C
ongratulations to Cathy and David Black on their second edition of Inside Livingston! The first edition received so much acclaim around town for its beautiful production and informative content that everyone has been anxiously awaiting the second edition, which is now here. Since the last issue, I’m happy to report that Livingston and its volunteers experienced one of its best summers ever. We had enormous attendance at some of our traditional events such as Youth Appreciation Week, and the Fourth of July that included the exciting Nerds, a terrific car show and fireworks, plus lots of fun activities for kids and record attendance at our beer garden. Night Out was also tremendously attended and included lots of new and fun activities as our community and police strengthened its relationship. Additionally, new events such as Summerfest burst on the scene that attracted over 7000 people to over twenty food trucks, fun duck races and swimming. The Pet Expo celebrated its second year with an increase in sponsorship and attendance as this new tradition provides opportunities to learn, adopt and help out our animal shelter. The New York Times gave us a glowing review in its real estate section finding the exceptional value, convenience
and service Livingston provides. Reporting that taxes are lower than other Essex County municipalities, the article notes Livingston “offers so much more value” and the market is “definitely on the rise.” Our town was also featured on Comcast Newsmakers numerous occasions this year. So what’s next? If you take a drive around town you will see the exciting new businesses coming to the circle such as Shake Shack, Container Store, Blaze Pizza, and Starbucks. You will see the new turf field construction on Madonna Drive that will provide countless more recreational opportunities for all of our youth sports in town. Our business district is booming as we have held nearly a dozen ribbon cuttings this year and have numerous more planned for the fall. Our municipal budget represented our lowest tax increase in a dozen years and we are headed in the right direction. Have a great Fall! Alfred Anthony, Mayor, Livingston Township

They Are Faster, Higher, Stronger— and Loved Shining Stars program is golden for special-needs kids By Janis Hashe
W
atching stunning Olympic athletes Simone Biles and Michael Phelps compete—knowing that neither has been without personal challenges—is a reminder of sports’ power to go far beyond physical accomplishment. Dr. Susan Ridley, Program Supervisor of Livingston’s innovative Shining Stars program for special-needs kids, has seen this power exemplified.
“It’s wonderful to see improvements in their skill level, verbal communication, problem solving, listening, and attention span, “ she says. “And the social interactions and friendships that develop are as important, if not more so, for children with special needs.” Founded in 2010 to provide recreational activities for special-needs children, Shining Stars has grown from seasonal sports to include adaptive recreation programs such as cheerleading, rock climbing, horseback riding, music and art therapy, and parent/sibling support groups. It became an official Special Olympics NJ Local Training Program, and a Shining Star won gold and silver medals in the most recent Special Olympics. The program also won a Physical Activity Champion Award from the New Jersey Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

“All this,” says Dr. Ridley, “is due to the commitment of Shining Stars volunteers, combined with support from Livingston Town Council, schools and community organizations.” Volunteers range from high-school students achieving community service hours towards graduation, to adults wanting to give back. These volunteers “shadow” program participants, acting as
coaches, mentors—and friends. Jessica Rossilli, who began shadowing when she was only in eighth grade, says,“When I grow up, I want to work with special-needs kids. Having an IEP [Individualized Education Program] myself, and having dyslexia I understand what these kids feel, and I want to give back.” Both middle-school and highschool-age kids with either IEP or 504 plans are eligible for Shining Stars. The program currently serves 49 children in 57 activities, says Dr. Ridley—and more growth is in the future. “We want to become a bridge for kids aging out of the system,” she says, citing adding instruction in computers and assisted technology, as well as acting as a resource center. Volunteers are always needed, and Shining Stars matches skills to participants’ needs. Visit the Shining Stars’ website (below) to download an application.

Find Out Why Kids Love Dr. Doug! By Nancy Crutchfield, photography by Dan Epstein
D
r. Doug Harte loves his work. He brings his friendly and fun personality with him each day. As a second-generation Orthodontist, (and third–generation dentist) he practices with his partner, dad, and best friend, Dr. Larry Harte. Their love for children and dedication to creating beautiful smiles has really set them apart for over 25 years. “It’s so heartwarming and amazing to be treating multiple generations of families” say the doctors. The practice utilizes state-of-theart technology including Invisalign for the most comprehensive and modern care for both kids and adults. They also offer Innovation braces which move the teeth quicker and with less discomfort. What is also very important is that Dr. Doug and Dr. Larry also provide early non-extraction treatments for very
crowded cases, crossbites and underbites. Harte Orthodontics is a family friendly place to visit complete with game room, coffee and beverage bar and free wifi for their patients. The goal is for the children to be eager to go to their appointments. The experienced staff is known for their gentle manner. They even provide a wonderful graduation ceremony for each child and adult that completes treatment including diploma, flowers, a motivational pep talk and goodies!
Harte Orthodontics 100 W. Mt. Pleasant Ave, Livingston 973-992-7558 | www.SmilesByHarte.com Consultations are always free.
Dr. Doug has sponsored the Livingston community and their sports teams for many years. “I always try to give back to the community which I have been a part
of for my entire life.” He and his wife Ronni have two children of their own; perhaps two “future orthodontists.”

