One District…One Team…One Vision
In the spring, students in grades 3-8 participate in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment. This assessment measures each student’s academic progress with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. The results from the PARCC assessments are a helpful tool in measuring each child’s success as well as the district’s program and curricular accomplishments and needs. Over the past two years, the Little Falls School District has seen
growth and advancement. In the area of Mathematics, 16% of the students moved into the top two performance levels (meeting and exceeding expectations) and 7% of students moved out of the lowest two performance levels (not meeting and partially meeting). In the area of English Language Arts, 10% of the students moved into the top two performance levels (meeting and exceeding expectations) and 5% of students moved out of the lowest two performance levels (not meeting and partially meeting).
The academic growth our district is experiencing is directly attributed to the collaboration of all stakeholders. Board of Education, administrators, teachers, support staff, volunteers, educational partners, and community members, without your countless hours of dedication and support, none of this would be possible. Thank you for helping us develop an environment of excellence and high achievement for all. “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.”

Outstanding Partner – Superintendent Little Falls Education Foundation Superintendent: Tracey Marinelli This award is given to a superintendent who has been an outstanding education foundation partner. Congratulations to the Little Falls Education Foundation and Superintendent Marinelli.
The students in Little Falls have been active STEAM learners. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. STEAM is different from the traditional science and math education courses in its hands on and blended learning approach. This allows students to explore how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. STEAM education teaches students computational thinking and focuses on the real world applications of problem solving. STEAM courses are a place for students to develop creative solutions to authentic challenges through the process of design thinking. In a STEAM Lab students are able to imagine, plan, build, and create. In our STEAM Labs, students can be seen using our Makey Makey invention kits (donated by the Little Falls Education Foundation), programing our Robot MEL, creating racecars, umbrellas, operation games, roller coasters, Lego machines (donated by the Little Falls Education Foundation), cardboard video games, the possibilities are endless. The addition of STEAM Lab spaces and materials, have allowed our students to be transformed into explorers, inventors, engineers, and architects.

As I’ve stated in the past, small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and with the support of Little Falls residents, our town will thrive. There is nothing better than seeing the “buzz” in our Town Center, day and night, with all of the new eateries and activities taking place.
If you suffer from back or neck pain, we have the right solution for you! Our wellness centers will not just make your back and neck feel better, but we’ll also make sure to prevent any ongoing pain in the future. Call us for more information. We offer the following: • Complimentary Consultation
• State-of-the-Art Chiropractic Care with No Popping, Cracking, Twisting • Deep Tissue Therapeutic Massage • Acupuncture & Nutrition • Medicare and most insurances accepted
All of this activity is making it viable for our Town Center to take strides towards increased beautification, which will shortly include new and accessible municipal parking lots for all to use while enjoying the Little Falls Town Center. I am proud of the progress that has taken place in Little Falls over the past 15 months, and I’m excited for what the future holds. Little Falls continues to be a great place to live and raise a family, and with all of your help, the progress we will continue to make together, we will make our town even better.

Passaic Valley UNICO Chapter Takes “Service Above Self” Motto to a Whole New Level By Jackie Sawyer, photo by Dan Epstein

n today’s difficult climate, it’s more important than ever to be kind—and that’s just what the members of the Passaic Valley UNICO Chapter have been doing since becoming a charter in 1972 to the 1922-founded “Largest Italian-American Service Organization in the USA.” With a motto of “Service Above Self,” the chapter, which comprises Little Falls, Woodland Park and Totowa, supports the community in many ways. Member Salvatore Benvenuti said he likes being a member and supporting UNICO’s mission of engaging in charitable works, supporting higher education, and performing patriotic deeds. In addition, Benvenuti, who was born in Italy, said he also has an affinity for the group’s other mission of preserving a positive Italian American image and culture.
guests will enjoy Heritage Day, see exhibits and learn about UNICO.
This past December, the local chapter performed its annual Basket of Cheer efforts by donating three packages of $500 worth of gift cards to three different families in need. “We helped make the holidays a little brighter for these families with children,” he said.
The group’s largest fundraiser, a Golf Outing, is slated for June. Through this event, they will raise money to offer five to six $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors, and offer the Brian Piccolo Award to one male and one female student athlete.
In April, the chapter will hold its annual Food Drive to benefit St. James, St. Agnes, Little Falls Methodist Church and Holy Angels. This spring, the chapter will hold its annual Membership Drive where

