Whether You Have a Lot or a Little to Lose, MediWeightloss® Can Help

LIVINGSTON GYMNASTICS at The Little Gym

Ages 4 Months - 12 Years

T

he Medi-Weightloss® Program has helped over 200,000 people lose more than 3 million pounds in the last 11 years. This physician-supervised, individualized weight loss program offers support, counseling, and accountability. It is known as The One That Works!® for a reason: Patients compliant with the program lost 6.4 pounds the first week and 14 pounds the first month*. At first, Livingston patient Roben Dunkin, was a little hesitant about joining Medi-Weightloss. “I had tried countless diets to lose weight. I would lose one or two pounds but I would quickly gain it back, sometimes even more. Then, one day I saw an old friend and I could not believe how great she looked—slim, healthy, and happy. I asked her for her secret and she said she had lost the weight with Medi-Weightloss. She said the program was easy and that she has been keeping the weight off for over two years now.” Dunkin decided to give Medi-Weightloss a try. “I knew if I did not take care of myself, I would not be there to take care of my family. The staff at Medi-Weightloss Livingston have been kind and welcoming. Since I have started my weight loss journey, I am proud to say I have lost over 40 pounds. My blood pressure has lowered, I have lost four dress sizes, and I feel like a new person,” says Roben. “The Medi-Weightloss team has continually worked with me to customize the program to maximize my success; I know they truly care about me as an individual.” *On average, patients compliant with the MediWeightloss® Program lose 6.4 pounds the first week and 14 pounds the first month. Rapid weight loss may be associated with certain medical conditions and should only be considered by those who are medically appropriate. © 2016 Medi IP, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

L

ivingston Tire Company is a family-owned business that has been assisting Essex County with its tire purchases and automobile repair needs for 87 years. Their mission is to provide honest, professional service at a fair price. The company’s founder, Mike Kirwan’s late father, believed that when you ‘treat people like family, they will come back.’ “That focus has been the bedrock of our business since 1929,” he states. The company is committed to providing their customers with a wide variety of products that fit all needs and budgets. They sell all major brands of tires, and have more than 1,200 tires in stock and thousands more available on short notice. We put our years of experience and knowledge to work helping each customer make the choice that is right for them, and we price our tires fully-installed, so you will never encounter a “mystery charge” after purchasing. They also believe that repairing or replacing a tire should not get in the way of your day— most work is done in less than an hour. Beyond tires, they are the only AAA-approved repair facility in Livingston, and have continually passed their evaluations and maintained the high standards that they set. Their staff and technicians have built upon their expertise over years, producing a combination of experience and training that is hard to find elsewhere. They service most makes and models, often at prices far below what dealers charge, and they pride themselves on never doing a repair that isn’t necessary. At Livingston Tire Company, they are committed to getting to know their customers, their cars and any particular needs of the client. Kirwan states, “We are in the business of making customers for life, and we would love to add you to our family.”

Telling Each Family’s Story Photo by Dan Epstein

“I

’m all about telling stories with photographs,” says photographer Dan Epstein. “For a couple of decades, I shot stories for major news magazines, and that’s where I honed my skills. In the Mid-Nineties, I became fascinated with all kinds of family life-cycle events, and that’s how I came to working with families documenting the celebrations around Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.” And do that he has. By his count he’s captured images for over 500 local families. His religious portrait sessions are beautifully lit, and deeply moving, evoking the rich spirituality of the service. The images he captures at the actual celebration go way beyond the obvious photographs usually made at parties. You can see searches for a deeper truth: not just what did it all look like, but what did it actually feel like to part of that family on that day. So much so that he says: “strangers I’ve shown sample albums to get caught up in the story of another family they’ve never met.”

If you’re interested in having your family’s story told in a very special way and likewise creating an album that’s sure to become a family heirloom for generations… reach out to him. His calendar still has openings in 2017.

