. It turns out she was right. After about four months of treatments, I was able to drive myself to my appointments confidently! My wife and I celebrated by buying ourselves a new car!

It’s hard to put into words how incredible this is. Quite frankly, I feel like I got my life back.”

Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine specialize in acupuncture, and it’s a central component of their protocol in treating Neuropathy. However, they also offer a more modern medical solution called ATP Bioresonance therapy™, “NASA originally developed this technology to expedite healing and recovery,” shares Olivia, a patient care coordinator at the clinic. “It’s like watering a plant.

ATP Bioresonance therapy™ stimulates the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerve and provides them the proper nutrients to heal and repair.”

You can learn more about Dr. Aleksandra and Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine by visiting www.SashaAcupuncture.com. If you’re ready to schedule a consultation, please call (973) 444-8932.

Feeding Hope: The Heartwarming Story of Kekoa Foods

Danny Auld and David Fullner, two fathers from West Orange, are not just running a business; they’re on a mission to change how families think about baby food. Their company, Kekoa Foods, provides nutrient-rich, organic meals for little ones and gives back to those less fortunate Since its inception, Kekoa Foods has donated over $125,000 in food and time to charitable organizations, including the Newark YMCA, GRACE and the Maui Food Bank.

Inspired by their prematurely born son, Kekoa, the couple embarked on a journey to create wholesome baby food. Their time in the NICU showed them the importance of quality nutrition, leading them to develop recipes that are nutritious and delicious. Packaged in convenient pouches, their meals feature an eclectic mix of vegetables, herbs, spices, and flavors that appeal to young palates.

Through their products, available at Wegmans, Sprouts Farmers Markets, Amazon, and their website, kekoafoods.com, Danny and David hope to educate families about healthy eating and provide access to quality foods for all.

Livingston Harrison Elementary Students Honored for Philanthropic Achievements

Harrison Elementary School in Livingston received Table to Table’s 2023 Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation Award for Student Philanthropy for their outstanding fundraising efforts in support of the Bag a Lunch, Help a Bunch initiative. The students’ dedication helped raise $1,459.54 to reduce food waste and provide 14,600 meals to food insecure neighbors in Northern NJ. The initiative invited participants to donate what they would spend on lunch for a day, week, month or more to help Table to Table reduce food waste and feed those who need it most.

Table to Table’s Executive Director, Heather Thompson, commended the students for their community leadership and recognized their remarkable impact on addressing food insecurity. Thanks to a challenge grant from The Bernard and Geraldine Segal Foundation, the funds raised by Harrison Elementary School and other participating schools were generously doubled, amplifying their contribution to the cause. Trailblazing West Caldwell Native Sets Record on 358-Mile Long Path Journey

Kim Levinsky, a West Caldwell native, made history this summer by becoming the first woman to complete the 358mile Long Path in New York in one continuous push, setting the record for the fastest known time for a female. The ultrarunner and Race Director for Sassquad Trail Runners in NJ/NY tackled the Long Path, which extends from the 175th Street Subway Station in New York City to John Boyd Thacher State Park near Albany, enduring 9 days and 10 hours of grueling effort, battling continuous rain, flooding and temperatures in the 90s.

Supported by a team of 25 friends who took turns running with her and driving an RV, she slept only 3 hours a night.

Kim used her journey to raise $5,000 for the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and Bigger Than The Trail, which promotes mental health therapy. A documentary of her journey is in production, capturing this remarkable feat of endurance and determination.

West Caldwell Teen Entrepreneur’s Candle Business Illuminates Hope and Sustainability

Ava Tsettos, a 15-year-old entrepreneur from West Caldwell, has a heart as big as her ambitions. As a sophomore at James Caldwell High School, Ava runs her own business, Lit By Ava, selling over 50 homemade candles a week. Her candles, hand-poured in her basement, are not only a hit in three local stores and on Etsy but also at local events.

What sets Ava apart is her generosity. While she saves for her future, including a car and college, she also gives back. A special candle she created for Greens Do Good, New Jersey’s pioneering vertical farm promoting neurodiversity, sees its sales donated to the cause.

Despite her busy schedule, Ava finds time to develop new scents each season, with spring’s collection just around the corner. Her business, born during the challenges of COVID-19, aims to bring light to dark times and uplift spirits. When she’s not crafting candles or hitting the books, the Honor student enjoys playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse at school. Ava’s Etsy store is located here: etsy.com/shop/LiTbyAvA The Green Do Good candle can be purchased here: greensdogood.com/shop/gdg-candles.

Shining a Light in the Darkness: The Schonwetter Family’s Mission of Holocaust Education and Kindness

IIn a world often plagued by darkness and division, the Schonwetter family of Livingston stands out as a beacon of hope and resilience. Composed of Mark Schonwetter and his daughters Isabella Fiske and Ann Arnold, this family is on a mission to ensure that the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten and that the values of kindness and respect are upheld.

