Levine, Jacobs Accountant Honored for his Impact
M
ichael H. Karu, a partner at Levine, Jacobs & Company, LLC in Livingston, was recently honored with an award for the impact he has had on the accounting firm’s growth and for its community involvement. The New Jersey Society of CPAs named Karu as a recipient of the prestigious Ovation Award in the Impact category. Michael H. Karu Karu believes that it is only due to the tremendous support of the partners and staff at Levine, Jacobs & Company, LLC, that winning this type of award–which recognizes growth, leadership, and community service–was possible. The firm, which has championed numerous causes over the years, will continue to support the community as a sponsor of Livingston’s “Fall Tune-Up,” a major tournament for youth soccer, and of local Little League teams. According to Karu, “Being a part of the Livingston community is important to us. Levine Jacobs has been in Livingston since we were originally established in 1952. We try to do our part in keeping Livingston as vital and vibrant as possible.” Learn more about Levine, Jacobs & Company, LLC at www.ljcpa.com.

Restaurateur Donates Dinners to The Montclair Inn
T
homas Ma, owner of T.S. Ma Chinese Cuisine, firmly believes in giving back to the community. After sponsoring “The Senior Prom” fundraiser for The Montclair Inn, he realized he could do more than write a check to support the Inn. Once a month Ma has food delivered from his restaurant to the Inn’s residents. Joy Kay, Executive Director of the Inn says, “The meal has become a special treat the residents look forward to each month.” Thomas Ma shares, “It’s my honor to serve them.” The Montclair Inn provides affordable senior communal housing. Operated by the not-for-profit Montclair Shared Housing Association, the fully handicapped-accessible Inn welcomes single residents over the age of 55 who are able to live independently. Residents of the historic house on Hillside Avenue with the wide front porch and big back garden have private rooms and share communal dining and charming common areas.

Named the Beneficiary Charity for the 2019 Suburban Essex Best of Essex Contest By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein
C
ASA For Children of Essex County, (CASA Essex) a program of Court Appointed Special Advocates, appointed by family court judges, which advocates for NJ’s abused and neglected children, from age 0 to 21, is the beneficiary charity for the 2019 Suburban Essex Best of Essex Contest. Through CASA Essex, each child has a dedicated CASA Volunteer who speaks up for them and ensures they do not get lost in the system. CASA Essex has helped over 5,000 children in its 33 years of existence. “A child may go through multiple placements once removed from their home, and a CASA advocate is usually the most consistent person in their life,” says Tamara Harris, Executive Director, CASA Essex. Aside from volunteering, she says people can make donations, attend the Ruby Red Shoe Bash on October 19th at the Grove in Cedar Grove, or participate in other events. They can also recruit volunteers or help spread awareness. Harris calls this supporting the ‘3 As’ – Assets, Advocates and Awareness.
Stephanie Phelan, Executive Assistant, CASA for Children & Tamara Harris, Executive Director, CASA for Children “While many people have seen the CASA video at jury duty, sometimes the best recruitment tool is word of mouth,” says Harris. “We look for ambassadors willing to host events in their homes or businesses, where we can meet their network and speak about CASA.”
“A child may go through multiple placements once removed from their home, and a CASA advocate is usually the most consistent person in their life.”
She adds, “Everyone has currency, whether it’s their network, time, or financial, and each currency purse is unique – but don’t think because you don’t have the time, you can’t make a difference in a child’s life.” Harris says she’s thrilled to be partnered with Best of Essex. “We are so honored, blessed and grateful to have this partnership,” says Harris. “It’s a natural alliance because BOE also offers the ‘3 As,’ making this a powerful triple threat partnership!”
—Tamara Harris, Executive Director, CASA Essex