marks many milestones for Little Falls. It’s not only the 150th Anniversary of the Town’s incorporation, which happened through an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 2, 1868–it’s also the Little Falls Athletic Club’s 100th Anniversary and the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Town’s Historical Society. According to John J. Veteri, Jr., Esq., President of the Little Falls Historical Society, none of these milestones will go unnoticed. All three groups have events planned, some of which are still in the planning stage. The Town plans to hold commemorative events including a “Little Falls Day”; an open house showcasing historical archives and presentations on the history of Little Falls; and historic trolley tours of the Town.
According to Veteri, the trolley tours will commence in Singac, near the original location of Grandview Park, an amusement park that closed in the 1930s. The tour will then make stops at the historic Mill, which was once home to the Beattie Carpet Mill, the first carpet mill in the U.S., now home to luxury condominiums; the Morris Canal, which until 1925 was an important artery of trade and transportation between the Delaware and Hudson rivers; the former Brownstone Quarry; and various other historic sites and points of interest throughout town. “The historic trolley tours were such a hit in 2011 for the 300th Anniversary of our Founding, we are bringing them back for our 150th Anniversary,” said William Liess, Little Falls Councilman and Vice President of the Historical Society. Little Falls was home to some famous people including: Congressional Medal of Honor Winner Frank E. Sigler; artist Griff Teller; illusionist David Blaine as well as author and radio personality Frank DeCaro. Jackie Gleason performed stand up in the 1930’s at the town’s Colonial Inn, and Frank Sinatra also performed at the Colonial Inn.

The Little Falls Historical Society encourages the preservation of homes, buildings and artifacts that not only reflect the historic nature of the Township but are also a living link back to a time that should be shared with future generations” said Historical Society Trustee and Treasurer, Peggy Olivi. As part of the 150th anniversary celebration, the Historic Society will be honoring several homeowners with Restoration Awards recognizing the best recent renovations of historic homes throughout the Township. Historical Society Secretary and lifelong resident, Mary Ann Kilpatrick, encourages every resident to join the historic society and learn more about the fascinating history of the Township. Michael Russo, a lifelong resident of Little Falls and current Vice President of the Little Falls Board of Education says “I am proud to live in such a tight knit community, where so many families have been here for several generations.” Russo’s Grandmother, Elsie Curreri, was one of the original-founding members of the Little Falls Historical Society.

The town of Little Falls now houses Passaic Valley Regional High School; Montclair State University–the second largest university in New Jersey; a minor league baseball team—the New Jersey Jackals; the Yogi Berra Stadium and Museum; and lots of great shops, restaurants and cafes located in the business districts on Main Street and Route 23.

100 Years of Bringing the Community Together By Jessica Schiffenhaus
T
he Little Falls Athletic Club (LFAC) has seen multiple generations of athletes, parents and coaches over the years. For many, participating in the club is a family tradition. The club is a private, non-profit organization with programs available to Little Falls children from Pre-K to eighth grade. The club has programs for baseball, softball (Rec and Travel), basketball (Rec and Travel), soccer (Indoor Rec and Outdoor Rec), and in recent years, added programs such as track and field for kids, a running club for adults, and tennis for kids and adults. Additionally, they are working on developing girls’ lacrosse, and travel teams for baseball. The volunteer-run organization relies on parents and adults to assist with coaching. Coaches are required to be certified by the Rutgers Coaching Certification class. The organization also looks to local sponsors to help with funding. “The great thing is that a lot of the businesses in town and ones nearby wanted to support our programs. And it’s nice when people see the logos on the shirts, it’s a win-win for the community as our members frequent these businesses,” said Chris Vancheri, LFAC Vice President, soccer commissioner and coach. Among the many events and celebrations throughout the year, at the end of March, the LFAC is hosting its second-annual adult dodgeball tournament on March 24th. April 14th marks the opening day celebration for the baseball and softball teams, which includes

a parade, along with players, coaches, and sponsors lining up on the field to be acknowledged, and a ceremonial first pitch. “Mark Seber, the president, has done a great job of trying to take it to the next level and building up the program,” said Vancheri. “He listens to feedback from parents and kids. He’s done such a good job of looking for ways to get people involved.” In May, the LFAC hosts an annual eighth grade luncheon to thank any eighth grader that has ever participated in the program, and to honor the coaches who volunteered during that time frame that are also moving on from the program. The club also awards two $1,000 scholarships to Passaic Valley High School graduating seniors who participated in the LFAC. The award recipients are also honored at the luncheon. And, of course, planning is underway for the Centennial celebration. “Everyone is excited about the 100-year celebration. We have a committee pulling together a ton of ideas. Everyone wants to get involved,” said Vancheri. “Stay tuned.” For more information, registration links, volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, events and more visit LittleFallsAC.com.

