elcome to Little Falls! There are many new and exciting things happening around town, from new businesses in our once vacant store fronts, to our summer concert series in the park. Little Falls continues to be a great place to raise a family.
With the summer upon us, I insist that you come and visit our Town Center and enjoy a bite to eat, a cup of coffee, or a quick meal at the diner—you won’t be disappointed. On Thursday nights during the summer, join us in the park for the ABC Summer Concert Series, where you can enjoy a night out with a concert, and visit numerous local vendors who will be in attendance. Little Falls has so many great upcoming activities and events, and I encourage you to get involved, and join us at all of the events. Seeing the ever growing “buzz” in our Town Center, I am proud of the progress that has taken place, and I’m excited for what the future holds. I remain delighted to call Little Falls my home, and I hope you feel the same way! —James Belford Damiano Mayor, Township of Little Falls

alking down Main Street, you would not suspect that a preserved woodland and forested floodplain is located behind the stores. The Little Falls Morris Canal Preserve was redeveloped by the Little Falls ABC, through the Passaic County Open Space Grant, as part of the organization’s goal to revitalize, redevelop, and beautify the town. The paths start at a beautiful recreation area with a gazebo, children’s activities and a Little Free Library. The upper path was improved by the installation of new fencing and a macadam path as well as checkerboard tables and benches. The path features basalt rocks and beautiful views along the water outflow at the Passaic County Water Commission’s building. On a walk down the lower path visitors cross over a walking bridge, pass the site of the Fallshenge Brownstown classroom and continue on to the beautiful views of the Passaic River, where locals are known to go fishing.

Arts & Creations Pottery Studio Offers a Palette of Choices By Cynthia Burns, photos by Dan Epstein

“
reate your own masterpieces,” encourage Gina and Frank Avagnano, owners of Arts & Creations Pottery Studio. At the studio, a palette of choices is offered for children and adults. Those who choose to paint pottery can select from more than 800 preformed items ranging in price from $15 to $95 dollars. Or grab a brush and take a canvas painting class. For those who enjoy mosaics, Arts & Creations has an exciting selection of surfaces to choose, with a guarantee of never creating the same design twice. There is also glass painting and working with clay. “People create pieces for themselves or to give as gifts,” says Gina. The Avagnanos opened the business two years ago after pondering a career change. “We bought the building, renovated it and opened,” says Gina. Success is measured in kilns. “We started with one and now we have three.” They could have established any number of businesses, but the focus was and remains on fun. “This is peaceful and somewhat therapeutic for everyone,” says Gina.
Gina and Frank Avagnano Walk-ins are always welcome. The studio has evolved into a unique place to hold a party. Arts & Creations routinely books scout groups, ladies’ nights, sip and paint parties, children’s birthday parties, fund raising events and bridal parties. The party atmosphere is enhanced by a BYOB policy for adults. The owner notes that off-site events may be arranged. Arts & Creations also hosts team building enrichment events. “We have corporate clients who come in and paint pottery,” notes Gina. “The atmosphere is relaxed and stress free. Employees let their guard down and relate to one another in a non-office setting.” “This year, we will offer a 10-week summer camp for children five and older.” The flexible schedule—attend one week or more, one day or five—features weekly themes. Arts & Creations charges a $5 sitting fee, not an hourly rate, to give artists a chance to relax and gain a fantastic handson experience. The studio is open seven days a week. No appointment is necessary for individuals. Walk right in and create!

