Letter from the Mayor
I
would like to congratulate 13-year Livingston residents David and Cathy Black on their first edition of Inside Livingston. This new publication’s initiative is to further help Livingston businesses and residents connect, something we strongly support. In case you did not know, Cathy and David also are the publishers of Suburban Essex Magazine. Our town continues to be among the top places in New Jersey to live, work and shop. Livingston’s school system and town services are always top-notch. Our business community is becoming stronger and stronger, due to all of the hard work by the Livingston Town Council, Planning Board, Business Improvement District, Chamber of Commerce and local businesses to provide a favorable environment for business to grow in Livingston. Better than most towns, our business community has come back strong from the recent economic downturn. Once vacant lots along Route 10 have filled up. Within the next year, a Shake Shack, Container Store, Blaze Pizza and Starbucks are coming to the Circle, and the Livingston Town Center will welcome Fan Bistro and Restore Cold Press. We also look forward this year
The Reading and Learning Center of Livingston
to developing a Livingston business app featuring sales, loyalty programs and other ideas and promotions to help our businesses grow. The Livingston Town Council and Planning Board have worked hard with the Business Improvement District and local businesses to provide a favorable environment for business to grow in Livingston. We encourage our residents and businesses to join at least one of our over 40 volunteer boards and committees, which clearly make Livingston so special. These groups continue to be our lifeblood for good ideas, initiatives and new thinking. Check out Inside Livingston and log onto www.LivingstonTownship.org to learn how you can get involved. Have a great Spring! Alfred Anthony, Mayor, Livingston Township

Craig Melhorn, President and Stacy Melhorn, Captain
Become a Member of a Force for Good By Bob Faszczewski, photos by Dan Epstein
S
ince 1950, the all-volunteer Livingston First Aid Squad (LFAS) has been responding to a wide-range of medical emergencies—spanning the gamut from simple bone injuries to heart attacks. With the recent addition of a daytime shift, the LFAS is looking to add to its ranks. Besides handling emergencies for Livingston residents and businesses, LFAS covers many of the Livingston High School varsity football games, and sends an ambulance to special events that take place within the community. LFAS also provides demonstrations for such organizations as the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, the Girl Scouts and schools in the community.
Squad President Craig Melhorn says that the sense of accomplishment this service offers is unparalleled, and urges anyone with an interest to call. “Although we are covering almost all of our critical nighttime hours,” he notes, “we can always use more help, and now are staffing a daytime crew.” In order to become a member, a volunteer must be at least 18 years old and either a certified Emergency Medical Responder or a New Jersey-certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The Red Cross sponsors EMT training courses, which takes approximately 200 to 250 hours. The LFAS offers training approximately Continued on page 10 Spring 2016

once a year for those interested in joining as well as for the community at large. For those interested in joining, Day Crews are required to ride 24 hours per month, while Night Crews are on duty seven pm until seven am once every 12 nights in addition to three, four-hour weekend shifts on a quarterly basis. Monthly LFAS meetings and training sessions are held. The majority of the 37-member squad holds full-time jobs. Melhorn followed in the footsteps of his father, Ted—a life member with 25 years of service—joining
the LFAS in September 1992. His wife Stacey has been a member for 16 years, currently serving as Captain. For more information, call the Livingston First Aid Squad at 973-992-2373, Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm, or visit www.lfas.org.

