Innovative valve replacement surgery. Because you can’t be replaced. As New Jersey’s most extensive heart care network, RWJBarnabas Health performs more Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR) than any hospital or health care system in the state—and our outcomes far exceed national benchmarks in safety, life expectancy, and risks of complications, too. Available at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, patients usually go home only a few days after the procedure. hen it comes to eye care, the Northern New Jersey Eye Institute, located in South Orange, offers everything under one roof. Whether patients seek a general eye examination, surgical procedures (such as cataract removal or laser surgery), LASIK, or cosmetic procedures such as blepharoplasty (removal of bags and puffiness around the eyes), the specialists at the Eye Institute have their patients covered, with safe, state-of-the-art procedures. “The good news for many people having cataract surgery is that there is no longer a need to put drops in their eyes post-surgery, as we are now able to place medication in the eye during the procedure,” said Dr. Charles J. Crane, one of several board certified physicians at the Eye Institute. Other new advances include surgery for patients who are both near- and far-sighted, even those with astigmatism; and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).

Going Beyond the Limits

O

bviously, he was not advocating going so fast that you spin out and crash; he was talking about pushing the limits, going beyond what is safe and taking a calculated risk. In life and in business, the only way to test your limits is by opening the throttle and going forward, past the point you think you can achieve. Sometimes pushing the limits means seeing the invisible, going after opportunities other people do not see. Jim McCann, founder of 1-800-FLOWERS in Westbury, New York, is constantly looking for those opportunities. “I ask myself, ‘When I look back five years from now, where will the really big opportunities have come from? What are the things I’m going to look at and wish I had done?’ That forces you to take your best guess, with the evidence in front of you, as to how the business world is going to change – and make sure you’re positioning your company to be at the edge of that change.” You do not have to be extraordinary to accomplish extraordinary things, but you do have to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your vision, even if it is extreme. Entrepreneur and world champion skateboarder Tony Hawk pushes the limits in both sports and business. “No matter how far you go with skating, you’ve got to keep challenging yourself. Even if you’re

When you are older and looking back on your life, you will not be telling stories about the times when everything came easily. You will be talking about the things that were most challenging, and therefore most exciting. Every day you should ask yourself: What new information have I learned today? When you are pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, you are almost always guaranteed to learn something new that can be used in a positive way to move forward, but you have to look for it.

Everyone Can Benefit From Natural Look Permanent Makeup Clients are Treated by Internationally Sought-After Plastic Surgeons’ First-Choice Practitioner By Jackie Sawyer, photo by Dan Epstein

W

hile enhancement through permanent or reconstructive cosmetic makeup is popular—not all centers are the same. At Natural Look Permanent Makeup in West Orange, which is owned by Mary Ann Velardi, clients receive personalized services by a seasoned practitioner. Velardi is not just an artist trained in color mixology and biology working in congruence with doctors—she is a soughafter expert by leading plastic surgeons, with clients traveling abroad for her services. A certified instructor, Velardi is also honing the skills of future practitioners. She says the business is changing, with some clients coming for corrections to work done by inexperienced practitioners who took quick classes in microblading and makeup, but lack the skills and practice needed for success. “It’s important to see a reputable person who’s trained and Board of Health certified,” said Velardi. Velardi strives to make people feel attractive via enhanced lips, eye lashes and more,

and prides herself for restoring eyebrows and creating realistic-looking areolas for cancer survivors.

Mary Ann Velardi

As the daughter of the founder of Beauty Doctor™, beauty is in Velardi’s blood. Her mom says she was a prodigy at five, applying makeup and artificial nails to perfection. Velardi completed beauty school before attending Palm Beach University as a biology major, where she planned to become a plastic surgeon. However, her artistic eye and background led to being lauded for her ability to perfectly place pigment. “Some surgeons say I do such a great job their patients no longer need eye lifts,” she said.