Spotlight on N Summer Color!
icole Kraft loves everything hair. As a top stylist with nine years of experience at Shag86 in Little Falls, she creates lovely locks with a palate of vibrant and natural colors. Nicole discusses the latest hair colors for the summer below. What are the most popular hair color choices for the summer?
By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein
Hair colors range from bold to subtle. There are lots of earthy tones, using palm painting or balayage to color strands of hair. Very natural looking and organic hair color is the current hair trend. Hair color that mimics the sun is the way to go. I prefer to celebrate clients’ hair colors by keeping the shades as natural as possible. A few highlights may be all that is needed for that new summer look. How can clients keep their color vibrant despite the ravages of the summer sun, heat, and humidity? Clients should use a good color-preserving shampoo and conditioner. They should also use a leave-in conditioner with sunscreen. Minimize washing hair as much as possible. Hair oils protect color. If hair is damaged by the elements, glazing restores the luster and softness of hair. Keratin treatments reduce frizzy locks, as well. How can color treated hair be protected in summer waters: lakes, ocean and chlorinated pools? Wearing a hat, scarf, or towel wrapped around the head when in the sun protects hair color. If hair is exposed to summer waters, use a leave- in conditioner or a regular conditioner before entering the water. In a pinch, apply bottled water to hair. The clean water will provide some protection from harsh summer waters. Lastly, shampoo and condition hair immediately after enjoying time at the beach or in the pool. Do you have any final advice for clients to keep color treated hair luscious and luxurious? I recommend a deep conditioning treatment for hair weekly. Clients should consider a glazing treatment every three to four weeks to keep hair shiny. Lastly, outer treatments are complemented with how we treat our bodies. Eating a well-balanced diet and staying hydrated year-round support the efforts we make to maintain beautiful hair.

Summer Home Updates to Enhance Your Space
I
s your house in need of a seasonal overhaul? Get your home in shape with these easy tasks and upgrades, and enjoy the warmer months.
Top-to-bottom cleaning: In each room, start at the top and work your way to the bottom. Crumbs will inevitably fall from kitchen counters and dust will fly from fixtures, so clean your floors last so you don’t have to redo them later. In the kitchen, circle around the sink, starting at the right side of your stove and then move clockwise around the room. Stoves can be the dirtiest part of the kitchen, so ending there prevents the spread of grease and dirt. Creative upgrades: After the garage, the kitchen is tied with the home office as the second most cluttered room in the house, according to a Moen survey. Get rid of clutter by updating features with those that create a “home” for items that live out in the open. For example, when selecting a faucet, choose one with style and function, such as one that has a transitional low-profile design, ideal for installation in front of windows or on a kitchen island, and features Reflex technology, which allows for easy, secure docking of the spray wand.
A new kitchen sink, when chosen carefully, is another update that can reduce the appearance of clutter. Look for a model with a low-profile center divider that provides the versatility of a double bowl with single-bowl functionality. For instance, those from Moen allow you to fit items like pots and cookie sheets across two bowls easily, limiting the visibility of dirty dishes in the sink—which is ideal for open concept layouts. Color Your World: A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for a room. And lighter hues are both in style and perfect for summer. A few projects around the home can get you set for sunny seasons ahead. Helping Patients Reach
OPTIMAL WELLNESS Dr. Nancy Lentine & Bernice Donato
Bernice Donato By Deborah Schapiro, photos by Dan Epstein
D
r. Nancy Lentine, practicing for over 20 years, is a wellrespected integrative and functional medicine physician, known for getting to the “why” of her patient’s symptoms. Concerned with her patients’ overall well being, she recently opened the Wellness Center in collaboration with life coach Bernice Donato. Dr. Lentine explains the Wellness Center, located directly upstairs from her traditional practice, “is for our patients who are seeking to improve their overall health.” The center offers a wide range of services including spider vein removal to anti-aging therapies; the most popular service is Lipo-Light Body Contouring and a weight loss program. According to Ms. Donato, “Lipo-Light is one of the key tools we use in our comprehensive weight-loss program.” It is a non-invasive method of body sculpting where heat and light-emitting pads are placed around the patient’s problem areas. The result is the shrinkage of millions of fat cells, which translates into inches taken off the patient’s problem area. Dr. Lentine asked Ms. Donato, the owner of Mosaic Life Coaching, to join the Wellness Center in an effort to help patients navigate real, sustainable change that gets to the root of the problem by examining a person’s lifestyle. Ms. Donato adds, “Overall wellness is not just about your physical state. In fact, your physical state is
in direct proportion to your mental state.” In addition to supporting patients through the program, Bernice helps to examine things like relationships, work, parenting and anything that might be causing stress to see where things are out of alignment. From there, she collaborates with them to create a plan to attain more balance and reduce those stressors. Dr. Lentine structures each patient’s program individually, taking into consideration any medical conditions that may be hindering progress. Adds Dr. Lentine, “Having patients work with a coach has been very successful. I can address any medical issues while Bernice addresses the mindset behind the actions taken to create optimal wellness–a critical piece that is often missing from most other programs.” The ultimate goal of the Wellness Center, they agree, is for patients to learn how to take control of their own health.

