Verona Kids Rock— Once Again

reen Hill Inc., a premier senior living residence located in West Orange has earned a Five-Star rating from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which rates Green Hill as one of the top-rated senior living and nursing residences in New Jersey. Concurrently, Green Hill has earned SAGECare Platinum Certification from SAGEUSA for completing a comprehensive provider training program for LGBT older adults and their caregivers, and cultural competency training on subjects related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Green Hill is the only residential senior care provider in the area certified with SAGECare Platinum Status.

he non-profit group Verona Kids Rock is proof that you can make a difference at any age. Started in June 2016 by seven-year-old Anna Belle Lilley of Verona, the group has grown to include a number of children working hard to help their community. Over the past year, they Sarah Tevlin, Anna Belle Lilley and McKenzie Bailey, members of Verona Kids Rock have held lemonade stands fundraisers, visited nursing homes, cleaned up trails, and donated to animal shelters, among other things. The kids continue to think of how they can help others through their acts of kindness.

G

Green Hill’s Five-Star service includes the transformation of the entire community to incorporate the principals of person-directed care, especially the Green House Homes dedicated to long term care, and short term rehabilitation that foster individual selfdetermination and personal preferences in a home like setting. “The most natural of next steps is specialized training to provide a welcoming home and person directed life and health care for our growing LGBT elder community,” said Lazartic.

The group’s efforts of doing good and helping those in need were accomplished once again this year on March 25, when they created their own small walk at Verona Park to raise money for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. The event, which was in honor of Anna Belle’s classmate Maisie Skibola, raised $400. The kids had fun walking, carrying balloons, and singing songs along the way, all while giving back. Anna Belle and Verona Kids Rock have touched many in the community this past year, thanks to their big smiles and helping hands.

My Sibling & My Pal Dolls Tell Educational Stories

W

hen Loretta Boronat of West Caldwell launched My Sibling Dolls in the fall of 2007, her love of sewing and passion for spreading autism awareness were combined. Having a son with autism, she knew the importance of educating others about people with disabilities, especially siblings of individuals with autism or Down syndrome. Her My Sibling Dolls feature a collection of characters that have siblings with developmental differences. Each doll comes with a specially written story that teaches the challenges and rewards of living with a sibling who learns and grows differently. In 2009, Boronat expanded her business with My Pal dolls, which come with booklets that address enriching themes for children, such as caring for their peers and being healthy. My Sibling and My Pal mostly specialize in boy dolls, as boys too are affected by disabilities and should be able to have a doll they can love and care for. Learn more about Loretta’s story and shop for your own doll at mysiblingdolls.com.

Shannon Aronson and David Silverstrom, DDS By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein This month, we are pleased to introduce our readers to the Short Hills husband and wife team Shannon Aronson and David Silverstrom, DDS, the co-founders of Solstice 620 Foundation. They are just returning from their second grueling nine day medical/dental mission to Guatemala. The trip required a police escorted, seven hour drive—deep into the mountains to where the Solstice 620 team treated more than 450 impoverished people, most of whom were children.

What is the mission of Solstice 620? Shannon: The mission of Solstice 620 is to create sustainable improvement in the lives of people in need by connecting them with professionals who are eager to donate their time, expertise, skills and unique abilities. David and I have found that most people are aware of what they are uniquely good at and genuinely want to do whatever they can to help others.

How did Solstice 620 choose Guatemala? Shannon: Close friends of ours from Canada had been traveling to the Merendon Mountains in Guatemala with the Canadian Central American Relief Effort (CCAMRE) for about 12 years, in order to provide dental services to the indigenous people living there. They would tell us about the living conditions—10 to 12 people in one-room mud huts with no electricity and no access to clean water. We decided to make Guatemala our organization’s first project. David: Shannon saw an opportunity for Solstice 620 to add a medical component to CCAMRE’s work. We gathered up doctors, nurses, hygienists and ample medical supplies to treat the people there. Every morning we would shoo away the roaming chickens and set up M.A.S.H.-style clinics where people would line up outside in the 100-degree heat. Shannon: The trip was horrible and exhilarating at the same time. The illness and dental decay resulting from the extreme poverty is deeply disturbing, but you get to make a positive difference in someone’s life.