A LIVINGSTON LANDMARK

The Historic Ely Cemetery Photos by Cathy Black

L

ocated on the west side of Hillside Avenue in Livingston, the Historic Ely Cemetery has great historical significance to the town. As the private burial ground of Captain William Ely and his family, the cemetery is recognized as a historic landmark.

Captain Ely was a veteran of the Colonial Wars. Beset with financial problems and barely able to eke out a living from their land in Lyme, Connecticut, the Elys moved to present-day Livingston, New Jersey in 1756, where they settled “on the Orange Mountain.” A year before the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, one one-quarter acre of his farm was set apart for a family burial ground, which was surrounded by a wall of native granite that was quarried on the Ely farm. The cemetery is the final resting place of at least six generations of Captain Ely’s descendants who were laid to rest by the late Victorian era; as well as other prominent families with whom they inter-married, such as the Halsey, Smylie, Watson, Vanderpoel and other families. They were traders, soldiers, politicians, clergymen, tavern-keepers, and successful farmers. The cemetery has several large monuments as well as antique sandstone slabs, granite headstones and marble tablets. The last burial, that of Janet Halsey Olstead, took place in 1978. She was an eighth-generation descendant of Captain William Ely. The members of the Livingston Historical Society, court appointed trustees of the cemetery, invite the public to visit the Historical Ely Cemetery on Memorial Day or Veteran’s Day, between the hours of 2–4pm; free of charge. Donations to help maintain this historic landmark are gratefully accepted. To contact the Society, e-mail: LivingstonHistoricalSociety@yahoo.com.

e are excited to be celebrating our 15th year in Livingston,” says Claudia Hollander, owner and gym director of The Little Gym of Livingston. “We moved into the Livingston Town center five years ago, and our customers seem to really like this location.” Serving between 350-450 children ages 4 months to 13 years, The Little Gym is open year-round, offering classes in gymnastics and sports skills, as well as parent/child classes for ages 4 months to 3 years. The facility also offers birthday parties and summer camps. Pre-K “Three Dimensional Learning” includes “Get Moving,” “Brain Boost,” and “Citizen Kid” components. Notes Hollander, “Our new boys-only grade school class has been a huge success, and we now see more and more boys staying with the program.” Parents are encouraged to make an appointment to speak with a staff member, and see exactly what The Little Gym classes are like. “We offer a three-week trial period for $45, so parents get a better idea of our programs,” says Hollander. For new parents of infants 4-10 months old, a free class is available.

Is Your Life in Balance? DAILY HEALTHY HABITS TO CONSIDER

E

very so often, it’s important to take stock of your routine and make improvements where necessary.

Find Time to Decompress • If you’re a morning person, get out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal to wake up with your favorite coffee or tea and think about what you need to accomplish for the day. • More of a night owl? Spend at least 30 minutes before going to sleep to unplug from technology and relax with a new book you’ve had on your list to read. • Schedule time for exercise to reduce stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Planning workouts ahead of time will make you more likely to stick to them.

Write Everything Down • Handwritten notes and to-do lists will reinforce your memory of the tasks you need to conquer. They also give you the option to look at what you need to do for the day and prioritize the list. Consider a personal planner. • Documenting your day not only keeps you organized, but also provides you with an opportunity to look back and reflect on your life’s accomplishments, memories and milestones from the year.

Balanced Diet, Balanced Life • Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will help you feel great, and can increase your focus, energy levels and productivity. • Plan out your meals ahead of time before going shopping by marking them in a calendar. This will give you more time during the week to cook and prepare meals, without having to make frequent trips to the store or feel tempted to grab take-out. You’ll be more likely to stick with the habit if you love the calendar you use. • Cooking your own fresh meals can help keep your bank account balanced, and is often much healthier than food from a restaurant. And spending time in the kitchen is also a stress reliever for some people. Make a fresh start—today is the perfect day to make positive changes to how you schedule and organize your time. —StatePoint

