Ariella Cianni Ariella Cianni, one of the talented stylists at Shag86 of Little Falls, recalls that even from the very first day of work in May of 2004 as an assistant at the salon, the first at which she had ever worked, she was eager to be “the best at everything.” Today, she has clearly achieved that goal, honing her skills over the years side by side with the best stylists in the field in cutting, color, styling and more. During her career, she has trained with professionals at industry leaders such as L’Oreal, Wella, Wedkin and many others. “I still continue my education to this day,” she says, “and look forward to learning new things every time I go for training.” Once, when asked what she would be if she had the opportunity to change her career, she quickly responded, “I would never take that opportunity, because I love what I do so much, it would sadden me if I didn’t have this work in my life anymore.” Summing up, she says, “It’s the best feeling, knowing that my talent can change the way clients feel about themselves and having them feel their very best when they leave my chair.”

RESTAURANT NEWS From a small, casual ramen joint to a swanky, multi-level steak house, North Jersey foodies have an abundance of new ways to tickle their taste buds.

Rails Steakhouse The Mosaic Room, Rails Steakhouse

Roosterspin The atmosphere is industrial chic with brick walls, pipes and seat backs fashioned from the grilles of old jeeps. As a DJ spins jazz records from the restaurant’s vintage collection, your head will be spinning to see what the other tables have ordered. It’s okay, fellow diners are convivial and happy to share recommendations. Nearly every one (and you should too) orders the signature dish, double fried Korean chicken. Order it “half and half” to get a taste of both the hot sauce, punctuated with Korean peppers, and the milder, slightly sweet, soy garlic sauce. Westfield, roosterspin.com

BURG

From its impressive architecture to its culinary offerings and dramatic interiors, Rails is more than just a steakhouse. Aside from an elegant dining room, the 3-story, timber framed structure presents live entertainment in the Rafters Lounge and serves prohibition-style cocktails in an underground speakeasy, accessible via a sliding bookcase. There are several options for private dining, including the Mosaic Room, so named for the intricate mosaic floor fashioned from cross-sections of trees felled by Superstorm Sandy. The menu is seasonal American with an emphasis on dry aged beef, raw-bar plateaus and authentic, Neapolitan pizza from a wood-burning oven. Towaco, railssteakhouse.com

Ani Ramen House Slurping is encouraged! The atmosphere is laidback and the specialty of the house is, no surprise, ramen! Other musthaves: soft, spongy pork buns and crispy gyoza. Be prepared to wait for a table! Montclair Aniramen.com

Military Park has just undergone a major renovation including a soon-to-open burger and craft beer restaurant. Burg, a new venture from the owners of Maritime Parc, will offer a casual menu comprised from locally sourced ingredients. The signature drink, the Ice Burg, a frozen Old-Fashioned, is destined to become a favorite on hot summer days. Newark, facebook.com/burgnj

17 Summer Cuccia siblings, Jenna and Joseph, are still under thirty, but their culinary experience is impressive. Three years ago, they started a successful catering business and recently appeared on the TV show, Restaurant Startup. Though negotiations to open a large restaurant in pricey Hoboken failed, the determined Cuccias opened a small, neighborhood bistro on their own. Jenna runs the dining room with grace and enthusiasm while Joseph can be seen in the open kitchen preparing elevated, classic dishes like crispy roasted chicken and homemade oxtail agnolotti. BYOB, Lodi, 17summerrestaurant.com

Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen Next door to the Mayo Performing Arts Center, powerhouse chef, Chris Cannon, has transformed the grand spaces of the historic Vail Mansion into Jockey Hollow Bar and Kitchen. The multi-concept venue is perfect pre- or post- theater for everything from drinks to a light bite in the 1920’s style Vail Bar, a casual lunch or dinner in the Oyster Bar, and fine dining in the Dining Room. MARY E. SINGLETARY Every Woman & Child’s Champion!

