Letter from the Mayor
CCongratulations, Cathy and David Black, on another outstanding edition of Inside Livingston magazine. It is always super informative and beautifully produced. It’s been eight years since I penned the first Letter from the Mayor, and today, Inside Livingston magazine is better than ever! We are grateful the same can be said for the town of Livingston.
We continue to be a premier NJ town to live, work and shop. Our school system and town services are always top-notch, our business community has become even stronger, and our volunteers are second to none.
In the past year, we opened new restaurants, retail, and services which offer new exciting choices for all, including Creatif, Wonder, Livingston Portrait Studio, Excel Martial Arts, Sombrero Tacoria, VSA Learning Center, Ace Taekwondo, 4Ever Young, State Farm Insurance, Conti-Bediner Law Firm, Boardwalk Zeppole, Michele’s Dance Studio, J. Crew, LA Bikini, Mr. Tandoor, Vivi Bubble Tea, HotWorx, Bergen Pharmacy, Dance Extensions, Strategic Insurance, Core Weave, Shipping Logistics, and Dairy Queen, while still upcoming this Fall are Just Salad, Sugar Tree Cafe, Sleep Loft, Dance Cult, CARS, BlueRun, TopWiz Academy, with Lidl and Blu Livingston both slated to open before year’s end.
This month, we will award a contract to build a long-awaited new Department of Public Works building on Industrial Parkway. This will give our hard-working employees a new facility while exploring a better use of the former site on S. Livingston Ave. We also look forward to fun recreational opportunities at the 20 acres of Open Space we acquired on two beautiful tracts of land.
Livingston Township and its volunteers experienced one of their best summers ever. We had enormous attendance at some of our traditional events, such as a record-breaking 15,000 people at our Fourth of July celebration, which included exciting bands, a terrific car show, fireworks, lots of activities for kids, and a beer/wine garden.
Other fun and exciting events this year were Summerfest, Bike Livingston, Doggy Dip, Youth Appreciation Week, and summer concerts, with our famous Camuso holiday display coming up. We honor our veterans at numerous ceremonies and celebrate our diversity and inclusion with many cultural events and festivals year-round. We also celebrated several firsts this year with an inaugural Community Block Party, Peace Rally, and AAPI Picnic. I believe that we are getting things right in our corner of the world.
The future is extremely bright for both Inside Livingston magazine and Livingston Township, thanks to you, our dedicated community members. Your support and engagement make our town a vibrant and thriving place. Thank you so much, longtime Livingston residents Cathy and David Black, for sharing your talents and providing Livingston news.
Have a great Fall, everyone!

The UPS Store: A Family Business Providing Exceptional Mailing and Packaging Services
BY CHRISTINE MAXWELL
SStarting as a family affair, The UPS Store on S. Livingston Avenue, owned by Samir and Attiat (Touty) Helmy, has had mailing and packaging services for customers for over 20 years. They started their journey with a store in Cedar Grove and then expanded to three other locations with the assistance of their children, George and Joseph. Their children moved on to successful careers outside of the family business: George is now a New Jersey senator, and Joseph is the Executive Director of JP Morgan. After their children started other jobs, and when the pandemic profoundly affected their businesses, Samir and Touty consolidated and retained only the Livingston location, where they continue to offer the same strong customer service and convenience to area customers.
The Helmys provide many services to meet the needs of every customer. Primarily providing shipping, handling, and packaging of clients’ items, The UPS Store ensures that the items will arrive safely at the designated destinations. Other popular services include customer mailboxes, printing jobs, notarizing important documents, and being a convenient dropoff location for Amazon returns.
The UPS Store distinguishes itself from its competitors by going the extra mile for its customers. Having lived in the community for many years, the Helmys know many customers as neighbors and friends. Their personal connection with the customers is what sets them apart. “We treat everyone here at the store like family because they are part of our family business. With our long-standing history with the UPS store and our commitment to provide the best service possible, we promise that the customers’ needs are satisfied before they leave our store,” says Touty.
The UPS Store will soon undergo a fresh look with new equipment, furniture, and additional services, such as passport photos. With these upgrades, The UPS Store will continue to be a stand-out store for quality mailing needs in the community.

