Relief from Peripheral Neuropathy

A New Hope for Those in Pain

IImagine a pain that feels like you are walking on broken glass or have ants crawling up your legs. For those suffering from peripheral neuropathy, relief only comes when the numbness sets in, signaling the final stage of nerve damage. For them pain and numbness have become an inescapable reality.

Overcoming New Challenges: Addressing ChemotherapyInduced Neuropathy

For many cancer survivors, the battle doesn’t end when the chemotherapy stops. While they have conquered one of life’s most daunting challenges, they often find themselves facing a new, relentless enemy: chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. This common side effect of cancer treatments, can be just as disruptive as the illness they’ve defeated.

Chemotherapy-induced neuropathy arises when the powerful drugs used to combat cancer also damage the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, most often in the hands and feet. For many patients, this damage results in a painful, persistent condition that makes everyday activities like waking, driving, even cooking feel like an uphill battle.

Restoring Quality of Life

“It’s relentless, robbing you of sleep, making even the simplest tasks unbearable,” says Barbara, a patient at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. Since 2015 Barbara is among the nearly 5% of individuals over 55 who live with peripheral neuropathy.

Dr. Aleksandra understands the struggle these patients face. “Having survived cancer, they now find themselves in a new fight—for their quality of life,” she explains. Neuropathy is not just a lingering side effect; it severely impacts a person’s ability to live fully.

Specialized Care for Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy

Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, L.Ac., of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, is a specialist in treating Peripheral

Neuropathy. About 75% of her patients suffer from this challenging condition. “For many patients traditional medicine offers limited relief,” explains Dr. Mihajlovic. For those who have already overcome one of life’s greatest challenges, Dr. Aleksandra’s innovative therapies offer a path to reclaiming their lives, free from the shadow of chemotherapyinduced neuropathy.

Remarkable Improvement in Just a Few Months

Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic’s approach to treating nerve damage has led to significant improvements, often within just 3-4 months. Traditional treatments often fall short and come with their own set of complications. Medications like Gabapentin might block nerve signals, but also bring side effects like memory loss, fatigue, and sometimes even more pain. For cancer survivors these side effects can feel like an additional burden.

Dr. Aleksandra offers a different approach. She blends the time-tested practices of Chinese medicine with cutting-edge therapies like LED light therapy, O3 renewal therapy, and ATP Bioresonance Therapy. Her treatments are designed to not only alleviate pain but also to restore balance and promote natural healing. This holistic approach provides hope where there was once despair. “Many of my patients have been told there is no hope,” she shares. “But I believe in offering hope, and more importantly, results.”

Personalized Treatment Plans for Lasting Relief

Dr. Aleksandra tailors each treatment plan to the individual. Barbara, had been told by multiple specialists she would have to endure her condition for the rest of her life. She found new hope after starting treatment with Dr. Aleksandra. “After just five months, I saw a dramatic improvement,” Barbara recalls. She returned to work, and most importantly, she was able to walk down the aisle at her son’s wedding—a moment she feared she would miss. “It was the most magical moment, and I have Dr. Aleksandra to thank for it.”

Acupuncture: A Path to Healing

Through the use of acupuncture, Dr. Aleksandra reduces inflammation, stimulates the release of endorphins, and alleviates pain. With over a decade of experience, she treats a wide range of conditions, including fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, long COVID, rheumatoid arthritis, post-shingles pain, and macular degeneration. “Helping my patients find relief from their pain, is incredibly rewarding,” says Dr. Aleksandra. “Their renewed hope brings me the greatest joy.”

Greenhouse & Pantry Initiatives Blossom at Hazel Avenue Elementary

Hazel Avenue Elementary School in West Orange will kick off their new greenhouse initiative this fall along Hazel Avenue with the help of their neighborhood, parent and school community. The space will integrate permaculture and passive greenhouse philosophies. The greenhouse will be used to grow food to supply a new pantry at the school. Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair, already hosting a weekly free Farmers Market at Hazel, is helping to support this effort. The plan is for the greenhouse and pantry to feed off each other, uplifting the Hazel community, as well as Roosevelt Middle School, both physically and in terms of emotional and educational development. The greenhouse will also serve as a space for kids to read, do science experiments, and learn about how things grow.