Green Hill Senior Living Leaders in LGBT Senior Housing and Care

G

reen Hill Senior Living in West Orange, NJ has been a leading voice of innovation in senior care in New Jersey since 1866. In the 21st century, innovative leadership led to the building of the first Green House® Homes in the state promulgating person directed care across senior care levels. Today, Green Hill is leading the discussion and implementation of LGBT welcoming senior care communities in NJ. Green Hill in collaboration with Garden State Equality has launched the LGBT Senior Housing and Care Needs Assessment Survey to NJ’s LGBT residents 55 and older. Green Hill and New Jersey LGBT stakeholders have joined together to create a model of best practice in long-term care housing and services for LGBT seniors of all economic levels, race, religions and cultures, and to advocate for and share this model across the aging services field. The results of the LGBT Senior Housing and Care Needs Assessment Survey will be instrumental in developing this best practice model.

“It is time to integrate our specialized training in providing a welcoming home and person directed life and health care for our growing LGBT elder community with programming and support services needed and desired across the care spectrum to ensure the LGBT community is well-served, and feels at home in a community care setting,” said Donna Lazartic, Green Hill Executive Director-President. To respond to the survey go to: https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/LGBTSeniorHousingandCare, or visit www.Green-Hill.com to link to the survey. Deadline is May 15, 2018. The results of the survey will be shared with the public at the 1st LGBT Senior Housing and Care Expo in New Jersey Saturday, June 9th, 2018, 10am-4pm at Green Hill, 103 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. Show Your True Colors With Collegemania’s Customized Silkscreen Products By Cynthia Burns, photo by Dan Epstein

S

igns of Collegemania’s high quality and attention to detail abound. The company produces customized silkscreen and embroidered apparel items for schools, corporations, notfor-profits and individual clients. Owned by father and son Richard and Rick Shue, the company has a solid 20-year business record. “We’ve upgraded machinery and service capabilities,” says Rick. An automatic printing machine is capable of printing large orders with up to eight colors. Shue explains, “This lets us provide faster turn-around times, process a higher volume of work and minimize the cost to clients.” Customized silkscreen printing is used to create logo-specific sports apparel including sweatshirts, sweat pants, hats, T-shirts and sports jerseys. The Shues also customize varsity jackets. Collegemania fulfills orders of logo-embossed apparel for schools, promotions, golf outings, fundraisers, charity events, family outings and more. The company excels within the high school market, whether it be durable team sports jerseys or T-shirts for the cast of a theater production. “We also have clients who order products for their child’s bar or bat mitzvah,” notes Shue. “We take the job from start to finish or clients can provide their own apparel.”

Rich Shue The business has a robust word-of-mouth reputation that has drawn clients from surrounding areas including Little Falls, Teaneck and Kinnelon, among others. The Shues, however, consider Collegemania very much a local business. Richard is a resident of Livingston and Rick is a graduate of the town’s high school.

hen it comes to home improvement, modern technology is a game changer! “Customers are savvy and demand more. People create vision boards and design ideas for a particular space in their home,” said Angel Martin, co-owner of Affordable Closets Plus in Bangor, PA. She loves to spend time with the customer who knows that they want but may not have the exact solution–so that is where their expertise and experience can help. And thanks to “Pinterest, Houzz, and HGTV, the industry has advanced tremendously!” Martin said. She left the pharmaceutical industry close to 15 years ago to infuse her sales and marketing background into the family owned business that her husband, DeVoe

DeVoe Martin launched in 1993. Back then, he wanted a stronger web and marketing presence for Affordable Closets Plus. With numerous referrals and participation in designer show house events over the years, the business has been thriving ever since! Affordable Closets Plus designs, manufactures, and installs projects throughout the New York/ New Jersey Tri-state area. Repeat business can span anywhere from one month to a year, depending on the project. “When people call us, I don’t want them to think of us for just closets–the Plus part

means we offer more custom solutions for the home or office. We customize any type of closet as well as pantries, mud rooms, playrooms, and garage cabinetry, laundry rooms and more,” Martin said.