The Walter Scott Lenox Pavilion and The Vivienne and Stanley H. Katz Gallery features the Thomas N. Armstrong III Collection of Steuben Glass, recently donated to the Newark Museum. Gallery491, 73 Pine St., Montclair. 973-746-8737.
The artist was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and has, for more than 20 years, been rediscovering his passion for painting pictures in the suburbs of New Jersey. 5 OUTDOOR EXERCISES to Give Your Knees a Rest This Fall
Y
ou have waited all summer to get away from the heat and start running on your favorite route, track or trail, and autumn is finally here. With the cooler weather, though, comes a chance to mix up your fitness routine.
1
Hiking: There are many options locally. Check out South Mountain Reservation, Mills Reservation or Eagle Rock Reservation.
Running is one of the greatest exercises you can do—it is natural, inexpensive and incredibly effective for both losing weight and improving your cardiovascular fitness. It is safe too, provided you run using good form and change your running sneakers regularly.
2
Biking: Whether you’re more of a mountain biker or you prefer the road, you have choices.
3
Boating: Canoeing, kayaking, paddleboating– The choices are many.
The forces involved in running can aggravate knee pain, however. Osteoarthritis, runner’s knee, iliotibial band syndrome and patellar tendinitis are all common conditions that can affect your knees if you are putting in the miles.
4
Kettlebell swings: Kettlebells are portable and can be easily used in your yard or a park.
5
Yoga: You can do yoga anywhere with next to no gear needed.
Autumn lends itself to so many other outdoor activities. If your knees need a break or you are not a fan of running, consider these alternate forms of outdoor exercises that can be kinder to your knees.
If knee pain is getting in the way of your outdoor enjoyment, request an appointment at Summit Medical Group Orthopedics. With 52 specialists at 23 locations, you are sure to get the appointment you need at the time and place most convenient for you. 844-SMG-ORTHO (764-6784) www.smgortho.com

Chocolate Milk Can Aid in Replenishing Nutrients for Teen Athletes
B
etween sports practices, training, games and tournaments, teen athletes endure a lot of stress on their bodies. While some parents know real dairy milk is a nutritious option for growing kids, many don’t realize that chocolate milk has nutritional benefits, too – especially when it comes to exercise recovery. According to a first-of-its-kind study from the University of Texas at Austin, recovering with low-fat chocolate milk as part of a tough training routine could help teen athletes get stronger. The study included more than 100 high school athletes entering grades 9-12 who were enrolled in a five-week training program involving training four days a week. Some students recovered with chocolate milk and others recovered with a sports drink

with the same amount of carbohydrates but no protein. Researchers found that students who recovered with chocolate milk had greater strength gains compared to those who recovered with sports drinks. In fact, the chocolate milk group bench-pressed an average of 3.5% more at the end of the program than at the beginning, whereas teens who recovered with sports drinks actually decreased their bench-press weight by close to the same amount, around 3.2%. Additionally, those who recovered with chocolate milk improved in squat strength by nearly twice as much as those who consumed sports drinks for post-workout recovery, lifting an average of 15% more weight (compared to about 8% more weight) by the program’s end.

Top all that off with the taste kids love, and chocolate milk is an easy way for teens to get the nutrition they need to be their best, in athletics and beyond. Clara Maass Medical Center Unveils New Emergency Department Lobby
A
ribbon cutting ceremony was held this July to celebrate the grand opening of a new Emergency Department at Clara Maass Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility. The newly opened Emergency Department is a part of a larger renovation project at Clara Maass Medical Center that is underway and is slated to be complete by the end of the year. The new Emergency Department will be served by a single new walk-in/drop-off entrance. The existing main entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Department has been redesigned, allowing for two separate and distinct waiting areas, one for pediatric patients and the other for general population emergency patients. A results-waiting room and discharge lounge has also been completed within the newly designed space to allow for better patient control and operational flow. “We designed the new Emergency Department with our patients in mind because we want to ensure that they are calm and comfortable when they are with us,” said Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Clara Maass Medical Center. “With these improvements, the nationally-recognized care available at Clara Maass Medical Center is now augmented by several wonderful conveniences that includes charging stations at every seat for use by our visitors and patients.”

