17th Annual Coat Drive

or the past 17 years, Jersey Cares, an Essex Countybased charitable and volunteer organization, has hosted a coat drive. Pairing with companies, public servants, churches, schools and other organizations across the state to collect coats and jackets for those in need. The coat drive officially kicked off November 15, and will continue through December 15. This year, in light of the hurricane, more men, women, children and babies are in need of warm coats and jackets this season. Designated drop-off locations have been established across our area. At the end of the drive, coats will be sorted and distributed to local service agencies for distribution. Supplies for Disabled Sandy Victims

n Thursday, November 15, the Kessler Foundation hosted a benefit for the many Hurricane Sandy victims in our area. The event, Rebuilding Lives After Hurricane Sandy: A Benefit for People with Disabilities was held at The Grove in Cedar Grove and directly benefitted those with disabilities in our area. The evening featured comedian Jeff Norris, 80s cover bands The Emulators and The Platinum Band, raffles, prizes, boardwalk games, caricature artists and a Jersey Shore-themed menu. Ben Vereen, a former Kessler patient, emceed the event. The event helped those in need who were affected by the storm replace wheelchairs, vehicles, ramps, housing and facilities. Approximately 200 attended the event, which raised over $28,000. Additionally, Norris will be donating all proceeds from his upcoming performances for the next year to this relief effort. Bill “The Train Guy” Cinque comes back to the Roseland Free Public Library to set up his 10th annual working holiday train exhibit. ew Year’s Eve is right around the corner and you know what that means—time to make those annual resolutions to be a better you. Perhaps you want to quit smoking, lose weight or curb a coffee addiction. For many of us, however, what typically begins in earnest in January often falls by the wayside just a few months later.

Kicking bad habits is tough, to be sure. and while going “cold turkey” may work for some, for the majority of people abruptly ending a long-held practice usually proves ineffective. In fact, it can even be unhealthy and lead to new bad behaviors. The best way to change patterns for the long term is to follow a gradual, orderly process. Here we provide the steps to get you on your way.

IdentIfy trIggers

Do you know what caused you to start your habits? Figuring out what’s behind your behavior and how it makes you feel is the key to stopping it. Maybe it was a particular life event, a reaction to someone else’s words, or an everyday occurrence that affects you on a deeper level. Whatever the trigger, acknowledge it, understand it and avoid it if necessary (and possible!).

after you’ve identified the causes for your habits and committed yourself to changing your behaviors, it’s important to define your goals and establish a realistic timeline for achieving them. adapt attitudes and activities so they are more aligned with your objectives, and document your progress on a daily basis. experts say that it can take between two and three months before a new behavior becomes a habit. If you relapse, which may very well occur, don’t give up. use the experience to further tailor your new lifestyle and plan ahead.

Will power can only take you so far, so choose positive alternative behaviors to replace of the old ones. If you’re trying to quit smoking and yearn for a cigarette, for example, reach for sugarfree gum or crunchy vegetables instead. If you’re looking to stop biting your nails and start to feel anxious, take deep breaths and meditate for a few minutes. he best medical care for children involves much more than just treating illness or injury. It also attends to a child’s fears, includes the family in decision-making, and is delivered by experienced and compassionate providers. Such is the case at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson, where for the past 30 years children from birth through age 21 have benefited from a team approach to comprehensive care that “treats the whole child.” “We know how difficult going to the doctor can be for children, so we make them feel safe and help them understand and cope with injury or illness,” says Michael Lamacchia, MD, Chair of Pediatrics at St. Joseph’s. “We have not only excellent medical and nursing care, but also family-centered care, which allows patients and families to collaborate with providers on treatment plans. And we offer a Child Life Program that uses music, art, horticultural and other therapies to relieve stress and brighten their stay.” A specialized acute-care, state-designated children’s hospital, it is located within St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center and is a member of St. Joseph’s Healthcare System and sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth. The Children’s Hospital has been recognized among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for patient safety excellence by HealthGrades, and considered an innovator in chil-

dren’s health by virtue of its cutting-edge technologies, treatment of the most complex cases, and leadership in new medical modalities. St. Joseph’s was the first in the nation to have high-definition telemedicine to enable physicians to discuss cases with experts at other facilities such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It was also the first in New Jersey to offer a Feeding and Swallowing Program for children, particularly those with autism, and presently is one of only four health care institutions in the country to do so. “Our multidisciplinary program has an 88% success rate, as high as Johns Hopkins, and our patients come from far and wide. We’ve seen children from 40 other states and six other countries,” notes Dr. Lamacchia. The hospital also offers extensive pediatric subspecialties, including orthopedics, neurosurgery and craniofacial surgery, to care for complicated cases that require several procedures. Its Regional Craniofacial Center has been so effective in treating disorders and anomalies of the skull, face and jaw that five years ago St. Joseph’s established the Alfiero and Lucia Palestroni Birth Defects Center, which provides consultation and care for children with structural birth defects. The Palestroni Center is one of only three facilities across the country to perform minimally invasive surgery, called Craniosynotosis, that interrupts suture fusion in infants’ skulls to permit them to expand normally. St. Joseph’s itself is expanding, having opened three community-based subspecialty practices in the past year in Hoboken, Wayne and Paramus. cup of this traditional wintertime beverage can have nearly 350 calories. But, by making a few adjustments, this season you can concoct an equally delicious eggnog with half the calories. This recipe on Oprah. com, created by Dr. David L. Katz, serves six and contains around 100 calories per serving. Ingredients: 6 cups skim milk 1 cup egg substitute ½ cup nonfat powdered milk 6 Tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 tsp. rum extract Ground nutmeg or cinnamon Sugar-free whipped topping Directions: In a medium pot, over medium heat, whisk skim milk, egg substitute, powdered milk and sugar together. Cook, while stirring, for 15 to 20 minutes, until thickened. Remove pot from heat and whisk in vanilla and rum extracts. Let mixture cool, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 30 minutes. Then, refrigerate until chilled (two to three hours). Stir well and pour into cups. Sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon and add a spoonful of whipped topping.