The Mark Schonwetter Holocaust Education Foundation (MSHEF), established in 2019 by Mark and his daughters, embodies this mission. The foundation aims to expand and support Holocaust education nationwide, providing grants to schools for field trips, programming, books, and survivor speeches. Through these efforts, the Schonwetter family inspires young people to create a brighter future.

At the heart of this mission is Mark Schonwetter’s story. A survivor of the Holocaust, Mark’s childhood was marked by fear, loss, and unimaginable hardship. Forced to flee his home in Brzostek, Poland, with his mother and younger sister, Mark endured years of hiding to escape the Nazis. Tragically, his father did not survive the brutality of the Nazi Gestapo.

Despite the horrors he faced, Mark’s message is one of love and inclusion. He speaks to audiences across the United States, sharing his story and emphasizing the importance of spreading love and understanding, regardless of race or religion. His words resonate deeply, reminding us all of our shared humanity.

Isabella Fiske, cofounder of MSHEF and former co-chair of the Jewish FederationHolocaust Council of Greater MetroWest of NJ, echoes her father’s message. She emphasizes the critical need for Holocaust education, particularly in light of the recent surge in hate crimes and antisemitism. Isabella believes that education is key to combating hate and ensuring that the atrocities of the Holocaust are learned and never forgotten.

Ann Arnold, who published her father’s story, “Together A Journey for Survival” in 2016, and co-founder of MSHEF, also plays a vital role in the family’s mission. Her book serves as a testament to her father’s resilience and courage, inspiring readers to stand against hate and embrace kindness.

The Schonwetter family’s mission is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is hope. It is a call to action for all of us to stand against hate and to choose kindness, always. Their light shines bright, inspiring others to join them in their mission of education, compassion, and hope.

For more information about MSHEF visit www.mshefoundation.org.

THE HEART OF A PHILANTHROPIST:

Elizabeth Kaufman’s Inspiring Journey of Giving

EElizabeth Kaufman, a compassionate third grader at F.N. Brown Elementary School in Verona, embodies the true spirit of altruism. Since kindergarten, she has been driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact, sparked by a poignant moment during the pandemic. While watching TV with her mother, Arezou, Elizabeth witnessed people in need lining up at a food pantry. Moved by their plight, she immediately expressed her wish to help, igniting a journey of generosity that continues to inspire those around her.

Every year, Elizabeth selects two causes to support through donations. To raise funds, she chooses a local neighborhood where she goes door-to-door for a few hours on Saturdays, selling items her mother purchases for her efforts. Additionally, she raises money through the generosity of friends and family members.

Her mother says she is quite proud of Elizabeth for both starting on a philanthropic path at such a young age and for giving up time on her weekends to raise funds when she could be playing with friends.

At the age of 5, Elizabeth sold erasers and pencils, raising an impressive $800. In 1st grade, she sold small notebooks, bringing in $1,000. Her initiative with sticker pads and pens in second grade raised $1,100, and this year, she raised $1,200 through the sale of blank notebooks and pens. Her goal is to always raise more than the preceding year.

One of Elizabeth’s annual donations is made to No Kid Hungry. However, her philanthropy extends further. In 2nd grade, after learning about a schoolmate battling cancer at NY Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, she began donating more than half of her raised funds to the families at the hospital. The hospital’s social workers inquire with the children about their specific wishes during their stay. Using Elizabeth’s donations, they buy gift cards for meals, Amazon, Apple, and more, ensuring that these children have a bright spot during their challenging times.

“I like helping people. It warms my heart to see them happy,” says Elizabeth, who is an active participant in Brownies and a dedicated basketball player. She has also been practicing Taekwondo for almost four years and is eagerly working towards earning her black belt.

Elizabeth says she plans to keep raising money and is already thinking about what to sell next.

I like helping people. It warms my heart to see them happy.
– ELIZABETH KAUFMAN

Elizabeth’s door-to-door collections run from October through December, but she is always collecting for her cause. To donate via Venmo, the contact information is: @ArezK or her mom Arezou Kaufman can be reached at 973-420-8735.

The goal of this fundraiser is to raise $40,000 for the programs The Monarchs offer to the special needs population.

The Monarchs host weekly skating and hockey practices for special needs children and adults, offering programs like Learn to Skate, Special Hockey, and Sled Hockey. The Monarchs have seen tremendous growth, doubling the number of athletes participating since last year. However, support from the public is critical. This charity hockey game is just one of the many ways the Monarchs aim to subsidize costs and keep programs accessible.

From Learn to Skate to Special Olympics competitions, The Monarchs welcome all special needs athletes aged 3 and up to join programs like Head Start Hockey, SDL (Skylands Developmental League), Speed Skating, Sled Hockey (Coming Soon), and Figure Skating (Coming Soon based on interest).

Natasha S. Alford’s American Negra Book Event

Award-winning journalist Natasha S. Alford grew up between two worlds as the daughter of an African American father and Puerto Rican mother. In American Negra, a narrative that is part memoir, part cultural analysis, Alford reflects on growing up in a working-class family from the city of Syracuse, NY.