Why did you establish Solstice 620? David: It was Shannon’s idea upon our marriage two years ago, that we set up this foundation to honor our commitment to each other and to use our partnership to make a positive impact on the world. We were married on June 20, 2015, which happened to be the summer solstice. We liked the idea of incorporating our wedding date and the symbolism of the sun rising, bringing light and warmth to the world, in our foundation’s name.

Aronson and Silverstrom plan to expand the foundation’s reach to other areas and issues in the future. When not doing foundation work or charitable community activities, they are busy with their careers. Shannon is a realtor with Keller Williams Premier Properties and David has a dental practice in Livingston, The Silverstrom Group. Those interested in donating their time or resources should contact Shannon at 973-214-0691.

At Your SERVICE

Creating Magnificent Landscapes Across the State From design to construction, Picture Perfect Landscapes has you covered By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photo by Dan Epstein Craig Slaaen at Parkway Lofts in Bloomfield, one of his projects

L

ooking for expert landscape design, meticulous attention to detail and super friendly service? Craig Slaaen and his company, Picture Perfect Landscapes, can provide all of that and more. Before starting Picture Perfect Landscapes in 1993, Slaaen majored in landscape design and architecture and became a certified horticulturist. His passion, has cultivated for years. “I’ve been in the landscape industry since I was a kid,” he admits. Picture Perfect Landscapes offers a full range of landscaping services from landscape design to construction, installation and maintenance. The one-stop shop has top-notch resources including computerized landscape design imaging and an inhouse licensed landscape architect. The company services both commercial and residential markets throughout northern and central New Jersey. In addition, its sister company, CTS group, provides outdoor facility maintenance for commercial properties. The company performs other services, including landscape lighting, snow removal, irrigation, hardscaping and even outdoor living spaces. “In June, it’s not too late for planting. However, the summertime is also a good time to do hardscaping. We can even design an outdoor living environment for you from start to finish— everything from the patio to installing appliances and furniture,” said Slaaen, whose company also is a dealer for lawn furniture. “It’s also a great time to get a head start on design plans for post-Labor Day weekend lawn repair, servicing and more.”

Slaaen admits he is a very hands-on owner who is on top of each project, making sure each one exceeds standards—the customer is his first priority. He has this advice on choosing a landscape company. “Choose someone that makes you feel the most comfortable and has your best interest at heart,” said Slaaen. “You need someone willing to spend time with you to go over the project, any and all changes you are looking for and listen to what you want.”

Pediatric OT & Speech Therapy in a Fun Environment By Cynthia Burns

I

t can be daunting for parents to learn their child requires occupational or speech therapy. Lillian Dollinger, Director, Metropolitan Speech and Language Center and Dana Blumberg, Director, Positive Steps Pediatric Occupational Therapy Center, understand the concerns parents have and the challenges children face. The Centers are conveniently located next door to each other. The directors share a team approach philosophy. “We create a positive and fun environment,” says Dollinger. In addition to individual therapy, we have Social Skills groups (3-15), “Toddler Talk” mommy and me classes (1½-2½) and our weekly free Baby Classes (6-17 mos). “Our staff communicates with other members of the treatment team including other therapists, psychologists and teachers,” notes Blumberg. Positive Steps offers free monthly parent workshops. In addition to individual therapy, Positive Steps offers a Summer of Sensory weekly camp to stimulate peer interactions and to address sensory processing skills, as well as an ongoing Sensory Socialization Group.

NJ Spine & Joint Offers Revolutionary Cold Laser Treatments

Reduces Pain and Speeds Healing with No Side Effects By Martta Kelly, photos by Dan Epstein

W

hether it is a nagging backache that won’t go away or a recent knee injury from an impromptu basketball game, the office of Dr. Glenn Sorrentino of NJ Spine & Joint in Cedar Grove offers expertise and experience in helping patients become—and stay—pain free. He answered some questions about his practice:

Who is your typical patient? We treat all ages, from children to teenagers to senior citizens. No matter what your age, our aim is to correct your problem, get rid of your pain, and get you back to living your life.