Therapy for the 21st Century Roseland Psychotherapy Associates Meets Clients Where They Are By Martta Kelly, Photo by Dan Epstein
R
oseland Psychotherapy Associates (RPA) offers a wide range of specialties under one roof. In existence for 15 years, RPA moved to its new, larger location on Eagle Rock Avenue in Roseland about a year-and-a-half ago to accommodate its ever-growing staff and client base. Overseen by three partners—Beth Levy-Merlin, MSW, LCSW; Julie Potischman, LPC; and Michael Overland, Ph.D.—the office includes 16 associates and a psychiatrist. “When we meet with a new client, we conduct a thorough assessment to determine what they are seeking to get out of therapy,” Levy-Merlin said. “Once we have this crucial information, we are able to match them up with a therapist that best suits their needs.”
“Web therapy/online counseling “is particularly helpful to those unable to attend traditional in-office therapy…” —Beth Levy-Merlin, partner Treatment specialization includes, but is not limited to, individual and couples counseling; anxiety, depression and grief counseling; sex therapy; family counseling; work and career issues; post-partum depression counseling; and gay/lesbian/transgender issues. Group therapy sessions for many topics are available, including stress and anger management. For the convenience of their clients, RPA offers web therapy/online counseling. Consisting of a confidential and secure platform, web/telephone-based counseling is designed for people who cannot, for a variety of reasons, take advantage of traditional psychotherapy. Most experts concur that video-based therapy or telephone sessions provide the same positive results as conventional counseling and can be used in combination with face-toface consultations or as the sole method of counseling.
Web therapy/online counseling “is particularly helpful to those unable to attend traditional in-office therapy due to work schedules, disabilities, anxiety issues that prevent them from leaving their home, clients with young children at home, caregivers, students away at college or people who travel for business,” Levy-Merlin said. Due to their stellar reputation in the community, many local schools, businesses, and physicians confidently refer their clients for services at RPA. The partners are also proud to share that many clients come to RPA by word-ofmouth. RPA looks forward to another 15 years of working with the community.

Gorgeous Skin via Luxurious Waxing Get Pampered at European Wax Center Photos by Dan Epstein
E
uropean Wax Center (EWC) has become the industry leader in body waxing across the country. The concept of specializing in waxing was conceived by two brothers in Florida 13 years ago. Currently, over 500 EWC locations have opened nationwide, and it is one of the fastest growing franchises in the country.
“The Wax Center concept gives our guests the opportunity to experience the Ultimate Waxing Experience. Our waxers are trained to focus and specialize on the needs of each individual guest. The secret is in the wax, which adheres only to hair and not to skin. Livingston EWC consistently sees over 2,000 repeat guests every month. People love the service, the waxers and our prices,” explains Dean Kapneck, co-owner of the Livingston EWC. He continues, “We make waxing a part of your life, it’s no different than any other routine on your beauty list; i.e, getting your hair done, manicure, pedicure, and now waxing.” EWC guests enjoy packages that bring tremendous savings, and a staff with a phenomenal reputation. Products, such as ingrown hair serum and exfoliate, help in slowing growth in-between visits. Call for details about receiving a free first visit on specific services for both men and women (with proof of New Jersey residence). EWC is confident that once their professional service is experienced, visitors will become loyal guests. Kapneck and Audrey Klein introduced EWC to Livingston in June 2010. They also own five other EWC locations.

Your Hometown Hotel Just Got Even Better Meet the New Westminster By Nancy Crutchfield
W
hen asking Westminster Hotel’s General Manager Colin Ankersen, “What’s new?” the answer is well, quite a bit—including himself. Ankersen joined Westminster Hotel in June 2015, and that was just the beginning. Over the last ten months, almost everything at the hotel, except the owners, is new, with more in the works. Changes at Westminster include 75 newly renovated Club Level Rooms. These rooms boast tastefully understated décor that provide the utmost comfort in luxury surroundings. Even the air conditioning is a new, top-ofthe-line system. All are part of Westminster’s dedication to an unforgettable guest experience. Next on the list of coming improvements is the remaining guest rooms, meeting/ballroom and the lobby, which will be renovated in early 2017. Another recent addition is Tom Valenti, who joined Westminster as Culinary Director in November 2015. As the new Executive Chef of the Strip House, he brings Continued on page 21 Spring 2016