Flex Physical Therapy Focuses on Community Outreach By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein
D
r. Raffaele Lagonigro wants to clear up a popular misconception regarding physical therapy. He explains, “You do not need a doctor’s prescription to start P.T.; you can just call and make an appointment. This saves valuable time: While you are waiting for that doctor’s appointment, your injury or other condition is likely getting worse.”
Dr. Raffaele Lagonigro
Dr. Lagonigro speaks from experience; he holds a doctorate in physical therapy and has been in practice for a decade. He opened Flex Physical Therapy in late 2013 with the aim of creating a more grass-roots practice. While he certainly welcomes patients who have been referred to him by their doctors, he also engages in a great deal of community outreach. For instance, he offers free monthly workshops at the Little Falls Library on topics such as balance maintenance and lower back pain: “We want people to understand why they are having their pain and how physical therapy can help.” Dr. Lagonigro and his team see patients for a wide range of issues: “We treat everyone from middle school athletes to 80- and even 90-year-olds with balance and mobility challenges.” Depending on the issue, treatment methods might include biofeedback, electric stimulation, soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization/manipulation, trigger point release or myofascial decompression (cupping). With Flex Physical Therapy, Dr. Lagonigro has established a modern practice with an old-fashioned neighborhood feel.

“Our holistic approach helps determine the causes of symptoms, such as fatigue, joint pain, and abdominal bloating,” says Dr. Lentine, who has been practicing for more than 20 years. “In this way, we can recommend diet and lifestyle suggestions and sometimes, medications on a temporary basis, to help slow down the progression of diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, and fibromyalgia, to name a few.” While women go through menopause, men go through andropause—the lowering of testosterone. “Balancing hormones can help prevent diseases such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes,” she noted. In addition to male and female hormones, she also checks the adrenals and thyroid hormones to help balance the body. Dr. Lentine also works with Saleha Farzaie, her physician assistant; they have been practicing together for over 10 years. Their nurse practitioner, Alane Nouh, has worked with Dr. Lentine and Saleha for over 10 years as their medical assistant and later, their nurse. This year, Dr. Lentine has partnered with Bernice Donato, a certified professional coach, to create a wellness program that addresses weight management, nutritional advice, and overall mindset, as the patient transitions into a healthier lifestyle. In addition, her practice offers LipoLight, the most advanced slimming and toning program that is the latest treatment for non-invasive body contouring. LipoLight, she explained, uses light technology that literally releases fat from problem areas such as the waist, hips, thighs, chin, and back.

Top-Notch Stylists and a Range of Services TRINITY SALON—A FRIENDLY, FULL-SERVICE SALON By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photos by Dan Epstein

hen walking into Trinity Salon, clients are immediately relaxed by the warm, friendly atmosphere of this bustling business.
“We’re like a big family here. We make our clients very comfortable—we make them feel like they’re home,” said Lu Selimi, the salon’s owner. In fact, the name of the salon, Trinity, is a nod to Lu and her two sisters: Lara Emini, the salon manager and hairdresser, and Lule Muaremi, the salon coordinator and hairdresser. Lu has owned the salon for seven years, and things have gone off without a hitch. “We all act like sisters. It can’t be better than that.”
If you’re looking for a one-stop shop for your beauty needs, look no further. Trinity has a modern, open layout, where stylists mingle with clients, while performing a bevy of services. The salon offers everything—haircuts, color, highlights, blowouts, updos, keratin treatments, extensions, as well as makeup services. They also perform services for special events. Brides-to-be should note that wedding hair and makeup services are offered at the salon (with off-premises options available as well). The expansive space even flows upstairs to accommodate manicure tables, face and body waxing, eyelash extensions, and an in-house esthetician. The esthetician offers a complete menu of services, such as skin analysis, facials, skin treatments and more. Clients are treated like family at Trinity, and word of mouth travels fast. “Most of our new clients come from customer referrals,” said Lu, noting that they offer clients 15 percent off referral discounts for them and the person they referred. As an added bonus for Little
Falls Magazine readers, Trinity Salon is offering a deal for new clients: 15 percent off of all skincare treatments, and 20 percent off any hair service. “We really appreciate our clients and what they’ve done for us,” said Lu. “We wouldn’t be here without them.”

e provide hope and new beginnings to patients,” says Dr. JoAnn Giesenhaus, owner of Core Wellness Center. “Most patients who come to us have taken every pill and tried every potion to alleviate back and neck pain.” Hope lies in a unique treatment approach offered by Dr. Giesenhaus. She listens to the needs and goals of patients to develop individualized protocols. She brings more than 20 years of experience to the practice and has carefully chosen modalities to help patients maintain their health, vitality and youth. With a staff of seven, the Core Wellness Center delivers the highest standards of chiropractic care. Dr. Giesenhaus incorporates technology that allows her to perform instrument adjustments that do not entail cracking, twisting or popping. Adjustments can be performed while a patient is in motion, rather than stationary on a chiropractic table. Core Wellness offers acupuncture, massage, hypnotherapy, yoga and nutrition consultations. One does not have to be a chiropractic patient to try the other services offered. Dr. Giesenhaus does not believe in turning patients away. The practice accepts most health insurance plans and devises payment plans when services are not covered. Core Wellness sponsors programs that are open to the community including: yoga, meditation, stretching classes and guest speakers. Dr. Giesenhaus also conducts certification classes for volunteer recreational sports coaches in Little Falls and surrounding areas. “Pain wears you down,” notes Dr. Giesenhaus. “Healing is a physical and emotional process. When you can give a patient relief and see the twinkle return to their eyes, it’s very rewarding.”