You mentioned cold laser therapy. What is special about it? Sorrentino: It’s the most advanced technology today that reduces pain, speeds healing, and has no side effects. It is used widely by many major sports teams, including the Giants, the New Jersey Devils, and all the big-time college athletes. Not many practices offer this technology or are properly trained in using it.

How does it work? The cold laser reduces pain and inflammation while accelerating healing, encouraging cell growth, stimulating nerve function, and reducing scar tissue. It also works quickly. We get athletes back in the game much faster than typical therapy can. What else sets you apart? We don’t just treat body parts, we treat the whole person. We are very big on biomechanics and balance. Often, pain in one area is caused by imbalances or weakness in other areas. For example, knee pain can be caused by the hips being out of alignment. Also, we are diversified, meaning that we offer chiropractic, medical massage, and physical therapy, as well as medical care and nutrition. Having a combination of specialties helps us meet our patients’ needs more effectively. We’re a one-stop shop.

The Sunniest of Advice

B

efore you slather on the sunscreen, soak up about 10 minutes of sun. Shocked? That’s the advice from many doctors, who say that lack of pure sunshine may be the prime reason that so many of us don’t get enough Vitamin D. The number of people lacking this vitamin has doubled in the past decade. And the “sunshine” vitamin helps us absorb calcium, along with its many other health benefits. Why are so many more people lacking in Vitamin D? Experts say it’s because we spend more time indoors, and then spritz on loads of sunscreen before stepping out, in a wise move to ward off skin cancer and wrinkles. Sunscreen is vital, especially in the summer. But 10-15 minutes of sun isn’t likely to give you anything but a jolt of unadulterated joy—and plenty of Vitamin D. Just avoid the tanning salon and the hours of 10am-2pm, when the sun is strongest. Can’t take the sun? Enjoy foods high in Vitamin D, such as fatty fish and fortified milk, or pop an over-the-counter supplement.

Spiralizing Vegetables More Than a Flash in the Pan Frozen Alternatives

F

or fans of ice cream, ice pops and other frozen treats, frozen fresh fruit can be a delicious and healthy alternative. Love banana spits? A frozen banana is a great stand-in—after peeling, store in a plastic bag or wrapped in plastic wrap. Have a penchant for snacking? Leave a bowl of grapes in the freezer for a quick bite. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and clementines, are also refreshing when frozen—a perfect substitute for the classic orange Popsicle. Even lemons can be frozen and used for flavoring cold drinks.

E

veryone knows that vegetables are good for weight management, yet eating enough of them every day can be difficult. Boiling and roasting them becomes mundane. Now, carrots, turnips, beetroots, cucumbers and zucchinis are being “spiralized” into pasta-like forms using julienne peelers and spiralizing machines, so sneaking them into a daily diet has never been easier. The idea behind spiralizing is to chop a vegetable as little as possible in order to keep its nutritional value intact. Spiralized vegetables have a similar texture and consistency as regular pasta and noodles. Using this method, tastebuds think they are indulging in the carb-laden original, while the waistline shows differently. Spiralized vegetables and fruits are helpful not only to regulate blood sugar levels but also for those who have autoimmune diseases, such as Celiac’s. Those who subscribe to a gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or Paleo lifestyle likewise will enjoy this exciting food trend.

Relax & Relieve Stress Through Reflexology

R

eflexology is becoming an increasingly popular holistic health practice, as individuals are turning to it because of its many benefits. Renea of A Tranquil Journey in Little Falls refers to reflexology as an art and a science. “The science is the intensive study, knowledge and devotion to all the techniques I has developed; while the artistic part is the dedication and caring for each client,” she states.

When asked what exactly is reflexology, she responded: “The technique involves applying pressure to the feet and hands in order to produce changes in pain. The theory is that certain points in our feet and hands are connected energetically to our organs and body parts. By applying pressure, energy blockages are removed, promoting health.” According to reflexologists, pressure on the reflex points also helps to balance the nervous system and stimulates the release of endorphins that help to reduce pain and stress. A typical reflexology session lasts 30 to 60 minutes. “During a session you will experience a serene, tranquil setting, while lying back in a comfortable recliner and relaxing to calming music,” states Renea. Each session is customized using information about your health and lifestyle to benefit the clients’ specific needs.