F
or more than thirty years, CBL Fine Art has been the go to boutique for shoppers looking for something special. The store is filled with goods from around the world, handpicked by the owner, Connie Lior. “I personally select everything. Down to the greeting cards we sell,” said Lior. In addition to one-of-a- kind items, she usually picks a small quantity of each item the store carries in order to keep the merchandise varied and fresh. This strategy is one of the reasons customers keep coming back—there’s always something new and exciting. Offering a mixture of gift items, decorative accessories, handmade jewelry, artisan clothing, Judaica, colorful ceramics, blown glass and wall art, CBL really is worth the trip from anywhere. They even offer custom framing. “There’s a little bit of everything and something for everyone,” said Lior. CBL Fine Art also offers a bridal registry, both instore and online.
CBL Fine Art

CBL Fine Art’s customers have voted the shop Suburban Essex Magazine’s “Best of Essex” award six years in a row. The store has also received awards for best gift shop by NJ Monthly and NJ Jewish News (also Best Judaica and Best Decorative Accessories from the latter), as well as being named Niche Magazine’s Top 100 Retailer of American Crafts. CBL Fine Art has items priced for every budget—from $15 to $1,500—and each customer is given the same attention, no matter what range they’re looking for, because no one on staff works on commission. And all gift purchases receive beautiful, complimentary wrapping. Customer service is high on the priority list at CBL, with staff dedicated to helping customers find exactly what they want in-store or online, but if they can’t make it in and don’t find what they want online, they’ll happily take pictures of an array of items and let the customer select from those options. It›s a win-win for everyone. “My customers are like my family,” said Lior. “Whatever we can do to make the process easier, we’re here for them.” Fall 2016

orris Sign is successful because brothers Chris and Michael Hoehn and Michael’s wife, Maureen have embraced technological advances. The owners recognized with computer design capabilities, digital printing machines and vinyl die-cut plotters Morris Sign would be able offer the best service possible. Chris and Michael honed their skills from their father and great uncle who started Hoehn Sign Company in Newark in the 1930s. For the past 25 years, Morris Sign has served commercial and individual clients from its Whippany location. Professionals there have the expertise to find signage solutions to attract attention to a client’s business. Maureen notes that Morris Sign fabricates and installs custom, carved, monument and magnetic signs and banners. They do door and window lettering as well as storefront signs. They can even do lettering for office walls. The company also refurbishes existing signs. And it’s not just brick and mortar signage. Vehicle wraps are popular. Once hand-lettered, now the product is digitally produced vinyl. Integrity, full service and customer care are hallmarks of the company. “If it’s a sign, we make it,” says Maureen.

Bar Mitzvah Photojournalism An Interesting Approach to Your Memories
Photography by Dan Epstein Dan Epstein has been photographing Bar Mitzvahs for twenty years. At the very heart of his style of Bar Mitzvah coverage is the notion that while the big moments are important to cover, it’s the little, candid, often un-noticed moments that give you pause, create a lump in your throat, and are the memories you cherish most in years to come. A working photojournalist for most of his career, his newsmagazine photo credits have included: Time, Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, and many more; and it’s those skills and that experience that make his photo coverage of family life-cycle events special. His photographs are un-staged: “I follow no formula”, he says as he relies on his own sensitivity, experience, and sense of humor as he makes emotionally resonant images that reveal stories and personalities and most importantly transcend the obvious. “I started my career as a fashion photographer,” he shares, “so I can make the portraits that families expect, in a manner as rich and stylish as fashion ads you see in magazines, but I believe it’s the candid moments that
Dan Epstein Photography www.danepstein.com
are truly special.” He captures all the traditional imagery that parents want, but in addition his portfolio is full of photographs that have a different angle, or a different point of view, that tell an evocative story about that day in a particular family’s life. He’s captured memories for over 500 area families.