Dan Epstein Photography www.danepstein.com

And of course, if you simply want a very special family portrait, his portfolio is likewise worth a look. You can see samples of his work on his website: www.danepstein.com.

W

hen close friends suffered a great loss, realtor Ellen Gonik of Coldwell Bankers in Livingston decided she would take action. Her friends, the Warters, recently lost their husband and father, Oren, who had been battling AML (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia). During this time, friends of the family created Warter Strong, a drive dedicated to adding people to the Gift of Life bone marrow and stem cell collection registry. Water Strong also raises money to process kits used for the registry. In just one day, the organization collected nearly 600 samples of potential stem cell donors and raised nearly $50,000. Despite Oren’s passing, the organization continues as a wonderful way to help others in need of transplants to be matched with bone marrow and stem cell donors. The registration kit is simple—a swab of cheek cells is all that is needed. Every dollar raised goes to Gift of Life to add donors to the registry. To aid in the continued success of Warter Strong and Gift of Life, Gonik has put up a billboard on W. Mt. Pleasant Avenue in Livingston. Her goal is to encourage people to spread awareness through social media and join her in donating to the cause. Gonik asks people to share photos of the billboard using the hashtag #Warterstrong. To donate, learn more about the registry or to request a collection kit to sign up for the registry, please visit gol.org/warterstrong. And share your experience on social media with #WarterStrong to help the awareness campaign.

Celebrating 100 Years Crystal Plaza Announces New Ventures By Jessica Schiffenhaus

A

n elegant space with endless possibilities, Crystal Plaza is a premier venue for weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs and corporate events. Owned and operated for nearly 100 years by the Janoff family, the business prides itself on creativity, attention-to-detail, staying on top of trends—and setting them. “We never do the same event twice,” said Max Janoff, managing partner and fourth generation Janoff.

Inside Livingston

Winter 2016

The venue is a beautifully restored turn-of-thecentury mansion with stunning glasswork, a grand staircase and other timeless features. It features several spaces, including a grand ballroom which has a 45-foot ceiling, crystal chandeliers and a 30foot dance floor; an upstairs salon used for smaller parties and ceremonies; a living room, library and patio for cocktail hour plus an outdoor garden space. Continued on page 20

Allan Janoff with sons Max and Hunter Photo by Dan Epstein

Crystal Plaza Announces New Ventures Continued from page 18 “There is only one affair at a time, no matter the size of the party,” assured Janoff. At Crystal Plaza, clients are encouraged to customize their event—especially when it comes to food. “We love to do things that we haven’t done yet,” said Janoff. Some trends of late include a Prohibition Bar, with craft beers, bourbons, scotches and speakeasy décor; a Sake Sushi Bar with sushi and sake pairings; and the Dim Sum Station, which is a table suspended from the ceiling with different types of dumplings. Ice sculptures are carved in-house and can make exciting cocktail hour stations, such as tequila and martini ice bars. They’ve even created a 12-foot sailboat made of ice to serve shrimp. The venue maintains three kitchens: non-kosher, kosher and glatt kosher.

In January 2017, Crystal Plaza is expanding to celebrate its 100th anniversary. “There is really high demand for high-end and elegant, yet fun and trendy catering in unique spaces,” said Janoff. With the anniversary comes a new addition, Crystal Plaza Group, that will consist of different off-premise catering divisions. Crystal Plaza the venue will remain the same—on-site catering and events. There will be a New York—CPNY and NJ division— CPNJ, with a focus on hotels and unique spaces but also branch out to other event locations, such as barn or tent weddings.. “We will work with venues that resemble quality and elegance our clients have come to expect from us,” said Janoff. Crystal Plaza Group will feature three different catering divisions: Highview—non-kosher; Crystal—kosher and Alpine—glatt kosher. Additionally, Skyview will be the airplane and aviation catering division. This group has the rights to airplane hangars, allowing for unique, upscale affairs. And finally, to make it all come together, the The Group introduces CP Productions, which provides event coordination and planning. This division will help clients with every step of the planning process. No matter what kind of party or ceremony, the Crystal Plaza Group has a beautiful solution.