In smart, vivid prose, Alford illustrates the complexity of being multiethnic in Upstate New York and society’s flawed teachings about matters of identity. When she travels to Puerto Rico for the first time, she is the darkest in her family, and navigates shame for not speaking Spanish fluently. She visits African American hair salons where she’s told that she has “good” hair, while internalizing images that as a Latina she has “bad” hair or pelo malo.

On her journey from an underfunded public school system to Harvard University, from a hedge fund boardroom to a classroom

and ultimately a newsroom, CNN journalist Alford shares what it’s like to live at the intersections of race, culture, gender, and class, all while staying true to yourself.

Co-sponsored by CASA of Essex County and The Bibliophiles, Inc. Ticket includes a signed copy of American Negra

Ride the Easter Bunny Express!

FFor over 30 years the Museum has been welcoming the thousands of families who come to Whippany to celebrate the return of Spring with this fun-themed train ride through Morris County! The Easter Bunny and helpers will be on board the train greeting everyone during the 45-minute round-trip ride along the historic Whippanong Trail.

Your train ride experience departs from and returns to the Whippany Railway Museum site in Whippany. Guests enjoy the comfort of heated passenger coaches as the Bunny makes his way through the cars to visit with you and your children. Kids are sure to be delighted when they receive a special gift from the Easter Bunny while riding aboard this memorable train. Guest will ride on one of the Easter Bunny premium club cars:

Subscription Club Car: “Lackawanna No. 2454”—Surround yourself with the grandeur of another era onboard the award-winning Lackawanna Subscription

Club Car No. 2454, which radiated elegance on a train once known as ‘The Millionaire’s Express’ that operated between Hoboken Terminal and Gladstone.

Club Car: “Jersey Coast”—The Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast’ is a beautifully-restored car that features all the amenities offered by the CNJ’s deluxe ‘Blue Comet’ passenger train of the 1930s. ‘The Blue Comet’ ran between Jersey City and Atlantic City, and the striking paint scheme of cream and blue reminds one of a comet streaking through space.

Coach Car: Our standard “Dieseliner” coaches may look modern, but they are historic in their own right. Still in service at Whippany over a half-century since they were constructed, you can enjoy a relaxing ride onboard these cars that once conveyed commuters to Hoboken Terminal from 1970 through the early-2000s.

This is a limited-time event, and the rides usually sell out early, so advance online reservations are strongly recommended!

Transform or Rejuvenate Your Kitchen With the Expertise of Kitchen Tune-Up

KKitchen Tune-Up, a woman-owned business with a leadership team comprised of women, has the support of a national franchise recognized as Best Overall Kitchen Remodeling Company of 2023 by BobVila.com. Here, owner Takia Livingston shares what she and her team can do for your kitchen.

What are trends in kitchen remodeling?

The resurgence of earthy tones and wood finishes. Lighter finishes, such as white oak and natural wood, are the predominant choices. The enduring trend of two-toned kitchens is experiencing a resurgence–employing one color for wall cabinets and another for the island.

You describe Kitchen Tune-Up as customer driven. Can you expand on that?

We carefully listen. We communicate. We respect your home. We arrive on time, and we provide solutions. We ensure that concerns are promptly addressed. We have a dedicated team comprised of an assistant general manager, a project manager, in-house trained technicians and a dedicated designer to ensure projects go smoothly.

How do you help clients design the perfect project?

We meticulously consider all facets of their home life. Factors such as whether they have small children, if there’s a need for accessibility inside cabinets or what their long-term goals are play a crucial role.

How do you help the customer decide if a total remodel is needed or whether your other services offer a solution?

During assessment, we determine what’s needed and provide a solution that best fits. We often meet customers who love their existing layout and are told by contractors they need to do a total remodel. We are equipped to provide solutions that allow you to keep your layout and have the existing doors replaced with custom made ones suited to your style. We offer several ways to remodel kitchens, all curated to meet the varying needs of our clients.

What drew you to Kitchen Tune-Up?

When I embarked to remodel my own kitchen finding a trustworthy contractor was daunting. I looked at my husband Steven and said, “There has to be a better

way!” I was also considering a profession change after taking a break to be home full-time with my daughter. I made the decision to not pursue dentistry, which is my trained profession. After doing extensive research, we discovered Kitchen Tune-Up and everything clicked.

WWith its rich tones and distinguished style, hardwood flooring can be a beautiful design element of your home. However, it’s important to know the proper care procedures to maintain its condition for decades to come.

Consider these tips for keeping hardwoods in tip-top shape:

• GUARD AGAINST WATER – Water can penetrate deep into the wood, causing stains and ruining the outside finish. Use plastic trays under potted plants and pets’ bowls. Wipe up spills and accidents immediately.

• USE AREA RUGS – If you have any heavy traffic areas – by the front door, hallways or around the kitchen table or couch, for example – use area rugs to protect against wear and tear. Area rugs are also an easy way to boost the style factor of your home.

• TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES – Encourage family members and guests to take off their shoes when they walk in. Shoes can bring in sand and dirt, so position area rugs at door entryways to act as barriers.

• SWEEP OR VACUUM REGULARLY – Dust and dirt can act as sandpaper, wreaking havoc on your floor’s finish. A weekly sweep can help keep this at bay while enhancing your flooring’s general appearance. If using your vacuum, be sure to use an attachment with soft brushes to guard from additional wear.

• CLEAN NATURALLY – For a deep clean, ditch the harsh chemicals. Simply pour 1 cup of vinegar into a bucket with 1 gallon of water, mixing well. Use a soft mop and move in the direction of the floorboards. Go over with a clean, soft towel to dry excess water.

– Family Features

By following these simple steps, you and your family will be able to cherish your hardwood floors for many years to come. Learn more at eLivingtoday.com.

W GARAGE DOORS for Curb Appeal

When it comes to increasing the curb appeal of your home and getting a high return on investment (ROI), installing a new garage door is often overlooked but can make a significant difference. A new garage door not only enhances the aesthetics of your home but also provides several practical benefits that can add value to your property.

First impressions matter, and the garage door is often one of the first things people notice about a house. An old, worn-out garage door can detract from the overall appearance of your home, giving it a dated and neglected look. On the other hand, a new, modern garage door can instantly boost your home’s curb appeal, making it more attractive to potential buyers.

In terms of ROI, a new garage door ranks high among home improvement projects. According to the 2020 Cost vs. Value Report by Remodeling magazine, the national average ROI for a garage door replacement is around 94.5%. This means that you can expect to recoup nearly all of the cost of the new garage door when you sell your home.

One reason for the high ROI of a new garage door is its relatively low cost compared to other home upgrades. While kitchen and bathroom renovations can cost tens of thousands of dollars, a new garage door typically costs much less, making it a cost-effective way to enhance your home’s exterior.

Additionally, a new garage door can improve the energy efficiency and security of your home. Many modern garage doors are insulated, which can help regulate the temperature in your garage and reduce energy costs. They also come with advanced security features, such as rolling code technology, which makes it harder for thieves to break in.

When choosing a new garage door, consider the style and material that will best complement your home’s architecture. Popular options include steel, wood, and composite options, each offering its own unique benefits in terms of durability, maintenance, and aesthetics.

TIPS FOR REMOVING GREASE from Kitchen Cabinets

PProper cleaning and maintenance will help keep your kitchen cabinets looking clean and pristine. To prevent grease buildup, clean your cabinets regularly, especially those near the stove. Wipe down surfaces after cooking to catch grease before it hardens.

GENTLE CLEANING SOLUTION: Mix a mild dish soap or a few drops of liquid detergent with warm water. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the finish.

WARM WATER RINSE: Dampen a clean cloth or sponge in the soapy water mixture, wring it out well, and wipe down the greasy areas on your cabinets. Always use a gentle touch to avoid scratching the surface.

VINEGAR SOLUTION: White vinegar is a natural degreaser. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and use this solution for more stubborn grease stains. Test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t harm the cabinet finish.

BAKING SODA PASTE: For tough, sticky grease spots, make a paste using baking soda and water. Gently rub it onto the affected area with a soft cloth, and then wipe clean with a damp cloth.

COMMERCIAL CLEANERS: Some kitchen cabinet-specific cleaners are available on the market. Read and follow the product instructions carefully.

MICROFIBER CLOTH: Use a microfiber cloth for the final wipe-down to ensure a streak-free finish.

CABINET HARDWARE: Don’t forget to clean cabinet knobs and handles. Remove them if possible and soak them in warm, soapy water for a thorough cleaning.

PROTECTIVE COATING: Apply a furniture wax or cabinet polish to create a protective barrier that makes it easier to clean in the future.

Remember to always read the manufacturer’s care instructions for your specific cabinet material, as different surfaces may require special care.

Adding Retaining Walls to Your Property

RRetaining walls hold back soil and prevent erosion on sloped landscapes. They offer several benefits that make them a valuable addition to any property. Here are some benefits of a retaining wall and things to consider when installing one.

Retaining walls help to hold soil in place, preventing erosion and the loss of valuable land. They can enhance the beauty of your property by creating a terraced garden or providing a backdrop for plants and flowers. A retaining wall can level off a steep slope, creating a flat area that can be used for a patio, garden, or play area. They can also protect the property to prevent damage caused by soil erosion and landslides.

When deciding to add retaining walls to your property, determine whether it is for aesthetic purposes or to prevent soil erosion. The purpose will determine the design and materials needed. Keep in mind that the slope and soil conditions of the site will influence the design and construction of the retaining wall. The height and length of the wall will also depend on site conditions. Different types of materials available, such as concrete, stone, brick, and wood, will affect the durability, aesthetics, and cost. It is essential to have proper drainage, which is crucial in the performance and longevity, ensuring adequate drainage to prevent water buildup behind the wall.