MASTER PIZZA: SERVING FRESH AND VARIED ITALIAN CUISINE
BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL
SSince 1990, Frank Castronovo has owned Master Pizza, a premier pizza and Italian cuisine restaurant in Livingston. Frank’s wife, Marylee, later joined the business, helping create successful and thriving local restaurants. With the flagship restaurant in Livingston, Master Pizza has expanded over the years to include three more locations in Union, West Orange, and Carlstadt. All four shops serve the same menu: pizzas galore, cold subs, and traditional Italian fare.
One of the secrets of Master Pizza’s success is keeping its menu fresh and varied, using only the finest ingredients. The pizza dough is prepared daily, and fresh Grande cheese tops the pizzas. Sauces are made daily with fresh tomatoes. Salads also utilize the freshest vegetables and ingredients. Customers can be assured that all orders are made to order with the freshest, finest, and quality ingredients.
The second secret is meeting the needs of their customers. Master Pizza takes pride in serving quality meals and reviving the dishes their customers know, love, and yearn for. Their extensive menu is a testament to this. Recently, the Castronovos conducted a year-long evaluation of their menu and returned some of their most beloved items that loyal patrons still requested. “Master Pizza is so pleased to bring back classic pizzas and dishes for our long-time customers and introduce fresh options to our new customers,” says Marylee.
For instance, the Germanario Pizza and the Las Vegas Pizza are now among many pizza choices. Similarly, some seafood dishes, such as Shrimp Napoli and Shrimp and Broccoli, have triumphantly returned. Popular pasta dishes like Pasta Primavera and Pasta Pomodoro are also back on the menu. The wonderful selection of Italian desserts, including the Cinna Knots, an original masterpiece of Master Pizza, is a terrific way to end a meal.
Master Pizza is open daily to serve its clients. As a primarily take-out restaurant, Master Pizza offers quick and convenient ways to order. Customers can order online, by text, or by phone for take-out or delivery.

BLENDING TRADITION with MODERN EXCELLENCE in Window Treatments and Awnings
BY CHRISTINE MAXWELL
FFiltering light through form, function, and aesthetics is the mission of Window Works, a premier window treatment and awning company. A family business established in 1982, Window Works has remained steadfast to its original mission of providing a variety of quality interior and exterior window treatments to residential and commercial properties within Northern New Jersey and the five New York boroughs.
The second generation of family members now operates the company. Their unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction is their driving force, and they work hard to achieve this goal. According to JC Rocha, owner and senior Awning and Window Treatment Specialist, Window Works is one of the few companies in the area that offers a three-year labor warranty on its products and installation, a testament to their dedication to their customers.
Customers may choose from various blinds, shades, and specialty drapes for the interior of their properties. For the outside of residences and businesses, Window Works provides the ultimate products for patio life and shade structures with a vast selection of exterior awnings and shades. “We view each home as our house. We realize your home is your biggest investment, and we are honored to work on it. We use the highest quality items according to your budget,” states Rocha.
Designers from Window Works collaborate directly with clients to make the appropriate choices for their properties. Outside businesses may also contract Window Works designers for solutions and custom designs.
At Window Works, an intergenerational company, customers also span different generations. “We have many customers from the second and third generations of the same families,” added Rocha. “The family members recognize our products’ timeless beauty and quality.”
Although Window Works offers many products that appeal to traditional clientele, it keeps abreast of modern products that maintain traditional excellence in form, function, and aesthetics. One such trend is cordless motorized window treatments and drapes, which provide additional safety measures for children and pets.
States Rocha, “Our business has been serving the area for 42 years. We live here. Our friends are our customers. Providing the best service to them is our number one concern.”

Enhance Your Home with Expert Landscape Lighting: Fall and Winter Preparation
As the days grow shorter with the approach of fall and winter, landscape lighting plays a key role in enhancing curb appeal, extending outdoor living, and improving security. Thoughtful landscape lighting design can transform a property, making it both beautiful and functional in the darker months.
To maximize curb appeal, focus on highlighting architectural features, plants, and pathways. Strategically placed lighting can accentuate your home’s façade while drawing attention to key landscaping elements, adding elegance and charm. For entertaining, gently illuminate patios, decks, and outdoor kitchens, creating a cozy atmosphere that allows family and friends to gather comfortably even as daylight fades earlier. A warm, subtle glow promotes relaxation and ensures the space is inviting.
When it comes to security, lighting around windows, doors, and other access points is critical. Properly positioned fixtures can deter potential intruders by eliminating dark hiding spots and improving visibility around the perimeter of the home.
For long-lasting, reliable installations, it is essential to use high-quality materials. Opt for durable brass or stainless-steel luminaires and energy-efficient LED sources to ensure your lighting withstands harsh winter conditions. LED technology offers longevity and consistent performance, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.
Additionally, ensure that all underground wiring and electrical components are installed according to national electrical standards for low-voltage lighting. Proper installation guarantees not only safety but also the long-term functionality of your system.
By investing in quality landscape lighting and proper installation techniques, you can extend the beauty and security of your home year-round, even as fall and winter set in.