Continued from page 19 his award-winning expertise and special touches to the renowned steakhouse. In addition, he oversees all banquets, catering and room service. Valenti is community focused, relying on local markets and farmers in choosing the freshest and best ingredients. One thing that did not change, however, is that all guests receive Westminster Hotel’s signature services. Among the numerous luxuries befitting an award winning AAA Four Diamond Hotel, guests in the 185 beautifully-appointed rooms enjoy Wi-Fi, complementary transportation, a delicious hot breakfast and use of the Club Room and fitness center. The latter is another of the recent renovations, including state-of-the-art workout equipment and renovated pool. “When you are travelling away from home, we want you to feel at home here,” Ankersen says with all sincerity. “We are only as good as our last visitor.” Service and attention to detail is top notch as well, contributing to the exceptional value of this boutique hotel. He explains, “Word-of-mouth is so important these days and we are dedicated to exceeding the expectations of each guest.” Notably, rates here are lower than big name branded properties. Ankersen is quick to point out that Westminster serves not only the needs of travelers, but strives to be a part of the “family,” his term for “community.” Ankersen explains that Westminster provides beautiful settings for weddings, parties, anniversaries and all types of celebrations. Westminster also serves area businesses by providing upscale venues for meetings, conferences and events up to 800 people. Moreover, the hotel’s Spa is not open only to hotel guests, but for anyone who needs a little pampering and rejuvenation. Recently, Westminster’s Spa collaborated with Dieci Lifestyle Spa to offer the absolute best products and services to the local area. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a luxurious and indulgent experience. Ankersen brings over 30 years of hospitality excellence to Westminster. Originally from Denmark, Ankersen came to Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship. He also earned a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration there. Along with his wife and two children, he now calls North New Jersey home. Ankersen loves the beauty of the area, the community and the people. With a warm smile, Ankersen describes his favorite place on the grounds: “The Patio. It is beautiful. It has a soothing water feature and is a great place to relax with a glass of wine.” He invites everyone to his favorite place to affirm that life does not get much better.

A Legend in Its Own Wine Livingston’s Wine Legend Offers Wide Variety and Unmatched Customer Service By Deborah Schapiro, photo by Dan Epstein
W
hen Mahesh Lekkala opened Wine Legend back in 2002, to some extent he was going into the “family business.” His in-laws owned a beer and liquor store, which he took and grew into the three to four thousand bottle inventory of wines, beers and premium spirits it now houses. Through the years, the store has developed a reputation as being a high-end wine source, but as Lekkala notes, “We are not just high-end. We also carry a lot of very good, everyday wines for under $10.” The store’s philosophy is that you must have “something for everyone” and its large selection of beers, craft beers, spirits and wines offers that and a whole lot more. The Wine Legend is known to have the best prices in NJ, and will match any of its competitors’ prices.
“People are becoming much more knowledgeable and are now more open to trying new wines than they used to.” —Mahesh Lekkala The greatest number of bottles sold at Wine Legend comes from California, followed by Italy and France. The store also carries wines from Australia, South America and numerous other countries. “Everyone is making really good wine now—maybe it’s the improved technology,” Lekkala notes. He has seen a dramatic change in his customers’ purchases over the last five years or so: “People are becoming much more knowledgeable and are now more open to trying new wines than they used to.” Even with so many new options, some things remain constant. Lekkala says, “We sell mostly reds in the winter and whites in the summer. People want reds as the weather gets colder, and often have particular wines that they always want for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our customers also appreciate that we carry a good selection of kosher wines.”
Great service from the time customers enter the store until they reach their cars is the norm at Wine Legend. Customers regularly enjoy expert assistance when choosing a bottle. Lekkala has taken many wine courses and is happy to walk a customer up and down the aisles to choose the perfect bottle for any occasion. The store has also expanded into beverage catering, both in customer’s homes and at a number of venues in and around Livingston. Lekkala says cheerfully, “You have to carry everything a customer wants.”