CLEVER STORAGE IDEAS for Small or

Cluttered

Spaces

NNo matter how cramped and cluttered your living space may be, you can almost always find a spot or two for extra storage. It’s often just a matter of getting creative and utilizing a few clever solutions. Consider these simple ideas to create some extra space in oft-used rooms:

KITCHEN

• Metal rods with hanging hooks can create storage space on your blank walls. Use them to hang coffee cups, cooking utensils, dish towels or pots and pans.

• Magnetic strips mounted on the wall, or the inside of a cabinet door can be a simple way to hang knives and free up counter space normally taken up by a knife block.

• If your countertop is cluttered with small spice containers and oil bottles, elevate them with a decorative cake stand. Place small jars below and top with pretty decanters and additional spices.

• If you’re using prime cabinet space for items you only use once a year, such as holiday cake pans or a big serving bowl you pull out for parties, consider storing them in the attic or a closet instead.

BATHROOM

BEDROOM

• Instead of hanging just one towel bar on the back of the bathroom door, hang multiple to maximize your drying space.

• Most modern cabinetry has adjustable shelving. If you haven’t customized the heights of your shelving to accommodate different sized bottles and containers, give it a try.

• A three-tiered fruit basket might seem perfect for the kitchen, but it’s also a handy way to store bathroom essentials right beside the sink.

• Flour and sugar canisters can also be repurposed in the bathroom to keep makeup, toiletries, cleaning supplies and soaps contained. Make sure to buy bins that stack easily.

• Nix those nightstands and hang small shelves on either side of the bed. This cuts down on the clutter you can keep and makes cleaning underneath a breeze.

• Rolling bins that fit under the bed are perfect for storing linens, out-of-season clothing and children’s toys. They’re also the perfect way to slide building block projects out of sight without destroying your child’s latest masterpiece.

• Closets with a single hanging rod are one of the biggest spacewasters in the bedroom. Double their storage capacity by hanging a second rod or shelf below shorter jackets and shirts.

Signs That it is Time to Replace the Siding on Your Home

Your home’s siding is more than just a protective layer; it’s an essential element that enhances your property’s aesthetics and shields it from the elements. Over time, siding can deteriorate, and it is crucial to recognize the signs that indicate it’s time for replacement.

Y• Cracks, warping, or holes in your siding are obvious indicators that it needs replacing. These issues compromise your home’s insulation and allow moisture to penetrate.

• If the siding’s paint is chipping or fading unevenly, it is a sign that the material is no longer effectively sealing your home.

• Escalating energy bills might point to inefficient insulation due to deteriorating siding.

• Persistent mold or mildew growth on your siding suggests moisture is trapped behind it, potentially causing more significant structural problems.

• When your siding starts bubbling or blistering, it’s an indicator of water damage beneath the surface.

Replacing siding when these signs arise can prevent more extensive and costly damage. Regular maintenance and inspection can prolong the life of your home’s siding and protect your investment.

Reveal Your INNER BEAUTY

Look, Feel and Function at Your Best

WWalking into The Spa at MECCA in Fairfield is like entering a luxurious, warm and inviting oasis. Whether coming in for Botox®, fillers, a facial or any of the other myriad of services, you can trust that you’re being treated by an experienced and caring team of experts.

Founder, Dr. Dena Lacara, and her team focus on making connections and building long-term relationships with patients. “We've been here since 2009, and still have our original employees,” she says. “Our injectors have over 50 years of combined experience.” Until recently, the spa had only physician injectors, but has added a wonderful nurse practitioner to the team. “I am blessed beyond measure to have an amazing team behind me.”

A family medicine physician, Dr. Lacara didn’t plan on opening a spa, but “my patients forced me into it,” she says laughing. “It was my patients’ insistence that led me to begin training in aesthetics in 2007 and, as a perpetual student, I never stopped.”

In addition to her medical specialty, Dr. Lacara has extensive training in aesthetic medicine including lasers, Botox, fillers and cosmetic dermatology. A testament to her level of skill and training, Dr. Lacara was recently appointed national faculty for the Allergan Medical Institute and now has the privilege of training others in the field of aesthetics.

Reveal Your Inner Beauty

The Spa at MECCA is part of a multidisciplinary medical practice, MECCA Integrated Medical Center, which is overseen by Dr. Lacara and her husband, Dr. Michael Sapienza. In 2020, due to high demand, they expanded their space. The entire practice is now 9,600 square feet with 2,600 dedicated to the spa.

The most requested services, she says, are Botox and fillers, with facials and chemical peels close behind. “Botox can literally take years off. Simply put, it smooths lines and wrinkles due to repetitive expression giving the client a refreshed look. Results are impactful and delivered in a quick and

easy, no downtime procedure.” Fillers have also been a real game changer. “With filler we can restore youthful facial contours. By placing filler strategically throughout the face, we can balance facial features by improving chin projection, sharpening the jawline, and restoring midface volume, for example.”

