Newark’s First Avenue Renamed Ortenza Calandra Plaza

T

his past May, the city of Newark held a ceremony remembering Ortenza Calandra for her impact on the city by renaming First Avenue in her honor. The additional signage on First Avenue now reads as “Ortenza Calandra Plaza.” Anthony Calandra spoke in gratitude on behalf of his family. “I want to thank everyone, the Councilman, the city, everyone who’s made this possible for my mom.” The original Calandra’s bakery, known for its French and Italian breads and pastries, remains open today with a similar spirit more than 50 years later, when Luciano and Ortega Calandra started the business in 1962. Calandra Enterprises, comprised of bakeries, restaurants, hotels and apartments is now run by second and third generation family members, and has more than 700 employees.

an a child alone find justice? The judge-appointed Advocates from Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) help determine the decisions that have lifechanging impacts on children in foster care. North Caldwell resident Mitchell Decter, Esq., believes every child needs an Advocate—someone who champions for that child’s welfare. Decter, Co-President of the Board of Trustees, CASA for Children of Essex County, Inc., discusses one of the largest and most innovative CASA programs in New Jersey.

As President, can you explain the mission of CASA for Children? Mitchell: The mission of CASA is to ensure that every child in the foster care system has a voice. We strive to promote the welfare of children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect or abandonment by providing a safety net of support, advocacy and mentorship.

What services does Essex CASA offer foster children? Mitchell: CASA offers several advocacy programs for foster care children, designed to help them from infancy through young adulthood: a social and emotional foundation program for children newborn to age five; Disability Advocacy for children needing these services; and, a Fostering Futures program to assist older children transition to adulthood. The volunteer Advocates are an extension of the court and provide valuable insight into each child’s needs while they are in foster care and for the long term. Advocates become the voice of the child in court. We currently serve about 600 children a year in our program, and last year we had 253 Advocates.

What does an Essex CASA volunteer do? How can one get involved? Mitchell: Advocates visit homes, conduct school interviews, and get to know the children. The Advocates create the pathway for the success of the child within the foster care system. CASA is always looking for dedicated community volunteers to serve many children needing foster care. Our volunteers are citizens from all walks of life. Flexible year-round training programs accommodate the volunteers’ schedules. Upcoming training sessions will begin on September 13 and October 25. CASA will host its 2nd Annual Homeward Bound Walk on October 15, 2017, beginning at 8:30 am at the Boat House Pavilion in West Orange. Families are invited to participate in the children’s activities and to learn about the organization.

To volunteer, offer a donation or for more information: CASA for Children of Essex County, 212 Washington Street, Room 912, Newark. Contact: 973-622-1110, info@casaessex.org.

In The Marketplace

Creative Design Solutions Set in Stone By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein

E

lena and Tom Tsatsaros, coowners of Apex Marble & Tile, together have built a locally recognized business that boasts two showrooms—one for natural and engineered stone designs and the other for a wide selection of tile. “What is different about Apex Marble & Tile is that we offer superior customer service and we stand by our work,” says Elena. Tom honed his skills as an apprentice with a master stone craftsman in his native Greece, and their expert staff of craftsmen excel at design, fabrication and installation. The staff provides their expertise to assist clients in designing exterior and interior spaces including: kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, outdoor BBQs, and laundry rooms. Recognizing that no two jobs are alike, each project is unique and customized for clients. Stone, with rich hues and striking gradations, is imported from Noelle J. Bocker, throughout the world including the Elena Tsatsaros & United States. A broad selection of Marc Lombardo marble, granite, quartzite, travertine, limestone and onyx are on display. Customers may also choose from durable engineered stones including: Caesarstone, Silestone, Zodiaq, Cambria and Pentalquartz. “It’s about function, aesthetics and budget,” says Elena. “It’s also about education!” she adds. Apex eagerly helps clients to understand the differences between natural and engineered stone and help them to choose a suitable material for their lifestyle. “We aim for a high level of customer satisfaction while meeting design needs.” Elena notes that as new materials are developed and brought to market, she and her staff learn everything there is to know about them before samples reach the showroom. The staff is pleased to work with clients, contractors and interior designers. Whether drawn to classic designs or trendy surfaces, clients are assured of a creatively coordinated makeover with stone and tile products that offer solutions for all their design needs.