(L-R) Drs. Vanna and Linda Stone
D
rs. Linda Stone and Vanna Stone, who share a mother-daughter family and cosmetic dentistry practice in town, pull off a magic trick every day. With the aid of what they call their “wand,” they make the pain and anxiety associated with a trip to the dentist disappear. The wand is actually a fine-gauge needle. Using computer technology, it delivers a syringe-free injection so slowly that it works below a patient’s pain threshold. In addition, notes Dr. Linda, “The wand allows us to anesthetize one tooth at a time, which means no more swollen lips.”
“We treat patients the way we would want to be treated. That means answering as many questions as they have, and do not start treatment until they are absolutely comfortable.” The wand is just one example of the ways the pair seeks to make patients comfortable. Dr. Linda says, “We treat patients the way we would want to be treated. That means answering as many questions as they have, and do not start treatment until they are absolutely comfortable.” Dr. Linda Stone with patient Ruth Barber
A visit to the Drs. Stone is even entertaining: The office streams Netflix and provides 3-D glasses for better viewing. Dr. Vanna explains, “The patient can remove themselves from the clinical surroundings; the program blocks out the sound of the drill or other instruments we might be using.” The in-office entertainment is clearly a big hit: patients have asked to stay in the chair after their procedure is done, so that they can watch the end of their show. The Stones’ practice also has seven intraoral cameras, which resemble thin sticks. The camera can be placed in the patient’s mouth and take pictures while the dentist is working. The images give the dentist, and the patient, real-time information about how his or her procedure is going. In addition to regular dental patients, the practice has seen a growing number of sleep apnea sufferers. Dr. Linda explains, “We can create an appliance that is much less invasive than the traditional CPAP machine. A ‘snore-guard’ opens the airway in the back of the throat by bringing the lower jaw forward. Locking the jaw into place prevents snoring.” Both Drs. Stone love what they do; their warmth sets the tone for a positive dental experience.

“The UnDentist” Robert Bagoff, DMD By Cynthia Burns
R
obert Bagoff, DMD calls himself “The Undentist.” “Dentistry doesn’t have to be painful nor horrifying,” he says. His goal is to take the fear out of going to the dentist. He credits technological advances for making treatments less painful.
Dr. Bagoff and his colleague, Ilan Gamburg, DMD, treat children and adults, including people who are medically compromised. The practice offers sedation dentistry, implants, teeth whitening, cleanings, fillings and Invisalign® braces. “We explain treatment options and show patients the results of diagnostic tests.” The focus is on patients’ overall health. Dr. Bagoff began his career at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was trained to care for the entire patient, not just the mouth. He conducts careful screenings to detect oral cancers and other health issues that
first manifest in the mouth. When there is a concern, he or Dr. Gamburg speak to a patient’s primary care doctor. Dr. Bagoff launched an implant education day for general practice dental residents at NYU College of Dentistry and teaches computerguided implant dentistry there. As an instructor, Dr. Bagoff gains hands-on experience in the latest technologies and evaluates which modalities are beneficial to his patients. Dr. Bagoff completed more than 2,000 hours of continuing education and is a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. He also attained diplomat status in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Providing a comfortable experience is of paramount importance. The practice has a concierge service and

Every Dog Has its Day at Pups@Play Doggie Daycare & Boarding By Jessica Schiffenhaus, photography by Dan Epstein

any pet owners struggle with leaving their pooches home alone all day, or boarded up in a kennel while they are on vacation. Happily, for pet owners in the Livingston area, Pups@Play has been providing dogs with a loving home-away-from-home for nearly five years.
“The places that were around were more institutionalized. I wanted to build something that was warm and fuzzy.” Designed for friendly, social pups, the 3,500-square-foot multi-playroom facility has tons of room for exercise and socialization. Three of the main services offered are doggie daycare, boarding and grooming—all are fully supervised, 24/7. The pups that stay overnight sleep together in beds and are given blankets to provide a comforting environment. Pups@Play is a convenient, one-stop destination for clients. Lori Zimmerman, the owner, opened Pups@Play after realizing there weren’t any places she felt comfortable leaving Oscar (one of her four pups) every day while she went to work. “The places that were around were more institutionalized. I wanted to build something that was warm and fuzzy.” Even the murals on the walls are playful, with park scenes and a faux-living room theme in one of the playrooms.
Lori Zimmerman
To ensure the comfort of all dogs at Pups@Play—aside from belly rubs, walks, and playtime—each one has a testrun prior to spending full days at the facility. A trained staff member will introduce the new dog to the group slowly (only a dog at a time). “We see how they react, what their body language looks like, to make sure the dog is not aggressive or completely stressed out—because that’s not good for the dog,” said Zimmerman, who genuinely wants every dog in the building to be happy, as does her staff. “I have amazing staff. They truly, truly, truly love the dogs. And you can tell,” said Zimmerman. “The way we do what we do is much more hands-on and has a very personal touch. I think that’s what separates us from the rest, and it’s what we built our reputation on.”