The Twists & Turns of Curly Hair Shag86: An Interview with Lily Vasquez By Christine S. Maxwell Photo by Dan Epstein
B
eautiful hair comes in all shapes and sizes. Lily Vasquez, a premier curly hair specialist at Shag86 in Little Falls, discusses getting and keeping those luscious curls. Why did you decide to specialize in curly hair? For a long time, I would straighten my hair every day. Once I started as a stylist at Shag86 the owner, Gerald Ferraro, convinced me to go curly. Little by little I started releasing my natural curls. Curly is who I am. I wanted to give others the confidence to wear their hair curly and also to teach clients how their curly hair behaves and how to keep it looking its best. What are some simple daily hair care recommendations to keep curly hair looking great? A curly hair maintenance program is simple. Use the right moisturizing shampoo, followed by a good conditioner. Add a finishing product such as a gel or mousse. Let hair air dry or use a diffuser to dry hair. Wash your hair when it is needed. Your hair will tell you by its look, smell, or feel. That may be everyday or once a week. What are some of the summer trends for curly hair? Popular this summer will be shoulder-length blunt cuts with lots of layers to let curls loose. For color, it’s caramels to blondes using a Pintura technique. The Pintura technique provides highlights by following a curl pattern on strands.
Lily Vasquez What is one interesting fact that readers should know about curly hair?
Do you have any final advice for curly heads?
Never have your curly cut with hair wet! The stylist should cut it dry and then wash it. Curls relax when hair is wet, and hair appears longer. If hair is cut wet, you may have much shorter hair than you want when it is dry.
About 75 percent of the population has curly hair, so give curly hair a try. Build your confidence by wearing hair curly gradually. It’s a process going curly, and you may find that you love your curly locks!

An Era of Change; A Plan for Student Success T
he 2015-16 school year marked an era of change for the students in Little Falls Township. Two new Superintendents were appointed to lead both Little Falls Township Public Schools and Passaic Valley Regional High School District 1, which also serves the students of Totowa and Woodland Park. An analysis of academic programs ensued immediately and both Superintendents Tracey Marinelli (Little Falls) and Dr. JoAnn Cardillo (PVHS) determined that specific goals leading to a strong partnership and collaborative relationship was necessary to best serve the students and staff of Little Falls Pre-K–12. Since then, numerous enhancements have been made to programming, professional development, and regional alliance.
What programs have been added to Little Falls School No1 in order to enhance career and college readiness 6-8?

LF: A plethora of electives including STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, mathematics), Journalism, Public Speaking, Personal Financial Literacy, and Mindfulness. How has PVHS increased opportunities for sending students to become familiar with their community high school? PVHS: PV Open House for fall visitation, PVHS staff and student visits to middle school regarding the high school experience, parent forums, and multiple school visits from The Student Activity Coordinator and Athletic Director. How have the Regional Superintendents enhanced teacher and administrator collaboration among the four districts of Little Falls, Totowa, Woodland Park, and Passaic Valley Regional? BOTH: Superintendents Cardillo, Marinelli, Capitelli (Totowa), and Pillari (Woodland Park) meet monthly. These meetings have resulted in professional development opportunities for teachers, which include a regional (Pre-K – 12) professional development held in the fall and articulation of content area staff 6-12. Our newest venture, planned for June 2018, will be a Summer Ed. Camp for all four district administrative teams. What 21st Century tools are Superintendents Marinelli and Cardillo using to communicate with families, community members, and stakeholders?

Veterinarian Produces Natural Raw Food for Dogs By Deborah Schapiro
T
en years ago, local veterinarian Dr. Gerald Buchoff began making raw food for his feline and canine clients. Buchoff was tired of seeing dogs and cats who were suffering from allergies and autoimmune diseases, believing that these problems were due largely to their diet. The results were so impressive that in 2016 he created Dr. B’s Longevity Raw Pet Food, a line of raw food for dogs at all stages of life (a raw cat food line is in development). The ingredient list for Dr. B’s Longevity Raw Pet Food includes grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, and almost a dozen different fruits and vegetables. One thing that does not appear is kibble, which Buchoff calls “junk food for pets.” The product line is available online; at independent pet retailers across New Jersey, New York City and Eastern Pennsylvania; and at Buchoff’s veterinary practice, Holistic Pet Care.