At Apex Marble & Tile, each project is fulfilled with confidence and a focus on client satisfaction. All questions are answered and clients receive valuable information about post-installation care to ensure that their new surface looks as good in 10 years as it does at installation. Always focused on clients, Apex’s motto is “Who can we help today?”

Fun Ways to Get Kids to Enjoy Math

F

or some kids, one of the toughest parts of the back-to-school season is getting back into the swing of math class. You can help ease the transition this fall and beyond by making math a wholly integrated part of the day.

Math plays a hidden role in so many aspects of daily life. By pointing out these connections in ways that are fun and engaging, you can help make math one of your child’s favorite subjects—or at least less feared.

Bake your lesson plan

Money math

Learning fractions? Use pies and cookies to demonstrate the concept visually. It’s a tasty and fun way to learn how fractions and percentages work.

At home, use spare change to teach children simple addition and subtraction. Set a timer and see if they can make proper change in record time. Ask kids to solve increasingly difficult problems, and when they answer correctly, give them the change as a reward.

Calculator fun Get out the calculator and help children explore patterns. First to third-graders can add or subtract the same number repeatedly. Children will observe patterns that emerge and get a better sense of arithmetic. Children can even make their own “pattern puzzles,” which are number sequences where some numbers are omitted. For example: 7, 14, _, _, 35, _, 49. The activity can make addition and multiplication more comprehensible. Look for a model that will be useful for the next several years of math class, such as the fx-300ES from Casio, which offers 2-line display and 240 functions. Free educational resources and activities to try on the calculator can be found at CasioEducation.com.

Make it interdisciplinary Leverage your children’s favorite school subjects and hobbies to pique their interest in math. If they love reading, help them select literature that celebrates math. If they find history fascinating, have them read about famous mathematicians and scientists who used math to make discoveries. For young athletes, there are always ways to turn that pick-up game in the park into a math lesson. Angles, distances, times and averages all figure into sports. Using these concepts in an applied way can make math more interesting. Help kids get off to a great start this back-to-school season by making math fun and engaging. — StatePoint photo source: (c) darko64 - Fotolia.com

It is also important to them that their work is grounded in research regarding how people learn and the learning differences that cause students to struggle. They begin their understanding by looking through a neuropsychological lens based on decades of research on learning and cognition. This is just the first step. It is important that they understand both who their students are as learners, as well as who they are as people. WPS students have some notable gifts, and their individual approach allows them to explore and develop these gifts. Everything they do is based on this in-depth understanding of each individual student.

hiropractor, Dr. Sean McLaughlin and acupuncturist, Dr. Morgan Reade enjoy working together so much that they do it in two different locations—in Madison at Advanced Acupuncture and at Fairfield Wellness and Physical Therapy (FFWPT) in Fairfield. McLaughlin explains, “There is just a connection between what we do. Chiropractic works the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems while Acupuncture helps with pain and muscle issues, as well as fertility, digestive, and mental health.” McLaughlin and Reade specialize in fertility treatments in the Madison location. Dr. Reade states, “I can stimulate a woman’s hormone production and ovulation with needles, while Dr. McLaughlin will perform a technique that opens up her hips.” Physical Therapist James Bonardi joins the team in Fairfield at FFWPT, located in the 360 Fitness Performance and Sports Facility. As one might expect, the FFWPT location sees plenty of athletes. McLaughlin notes, “We treat a lot of people who practice CrossFit, in addition to NFL pros, Olympic hopefuls and student-athletes.” Athlete injuries are often specific to their sport. “Football players tend to have hip flexor issues, while baseball players and CrossFitters often need core and shoulder strengthening exercises.” Challenging the common assumption that chiropractors and physical therapists operate independently, Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Bonardi often work together on the same patient. When they work on athletes, they frequently utilize one of their favorite forms of treatment, A.R.T. (active release technique), to restore core musculature function. The Fairfield Wellness and Advanced Acupuncture clientele are by no means limited to athletes; or even adults. The team treats children for issues including