In addition to the greenhouse and pantry, the outdoor classroom is being revamped, featuring refinished benches and a new shade structure. This initiative reflects a community-driven effort to enhance education and sustainability at the school, and strengthen the already established tight-knit community.

Weaving Tales of Resilience and Hope

West Caldwell native Carol Van Den Hende has made a significant impact in the literary world with her Goodbye Orchid series. The trilogy—Orchid Blooming, Goodbye Orchid, and the most recently published, Always Orchid—delves into life-altering events and resilience through the journey of Phoenix Walker, whose life is forever changed by an accident. Inspired by combat-wounded veterans, Carol’s poignant storytelling has earned accolades from publications such as “Woman’s World” and “Glamour” magazine.

How a Boy’s Persuasive Essay Won Over His Parents and Brought Home a Pup

When nine-year-old Gabriel Prendergast set his heart on having a dog, his parents were skeptical. “We travel a lot, work a lot, and I’m allergic to dogs,” explained his mom, Michelle. Determined, Gabriel partnered with his tutor, West Caldwell resident Jodi Orland, owner of preschoolwhisperer. com, to craft a compelling essay.

The resilience and strength exhibited by these heroes resonate deeply within her stories, a connection exemplified by endorsements from decorated veterans, including Sergeant Noah Galloway, a finalist on “Dancing with the Stars” despite losing an arm and a leg in Iraq.

The series has won multiple awards for disability awareness and multicultural fiction. Carol’s work aims to inspire hope and empathy, touching readers deeply.

For more about her work, visit carolvandenhende.com. The series is available wherever books are sold.

The essay, handwritten and later typed, detailing why he needed a dog, was impressive. Gabriel’s arguments included feelings of loneliness and how a dog would bring comfort, especially at bedtime. Humored and persuaded, his parents granted his wish, and four months ago, the family welcomed Tango, a tiny, hypoallergenic Shi Shan mix, into their West Orange home.

“Since Jodi started tutoring Gabriel, his writing, reading, and spelling skills have improved immensely. He’s now reading middle school chapter books,” Michelle proudly noted. “Jodi’s support has been invaluable. She’s been crucial to my child’s success and even taught him how to use Word on a laptop, for writing future essays.”

Gabriel’s story shows the power of persistence, education, and a dedicated tutor. With Tango by his side, Gabriel has grown both academically and emotionally.

Teen is Triumphant in Irish Athletics

West Orange’s Ciarán Brosnan recently captured his first national title at the Irish U17 Track and Field National Championships, marking a significant milestone in his budding athletic career. On July 21st, Ciarán traveled to Ireland to represent his father’s track club, An Ríocht. Competing in the U17 400M, he won his heat in 52.82 seconds and secured the national title in the final with an impressive 50.58 seconds.

Ciarán’s rapid progress in athletics is remarkable, having only started a year ago at West Orange High School, where he contributed to his team’s victory at the Super Essex County event and competed at the New Balance Nationals. Looking ahead, he aims to defend his national title next year and qualify for the European Youth Olympics, and will run for Union Catholic High School.

He follows in the footsteps of his brother Shane, a standout runner for West Orange and Union Catholic High Schools, who is currently competing for Harvard. Last year, Shane claimed the Irish U20 5000M title and represented Ireland at the European Cross Country Championship, helping secure the team title for Team Ireland.

PHIL CANTOR Exploring Alter Egos

Smiling Mummer/Mummer Parade Butterfly Girl/Comic Fest

MMany readers of Suburban Essex are familiar with the work of photographer (and 2023 Best of Essex Winner) Phil Cantor from both his portraits of families, and those made of local business people. Growing up in Levittown, Long Island, he followed a similar path to that of many photographic professionals. He had a darkroom in high school, and later worked for his college newspaper. After college, he worked in the AudioVisual industry making photographs for the shows, and then branched out into the realm of Corporate and Industrial Communications.