Home Sweet Apartment Value Companies Offers its Residents an Enjoyable Rental Experience By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein Jack Linefsky & Ellen Sossin
A
ccording to Jack Linefsky, “More and more people are renting by choice, for both economic and convenience reasons.” Linefsky should know; he is the vice president of property management at the award-winning property management firm Value Companies. Value Companies, established in 1952, manages 3,226 apartment homes in 15 rental communities throughout New Jersey and New York. The Clifton-based firm manages some of these, such as The Bromley at 44 Main in Little Falls. Others, such as Gateways at Randolph, are both owned and managed by Value Companies. Residents enjoy amenities such as a dog walk, barbecue areas, and
club rooms. Depending on the location, a Value Companies property may include an outdoor pool, rooftop patio or fitness room. Linefsky adds, “We are installing high-speed internet, LED lighting and stone countertops to bring the interiors of our apartments up to current standards of what residents expect.” In addition to amenities, Value Companies apartments also provide first-class maintenance. Linefsky notes, “We have a great maintenance team. Each one of our complexes has a maintenance manager, and our larger properties have quite a few. The managers generally live on the property so that they can be available 24/7 to deal with any issues that arise.” Spring 2018
Also available 24/7 is the residents’ online portal. According to Linefsky, “This has made it easier for our residents to communicate with us–whether to pay rent, initiate a maintenance request, or for any other reason.” He adds, “Unlike most other property management firms, Value Companies is a family-owned business. We have a vested interest in providing every one of our clients with a clean, well-maintained, enjoyable experience. We want our residents to feel comfortable in their homes.”

What is Reflexology? A Tranquil Journey Shares Insight Photo by Dan Epstein
W
hat is Reflexology? Foot Reflexology is a science, which works with the principle that there are reflexes in your feet and hands relating to each organ and in fact all parts of your body.
As we get older, inorganic calcium builds up on our nerve endings and causes a shortage of nerve energy back to the corresponding parts of your body. By skillfully stimulating these reflexes, the calcium deposits can be gradually dissolved, which enables renewed nerve energy and blood circulation to previous sluggish glands, organs, and other parts of the body. The clearing starts after your very first treatment. You experience a sense of wellbeing, and feel energized and relaxed. Reflexology can also initiate feelings of renewed vigor, and relief from tension, insomnia, nervousness, anxiety; and pains such as arthritis, sciatica, migraines, stiff neck, bursitis, pains and cramps in feet and hands, and more. Reflexology has been practiced for thousand of years, as a key to improving health. People throughout the world have repeatedly reported remarkable successes from almost all of their body’s disorder. Reflexology is now in vogue, and has been “discovered” by doctors, prominent people and the media.

Decades of Experience Coupled with Cutting-Edge Technology Century 21–Van Der Wende Associates Has Your Real Estate Needs Covered By Jessica Schiffenhaus Photo by Dan Epstein
F
amily-owned and operated, Century 21 Van Der Wende Associates has been serving Little Falls and surrounding area for over 35 years. The multi-generational business’s long-standing success in the market is a testament to the quality of service it provides. For Rob Van Der Wende, sales associate and co-owner, real estate isn’t just a career, it’s a way of life. “I grew up in the business, so I learned the right way to do things through my parents. But, as a millennial, I also grew up understanding the importance of technology, which is how most of the business is transacted today,” said Van Der Wende. “If a real estate agent is behind on technology, it’s a real disservice to their clients. So we are always up to date on the latest technologies and social media.” Van Der Wende utilizes social media not only as a digital marketing strategy, but to engage clients and let them have some fun with the buying and selling process, which can be a stressful time for homeowners. “Our job is to take the stress and anxiety out of the process for our customers as much as possible, and to make their life as simple as we can throughout their real estate transaction.” Van Der Wende Associates is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including the Century 21 President’s Award, as well as the Century 21 President’s Hall of Fame Award—an award bestowed upon only a few offices in the country. The company has also hit a number of milestones over the years. According to Van Der Wende, the company has been the number one office in the Passaic Valley for 27 years; many of the company’s agents, including Van Der Wende, have earned Century 21 awards and New Jersey Realtors awards and are at the top of their markets. “Our agents are some of the most successful agents in NJ,” he states.
Robert Van Der Wende “We’re really happy that we are a part of Century 21, which is the most highly recognized name in real estate,” said Van Der Wende. “And as a family-owned and operated company, we’re always there for our agents and our customers, 24/7.” Spring 2018

Carpets, Floors and More Ken Dietz & Company Cleans Them All By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein
K
en Dietz began his career in the hotel industry. Among the many services required, he noted that carpet cleaning was inadequate. That was 46 years ago. Dietz, who admits, “I like things clean,” established a fullservice residential and commercial carpet and upholstery cleaning business. Dietz also cleans tile and grout, wood and garage floors, and disinfects and deodorizes mattresses. “All of the chemicals we use are green,” Dietz states. “They are non-toxic and non-irritating to humans and pets.” Dietz explains it is important to have upholstery cleaned to remove bacteria, dander, oil and grease that emanate from humans and pets and finds their way into sofas and chairs. In his spare time Dietz restores antique cars. “I apply the same degree of detail and care to my clients as I do the cars.” The owner offers a 10-day guarantee to residential customers; if there’s a new spill or customers are not satisfied, he will re-clean it, at no charge.