Regal Bank The New Face of Banking By Nancy Crutchfield, photo by Dan Epstein
D
an Tower remembers a time early in his career when people came to banks to cash paychecks. On a typical Friday morning, Dan and the other tellers were poised at five minutes past noon. The doors opened and dozens of people from the local businesses rushed through the doors. These days no one skips lunch to go to the bank.
What brings people into the bank these days? For one thing, there is a no-fee coin machine and gourmet coffee to enjoy in a comfortable atmosphere. The personal service is efficient and friendly. Chief Operating Officer Dan Tower points out new product rollouts as well as product upgrades such as the already convenient remote deposit system.
Regal Bank was started in 2007 and in April of this year acquired Community First Bank. Regal Bank is now the surviving institution with nine local branches. Regal Bank offers a variety of electronic and on-line services to allow customers to bank when it is convenient. Online banking, bill pay and remote deposit are some of the ways Regal Bank makes life easier.
Tower thinks the future of banking goes back to building relationships and reaching out to the community. For the past eight years, Regal Bank has hosted the Livingston Summer Concert series and other local and charitable events. Everyone was up and dancing in August to the popular B-Street Band at the Springfield branch. Bank employees are encouraged to attend events with their families to be part of the community. The Band Plays On: Aspiring Musicians Hone Their Talents at Andy’s Family Music Center By Cynthia Burns, photography by Dan Epstein
A
spiring musicians experience an artist’s life when they take instrument or voice lessons at Andy’s Family Music Center. The Center offers training on all musical instruments. Lessons are offered in 15 fully equipped music studio. Children, grouped by age, ability and an audition, can join an ensemble rock, jazz, pop or funk band. They perform concerts at area venues. Adult students are also a mainstay. “Some had music lessons as children and want to return to it, or it’s something they’ve not yet tried,” explains owner Joe Vitello. Vitello, a professional drummer and instructor who has backed up The Association and was a member of the B street Band, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band, draws from his experience to foster musical passion in his students. The bond between instructor and student is “our niche in the music lesson business,” he says. With more than 20 full- and part-time instructors who share Vitello’s passion, Andy’s Family Music Center instructs 450 students each week. “Learning the gift of music helps shape the value of a person’s life,” says Vitello.

Color Inspired Interior Design Custom Paint Colors & Wall Coverings For Your Home
S
tudio C is the inspiration of NJ Certified Interior Designer Carol Gambale. The color palette is the single most important element to her designs. It sets the stage for a space and announces it’s mood. She designs a palette based upon your personality and interests. It can be inspired by nature, the built environment, memory and emotion. The palette encompasses paint, fabrics, flooring and all other materials in relation to each other and how they are perceived in the light of your room. For example, a blue painted wall may look pale blue in sunlight, greenish blue next to a green sofa in room lighting during the day, and slate blue in room lighting at night. “This phenomenon is called metamerism”, she says,“I’ve studied this concept to understand how colors change in different light, how colors relate to one and other and how individual people perceive colors differently.”

She will come bearing color palettes in the space where they’ll be used. Her clients truly understand and delight in the outcome of this exercise after they experience the beauty of their completed room. They especially appreciate the harmony of the palette and love how the mood of the space changes from day to night.