By Louise B. Hafesh

he is the quintessential woman of the world: dynamic, successful, a motivational force and influential leader throughout her distinguished working career. Her passionate advocacy for social, political and economic progress, has earned her a place of honor as a New Jersey woman in the news, in the know and in the forefront of the advancement of women and children’s issues, locally, national and internationally. And that’s just for starters. The former director of the NJ Division on Women, and UN representative for the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women, Mary E. Singletary, today sits at the helm of the oldest volunteer non-sectarian women’s organization in the United States, the National Council of Women (NCWUS.

“I am living out my mother’s dream,” declares the Montclair resident in a moment of reflection. “She never had the opportunity to complete her education or to travel, and when I think of the jobs I’ve had, the countries I’ve visited, the people I’ve been privileged to meet, I think these are unique experiences for an African-American woman whose high school principal refused to allow her to take college prep classes because ‘I was not capable and would be wasting teachers’ time.’ Thinking back, my life has certainly taken an interesting turn.” And turn it has. Singletary’s volunteer service and community involvements are diverse. A registered nurse who holds a B.A. degree in Health Education, a career path again inspired by her earliest role model. “My mother encouraged me to be courageous and confident in my abilities. She was adamant that I gain an education and become an independent woman, capable of paying my own way, because as she said, ‘I don’t want your knees to look like mine.’ Her knees were blackened from kneeling to scrub floors. It took me 10 years to get that degree, but the persistence my mother instilled in me kept me going.” (continued on page 10)

Providing Patients with

COMPLETE DENTAL CARE By Susan Wilinski, photo by Dan Epstein

A

fter being diagnosed with an ailment like periodontal disease, a patient often will be referred by their dentist to a specialist in a different location who may or may not have the same values and level of service. With the addition of periodontist Dr. Samantha Aaron in 2011 to The Silverstrom Group, a dental practice in Livingston, patients can receive care for their teeth, bones and gums in one location. “It is a huge benefit for a periodontist and a dentist to work under one roof,” Dr. Aaron states. “We can coordinate treatment so patients can get all of their work done in one visit. Without leaving the building, a patient can get a procedure done and have all the aesthetic work completed at the same time. It enables us to consult with a patient together, through all phases of treatment, to make sure the end result meets everyone’s expectations. Communication is at its best, making planning as well as treatment seamless.” Having graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completing her residency at New York University, Dr. Aaron worked at private practices in both New Jersey and New York City before joining The Silverstrom Group, which is comprised of Dr. David Silverstrom, Dr. Gary Silverstrom, oral surgeon Dr. David Koslovsky, endodontist Dr. Blumberger, and Dr. Aaron. In addition to the benefit of having these specialties in one place, Dr. Aaron feels that the success of working together is largely attributed to the doctors sharing similar ideals, goals and philosophies. “It was very apparent to me from our first meeting that our philosophies of treating patients and our approaches to dentistry are very similar,” she says. “I very much admired how focused they are to comprehensive care and making sure every patient is treated as you would treat your family. I was attracted to how the group stays up-to-date in terms of technology, how active they are in attending lectures and conferences to stay on top of the latest procedures and advances in the field and how well the office is run.”

Dr. David Silverstrom, Dr. Samantha Aaron and Dr. Gary Silverstrom

At The Silverstrom Group, all of the doctors are focused on their patients’ optimum oral health which means providing expert care in all areas and making it as convenient as possible for those patients to be evaluated in one appointment. Having Dr. Aaron as an integral part of that team, who is available during their exams, gives patients the benefit of an expert in the supporting structures of the teeth. “A periodontist specializes and has advanced training in the treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth,” Dr. Aaron explains. “We work hand in hand with the dentists to build a strong ‘foundation’ so that they can build a beautiful ‘house.’” “I hope that more patients are able to take advantage of the wonderful arrangement and the skills we can offer to make their treatment as comfortable, easy and seamless as possible.”