This year’s Memorial Day Parade will start at 9:30am with a ceremonial service at the Oval to commemorate those who have died defending the United States. At 10am after the ceremony, the parade will start on S. Livingston Avenue and will end at Congressional Parkway. In the event of inclement weather the ceremonial service will be held at the LHS Auditorium. The Livingston Historical Society invites the public to visit the Historic Ely Cemetery on Hillside Avenue from 2-4pm. This is the private burial ground of Captain William Ely and his family. The cemetery is the last resting place of generations of Ely’s as well as other prominent families with whom they inter-married, such as the Halsey, Smylie, Watson, Vanderpoel and others. Some were traders, soldiers, politicians, clergymen, or tavern-keepers, as well as successful farmers. Continued on page 26

he DJ is hot; the lighting, perfect. A professional server offers guests mouthwatering delights chosen from a custom menu of modern, upscale treats, while mixologists at the bars tempt with a speciallydesigned signature cocktail. What is this ideal party/event venue? 4Sixty6Caterers, described by owner Bill Zolna as “the only place in the area that has what we have…a New York-style club atmosphere, complete with a $2 million lighting and sound system.”
COMPLETELY NATURAL Completely Creative
The former nightclub, taken over by Zolna and partner Jude Roppatte in 2015, only hosts one event at a time. “It’s an exclusive party space for your guests, with a rotating dance floor, a fireplace, an outdoor seating area with cabanas,” says Zolna. “4Sixty6Caterers is absolutely state-of-the-art.”
Residential & Commercial Services Complete Landscape Design & Installation Lawn Maintenance • Organic Fertilization Programs Seasonal Clean-Ups • Plant Care, Installation & Pruning Brick Paver Driveways, Walkways, & Patios Drainage Systems • Interlocking Retaining Walls
Zolna and Roppatte each have decades of experience in high-end catering and event management. They are proud of the fact that many of their staff has been with them for years, which adds to the welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere of 4Sixty6Caterers events. Their chef meets with each client personally to create a menu based on the event’s theme, when necessary. Their on-site IT engineer ensures everything functions perfectly throughout the evening. Zolna emphasizes that 4Sixty6Caterers is not an “event hall,” but rather a fun environment where guests will be immersed in a unique celebration—something truly unforgettable.

hy hang on to old, outdated jewelry, unused sterling flatware or a longneglected coin collection? At American Gold & Diamond Buyers, clients exchange collections for cash, netting the best prices in the area. American Gold & Diamond Buyers purchases diamonds, gold, silver and platinum, estate jewelry, engagement and wedding rings, sterling flatware, watches and coins. “Most people aren’t aware of current values,” notes owner Darryl Gay. He recalls a client who brought in an 1889 Morgan silver dollar. The coin was in good condition and had a rare date. “The client was expecting $100. I offered $4,500, and took her breath away!” Gay faithfully tracks pricing on diamonds, gold, silver and platinum. “It’s like the stock market,” he quips. “It fluctuates.” Gay’s advice for people who are holding out, hoping that prices go up in order to sell: “Why wait? Prices can go lower as well. Experts can’t time it perfectly, so enjoy the cash today.” Payouts are based on quality, condition and resaleability. “Our evaluations, by myself and my experienced appraisers, are honest, accurate and extremely

VEGAS NJ
“There’s No Venue Like It” By Jeremy Blomstedt
N
ot long ago, private event pioneers Sam and Melanie Pellegrino, the owners of Powerhouse Studios, decided to open a third location to join their East Hanover and Paramus sites. But they wanted to change the game again. And so Vegas NJ was born—a contemporary venue that provides an upscale, high quality experience yet costs less than renting the typical banquet space. “There’s no venue like it,” Sam said proudly. The Randolph location indeed is unique, featuring the cool, sophisticated feel of a contemporary nightclub with a touch of Las Vegas-style glamour. In other words, it is an ideal spot for upscale events, such as Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, wedding receptions and corporate gatherings. Vegas NJ, just like the other Powerhouse Studios locations, is an all-inclusive venue. Customers need not worry about hiring outside vendors, which saves money and time, and keeps stress levels to a minimum. All events are tailored to each individual party, so customers can get what they want, how they want it.
The customer has been king for the Pellegrinos for more than 30 years, and that philosophy extends to Vegas NJ. Personable staff focuses on clients, providing friendly, responsive service. When customers make contact, Sam says, “we get back to [them] within 24 hours.” The Pellegrinos periodically host open events at Powerhouse Studios. Take advantage of the showcase and food tasting at Vegas NJ on Wednesday, April 27th, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The evening will feature entertainment by the venue’s “party personalities,” who are the emcees and dancers whose vibrant performances bring even more life to events. The public is cordially invite to attend; register at www.bit.ly/VegasNJ.