The 10 Qualities That Make a Great Real Estate Agent HONESTY
The decision to buy or sell a home isn’t just a financial decision—it’s an emotional one as well. You should feel comfortable that the agent who is guiding you through this sometimes stressful process is honestly representing your best interests. From advice on pricing your home to recommendations on what repairs need to be done to sell it quickly, you should feel that the agent always has your back and your best interests in mind.
RESPONSIVENESS
A good agent will keep you informed and up-to-date through every step of your real estate experience. They should be in touch in the way you prefer, via voice, email or text message. Don’t be afraid to state your preferences. You should expect emails and voice mails returned in a timely manner.
KNOWLEDGE
Expect to receive professional advice from your agent. They are required to pass an exam and to continue their education to keep current. They should be able to advise you on any potential problems that can arise with a house you are selling or considering buying.
LOCAL EXPERTISE
Cambiz Smaily “Cam” Interest Rates Remain Low
A good agent will know all about the inventory of homes for sale in your neighborhood, how long they have been on the market and what sold recently— above or below the asking price. They should have experience in selling homes like yours. This local knowledge should extend to information about the community.
Slow growth in China and the Brexit vote in the U.K. have played a major role in driving down mortgage rates according to Freddie Mac’s recently released monthly Outlook for July. In the most recent Primary Mortgage Market Survey, the 30-year-fixed-rate mortgage fell to 3.41 percent, just slightly above the all-time record low. This is likely to result in a boost in housing activity, particularly in refinancing, as homeowners take advantage of the current low rates. More details can be found at www.Freddiemac.com/finance. 34

MARKETING SKILLS
The best agents will tell you who the potential customer is for your home and how they intend to find them. They should know how to create a marketing campaign for your home in traditional ways (print, direct mail, open houses) and also via online real estate websites, social media and virtual tours. They should know how to photograph your house to highlight its best features.
ORGANIZATION SKILLS
A successful real estate transaction depends upon timely communication and keeping on schedule. You should expect that your agent will work the timeline and keep everything running smoothly. They should make sure appointments are scheduled and honored and all necessary paperwork is in order, signed and delivered.
The Livingston Real Estate Market– ABSORTION RATE
What’s the absorption rate in Livington, and why is it important to you? In the simplest terms, the absorption rate is a measurement of how many months it would take to sell all the homes that are for sale in the market. A steady absorption rate is sure sign of a healthy real estate market. Below is a chart of Livingston showing the inventory of homes coming on and off market. Livingston Single Family Homes May 2016, June 201, July 2016
NEGOTIATING SKILLS
Negotiating is an art. Your agent should be a tough, tenacious negotiator tempered with the necessary people skills to keep agreements win-win for all parties.
NETWORK
Good agents develop a network of local connections that they have done business with in the past—movers, contractors, mortgage brokers, attorneys. They should be able to supply you with recommendations.
HARDWORKING
Good agents always go the extra mile. They follow up with feedback every time your house is shown. They will search the MLS for the sales history of the house you want to see. They will keep working until they find the right buyer for your home or the perfect home for you. Thomas Edison said it, and it’s still true, “There is no substitute for hard work.”
PASSION
Real estate should be your agent’s passion, not just a part-time paycheck. They should love the process, love the deal making and love putting together the right buyer and seller. It’s the real deal that makes all the other real estate deals possible.
Real Estate is My Passion! I am an experienced real estate agent with an excellent tract record of finding my clients the perfect home, or finding them qualified buyers for their house. Please feel free to contact me for a current competitive market analysis.

eacher Estelle Finkel started the Estelle Finkel Center for Learning (EFCL) from her kitchen table in 1984, says Amanda Patrick, EFCL’s current co-owner and educational director, “and it grew exponentially, into what is now a full-service learning center.” EFCL provides SAT/ACT test prep, tutoring for elementary through high-school age students, diagnostic testing and college advising. “All our services are tailored to the family and the student,” says Patrick. “It is not cookie cutter. Through interviews, we get a full picture of the student and their needs, which often involve areas beyond simply academic.” The educational background and professional expertise of EFCL’s staff are what set it apart, she says. EFCL is part of the Horizons in Learning organization, which also includes SEE Camp (summer enrichment), the Gifted and Talented Institute (Saturday programs), and after-school enrichment through public schools. Fall SAT/ ACT classes are now enrolling.