colic, muscle spasms, swimmer’s ear and respiratory difficulties. McLaughlin says, “We actually love working with babies and children. Kids bounce back quickly from so many issues.” Patient treatment doesn’t end at physical therapy and acupuncture. An occupational therapist, massage therapist, and orthopedic surgeons frequently collaborate on customized treatment plans. The professional team offers nutritional plans and dietary guidelines for an overall healing of mind, body and soul. Along with conventional

treatments, patients often rave about the lighthearted, upbeat environment where laughter ultimately is the best medicine. Reade adds, “To really get better a patient will often need to make lifestyle changes. Needles and Chinese herbs can take away pain or help calm the hormones that are active in a high-stress situation, but the patient also needs to address the underlying causes of his pain or stress.” McLaughlin concludes, “The amount of extensive knowledge we can share with our patients is amazing and really rewarding.”

nowing the warning signs of a mini-stroke could help save a life. A survey conducted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association shows onethird of United States adults have had symptoms consistent with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a ministroke, but only 3 percent called 911 for help. “Ignoring any stroke signs could be a deadly mistake,” said Mitch Elkind, M.D., chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee. “Only a formal medical diagnosis with brain imaging can determine whether you’re having a TIA or a stroke.”

The survey showed 35 percent of respondents experienced at least one sign of a TIA or mini-stroke, such as sudden trouble speaking or a severe headache with no known cause. According to the online survey, those who suffered symptoms were more likely to wait it out, rest or take medicine rather than call 911. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability in the United States and among the top five causes of death. However, with proper, timely medical attention, stroke is largely treatable. The faster you are treated, the more likely you are to have a positive outcome.

While the symptoms are the same, the difference between a TIA and a stroke is that the blockage is temporary, lasting between a few minutes and 24 hours. People who suffer a TIA, sometimes called a warning stroke, are more likely to have a stroke within 90 days, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Elkind said anyone who experiences a stroke warning sign that appears suddenly, whether it goes away or not, should call 911 immediately. This could improve the chances of an accurate diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Stroke symptoms come on suddenly with no known cause and may include confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; or a severe headache. 5-Star Rated • Strawberries help you stay sharp. A recent study in the Annals of Neurology suggests that eating strawberries more than twice a week appears to delay cognitive aging by up to two and a half years. • Loaded with nutrients. Strawberries pack a lot of healthy properties into a small package. Each berry is full of beneficial antioxidants and nutrients, including potassium, folate and fiber. • Sweet without the sugar. The sweet taste of strawberries makes them a natural dessert topping, and strawberries are also low in calories and sugar—one serving of eight strawberries contains just 45 calories! • A delicious source of vitamin C. When you think vitamin C, think strawberries. One serving of eight strawberries has more vitamin C than an orange, topping out at 140 percent of the recommended daily value. It’s the perfect power-packed boost that you can add to any meal or cold remedy.

• A healthy choice for diabetics. The American Diabetes Association has identified berries, including strawberries, as a perfect component of a diabetes meal plan. This is because strawberries have a low glycemic index and are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants and dietary fiber. • Cholesterol fighter. Lowering your cholesterol is a common goal for many Americans these days, and strawberries can help. In addition to being packed with antioxidants and fiber, strawberries are also rich in phytochemicals, which have been shown to reduce overall cholesterol levels. In addition, the potassium found in strawberries may help control blood pressure and fight strokes. It’s easy to see why you should eat eight strawberries each day. Grab a handful today—your body and taste buds will be glad you did. Visit www.californiastrawberries.com to learn more about strawberries and it’s health benefits.