Little Falls Laundry & Dry Cleaning is Friendly and Fast By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein
T
he facility is immaculate and modern, staff members are friendly and helpful, and customers can drop laundry off in the morning and pick it up that afternoon. That combination of attention to detail and old-fashioned customer service is what sets Little Falls Laundry & Dry Cleaning apart, says owner Don DeRosa. “We’re open seven days a week, from 7am to 10pm,” says DeRosa, chuckling that if someone taps on the door earlier, he’s often around to let them in. His staff, he emphasizes, is efficient and able to accommodate most requests, such as paying special attention to stains. The business offers pick up and delivery, with pick-ups on Tuesdays and Thursdays and deliveries on Wednesdays and Fridays. One unique service developed from customer request: The laundry will clean camping clothes and sleeping bags, then pack them in dryer sheets to be ready for next year’s camping.

ackie’s Grillette, which began whetting pallets in Montclair 11 years ago, has been doing the same in Little Falls for over three years. And, it’s been doing so–to much fanfare and accolades. The American Mediterranean fusion spot not only serves up coveted family recipes steeped in heritage, like gyros, kebobs, and falafel, it also delights patrons with a host of healthy, high-quality, homemade salads, wraps, burgers, cheesesteaks, reubens, soups and more. To round out its gastronomical menu, Jackie’s provides a wide selection of all-natural, healthy, fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies and protein shakes and boasts an extensive espresso bar. With two generations of the Arsheed family running the business, the family is no stranger to the restaurant industry or
to Little Falls. The family, which has been in the business for over 40 years, grew up in Little Falls, with siblings Jackie, Wassem and Labeeb graduating from the local high school. And keeping with the family restaurant tradition, Jackie recently opened up a brunch spot in South Orange on South Orange Ave. called Jackie and Son. “After running a sought-out restaurant in Montclair for over a decade, we decided it was time to open a second restaurant in the hometown we were raised in,” said Wassem, adding, “We wanted to share the delicious meals we grew up eating with the community we loved.” According to Wassem, while Jackie’s has a strong dedicated following, it is always exciting when new patrons stumble in and are blown away by the vast offerings, delicious menu items and specialty drinks. Summer 2018
“Once they find us, they keep coming back for more,” he said, with a laugh. “We haven’t done much advertising,” said Wassem. “Rather, we have been developing a following organically, and it’s been a fun ride so far.” Located on Main Street in Little Falls, Jackie’s Grillette joins restaurant staples A Taco Affair, Aquila Pizza al Forno and Casa Arturo, and veteran businesses Pencilworks Studio and Falls Creamery, adding to the eclectic vibe germinating there during the town’s current downtown revitalization period.