Reflexology’s whole-body benefits make it the perfect therapy to try. • It can reduce tension and increases relaxation. • It can revitalize your body and increase energy. • It returns your body to a state of balance and controls pain. • It treats the whole body: head, neck, ears, back, shoulders, arms, hands, legs and feet. • It helps relieve symptoms caused by: arthritis & osteopathic problems, asthma, allergies, sinusitis, back problems, sciatica, cancer, diabetes, digestion, menopause and more.

Taking Care of the Skin You’re In Clean, Exfoliate, Moisturize and More Soon you’ll be shedding your bulky winter wardrobe for t-shirts, tanks and shorts, exposing your body’s largest organ—your skin. While protecting it from the sun is especially critical during the warmer months, keeping it healthy all year long is just as important. Here we give you the low-down on cleansers, scrubs, facials and more from the tried-and-true to what’s new.

M

ost of us use bar soaps, many of which contain sodium lauryl sulfate, which tends to strip away moisture and dry out the skin. For supple skin, try cleansers that contain such ingredients as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and plant-based oils, which help to retain the skin’s natural oils, hold onto water or provide much-needed moisture. Removing dead skin cells through body polishing—or exfoliation—also promotes healthy skin by allowing the growth of new skin cells for a clearer, smoother look. Exfoliate once or twice a week with hydrating, alcohol-free products that contain glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid (the last also can help prevent breakouts). You can use facial cleansing brushes or at-home microdermabrasion cleansing systems as well. When it comes to moisturizing, many creams and lotions are multi-purposed, with elements like shea butter, dimethicone, alpha hydroxy acids and broad-spectrum sunscreens that lock in moisture and prevent dryness, while sloughing off dead skin cells and protecting against UVA and UBA rays. Still, with all the products available these days, many tried-and-true skin care options remain. Among them are petroleum jelly (commonly known as Vaseline) and aloe vera. Petroleum jelly is oil-based and can serve as a daily moisturizer or as a lubricant to soothe dry skin. Aloe vera also benefits dry skin, but goes further to help heal rashes, burns, insect bites and superficial wounds, and may even offer antiaging properties that stimulate collagen and lighten dark spots.

HEALTH Profile Dr. Janet Neigel

Dr. Janet Neigel Discusses Eyelid Surgery to Improve Eye Appearance or Functional Problems

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, remains one of the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States for both men and women, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, with nearly 170,000 surgeries performed in 2015.

By Martta Kelly, Photo by Dan Epstein

W

hile most people consider eyelid surgery solely for cosmetic reasons, such as eliminating loose or sagging skin or under eye puffiness, many patients seek eyelid surgery for practical reasons. “I typically see two types of patients for eyelid surgery,” said Dr. Janet Neigel, an ophthalmologist specializing in oculofacial surgery for more than 30 years. “There are patients who want a fresh and more rested, youthful appearance. But I also treat patients who have droopy eyelids that touch their lashes and therefore, interfere with their vision.” In private practice since 1986, Neigel Center for Cosmetic and Laser Surgery relocated to Florham Park in 2014. The new location also offers the convenience for same day surgery with Eltra Surgical Center at 254 Columbia Turnpike. Eyelid surgery, she explained, is an outpatient procedure. Patients are usually in surgery for 2 to 3 hours and are resting comfortably at home a few hours later. The recovery time

54

Suburban Essex

following blepharoplasty is fairly short, she added. “There is some bruising and swelling the day after but it disappears quickly,” Dr. Neigel said. “By a week to ten days later, most of the swelling is gone.” Patients can usually return to work after the sutures are removed, typically in 7 to 10 days, she said. For those patients who still have residual bruising, concealer may be needed for a short time. The cost of eyelid surgery varies, depending on the type and complexity of the procedure, Dr. Neigel explained. Fees can range from $3,000 to $6,000, not including costs for anesthesia and the facility. “If a patient’s vision is impaired, most insurance carriers will cover the cost of the upper eyelid surgery,” she said, adding that vision impairment is documented with a visual field test exam and photographs.

