amp has become a part of the fabric of America — conjuring special memories of hiking, swimming, friendships, and adventure for generations. When children go to camp, they’ll likely come home gushing about the lifelong friends they’ve made, and the exciting adventures they had. What they probably won’t tell you about are the life lessons camp has given them — those skills that, if nurtured at home after camp, translate into a lasting self-confidence, an awareness of the importance of kindness, and a greater comfort in voicing their opinions. For more than 150 years, camp has been changing lives — allowing all children to feel successful, especially those who may struggle with traditional educational settings. Camp is full of fun and excitement, but it is so much more — developing children who are better equipped to lead in the twenty-first century with skills such as independence, empathy, the ability to work as part of a team, and a broader world view.
• Camp is a safe and nurturing environment that enhances social skills. Camp is for
everyone, so children and youth have the opportunity to meet and interact with peers from outside their school environment.

• Camp supplements traditional education. Camps use intentional programming to
create a balance of experiential learning opportunities that are physical, emotional, and social.
• Camp provides experiences that promote self-confidence and future academic growth.
American Camp Association® (ACA) independent research shows that parents and camp staff, as well as the campers themselves, report significant growth in several areas, including leadership, independence, social comfort, and values and decisions.
Summer on the hill The Winston School

• Camp encourages a respect and love of nature. Children are able to learn about the
natural world. Camp also gives them a chance to “unplug.” More and more experts are advocating the value of time spent in nature for children — and camp is a perfect place to do that.
• Camp provides the opportunity to stay physically active. Camp is the ultimate outdoor experience with programs that offer physical activities and sports that enhance health and teach self-confidence.
Camp is a natural extension of the classroom. Research indicates that by participating in strategically planned, structured summer experiences, children reduce summer learning loss. Camp challenges children, keeps them engaged, develops creativity and their talents, and expands their horizons.
About ACA
The American Camp Association® (ACA) is a national organization with more than 10,000 individual members and nearly 3,000 member camps. ACA is committed to collaborating with those who believe in quality camp and outdoor experiences for children, youth, and adults. ACA provides advocacy and evidencebased education and professional development, and is the only national accrediting body for the organized camp experience. ACA accredits approximately 2,400 diverse camps nationally. ACA-Accredited® Camps meet up to 300 health and safety standards. Accreditation provides public evidence of a camp’s commitment to the health, safety, and overall well-being of both campers and staff. For more information, visit www.ACAcamps.org.

You can even switch out the gin for vodka, just like the martini, too.

Tips to Land a College Scholarship
I
f you are college-bound or already enrolled, experts say it’s worth investing the time to investigate scholarship opportunities—even if you think you may not be eligible for most opportunities. According to a recent study, more than a third of college costs in the U.S. were covered by scholarships and grants in the 2015-2016 academic year.
“Scholarship money doesn’t have to be paid back, and it can significantly reduce out-of-pocket college costs for families,” says Martha Holler, senior vice president at Sallie Mae, who also points out that scholarships are not just for star football players and valedictorians.
From scholarships for dart players and vegetarians to filmmakers and those fluent in Klingon, available awards run the gamut and extend well beyond academics or athletics to a wide range of activities, interests, and affiliations. “Have a passion for designing greeting cards? There’s a scholarship for that! Interested in helping people understand the perils of texting when driving? There’s a scholarship for that too,” says Holler. With this in mind, Holler and the experts at Sallie Mae are offering the following scholarship tips.
• Be thorough

• Be careful Never pay for scholarships or for scholarship searches. School counselors and school financial aid offices can recommend reputable options. One such site is Scholarship Search by Sallie Mae, a free scholarship search tool that is home to five million scholarships valued at $24 billion dollars. The tool responds with matches that identify relevant scholarships and their award amounts, application requirements, and deadlines, and it automatically sends updates when it identifies new matches.

For more scholarship tips, visit SallieMae.com/ ScholarshipSearch. College scholarships come in all shapes and sizes and billions of dollars are awarded each year. February Is
HEART Month
T
he goal of heart month is to raise awareness of heart disease, including the symptoms, the toll it takes, and how to prevent it. Heart disease was traditionally thought, even in the medical community, to be an older man’s disease, but that’s no longer the case. It impacts everyone, even young people. This, often silent disease, kills someone every minute of everyday. What can you do to help fight this disease?
Become a First Responder Become trained in CPR and learn how to recognize the signs of someone in cardiac distress. See the new guidelines for CPR and learn how to certify your employees. • Know where the AED is located at your worksite and learn how to use it. • Ask about the proper procedure for calling 911 from your office building.
Know your Risks Know if you are at a higher risk for developing heart disease, and although you cannot change heredity risk factors, change the lifestyle factors you do have control over. You are at a higher risk for heart disease and heart attack if you are/have: • African American, Mexican American, Hawaiian, Native American, or Asian American • Over the age of 65 • Male
• A tobacco user • Diabetic •Physically inactive • High blood cholesterol • High levels of stress
• Post-menopausal female