OPTICIANS For Eyewear as Individual as You Are! TEST RITE
YYour roof is a critical home component, providing protection and security for you and your family. Over time, wear and tear can take its toll, and it’s essential to watch for signs that indicate it may be time for a replacement.
If you notice water stains on your ceiling or walls or signs of water damage in your attic, your roof may be compromised. If not addressed, leaks can lead to significant structural damage.
Look at your roof from the ground to see if any shingles are missing, curling or cracking, or damaged. These issues can leave your roof vulnerable to leaks and other damage. If you notice a droop or sag in your roof, it could indicate structural issues that must be addressed.
As roofs age, they can become less energy-efficient, allowing heat to escape during the winter and making your cooling system work harder in the summer. An increase in your energy bills could be a sign that your roof no longer provides adequate insulation.
While not necessarily a structural concern, moss, algae, or mold growths can trap moisture and cause shingles to deteriorate more quickly.
Over time, roofs can show visible signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, dents, or general deterioration. If your roof is exceeding its expected life expectancy, it’s likely time to consider a replacement as roofing materials have limited lifespan. If your roof looks worn out and past its prime, it should be inspected by a professional who can thoroughly assess your roof’s condition and determine if it’s time for a replacement.
An Easy and Affordable Way to Plan YOUR CHILD’S MITZVAH CELEBRATION
IIf you ask anyone that has planned a mitzvah celebration for their child, chances are you’ll hear it was stressful and expensive. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.
Sam & Melanie Pellegrino, owners of the Powerhouse Entertainment Group, have been helping plan successful celebrations for over 40 years and have come up with the answer to an easier and more affordable option.
After 15 years in the DJ Entertainment business, they opened their first of 3 party venues in East Hanover, NJ over 23 years ago in 2001. The Ultra Lounge @ Powerhouse Studios gives families an alternative to the traditional catering hall, country club or temple ballroom.
With the success of their East Hanover location and demand for their services growing, a few years later, in 2004, they opened their second location in Paramus, NJ called the Hollywood Ballroom @ Powerhouse Studios.
And finally in 2013, they opened their third location, Vegas NJ in Randolph, NJ. An upscale, event venue offering contemporary décor, vibrant nightclub atmosphere and delectable cuisine.
This year they have completely redesigned the Hollywood Ballroom in Paramus and turned it into a luxury, high-end event venue. Conveniently located only 30-minute drive from the Livingston Circle, it offers 18,000 square feet of event space with separate cocktail rooms for both kids and adults, an area to hold services, spacious dining room and large dance floor equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and sound. It even has a separate game room for the kids.
All of their locations offer all-inclusive packages that can include venue rental, entertainment, branding, décor, photography, video, photo favors and their phenomenal In-house catering. Kosher catering options are also available.

Find Your STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY at Club Pilates