A

t 42 years old, The Early School of Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston is a well-established preschool. It is also, in the words of Director Debbie Aronson Ziering, a family. Ziering explains, “All of the children know all of the teachers, and they all know me.”

The Early School enrolls students age two to five (it also has parent-and-child programs for those younger than two). The youngest students, the Early 2’s, attend school two mornings a week, with hours and days increasing each year. The K-Readys, age four and five, attend five days a week, with different pick-up time options. Beforeand after-care is available for all ages. The afternoon program features enrichment activities such as sports, dance, tumbling, and Tae Kwando. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) is part of the daily curriculum. Because children, and their parents, expect technology to be a regularpart of their lives, The Early School has a technology center, featuring a SMART Table® Aronson Ziering explains, “This is a big flat screen on a tabletop that includes learning applications which enable groups of students to work on solving a problem. As they do so, they are learning to collaborate as well as strengthening their counting or prereading skills.” She adds, “Because everything we do is cooperative, our curriculum blends the intellectual and the emotional sides of a child. Whether our children are pre-reading, coloring, or engaged in imaginative play, they are also learning sharing, negotiating, and coping skills.” As a synagogue-affiliated preschool, The Early School incorporates Judaism into its curriculum—all Jewish holidays are celebrated, and the cantor leads a weekly music program with all of the classes. The teachers and Aronson Ziering lead the Friday Shabbat program. Debbie concludes, “This school really mixes fun and academics with warmth and nurturing. It’s a stress-free environment that allows children to really be children.”

How to Increase Your Home’s Value The Livingston Real Estate Absorption Rate What’s the absorption rate in Livington, and why is it important to you? In the simplest terms, the absorption rate is a measurement of how many months it would take to sell all the homes that are for sale in the market. A steady absorption rate is sure sign of a healthy real estate market. Below is a chart of Livingston showing the inventory of homes coming on and off the market.

t is natural to want to show your home in its best light when it is time to put it on the market. But settling on the right home improvements can be difficult. If you over-improve, you are just wasting money. If you under-improve, your home may not attract the attention it deserves.

✓ Make major landscape improvements. A study by Money Magazine found that well-planned and attractive landscaping had a recovery rate 100 to 200 percent higher than a kitchen or bathroom renovation. If you are planning a larger project, here is the national average of costs recouped when the house sold, according to Realtor Magazine. • Minor kitchen remodel (88%)

“Warmest wishes for the Holiday Season and a bright, peaceful, prosperous New Year.” —Cam Smaily • Master suite (75%) • Attic bedroom (74%) • Siding replacement (73%) • Window replacement (69%)

DON’T:

✓ Go cheap. Use quality materials and if you can’t do the work yourself, have it performed by skilled craftsman. ✓ Don’t switch styles. Make sure additions and improvements match the rest of the home. ✓ Turn a bedroom into a bathroom. Bedrooms are often a home’s main selling point. ✓ Over improve. Don’t put in a state of the art kitchen if you’re going to be selling your home soon. ✓ Add improvements that have little WOW factor: aboveground pool, ceiling fans, and garden ponds.

Think about how and where to put your remodeling budget before you put your house on the market. Homes in Livingston that are market ready aren’t staying on the market very long. Check out the chart to see what homes in Livingston recently sold above the asking price. I can give you the professional advice on what you need to do to get your home market ready.

Helping Women to Get in Tip Top Shape is the Goal of This Fitness Studio By Katrina Musto, photo by Dan Epstein

G

et In Shape for Women, Livingston, is a fitness studio for women that offers small group personal training sessions, interval cardio training on cardio equipment, nutrition counseling, and accountability to ensure the success of its clients. Up to four women share the studio floor at a time, but all are given individualized programs based on their different goals, abilities, and limitations.