ich Fusco’s guitar students in his Studio of Music range in age from 7 to 78, and they learn everything from rock, jazz, classical, slide, and finger-picking techniques to music theory, music history, and ear training. The students have two things in common, says Fusco—they love music, and music is enhancing their enjoyment of life. “I have corporate executives who experience enormous stress relief; I have kids who do better in school than their non-musical peers,” says Fusco. But it is sheer love of music that informs Fusco’s teaching methods, a combination, he says, of “the streets and university music school.” A professional musician, he is also an adjunct professor of music at the Gallatin Division of NYU. For electric guitar students, Fusco also teaches amplifier maintenance and troubleshooting and pedalboard design. He works six days a week, but says, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Choice Pet Offers Healthy Products for the Well-Being of Pets & Value to Owners By Cynthia Burns, photography by Dan Epstein
C
hoice Pet is more than a pet food and supply store. The store’s marketing strategy is straightforward: offer the best products for the health and well-being of pets and to offer customers guidance and information. They carry products for dogs, cats, reptiles, fish, small animals and wild and domestic birds. Name-brand pet foods are available as are carefully selected holistic, organic, raw and natural foods. “We strive to offer the best and healthiest foods, while providing value to customers,” notes Bill Dellipoali, Director of Purchasing. “Our products go above and beyond quality control.” Choice Pet also carries treats, chews and an array of pet products. Above and beyond applies to the sales staff, too. At Choice Pet, sales associates demonstrate a love of animals and complete a certificate program to learn about all aspects of pet care. “Our staff is dedicated to helping you make the most informed choices for your pet,” says Dellipoali. Choice Pet routinely offers exclusive deals and online coupons. Customers can save on food by joining the Frequent Buyer Plan. At Choice Pet, the focus is on developing relationships between pet owners and their pets. As a trusted source of knowledge, Dellipoali assures customers that the company will continue to find the newest, best and most innovative merchandise available.

Wine Legend
A Special Neighborhood Store Photography by Dan Epstein
S
ince Wine Legend opened in Livingston in 2002, it has developed a strong reputation as a special neighborhood store; Wine Legend is not a liquor supermarket. It is a personal service store with a huge but carefully selected inventory based on community interests. Wine Legend understands that prices matter and offers its customers best pricing. Wine Legend respects that people are becoming much more savvy about wine, spirits and beer and realizes that the wine-drinking public is now open to trying new products more than ever before. Wine and spirits are wide-ranged, fun and great for conversation. Excited by a curious wine-buying community, the store’s knowledgeable buyers carefully select high-end wines as well as excellent everyday wines in the $10-15 range. Wines from California, Oregon and Washington State are popular, followed by the classics from Italy and France. The store also carries shiraz from Australia, fruity sauvignon blanc from New Zealand, malbec, carmenere and cabernet sauvignon from Chile and Argentina, dry or sweet white wines from Germany and Austria and a selection from the rising vineyards of South Africa. Wine Legend has developed a special selection of kosher wines with the kind cooperation of the neighbors who have suggested their favorites. The organic shelf continues to grow as more quality organic wines become available and customers request their preferences. The store is well-known for its large selection of beers from the national breweries as well as microbrews and seasonally changing craft beers. The spirits offered by Wine Legend range from the mass produced to the specialty vodkas and gins, classic scotches, and craft bourbons.

A very special feature, only at the West Orange store, is the Wine and Spirits bar. Here, special sizes of premium wines and spirits by the glass are offered. Most of these wines are not seen in a bar or better prices. For now the bar offers only a cheese and charcuterie plate. They expect to be working with a local chef to bring TAPAS to the bar by fall. Wine Legend stands far above the liquor supermarkets because it focuses on its community of customers. Knowledgeable employees greet patrons with smiles. The store is known to have the best prices in NJ on its incredible selection. Wine Legend truly cares about its clientele. There is “something for everyone” at both the Livingston and West Orange locations. Caring and attentive service, unbeatable prices, amazing selection—Wine Legend is a neighborhood store that knows how to make you feel special. Fall 2016

Lithos Estiatorio Brilliance & Simplicity By Christine S. Maxwell
I
n his famous speech “Acres of Diamonds”, Russell Conwell states that we often find the best opportunities in our own backyards. Area residents have encountered a “diamond” in Lithos Estiatorio in Livingston! Lithos Estiatorio was founded by Christos Karnessis whose dream is to offer the finest in Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. As its crowning jewel, Lithos offers a central display of exotic fish preserved on a bed of crushed ice. Among the delectable choices are pink snapper, black sea bass, bronzino and royal dorado flown in twice a week from Greece. Other fish, all from sustainable vendors, complete the assortment. Diners may choose the size and type of fish, which are then grilled and seasoned for the customers’ ultimate dining experience. Besides the grilled fish, Lithos dazzles and delights with an extensive menu of appetizers, entrees and desserts. Client favorites include grilled octopus as appetizer; lamb shank as entrée; and as desserts, baklava, a filo pastry accentuated with nuts and honey, and galaktoboureko, a custard in a filo pastry infused with Thyme and honey syrup. Sunday’s menu is a feast to behold! Brunch and dinner are served all day making Sunday a popular day to visit Lithos!