T
oday, selecting a bank that offers you a full array of products and services as well as the personal service many people are looking for can be a challenge. Often, consumers are faced with a choice between the personal service at a smaller bank and the convenience and technology of a larger one. Two individuals working to make the selection easy are Jane Kasten, Vice President & Branch Manager and Karim Waheeb, Vice President & Business Banking Officer both of Lakeland Bank. Driven by the company tagline “We’re Simplifying Banking,” Kasten and Waheeb work together to offer professional service and individual solutions to meet the personal and business banking needs of their customers. One of the investments Little Falls business owners may want to take advantage of is the Small Business Group at Lakeland, which Waheeb leads for the area. Lakeland sees the small business community as one it wholly understands and can serve as an unmatched partner for, as Waheeb notes his satisfaction in “having the opportunity to work with small business owners to nurture and grow their business. Lakeland Bank makes it simple as we have all the resources that a business would need regardless of the stage of the business cycle.”
Kasten agreed, dovetailing Waheeb’s words by sharing “it has been thrilling to see the financial dreams of our Little Falls branch customers come true; that our team has a small part in making that happen is quite rewarding.” Lakeland has modernized its location at 86-88 Main Street to enhance the customer experience and continues to provide best in class online and mobile banking solutions while maintaining its ability to offer the friendly, personalized service many consumers expect from their local, community bank. Lakeland Bank is committed to being part of the continued growth and development in Little Falls and Jane Kasten and Karim Waheeb are dedicated to serving as a partner, resource, and trusted advisor for members of this community.

reat things come from meaningful collaborations—and the efforts of the Little Falls Alliance for a Better Community (ABC) exemplify this tenet. The organization preserves and enhances the town’s business districts, parks and recreational and cultural areas in conjunction with the town’s revitalization efforts. Accomplishments have included the beautification of Main Street and surrounding areas; upgrading the town tennis courts; and receiving a tri-state grant for crosswalk safety. One of the Little Falls ABC’s major redevelopment projects, funded through the Passaic County Open Space Grant, was for the revitalization of the Morris Canal. As the organization celebrates past accomplishments, they also look forward to present and future projects. In celebration
of their 10th year, Little Falls ABC will hold free summer concerts and a marketplace through the summer. Other projects from this year include Earth Day, the 9/11 Annual Tribute, Little Falls Magazine, pedestrian/ school safety, regulating truck sizes, and securing future grants to beautify and improve promenade areas, and providing information and support for mid-town direct trains, environmental solar energy, and redevelopment and revitalization. “You can take pride in knowing that your donations will be used for the beautification and enhancement of Little Falls,” said ABC President Renea Shapiro. Straightforward Resolutions to Family Law Issues By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

“
amily law is one of the most emotionally and financially complex areas of law,” believes Melissa Cipriano, Esq. “Having been through the process, I understand that clients experience emotions in an intensified form.” For that reason, Cipriano Law Offices advocates reaching a settlement rather than enduring a long litigation process. Family law encompasses divorce, child custody and support, adoption, prenuptial agreements and domestic abuse. All the attorneys at Cipriano Law Offices work as a team. They are mindful of the financial costs of each case and handle them efficiently. Cipriano describes the firm as mediation friendly, although divorce cases are prepared as if they will go to trial. The attorneys are qualified family law mediators. Cipriano cites the benefits of mediation as controlling the outcome of a case, protecting the interests of the client and children, and reducing fees and the timeline of the proceedings. The attorneys are members of the New Jersey Collaborative Law Group, which promotes a unified

She won the case, and has enjoyed watching that child grow up. Working in family law, Cipriano promises practical and straightforward legal advice to provide resolutions that are in the client’s best interests.