ALTER EGOS Exhibit

You can view these amazing portraits, at the Berkshire Hathaway Gallery in Montclair from September 20 to November 11, 2024.

You can meet Phil Cantor at the opening reception on Friday, September 20, 2024 from 6-8pm.

Naval Officer/Battle of Monmouth

Moving to Montclair to raise a family over thirty years ago, he was at the forefront of the photojournalistic movement in wedding photography, and shot over 700 weddings in what was a cutting edge style. Now based in a studio in Verona, he concentrates on portraiture.

Less well known are the theme-based Fine Art projects he’s worked on for years. In 2016 he exhibited Close Ups. In that project he made beautifully intimate photographs of very small items, and printed them much larger than life. In 2019, another exhibition, Line of Work, featured portraits inspired by the work of photographer Irving Penn in the 1920’s. Cantor displayed portraits of 44 local people, from his plumber to the mayor of Montclair, each celebrating that person’s vocation.

For the last two years, using a 70 year-old Rolleiflex film camera, Cantor has been photographing people with alter egos. It’s

genesis came when he happened upon a Civil War re-enactment at Ringwood Manor and became fascinated by people who found community with other people who shared a common interest in an uncommon culture.

Cantor has made evocative portraits of war re-enactors of different eras, super heroes at ComicCon, Mummers, professional wrestlers, participants at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and more. It’s a celebration of each participant while they are engaged with a community of like-minded alter egos. Cantor exposes only 3 or 4 frames in the antique camera, while carefully composing the image. There is no cropping or retouching. “There is a joy,” he says, “in meeting these people.”

“LAST RUN” COMMEMORATIVE TRAIN RIDES

FFor the ultimate excursion experience, climb aboard the awardwinning, Lackawanna Railroad Subscription Club Car No. 2454, which radiated elegance on a train once known as ‘The Millionaire’s Express’, that ran between Hoboken Terminal and Gladstone, NJ from 1912 to 1984. It is the very same car that led the final “Lackawanna Electric” train to Dover, NJ on August 24, 1984. Each passenger will receive a commemorative “Lackawanna Electrics” keepsake, while supplies last. The Museum will also welcome several retired Erie Lackawanna employees who operated the MU’s in everyday service decades ago.

The Museum’s president, Steve Hepler recalled: “I was on that last run 40 years ago, and if someone had told me back then that the Whippany Railway Museum would one day eventually acquire, restore and operate No. 2454 on its excursion trains, I would have thought they were daft.”

Passengers can choose to ride in the 1927-era Central Railroad of New Jersey club car ‘Jersey Coast’, which is a beautifully restored, wood-paneled conveyance that features all the amenities

offered by the CNJ’s legendary Blue Comet passenger train of the 1930s that traveled between Jersey City and Atlanitc City. Painted in a two-tone blue, with a cream window band, this striking car reminds one of a comet streaking through space. Another option for passengers is to board a caboose of their choice and experience an old-fashioned, relaxing way of spending a Sunday afternoon with the family.

GREENWOOD GARDENS: Where History Blooms and Community Grows

GGreenwood Gardens, nestled in Short Hills, is a historic gem and a serene natural space. Founded in the early 20th century, the 28-acre public garden has evolved from a private estate into a non-profit public garden dedicated to connecting people with nature and the arts. The garden’s mission is to maintain a historic garden oasis where visitors can experience tranquility and beauty. Open since 2013, the garden is accessible to the public Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May through the first weekend in November.

The organization’s most recent strategic plan calls for the continued renovation of key areas and features, notably the 1920’s era seven-tier Cascade fountain, to enhance both the landscape and visitor experience. Executive Director Abby O’Neill says, “Our comprehensive plan aims to transform Greenwood while preserving its historic charm and ensuring every visitor has a memorable experience.”

Greenwood Gardens offers a variety of events and activities throughout the year. The garden hosts around 50 programs annually, including jazz and classical concerts, dance performances, nature and art history lectures, and creative arts days. A recent highlight was a 1920s-themed Gatsby Date Night, where visitors enjoyed Prosecco and dressed in clothing evoking the era, reliving the estate’s glamorous past.