ycleBar®, a premiere indoor cycling facility in Livingston, promises to Rock Your Ride™. Members pedal and push their way to better health in a 1,500 square feet CycleTheatre® that houses 48 bikes. Instructors, dubbed CycleStars®, are part motivators, drill sergeants, DJs, fitness gurus and instructors. They encourage members to move, rock and pedal faster; and themed rides and timed races keep the workout fresh and exciting. Owners Delvin Burton and Dr. Charlotte Jones-Burton say, “A CycleBar class is a multi-sensory experience with thumping beats, entertaining music videos and state of the art lighting—like attending a rock concert.” Riders of all fitness levels choose from a variety of classes that provide a mix of strength, endurance, hills and drills; which allows the rider to modify the ride based on their level of performance. Classes are designed to offer a full body workout and a rigorous, low impact cardio experience. For those who are competitive, there are group challenges and rider competitions that use CycleStats® technology, which measures six key metrics of a member’s performance and tracks the progress of every ride.

Photo courtesy of CycleBar ® Livingston

The owners shared their first cycling class on a Mediterranean cruise to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary; after the class left them with a euphoric “rider’s high,” they decided to purchase an indoor cycling studio in order to recreate this experience for themselves and others. “At CycleBar Livingston our riders repeatedly have a fun and high energy experience that is personalized.” Dr. Jones-Burton states, “Customer service is a priority for us and our goal is to ensure that everyone who enters our studio feels welcomed and comfortable.” Another aspect that appeals to the owners is CycleGiving™, a tenet of the franchise that partners it with local organizations and charities to host fundraising rides to support an organization’s cause. Delvin and Charlotte invested in a CycleBar franchise because its business platform taps into their core values— health, fitness, community involvement and philanthropy. New members are encouraged to “rock their ride” with a free introductory session; and specially priced rider packages are available.

T

he Weiss Design Group, Inc., a third generation firm and a longtime fixture in Livingston, is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary with Ronald Weiss at the helm. As the principal architect, the dynamic, full service firm provides both interior and architectural design. Mr. Weiss perpetuates the design firm’s success along with his wife, Lori, and their very talented staff. He states, “There is a great thrill in creating spaces for everyone to use and enjoy and to have an impact on people’s lives.” Ron, who was born and raised in the town, assisted in revitalizing downtown Livingston’s business district. He has served as a volunteer for the Business Improvement District since 1999, and on the Architectural Review Committee since 2000, currently as Chairman. Notes Weiss, “It’s something I can do to give back to the town which has served me so well.”

Lori & Ron Weiss In light of their 30th anniversary, the firm is launching a campaign on social media to expose the public to the range of services they perform—from a single room in a home to a detailed 90,000 Sq. Ft. medical project. Other projects include Cedar Hill Country Club in Livingston as well as numerous professional, industrial and retail spaces. ith 65 agents, Coldwell Banker in Livingston is expertly staffed to work with both buyers and sellers. One example of that expertise is Betsy Bergman, who has more than 10 years of experience. Bergman works with both buyers and sellers, and the vast majority of clients seek her out based on referrals. “My ‘value added’ is that I’m very conscious of the client’s lifestyle and what community will be right for them,” she says.

Low inventory continues to make it a sellers’ market, so she educates her buyers on setting expectations; competing if a house gets multiple offers; and being ready to respond promptly with required documentation. “I put myself in the client’s shoes when I’m negotiating on their behalf,” states Bergman. Bergman also calls herself a “concierge” for pre-sell and post-buy services, referring trusted contractors, electricians, plumbers and others. “It’s why I got into this business,” she says. “I love the creative and networking aspect.”