The Hot Spot for Your Fashion Finds Velvet Lush Boutique Offers Chic Women’s Styles By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photo by Dan Epstein
Tiffany Rolston
I
f you’re constantly shopping around for that Instagram-worthy ensemble, tired of struggling to locate the latest fashion trends, or, in need of that favorite outfit that inspires peers to ask: “Wow, where did you get that?”—your search ends at Velvet Lush Boutique. Velvet Lush Boutique offers a mix of brands and styles for fashionable, progressive women. Owner Tiffany Rolston opened the boutique after she grew tired of the same mainstream looks often sold by big-box retailers. At Velvet Lush, the clothes stand out, just like the women who wear them. “I really take pride in what I buy for the boutique, and try to buy things that are not just trendy, but also classic pieces,” said Rolston, a MOMtrepreneur and fashion
graduate of the Art Institute of Philadelphia. “The overall vibe is comfortable, carefree and very welcoming.” The hand-picked clothes are artfully displayed against the boutique’s bright and perky pink décor. Summer styles in stock at the moment include an array of vintage camouflage pants and jackets, Wildfox graphic tees, bell-sleeved tops, denim essentials and accessories. Shoppers can find something for date night, girls’ night or some casual pieces for Saturday morning errands. Plus, the selections available at Velvet Lush Boutique refresh biweekly— always offering customers something new to browse and try on. “This is my passion project. This is my small business that I’ve built in the midst of being Summer 2018
a mom, and I really appreciate the support from our amazing customers,” said Rolston. This super-chic women’s retail store is located in Woodland Park, but also offers some of their selections through their online boutique. Fashionistas can even follow them on Instagram to see what’s in store @ velvetlushboutique, and then head on over to try on what sparks their eye. Beginning June 23, Velvet Lush will be having a kick-off sip and shop event, showcasing a vintage, customized denim that will be featured throughout the summer.

Steps for
Growing Edible Herbs
H
erbs can bring a blend of beauty and functionality to your home garden, and growing them can be one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to try your hand at gardening.
Choose your herbs
Basil, chives, oregano, parsley and thyme are notorious for being fuss-free and perfect for those who may be new to gardening or growing herbs. You can also tailor your herb garden to your family’s favorite dishes. If they love pasta and pizza, try growing basil, oregano, thyme and garlic chives. For Mexican flavors, include cilantro, Mexican tarragon, epazote and lime basil. To complement Asian cooking, test your skills with lemon grass, Thai cinnamon basil or mint. You might want herbs to brew tea with such as mint, chamomile, lemon balm or verbena, or bergamot.
Select a site
Herbs are versatile plants that can be tucked into an existing planting area, grown in a dedicated plot or even planted in containers indoors by a sunny window. Most herbs are also attractive plants and can double as ornamentals mixed in with vegetables or flowers. Some, such as creeping thyme, rosemary and lavender, can even be used as ground covers or short hedges. Regardless of where you plant your herbs, it’s important to provide the correct growing conditions to help ensure that they can thrive and produce intensely flavorful leaves. Most herbs grow best in full sun, but some can also tolerate light shade.

Little Falls Auto Body Gets Cars Back in Good Shape By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein
A
fter a car accident, even a minor one, people are “distraught,” says Little Falls Auto Body owner Ryan Kowal. So, having a reliable, honest place to have the car repaired is vital. Locals know his shop is the place to go, he says—it’s been there since 1964, and repeat customers are his best references. Dealing almost exclusively in insuranceauthorized repairs, the shop fixes all makes and models, and accepts all insurance companies. “We do our best to make the process easy,” Kowal says. “We know people want their cars to come back to them in pre-accident condition.” Another way in which Little Falls Auto Body makes it simpler for customers to cope is by working with Enterprise Rent-a-Car. “Most people have rental insurance on their policies now,” says Kowal. “Enterprise picks them up, and they are never without a car during the repair time.”