Special features at Greenwood Gardens include the picturesque Teahouse, Summerhouse, Main Axis fountains, the Tennis Loggia, and pathways built in the 1920s. Visitors can also explore the largest collection of Rookwood tiles in the region and enjoy

gorgeous horticultural displays, as well as interactive farmyard animals, including turkeys, chickens, and geese. There are also comfortable teak benches throughout the garden for use by those wishing to linger and contemplate nature.

In addition, the friendly and welcoming staff at Greenwood Gardens plays a crucial role in ensuring an excellent experience for everyone who visits. With continued efforts to enhance its landscape and facilities, Greenwood Gardens remains a cherished destination for connecting with nature and history.

B & Z Opticians Celebrates 10th ANNIVERSARY

FFall 2024 marks a banner year at B&Z Opticians. Ofer Steinberg and his staff are celebrating his 10th anniversary of owning the business, building on a solid foundation of more than 70 years. B&Z has always held a reputation for outstanding customer service, precision optics and highly innovative fashion eyewear.

PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN

Building on the company’s well-known history, Steinberg was able to expand on it, adding a much deeper inventory with an emphasis on haute couture frames. Four years ago, he made the decision to expand the business, purchasing the building directly across the street and tailoring it to meet every desire he had. It offers much larger and easier parking, as well as handicapped access. The laboratory was updated with additional state- of the-art equipment, providing his clientele with superior fitting skills and precise optics.

The eye-catching and light-filled open floor design is modern yet inviting. Steinberg and his staff pride themselves on their ability to satisfy the needs of his customers. Their help is sought out by people who have complex optical prescriptions as well as those who find it difficult to find well-fitting frames. The knowledgeable staff is helpful and pleasant, creating an easy and friendly atmosphere.

This past year Steinberg introduced his own design collection at the store. “Casey Rae Eyewear,” named after his children’s middle names, are 100% titanium frames. Those familiar with European boutique frames will also find the brands of Sabine Be, Anne & Valentine, Lindberg, Akoni, LaFont, and many more.

I have been going to B&Z for many years and every time I go, they remind me why I have been so loyal to them. Ofer and his team are amazing— they make great suggestions and are extremely patient. The store always has tons of selection of the latest frames. They truly do everything possible to ensure that the customer is happy with their purchase. B&Z is one of the best examples why continuing to shop locally is so important!

B & Z Opticians Celebrates 10th Anniversary

continued from the previous page

“Every face is a work of art” Steinberg explains, and we love adding to that canvas. Fashion is ever evolving. The trick is to find frames that are current, compliment the face and are suitable for the prescription. All three elements are required to have a satisfied customer. Styles and trends will come and go, but our way of working with our customers will never change.

“We thoroughly discuss all of the customers optical needs as dictated by their prescription, occupation and leisure activities. Many people don’t realize that their prescription can be reconfigured to suit a specific need. Computer work, artists, musicians, (to name a few) can find their work much simpler with glasses suited to such tasks.”

This September, to celebrate his 10th anniversary, B&Z Opticians will be hosting multiple in-house events featuring special sales. Beginning on 9/26, there will be trunk shows from some of his most favorite designers.

B&Z has been voted “Best Optician in Essex County” numerous times. Steinberg believes his success is rooted in maintaining his professional commitment. New customers quickly become part of the “B&Z family” joining a long-established clientele that wouldn’t go elsewhere.

We look forward to “framing” you next!

Library Card Sign-Up Month

ESSENTIAL

What’s the most essential school supply of all? “A library card,” says the American Library Association (ALA). September is Library Card Sign-up Month. The observation began in 1987 when U.S. Secretary of Education William J. Bennett urged a national campaign for all kids to obtain and use a library card. Today’s libraries offer a broad array of free materials, services, and activities for kids and adults alike. Here are just a few great reasons to make the library an integral part of your and your child’s life.

Books, Audiobooks & eBooks

In addition to vast collections of print fiction, non-fiction, and reference books, libraries offer audiobooks on CD, including unabridged editions. Many libraries also provide ebooks in multiple formats.