The spa's mission is to reveal each patient's inner beauty. “A lot of patients tell us they don’t feel their age but are distressed by the changes they see when looking in the mirror. It’s about giving patients’ their self-confidence back. It’s amazing how small tweaks can results in subtle, natural enhancements that leave patients feeling refreshed and looking rejuvenated.”

The real joy of this business, she says, is the fact that at MECCA they are there for people in every capacity whether it’s beautification, pain relief, weight reduction or improved mobility.

“We really are a multi-disciplinary practice, and our collective goal is to help patients look, feel, and function at their best,” says Dr. Lacara. “At the end of the day, I love helping people grow and evolve which is why despite the evolution of MECCA and the growth of the spa, I continue to practice medicine full time as a solo practitioner. I continue to ‘do it all’ because I find it so rewarding.” The

JBWS –Providing Safety, Support and Solutions from Abuse

MMorris County and the surrounding areas are fortunate to have JBWS, an agency dedicated to helping families impacted by domestic violence. Founded more than 40 years ago by a group of volunteers concerned with the growing violence in the area, JBWS and its partners are helping survivors improve their situations for themselves and their children.

Diane Williams, MSW, LCSW, is the CEO of JBWS. Community partnerships led to her work at JBWS. “I realized that I had been working toward this job my entire life,” she said. Through collaboration with community partners, the organization has grown to meet the overwhelming needs of victims of domestic violence. “Between 2021 and 2022 there was a 78% increase in the number of survivors and their children seeking safety in the temporary emergency shelter.

JBWS continues its original mission through the prevention of domestic violence through the protection and empowerment of survivors, the rehabilitation of the family, advocacy for social reform to prevent partner violence, and education to the public about domestic violence and its consequences.

According to Williams, the biggest problem for domestic abuse survivors is finding affordable housing. The number of survivors

needing shelter grows while the funds to support such housing are decreasing. Emergency shelter provides an opportunity for short-term stays averaging 46 days at JBWS in 2023. The transitional housing program – consisting of eleven furnished apartments, allows stays for up to two years for survivors. “For survivors in both programs, JBWS looks for ways to help them through resources for independent living through employment, housing, counseling, legal and other needs,” says Williams.

Despite the rising cases of domestic violence locally and nationally, Williams sees an amazing collaboration in the community to combat domestic violence. Community nonprofits, law enforcement, legal offices, and local volunteers work together to support the victims of domestic abuse.

“I wake up each morning looking forward to going to work,” says Williams.

FFamily Law Attorney, Melissa Cipriano, founder of Cipriano Law Offices, P.C. in West Caldwell is passionate about mediation. She feels that right now, with several counties experiencing Judicial storages, not scheduling trials, Family Court matters are paused making mediation more important than ever.

Cipriano Law Offices has 4 qualified mediators, who are on the court approved list and can help families work through all aspects of custody, parenting time, child support and deal with equitable distribution of marital assets. The firm recognizes the strain that delays place on families. “Right now, it is hard for those going through a divorce to get relief,” says Melissa. “Mediation allows your case to continue moving forward in the face of court delays.”

Mediation allows parties to resolve their issues amicably. According to Melissa, “Stats show that resolving issues by compromising leads to less litigious divorces and doing so through mediation helps keep the overall costs down.”

Melissa says, “As a mediator you get to know the parties well. You understand the challenges they are facing, and you can help them craft a resolution that will work best for their family.”

The ethos of Cipriano Law Offices is to help families create a happy, healthy, stable new life after divorce, which is certainly evident in their dedication to moving families forward in these difficult times.

Melissa and her team assist with all aspects of Family Law representation throughout NJ through Mediation, Parenting Coordination, and Litigation by a team with over 100 combined years of Family Law representation.

Yanina Fleysher

FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT— YANINA & CO.

451 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove 973-857-5544 | Yanina-Co.com

TTwo years after arriving in the U.S. in 1979 from the former Soviet Union, Yanina Fleysher started working in the jewelry business. “I found that not only did I have the talent to do it, but I loved it,” she says. “I loved working with people, and I loved designing.” When that business closed, she couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

One night, while going to the movies, she drove by the Jewelry Exchange in Wayne. “I think it was a Tuesday. I knocked on the door and told the owner I was interested in a booth. I was just a kid. I think I was 19 years old. I don’t know why he decided to give me a chance.”

Instead of continuing to the movies, Yanina went home and told her parents what she wanted to do. With their help, she was able to secure the most prominent and most visible space. “I signed a five-year lease and was open by that Friday morning.”

Because of her prior relationships with vendors, she secured merchandise on consignment. However, within a year, she was designing and manufacturing her own jewelry in order to give her customers high-quality pieces and better pricing.

Only three years later, she opened her flagship store, Yanina and Co., in Cedar Grove. “There weren’t too many women in this business back then, and I was young. Having to break through that was quite interesting and tough.”