When Buying or Leasing a Cadillac— Brogan Cadillac is the Smart Choice! The dealership has the largest selection of Cadillacs in northern NJ By Jackie Schatell, photo by Dan Epstein
C
hoosing the right car dealership is just as important as choosing the right car. When purchasing or leasing a Cadillac, Brogan Cadillac, located on Route 46 East, in Totowa, is the right choice for both.
A family-owned dealership that’s now being operated by 3rd- and 4th-generation family members, Brogan Cadillac has been helping people make the right car choices since 1927. While that may not be so hard when boasting the largest selection of Cadillacs to choose from in northern NJ, making the Cadillac shopping experience easy and hassle free is no small feat.
According to Thomas J. Ely, Owner/ Operator, the company’s mission statement is: “The success of our company begins and ends with employee and customer satisfaction. We are dedicated to treating all co-workers and customers with respect and courtesy. We will maintain leadership in our profession with enthusiasm, integrity and teamwork.” He added, “This mission statement reflects the ideals and beliefs of our company, which was the foundation put into place in 1927… four generations ago... when Thomas J. Brogan started a legacy that has grown over the years. Nurtured by employee and customer satisfaction, respect and courtesy.” Summer 2018
The dealership also maintains a huge pre-owned inventory of cars that have gone through a strict screening process. In addition, when it comes to service, all cars are cared for by an award-winning service department, which ranks 4th out of all 1,700 GM service departments in the US. When purchasing or leasing a Cadillac, look no further than Brogan Cadillac.

hen Dennis Messineo and Ellen Riccobono of Little Falls Trophy & Engraving walk into a restaurant, clubhouse, or home, they often spot an award their business created. Fifty-five years ago, the company began in Riccobono’s father’s basement; as the business grew, he moved it from his home to a location on Route46, eventually moving again across the highway to its current location, formerly a Phillips 66. The business tripled in volume and the rest is history. Today, Messineo says proudly, it’s a community institution.
Dennis Messineo, Mayor James Belford Damiano & Ellen Riccobono Little Falls Trophy & Engraving creates trophies, plaques, and glass, crystal and acrylic awards from an extensive selection available for view in their showroom. “Corporate, recreation, private awards—we do it all,” says Messineo, noting that they once constructed a 20-foot trophy for a motorcycle club. They also make medals. “A medal makes a kid feel like a million bucks,” he says. Dedication to customer service pays off—the shop’s oldest customer is 92, and still ordering trophies after 45 years. As Messineo says, “Everyone has an ego, and it needs to be recognized!”

A Hydrating Healthy Summer Must
WATERMELON W
atermelons are mostly water—about 92 percent—but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. There’s even a modest amount of potassium. Plus, this classic summer snack is fat-free, very low in sodium and has only 40 calories per cup.
Recent studies have found that watermelon seeds are also wonderfully nutritious, especially if they are sprouted and shelled. They are high in protein, magnesium, vitamin B and good fats, according to an analysis by the International Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences.

Come Home to Divina Ristorante Italian Cooking at Its Finest By Tonya Johnson, photo by Dan Epstein
M
ario Carlino started cooking in the kitchen with his mom and sister when he was 15 years old. Inspired by the two, he went on to attend culinary arts school in Salerno, Italy and worked hard for several years abroad before moving to the United States at the age of 23 to pursue the American dream. In 1994, the owner and head chef opened Divina Ristorante in Caldwell, and business has been booming for the past 24 years. With the help of 12 staff members, his wife– who works as the bookkeeper, and their college son–who pitches in part time when needed, the entire crew continues to strive for the excellent service that customers have grown accustomed to and keeps them coming back. “Our customers enjoy fresh quality ingredients, hot food with nice portions
and the price is right! Divina Ristorante is a family oriented place where everyone is always welcomed to come in and get a good meal,” Carlino said. Lasagna Alla Bolognese and Paccheri, a baked pasta dish filled with crabmeat and shrimp, top the list of favorite menu items to ask for. Weekly specials feature a rotation of meat, two different fish, and four types of pastas paired with vegetables and potatoes on the side. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Friday, 11:30am to 2:30pm for lunch and 4:30 to 9:30pm for dinner. Stop by on Sundays after 3pm for a taste of Italian Sunday Sauce made of pasta, baby meatballs, short ribs, beef and sausage. Divina Ristorante homemade cheesecakes are very light and always in season with raspberry in the spring, blueberry in the summer and pumpkin in the fall.