Periodicals

Newspapers, magazines, and niche periodicals are available for both in-library use and check out.

Computer Games & Software

If your kids are into video games, the library has an array of children’s educational software and video games. You can also find teen and adult video games, instructional and reference software, and productivity software ranging from Microsoft programs to graphic design.

Movies & Films

Today’s libraries offer a great selection of mainstream movies and television series as well as educational, independent, and foreign films on DVD for kids and adults alike.

Music CDs

Music is the universal language. You’ll find a large selection of pop, rock, and country music CDs at the library. You can even introduce your kids to classical, jazz, blues, international music, and more.

Computer & Internet Use

Nearly all libraries offer free computer access for Internet browsing and research. You’ll also likely have access to basic word processing programs, Excel, PowerPoint, and more.

Inter-Library Loan

If you can’t find a book or item you’re looking for, most libraries have inter-library and reciprocal loan programs. Just ask your library if it can request the material from another library for you. Some library systems also have arrangements so you can use your library card at libraries in nearby communities.

Online Catalog

Most libraries have a website with access to their complete catalog. You can browse or search for materials from home to determine their availability before you head out. If an item you want isn’t available, you can usually reserve it or request an inter-library loan right from your computer.

Special Events

A wide array of programs, events, and activities are found at libraries throughout the year. These may include children’s storytimes, computer classes, enrichment programs, book discussion groups, usedbook sales, author events, children’s and teen movies, craft activities, and more.

IMPLANTS That Last and Feel Just Like REAL TEETH

A DENTIST WHO GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR HIS PATIENTS

DDr. Michael Davidson of Edgemont Dental Arts is a staple in the town of Montclair. As a trusted dentist, he believes in always going above and beyond when it comes to patient care and continued education. He completes hundreds of hours of training each year, way above the mandatory 20-hour state requirement.

Recently, he obtained his dental implant credentials from the American Board of Oral Implantology (ABOI), and is now a board certified Implant Surgeon, allowing him to safely and comfortably place single and multiple and full mouth dental implants.

“I saw the difference that implant dentistry can make for patients and the joy that it brings them when they can get their teeth back,” says Dr. Davidson. “They don’t have to take these teeth out, and being able to feel like they can actually chew or crunch down on their foods without any worries is giving patients their quality of life back. It’s just a tremendous feeling to be able to provide that to my patients.”

It’s common for him to ask his patients about their completed implants and they say, “What Implants?” His work feels so natural that it is easy to forget anything was done!

Since implant dentistry is on the more expensive side, it’s critical to have someone like Dr. Davidson, who is highly trained, perform these procedures. “If you’re going to be spending that kind of money, you want to make sure that the teeth will last a long time.”

He explains that there are plenty of weekend courses to learn how to place implants, but they’re not as thorough as the training he received. “The ABOI is the highest credentialing anyone can possibly get in dentistry. This credentialing really helps me solidify my commitment to my patients to give them something outstanding.”

In addition to implants and other restorative and cosmetic treatments, Edgemont Dental Arts provides many other services including checkups, teeth cleaning, fillings, teeth whitening, and periodontal maintenance. The practice treats patients of all ages and requirements with integrity and compassion.

BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM HELPS TO ENHANCE YOUR

AA robust and resilient immune system is essential for safeguarding your health. To fortify your immune system and optimize its functionality, consider the following detailed tips:

• Consume a wide range of nutrient-rich foods, including colorful fruits, green leafy vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals crucial for supporting immune function.

• Exercise is not just for physical fitness, it also enhances immune system regulation. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic weekly exercise, complemented by strength training sessions. This commitment to regular exercise will help you optimize your immune system’s functionality.

BODY’S DEFENSES

• Your immune system needs rest as much as your body does. Prioritize restorative sleep, aiming for 7-9 hours per night. Adequate sleep duration and quality are vital for immune system maintenance and optimal functioning. By making sleep a priority, you’re taking a significant step towards fortifying your immune system.

• Limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking, as these habits can impair immune function and overall health.

• Adopt stress-reducing practices such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or spending time in nature. Chronic stress can compromise immune function, so minimizing its impact is essential.