Helping women who feel helpless in their weight loss battles, the staff works with clients to gain strength with a nondiet based approach to food and holds them accountable to their goals. They have watched clients learn how to move better and make their lives easier, as well as transform from non-exercisers to athletes. “Most of our clients have never envisioned themselves going to the gym or keeping up with an exercise program, and yet they are thrilled to spend time with the trainers and each other, all while tackling new challenges,” explains Kristen Welfel, trainer and assistant manager. With a fast-paced vibe and positive energy, clients work to their full potential, but have fun while they’re training, eliminating any intimidation factor. Welfel personally enjoys watching clients become stronger, braver and more confident versions of themselves.

Get In Shape For Women 521 S. Livingston Avenue, Livingston | 973-992-3630 www.getinshapeforwomen.com “We think of our clients like family,” says studio manager, Susan Labunski. “Our experience has shown us that when people feel connected they are more likely to be successful in anything. Watching women become empowered by transforming their bodies is the most gratifying part. It’s why we are here.”

The gift is called an IRA Charitable Rollover, and thanks to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015, the amount you transfer may satisfy your entire RMD and is TAX-FREE (yes, it comes from an IRA and it is excluded from taxable income). Meeting the Diversified Needs of Both Business and Personal Travelers By Susan Wilinski, photo by Dan Epstein

S

ince 1976, Travel 15 in Roseland has been providing both personal and business clients with a full range of services to meet the needs of travelers. Supported by her team of professionals, owner Carole Williams has built an agency dedicated to giving clients the perfect travel experience. “We are full service and handle all aspects of travel whether business or personal,” Williams states. “We specialize in the personal concierge type of services, but also offer online booking for those business travelers that prefer to do it themselves. So whether a client requires a simple roundtrip ticket to Miami or a complex detailed private journey, we can provide whatever options are available to give a memorable experience.” With a staff of close to 40, the consultants at Travel 15 are evenly distributed between business and personal clients and are focused solely on their own type of travel requirements. As experts, Williams explained that there is no crossover of consultants, but that many business clients have returned to Travel 15 for their personal travel needs. “The consultant that works with our corporate accounts is not the same agent that would take care of the personal traveler,” she explained. “Each consultant has his or her own specialty. I feel it is important to be diversified in business today. Our corporate clients have trust with their business travel and put that same trust in us for their personal travel.”

Transforming Fat Cells in a Cool Manner with Dr. Shari Sperling By Katrina Musto

E

veryone is consumed with work and family, so who has time for lengthy cosmetic procedures? At Sperling Dermotology, Dr. Shari Sperling offers a solution to that question. She offers Coolsculpting, a body sculpting procedure that freezes fat cells without damaging surrounding cells and permanently kills fat cells. The non-invasive procedure has no downtime and is performed right in her office. Dr. Sperling speaks highly of how stress-free it is. “It takes 35 minutes per area, and patients can watch television, scroll through their iPad or even nap while doing it. It’s good for love handles, under the chin, thighs, buttocks, and abdominal fat,” she explains. The FDA-approved fat-reducing procedure, which promises no needles or anesthesia, begins with a preliminary consultation at Dr. Sperling’s office to discuss the best treatment plan and to determine how many treatments will be necessary to transfer the desired sculpted shape. During the treatment, a gel pad and applicator is applied to the targeted area, followed by the CoolSculpting applicator delivering controlled cooling to the targeted fat.

Porto by Antonio NO PASSPORT NEEDED!

R

ustic pizza. Freshly-made mozzarella. Handmade pastas. Organic vegetables. Add in a dash of upscale-casual atmosphere and attentive service, and the result is Livingston’s own Porto by Antonio. Chef and co-owner Antonio Dinis has turned his ten-year quest for the perfect pizza and all things Italian into the newest go-to spot in Livingston. Situated on the former Cosi real estate on Route 10 East, Porto exudes Old World charm. And swoon-worthy pizzas. In 2006, Dinis was introduced to the oldest art of pizzamaking, the Neapolitan wood-burning pizza. Since then, he traveled through all areas of Italy to hone his craft. Returning back home, Dinis opened his first restaurant in North Bergen, which garnered so much attention that his second eatery in Livingston opened just 18 months later, in June 2016.