Abigail Polizois, owner of Club Pilates Livingston, with a sister studio in Westfield, explains, "The beauty of Pilates lies in its adaptability. Whether you're an athlete looking to enhance performance, a new mother recovering from childbirth, or rehabilitating from an injury, Pilates can be tailored to meet your needs."
Who is Pilates For?
Pilates has broad appeal. At Club Pilates Livingston, clients range from teenagers to individuals in their 90s. The studio offers classes suitable for every fitness level, from introductory sessions for beginners to advanced classes that challenge even experienced practitioners.
Victoria Solomon, Instructor
How Pilates Helps
Pilates is renowned for its ability to build core strength, improve flexibility, and enhance posture. Its benefits extend beyond physical fitness, encouraging mindfulness and breath control, which can reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Because Pilates is low-impact, it’s particularly beneficial for those who need to avoid high-impact activities like running or weightlifting.
"Pilates is a great way to stay active without putting unnecessary strain on your joints," Abi explains. "It's perfect for people who want to maintain their fitness as they age. What you’re essentially doing is strategically creating a protective armor of muscle around the areas of your body most vulnerable to injury, for example your spine."
How Pilates Differs from Other Exercise Programs
Unlike many exercise programs that focus on rapid, highintensity movements, Pilates emphasizes slow, controlled movements that engage the body’s stabilizing muscles. This approach strengthens the body and helps prevent injuries by promoting better body mechanics and alignment.
"Pilates is unique in its focus on the smaller, often overlooked muscles that support the spine and joints," Abi says. "This makes it an excellent complement to other forms of exercise, as it helps build the foundational strength needed to avoid injury and recover faster."
Pilates is for Everyone
At Club Pilates, classes are limited to 12 participants, ensuring personalized attention from the highly trained instructors. The studio offers a variety of classes throughout the day, accommodating even the busiest of schedules. Club Pilates also offers flexible membership packages that are both affordable and tailored to fit different needs. With options like four-pack, eight-pack, and unlimited classes, members can choose a plan that suits their fitness goals and budget.
"We want people to know that Pilates is not just for the fit and flexible; it's for anyone looking to improve their health and well-being in a supportive, welcoming environment," Abi notes. “It can also be a wonderful compliment to other forms of sport.”

Mayor Al Anthony Receives ANJEC Award
MMayor Al Anthony was awarded the coveted Municipal Leadership Award at the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) 51st Annual Environmental Congress on Friday, September 27, 2024. ANJEC stated that Mayor Anthony received this award in recognition of his exceptional environmental leadership and his outstanding achievements in the environmental field.
Town council liaison to and 17-year member of the Livingston Environmental Commission (LEC), Mayor Anthony was the force behind the initiative to appoint high school student members to the LEC. The Mayor and members of the LEC study and make recommendations to the Township Council on issues relating to protecting, developing, or using the natural resources — including water resources and open space — located within the township. The LEC also reviews the potential environmental impacts of applications heard before the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment.
“Including these students has led to an influx of new ideas and initiatives, one of which will add an environmentally themed mural to the outside of a local business on Earth Day 2025 after conducting an EnviroArt contest this fall,” stated Mayor Anthony. “I’m proud and humbled to receive this award,” continued the Mayor. “Environmental issues affect all of us, our children and generations to come.”
KNEELING:
Professionally, Mayor Anthony serves as Special Counsel to the New Jersey Attorney General representing the Department of Environmental Protection prosecuting cases against polluters to recover compensation for statewide Natural Resources Damages. He also represents victims of environmental contamination injured from carcinogens throughout the state.

THE WAE CENTER
Where Dreams Are Pursued
IIf there are jewels in the crown of Livingston, certainly the WAE Center, a program of the JSDD is one of them. Founded in 2004, WAE, which stands for Wellness, Arts, and Enrichment is a holistic arts learning program for adults with developmental disabilities. According to director Harry Klein, they are “here to create a nonjudgmental space where people are invited to pursue their dreams and be their authentic selves.” Klein goes on to say that as director his journey has been about finding magic moments in every day occurrences, and feeding the soul in a profound way. Not just serving, but being served. That it’s a special place wherein everyone feels challenged, and experiences growth.
The space itself is remarkable. The building was designed by the staff and the board: the exterior is a sea of windows, so not only do the members inside feel like the outside is inside, but passersby can see in, and see what members are up to. What’s going on. Believing that Art is the universal way to communicate, the exceptional Art program here is run by teaching artist facilitators, from a neutral point of view, with a strong prevocational slant.
Courses like Painting, Drawing, Photography, Woodworking, Jewelry, Fiber Arts, Digital Art, and Culinary skills are offered, and centered around employability. During our visit, we were pleased to sit in on a Fiber Arts class led by art facilitator Yvette Lucas wherein members worked on projects using a variety of different looms. We were also fortunate to visit a Culinary class led by facilitator Elena Tedeschi during which members made a delicious raspberry sorbet, and pasta from scratch.
Another notable feature of the WAE Center is the Heidi Gallery, run by gallery manager Jeremy Moss. According to their website it’s “…an art venue dedicated to the practice and belief that creative endeavors enrich lives and communities. The gallery is focused on bringing people together to experience art and arts education while fostering a fully inclusive community.
The gallery is committed to showcasing the highest quality visual art created by established, emerging, and underrepresented artists.” In fact the exhibit that was on display during our visit was a noteworthy collection featuring work from professional artists from around the region, and definitely worth the trip for any Art lover. We’ll be going back to experience future exhibitions.