s head of the sales team at Fairfield Farms, Joyce Francavilla prides herself on hiring people that are friendly and helpful to the customers. Top spring items include hanging baskets, container gardens and geraniums that are reasonably priced. “Bring us your pots and we’ll also do the replanting,” says Francavilla. The curbside summer produce market has become a considerable business, offering Jersey fresh corn, tomatoes, peaches, blueberries, and other fresh produce. The Fall Family Festival kicks off the third weekend in September during the farm’s busiest season for birthday parties and school field trips. In a small, organized and safe environment, children enjoy fun activities like pumpkin picking, hayrides and the popular Spider Web Maze. “Visit Fairfield Farms for beautiful flowers in the spring, great Jersey fresh produce in the summer and plenty of fall family fun in October,” Francavilla states.

roy Orthodontics, located in Little Falls, offers state-of-theart orthodontic treatment for all ages. “It’s never too late to have orthodontic treatment,” said Tuhina Roy, DDS, who has practiced orthodontics for 9 years. “It offers many health benefits for everyone, such as palate expanders in younger patients to improve their breathing and correct bite problems early, and treatment in conjunction with oral surgery for adults and teenagers with severe sleep apnea.”
• Personal attention only family can provide • Serving all faiths • Spacious parking • Complimentary pre-planning consultation • Complimentary grief counseling on premises
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7, according to Dr. Roy. “This does not mean a child will need treatment at age 7,” she said. “It allows us to meet with families and familiarize them with the office, while informing about potential problems down the road. Most patients start full braces treatment between the ages of 10 and 14, but this can vary.” Orthodontics, she added, has changed for the better over the years. “We offer both metal and clear braces, plus clear aligner treatment—known as Invisalign—which moves teeth with clear custom-made trays and no braces,” she said, adding that today’s braces are smaller and the wires are more advanced, allowing for more movement, meaning fewer office visits. Troy Orthodontics is a digital, paperless office, which makes it easier for Dr. Roy to communicate with parents and referring offices, and allows her to study treatment progress from home, she said. She also understands that orthodontic treatment is an important investment and will work with each family to customize a payment plan, according to their budget.

or more than 35 years, podiatrist Alan G. Shier has been providing the best foot care to patients in northern New Jersey. He is fully aware that painful feet, or feet that are not mechanically sound, can cause secondary pain elsewhere in the body, such as the knees, hips, and lower back. “Having problem feet can impact daily living in a big way,” states Dr. Shier. “It can affect how a person feels when they walk, sit or sleep. It is agonizing for many people.” Dr. Shier’s Foot Care & Surgery Center focuses on diagnosing foot pain and treating everything from ingrown toenails to debilitating sports-related injuries to complex foot deformities, as well as providing routine foot care for patients with diabetes. “I offer my patients sound practical advice while employing the latest surgical techniques and technology to help keep their feet healthy and happy,” he said. Dr. Shier accepts patients of all ages and all elective surgery is performed on an out-patient basis.

or almost 100 years the Bizub family has provided guidance and care to help families in the planning of a funeral or memorial. Third generation funeral director Toby Bizub, manager of the Bizub-Parker Funeral Home, says, “Our goal is to provide a fitting memorial to a life well lived.” The experienced and caring directors at Bizub-Parker are trained to handle all ethnic and religious services and will always assist with special requests. Sage advice and emotional support are offered throughout and after the funeral. Directors go above and beyond for each family. “We don’t just handle funeral arrangements, we also arrange luncheons and cemetery memorials,” states Bizub. “The amount of time we spend guiding families after the funeral is immeasurable.” Manager Bizub and the entire team strive to build long-term relationships with families. “Our function is to educate and provide services,” he notes. Many different Burial and Cremation Packages are available to meet every budget. He recommends pre-arranging services to reduce the stress and to relieve any financial concerns.

Going Beyond the Limits
F
amed race car driver Mario Andretti once said, “If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.” Barry Farber Obviously, he was not advocating going so fast that you spin out and crash; he was talking about pushing the limits, going beyond what is safe and taking a calculated risk. In life and in business, the only way to test your limits is by opening the throttle and going forward, past the point you think you can achieve.