Achieve Maximum Mobility.
Don’t SIT Your Life Away Research has shown that sitting for long periods of time increases your risk of many health concerns. This include Type 2 diabetes, increased blood pressure, heart disease, and even cancer. Most individuals think that this means just sitting in front of the TV at night, but that is not the case–it is any extended sitting. Therefore, sitting at your desk all day can be very harmful. What’s even more astonishing is the fact that spending a few hours a week at the gym does not seem to significantly reduce the risk of these health concerns. The solution is plain and simple: less sitting and more moving overall. Below you will find some tips on how you can decrease your sitting time. Take the stairs instead of elevators, whenever you can. Minimize inter-office emails. Walk down the hall to deliver a message in person.

Wear a hand-free headset set when using the telephone. This will give you the opportunity to stand up and talk or even walk and talk. Take frequent walking breaks. When suitable, try a walking meeting. Try a stand up desk. Or improvise with a high table or counter. If possible, position your work surface above a treadmill. Incorporate an “instant recess” at your workplace. For example, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day have employees get up and move for five minutes. The impact of movement can be great. You will burn more calories which will lead to weight loss and increased energy. —Health News from HAP

Kiss Dry Lips Goodbye
C
old winter weather often leads to dry, chapped and totally unfishable lips. Prep your pucker using these tips: • Exfoliate your lips using a toothbrush. Make sure to wet your mouth and the bristles first, then gently brush in a circular motion. This should take off the excess skin and leave lips soft and smooth. A warm, wet washcloth can also do the trick. • Avoid licking your lips—this only aggravates the problem. Saliva evaporates quickly; leaving lips drier than before. Instead, keep them moisturized with a good lip balm. • Before bed, apply a layer of petroleum jelly or a hydrating lip balm; this will keep lips moisturized throughout the night.

Traits That Make Great Leaders
W
hen Jay Winik wrote his book, April 1865: The Month That Saved America, he was writing about the last month of the Civil War. He knew he would be retelling certain events that led to the Union victory, that he would have to do a lot of historical research, and that he had a compelling story to tell. What he didn’t realize was that he would also find out a lot about what makes some people good at being leaders. “What I discovered is this most common trait among great leaders: they can repeatedly suffer failure and be undaunted by it. They adhere to their vision, and they just keep plugging away. Men who go on to do great things in history often do them against great odds. You see it in Lincoln, you see it in Grant, you see it in Robert E. Lee. “At the end of the book, I included a panorama of what America would become in the 50 years following the Civil War. Looking at the people who went on to shape the country’s destiny, I was shocked by what I found. In 1865, most of these people were failures. “For instance, Thomas Edison had just been fired from his fifth job and was working in a telegraph office. Henry Ford’s father told him, “You are a tinkerer and you will never amount to anything.” But these men had
the drive to keep going despite repeated failure. The lesson: just when you think things cannot get worse, keep going—and you can make them better.”
people is one who pretends to care.”
Great leaders surround themselves with success. They create a very strong environment where they live and work, and are focused on keeping things around that elevate their success. They also surround themselves with other successful people, share ideas with others in their industry and welcome input from their peers and colleagues. Leaders also have a passion for what they do. Passion means having a deep love, respect, and commitment for what you do personally and professionally. Some people find their passion very early in life; others wander until they discover their life’s work. And leaders are bone honest. They say what they mean and mean what they say. Jimmy Johnson, a former Dallas Cowboys coach, believes that this is the way to motivate people. Each year, during training camp, he encourages nervous, anxious rookies. At the end of the day, he’ll tell each one about the good things they did that day and say, “We think you can play here. We like you.” And he means it. Says Johnson, “Sincerity is the most important part of the positive treatment. The only thing worse than a coach or CEO who doesn’t care about his

Leaders maintain a sense of humor, too. Humor breaks down barriers. I was conducting a seminar recently for a Fortune 500 company, and before the seminars began, the CEO took part in a skit in which he made fun of himself. He took a risk doing this, as it might have made him appear foolish. But, it had the opposite effect. It took him out of the CEO mold and made him human—and as a real, approachable person, it transformed employee feelings toward him. Great leaders don’t necessarily have a great sense of humor—but they know when a little levity can ease a tense situation and make everyone feel a bit more comfortable. They are constantly learning. Leaders are readers. They read about their industry, current events, history, and biographies of men and women who are accomplished. They learn by taking action. Nothing teaches better than experience, and great leaders are constantly open to new experiences and exploring new interests. They learn new skills for business and for pleasure and practice the fundamentals of their business so that once learned, they have a skill for life.