Quantum Wellness & Energy Healing
Indoor Gardening for Fun, Health & Sustainable Living
BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
TThe move toward more sustainable living has gained traction in recent years with people looking to help the environment and their wallets. Gardening is a great hobby to support a more sustainable lifestyle. It’s fun, saves money on groceries, and helps you feel accomplished by eating something you grew. It also promotes healthy living, cooking at home, and eating more nutritious foods. When you grow your own food at home, you also know exactly what’s in it and how it was produced.
Gardening can be difficult, especially outdoor gardening, because there are so many variables. This includes climate changes, unpredictable weather, and plants getting eaten by wildlife or pests. Indoor gardening allows you to grow veggies year-round in the comfort of your home, with a greater likelihood of success because you control the environment. This is also beneficial for those with little or no outdoor space to incorporate nature into their daily lives. Herbs, leafy plants, and microgreens are the most common edible plants for indoor growing. They generally do well with shallow soil because they’re smaller and don’t need as much space inside. They also don’t need as much sun and are easier to grow if you’re just starting out.
Growing plants indoors is good for your health in other ways too. Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and generate oxygen, making the air in your home cleaner. Exposure to nature and the accomplishment you feel from successfully starting a garden is also good for your mental health.

What exactly is the Energy Enhancement System (EES), and how does it work? A: The EES generates bio-active energy fields, including scalar waves, which re-energize and heal the body’s cells by boosting mitochondrial function. It’s non-invasive—you simply relax in our zero-gravity chairs and let the energy work its magic, leaving you refreshed.
Who can benefit from EES sessions? EES is beneficial for everyone—whether you’re young, old, athletic, sick, or healthy. It helps the body heal itself, making it ideal for managing stress, improving sleep, enhancing sports recovery, and boosting overall wellness. It’s also great for brain function, which is particularly helpful for students and those seeking a cognitive boost. Athletes see significant improvements in muscle recovery, circulation, and overall performance.
What should someone expect during a session? It’s simple— sit back, close your eyes, and let the energy flow. Sessions last around two hours, with packages available to suit various needs. Some people notice immediate improvements, while others may require a few sessions.

TURANO’S PIZZA
Elevating Livingston’s Pizza Game One Slice at a Time
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTIEN
TTurano’s Pizza Kitchen, owned by Dave Turano, has been a staple in Livingston for nearly six years, raising the bar for pizza and Italian dining in the area. With a diverse menu offering everything from classic pizzas to veal, seafood, and even steaks, Turano’s goes beyond the typical pizzeria fare. “I serve restaurant-quality food at pizzeria prices,” Dave explains.
One of Turano’s unique features is the ever-evolving menu. Dave constantly works on new ideas and adds exciting dishes to keep customers engaged. “Right now, I’m revamping the whole menu, adding many new items while downsizing some,” Dave shares. Turano’s introduces specials that highlight seasonal ingredients and creative dishes each month to keep things fresh. These monthly specials can be found on Turano’s Instagram and website, where Dave showcases the creativity that keeps customers coming back for more.
In addition to their standout menu, Turano’s offers full dinner family specials that serve 4-6 people (though many say they serve up to 8). For just $74.99, customers receive a Grandma’s square pizza, a choice of pasta, chicken, salad, a two-liter soda, and six cannolis. This deal became a hit during the pandemic and remains one of their best-selling options today.
Turano’s also does a significant amount of catering, from small events to large-scale festivals. “We handle everything,” Dave explains, “from the food to the entertainment and even the venue if needed.” Another exciting aspect is their mobile pizza kitchen, which takes the restaurant’s offerings on the road. Available for festivals and residential parties, the mobile kitchen serves up pizzas, cheesesteaks, sausage and peppers, fried Oreos, and more. It’s perfect for anyone looking to bring a taste of Turano’s to their own event.
Since opening, Turano’s, which enjoys giving back to the community, has changed the pizza game in Livingston, offering high-quality meals that go beyond traditional offerings. For updates on specials and new menu items, follow @TuranoPizzaKitchen on Instagram or visit their website.