The Sounds of Silence

From Psychologist to Audiologist: Dr. Enid Smith, Discount Hearing Aids By Christine S. Maxwell

A

s a psychology major, Dr. Enid Smith was inspired by a movie about a young deaf woman who became Hollywood’s first deaf stuntwoman. Deciding to switch tracks and help the hearing impaired function the best they could in a hearing world, she completed her Master’s Degree in audiology from Vanderbilt University and a Doctorate in Audiology from the University of Florida. Dedicated to helping those with hearing loss, Dr. Smith started a successful practice in Nashville, TN in the early 1990’s. After moving to New Jersey because of her husband’s job, she opened a similar business in Livingston in 2010–Discount Hearing Aids. Dr. Smith’s services include hearing evaluations, ear cleaning, sales, repairs, adjustments and cleaning of hearing aids. She offers quality brand name hearing aids such as Signia, Starkey, Widex and Oticon. Dr. Smith delivers these quality products through a unique patientcentered business model. “I give the patient information and help them make an informed decision. I am about rehabilitation, not sales. I detest the medical model of ‘Do As I Say’ and want the patient to understand the process and be part of the solution,” she says. She may spend several hours with a patient, if that is what the patient needs. At her office she can demonstrate better hearing by fitting demo hearing aids on patients, and once the patient decides what they would like to try, she special orders the hearing aids for

Photo by Dan Epstein them. She can frequently get the hearing aid in her office within 48 hours after ordering. Not only is the service she offers unique, but her prices can be significantly lower than many of her competitors. “Hearing aids are not cheap. However, I try and offer a discount to make them a little more affordable,” she adds. Dr. Smith has earned a reputation as being a huge help to patients who have tried hearing aids unsuccessfully from other providers. Her intense service approach as well as listening to the patient and getting the product that is best for their situation has made a huge difference to many lives–both the patients as well as their family and friends! Discount Hearing Aids is by appointment only. Dr. Smith tries to offer appointments that do not conflict with work schedules. That means she is open to evening and weekend appointments as well as weekday regular business hours. In addition, she goes to nursing homes and patients’ homes when necessary. She prefers they come to her office, but will offer service in their home if that is their only option. “My patients are always a priority,” she states. “I treat them how I would want to be treated.”

ndy’s Family Music Center will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The beloved local business, which serves 500 students each week, is staying true to its original purpose, says owner Joe Vitello, “We ask the student, ‘What do you want to do to become great?’” The Center’s 22 instructors—teaching guitar, bass, violin, cello, drums, piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone, ukulele and voice—all specialize in one-on-one, individualized lessons. “If a voice student wants to do Broadway, they can. If a guitar student wants to learn rock, they can,” says Vitello. The Center does not charge sign-up or cancellation fees, “and you can stop or start anytime you want.” Students range in age “from 4 to 70,” he says. “It’s never too late to learn.” And speaking of learning, Vitello points with pride to the Center’s continuing support for area schools. “I believe in community, and giving back/getting back,” he says.

The Early School Offers Programs for Kids, Toddlers and Parents

H

oused in the Louis and Emily Slater Youth and Education Center of Temple B’nai Abraham, The Early School, an early childhood program for toddlers to age 5, is a child’s first formal learning experience involving progressive development in which each level has its own age-specific program and goals. The school offers before and after care hours from 8am to 5pm. All Early School programs welcome members and nonmembers. The Early School offers a comprehensive *STEAM based early childhood curriculum (*Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics), including Spanish, reading readiness, writing, movement and music and extended day activities. The Two’s, Three’s and K-Ready classes for 4- and 5-yearolds meet Mondays to Fridays. The Early Two’s program, for children who have turned two years old by March 31, focuses on separation, language development, social development, and gross and fine motor skills. This takes place in a nurturing environment that builds on the child’s self-esteem, identity and self-confidence. Tot Time, for parents/caregivers and their children ages 12 to 23 months, is an innovative program, offered on Tuesdays, from 9:30–11am. The Early School Camp, with their spectacular Splash Pad Park, is a great place to be for seven weeks during the summer, Monday to Friday, for 2- to 5-year-olds. Tot Time Camp, a program for parents with toddlers ages 12 to 23 months, which is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August, is an opportunity for parents and their young children to interact in a camp setting. For Early School information, contact Deborah Aronson Ziering, Director of Early Childhood Education, 973- 994-7016, or email dziering@tbanj.org.