Cooperman Family Pavilion to Usher in New Era of Family-Centered Care at Saint Barnabas Medical Center

S

aint Barnabas Medical Center, a flagship facility of RWJBarnabas Health, will unveil a soaring, five-story, 241,000 square-foot addition to the Livingston medical center on September 6. Saint Barnabas Medical Center, renowned for its high-quality clinical care and medical services, received a $25 million gift from Leon and Toby Cooperman, which provided the catalyst for the construction of the vast expansion to the medical center, to be named the Cooperman Family Pavilion. “The extraordinary Cooperman Family Pavilion exemplifies the remarkable care that is provided at this award-winning medical center,” said Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health. The beautiful, natural lightinfused building reflects evidence-based approaches to promoting healing and improving care. The pavilion will encompass 114 new private rooms; an expansive 56-bassinet Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); many of the outpatient diagnostic services; a central registration area; and a same-day surgery suite. A new, three-story parking garage also has been built to accommodate more than 400 vehicles. Patients, family members, community members, physicians and staff all provided their suggestions and input design details include curb-free showers to prevent falls, acoustical

materials to lessen noise and hybrid operating suites that allow surgeons to transfer easily from minimally invasive to open procedures. The NICU will have a series of single rooms in a pod design that allows families to bond with their baby within a few steps of nearby medical staff. There also will be two new family rooms that offer parents the opportunity to “sleep over” and care for their baby within the hospital environment prior to their discharge. For more information on the Cooperman Family Pavilion, visit www.rwjbhinfo.org/Cooperman.aspx?furl=cooperman. Dining

THE PERFECT PAIRING:

Amarone Wine & Prime Strip Steak

A

good steak and glass of red wine offer a delightful traditional pairing. A way to elevate this experience is to choose an Amarone della Valpolicella, a traditional red wine from Italy, to accompany a perfect cut of steak with high marbling content for more flavor.

Why an Amarone? Considered the gentle giant of Italian red wines, Amarone has bold yet subtle characteristics, which pair nicely with a nice cut of NY strip steak. Produced with indigenous grape varieties (Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara) of the Venetian regions, Amarone wines are full-bodied, rich, well-balanced red wines. Since Roman times, winemakers have been using a specialized technique called the Appassimento method, which consists of drying the grapes on straw mats during the winter months to concentrate the fruit’s aromas and flavors. An iconic 200-year old Amarone producer, Masi Agricola, known around the world for the quality of their wines produced over seven generations, has revolutionized the Appassimento technique. The winery has blended historic winemaking methods with modern research and technology: making their own selection of proprietary yeast, replacing straw mats

with bamboo racks and drying the grapes in a temperatureand humidity-controlled environment, and conducting a double fermentation process. The result is an offering of five Amarone wines rich in history and personality. One of the acclaimed wines of the portfolio is the 2011 Masi Agricola Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella, with a suggested retail price of $63.99. This deep ruby-red wine has powerful, complex aromas of dried plums, flavors of baked cherries, chocolate and cinnamon. It tastes dry on the palate, with a soft and bright acidity; the delicate, structured tannins precede a long finish.

Choose the Right Cut Select a rich cut with visible marbling, which will have a higher fat content to pair with bold red wine. A good option would be a New York or Kansas City strip steak. This cut is affordable, has texture and is flavorful. Purchase a strip steak with a thickness of 1 inch. Season with salt and pepper then grill on high for 2-4 minutes. Decrease heat to medium temperature until desired degree of doneness is achieved,

such as medium rare or well done. Pair your strip steak with an Amarone wine. It is full-bodied with balanced tannins, that will stand up beautifully to this flavorful cut. The high tannins will also act as a palate cleanser during the meal. D

uring its long and rich history, Port has earned an army of enthusiasts, who have discovered many ways to enjoy this fortified wine, from serving it with dessert to using it as a base in elegant cocktails.