It is now an actual family business. Her brother, Alex, is her business partner, and her son, Branden Sheehan, is the director of business development. She still has customers that she has had from day one.

“We came here to make a future,” says Yanina. “We really love this country, and we made the best of it.”

PERSONAL TRAINER MY TIME FITNESS & NUTRITION

973-896-9263 | www.mytimellc.com

CCarolyn Mastrangelo believes that we must take of ourselves first to care for others. Carolyn established My Time Fitness & Nutrition about 12 years ago, inspired by that philosophy. With two young daughters and a demanding corporate job, she was eager to focus solely on fitness and nutrition in a private, relaxed setting.

A certified American Council on Exercise (ACE) personal trainer, Carolyn has worked with men and women ages 16-90 of all skill levels. Clients can exercise with Carolyn in her studio in Roseland or their own homes. Online classes are also available.

In addition to personal training, Carolyn is a nutrition coach through Precision Nutrition (PN1). “My focus is to help people develop better habits by adding in healthy foods, not eliminating entire categories of food,” she says. “I do not want to live in a world without pizza and ice cream.” She counsels her clients via Zoom, email, phone, or in person.

One of Carolyn’s greatest achievements has been the creation of “Running 4 Answers, a race against Alzheimer’s”. Inspired by her mother’s battle with early onset Alzheimer’s, this 5k race and 2-mile fun run is having its final event on April 27th in Roseland. Benefiting Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, R4A has donated almost $500,000 over its 15 years.

Carolyn is truly an inspiration for self-care. “I never tire telling people how much I love my job,” she says.

FFor the third consecutive year, Ellen Gonik is #1 Agent in New Jersey in both units sold and dollar amount for Coldwell Banker Realty. Her specialty areas are West Essex, Morris and Union Counties. Ellen is the “Real Closer” and is often referred to as “The Powerhouse”.

There are multiple reasons why, after 15 years in real estate, she’s achieved that milestone. Ellen commands respect in the industry amongst her colleagues and clients. It is this stellar reputation and her connections that allow Ellen’s business to continue to thrive, even and especially in a tough real estate market with limited inventory and high interest rates.

As a mother of three daughters, Ellen truly understands what buyers want in a “home.” She gets to know her clients, their tastes and what they want for their families. “I’m also a business woman,” she emphasizes. “We focus on the emotional aspect of choosing a house but of course I extend my experience and recommend the right attorney, the right mortgage broker and the right inspector.” Only the best - the ones she would be sharing with her own friends.

OWNER/FOUNDER BE WELL PSYCHOTHERAPY, LLC

MY MISSION IS: When I opened these doors in 2018, it was to create a service that included the feeling of connection. This feeling was created from walk and talk events, and is sustained through ongoing networking, ongoing team building, and weekly staff luncheons.

CLIENTS CHOOSE US: Because of our unique connection to others. As clinicians, as a team, as a work family, we feel connected to each other. This resonates with our clients, as well as our Be Well Community.

WHEN I AM NOT IN THE OFFICE: I love to go for walks. I love to tap dance. I enjoy sharing my children’s book, Dance with Me, Please, about patience and persistence! But most of all, I love being a mom!

OUR BIGGEST TIP FOR CLIENTS: Get outside and get yourself a houseplant!

331 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair | 973-233-0350 | www.gioiamianj.com

MMary Cumella transitioned from General Manager of the beloved Montclair restaurant Fascino to Managing Partner of its new incarnation, Gioia Mia. A new Seasonal, Contemporary American restaurant, built on her years of experience in the demanding restaurant industry.

As a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, she spent more than a decade cooking beside master chefs. “Being one of very few women in a male dominated workplace, I was not always taken seriously. I had to work harder than most to prove myself,” she said. Just like many other women in the restaurant industry, Mary faced many bumps along the road with sexual harassment. But she did not lose sight of her goal. Instead, it made her eager to fulfill her dream of working for herself and

creating a safe, welcoming environment for her team. Her staff is her top priority. She is constantly hosting team building exercises and treating them with the utmost respect.

When, in 2020, she joined the DePersio family at Fascino as GM, she brought with her kitchen, front-of-house, and event planning skills. She took a brief hiatus to deepen her knowledge of wine and spirits.

In September 2022, as the DePersios prepared to move on, she was ready.

Renaming the restaurant Gioia Mia (“My Joy”) after her grandmother’s pet name for her, she is now hands on in every aspect of the business from answering phones, greeting people at the door, and building relationships with every table to bring that extra “joy” to their dining experience.

Guests have responded. “Some longtime Fascino diners frequent Gioia Mia weekly,

if not more,” Cumella said. She has even involved these patrons in the design process when remodeling the restaurant. “The regulars have become part of our family” she said.

Plans are afoot for a “First Anniversary” party in April and a “Brunch with the Easter Bunny,” Cumella said. She is also planning a Spring wine dinner. Event details will be available on the Gioia Mia website.