What Cam’s Clients Think of Him… Cam is inexhaustible and innovative in his approach to selling your property. He has a unique understanding of the psychology of both buying and selling. Cam’s knowledge of his chosen career is phenomenal. This works in unique ways to make your experience with him as your agent unforgettable and very satisfying. I felt as though I was on a treasure hunt with him. It was fun, adventurous and granted, sometimes frustrating. I always had complete confidence that Cam would attend to any problems with the right decision. In short, he is your perfect agent because he just gives his all to fulfill your particular needs. —Joan & Louis Ciccone I’ve known Cam for more than four years and have depended upon his expertise twice. Cam is passionate about real estate. He is honest and positive. From the moment he stepped into my house for his presentation to the second we left the closing table he was supportive and devoted to my best interests. Cam helped us determine the fair market value for my home. He put together a well-thought out marketing strategy and used the latest technology and a targeted advertising campaign to attract buyers. My property was under contract in five days and closed for the asking price! I am so happy I followed his advice.

Cam listens to his clients and understands their needs. It is stressful to be involved in two real estate transactions at the same time – selling one property while buying another. Cam eased us through the process and made it much easier for us to cope. When challenges did arise, he was able to resolve them quickly and professionally. I have recommended Cam to many of my friends and family members. He is the person to call if you are seriously looking to sell your home. —Olger Fallas

Creating

Personal Spaces

Wendy Gonzalez By Christine S. Maxwell, photo by Dan Epstein

W

ith an online store and a brick and mortar location, Wendy Gonzalez, owner of Modern Ornament LLC, offers a variety of home products and services to clients throughout the United States. Gonzalez, an interior designer with 18 years of experience, started her retail and design business with the mission to bring quality and unique home accents to individuals. Her passion is all about creating spaces that reflect a client’s design personality and style. With a desire to share the unique products she learns about in her design travels and a goal of making these items accessible to the public, Gonzalez has modeled her business concept to bring together her passion for design and retail at the newly opened Livingston location. Both the online store and the Livingston store offer home décor, housewares, lighting, accent furniture, fair trade products, kids décor, petware and gift items. Launching the online store in September 2017, Gonzalez created an opportunity for clients to buy from her unique product catalog over the internet. She opened the Livingston store in January 2018 to enhance

the shopping experience for local clients. Besides seeing the items, her physical store provides a setting for customers to find inspiration through their purchase decisions as they are able to see the products showcased in collections and can easily group together items of similar styles. In the store, clients learn more about the products through conversations with Gonzalez. Gonzalez goes the extra mile to make sure her clients’ personal spaces are uniquely theirs. Through her many contacts within the United States and abroad, Gonzalez is able to source product requests and find the specific items that her clients are looking for. She has also teamed up with a local artist who adds distinct designs to her product collection. Throughout the year customers can shop special collections via events hosted at her store, as well as shop at her traveling Pop Up shop at private events, which will bring quality products to customers for a shopping experience at their location. For clients who prefer more extensive assistance in designing their personal spaces, Gonzalez offers complete Spring 2018

interior design services for residential and commercial projects alike. She can also assist with the placement and arrangements of items within the home through her interior staging services. “Our homes are special places like no other, they tell our story through design and create a place that’s unique and personalized just for us. Homes create an experience for everyone who walks through their doors and set an atmosphere for some of the most personal of moments in our day. The storytelling and personalization of a home fuels my passion to source unique collections and to design in a way that allows our customers to express a modern design style that is distinctively their own,” says Gonzalez.

BOOMERS: 10 Reasons to Go Nuts Ten Reasons to Go Nuts

F

or the roughly 75 million Americans who make up the baby boom generation, a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons against age-related diseases.