Jim McCann, founder of 1-800-FLOWERS in Westbury, New York, is constantly looking for those opportunities. “I ask myself, ‘When I look back five years from now, where will the really big opportunities have come from? What are the things I’m going to look at and wish I had done?’ That forces you to take your best guess, with the evidence in front of you, as to how the business world is going to change – and make sure you’re positioning your company to be at the edge of that change.” You do not have to be extraordinary to accomplish extraordinary things, but you do have to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your vision, even if it is extreme. Entrepreneur and world champion skateboarder Tony Hawk pushes the limits in both sports and business. “No matter how far you go with skating, you’ve got to keep challenging yourself. Even if you’re considered to be the top in your field, there are ways you can improve yourself and keep coming up with new challenges. The goal is not to be better than everyone else; the goal is to be better than yourself.” When you are older and looking back on your life, you will not be telling stories about the times when everything came easily. You will be talking about the things that were most challenging, and therefore most exciting. Every day you should ask yourself: What new information have I learned today? When you are pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, you are almost always guaranteed to learn something new that can be used in a positive way to move forward, but you have to look for it. Robert Louis Stevenson said, “To be what we are, to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life.” Do you know right now what you are capable of becoming? How can you ever know, unless you are willing to put yourself to the test? The only way to become everything you are capable of becoming is by pushing the limits every single day. he next time you are looking for something fun and educational to do with your family, a trip to the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center may just be what the doctor ordered. Nestled on the Montclair University campus, with its adjoining Yogi Berra Stadium that’s home to the Jackals, the museum shares the values that made Berra a national treasure—respect, perseverance, sportsmanship, and excellence—with visitors through sports-based exhibitions and programs. The museum stays open late on game days, so ticket holders can take in the rotating and permanent collections that include memorabilia documenting Berra’s life; The Mitt Mobile, an interactive collection of vintage catcher’s mitts; 76 portraits of the great New York players of Yogi’s era; and an exhibit dedicated to Berra’s World War II military service. The interactive learning center is committed to serving all communities from all backgrounds, providing field trips to 5th to 12th graders that focus on STEM, Language Arts and Character Education. Summer offerings include baseball and softball camps, and a sports broadcasting camp. The facility will soon boast a digital, interactive pitching station. “Between Yogi’s great legacy and sports as the vehicle, there’s no limit to the fun and learning that can happen here,” said Eve Schaenen, Executive Director of the facility. The center is open from Noon to 5 pm, Wednesday through Sunday, with an admission fee of $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for children under 18 and no charge for Veterans. Membership packages are also available.

Is Your Life in Balance? DAILY HEALTHY HABITS TO CONSIDER
E
very so often, it’s important to take stock of your routine and make improvements where necessary.
Find Time to Decompress • If you’re a morning person, get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal to wake up with your favorite coffee or tea and think about what you need to accomplish for the day. • More of a night owl? Spend at least 30 minutes before going to sleep to unplug from technology and relax with a new book you’ve had on your list to read. • Schedule time for exercise to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Planning workouts ahead of time will make you more likely to stick to them.
Write Everything Down • Handwritten notes and to-do lists will reinforce your memory of the tasks you need to conquer. They also give you the option to look at what you need to do for the day and prioritize the list. Consider a personal planner. • Documenting your day not only keeps you organized, but also provides you with an opportunity to look back and reflect on your life’s accomplishments, memories and milestones from the year.
Balanced Diet, Balanced Life • Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will help you feel great, and can increase your focus, energy levels and productivity. • Plan out your meals ahead of time before going shopping by marking them in a calendar. This will give you more time during the week to cook and prepare meals, without having to make frequent trips to the store or feel tempted to grab take-out. You’ll be more likely to stick with the habit if you love the calendar you use. • Cooking your own fresh meals can help keep your bank account balanced, and is often much healthier than food from a restaurant. And spending time in the kitchen is also a stress reliever for some people. Make a fresh start—today is the perfect day to make positive changes to how you schedule and organize your time.

party is always going on at 2 Sweet, the boutique bakery/custom cake shop on Main Street in Little Falls. Owner Angela Shafer started her business 11 years ago after the birth of her twin daughters (thus “2 Sweet”), but moved to the current location in October. 2 Sweet offers a daily sweets menu, custom cake creation, decorating classes for kids 11 and up and adults, and a dash of event planning. The girls at 2 Sweet tailor each event to fit their client’s needs by offering in-shop consultations. They specialize in custom cakes and cupcakes, but also offer favors, centerpieces, dessert tables and so much more. Everything is made to order and made in house. Word of their expertise has spread as far as Broadway, where 2 Sweet made a custom cake for the closing night of “Rock of Ages,” cupcakes for “Something Rotten,” and cake pops for “Mean Girls.”

Inside Dish By Dan Epstein
Everyone who knows Rare The Steakhouse in Little Falls knows that it is one of the premier establishments in New Jersey to order up one of the region’s best plates of grilled red meat. According to chef Dino Suriano, the most popular of those are the 10-ounce Fillet and the well-known 26-ounce Cowboy Rib Steak. And, while the average Essex County diner might not think of this legendary steak house as a place to order seafood, it is. In fact, Suriano says, “most diners begin their meal with a seafood appetizer before chowing down on one of the renowned steaks.” Oysters, clams, and crabcakes have been for some time the most popular first courses. With this in mind, Chef Suriano has created this seasonal seafood appetizer for Spring: Charred Octopus. The appetizer is served on a bed of Arugula, Fennel and Blood Oranges, and then perfectly dressed with a Citrus Vinaigrette. According to Suriano, “It’s light, it’s healthy, it’s good for you.” We have to agree.