Betty Murphy Creating Opportunities in Business & Community By Susan Wilinski, photos by Dan Epstein

B

etty Murphy walked into the Willowbrook Mall back in 1973 and took her first steps on a career path she never imagined “I was approached by one of those meandering market researchers who started asking me questions about a product.” Something about product development captured her imagination and interest. Murphy went on to become a partner in a product development company that holds more than 50 patents and has helped create such name brands as Wet Ones®, Stick Ups® and Carpet Fresh®. consumer research. Having stayed at home with a 2 year old, she couldn’t wait to get back in the game. They generated so many new product ideas for Airwick that they decided to open their own new products company. Creative Products Resource (CPR) began on October 1, 1979 in Ft. Lee, NJ. Their mission was to create, formulate and patent new products that had a meaningful difference and license them to marketing companies. Within 10 years CRP had grown to 18 employees and worked with Montclair State University’s cooperative education program to mentor chemistry majors.

At home with husband Greg Murphy

Born and raised in northern Virginia, Murphy came from a creative household and grew up singing and dancing. Her father was an entrepreneur and her mother, Flory Jagoda, at 91 is a Sephardic folk singer who still performs, often with her daughter Betty. Murphy majored in dance at Adelphi University. With such strong business and artistic influences in her life, becoming an entrepreneur in a field that requires innovative abilities was a natural fit for Murphy. “It’s exciting to go to work every day,” Murphy explains. “I get to work with very creative people.” It was after graduating from college that Murphy met her husband, Greg, while vacationing with her roommates in Falmouth, Massachusetts. “I had curly hair, was sunburned from head to toe and wearing a muumuu,” she recalls. “I thought he would be attracted to my roommates.” After marrying in 1972, they moved to New Jersey. Murphy met her business partner, Jim Smith, at Lehn & Fink in 1973 where he was New Products Manager and she was a market researcher interviewing doctors about hypodermic needles. They immediately developed concepts for Mop ‘n Glo and Wet One’s product line extensions. Smith became VP of Research & Development at Airwick in 1976 and called Murphy to consult on new product concept development and run 20

In 1999, after launching and marketing Custom Cleaner, the first Home Dry Cleaning™ kit for a tumble dryer, they sold CPR to a joint venture of The Dial Company and Henkel. They started their current company ReGenesis and after a two-year exclusive contract with Dial/Henkel, they began developing drug delivery systems and personal care products.

“It’s exciting to go to work every day, I get to work with very creative people.”

—Betty Murphy

Betty and her husband Greg currently reside in Cedar Grove. Her husband, a certified financial planner, is a Montclair native whose greatgrandfather was the first paid police officer in town. Their son, Josh, now lives in Atlanta with his wife and children and owns his own creative agency, carrying on the legacy of entrepreneurship and creativity. Outside of work, Murphy has immersed herself in volunteering in the community and for non-profit organizations. “The community is very important to me,” explains Murphy. During her years at CPR, Murphy was involved with Dress for Success, a non-profit that provides clothing and career tools to low-income women, and CPR was able to provide $70,000 of their Home Dry Cleaning Kits to the organization. “Seeing someone who just got

a job after putting on a donated suit was wonderful,” she says. During the years she has been a dedicated and active supporter of many community and non-profit organizations. She served as co-president at Bnai Keshet Reconstructionist Synagogue and during her term she assisted in leading a campaign that was able to raise $1.2 million to pay off the synagogue’s mortgage. Murphy was named the North Essex Chamber’s 2009 Community Leader of the Year, received the Working Woman’s Entrepreneurial Excellence Award and is a past president of Programs for Parents, a not-for-profit with a mission to ensure that children get the best possible start in life. She has also served on various event-planning committees at the Montclair Art Museum. Murphy believes that over the next couple of years, she and Smith will be preparing for the end of their time at ReGenesis. For her, this will leave more time to devote to her latest endeavor, her involvement as co-chair of the New York advisory board of Little Kids Rock, a non-profit that provides music education and new instruments to under-served public school

students at no cost to them. “The opportunity to play rock ‘n roll on their own instruments changes the way that children think about school,” Murphy asserts. While she has never lost her creative side, Murphy will be prepared for whatever comes next as she keeps her timing perfect at a barre class every morning. “I am a dancer, after all,” she expressed.