Porto by Antonio 471 West Mount Pleasant Avenue, Livingston 973-486-6987 | www.PortoByAntonio.com Closed Mondays. BYOB, but with a wine selection

Porto’s menu is filled with pizza, but the “traditional” red sauced one is just the stepping off point. An entire section of choices is dedicated to “Pizze Bianche”—pizzas without tomato sauce. In addition, Pizze Fritte, or fried pizzas, certainly may catch the eye. Of note is La Montanara (described as a 100-year old pizza) that has lightly fried pizza dough and is finished in the wood-burning oven. Italian meats, cheeses and vegetables can be added in order to personalize the dining experience. Diners rave about Porto’s pizzas, describing the crust as “rustic but not too thin.” One patron posted, “If you like that real Italian style personal type of pizza with super fresh ingredients then I highly recommend trying this place.” However, pizza is not just for the main meal. At Porto’s, creative dessert pizzas earn high praise, especially the decadent Nutella Pizza. Not in the mood for pizza of any variety? Try the Italian meat and cheese appetizer, kale salad or pasta entrees. So, when Italy beckons but the private jet is out for service, go to Porto.

Porto by Antiono’s parent company, The Gomes Group, has a mission that is is to—“Delight guests by providing an experience that creates repeat business.” www.gomesgroupllc.com Winter 2016

Master Pizza

Bringing Italian Traditions to Livingston for Almost 27 Years By Susan Wilinski, photography by Dan Epstein

A

t Master Pizza in Livingston, the art of pizza making has indeed been mastered by owner Frank Castronovo. Growing up, he lived and learned everything about creating a perfect pie and running a business from his own father, who started the family tradition of restaurant ownership in America. For almost 27 years, Castronovo has been sharing family recipes and hospitality, bringing a little bit of Italy to New Jersey residents. “Frank was raised in the pizza industry working at his dad’s pizzeria as a young boy, and worked alongside his brothers as the years went on,” said Castronovo’s wife, Marylee. “Master Pizza is his business venture.” While Master Pizza has garnered a reputation for its plain pizzas, the menu has expanded over the years to include items from salads, soups and appetizers to gourmet pizzas, calzones, strombolis and desserts. In addition to homemade soups, Castronovo offers pasta dishes, dinner entrees and lunch specials and a gluten-free pizza option to meet the needs of patrons with special dietary restrictions. “We have an extensive list of gourmet pizzas such as Quattro Formaggi (provolone and mozzarella cheese with a sauce that consists of heavy cream, parmesan and ricotta cheese and parsley), Meat Lovers, Las Vegas Pizza (sliced

potato, bacon, cheddar and mozzarella cheese with alfredo and gorgonzola sauce) and Barbecue Chicken. Our sizes range from a 10” pizzette to a 16” grande,” Marylee said. “Our most popular dinner dish would be the Chicken Sorrentino which is chicken cutlet topped with eggplant, prosciutto and melted mozzarella in a brown sauce.” With a modest front end counter for placing orders, Master Pizza has built its customer base on prompt and reliable takeout and delivery service. With the full menu available online, orders can be placed through the website, an app or by fax. Since opening the Livingston location in 1990, Castronovo has branched out, adding restaurants in West Orange and Union and plans are in motion to debut a fourth in Carlstadt in early 2017. To show their appreciation, Castronovo has supported these communities by donating pizzas to schools, teams and fundraisers. “Master Pizza loves to give back to the community. We feel that we definitely would not be here as long as we have if it weren’t for our loyal customers,” states Marylee.