• Consume at least 8-10 cups of water daily to ensure adequate hydration. Proper hydration supports the immune system’s ability to function optimally.

• Practice proper hygiene, including regular handwashing with soap and water to prevent the spread of infections and maintain immune health.

• Consider incorporating immune-boosting supplements such as vitamin C, D, zinc, and probiotics into your daily regimen. Consult with a healthcare professional to determine appropriate supplementation based on individual needs.

RRosacea is a common skin condition that affects at least 14 million U.S. adults and commonly appears as a tendency to blush or flush more easily than others. “It’s possible to control your rosacea and even prevent it from getting worse by recognizing and avoiding triggers, ranging from alcohol to sunlight to the skin care products you use,” says Lycia Thornburg, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist.

Signs and symptoms of rosacea include flushing and redness in the center of the face, swollen skin that may be very sensitive, sting, or burn visibly broken blood vessels, acne-like breakouts, usually where the skin is very red and tend to come and go, and oily skin.

Look for products that say they are noncomedogenic (non-pore-clogging) and made for sensitive skin. Avoid using products with these ingredients on your face: alcohol, camphor, fragrance, glycolic acid, lactic acid, menthol, sodium laurel sulfate, and urea. Don’t be tempted to skip cleansing up to twice daily; it will help remove oil and dirt that can worsen irritation. Moisturize every day after cleansing, even if your skin feels oily.

Avoid rubbing or scrubbing your face or using washcloths, facial sponges, or exfoliators, as anything that irritates your skin can worsen rosacea. A yellow-tinted concealer can mask discoloration on skin tones ranging from light to dark, and a green-tinted concealer can camouflage redness. Dermatologists often recommend water-based or powder makeup, which doesn’t irritate rosacea.

JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER at the St. Jude Walk/Run!

MMake a difference and have a blast at the St. Jude Walk/Run this September! Help raise funds for the incredible kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and be recognized with official St. Jude gear.

The goal is to raise $400,000 to support St. Jude’s lifesaving mission of Finding cures and saving children. This event unites all in the fight against childhood cancer during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The aim is to push towards a future where childhood cancer is a thing of the past.

According to the CDC, each year, an estimated 15,780 children in the United States and 400,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer. While survival rates have improved, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children in America. By 2040, the number of childhood cancer survivors in the United States is expected to reach

580,000. St. Jude’s survivorship studies provide a greater understanding of the long-term effects of pediatric cancer treatment, helping researchers develop novel approaches to minimize those late effects. Additionally, St. Jude invests more

than $30 million annually in global programs to share knowledge and technology, aiming to improve access to and quality of care for children with cancer worldwide.

Best of Essex 2024 READERS’ CHOICE CONTEST

The Best of Essex Contest is a chance for our readers to support their local favorites and for local businesses to gain the recognition they truly deserve. As our readers vote for their favorite restaurants, stores, home services, and wellness providers, their votes also support three local causes: Toni’s Kitchen, CASA for Children, and Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch. It’s a win-win-win, empowering our community and businesses.

Voting is now live and continues through October 15.

Each year, we change the categories. Look for the new categories in red. Past nominees are automatically part of this year’s contest. If you’re a new business and want to participate in the Best of Essex Contest, call us at 973-276-1688.

We look forward to your participation.

CASA Essex: Advocating for Foster Children for Nearly Four Decades

Meet One of the Best of Essex Contest Benefactors

FFor nearly four decades, CASA Essex has been crucial in advocating for foster children, ensuring they receive the support and stability they need. Under Executive Director Marla Higginbotham, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) pairs dedicated volunteers with children navigating the foster care system.

“Supporting CASA is not just about helping a child today; it's about investing in the future for our entire community. By empowering our volunteers and strengthening our program, we can ensure that every child in foster care has the opportunity to reach their full potential,” says Higginbotham.

CASA volunteers work one-on-one with children, visiting them at their placements, ranging from family homes to independent living. These advocates meet with the children at least once a month and engage with everyone involved in their lives—teachers, doctors, therapists, and guardians. This comprehensive approach ensures nothing falls through the cracks.