Spring is in the Air— Time to Spring Clean your House

By Ruth A. Bollo, Clean It Right Photo by Dan Epstein

O

ut with dust, dirt and cobwebs—in with the sun, fresh air and the sound of chirping birds. Here is a spring cleaning checklist to get your home clean, revitalized and energized.

1. Dust down all your ceilings, walls and woodwork to get rid of the cobwebs that have gathered over the winter months. Start from the ceilings and dust your way down to the woodwork. Be sure you also dust your ceiling fans and any artwork or decorations that are hanging on your walls. 2. Vacuum all the edges of your carpet where dust usually gathers. Dust also loves to cling to upholstery and drapes, so vacuum them, too. Wash your light sheer curtain panels and rehang them wet to avoid wrinkles and shrinkage from the dryer. 3. There is nothing that brightens a home more than sparkling clean windows. Don’t forget to vacuum the dirt off the window screens and wipe the sills clean. Put your hand in an old sock and wipe down your blinds. 4. Clean all your framed pictures and home accessories. Wood furniture can dry out from indoor heating, so give it a good polishing. Use a polish with lemon or orange oil to restore moisture and shine. Don’t forget to polish your kitchen cabinets, too. 5. Look around your home with fresh eyes and a mind to de-clutter. Get rid of old magazines, papers and piles of mail that might be lying around. 6. Clean the ashes out of your wood-burning fireplace and get rid of any old wood. 7. Wash your shower curtain and put up a fresh liner. Wash bathroom throw rugs and bath mats, too. Check shower and tub areas for mold that may have formed and treat it appropriately. 8. Strip your bed and vacuum and dust behind and underneath it. Wash your mattress pads and pillow covers. Freshen your mattress by sifting baking soda over it. Let it sit for an hour then vacuum with the upholstery attachment. If you have a pullout couch vacuum that mattress too. 9. You’ll be surprised at what’s collecting behind your refrigerator. If you can, slide the refrigerator away from wall and vacuum behind and underneath it. 10.Vacuum or wash your pet’s beds and blankets too. Now open your windows wide and breath the fresh spring air into your home. Ruth Bollo 26

h, spring! Goodbye to down coats, hello to…frizzy hair? As wonderful as the new season is, especially after this past winter, the rising mercury presents its own challenges to hair care. Ariella Cianni, a Master Stylist at Shag86 in Little Falls, answers questions about optimal hair care during the heat and humidity of the next few months. Should women change their hair-care routines now that the weather is getting warmer?

Absolutely. The humidity that goes along with the warmer weather is what causes thick, curly hair to frizz up and fine hair to go limp. Women with thick, dry hair need a shampoo with a heavier, humidity-resistant coating. We recommend Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger products for this type of hair. On the other hand, women with fine hair should hold off on moisturizing and go for volumizing products, like Arrojo Daily Shampoo and Conditioner, during the warmer months.

Are there any styling tools to use or avoid during the summer? A flat-iron is just too hot to deal with in July. There are a number of really good frizz- and curl-control gels and creams available. Two great products I can recommend are Curl Definer and Curl Control, both from the Arrojo line. And don’t forget about headbands and hair bands as a

simple way of taming curly hair. I tell women with curly hair to embrace their curls.

Can women go swimming without damaging their hair? Ideally, I’d rather you not go in the pool at all if you have color treated hair. If you are blonde; the chlorine tends to turn blonde hair green. If you do, wear a swim cap. Everyone else should at least coat their hair with conditioner before going in the pool and wash it out afterwards. No matter what color your hair is, chlorine is still a bleach, which is not good for hair or skin. Swimming in the ocean is better from a hair-care perspective. Women should still apply conditioner beforehand, but they don’t need to apply it as thickly.

Are you seeing any hairstyling trends? Yes, two. First, everyone is cutting their hair for spring. The new look is the “shoulder-grazer.” It’s not too short and it has more texture and interest than the really long hair we have been seeing for years. The other major trend is spray-painting color on hair. Hair stylists use an airbrush machine, which is the same tool that makeup artists use. Clients love the pop of color; bands of neon are very popular. It looks complicated, but it’s actually easier to do than traditional highlighting. Lastly, of course, women who have traditional highlights, hair painting, or single-process color, generally go lighter in the summer.