Reduce Stress, Naturally

SStress can take a toll on our mental and physical well-being. Therefore, it is essential to adopt healthy habits to manage stress effectively.

One of the most important habits that can help reduce stress is getting enough sleep. When we sleep, our bodies and minds recharge, allowing us to be more productive and better able to cope with daily stressors. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night to ensure you are getting the rest you need.

Regular exercise is another key habit that can help reduce stress. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters that can help you feel more relaxed and less stressed. Even just a 30-minute walk each day can make a big difference in reducing stress levels.

Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables is also important in managing stress. A balanced diet can help ensure that your body is getting the nutrients it needs to function properly and can help keep your energy levels up throughout the day.

Finally, taking time to relax and do things you enjoy can help reduce stress levels. This can include activities such as reading a book, practicing yoga, or spending time with friends and family. Taking a break from our daily routine can help us recharge and feel more balanced, leading to a reduction in stress levels overall.

STEP UP YOUR GAME:

Why Taking the Stairs

NElevates Your Health

Next time the opportunity presents itself, step up your game by skipping the elevator. Taking the stairs is a simple way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine and can contribute to a healthier lifestyle in numerous ways.

Here are just a few benefits that cardiologist, Jeffrey Lander, MD, FACC, Co-Director of Sports Cardiology for RWJBarnabas Health and Medical Director of the Cardiac Care Unit at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, shares with us.

• CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH. Regular stair climbing can improve cardiovascular fitness by strengthening your heart and lowering the risk of heart disease.

• MENTAL HEALTH. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce stress levels.

• BURN CALORIES. Climbing stairs burns more calories than walking, contributing to weight management and increased metabolism.

• MUSCLE STRENGTH. When using the stairs it engages major muscle groups like your calves, quads, and glutes, enhancing strength and toning these muscles.

• IMPROVED ENDURANCE. Incorporating stairs into your routine can enhance endurance levels, making everyday activities easier.

• BONE HEALTH. Choosing to take the stairs can help maintain bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

NUTRITION RECOMMENDATIONS for Women to

Achieve a Healthier You

NNutrition is essential for everyone, but the nutritional needs of women may differ from those of men. Women require a balanced diet to maintain their overall health and well-being. Here are some key nutrients that women should focus on:

CALCIUM: Women need sufficient calcium to maintain strong bones and prevent osteoporosis. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods.

IRON: Women are at a higher risk of iron deficiency than men due to menstrual blood loss. Iron-rich foods include red meat, poultry, fish, beans, and fortified cereals.

FOLATE: Folate is important for women, especially those who are pregnant or planning to conceive. Good sources of folate include leafy greens, beans, fortified cereals, and citrus fruits.

VITAMIN D: Vitamin D is important for bone health and immune system function. Women can get vitamin D from sunlight, fatty fish, and fortified foods.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS: Omega-3 fatty acids are important for heart health and brain function. Women can get omega-3s from fatty fish, nuts, and seeds.

It’s important to remember that a balanced diet is key to good health, and that all nutrients work together to keep our bodies functioning properly.

FAITH WITHIN THE FALL

TThe purpose of life is not to avoid every potentially harmful situation. We must get our hands dirty to build calluses for the hard work ahead. To learn to fall and get back up, knowing that you’re probably going to fall again, but understanding that each time you do, you get up stronger.

If I had to say the one area that has the most significant impact on success, it is contained in the art of the fall. Here are two reasons why:

1. The intelligence you gain from falling and pushing yourself past your fears and beyond what you think you can do opens up tremendous opportunities. If I look back at all the falls and setbacks for products, ideas, and new concepts, it is always clear that the intelligence gained has been the reason for success in the future. Live each day with a passion for learning something new, whether it’s by reading or taking action. Once you realize the tremendous education you receive from falling, it motivates you to move forward, using that experience to enhance your next steps.

“NOTHING IN LIFE IS TO BE FEARED. IT IS ONLY TO BE UNDERSTOOD.”
– MARIE CURIE
“I’VE FAILED OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE AND THAT IS WHY I SUCCEED.”
– MICHAEL JORDAN

2. Falling Forward. Once you understand that the fall is a crucial strategy to breaking through, you gain quiet confidence as you move forward. Not being afraid to fall can be empowering. When I moved from Karate to Aikido and Jujitsu, I became fascinated with their circular movements and wanted to know how to roll on concrete without injury. I practiced on all surfaces, from dirt and grass to stone and sidewalks. The funny thing is that I’ve often fallen in skateboarding, basketball, or on the ice, and my body rolls out of it naturally. The point here is that knowing you cannot injure yourself from a fall gives you the confidence to try new and riskier moves. And when you approach life and business with the attitude of finding faith within the fall, you can accomplish great things.

The belief and passion in what you’re doing allows you to fall forward with the most incredible power. In the end, faith does soften the fall, and falling isn’t failing as long as you don’t forget to get back up.