“It’s vital at any age to adopt good habits to live a strong, fit and healthy life,” says Dr. Mike Roussell, a nationally recognized nutrition consultant and nutrition adviser to Men’s Health and Shape. “Fueling your life with tasty and nutrient-rich foods while making sure to be active every single day are essential components to keeping your body young and vibrant.” Roussell’s recommendation? Nuts. In particular, pistachios. “Pistachios are a multitasking nut with fiber, healthy fats, and three specific types of antioxidants that may help fight the onset of age-related conditions that lead to poor health in these 10 ways.”

5. Blood glucose level Developing adult onset diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes, is a common fear for boomers. The American Diabetes Association praises the health benefits of nuts, including pistachios, calling them a diabetes superfood because they improve how the body’s cells use glucose and how insulin responds to a carbohydratecontaining meal, namely, stabilizing blood glucose levels.

6. Skin health and appearance UV light from the sun promotes damage and accelerates the aging of our skin. Pistachios contain two carotenoid antioxidants that are concentrated in the skin and work to filter out and protect it against the damaging effects of UV light.

7. Eyesight

1. Heart health

Pistachios contain lutein, a nutrient known to help improve eye health, especially in older individuals. Lutein has been shown to prevent and slow down macular degeneration by providing more pigment for the eye, thereby reflecting more of the sun’s light, preventing damage to the retina.

Large population studies show that people who regularly eat nuts, such as pistachios, have a lower risk of dying from heart disease or suffering a heart attack. Pistachios provide 360-degree cardiovascular support in that they can promote improvements in cholesterol levels, blood pressure and blood vessel function.

8. Memory

Excessive inflammation is one of the root causes of age-related conditions, such as arthritis. Pistachios contain a special form of vitamin E called gamma tocopherol, which has unique anti-inflammatory properties. Gamma tocopherol levels have also been shown to decrease as we age.

Preliminary research shows that the fatty acids and antioxidants found in pistachios can help support brain health. The antioxidants in pistachios can help ward off excessive inflammation in the brain, a major cause of accelerated cognitive decline. Another study found that eating pistachios stimulated brain waves that aid the formation of ideas and memory processing.

3. Weight loss

9. Sleep

2. Anti-inflammatory

Being overweight can also contribute to a number of age-related illnesses. Studies show pistachios positively promote weight maintenance as the dietary fiber, fat and protein all work together to make us feel fuller and satiated longer, plus removing them from the shell slows down eating. Pistachios are also the lowest-fat nut.

Nuts, including pistachios, are rich in minerals such as magnesium. One benefit of magnesium is that it may aid sleep because it assists in helping the muscles relax and quiet activity in the brain by working as an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

10. Energy

4. Digestion The fiber in pistachios also can help with digestion. Research shows that the fiber in pistachios works as a prebiotic and feeds the good bacteria in our digestive tract to improve the health of our digestive system. A single serving of pistachios contains as much as 3 grams of dietary fiber.

Pistachios have been shown to promote energy, which is why so many professional athletes consume them while training. More energy means we’ll commit to getting enough exercise. But what is Dr. Mike’s main reason for having his clients eat pistachios? “They taste good. People are much more likely to stick to a healthy diet when the food is tasty and fun to eat.” —(BPT)

Home & Garden

Your Garden Deserves a Raise! By Amanda Galasso

S

pring is just around the corner, and one of the most relaxing warm-weather activities is to spend time outside gardening. A simple, yet effective, way to garden is by making a “Raised Bed.” Think of a raised bed as your garden on a platform. By mounding or surrounding soil with pressure-treated wood or concrete blocks, raised bed gardens allow you to grow more in less space. In such a configuration, plants cover the entire surface of the beds, allowing gardeners to work from the paths. The plants’ roots grow straight down, as opposed to spreading out in search of moisture and nutrients. Vegetables (and other plants and flowers) thrive in the deep, loose and fertile soil. Some of the many benefits of raised beds include:

Less watering. The soil doesn’t become compacted

and result in runoff, since walking is limited to the paths. Instead, water is absorbed directly, and moisture is retained for a longer period of time.