One of the oldest Port houses is Taylor Fladgate, which is celebrating its 325th anniversary this year. Established in 1692, Taylor Fladgate commemorates this milestone by releasing a nod to Port’s history: Taylor Fladgate 325th Anniversary Reserve Tawny Port, a special blend of fine oak-matured Ports selected for their depth and richness of flavor, and offered in a 1692-style Ingredients: bottle that will appeal to history and wine buffs alike. • 2 oz. Open Monday through Saturday 9am-6pm, Closed Sundays

Produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the Northern provinces of Portugal, the first shipments of Port were recorded in 1678, taking its name from the coastal city of Oporto from which it is traditionally exported. To this day, Port is considered one of the oldest protected wines in the world, and this sweet, smooth wine created by adding a neutral distilled spirit to the rich red wines of the region harkens back to the tastes of the 17th century British gentry, who were Port’s first fans.

“Our history is often the history of Port itself, because in 325 years we have always been in the front line,” says Adrian Bridge, managing director of Taylor Fladgate. “Port is one of the great classics in the wine world today, partly due to Taylor Fladgate’s tireless work throughout generations.”

Traditionally, Port wines are served towards the end of the meal with cheese, as a dessert wine, or as an after-dinner drink. It is popular to enjoy a slightly chilled glass of tawny port with nut-based desserts like pecan pie or biscotti, and can also be enjoyed in a cocktail: For more information and recipes, please visit taylor.pt. This season, celebrate Port’s rich history and complex flavor. There are a wide variety of styles of Port and each has its own characteristic flavors. —StatePoint Photo source: (c) Nader Kouri

Diamond Minds

The Greatest Gift: The Love of Learning Reprinted from April 2010 by request By Barry Farber

S

cientists and psychologists have found that infants can probably start their formal education at a much earlier age than was formerly believed. However, as in everything else, moderation is the key. Knowing that infants can learn sophisticated concepts almost from birth doesn’t mean we have to turn them into full-time students at three months old. The greatest gift a parent can give a child is the love of learning. This can be developed at any stage of life; however, children who love learning from the start have a great advantage over those who must develop it later on in life. Winifred Barnes Conley is a psychotherapist, educator, and president and CEO of the National Learning Laboratory in Bethesda, Maryland. She recommends that the best way for parents to foster a love of learning in their children is by loving it themselves. “We suggest having family learning time,” she says. “While children are doing their homework, the TV should be off. Perhaps classical music could be playing. Parents can be reading, paying bills, or studying for a course they’re taking. That way they’re modeling

learning as well as verbalizing it. It’s what parents do that makes the biggest difference. ” Children will imitate their parents’ actions. Conley tells of one family that came to her because the children would not do their homework. It turned out that the father insisted on watching television from the moment he came home from work until the moment he went to bed. So the children were constantly sneaking away to watch television instead of doing their homework. It wasn’t until the father gave up some of his tube time that the children began to improve their study habits. Fostering the love of learning can, and should, begin long before children ever reach school age. According to Dr. Fred Plum, Chairman of Neurology and Neuroscience, Cornell Medical Center, the reason certain ethnic groups consistently test considerably higher on IQ exams is not because of any difference in brain capacity. It’s because they come from a culture where learning begins early and remains a child’s highest priority through his or her university years.

Learning can begin Barry Farber with the youngest of babies by providing them with new environments, new sounds and voices, new sensory experiences. This stimulation allows them to become familiar with the world around them and to feel free to explore on their own later on. Until the age of fourteen, the brain is like a sponge continually absorbing information. It’s important to establish learning patterns early, when the developing brain is most receptive. “The brain is maximally plastic up to the age of eight,” says Dr. Plum. “Up until then, one can produce serious injury, for example, to the language zones of the brain, yet the child will learn language with the other side of the brain. After the age of eight, it becomes increasingly difficult or even impossible to teach normal language to the non-dominant hemisphere. ” It may well be that the greatest gift we can give our children is the love of learning, but just as important: the knowledge that we do become what we think about all day long.