How do you create a calming environment for an anxious and fearful patient?

For which procedures can a patient wear the glasses?

Helping an anxious patient overcome his or her fear of the dentist is one of the most rewarding aspects of our job. It is incredibly important to us that our office feels like a home away from home. One of the latest technologies we recently adopted into our practice is called the Cinema ProMed, which allows patients to have a relaxing and entertaining experience during their appointment.

All of them! The main reason they are available is to enhance patient comfort during any procedure. We chose to stream Netflix through the movie glasses so patients have endless options to choose from and there is something for everyone. We recommend either a TV show for a simple cleaning appointment or a full length movie for a more involved procedure.

What is the Cinema ProMed System? They are multimedia video glasses that allow patients to feel like they are in a movie theater. The glasses are lightweight and flexible to fit all patients and are connected to comfortable over the ear headphones. Patients who wear eyeglasses can configure the multimedia video glasses to different prescriptions ranging from 5 to +2 diopters, so they do not need to wear their glasses while using the system.

When did you introduce them into your practice? We started offering the movie glasses at the beginning of this year and patients absolutely love them!

What made you decide to make them available to patients? One of the biggest triggers of anxiety in patients is hearing the sound of the drill. With the Cinema ProMed system patients can immerse themselves in a movie and drown out what is going on around them. The movie makes the time go by so much faster for the patient. We recently had a young patient come in to our office for an emergency, so we gave him the Cinema ProMed. He was laughing hysterically during his appointment! It is a great feeling to see a patient having a positive and fun experience at the dentist.

About what percentage of your patients decide to wear the glasses? The majority of our patients choose to use the movie glasses, particularly for longer appointments. We have found that patients enjoy being able to focus on a movie and it makes the appointment go by much faster. We have even had patients request to stay after their appointment just so they can finish what they were watching!

Is there an extra cost to the patient to use the glasses? We have incorporated the glasses into our standard routine and they are free for all patients.

How does nitrous oxide compliment the cinema glass system? The nitrous oxide system and multimedia video glass system fit nicely together. The nose piece on the glasses is easily removable and the frame fits with the nitrous oxide nasal hood. Most patients, particularly the fearful ones, love being able to use both at the same time.

“The finer details of preparing for surgery pay a key role in ensuring a smooth road to recovery.” Dr. Valerie J. Ablaza of The Plastic Surgery Group in Montclair, discusses some of those topics.

What are types of medications should be avoided before cosmetic surgery? As with all surgical procedures, you should inform your doctor of all prescription and over-the-count medications you are taking. I will advise you to avoid alcohol and to stop taking aspirin containing products, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory products and vitamin E, as these can disrupt the clotting processes and lead to excessive bleeding. You will also be advised to continue taking medications to treat high blood pressure or thyroid conditions up to the time of surgery. You may also be prescribed antibiotics prior to surgery if there is a history of mitral valve prolapse or if you have had previous joint replacement surgery.

Is it necessary to have blood work or other tests? The type of blood work and tests are based on age, general health, and the type of anesthesia that will be used. The most common blood tests performed include a blood count, electrolyte levels or a profile of the blood elements that regulate bleeding. An electrocardiogram is performed for age 40 and older and for childbearing age women, a urine pregnancy test is performed. In people over 60 or those who have a history of cigarette smoking, a chest x-ray will also be required.

Should vitamin supplements be taken before surgery? There are certain vitamins and nutritional supplements that can boost the immune system before

and after surgery. These supplements can prevent infection, minimize inflammation, reduce bruising and enhance wound healing. Supplements are highly recommend and are the options are discussed during a pre-surgical visit.