ccording to a study conducted by Anita Kelly, professor of psychology at the University of Notre Dame, telling fewer lies may improve overall mental and physical health. 110 adults participated in the 10-week study, half of whom were asked to stop telling major and minor lies, while the other half only had to report the number of lies they told per week. All of the participants took a weekly lie detector test and completed health and relationship questionnaires. The study found a stronger correlation between less lying and improved health for participants in the no-lie group. For example, the study found when participants in the no-lies group told three fewer white lies than they did in other weeks, they also experienced, on average, four fewer mentalhealth complaints and three fewer physical complaints. However, when participants in the other group told three fewer white lies, they experienced two fewer mental health complaints and one less physical complaint, on average. Other findings included when participants told fewer lies, they reported improvement in personal relationships and social interactions. 

Chop Wood – It Warms You Twice

uperstorm Sandy has changed the way many of us think about our daily lives and reminds us how important electricity is to us when the power went out. We forgot how dark it can get in our house so early in the day. What do you do from 5pm to 11pm?! We wondered how people survived before homes had electricity. We were lucky to only have our power go out, but that pales in comparison to many who lost their homes and suffered tremendous setbacks in their lives. But the purpose of this column is to always try and look at the good that can come out of the bad, so here’s my family’s good. Since the purpose of this column is to look at the good that can come out of the bad, here’s my family’s good. We were amazed to find board games we never knew we had before. We played without TVs or computer games to interrupt or distract us. We laughed more and spent more quality time with family and friends; I can’t remember the last time I had my son’s attention for so long without outside (electronic) interruptions. Kids from many families went outside and started pick-up games of football, basketball, and other outdoor activities. I remember doing that! We collected wood and built fires to keep warm. My son wanted to put his strength training into action and try chopping some wood. Some people I spoke with chopped their own wood for the first time and really enjoyed it. They say, “Chop wood and it will warm you

twice.” We all could have used that warmth when the power went out. Barry Farber What did we learn from this storm’s effects? To invest in a generator or move to a warmer climate? Maybe. But there are also some real life lessons such as appreciating time with your family, helping out friends, enjoying the simple things in life, and discovering things about your kids that you wouldn’t have known without the quiet time away from monitors and devices. It took a tragedy the scope of Superstorm Sandy to bring families and friends closer together. It is gratifying to have our electricity back but I plan to bring out the board games and shut off the electronics a little more often and spend more time appreciating what we have. One of the most inspiring thoughts ever written was produced some 4500 years ago in Sanskrit; I am sharing it in translation: “Look well to this one day, for it and it alone is life. In the brief course of this one-day lie all the verities and realities of your existence— the pride of growth, the glory of action, the splendor of beauty. Yesterday is only a dream, and tomorrow is but a vision. Yet each day, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and each tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this one day, for it and it alone is life.” 

Samba Brings a Lively Taste of Brazil to Montclair

n the aftermath of an epic storm that left so many in the area without power, our visit to Samba was a welcome respite of warmth and light—and top-quality Brazilian comfort food. As owner Ilson Goncalves, a native of Santa Catarina, a small state in southern Brazil, explained, “These are the dishes the ‘moms’ cook in Brazil.” The restaurant’s rough-hewn wooden tables reflect the rustic look of Samba’s interior, where high rectangular mirrors bracket the ornamental copper and brass cooking utensils hanging on terra cotta stuccoed walls. Samba’s concise menu consists of fewer than two dozen dishes, labeled on the menu as Nos. 1 through 19, as well as a soup and a weekend special. Although each item is described in Portuguese, for reasons of clarity, this review will use the menu number and English description of the dishes. Where better to start our evening than with No. 1, a $5.95 appetizer assortment of croquette-like little pastries—one each of chicken, beef and cheese. I’d have a difficult time picking a favorite of these crispy delights, although I did gravitate toward the chicken, while my guest savored the cheese. The vegetable known as yucca plays a prominent role in Brazilian food, and No. 3 on the menu featured tasty fried squares of yucca with Brazilian pork sausage and caramelized onions, priced at $7.95. Perfect for warming our hearts on a chilly night was the potato and collard greens soup with Brazilian pork sausage, $5.95 with sausage or a $4.95 vegetarian option. One of my favorite dishes of the evening was Item 10, the $17.95 Yucca Purée, a creamy and smooth marriage of tastes consisting of coconut milk, tomatoes and onions, served with whole shrimp and white rice, the latter served in a petite cast iron pot. A popular touch in Brazilian dishes is “farofa,” a topping made from toasted yucca flour and added to dishes for flavor and crunch. In the Brazilian rendering of ribs found in No. 18, Pork Ribs, farofa is added to a side of sautéed plantains. Sautéed collard greens, a pot of white rice and beans round out this $18.95 dish, a hearty offering with a definite kick.

A black bean stew with tender, prime meat on the bone, slow-cooked for 24 hours, this $21.95 classic is served with fresh orange slices, collard greens, farofa and a vinaigrette sauce. Samba’s desserts, all $5.95 are outstanding. Smooth and luscious passion fruit mousse and a five-star Brazilian chocolate mousse were beautifully presented in footed glasses, topped with a cheerful sprig of mint, and the authentic flan bests any I’ve had in Newark’s Ironbound section. Ilson Goncalves fondly recalls growing up in his mother’s restaurant and catering business in Brazil. “Being in daily contact with my customers brings me back to my childhood,” he says. “What else could I ask for?” 