Spring 2018

Pest control. For example, slugs and snails are prevented from infiltrating the beds. Burrowing rodents are discouraged with a low fence surrounding the bed.

Aesthetically pleasing. Whether it’s a square,

rectangular or circular shaped garden, raised beds keep your garden looking neat and tidy. Weeds also are reduced due to the lack of area to grow.

Easier for those with limited mobility. Since

raised beds are higher off the ground, kneeling and bending to tend is reduced, which relieves pressure on joints and your back.

Committed to Community Banking

L

ocated at 270 South Livingston Avenue, Livingston’s newest bank, Columbia Bank, has been designed around an enhanced customer experience featuring the latest in banking technology, including a video message screen, digital rate display and an “Intelligent ATM,” plus a modern interior design with low profile service units and private conference areas. According to Branch Manager Michael Novo, “Columbia’s Universal Bankers, specialists in both consumer and business banking, will provide quality services, second to none!” For 91 years, Columbia has offered value-added services…from traditional consumer passbook, checking and savings accounts…to loans and residential mortgages…to online/mobile banking with free applications that turn your device into a personal, 24/7 banker…to commercial and SBA loans, lines of credit and business

banking services that help any business grow. Retirement, health savings, wealth management and title services are also offered.

volunteers painted a school for the handicapped, built Habitat housing, kept food banks stocked, and even re-planted Liberty State Park’s public gardens.

Columbia’s commitment doesn’t end with its products and services either! The bank also believes in “giving back” to the neighborhoods they serve, part of their efforts to make a difference in people’s lives through donations, grants and volunteers. Feeding the hungry, creating affordable housing, supporting business growth and assisting the less fortunate – these are ways that they provide support to their communities annually.

Headquartered in Fair Lawn, Columbia has an asset base of more than $5.5 billion and operates nearly 50 full-service offices throughout NJ. So, whether providing banking solutions for individuals, families and businesses, or supporting their communities, Columbia remains committed to New Jersey. For information about Columbia Bank’s products and services, visit their website at columbiabankonline.com.

Last year, over $1 million was donated to charitable and community projects. Team Columbia volunteers also provided 7,500 service hours, with a near 100% participation level, helping 150 programs, events and causes. For example, these Spring 2018

Great News for Portuguese Steakhouse Afficianados! Assado Steakhouse Has Opened in Livingston to Rave Reviews!

T

here’s no need to keep trekking to Newark or even New York City for top-notch steak and Portuguese food—now that Assado Steakhouse has opened to rave reviews in Livingston, NJ. Owned and operated by Livingston resident Wilson DeSousa, Assado, a rustic and modern Portuguese Steakhouse with a classy Manhattan look and feel, has opened at 222 N. Livingston Avenue. Assado offers on- and off-premises catering for all occasions and will soon boast outdoor seating. “I love that I can share my roots of traditional Portuguese cuisine with the community,” said DeSousa, who added that people are coming from all over the state to experience Assado—the only full-service BYOB Portuguese restaurant in NJ. Wilson DeSousa Photo by Dan Epstein

DeSousa is no stranger to the restaurant industry—he’s been the proprietor of Maize,

a Portuguese restaurant that has been located inside of the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ for a decade. And, he has brought Maize’s renowned Chef Joao Viana to serve as the head chef at Assado. Assado’s menu is huge and varied with diners able to choose from a myriad of traditional dishes including a 24 oz. Grilled Cow Boy Steak, Salted Cod, or Grilled Octopus, served over peppers, onions and Portuguese olive oil; Barbeque Whole Chicken, Beef Ribs or Pork, cooked over a charcoal grill pit; and many other dishes incorporating shrimp and mariscos in green or red sauce; as well as the ever-popular Seafood Combo for Two, which includes a whole lobster with grilled scallops, clams, shrimp and calamari.