Does a patient need to stop smoking before a procedure? People who are actively or had a strong history of smoking, as well as being exposed to long-term second-hand smoke all have a higher change of problems after surgery. We, therefore, advise that cigarette smoking be stopped at least two to three weeks prior to surgery. This pertains to all forms of nicotine, including substitutes and smoker’s aids as they can increase the risk of poor healing, skin loss, scabbing and crusting. Note that “no smoking” includes patches, gum, tablets, chewing tobacco, cigars, pipes, and exposure to second-hand smoke as these all infiltrate into the bloodstream.

Karolina Dehnhard

Helping Women Protect Their Ass (ets)

F

or Karolina Dehnhard, empowering women, helping them to protect their assets and become the best they can be isn’t just an important part of her career as a family law attorney, it’s her life’s calling. Born in Poland, by age six, Dehnhard and her mother immigrated to the United States with one suitcase, two hundred dollars and the promise of living the American Dream. Settling down amidst fellow immigrants in a Brooklyn neighborhood, mom and daughter faced turmoil and uncertainty during those early years, but as Dehnhard recalls: “My mother encouraged me to do anything I set my mind to and taught me the importance of surrounding myself with people who aspire to do great things.” Guided by that mantra, Dehnhard excelled academically, earning both an undergraduate and graduate degree in psychology from the College of St. Elizabeth in Madison, New Jersey, and turned her desire to help others into a career as the Assistant Executive Director of a New Jerseybased non-profit advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities and aging-out, at-risk youth. Along the way, marriage and sadly divorce ensued, with the latter being an impetus for her work empowering other women who, like herself, were facing the mental, emotional and financial challenges that often accompany dissolution of matrimony. Continuing that journey, Dehnhard made the bold move to enroll in the prestigious New York Law School, subsequently graduating 3rd in her class and passing the New Jersey bar.

Advocating for the empowerment of women…. The fledgling attorney surrounded herself with other strong, like-minded women, most notably, her then mentor, Morris County Presiding Judge the Honorable Rosemary Ramsay and joined the family law department of Budd Larner, P.C. in Short Hills, where she focused on connecting divorcing women to vetted professionals, including a broad range of financial planners, realtors, career coaches, and other experts. “It is common for women in the throes of divorce to become overwhelmed with the process, as they juggle all areas of their lives in an attempt to pick up the pieces and start anew,” says Dehnhard. “These women are vulnerable. They need a means to build confidence; to get back on their feet and rebuild a new life filled with endless Women’s Empowerment Organization: www.believeinspiregrow.com

possibilities,” she points out enthusiastically. “As both an immigrant who arrived in this country without speaking the language and a divorcee, I know first-hand how essential it is to have a team of supporters behind you who are dedicated to helping you build happy new chapters in your life.” To that end, Dehnhard is passionate about her program for women that she dubs, ‘Better than Ever, ‘ which she says “speaks so true to my heart.” In addition, as a member of the women’s empowerment organization B.I.G. (Believe, Inspire, Grow), she has been engaged as a valued sponsor, and beginning in June, a co-leader of B.I.G.’s vibrant Short Hills-Millburn pod. A popular and engaging speaker for B.I.G. who presents regularly on the topic, “A Smart Woman Knows How to Protect her Ass (ets),” Dehnhard educates hundreds of New Jersey women about their financial rights and the impact their money decisions can have on their businesses and lives. Most recently she joined a US delegation to Ireland to develop international business relations amongst women in business and has been nominated as a 2015 Leading Woman Entrepreneur and Business Owner by Leading Women Entrepreneurs of NJ. Today, as she approaches a new and exciting decade in her life, the powerful words of her mother still linger as a guiding light. “She realized early in life that a woman’s journey is never a straight one and recognized that whenever a woman’s goals get temporarily derailed or back burnered, as long as she has a vibrant and loyal support system who have her best interest in mind, she can lead a more fulfilling life than ever imagined.” Dehnhard is bringing that same positive mindset to her law career, the women she serves in B.I.G., her students at New York Law School and the people she meets in all areas of her life.

How Women Can Earn a

COLLEGE DEGREE

…Without giving up their family, job, or going broke By Kimberly Blaker

S

o you’d like to further your education, but with a job and a family, you don’t know where you’d find time for the commute and classes let alone to study? Even if you could, there are the everincreasing costs for classes and books to squeeze into your budget. Fortunately today there are many ways to overcome these obstacles.