Maggie’s Town Tavern Welcomes Spring By Rhonda L. Rivera, photo by Daniel Epstein

hen warmer weather hits, the place to be is the patio of Maggie’s Town Tavern, where guests dine al fresco with friends and family. If the weather is uncooperative, three dining rooms offer Maggie’s delicious cooked-to-order meals, at reasonable prices. The bar-lounge area is also a perfect meeting place to enjoy a game. Taken over by the Georgakopoulos family in 2008, this Little Falls mainstay focuses on community. “From staff to customers, we truly are a family,” states owner Maggie Georgakopoulos. “Waiters may even tip off customers about specials,” she quips, citing an unofficial email chain alerting when in-demand entrees like chicken pot pie and slow cooked ribs are on the menu. Maggie’s Town Tavern is located at 10 Van Ness Avenue in Little Falls; 973-256-7708, www.maggiestowntavern.com. Open Monday, 11 am–12 am; Tuesday-Saturday 11 am-2 am; Sunday, 12:30 pm-12 am. 28 Flavors of Delicious Ice Cream & More! By Tonya Johnson, photo by Dan Epstein
T
om Barone was feeling a bit nostalgic when he opened Falls Creamery in June of 2015. Since then, the local ice cream parlor in Little Falls has become the talk of the town and continues to get rave reviews. He researched to find the best quality ice cream for his customers. After very careful consideration he decided to use Gifford’s famous ice cream in Skowhegan, Maine, made with the freshest milk and cream from local farmers, using antique machines to slow churn each batch. The first season was packed with local residents, but every year more and more people from all over New Jersey come to Falls Creamery saying it’s the best ice cream around. With 28 flavors of the highest quality ice cream, more than two thirds are gluten free. Customers go crazy for Campfire S’mores, Chocolate Chip Mint, Toasted Coconut, Peanut Butter Pie and Maine Blueberry on a regular basis. Cranberry Choco Chip Nut, Sea Salt Caramel Truffle, Lemon Wafer Cookie low-fat frozen yogurt, No Fat/No Sugar Added Chocolate and Blueberry Pomegranate sorbet will be added to the menu this Spring. “Customers are getting the highest quality, all natural ice cream in all their favorite flavors with many, many toppings available. We also have great fresh waffles, creative sundaes, milkshakes, floats,

coffee, cappuccino and hot chocolate and usually some type of homemade treat, like brownies! They can always expect friendly service in a clean, fun environment,” said Janine Veteri Barone, who runs and manages the daily operations at Falls Creamery. For the first time since its inception, Falls Creamery stayed open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays this winter and was very happy to see so many customers come out in the cold weather to get their favorite ice cream. Falls Creamery will go back to being open 7 days/week in April.

Fresh Fruit Flavors When it comes to fresh fruit, watermelon is a top pick in many households.
I
t’s available year-round and makes for a nutritious snack, but its great taste is the reason most people buy watermelon, according to research from the National Watermelon Promotion Board.

Not only is watermelon a tasty snack by itself, it’s a great complement to other flavors, making it easy to create flavorful pairings. This sweet take on pizza combines watermelon with a host of other good-for-you ingredients for a delicious treat. Healthy enough for breakfast and sweet enough for dessert, this pizza can make its way into your weekly meal rotation. For another nutritious option, consider this Buddha bowl featuring watermelon, which contains higher levels of lycopene, an antioxidant, than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. Watermelon is also an excellent source of vitamin C, and it provides vitamin B6 and potassium. It’s the perfect sweet addition to balance the savory flavors of this traditional plant-based Buddha bowl. Each of these recipes leaves plenty of room for personalization; experiment with your favorite flavors to make each dish your own. Also remember that watermelon travels well, so these recipes make for ideal take-along snacks when you’re on the go. Find more fresh, fruity recipes to enjoy any time of year at watermelon.org. Frozen Alternatives
F
or fans of ice cream, ice pops and other frozen treats, frozen fresh fruit can be a delicious and healthy alternative. Love banana spits? A frozen banana is a great stand-in—after peeling, store in a plastic bag or wrapped in plastic wrap. Have a penchant for snacking? Leave a bowl of grapes in the freezer for a quick bite. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and clementines, are also refreshing when frozen—a perfect substitute for the classic orange Popsicle. Even lemons can be frozen and used for flavoring cold drinks.

veryone knows that vegetables are good for weight management, yet eating enough of them every day can be difficult. Boiling and roasting them becomes mundane. Now, carrots, turnips, beetroots, cucumbers and zucchinis are being “spiralized” into pasta-like forms using julienne peelers and spiralizing machines, so sneaking them into a daily diet has never been easier. The idea behind spiralizing is to chop a vegetable as little as possible in order to keep its nutritional value intact. Spiralized vegetables have a similar texture and consistency as regular pasta and noodles. Using this method, tastebuds think they are indulging in the carb-laden original, while the waistline shows differently.