Fun, Food and Friends! Cedar Hill Golf & Country Club adds Mini-Spa Days, DJ’s, Guest Chefs, Live Entertainment and more! Photos by Dan Epstein
L
ivingston’ s Cedar Hill is leading the way in transforming country club life into a full social and lifestyle experience for area residents—golfer and nongolfers alike. Club president Jeff Feldman states, “We are really excited about our new line-up of activities, programs and events. Our new general manager has been putting together a full calendar that adults and the entire family will enjoy, including Ladies Night Out, Drive-In Movie Night for Kids, Poker & Cigar Nights and much more.” Already known for it’s championship 18-hole golf course, Cedar Hill has Har-tru tennis courts and a heated swimming pool complex where great summer parties are already planned. Events make Cedar Hill an easy place to meet new people and make great connections that can last a lifetime. Last year Cedar Hill unveiled it’s newly renovated bar, lounge and dining rooms. Drawing rave reviews, these renovations make the club a perfect venue to meet friends before and after dinner. Cedar Hill is a private club whose members enjoy an upscale atmosphere with a relaxed dress code. Club members feel like time spent there is like therapy.
“Every time we come to Cedar Hill, it’s like being on vacation. There’s nothing like dining on the patio with the scenic sunsets overlooking the golf course.” — Terri A., 5 year member “The Dining membership alone is fantastic… Great, fresh food prepared the way you like it—convenient, no cleaning up, no tipping—just sign your account number!” — Noreen P., 15-year member Recognizing that society’s needs have changed, today people have different priorities and time constraints. Cedar Hill now offers different membership levels so people can choose the plan that best fits their lifestyle, whether they golf or not. Feldman continues, “I encourage anyone who wants to have fun, and could use a break from everyday rigors, to bring their friends and family to visit Cedar Hill. Now is the best time to explore membership. We welcome everyone to call or go online to learn more and register for a complimentary one day guest pass.”

Mozzarella Santa Lucia Salad
Lobster Ravioli
This ever popular salad is made with fresh mozzarella, house-roasted peppers, imported sopressata & prosciutto di parma, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, onions & tomatoes and are layered over mixed greens with a balsamic vinaigrette.
Handmade lobster ravioli in a lobster cream sauce. Truly decadent, yet also light because all of the pasta and sauces are made in-house. In Italy, sauces are more so considered a condiment and they truly want the texture and taste of the pasta to shine though. Everything should compliment each other!

These ribs are tender and the meat falls right off the bone. Ribs are prepped each day and are moist and meaty— grilled over an open flame and covered with their sweet hickory BBQ sauce. An order of ribs comes with fries.

Irving’s takes great pride with their sandwiches. The NYC Deli style sandwiches are so much more than just two slices of bread and what goes in the middle. Their authentic tasting sandwiches are genuine Comfort Food. For this deli experience you must have the devotion and care put into each sandwich. (and the same goes towards the pickles and Cole slaw.)

A True Livingston Legend The Landmark is Our Area’s “Cheers” By Katrina Musto, photo by Dan Epstein
C
ozy and inviting, The Landmark reels in those from all walks of life with its friendly atmosphere and home-cooked meals. A former 1882 stagecoach stop, the establishment has become Livingston’s version of “Cheers,” where families and friends come together to share stories and bond over a hearty menu. Each day begins with cooks slicing fresh produce and devoting time to preparing pizza dough. Patrons love the thin crust bar pies–the “Old World Pizza” keeps them coming back for more. Other fan favorites include the juicy barbecue ribs. Proving some things truly are worth the wait, The Landmark serves its delicious macaroni and cheese only on Fridays. With fresh salads, signature burgers and numerous beers on tap, customers love spending time at a place that is like a second home to many. The local hangout sees many reminiscing about having their first beer there decades ago when the drinking age was 18, proving whether new or old memories are being made or recalled, The Landmark is the place to be.