To get started, read What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Nelson Bolles or Who Do You Think You Are? by Keith Harary and Eileen Donahue or check with a local institution for the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator test to discover your interests and strengths. Next, list your educational goals and discuss the importance of them with your partner to gain his support. Finally, research institutions to learn which offer the courses, degree, and options for earning credit that suit your needs. Most can be found on the web, or in a resource center at a college nearby.

Correspondence & Online Courses Independent study programs offer a couple options. Online courses can be taken in the convenience of your home. These usually require attendance (at your computer) at specific times. Correspondence courses are a good option for many because there are no schedules and usually allow six to eighteen months for completion with extensions up to one year. Evening and weekend courses as well as accelerated programs also offer some flexibility.

How to Pay for Tuition & Books There are many options for financing your education. The Federal Pell Grant is awarded based on financial need. The maximum award amount for the 2015-2016 school year will be $5,775. Another grant based on financial need is The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). The Federal Work Study program is awarded based on financial need giving students the opportunity to work on campus to help cover education costs. The Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan, and Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan are all available with different eligibility requirements, interest rates, and payment terms. If you are a single mother, you may qualify for grants and scholarships available to single parents. Ask your academic institution what it offers. A wide variety of scholarships is available. Check with your institution as well as a scholarship guide or online scholarship search. Ask your employer if it offers reimbursement for college courses. If the classes pertain to your job, your employer may cover the costs. Finally, don’t forget the HOPE Scholarship, a tax credit available for eligible taxpayers, totaling $1,500, and the Lifetime Learning tax credit. Certain requirements and restrictions apply.

Coordinating Multiple Responsibilities Like most women, you probably wear many hats. But with a little planning and finesse you can develop workable solutions to allow time for your studies. • Make a list of ALL your responsibilities then cross off anything unnecessary. Where can you save time? Do housecleaning every ten to fourteen days rather than weekly. Skip cleaning anything that isn’t in dire need until the next time. Straighten up main rooms only on a daily basis. Others can wait. • Make a pact to limit volunteering your time until you’ve reached your educational goals. If ‘no’ isn’t in your vocabulary, create reminder cards to keep by the phone and in your purse so you’ll be prepared to say ‘no’ at all times. • Assign your children some additional chores. • Discuss the importance of furthering your education with your partner. Ask which responsibilities he would be willing to take over until you’ve accomplished your goals. • Trade babysitting with a friend, neighbor, or relative to for some quiet study time. • Set a schedule with your partner for watching the kids so you can study at the library. • Ask your employer if you can take shorter lunch breaks and leave earlier or to allow you fewer but longer workdays for an extra day of study each week.

Have You Heard….

Functional and Fashionable for the Beach and Pool

A Mobile App for Sun Protection

Simple Sarongs is the perfect marriage of a beautiful and absorbent beach towel with a one-size-fits-all cover-up. They are a little thinner to not add bulk and to dry more quickly, but yet luxuriously soft and durable. And with clever placement of cute buttons and buttonholes, they easily button into a stayput beach must-have. They have the versatility of a traditional sarong, and can be worn around the hips, waist or chest. www.SimpleSarongs.com

A smartphone mobile app that can provide personalized, real-time sun protection advice improved some sun protection behavior, according to an article published by JAMA Dermatology. The study showed that users of the app, called Solar Cell, were more likely to use widebrimmed hats, sunscreen and protect skin by moving to shaded areas.

The Health Benefits of Fermented Foods Fermented, or cultured foods are critical for gut health because of their high probiotic content. By introducing beneficial bacteria into your digestive system, probiotics have been shown to help slow or reverse some diseases, improve bowel health, aid digestion, and improve immunity. Think sauerkraut, sourdough bread, yogurt, sour cream and, of course, pickles. To be sure you are getting the beneficial probiotics, fermented dairy products should be labeled live active cultures and all other products should read unpasteurized or raw on the labels.