Cooking Essentials A Peek Inside a Professional Chef’s Kitchen (BPT)

F

rom spices and oils to gadgets and gizmos, it seems like there are always new, trendy items that you should add to your kitchen. Trying to separate the handy from the hype, however, can be a timeconsuming and expensive process. Professional chefs know not everything is worthy of space in their kitchens, but it’s not always easy for home cooks to figure out what they need and what they don’t. That’s why Devin Alexander, New York Times Bestselling Author and professional chef, gives a peek inside her kitchen. Find out what’s really worth your while, as she shares the top items she uses, as well as recommends to her clients to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Chef Alexander’s top kitchen must-have’s include:

Reusable oil sprayer: An oil sprayer allows you

to cook with fats in a healthful and efficient way. You can fill the sprayer with your choice of oil—from olive to canola to whatever suits your current taste preference and cooking needs.

Kitchen scale: You don’t have to weigh everything,

but a countertop scale is a handy tool that can help you sustain your healthy eating goals. It’s great for measuring portions of lean meats, seafood and cheeses, so you can stay in check while whipping up recipes or prepping snacks.

Truvia Nectar: “My favorite liquid sweetener is blended with stevia leaf extract and honey, and has 50 percent fewer calories than sugar,” says Alexander. “It’s twice as sweet so you only need half as much when you’re adding it to tea or drizzling it on yogurt. I also love to use Truvia Nectar in salad dressings, marinades and cocktails.” Learn more at www.truvia.com/nectar.

Oatmeal: Oatmeal isn’t just a morning food, but a healthy

way to add texture to recipes. Use it in meatballs and baked goods for a tasty, whole-grain boost.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon is an extremely versatile pantry

essential. Sprinkle the spice here and there to liven up your favorite beverages and recipes without too many added calories.

Cocoa powder: “I’m a huge chocolate lover! Using 100

percent cocoa powder, which has minimal calories and some fiber to boot, is a great way to get your chocolate fix while staying fit,” Alexander says “You can add it to oatmeal and sauces, but the possibilities are endless.”

Instant coffee: Did you know instant coffee can be used for more than just your morning jump-start? It’s a quick and easy way to give your protein shakes a java-flavored makeover. Stocking your home kitchen with the right items is essential for achieving your healthy eating goals.

Diamond MINDS

Above the Strings And then, when you think you have learned everything… “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

Barry Farber

—John Wooden (1910–2010) UCLA Basketball Coach

T

he most successful people in every field know they can never fully master their craft; there is always something new to learn. There is never a time when you can say, “Ah, now I know everything about this subject.” One man who is a perfect example of continuous learning was former master violin maker Richard Menzel. He spent more than 30 years as an engineer at the Lockheed Corporation. yet he always made time for his love of music. When he left Lockheed to open his shop, he continued his quest for knowledge. Menzel used the standard tools of his trade, but often invented new tools to study areas of violin engineering no one else had explored. He created an instrument to measure the angle of your arm when you’re moving the bow from string to string so that you can gauge and improve your form. He also invented a machine to study the properties of horsehair used in making bows, asking, “How much pressure does

it take to break this hair? How much does it stretch? How much does it expand over time? Nobody knows, but I want to find out.” I remember once being challenged to see if I could learn to play the violin in 30 days. The violin Is known for being one of the most unforgiving instruments to learn. After seeking advice from Menzel, he advised me to take the violin home and for 15 minutes each day, take the bow and put it a quarter inch above the string going back-and-forth from one end of the horsehair to the other very slowly, ensuring to keep the space between the bow hair and the string a quarter inch in

distance apart at all time. By doing this exercise, I realized I was training my hand, arm and muscles to move in a specific way. Then when I played the violin string with the bow, the tone and quality was much superior than before. Performing this tedious exercise helped me enjoy playing the violin a lot more. Menzel taught me a valuable lesson about the fundamentals of learning and how important they are to creating a strong foundation in music, sports, business or any endeavor. He taught me that successful people do the things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do.