Becoming a CASA volunteer involves training, background checks, and being sworn in by a family court judge. Upcoming virtual training sessions begin September 17 at 5:30 pm, and October 10 at 9 am. CASA holds information sessions bi-weekly for those interested in learning more.

“Volunteers make a significant impact by providing stability and a sense of normalcy for these children,” Higginbotham emphasizes. They address educational, emotional, and social needs and advocate in and out of court to ensure the children’s best interests are met. Volunteers come from all walks of life, united by the desire to make a difference.

Currently, CASA Essex serves 274 of the 450 at-risk children in the county and always needs more volunteers. Donations are also vital, helping support CASA's mission and the children they serve. For information, please visit casaessex.org.

GEMS of WISDOM

II recently had the pleasure of interviewing Kenan Thompson for Diamond Minds on Brinx.TV. Before my interview, I was lucky enough to spend some quality time with him and found him to be one of the most grounded celebrities I’ve ever encountered. Kenan has been a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live since 2003, making him the longesttenured cast member in the show’s history.

He had so many gems of wisdom to share about performance under pressure and the attributes of success. What was crystal clear in one segment was what he said about the two keys to failure and the two keys to success. I want to share them with you and elaborate on their importance to our long-term success and well-being.

“Never seem more learned than the people you are with. Wear your learning like a pocket watch and keep it hidden. Do not pull it out to count the hours, but give the time when you are asked.”
– LORD CHESTERFIELD, BRITISH STATESMAN

“Two Keys to Failure:

Greed. Kenan made it very clear that greed can bring people down. I want to share a few quotes and sayings that have guided me through many projects and long-term relationships because their call to action works and shows your willingness to serve others. It enables your long-term relationships to flourish and last. They don’t see your greed because they see your interest in their success as your success. Here’s the first one from the founder of Ralston Purina; “Catch a passion for helping others, and a richer life comes back to you.” When your focus is on elevating others, you, in turn, elevate yourself. We are at our best when providing a valuable service to others. As the late great Earl Nightingale said, “Our rewards in life are in direct proportion to our service.” What are you contributing to the success of others around you? Many sources have said it many times: “You can get anything you want in this life if you just help enough other people get what they want.”

Ego. Many years ago, I spoke with Ken Blanchard, co-author of The One Minute Manager. He told me the acronym for ego was “Edging God Out.” It is an apt description that thinks the world revolves around us. I think many people with big egos feel that it’s essential to maintain your success and show how proud you are of what you’ve accomplished. But later in life, you realize that replacing your ego with quiet confidence is much more effective, such as talking less about what you’ve

done and focusing more on the goals and desires of those around you. There’s a lot to say about someone who listens well and has that inner confidence that grounds them and makes people open up to them. Just because you’re not talking doesn’t mean you lose control of the conversation. It’s the opposite if you position it right.

Two Keys to Success:

Humility. I think this quote says it all by one of the greatest basketball coaches that has ever lived… “Humility is the true key to success. Successful people lose their way at times. They often embrace and overindulge from the fruits of success. Humility halts this arrogance and self-indulging trap. Humble people share the credit and wealth, remaining focused and hungry to continue the journey of success.” - Rick Pitino

Action. Kenan talked about the fact that you can pray all you want but there is still a time that you have to dive in and take action to make things happen. I’ve seen how preparation and action have contributed to achievement over the years as essential for the keys to success, but I’m still boggled by the amount of new knowledge and intelligence that action brings to the table. Yes, they are both invaluable but I now believe in the long run what Kenan believes that action is omnipotent. Take the bumblebee as an example. Short and stubby, the bumblebee doesn’t look very flight-worthy. Indeed, in the 1930’s, French entomologist August Magnam even noted that the insect’s flight is actually impossible, a notion that has stuck in popular consciousness since then. We now know that physics and aerodynamics can explain how the bumblebee flies but the bumblebee never knew that and did so anyway.

Learn from Kenan. Replace greed and ego with humility and action to pave a path that enhances your long-term success.