CEREC Dental Technology: A Crowning Achievement! By Cynthia Burns, Photography by Dan Epstein
A
t Advanced Smiles Dental Care, Dr. Tina Moheb DMD, has successfully incorporated CEREC dental technology into her Verona family practice. In a recent interview with Suburban Essex, Dr. Moheb explained how this technology works to enable her patients to get the best dental care with minimal disruption into their busy lives.
than traditional impressions. You no longer have to live for weeks with a temporary fix and try to cram yet another dental visit into your busy schedule to receive the fabricated restoration.
What is CEREC?
Convenience– What’s the value of your time? CEREC restorations can be designed, milled, and placed all in a single appointment.
CEREC is short term for CEramic REConstruction. CEREC uses computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to take digital impressions quickly and generate a precisely fitted restoration all in one single visit. Traditionally, these procedures require a minimum of two trips to the dentist with patients wearing a temporary in between the visits. Our digital impressions are much more comfortable and accurate
What are some of the advantages of same day crowns?
No temporary crowns– You don’t have to wait for the lab to create your restoration while wearing a temporary that is not a custom fit.
win! The CEREC system’s digital scanner allows us to measure and design your crown right in the system’s software. No need to take conventional impressions! Just as strong– CEREC restorations are milled from the same dental-grade porcelain used by dental labs. Their quality, strength, and durability are equal to those made in a dental lab. At Advanced Smiles, our team is committed to bringing you the best in dental health services. Whether you need a crown, a partial crown, an implant, veneer, or a simple filling we can use CEREC technology to get you in and out with a new great fitting restoration as quickly and comfortably as possible!
No dental impressions– Let’s face it... no one likes the goop and gagging that go with the usual dental impressions! We don’t like making you gag either. It’s a win-

How You SLEEP Affects Your HEALTH – and Could Give You Wrinkles
A
s you drift off to sleep, how does your nightly position affect your health? Whether you prefer stomach, back, side or curled into a fetal position, the way you snuggle into the pillow may affect your breathing patterns, neck and back pain, and circulation. A less-serious effect, but one most people would probably like to avoid, is an increase in facial wrinkles.

Sleeping Position Pros and Cons Here are some of the pros and cons of go-to nightly postures, according to the National Sleep Foundation. 1 ) Back: Lying on your back and assuming a neutral body position typically results in the least amount of strain on your head, neck and spine. But studies show links between back sleepers and snoring, so if this is something you are prone to, try flipping to your side. Also, sleeping on your back is not a good choice if you have sleep apnea, because your tongue can fall back, narrowing the airway. 2 ) Side: Side-sleeping, which is the most common position for adults, helps to open our airways to allow for steady airflow to the lungs. Researchers have found resting on the side may boost brain health, at least when monitoring the sleeping patterns of laboratory animals, but a separate study showed the potential for increased wrinkles in side-sleepers.

3 ) Fetal position: The fetal position helps improve circulation and is a good bet for people who tend to snore. Be sure not to curl too tightly as you drift off, however, as it may cause difficulty breathing. 4 ) Stomach: Sleeping on your stomach may make breathing regularly a challenge because airway passages could be compromised. Others may experience neck pain or tingling in joints and muscles due to poor circulation, which is a common challenge for people with diabetes. To help avoid putting pressure on the spine, tuck a pillow under your pelvis to keep a neutral lumbar position. One other negative: Enhanced wrinkles may be a side effect of stomach slumber. While changing your default sleeping position is no easy task, you can help the process by supporting your head and legs with pillows designed for your ideal position.

Barry Farber For this month’s Mind Your Business TV Special I featured the 10 Time World Champion Skateboarder, Andy Macdonald, who taught me how to ride the halfpipe and learn how to fall forward in life. He shared some valuable life lessons and I hope you enjoy watching it. You can see the show on the home page at www.barryfarber.com.
“As long as I can remember I’ve liked taking risks. From riding my big wheel off jumps as a kid to pushing my limits with speed and jumps downhill skiing as a teenager. Maybe that’s what attracted me to skateboarding and why I took to it with such fervor and commitment. Skateboarding taught me lots of lessons in self-discipline, self-motivation and creativity, but perhaps the best lesson learned was simply being comfortable with pushing things to the edge. Not just in skateboarding but in life in general. If you learn to push everything you do in life to the limits of what is possible, you tend to get comfortable at the edge and it ceases to be “scary or “risky. It just becomes part of who you are. How you roll. Next thing you know there are people asking how it is that you’ve been so successful in life. I just tell them skateboarding taught me.
This summer I went down to Atlantic City with my film crew to the 25th Anniversary of the VANS WARPED TOUR. It’s a combination of top bands, Motorcross and a BMX and Skateboarding exhibition.
